Introduction Heavy media separation (HMS), also called dense media or float¬sink separation, is one of the newer forms of gravity concentration. Though the concept can be traced to the last century, the process has enjoyed its major growth since 1940. Heavy liquid separation is a mutation. The heavy media process is used extensively to clean coal and for the concentration of a wide variety of ores such as those of iron, lead-zinc, chrome, manganese, tin, tungsten, fluorspar, magnesite, sylvite, garnet, diamonds, gravel, etc. It may be used where ever a significant density difference occurs between two minerals, and commercial separations are typically made in the range of 1.3 to 3.8 sp gr. The particle size treated ranges downward from 6-8 in. top size. Particles greater than about 1/16-in. (10 mesh) may be treated in a "static" bath, though for reasons of separation efficiency, + 1/2 -in- feed is usually preferred. For particles less than this size, separation in a heavy media cyclone is generally used. The flowsheet of a typical heavy media process, in this case one using a ferrous medium, is shown in Fig. I. In essence, the process consists of: (1) preparation of the feed usually by wet screening to remove undesired fines, (2) heavy medium separation, and (3) removal and recovery of the medium from the separated products. Many muta¬tions of the basic scheme are possible and numerous options are possi¬ble. HMS offers the following potential advantages:12 1) Ability to make sharp separations. 2) Ability to change the specific gravity of separation quickly to meet changing conditions. 3) Ability to remove products continuously. 4) Ability to treat a broad size range of products. 5) Ease of start-up and shutdown without loss of separating efficiency. 6) Relatively low medium cost and low media losses. 7) Low operating and maintenance costs. 8) High capacity with the use of relatively little floor space. 9) Relatively low capital investment per ton of capacity. The process may be used to produce a finished concentrate, two finished concentrates, or a concentrate and a middling of differing quality, or a preconcentrate by rejection of unwanted gangue. It is an ideal method for the reprocessing of coarse waste dumps. The greatest use for the process lies in coal cleaning and in the preconcentration of ores. The relatively inexpensive heavy media process may be used advantageously to reject large quantities of coarsely crushed gangue. When used in this way, the process will allow: (1) the use of lower cost but less selective mining methods with the "overbreak" material being removed at the front end of the concentrator or preparation plant; (2) a substantial reduction in the quantity of ore that must be finely ground for subsequent mineral liberation and separa¬tion. Since comminution is often the single most expensive step in beneficiation, it is desirable to eliminate as many essentially barren pieces of rock as possible before the grinding step, (3) a decrease in overall plant capital cost per ton of concentrate since the size of the plant from the dense medium step onward will be smaller. Several general references are available,12-18 though much of the technical data on the process is widely scattered in the general litera¬ture. Heavy Liquid Separation Organic Liquids Given sufficient settling time, it is possible to make a perfect separa¬tion between two particles of differing density by placing them in a liquid whose density is intermediate between the two. This means of achieving a perfect separation has proven to be elusive because of problems in feed preparation, particle settling rates, operational considerations, and economic constraints. There are a wide variety of heavy liquids that could be used, most of them halogenated hydrocarbons, and a few typical examples are given in Table 4. These liquids are most commonly used in ore dressing for the laboratory fractionation of ore particles on the basis of specific gravity. Laboratory Separations. Using liquids typified by those given in Table 4, separations are made to develop either the standard washability curves used to estimate the response of a given sample to gravity concentration or to prepare a partition curve to evaluate the effective¬ness of a given gravity separation process or piece of equipment. A typical washability curve is given in Fig. 2.19 Such curves are generated for raw coal, e.g., by treating either the whole or various size fractions of the sample in a series of heavy liquids and analyzing the various specific gravity fractions so produced. The procedure is relatively simple for coal samples because of the ready availability of a wide variety of relatively low cost heavy liquids in the density range 1.2¬-2.0. For ores the problem is much more complicated, because only a few high density liquids, all of rather high cost, are available. Parti¬tion curves are generated in the same manner by treating the separated products in the same liquids. Greater details on the procedures to be used in heavy liquid separa¬tions are to be found in the literature (for coal, Refs. 13, 14 and 19 and for ore, Refs. 20 and 21). For testing coal, calcium and zinc chloride solutions have been used extensively in the past, though today halogenated hydrocarbons (available under the trade name Certigrav) are the preferred media. GeoBiotics has developed a biooxidation technology (patents pending) which involves coating refractory precious metal sulfide concentrates onto a support material and biooxidizing the sulfides in a heap configuration. The concentrates are produced from low or high grade sulfidic refractory ores or existing mine tailings. The process has been found to achieve high gold recoveries asso­ciated with stirred tank biooxidation, but at the low operating and capital costs associated with whole ore heap biooxidation. Improved gold recoveries of up to 98% after biooxidation are reported for 4 representative mines or deposits. The sulfide flotation concentrates were studied using 3 and 6 in. diameter columns or 3 in. drained vats. The refractory sulfide concen­trates biooxidize rapidly in 3 to 12 weeks with substantial increases in subsequent gold recovery.

The Melbourne City Link project includes two three-lane highway tunnels, 1.6 and 3.4km long, respectively, which are both approximately 16 meters wide and 9 meters high. The tunnels will be excavated through interbedded, moderately to highly jointed siltstones and sandstones of the Silurian Age Melbourne Mudstone formation over the major parts of their lengths. The strength of the intact rock varies from less than 5 MPa to greater than 70 MPa. Based on the available information regarding the performance of large span tunnels in weak rock, it was considered that the commonly applied empirical design guidelines for tunnel support, based on rock mass classification systems, should be augmented by more explicit design methods. The support design was, therefore, validated by analytical procedures, including numerical analyses, which are described in this paper.

This paper deals with some aspects of concrete construction in remote locations and/or cold climates. The writer's experience covers 25 years in construction in western and Central Canada. I will bring forth some pertinent observations and cost facts learned from this experience. Let us start by saying that there is nothing more important than preplanning the entire project. By this I mean the production of the engineering design, working drawings, soliciting of prices and ordering of all equipment and contractors work, the delivery of all equipment and all onsite work. All of this should be placed on a master schedule, preferably a C.P.M. We have been using C.P M. Scheduling for all of our work for 5 years and have found it in-valuable. This preliminary schedule will show initial items of work and target dates. After main equipment orders are placed and deliveries confirmed, the construction schedule can be revised to include manpower and construction equipment requirements. From this information the size of camp is determined. This, of course, must be ordered several months ahead. The manpower schedule can be broken into trades to tell us the number of men of each trade required at any time. This is important in helping to determine where the men must come from and whether or not any incentive is needed to get them. The schedule will also point out if it is impossible to get the project closed in before winter becomes too severe unless overtime is worked or the project is started in early spring. In most parts of Canada cold weather starts in October and lasts through April. A common term of reference has been to wait for the frost to come out of the ground before starting work in the spring. Cement copper is ordinarily converted to marketable metal by processing in a conventional smelter and refinery. Because of rapidly increasing cement copper production and limited excess smelting capacity, other techniques were investigated for preparing marketable copper products. One route was to make copper powder for industrial use. The process scheme employed flotation for rejecting the bulk of the impurities, acid leaching to remove residual iron and aluminum, reduction sintering to eliminate oxygen, and grinding to obtain powder. Another route was to sinter the floated and leached copper into the form of anodes and electrolyze these to yield refined copper cathodes. At a current density of 30 amperes per square foot, power consumption for electrorefining was 185 kwhr per ton of copper. The feasibility of preparing commercial-size anodes by sintering is still to be assessed.

The Pinto Valley Concentrator of BHP Copper Inc. restarted its sulphide mining operations in September 2007 to produce copper and moly concentrates. During the plant production ramp up, the copper/moly circuit quickly reached the copper grade and recovery targets, but the production and quality of the moly concentrate continued to be a challenge. Even though several improvements in the moly circuit were completed, the final moly concentrate did not meet contractual specifications. After reviewing several options to improve grade and reduce contaminants, the installation of three flotation columns was chosen. The column design and construction were done utilizing in-house craftsmen and engineers. Ten days after commissioning, the columns successfully reached a steady operation and began producing moly concentrate to the required specifications, that is, high moly tenors and low copper and iron content. In this paper, the operating parameters, mass balance, design, installation, commissioning and operation of the new flotation columns will be discussed.

A ferrous chloride-oxygen leaching system was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines as a means of re-covering copper and silver from a sulfide concentrate that had been pretreated to remove a majority of the antimony. The pretreated concentrate contained Cu, Ag, Pb, Zn, Sb, and As. Parameters affecting metal extraction, such as temperature, pressure, amount of ferrous chloride, and initial hydrogen ion concentration, were studied. Copper extraction of 98 pct was achieved by leaching 4 hours at 40 pounds per?square inch gage (psig) and 1000 ?C. Copper was recovered from leach solutions by cementation with iron, and the resulting ferrous chloride was recycled. Leaching the residue with cyanide followed by electrowinning recovered 99.7 pct of the silver. Iron, Sb, As, Pb, and S reported to the tails.

Open pit mining is the strong sector of the American mining industry. In the middle of the 60's. 17-18% of the ore in metal mines was mined with underground methods. From the middle of the 60's to 1980 the production in open pit metallic mines increased from about 400 to close to 600 million short tons while at the same time the underground mine production decreased a little, from about 90 to about 80 million tons. Less than 15% of the ore prodction now come from underground mines. Large amounts of waste rock were also handled in the open pits. In the middle of the 60's about 600 milion tons were handled, in 1980 1,200 million tons were moved. This means that the average stripping ratio increased from about 1.5 to over 2.0 tons of waste rock per ton of ore, figure 1.

Tungsten-containing ores are mined on all continents of the world. China is the world's largest producer and controls the world's largest reserves. The USSR, itself a sizeable producer, is estimated to be the world's largest consumer. The major use for tungsten in the noncommunist world is in production of cemented tungsten carbides for cutting, drilling, and wear parts. Other major uses include lamp wires, steels for tools, and armaments. Real tungsten prices have been in a general decline since 1977-1979 as the tungsten market undergoes basic and lasting structural changes.

This paper discusses briefly the evaluation of chrysotile asbestos deposits in ultramafic rocks. Such deposits are limited to serpentinized peridotite and/or dunites. The purpose of any evaluation is to determine whether a deposit contains sufficient ore mineral to justify profitable exploitation. Dimensions of a mineral zone are established by conventional methods, such as mapping, ground magnetic surveys, diamond drilling or underground exploration. The value of the contained asbestos fibre Is dependent on numerous physical properties such as fibre length, strength, flexibility, as well as the actual amount of fibre present. The determination of grade is difficult. The Quebec Standard Test (Q.S.T.) is used to grade fibre according to the proportionate lengths of fibre present. A method of visual vein counting allows calculation of an approximate percent fibre together with a simulated Q.S.T. Various drilling methods are discussed, diamond drilling is favored. Bulk sampling is required to determine fibre quality. Correlation of visual techniques and laboratory methods are often difficult. Reasons for any variance are discussed. Underground bulk sampling of most potential ore zones is strongly recommended to confirm the viability of the property. Evaluation of slip fibre deposits requires greater reliance on laboratory testing as visual methods are difficult to apply. Cross fibre has greater inherent strength.

Previous studies of the Thompson and Temperly ore bodies show alteration aureoles in the Middle Ordovician host-rock limestones, dolomites and shales extending laterally as much as 60m from the ore. Thickness, texture, carbonate and clay mineralogy, major-, minor-, and trace-element contents; and carbonate carbon and carbonate oxygen Isotope compositions of the host rocks all have been significantly altered by hydrothermal processes. Organic geochemical analyses of samples from the basal 8-cm-thick carbonaceous shale bed and immediately overlying limestone bed of the Quimbys Mill Member of the Platteville Formation, collected from within the ore, the alteration aureole, and the unaltered country rock show: 1) solution of carbonates and residual concentration of organic matter, 2) decreases in the volatile (Si) and pyrolytic (S2) hydrocarbon yields In samples of the basal shale from within the ore, 3) decreases in the relative amounts of the lower molecular weight (<nC25) saturated hydrocarbons in samples from the ore, and 4) no changes in either the organic carbon isotope composition or the Rock-Eval or biomarker thermal maturation Indicators. In light of the 125-170°C depositional temperatures documented for the early marmatitic sphalerltes in these deposits by fluid Inclusion studies, the lack of thermal alteration of the organic matter suggests a relatively short mineralization episode, a conclusion supported by the relatively simple sphalerite band stratigraphy. The decreases in the volatile and pyrolytic hydrocarbon yields for shale samples from the ore supports a model for mineral deposition which obtains sulfide through reaction of brine sulfate and indigenous organic matter.

Laboratory testing was carried out to evaluate several devices for recovering clean coal from bituminous coal refuse material. The bulk of the testing focused on using a dense-medium cyclone to process -0.6-mm refuse material. A hindered-settling column and a spiral concentrator were also used to process nominal 1.2 x 0.15-mm material. Product yields and ash contents were obtained for all tests, while partition curves were generated for selected tests from which the characteristic performance parameters (relative density of separation and probable error) were determined. The results indicated that the dense-medium cyclone was capable of cleaning down to 0.037 mm, while the other devices were effective to 0.15 mm. The 31st annual American Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW) will be held at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013. Each year, one living inductee, two Medal of Merit recipients, honorees from mining?s past, an industry partnership award, as well as a special citation, are recognized by the MFSW for their respective contributions to the mining industry. James D. Toole, past president and chief executive officer of Southwest Energy LLC, will be the Hall of Fame inductee, guest of honor, and featured speaker at the awards banquet. Toole founded Southwest Energy LLC in 1973 and is credited with introducing innovative explosive technology, providing even greater value to its mining customers. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Joseph M. Keane, principal metallurgical engineer for SGS Metcon Research/KD Engineering, and Sean D. Dessureault, associate professor at the University of Arizona. Keane is recognized for his metallurgical expertise, especially in design development and pollution abatement. Dessureault is recognized for his advanced mining research, with more than 25 journal publications, and his entrepreneurship as the founder and chief executive officer of two mineral-related companies. To honor mining?s past, the hall of fame will induct Bartolomé de Medina for his invention of the patio process for recovering silver; Ben Williams for his management of the Copper Queen Mine in Bisbee, AZ; Charles E. Mills for his contributions at Morenci and Inspiration Copper and founding Apache Powder Co. and The Valley National Bank; John S. Finlay and Edwin B. Royle for their invention of the mucking machine; and Louis Caryl Graton for his ore deposits research and teaching economic geology at Harvard University.

INTRODUCTION Deformation measurements are some of the simplest and most useful measurements that can be made by the mining/rock mechanics engineer in assessing the sta¬bility of openings in rock. A number of tools and tech¬niques are presently available. This chapter will de¬scribe the most common instruments, their application, and present the equations needed for data reduction. MECHANICAL STRAIN GAGE Description of Instrument A mechanical strain gage of the Whittemore type shown in Fig. I is a useful instrument for measuring deformations of pillars, sidewalls, and roofs of under¬ground mines. Measurement gage lengths typically range from 51 to 254 mm (2 to 10 in.), and the dial indicator reads to 0.0025 mm (0.0001 in.). The instru¬ment measures the deformation between precision gage points which are anchored in the rock. The anchor points are typically grouted in small holes drilled 12.5 mm (1/2 in.) or so deep into the rock. Strain a is calculated from the measured deformation AL with the equation [ ] where L is gage length. A necessary accessory for the instrument is a master bar normally made from invar steel having a low co¬efficient of thermal expansion. This bar allows one to check the instrument for changes in the mechanical zero point and to correct for temperature effects on the measuring instrument. The instrument is available from Soiltest, Inc. for a cost of approximately $340; the cost of the master bar is approximately $55; and nonreusable brass inserts which are anchored in the rock are nominally priced at $0.27 each. All prices are for 1978. Applications Two classes of applications may be considered, one where only one measurement direction is involved and the second where three measurement directions are em¬ployed. Applications where only one measurement di¬rection is necessary include: monitoring crack or frac¬ture separation or shear movement with anchor points on opposite sides of the discontinuity; measurement of vertical strain in a pillar or sidewall; and measurement of steel support deformations with anchors in the steel members. The more general application involves a strain ro¬sette consisting of three measurement directions which for convenience are oriented 1.04 rad (60°) apart to form an equilateral triangle as shown in Fig. 2. Puerto Rico lies within the remnants of a deformed Cretaceous island arc system in the northeastern Caribbean. The Island can be divided into three broad geologic provinces: the Central Volcanic-Plutonic Province (Lower Cretaceous to middle Eocene), and the Northern and Southern Limestone Provinces (early Oligocene to middle Miocene). Known precious metal deposits are generally small and occur in veins and shear zones within Lower and Upper Cretaceous volcanic and plutonic rocks. Some Tertiary igneous rocks are also mineralized. Selected indications of disseminated lithology-controlled mineralization could represent larger deposits. Associated metals in some deposits include copper, zinc, and lead. At present, tax policies, population density, political outlook, and lack of proven significant precious metal deposits discourage the establishment of a metal mining industry.

The availability of a fluid whose gross behavior sharply changes in a magnetic field without affecting its rheologic characteristics has been recently demonstrated. A colloidal solution of a ferrimagnetic material, such as magnetite, in a liquid that is immiscible with and lighter than water is projected for use in selective separation of particles according to their density spectrum in a continuous fashion. Magnetic levitation forces were created as an antigravity field when the fluid was properly placed in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. Five spherical non¬magnetic objects with densities ranging from 2.70 to 11.35 gram cm &apos; were made to float or submerge at will in a 0.96-gram cm-3 density fluid placed at vertical magnetic field gradients ranging from 0.2 to I kilooersted cm-1. The magnetic levitation farce in dyne cm-3 was found to vary linearly as a function of the object-fluid density mismatch with a slope equal to one g, the acceleration due to gravity.

Recently developed clay deposits that will impact regional and world markets are described. These deposits, their location, geology, and physical properties are delineated. Kaolins from the State of Para in Brazil and from Ukraine; bentonites from Argentina and India; and palygorskite and sepiolite from China are world class deposits that when processed using modem technology will produce excellent products. Other deposits that may affect regional markets are l<aolins from China, Australia and Indonesia; bentonites from Georgia (formerly USSR) and China; and palygorskite from India and Ukraine. New ball clay deposits that will affect regional markets are in China and Indonesia.

Aqueous pressure oxidation at low temperature, although desirable from a process engineering and operations point of view, presents unique problems when temperatures approach 160°C (320°F). In developing the pressure oxidation process for the Lone Tree Mine, elemental sulfur formation and agglomeration with pyrite proved to be a problem. This paper discusses some of the unique features of the Lone Tree sulfide deposit and its amenability to low temperature oxidation. Problems encountered during pilot plant operation and their solutions are discussed.

Talc deposits in the Precambrian of southwestern Montana (Beaverhead and Madison Counties) are unique within the U. S. A. in that large bodies of tremolite-free talc can be open-pit mined. All known deposits are in pre-Beltian dolomite units. The origin is suspected to be metasomatic, with the siliceous component having been contributed by an intrusive Precambrian granite gneiss. Precambrian deformation was extreme and is characterized by multiple periods of tight isoclinal folding and the flowage of less competent rocks, rather than by faulting. Post- Precambrian folding has been relatively negligible; the characteristic Laramide structure is block-faulting developed along northwest-southeast trends. The talc is thought to have been formed in Precambrian time; the high-angle block-faults probably have no significance with regard to the formation of the talc, but do tend to complicate mining operations. Tremolite-free talc ore bodies with horizontal widths of more than 200 feet, vertical depths of several hundreds of feet, and strike-lengths of as much as one-half mile are known in the Ruby Range and the Gravelly Range. Where dolomite is interbedded with tremolite-free talc in the Gravelly Range, the scale of this relationship permits the use of conventional open-pit mining methods with subsequent upgrading by hand-sorting techniques. Underground mining has been used in the past, but all current Montana talc-mining operations are on the surface. The hand-sorted ore, some of which is shipped overseas, is finely ground or micronized in roller mills and fluid-energy mills. The products are distributed both nationwide and abroad.

The nonlinear network optimization algorithm developed in this paper solves the following mine ventilation design problem: find the location and size of all fans and regulators which minimize the overall system power consumption while satisfying all physical, legal, and operational constraints. This work includes the formulation of the problem within the framework of mathematical optimization, the development of the computational theory, and the creation of an efficient solution methodology. The algorithm has been implemented on a microcomputer, and a small but representative example is included. The algorithm presented in this paper has four limitations. First, the optimization process is for a single point in time: the dynamic nature of a mine ventilation system in an evolving mine is not directly addressed. Second, the topology of the ventilation network is required input information. The mathematical algorithm does not optimize the size or location of the mine ventilation airways; however, the post optimality analysis techniques can be used to aid in topological decisions. Third, the problem is formulated using volumetric flow; thus, heat and moisture transfer are ignored. Fourth, the capital cost of ventilation equipment is not included in the formulation.
