The purpose of this paper is to summarize the role of water resource monitoring in mining activities and to discuss the considerations that go into designing and implementing a monitoring program. The design of a monitoring program is invariably based on sound engineering and scientific judgement since no design formulas exist that can be universlly applied to the monitoring of all activities. As discussed in this paper, however, a methodology of designing a water resource monitoring program does exist. In order to cost-effectively monitor the water resource impacts of mining activities, the following three monitoring related items should be understood: 1. the role of water resource monitoring in the planning, construction, and operational stages of mine development, 2. the available water resources monitoring methods and the proper role of each method in the various scages of mine development, and 3. the strategies that should be followed in designing and implementing a water resource monitoring program.

COAL CHARACARISTICS AND PREPREPARATION REQUIREMENTS Preparation and Market Specifications The national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) established by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1977 require that when coal is burned, the environmental degradation should be a minimum. For this reason, even coal containing low ash and sulfur must be used in compliance with the NAAQS. The most important pollutants resulting from the combustion of coal are ash, SO2, and NOx gases, and the particulate matter escaping with the combustion gases. The ash is the residue left after complete combustion of coal. It results from the inorganic mineral matter existing in the coal before it is burned. The SO2 results from the combustion of inorganic and organic sulfur associated with the coal. The inorganic sulfur may occur as pyrite, marcasite, or as sulfate sulfur of mostly iron and calcium. The authorities disagree in the definition of organic sulfur in the coal. However, according to ASTM Standard D2492-77,1 the organic sulfur is that sulfur occurring in the coal after subtracting the sum of pyrite and sulfatic sulfurs from the total sulfur in the coal. The NOx gases are produced from high temperature oxidation of nitrogen in the coal that is released into the atmosphere. The particulate matter may consist of fly ash and unburned coal. Selective Mining The cleaning of coal from included ash and sulfur-bearing materials should start at the working faces of surface or underground mines. This can be done by (1) mining only those seams which meet certain quality standards, (2) not mining sections of the seams which may cause deterioration in overall quality of the mined coal, and (3) using a mining method that allows selective mining of coal areas or horizons either underground or on the surface. Since these steps improve the coal quality before the coal reaches the preparation plant, they can be considered to constitute precleaning of coal. During the exploration and development stage of a mine, core and channel samples taken from the coal seam are used to determine (1) petrographic analysis and physical properties,2 (2) character of roof and floor of the seam, 3,4 (3) character and quality of impurities,5 (4) proximate and ultimate analysis, and (5) washability characteristics. However, all of these parameters are subject to considerable variation even within the same seam during the advance of the coal face. This creates a problem in meeting the market demand for coal quality if the coal is to be shipped directly from the mine. If the mining operation is large enough, special blending silos or mechanical blending systems may have to be used to provide uniform quality to the market. Introduction Though temporarily shutdown due to the depressed economy, the Henderson mine is a large underground molybdenite producer, using a continuous panel-caving mining system. The location of the ore body requires access from the surface through three shafts, the collars of which are located about 3.15 km (10,350 ft) above sea level. At this altitude, normal temperatures are such that heat must be added to intake-ventilation air for about half of each year. This prevents ice from building up in the intake shafts, waterlines from freezing underground, employee discomfort, and equipment-related problems such as pneumatic rock drill icing and cold starting of diesel engines. Because of topographic and environmental constraints, the Henderson mill and concentrator are located 24 km (15 miles) from the mine, on the west side of the Continental Divide. All ore from the mine is transported to the mill by an electrified rail haulage system, with 15.4 km (9.6 miles) of the trip being underground through a double-track tunnel. A shaft at the midpoint of the tunnel exhausts air drawn from the mine and from the portal that is at an elevation of 2.7 km (8,950 ft). Intake air at the portal must be heated for part of the year to prevent ice buildup. Mine Ventilation System The mine ventilation system uses three sources of fresh air and two exhausts. The primary freshair intake is No. 3 shaft. It is concrete lined to a diameter of 7 m (23 ft) for a total depth of 698 m (2,291 ft). An airflow of 755 m3/s (1.6 mil¬lion cfm) is supplied to this shaft by two vane-axial 932-kW (1,250-hp) fans on the surface. The air is distributed within the mine by means of fresh-air distribution levels connected to production and development levels by raises. A secondary source of fresh air to the mine is provided by No. 2 shaft, the primary man and material access. This shaft is concrete lined to a diameter of 8.5 m (28 ft) for a total depth of 946 m (3,105 ft). Downcast airflow is induced by a pressure differential produced by the fans in the system such that net intake and exhaust volumes are equal. The No. 2 shaft flow of 165 m3/s (350,000 cfm) enters the mine network from the production and haulage levels. Exhaust air is moved from the various working levels through connecting raises to exhaust col¬lection levels that return it to No. 1 shaft. No. 1 shaft is the primary mine exhaust. It is concrete lined to a diameter of 7 m (23 ft) for a total depth of 788 m (2,584 ft). Three vane-axial 932-kW (1,250-hp) exhaust fans are located at the collar of No. 1 shaft, producing a flow of 850 m3/s (1.8 million cfm). In addition, an airflow of 71 m3/s (150,000 cfm) from the intake distribution level is exhausted via the haulage tunnel, by means of No. 4 shaft located midway in the tunnel. The main features of the mine ventilation network are summarized in Fig. 1. The expanding: demand for ilmenite for use in the manufacture of titanium pigments, the knowledge that much of this raw material comes from distant points and therefore has to include a heavy freight charge in the price of the delivered product, and the further knowledge that ilmenite occurs both in the crystalline rocks of northern New Jersey and also in some of the Triassic igneous rocks, were considerations which led to a search for ilmenite-bearing sands in southern New Jersey. That this search was successful is now history, and it is the senior author's privilege to state here that most of the credit belongs to his associates who did all of the heavy work of hand-augering for samples, and who made all of the heavy-mineral separations. We all are grateful to members of the Department of Geology at Rutgers and Princeton Universities for the use of equipment which enabled us to evaluate certain samples from our ilmenite exploration program. In addition, we wish to express our appreciation to many companies for their cooperation and for their permission to publish mineral and chemical analyses. "Longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique is one of the important methods for underground thick seam extraction in China. The coal seam in LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom-coal and top-coal. The bottom-coal is mined by conventional longwall method while the top-coal is mined by caving method. The top-coal caving process in LTCC and block caving process in metal mine are both gravity flow of loose ore/coal blocks. However, the presence of caving shield in LTCC makes the characteristics of drawing body shape in the two caving processes differ a lot. This paper discusses the influence of caving shields on the characteristics of drawing body shapes in light of recent studies of the top-coal drawing process. The theoretical model for describing the drawing body shape in LTCC is proposed both along the seam strike and seam inclination. Then, the experimental data are used to validate the correctness of the theoretical model. Furthermore, two examples of how the theoretical findings assist LTCC mining are given and discussed.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique have been widely used for extracting thick coal seams in China. About 0.6–0.7 billion metric tons of coal come from longwall top-coal caving panels every year. The maximum annual production is 15 million metric tons per panel _The mining method employed in such panel is a combination of top-coal caving mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique, which is suitable for seam height between 12–20 m, as shown in Figure 1. Apart from China, LTCC has also been employed in some coal mines in Australia and Vietnam (Le et al., 2017).The coal seam in a LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom coal and top coal. Production reporting is a natural computer application and is often one of the first applications implemented by new computer users. Automation of a manual reporting system is a good place for new computer users to gain computing experience because generation of basic reports - is fairly straightforward, and automation can often be justified easily on the basis of clerical cost savings. Computers are particularly well-suited for reporting applications which generally satisfy the criteria for effective computerization. Three characteristics must be present to effectively utilize a computerized system: 1) The potential application must be precisely definable. If an algorithm for data processing cannot be developed, data cannot be processed. 2) The operation to be performed must be repetitive. If a particular function is only going to be performed once, computerized systems development is probably not justified. 3) The volume of the data to be processed must be relatively large. If only a few items of data must be manipulated, manual methods are probably adequate. Although a computer can perform only a few functions (it can compute; it can make comparisons; it can rearrange data), it can perform these functions much faster and more accurately than a human being can. The ability to classify and reclassify data in a variety of ways and the ability to summarize data make the computer an ideal tool for production reporting. Production reports can be classified into three major categories, depending on their purpose. Reports can be used for (1) informative, (2) analytical, and (3) control purposes.

"Mixed ground tunnels come in all kinds. In rock tunnels with possible faults and high pressure water, the challenges are many. With the advent of Crossover TBMs, contractors can minimize machine wear in such conditions while maximizing efficiency. The newest generation of Crossover is exemplified by two projects in Albania and Turkey. A 5.56 m Crossover TBM destined for Turkey’s Gerede Water Transmission will be assembled using Onsite First Time Assembly (OFTA) from within an existing tunnel. The unique machine will bore through 30 fault zones requiring the TBM to be sealable to up to 20 bar so pre-consolidation grouting can be done. If boring under pressure is required, the TBM will bore sequentially using the screw conveyor fore and aft gates. Skewing further towards hard rock, a unique 6.2 m diameter Double Shield TBM with Crossover features was designed for Albania’s Moglicë Headrace Tunnel. The machine features closure doors and a sealing system to contain inrushes of water until they can be grouted off. This paper will discuss the unique aspects of the Crossover designs, including their inception as based on past projects in difficult ground, and their utilization at the two current projects. INTRODUCTION Specialized tunnel boring machines have been made for years to tackle specific types of ground conditions. Traditional types of TBMs bore within a specific set of ground conditions. If a project is located in a competent granite face, then a Main Beam machine is a good solution. In soft ground, Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines are the method of choice. Years of experience and engineering advancements have made both types of machines fast and economical solutions for tunneling. Unfortunately not all ground conditions are a perfect swath of one material, and the need for a more diverse machine is apparent."

An innovative biological treatment system designed to detoxify cyanide and nitrate and immobilize metals from cyanide leach operations is described. A pilot-plant demonstration was conducted to detoxify cyanide and immobilize several metals from a process stream at the McCoy/Cove Mine. Testing was performed under the EPA's Mine Waste Technology and Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation Demonstration Programs. This technology was successful in detoxifying cyanide and effective in removing metals. The pH was consistently neutralized and nitrates were successfully removed. Results show that biological treatment can offer an innovative, cost-effective alternative for the treatment of mining wastewaters.

The beneficiation characteristics of low grade Birmingham red iron ores of the Big Seam and Ferruginous Sandstone seams were investigated using flotation and magnetic separation after reduction roasting. Samples of Bib Seam Ore responded more readily to concentration than the Ferruginous Sandstone ores. The impurities inherent with the iron oxide minerals limit the grade of concentrates recoverable from these ores to a maximum of about 61% Fe if reasonable iron recoveries are sought. Flotation concentrates assaying 60-61% Fe and about 0.1% P with attendant iron recoveries of about 63% were achieved from Big Seam ore charges while those obtained from the low phosphorus Ferruginous Sandstone samples analyzed 54-56% Fe. Reductive roasting and magnetic separation of ground charges of the two ore samples yielded concentrates assaying 60-61% Fe. Iron recoveries were better than those achieved by flotation, but the magnetic products of Big Seam ore were high in phosphorus (0.2-0.3% P).

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently developed a series of validated models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study the effects of air-blocking shelves on airflows and respirable dust distribution associated with mediumsized surface blasthole drill shrouds as part of a dry dust collector system. Using validated CFD models, three different air-blocking shelves were included in the present study: a 15.2-cm (6-in.)-wide shelf; a 7.6-cm (3-in.)-wide shelf; and a 7.6-cm (3-in.)-wide shelf at four different shelf heights. In addition, the dust-collector-to-bailing airflow ratios of 1.75:1, 1.5:1, 1.25:1 and 1:1 were evaluated for the 15.2-cm (6-in.)-wide air-blocking shelf. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models. The effects of air-blocking shelves and dust collector-to-bailing airflow ratios were identified by the study, and problem regions were revealed under certain conditions. IntroductionSurface blasthole drilling can generate considerable amounts of respirable silica dust. These high dust concentrations can be exacerbated by the high silica content as drilling cuts through silica-bearing materials such as sandstone and shale, causing overexposures for miners to respirable silica dust. These overexposures can lead to silicosis, an occupational lung disease that has no cure and is often fatal. A review of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) respirable silica dust sample database from 2010 to 2016 for metal/nonmetal mining shows the following overexposure rates for occupations related to blasthole drilling: • 14.1 percent of rotary air drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (22 out of 156 samples).• 5.8 percent of rotary drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (nine out of 155 samples).• 7.3 percent of drill helpers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (three out of 41 samples).• 7.5 percent of blasters/shotfirers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (three out of 40 samples)."

The mineral zircon is mined for use as specialty foundry sands, abrasives, ores of ZrO2 and zirconium metal, refractories, and zirconium chemicals. It is produced as one of several products from heavy-mineral sand deposits associated with fossil shorelines. Because of its low coefficient of thermal expansion, its high melting point, its high refractive index, and its chemical inertness, it is an attractive refractory material. Zircon varies from deposit to deposit in terms of grain size, grain shape, and chemical impurity. Thus, there is a wide range of commercial products differing in impurity levels, particle shapes, and grain sizes.

"Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) Segmental Tunnel Linings have successfully been used for over 20 years in the UK and have been adopted in a number of high profile projects such as High Speed 1, Crossrail, Thames Tideway, as well as High Speed 2. Tunnel linings and especially SFRC design are not covered in the Eurocodes. This shortage of SFRC tunnel design rules seems to be partially addressed by several international publications. However, in the UK, the ‘design-assisted by testing’ (DAT) approach has also been adopted. The Paper discusses the UK’s best design practice and focuses on the DAT methodology as applied in the case of the 6.9km (4.3miles), 7.8m (25.6 feet) ID Lining for the £635million Lee Tunnel Project. The design approach, the full scale testing at the Building Research Establishment (BRE), and the construction innovations are presented. This experience will be transferred to the £4billion Thames Tideway Tunnel.INTRODUCTIONSteel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) has been used for Tunnel segments for more than 20 years. The first application of SFRC in the UK was for the Heathrow Baggage tunnel (1994). Since then significant size tunnels have been designed and constructed, such as the Jubilee Line (1999) High Speed 1 (CTRL, 2006), Crossrail (2014), Lee Tunnel (2014) and the scheduled 25km Thames Tideway (‘Super Sewer’) and High Speed 2 rail tunnels. However one the main obstacles in achieving streamlined design and improving efficiency are the lack of appropriate design guidelines for SFRC tunnel segments. This issue will – to some extent – be addressed by a number of current documents on tunnel FRC design either being produced by BSi (PAS8810, expected 2016), ACI (544.R) and ITAtech (Design Guideline PCFRC, 2015) in an effort to advance the design of SFRC and take into consideration the recent developments in Steel and Macro-Synthetic FRC technology."

A theoretical and experimental study was made of the surface phenomena occurring in a silicate - sulfonate system and a silicate -amine system, Experiments were conducted varying the collector concentration to examine its effect both on the total surface sorption and the rate of sorption. The results were compared to a theoretical model based on a Langmuir-type isotherm, Finally, the flotation behavior of selected silicate minerals was predicted from the sorption results and an explanation for the flotation of silicates postulated on the basis of both the theoretical predictions and experimental data.

The 191 million acres of public lands that are managed as National Forest System Lands contain extensive geologic habitat for over 40 industrial minerals. The Forest Service actively encourages exploration for and development of industrial mineral deposits within the National Forests. However, due to competing interests, the Forest Service may not always be able to accommodate industry needs. In order to successfully compete with ever-increasing demands for all resources in the 1990's, industry needs to become more active in public involvement and education and in communicating its contributions and needs to public land managers.

Geologically and commercially, the term diatomite is applied to the nearly pure sedimentarv accumulation of diatom frustules- the microscopic skeletons of unicellular aquatic algae belonging to the class of golden brown algae, bacillariophyceae. The sediments are fine-grained, siliceous, and consist primarily of amorphous opaline silica with only minor amounts of organic residue, secondary minerals, and co-deposited non-diatomaceous or crystalline clastic debris. In the geological sense, the name diatomite implies sedimentary accumulations that have reached appreciable thickness and when thick enough, such accumulations consequently may have possible commercial potential. Although the term diatomite is popularly and inappropriately applied to any sediment in which there is an abundance of diatom frustules, alternative terminology is more correctly employed to describe the less pure diatomaceous sediments, for example: clay-bearing diatomite or diatom-bearing clay. Synonyms in current usage include diatomaceous earth and kieselghur. More antiquated and obsolete terminology includes tripoli-powder, tripolite, and infusorial earth. Worldwide, diatomites occur within Tertiary to Recent lacus- trine and marine sedimentary facies. Although diatomite is wide- spread throughout the world, deposits that contain high purity, commercially versatile ore are uncommon. Physical properties of the diatom and of processed diatomite that provide unique commercial value in a broad spectrum of market end-uses include ornate fine structure, low bulk density, and high porosity and surface area. Properties of equal importance are mild abrasiveness, high absorptive capacity, insulating ability, relative inertness, and high brightness. End-use markets are diverse and range from insulating brick and absorbents through quality sensitive filter aids and premium quality functional fillers. Notwithstanding both the economic attractiveness of the specialty markets and the commercial versatility of the high purity deposits, deposits of lesser purity are mined in nearly all parts of the world for less demanding uses. Mining costs are minimized through open pit quarrying, but in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America underground mining methods are also employed. Blasting is not required because diatomite is soft and easily broken loose with mechanized equipment. Following gentle crushing, the ore is dried, milled, and processed into one of three broad categories of products: naturally milled, straight calcined, and flux calcined grades. Each of these principal categories is further subdivided into additional grades through particle size adjustment of the powders. Agglomeration of particles, alteration of fine structure, and color change are achieved through calcination. Flux calcination further accentuates these changes. Production throughout the world is dominated by the United States, followed by Romania, the former Soviet republics, and France. Other major producers include Spain, Mexico, Iceland, Korea, Japan, and Germany. Denmark is a major producer of Moler earth products, which consist of a diatomite-clay mixture. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The first industrial use of diatomite can be traced back some 2000 years to the Greeks and to the use of diatomaceous earth as a component in lightweight building brick and in ceramic pottery. It was not until the mid-1800s, however, that the unique properties of diatomite were first recognized and the market end-uses explored and developed. One of the most important of the early uses followed the development of dynamite by Alfred Nobel in the mid-1860s, whereupon diatomite was used as a component of the explosive to improve stability and safety. Other early uses included low temperature insulating and refractory bricks and as a component in insulating and fireproofing construction panels. During the 1920s, processing technology underwent a very rapid evolution with the development of calcination, flux calcination, and air classification technologies. Through these technologies, innumerable different size and grade classifications could be made for market applications and for rapidly diversified end- uses. Today, the application of processed diatomite for filter aid is the largest of the quality sensitive end-uses. Specific filtration uses include the clarification of beer, wine and liquor, vegetable oil, syrup and sugar, pharmaceuticals, and swimming pool water, to name a few. As a functional filler and extender, processed diatomite is ideally suited for application in paint, rubber, and plastic formulations. Other filler applications include use as an anti-blocking agent in plastic film, anti-caking agent for fertilizer, thermal insulating material, catalyst carrier, polish, abrasive, pesticide and fertilizer carrier, and chromatographic supports. Throughout much of the world diatomite is still used as a component of insulating brick and as an absorbent.

My "outside exploration" began in November 1908, only 16 months after I had come to Bisbee as a raw engineer. The well publicized reputations of eminent engineers up to that time, including John Hayes Hammond, Herbert Hoover, James Douglas, D.C. Jack- ling, J. Park Channing, and a few others had been due to new mines they had found or brought to successful operation. And here was I, a mere youngster, given a chance to join the group. I knew there would be disappointments but I had no idea how many of them. In spite of the many prospects that turned out to be worthless I never looked at a new one without the feeling that this one might turn out to be the big success. This confidence, blind as it was, gave every arduous examination a zest and it made me climb every mountain on which the owner said there was something worth seeing, or on which T could see a distant staining that might mean ore. If I looked at every showing the owner suggested he at least would think I was honest and would bring other properties to our attention. This reputation of never refusing to go to see an outcrop, no matter how hot the desert sun or how rough the terrain, was probably one of my best assets. High as my hopes were at the start, they proved not to be exaggerated and if I were given a chance to do it again I would not hesitate, in spite of the jaundice, rheumatic fever, and other maladies that beset some of the expeditions. On the whole the results have equaled all my hopes. Toward the end of my years of active exploration I totaled up the score. Out of the prospects submitted to us about two out of three were eliminated after questioning the owner or prospector, without an examination. This left about a 1000 mines or prospects that seemed worth at least a preliminary look. One out of seven of these was worth a little development and a seventh of this seventh turned out to be a modest success or better. And nine or ten in all, or one out of 1000

There are two approaches to developing a minicomputer based application for an industrial grinding circuit. Usually, the control program is coded and compilation-debugged on a large-scale scientific computing system or the minicomputer itself if the machine is available. Final debugging and testing must wait for installation and checkout of the entire minicomputer system. Two immediate disadvantages of this approach are the need to obtain, install and check out the hardware before the final debugging stages of program development can begin, and interference with normal mill operation during such final testing. This work reports on an alternative to the usual procedure. Here both compilation and execution bugs are eliminated from the application program before hardware installation by testing the control program against a reasonable dynamic simulation of the entire process. Thus, software development can be completed before the target mini is installed. Such off-line development requires a reasonably accurate mathematical model for the entire process system as well as a suitable simulation package for communication between the simulated environment and the minicomputer application program. Specific data describing the design configurations and dimensions of the mills, cyclones, sumps, pump characteristics and analog controller configuration were supplied by ANAMAX for a grinding division consisting of a rod mill followed by two ball mills in parallel. This information was used to set up a plausible model structure. Steady state ANAMAX data on particle size analysis at various points in the circuit and corresponding values of flow rates, pump speeds, sump heights and slurry densities were used for model parameterization. The preferred operating control strategy - "best grind at operator-set rod mill feed rate" - was set by ANAMAX. An inferential particle size analysis technique using the cyclone cluster as an on-line particle size sensor was used in a novel control strategy_ to achieve the stated objective. Two disturbances common in the ANAMAX circuits - rod mill scoop pluggage and shut down/start up of one of the ball mills - were studied in detail. This report out- lines the steps in system development and testing and the results obtained.

Longwall mining has not received a great deal of attention in the United States; however, this system offers many advantages over the conventional room-and-pillar methods now being used. In order to conserve the coal resources of this country, the U. S. Bureau of Mines has investi¬gated the feasibility of adapting European longwall mining methods to American coal seams. Their studies showed longwall mining to be well suited to thinner seams and, greater depths; and, in addition, permitted almost 100 percent recovery of the coal. Most, experiments with this method resulted in higher overall production-costs than were commonly obtained with highly mechanized room-and-pillar techniques This high cost-was largely due to the excessive amount of labor required to maintain adequate roof support with conventional longwall mining techniques. With the substitution of hydraulic-powered, self-advancing roof support systems for conventional supports, this excessive labor cost has been decreased, and longwall mining costs are now competitive with those of modern room-and-pillar mining.

The problems of the domestic merchant fluorspar producers are more or less common with those of many other producers of metallic and non-metallic minerals. For more than ten years the American fluorspar producers have seen an ever lowering price in the market-place for the fluorspar product, while their labor and material costs-continue to mount steadily. This cost-price squeeze has forced out of business all but a few of the merchant producers, and only two captive producers continue to operate, and one of them has announced early curtailment. The prices of domestic fluorspar, of all grades, have declined because of the competition from cheaper foreign imports, principally from Mexico, Spain and Italy. Tariff protection on fluorspar, particularly on the highest or acid grade, has never been sufficient to cover the production cost differential between foreign and domestic fluorspars. Low ocean and barge freight rates have also contributed to the barring of the product of domestic mines from, the major consuming centers along the Gulf and East Coast. Because of the freight disadvantage, all but one or two fluorspar producers in the western states have had to suspend business. More than 80% of the domestic fluorspar is being produced in Illinois and Kentucky fluorspar districts which adjoin on both sides of the Ohio River.

Increasing conveyor capacity and reliability is a common goal for many underground mines. This task is especially challenging when you must work with existing structure, belt, etc. Meeting this challenge, The Pittsburgh & Midway Coal Mining Co. North River Mine switched from constant fill to actively controlled fluid couplings, realizing a capacity increase from 2,100 tons per hour (2,300 stph) to 2,550 tons per hour (2,800 stph), with improved reliability. This paper will present a case study of The Pittsburgh & Midway Coal Mining Co.'s North River Mine underground conveyor haulage system. These conveyors included the main line conveyors as well as a tension controlled tripper booster panel conveyor. Characteristics and performance of the coupling and control system will be illustrated, demonstrating the systems controllability, simplicity, and dependability.
