Results of a preliminary study of the ammoniacal leaching of covellite (CuS) in an aqueous oxidizing system in the presence of a non-miscible organic sulfur solvent are described. Up to 60% of the sulfur can be recovered from the solvent as elemental sulfur 1 while achieving high degrees of solubilization of the mineral. The effects of temperature, particle size, oxygen pressure, ammonia concentration and ammonium ion concentration on the degree of sulfur recovery were investigated. Maximum recoveries were achieved at moderate temperatures and in well-buffered systems, with a large excess ammonia concentration. Oxygen pressure and particle size were found to have little effect on fractional recovery of sulfur. A simple empirical model based on electrochemical theory correlating the effects of some of the parameters cont-rolling the degree of sulfur recovery is presented. The results of this work also confirm that in any proposed reaction mechanism for the oxidative ammoniacal leaching of copper sulfides, the primary oxidation product of the sulfide ion in elemental sulfur.

The Çayirhan coal basin is located 124 km (77 miles) west of Ankara,Turkey. With approximately 520 Mt (570 million st) of lignite reserves, the Neogene Çayirhan basin is one of the important coal districts of the central Anatolia region. The Çoraklar formation consists of crossbedded sandstone, channel fill conglomerates, mudstones, carbonaceous shales and volcanoclastic pebblestones, which are fluvial in origin. The lower and upper lignite seams occur, respectively, in the lower and the uppermost parts of the Çoraklar formation. The lignite deposits are in the Çayirhan and Koyunagili portions of the Beypazari Neogene basin. The Çayirhan coalfield consists of lower and upper lignite seams. The lower lignite seam does not outcrop at the surface. Its lateral discontinuity and relatively low sulfur content, plus sedimentologic and stratigraphic features of the associated sediments, indicate a fluvial origin. Thus, the lateral spreading and geometry of the lower lignite deposits were controlled by the channel, flood plain and well drained marshes of a fluvial system. The mining method employed at Çayirhan is the fullymechanized, retreat, working longwall with caving system. Due to ventilation, haulage and tectonic conditions, panel lengths from 0.6 to 1.7km (0.4 to 1.1 miles) are chosen, and 220-m (720ft) face lengths are used. The annual coal production is 2.2 Mt (2.4 million st).

This paper describes six basic stages between perception and production for a new sand and gravel deposit. Sand and gravel, like many of our natural resources, is taken for granted. It is assumed by John Q. Public that because sand and gravel is ubiquitous that it is available whenever and wherever needed - so long as it does not have to be mined in his neighborhood. This idea illustrates one of the enigmas of the industry, the fact that sand and gravel is abundant; however, its availability is another matter. Another problem is that this resource falls in the category of high volume, low profit materials; therefore, transportation costs are critical. Transportation roughly doubles the cost of these materials. It is not difficult to find sand and gravel, at least in Michigan. The problem is to locate a new source close to a market, near an adequate transport route (usually a highway) and in an area which will allow mining.

Efficient filtration of fine kaolin particles plays a crucial role in processing of raw kaolin to a marketable product. Oftentimes, filtration Is the rate controlling step of the whole process. As a consequence, plant production is dependent, to a great extent, on the rates being achieved In filtration. In order to alleviate the bottleneck in production, Nalco Chemical Company initiated a reagent development program to chemically enhance the performance of the filtration units. Filler aids of different classes were synthesized for evaluation. These include reagents whose primary mode of functionality were: coagulation, flocculation, thickening, and combinations of the preceding. All reagents that were synthesized and tested were listed under the appropriate Food and Drug Administration sections of the Code of Federal Regulations. This paper discusses the development and application of a new reagent that Improves the filter production rate with minimal Impact on filter solids. The results of laboratory filter studies along with plant data are presented and discussed. Plant data indicate that this reagent is capable of increasing production rates by as much as 35% on various clays of coarse particles to the finest fractions, as well as clays that are calcined. The reagent's Impact on solids content, re-slurrying characteristics, Brookfield and Hercules viscosity, and drying is within the standards set by plants who have evaluated and now use this product.

"Separation of different calcium minerals have long been an interesting and challenging problem. In this investigation calcium mineral separation is examined by: microflotation, zeta potential measurement and adsorption, using novel collectors having two functional groups instead of one. In theory, by varying the distance between the functional groups, it could be possible to preferentially target one calcium mineral by matching the spatial distance between the sites on the mineral surface. In this investigation two new surfactants have been tested to estimate their ability to float apatite and/or calcite. Preliminary findings show that an increase in distance between the functional groups favors one mineral over the other, and this might be due to differences in the mineral surface structure. INTRODUCTION Apatite is a strategically important mineral which has both great value for industrial use as a precursor to phosphoric acid; and in the agricultural industry as an important source of phosphorous in fertilizers. This has led both the European Union and the United States to recognize it as an important resource for the future. Currently there is no lack of apatite in the world, but it is important to develop the beneficiation to ensure future supply. A common problem in apatite flotation is the selectivity towards calcite, which it is commonly associated with. Although calcite is an important industrial mineral its abundance makes it not usually worth to extract from apatite ores unless it is easy to separate1,2. Both apatite and calcite are semi soluble minerals with calcium as one of their constituents. The most common way to separate apatite and calcite is to use flotation. A process that involves making the mineral particles to extract from the system hydrophobic by adsorbing a collector on the mineral surface. One way to study collector adsorption on a mineral surface is by zeta potential measurements. The zeta potential is the charge at a slip plane a short distance from the surface. By measuring the zeta potential with and without the presence of collector it is possible to investigate if the collector is present at the surface or not, a change is indicative of collector adsorption. The zeta potential of fluorite, apatite and calcite without collector can be seen in Figure 1. The small difference in zeta potential between apatite and calcite shows the similarity in their surface properties and gives an indication of their separation difficulty. One additional problem with semi soluble minerals is their tendency to slightly dissolve in the pulp and thereby change the ionic composition of the solution. This makes separation and research problematic as the freed ions may readsorb on the mineral surface and interfere with the collector adsorption on the mineral surfaces3–5."

Bond International Gold's Colosseum gold mine was discovered in 1865. No recorded production occurred, however, until the 1930s, with production of about 19 kg (615 oz) of gold. The mine was closed in 1942 as a nonessential industry during World War II. The property was acquired by Dallhold Resources in mid-1986. Construction of a 1.1-million Mt (1.2-million st), carbon-in-pulp (CIP), cyanide mill began in November 1986 and was completed in September 1987. Minable reserves are estimated to be 9.5 Mt (10.5 million st), with an average grade of 2.1 g/t (0.061 oz per st). This article describes the general process flow and plant equipment. And it looks at the maintenance and operational problems encountered in the first six months of operation. Process description Ore is direct hauled from the open-pit mine 1.5 km (1 mile) to the crushing facility. There it is crushed to -152 mm (-6 in.) with a single- stage, 1.5-m x 1.2-m (60-in. x 48-in.), 186.5-kW (250-hp), Fuller-Traylor jaw crusher. The ore is then stockpiled in a 31.7-kt (35,000-st) reclaim ore pile. Lime is added to the crushed product as it is conveyed to a single 6.4-m x 4-m (21-ft x 13-ft), Hardinge semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill, followed by a single 4.3-m x 7.3-m (14-ft x 24-ft) Hardinge overflow ball mill. After grinding, the slurry is thickened and then preaereated for three hours. Following preaereation, the pulp is leached with NaCN at a pH of 11, also for three hours. The slurry then goes through a seven-stage CIP circuit for 21 hours. Then the tailings slurry is preaereated for three hours before cyanide destruction using the Inco process. Loaded carbon is eluted using an Anglo American strip, followed by electrowinning on stainless steel wire. The stainless steel wire is transferred to refinery cells where the gold and silver is plated on stainless steel plates. Following electrore-fining, the gold-silver foil is removed, melted, and poured into dore bars for shipment. The crushing, milling, refining, and maintenance processes require 37 people. Crushing The crushing area required changes and modifications following start-up. Several areas are of specific note. Structural failures Rubber support cushion blocks located under the coarse ore bin failed. These were replaced with heavier, more durable blocks and have since appeared to be satisfactory. A severe structural vibration was encountered in the entire crushing facility. A mechanical engineer, brought in by the contractor, determined the structure needed more support and cross-bracing.

The five tunnel contracts of Milwaukee Northeast Side Relief Sewer System are about 80 percent complete. The tunnels are all excavated for 1.9 meter (6'-0") finish diameter sewers in a variable rock, mixed face, and glacial soil environment. Different contracts were let under two primary types of specifications, performance and prescriptive, which treated aspects of construction, such as primary ground support and groundwater control, differently. Interfacing of design and construction through field personnel allowed the needs of all parties to be met and resulted in savings in time and money to the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD). Interfacing, cooperation and risk sharing allowed resolution of problems such as line and grade variations and potential differing site conditions. It also allowed the parties to pursue constructive changes to construction activities. Thus on one contract prescribed use of compressed air was eliminated, but migration of fines into the tunnels was stopped with filter fabric. Use of an expensive primary support system was dropped, but concern about deterioration of lagging was alleviated by use of special materials.

The practice of Countertrade and all of its variations has increased dramatically during the last five years in great part due to the worsening world economic situation and the Third World's increasing debt problems. Conventional wisdom has held that the goods finding their way into countertrade will tend to be manufactured goods of ever increasing value added. It is my contention that this has not been the case. The continued depression of most metals and minerals prices has conspired to keep a great number of metals and raw materials in the forefront of countertrade negotiations. The concept that if a country needs hard currency it will simply sell metals into world markets for cash has been significantly modified by countertrade which encourages subsidies for raw materials which are in turn funded by higher prices for the manufactured goods which the country must import. Countertrade is a term that is relatively new to most of us who have been involved in the international trade of metals and minerals, but it is one that we will continue to hear more of in the future. Countertrade as it is generally known today had its beginnings after the Second World War in Eastern Europe. As the shattered economies of Europe struggled to right themselves, a "cashless" system of trade developed. This system included such ancient concepts as barter as well as more modern ones like bilateral clearing agreements. For over 30 years countertrade was confined mainly to the COMECON nations and their various trade protocols with Third World nations. If metals and minerals were involved, there was little disruption of world markets by such examples as Cuba shipping ferronickel and sugar cane to the U.S.S.R. for a host of manufactured goods and oil. As the world's economy began to slow in the late 70's and the debt crisis began in earnest in the early 801s, this all began to change. As more and more nations which had previously been almost totally dependent upon their mineral wealth over-extended themselves in an attempt to industralize, they concurrently found their income from minerals falling, due to the decreased demand and subsequently lower prices available in the marketplace. At first these nations attempted to balance their payments by promoting the sales of their high value-added manufactured goods. We have all heard numerous examples of U.S. companies going to sell their high technology products in Rumania or Yugoslavia and being confronted with counterpurchase requirements for machine tools, shoes or drill bits. When faced with these demands, a number of companies chose not to sell into those markets while others merrily signed up the obligations without much intent to carry them out. The Performance Bonds required were generally minimal, especially when considered in light of the high margin inherent in high tech items; and the penalty clauses were equally small or nonexistent. A third group of companies actually tried to buy the machine tools or drill bits either for their own internal use or resale but found that due to poor quality and high prices, they were faced with a difficult if not impossible task. This is not to say that no one was able to fulfill a countertrade requirement, but the success ratio on these transactions was incredibly low. This was one of the major contributing factors to the reputation that countertrade has gained as a discipline ... "that it is mostly talk and very little action." Gelling-grade attapulgite and sepiolite clays are employed as thickening agents for the preparation of ionically contaminated drilling fluids where the use of fresh water clays are unfeasible or impossible. Attapulgite and sepiolite are nonswelling clays that can be dispersed and reflocculated by mechanical and chemical means to increase the viscosity of fresh water, salt containing waters, gypsum contaminated waters and fluids containing cement. Such gelled systems are quite stable in viscosity properties and can be further treated with other necessary additives such as thinners, water loss reducers, weighting agents, surfactants, etc. Many of the oil well drilling fluid practices have influenced such technologies as water well drilling, foundation drilling and waste disposal. The use of salt water gelling clays in these fields will be described and compared to oil well drilling.

Olivine was first described and named by Warner in 1790. It is an olive green to greenish gray colored magnesium-iron silicate containing a mixture, in solid solution, of fosterite (Mg2SiO4) and fayalite (Fe2SiO4). Ratios between fosterite and fayalite in olivine are somewhat variable, but in general olivine contains at least 85% fosterite. Specific gravity is variable also, depending on the ratios of fosterite to fayalite. As a rule it is in the 3.2 - 3.4 range. All commercial olivine is obtained from the rock dunite, the most basic member of the peridotite group. Dunites, in addition to being composed primarily of olivine, generally contain assessory pyroxenes and spinels (chromite and magnetite). Dunites', when altered by hydrothermal solutions or metamorphism, often contain alteration minerals such as talc, serpentine, chlorite, vermiculite and amphiboles. In the 1930's and 40's considerable research was conducted on olivine for use as a refractory, plant food raw material, magnesium source for metal, and a source for magnesium chemicals. This research met with only limited success.

Sphalerite is commonly floated in an alkaline environment and under such conditions the overall activation mechanism is obscured by the hydrolysis of Cu2+ and precipitation of Cu(OH)2. Electrokinetic and kinetic flotation tests show that the activation of sphalerite is a two-stage process; the activation products formed on the surface of sphalerite in near neutral and in alkaline solutions in the first rapid activation stage are "flotation-inactive". These layers, when formed in an alkaline solution, are unstable and are transformed into the "flotation-active" form in the second stage. However, the surface layers formed during activation in alkaline environment by copper in the presence of lead ions are very stable and even after a long conditioning time the flotation rate is not improved. Consequently, while both Cu2+ and Pb2+ activate sphalerite flotation, quite unpredictable effects may result when both are present in the solution.

Because of air pollution control regulations in the early 701s it became necessary to clean effluent gases from the Morenci Reduction Works Smelter. Feasibility studies indicated that this could be accomplished most efficiently by using the smelter gaseous effluent to feed a sulfuric acid plant. Complying with air pollution control regulations thus created the need to dispose of relatively large amounts of concentrated sulfuric acid. Typical Morenci ores contain substantial amounts of oxidized copper minerals which are not recoverable by flotation. In addition, there is low sulfide, high oxide material which can be leached, but is not suitable for flotation concentration. Early in 1971 sufficent data had been accumulated to show that a leaching plant for the Morenci tailings could use a large portion of the sulfuric acid produced by the Smelter. It was determined that for all practical purposes leaching of the available copper was complete in two hours or less. Capital expenditures could not be justified for more than two stages of counter current decantation for recovery of the leached copper, and the plant was designed with these criteria in mind.

Teeter-bed (i.e., hindered-bed) separators are used throughout the mineral processing industry for both classification and density separation. The high capacity and sizing characteristics of these units make them ideal for feed preparation prior to coarse flotation (+0.100 mm) circuits. Teeter-bed separators are typically easy to control with two basic operating parameters, including fluidization water rate and bed level. However, data show that these two parameters greatly interact with one another. Given this finding, a high-level automatic control scheme was developed and implemented on a full-scale separator. In addition, dialogue with plant operators has led to several simple changes to an already established design that improves operational and maintenance characteristics.

Roofbolts with expansion anchors have been used at White Pine for more than twelve years, but always with an understanding that their performance was not entirely satisfactory. Some bolts fell out, some were obviously loose, and, when roof failures did occur, very few bolts actually broke. Obviously, there was an anchorage problem. A program was started in May, 1967, to define the problem and to solve it. This paper describes briefly those parts of the program which led to the development of a roofbolt assembly which performs much better in the medium-hard rocks at White Pine. As a result of the changes, significant improvements were found in the torque:tension, tension loss, and pull tests.

A unique machine has been designed for mining narrow veins. The machine, called the NONN, walks on the walls of the stope and carries a boom-mounted hydraulic impact breaker. The concept of walking on the walls allows an existing muck handling system such as LHDs to operate beneath the NOMN. The NOMM has four sets of legs which can be manipulated independently or concurrently to cause the carrier to walk in any direction and to turn sharp corners. The mining rate using the breasting method is targeted to be 25 t/hr.

Nast Tunnel is the first granitic rock tunnel to be excavated by a machine for the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. The machine has excavated 7500 ft of the tunnel at this writing. There have been a few good performances; 31 ft in 1, 8 hr shift, and 75 ft in a 24 hr period, but generally, progress has been slower than that accomplished in the area with reasonable comparable conditions using conventional excavation techniques. Button cutters, now employed using compression as the means of fracturing the rock, gives an average cutting rate of 3 ft per hr. Disc cutters manufactured by the machine builders were tried briefly but the snap rings holding the discs to the hub failed. However, disc cutting rates of 6 ft per hr were recorded for short periods of time in a competent coarse grained porphyritic granite. The snuck was also considerably larger and more easily handled than that produced by the button cutters. Hughes Tool Co. is working on a disc type cutter and expects to have them on the cutterhead by mid June. LOCATION, DESCRIPTION AND BID OPENING Nast Tunnel is located 2 miles west of the Continental Divide and 39 miles east of the town of Basalt in Pitkin County, Colorado. The outlet portal is in the Fryingpan River Valley at an elevation of 10,000 ft. The tunnel is a 3 mile long, 10 ft diameter gravity flow water conveyance structure and a part of the west slope water collection for the Bureau of Reclamation, Fryingpan-Arkansas Project. Accident prevention can be portrayed as a science that deals with facts and natural phenomena and must be dealt with in the same manner as any other operating problem. Safety at the Copper Queen Branch dates back to 1913 when a Safety Organization was started and rules formulated for underground mining. Since then the mining industry has made substantial progress in the elimination of accidents and when the Lavender Pit was started in 1951, it adopted the general plan in use at all Phelps Dodge properties. Can the mining industry in the United States accept the change and challenge of the "Now Generation" of entirely new high-performance automated transportation systems? Good Question! While there has been some revolutionary new thinking and product testing in mining, none has taken place in transportation of ore and waste. With one notable exception - DASHAVEYOR - not a single really new and 'unconventional' system has even been tried on a small scale in the hardrock mines in our country. Admittedly, U.S. equipment manufacturers share the responsibility for the slow progress in mine transportation systems in our country, since they have provided very litte leadership in design innovation or education. First, let me give you my definition of what is meant by the term "Advanced Transportation Systems". Then I will describe and compare such systems, emphasizing the strong and weak features of each as they apply to vertical and horizontal haulage. I will conclude by establishing the principal requirements for implementation of these types of systems in the mining industry in the United States.

Over the past nine years a means for measuring the distance between the mine roof and floor has been developed at the White Pine Mine which yields relevant information utilized in the mining operation. The technique known as "convergence!' is an efficient, low cost way for obtaining large quantities of data for predicting roof falls, caving activity, and overall mine stability. From a limited introduction in 1964 related to monitoring an experimental longwall project, the activity of convergence measurements has been expanded to become a production tool now found in all sections of the mine. Presently, the program involves four main types of activity: 1. Monthly measurements in areas known to be active, and in sample blocks scattered throughout the mine for a long-term stability study. 2. Semi-monthly measurements along vital travel roads, belt drifts and compressor sites. 3. Weekly measurements in areas where men are working. 4. Daily measurements in pillar-recovery and caving operations. Today, one field engineer and six technicians are involved full time in convergence work. Rock Mechanics technicians have installed approximately five thousand stations since the start of the program and of this number, over twenty-five hundred active stations still comprise the mine-wide network spread over the more than five square mile extent of the White Pine Mine workings.
