An Ore bed magnetic liner element is made of permanent ceramic magnets embedded in a rubber molding. (See figure 1) They are difficult and expensive to manufacture correctly. Therefore, the lining for a complete mill is expensive, as high as 400% more than conventional rubber liners. The magnets are not very resistant to impact as they are very brittle. Mills of 12 feet or more can use only I inch balls; mills under 12 feet can use balls of 1-1/2 inches. These liners are therefore used in regrind applications with small balls or in secondary pebble mills. Rubber liners for these applications last a long time, so if life was the only consideration, the pay back for these liners would be longer than the life of the mine. The Ore bed liner and its bed of ball chips or magnetic ore is relatively thin and the surface of this bed has a high coefficient of friction. The liners are made so that opposing poles are situated next to each other and that the mill shell and the bed of ore or ball chips completes the magnetic circuit. (See figure 2) The combinations of these properties results in a very efficient liner. Due to the low profile of this bed, there is no material that is lifted too high, so we have a very compact charge with very high attrition, good for fine grinding. These liners have shown a 10% ball consumption reduction and a 10% lower power draw for the same capacity. Due to the magnetic orientation, the bed is formed in a wave shape along the lines of magnetic force. Tests conducted at a copper mine in the southwest United States have confirmed these findings. The mills where the liners were tested are 10.5 feet by 16 feet Hardinge regrind mills operating as overflow ball mills.

Mineral exploration is a key factor for success in the mining industry. However, exploration best practices are often ignored in small-scale mining. This works presents the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a methodology that measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small-scale mining with the industry best practices. The matrix has been applied to three projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the state of Pará, a small-scale manganese project in the state of Bahia, and a small-scale manganese project in the state of São Paulo. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that represent the level of maturity of the exploration program in each project and indicate priority actions for reduction of the geological uncertainty. Therefore, the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix has shown potential to be a useful tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. As a risk indicator, it may contribute to promoting investment in small-scale mining and development for communities that depend on this activity around the world.

An appropriate scale-up methodology is very useful for ball mill design and optimization of the grinding circuit. To date, the scale-up is based on the selection and breakage function method using lab mill data. However, a major drawback of that approach is that the charge motion in a lab mill is vastly different from that in a large industrial mill. Therefore, in the methodology proposed here, first the energy of individual collision in the mill is computed employing the discrete element method (DEM). Then the breakage of particles as a function of collision energy is studied in a separate experiment. Together, this information constitutes what is known as collision energy based population balance method. The appropriateness of this method is shown for 38-cm ball mill.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of amino acids (glycine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, lysine and tryptophan) and organic acids (citric, malic, tartaric, fumaric, oxalic, succinic and ascorbic acid) on gold extraction from silicate ore. Use of amino acids to extract gold was preferred compared with organic acids due to the presence of carboxylic group and amine groups in amino acids. Among the assessed amino acids, aspartic acid and glutamic acid had higher capacities to extract gold due to their structures, which lacked aromatic rings and long side chains. Organic acids could also extract gold. In particular, oxalic and succinic acids had the greatest capacity to extract gold versus the other tested organic acids. Moreover, aspartic acid had a greater capacity to extract gold from ores than the same concentration of succinic acid. We confirmed the aspartic acid and succinic acid functional groups by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The findings revealed that aspartic acid had a greater capacity to extract gold than succinic acid due to the presence of both amine and carboxylic groups (succinic acid contained only a carboxylic group). The optimal gold:aspartic acid molar ratio was 1:6 and low concentrations of aspartic acid extracted 35–42%of gold from silicate ore within 15 days. This can be used as an alternative to traditional methods for extracting gold from ore; it is non-toxic to human health and environmentally friendly.

Ball mill grinding circuits can be subject to upsets that arise from variable characteristics of the feed ore. These upsets are transients in critical circuit variables such as ball mill mass holdup, circulating load, sump level, cyclone efficiency and product particle size. They may occur frequently so that the operation is continuously fluctuating or they may be of such magnitude that some of the equipment is overloaded, resulting in shutdown, or an undesirable product particle size. The feed ore characteristics that influence ball mill circuit behavior in this manner include the grindability of the ore, the eventual transport characteristics of the ore in the mills and the feed ore size distribution. Control strategies for grinding circuits using conventional proportional-integral (PI) control have limitations to their effectiveness in controlling against feed ore disturbances. The first of these are the interactive nature of two or more control loops on a single circuit. Under some circumstances they begin to fight each other, increasing control error and settling time. PI control loop gain constants can be tuned to give best response for some set of conditions but once these change, as they would with a change in the feed ore, they are no longer the "best" ones (Shinsky, 1967). Due to these limitations, alternatives to conventional PI control strategies have been investigated for grinding as well as other mineral processing operations. These alternatives, all computer-based, include self tuning regulators, decoupling control and optimal control (Herbst and Bascur, 1983).

Cleveland's Southwest Interceptor Contracts No. 3 and No. 4 are continuations of Contract No. 1 addressed at the 1987 RETC with geology, equipment, and methods that differ greatly. The two contracts consist of 791 m (4.22 miles) of 3.5 m (11.5 ft) tunnel lined to 2.9 m (9.5 ft), nine access shafts, six drop shafts, and six collection structures. The excavation drive was completed by the use of a 1970 vintage Robbins TBM hybrid for this particular job through the use of both new and old technology. All other excavations were successfully accomplished through drill and blast method in tight residential areas. Concrete lining and connections were completed nine months after holing through.

The number and the type of trucks and shovels are two important factors in determining the optimal design parameters of an open-pit mining system. Characteristics of trucks' arrival and service-time distributions determine the performance measures of a truck-shovel system when it is modeled as a closed queuing network. In all of the previous analytical queuing studies of truck-shovel systems, trucks are assumed to be identical with respect to their arrival and service-time distributions. This assumption, although desirable for reducing computational difficulties, causes either underestimation or overestimation of the performance measures depending on the number and type of equipment used in the model. The relative error in performance measures could be significant when the number of different types of trucks and shovels is large. In this paper an analytical method is proposed to model the truck-shovel system as a multiple-chain closed queuing network. This approach would provide the capability of estimating system performance measures for planning purposes when the truck fleet is not necessarily composed of identical trucks. An example of truck-shovel systems is discussed to show how the incorporation of different types of trucks does affect performance measures.

7.1-STABILITY OF SLOPES IN SOIL AND ROCK ROBERT H. MERRILL 7.1.1-DESIGN ANALYSIS APPROACHES The analyses of slopes in soil or rock can be made through application of soil- or rock-mechanics principles. In most cases, the material in the slope wall can easily be identified as either a soil or a rock. However, there will be instances where, because of unique characteristics, the soil may behave as a rock structure, or vice versa. By necessity, these unique cases must be identified through experience or critical observation by the engineer, because there are no definitive rules clearly establishing the differences. The most important step in a solution to a slope problem is to define it. Normally, once the problem is identified, a solution usually can be found or a reasonable estimate obtained. The design analysis of a slope wall implies an evaluation of the stresses or forces in the wall, and of the ability of the material in the wall to withstand them. Therefore, the factors influencing a design analysis can be divided into two categories: those which influence stresses, and those which influence the ability of the wall to withstand stress. For simplification, the latter is termed the strength of the soil or rock. Perhaps the basic difference between analyses for soils and those for rock is in the identification of the failure surface. Soils generally do not have an identifiable failure plane. However, some soil layers in a slope wall may have different strengths. A soil slope wall may consist of a thin layer of topsoil overlying a thick, uniform clay, or a topsoil over a gravel or other materials. Therefore, the soil generally does not have a potential plane of weakness that can be identified through observation. On the other hand, rocks normally contain planes of weakness in the form of fractures, faults, joints, bedding planes or other discontinuities weaker than the intact rock, which can be found through observation and/or tests upon rock samples. If the failure surface cannot be identified, the principles of soil mechanics should apply because, in soil mechanics, the failure surface usually is assumed. If it can be identified, then the principles of rock mechanics should apply. 7.1.2-ANALYSES OF STRESSES OR FORCES IN SLOPES All existing methods of soil-slope analysis are based upon interpetations of the Coulomb and Coulomb-Navier failure criteria, commonly termed the total-stress 2nd the effective-stress criteria (Sec. 6.1). Column flotation is emerging as one of the most important new separation technologies of the decade. Attendant to this development is the need for a quantitative understanding of the dynamic characteristics of columns. An understanding of the many important sub-processes occurring in the cell makes possible the development of dynamic simulators for flotation columns which will aid in the design of control systems for dynamic and steady state optimization. This paper presents a dynamic model for the column flotation cell developed from a population balance point of view similar to that which has been successfully applied to conventional flotation cells. In particular, the mixing that occurs within the pulp is modeled with a distributed-volume, mixer-in-series model as an approximation to the axially dispersed plug flow transport that occurs in the cell. This simpler approach avoids the distributed transport model which often leads to mathematical intractability. Other phenomena dealt with are the attachment and detachment of particles from bubbles in the froth and pulp, the transport of water and the bubble volumes with the froth and pulp phases. Simulation of the flotation of an Illinois No. 6 coal in a pilot plant flotation column were performed to test control strategies.

The concentrator of Bonneville Ltd.* at Wendover, Utah, processes a feed obtained by, solar evaporation of a brine containing sodium and potassium chlorides with minor amounts of impurities. Salable potassium chloride concentrateis produced from this feed in two steps: flotation with amine reagents to concentrate the potassium chloride, and washing of the concentrate with fresh water to reach final grade. In the flotation step emphasis is placed on recovery, whereas the washing step has as its objective the production of salable grade (in excess of 60 percent K20 equivalent), with recovery being important but secondary Ideally, flotation should give maximum recovery at a concentrate grade which will permit washing to salable grade with a minimum recovery loss, thereby maximizing over-all recovery. Except for this relationship, flotation and washing are two separate and distinct operations.

The Van Stone zinc-lead mine is located in northeastern Washing- ton in Stevens County. It is about 24 km (15 miles) south of the Canadian border and 48 km (30 miles) west of the Idaho line. The deposits occur in late Cambrian age limestones and dolomites of the Metaline Formation. The bedding controls the trend of the zones containing the lenses of zinc-lead mineralization. The Van Stone property and vicinity is almost entirely covered with glacial drift averaging perhaps 6 m (20 ft) in thickness. Outcrops are very sparse. Outcropping gossan with zinc mineralization was first discovered by George Van Stone in 19 13, in what is now known as the South Ore Zone. Only minor trenching was done at that time. The property was idle until the mid- 1920s when Hecla Mining Co. drove several short adits and performed minor diamond drilling. In 1938, Willow Creek Mines of Nevada Inc. acquired the Van Stone plus adjacent parcels and commenced drilling on the known South Ore Zone. In the course of an expanded drilling program, the nonoutcropping North Ore Zone was discovered and was drilled out along a N30°E strike for about 305 m (1000 ft), beyond which point no mineralization was intersected.

Since the early days of risk management, developments in technology and guidelines (ITA, ITIG, OGG, UCA) have advanced risk management and probable cost estimating, which are now widely recognized. WSDOT’s CEVP risk-based cost validation process is now established after 20 years. This paper traces these developments, summarizes advanced techniques, and presents examples of US and international projects with results. A particular case of using advanced risk evaluation to allow enhanced-capability TBMs to be considered in a competitive bid process is presented. Further advances, including the use of digital twin risk-based representation of complex projects, are described.

Grinding circuits employed in mineral processing operations are designed to produce feed materials for beneficiation steps such as flotation and magnetic separation, which are sufficiently fine to achieve good liberation of valuable minerals from gangue without over- grinding. In many respects, grinding is the most important unit operation in a mineral processing plant. If adequate liberation is not achieved during grinding, subsequent separation steps will yield low metallurgical recoveries and/or product grades. Grinding energy requirements and operating costs typically exceed 50% of the total expenditures of the entire plant. Because grinding is an inherently energy intensive process and grinding circuit capital and operating costs are high, it is essential that such circuits be run as efficiently as possible. In- creased efficiency in grinding usually translates to a decrease in the energy required to produce a metric ton (short ton) of product size material. It is generally accepted in the mineral industry that efficient grinding circuit performance can not be achieved without the use of some form of automatic control. This is true because all circuits are subject to random disturbances which, if left unchecked, will upset circuit performance and rob a plant of productivity. Such disturbances arise from a variety of sources including natural variations in ore characteristics (particularly hardness changes), uncontrolled water additions, feed-rate upsets, changes in crusher performance, and mechanical upsets such as blockages in pumps and classifiers. Many of these disturbances occur with a frequency which is too high for an operator to detect and react to efficiently. Disturbances which occur on a time scale of several minutes up to several hours can be effectively dealt with using automatic control.

The ability of conveyor belts to transport large mass throughputs economically over previously unprepared ground has resulted in this system achieving great and extensive use. A significant component in this development is the conveyor belt itself. The development of high strength steel cord conveyor belts involves the optimising of splice design, the use of excellent rubber material especially in the splice, good craftsmanship during splice production and modern field vulcanisation equipment. The durability of a splice for belts of class St 3000 up to St 790 is expressed by the fatigue strength under dynamic stress. The results obtained with a test method and equipment developed by the University of Hannover indicate the present state of the art in this field. Belts of high nominal strength used on inclined long distance conveyors reach splice fatigue strengths of about 3000 N/mm. The design should only exploit approximately 50% of the fatigue strength determined in the tests as maximum operating stress. IMPORTANCE OF CONVEYOR BELT SYSTEMS The use of conveyor belt technology has expanded considerably over the last decades in the bulk goods transportation sector. Because of the favourable transport costs and the technology's adaptability to specific topographies, belt conveyors frequently represent the most economic solution. When flows of goods are large, as in German lignite mining operations, where masses of up to 40,000 t/h are given, it is the only technically feasible alternative. The use of belt conveyor systems allows the sensible distribution of the waste and the production of the coal (Hager, 1981). But this transportation alternative is also suitable when the masses involved are smaller. Whereas conveyor belts were only suitable for loose bulk goods up until a few years ago, today they are frequently also used for hard rock open cast mines, e.g. in the production of copper ore. Because of the favourable transport costs it is frequently still economic to use mobile crushers with a throughput of up to 10,000 t h 6 which breakdown the large blocks produced y explosives into transportable grain sizes. In many operations, trucks are only used to provide flexibility between the excavator and the crusher, i.e. over short routes, and the long, frequently steep, transport paths to the processing plant or to the spreader are undertaken by belt conveyors (Einenkel et al., 1992). The advantages of belt conveyors, i.e. to cope with large mass flows over inclines and down slopes of up to 1:4 have resulted in this system gaining very extensive use throughout the world. The conveyors can be installed over for the most part unprepared ground with suitable vertical radii, adapted to the locally available belt material. In the process individual conveyor belts with lengths of up to 15 km, and in the underground sector with lift heights of up to 1 km, have been built and operated. This great variety of application possibilities is complemented by a limited ability to pass through horizontal curves. This can be achieved with the help of design measures on the conveyor whilst bearing in mind the characteristics of the belt. STRESSING OF CONVEYOR BELTS IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLANT The advantage of conveyor belts compared with other systems is also to be found in the large available service-time window, i.e. the excellent reliability and the low costs of energy consumption and maintenance. It is in particular the reliability of a belt transport system which depends to a great degree on its main component, that is the belt - in all its different types and variations. For this reason, the belt is also given the greatest attention in the development of the individual components, because it is the belt which must be designed optimally with regard to various factors. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing designs and estimating costs for vertical in situ copper mining wells as part of its in situ mining research program. Conceptual designs and estimated costs for "deep" 1100 m (3600 ft) recovery and injection wells in an undisturbed copper ore zone are presented. Within a single in situ copper mining well, multiple perforated well completions and associated costs are discussed for two ore zones between depths of 370 m (1200 ft) and 550 m (1800 ft). The order of well specifications for designing these wells is explained.

In the Gulf Coast area lignite deposits occur in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama. Lignite has been mined in Texas since the early 1800's reaching a production of over 900,000 metric tons (1 million short tons) in 1910. With the availability of inexpensive oil and gas, production fall to as low as 16,000 metric tons (18,000 short tons) by 1950 (Henry, 1976). With the advent of the oil and gas shortage in early 1970, lignite production began to increase again. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the geotechnical considerations of mining lignite in the Gulf Coast area, particularly Texas and Louisiana. Lignite deposition occurs in unconsolidated sand, silt and clay environments. Extensive sand units saturated with water may be present within the potential mining depths. This paper describes the geotechnical considerations for designing a surface mine in this geographical area. These factors include geology, hydrology, mining method, and equipment utilization.

Mine equipment fires remain as one of the most concerning safety issues in the mining industry, and most equipment fires were caused by hot surface ignitions. Detailed experimental investigations were conducted at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Mining Research Division on hot surface ignition of liquid fuels under ventilation in a mining environment. Three types of metal surface materials (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel), three types of liquids (diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid, engine oil), four air ventilation speeds (0, 0.5, 1.5, 3 m/s) were used to study the hot surface ignition probability under these conditions. Visual observation and thermocouples attached on the metal surface were used to indicate the hot surface ignition from the measured temperatures. Results show that the type of metal has a noticeable effect on the hot surface ignition, while ventilation speed has a mixed influence on ignition. Different types of liquid fuels also show different ranges of ignition temperature. Results from this work can be used to help understand equipment mine fires and develop mitigation strategies.

We applied kriging (geostatistics) to interpret the structure of basement rock in Yucca Flat, NTS from borehole data. The estimation error for 118 data is 81 m comparable with those based on both gravity and borehole data. Using digitized topographic data, we tested the kriging results and found that the model validation process (Thomas option) on data gave a fair representation of the overall uncertainty of the kriged values.

The design of a preparation plant for minimum maintenance and clean up requires both the skills of the Engineer and the practical experience of the Operator. From the initial flow sheet and preliminary design until the plant is completed and operating, each phase of the work must be thoroughly explored for simplicity, workability and high efficiency. It is the responsibility of the Designing Engineer to develop the plant around the basic flow sheet, selecting equipment and materials not only with regards to Initial cost but also required upkeep and repair.

"The Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program was developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to help the U.S. coal mining industry to design safe retreat room and pillar panels. ARMPS calculates the magnitude of the in-situ and mining-induced loads by using geometrical computations and empirical rules. In particular, the program uses the “abutment angle” concept in calculating the magnitude of the abutment load on pillars adjacent to a gob.In this paper, stress measurements from U.S. and Australian mines with different overburden geologies with varying hard rock percentages were back analyzed. The results of the analyses indicated that for depths less than 650 ft, the ARMPS empirical derivation of a 21° abutment angle was supported by the case histories; however, at depths greater than 650 ft, the abutment angle was found to be significantly less than 21°. In this paper, a new equation employing the panel width to overburden depth ratio is constructed for the calculation of accurate abutment angles for deeper mining cases.The new abutment angle equation was tested using both ARMPS2010 and LaModel for the entire case history database of ARMPS2010. The new abutment angle equation to estimate the magnitude of the mining-induced loads used together with the LaModel program was found to give good classification accuracies compared to ARMPS2010 for deep cover cases.INTRODUCTIONIn the early 1990s, the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) was introduced by Mark (1990) as a chain pillar design software and was generally accepted and used by the U.S. coal mining industry. Following the success of ALPS, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program for designing retreat mining pillars using a similar approach as ALPS (Mark and Chase, 1997). The Australian mining industry also recognized the success of ALPS, and Colwell, Frith, and Mark (1999) calibrated the program to Australian conditions. The ALPS and ARMPS programs draw their strengths from the large databases that are used to calibrate them (Mark, 2009). However, following the Crandall Canyon Mine collapse in 2007, NIOSH had to reconsider the pillar design criteria used in deep-cover retreat mining (Mark, 2010). The ARMPS overburden load prediction algorithm was improved to more accurately predict the loading of narrow panels with high overburden depths by implementing the pressure arch concept, and this new version is called ARMPS2010."
