The paper’s intent is to evaluate pumpable foamed cementitious mine seal material by determining the shear strength of a generic foamed cement in the laboratory. The tests were conducted on three scales: small-size specimens, consisting of cylinders 4 in. in diameter or 3-in. prisms; double shear medium- size specimens, measuring 13 in. by 10 in.; and large-size specimens, measuring 6 ft by 4 ft by 4 ft. The small-specimen shear tests resulted in average peak and residual shear strengths of 128 psi and 56 psi, respectively. These values are fairly consistent with published shear strengths of foamed cementitious material. However, the other two types of shear tests did not achieve the shear strength of a typical pumpable foamed cementitous mine seal material. Based on the test results, the paper concluded that the structural analysis of cement foam seals should be based on their residual shear strengths, approximately 20 psi, determined from small laboratory-scale tests of the cement foam/concrete or rock interface, and not be based on their peak strengths.

This paper is a presentation of findings based upon an econometric model of the world zinc industry. The model was developed as a simple but useful aid for long-run forecasting and planning purposes. A structure was developed for both simulating real zinc price effects on production and consumption, and for forecasting long-run annual zinc prices and supply/ demand levels. Moreover, a methodology is provided to incorporate the effects of: (1) historic technological advances in zinc supply, and (2) the development of the competitive plastics industry. Finally, reduced form equations are used to generate ex post forecasts to evaluate the model's performance.

The Detroit River Outfall No. 2. is an effluent water conveyance system linking the Detroit Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Detroit River. The 6.4m (21ft) finished diameter tunnel extends 1,890m (6,200ft) east from the bottom of a 91m(300ft) deep, 9.2m (30ft) diameter drop shaft. At the eastern terminus of the tunnel, six Riser Shafts connect the tunnel to diffuser heads on the riverbed. The tunnel runs through a highly fractured Limestone formation capable of producing high levels of groundwater in?ows and Hydrogen Sul?de gas. Control of this water and gas was a theme which ran through the entire Project’s design and construction. This paper will provide an overview of each portion of the Project’s construction, including the Entrance Shaft, Precast Concrete Segments, TBM Tunnel, Pre-Excavation Grouting Methods, and the Riser Shafts.

India’s most extensive renewable energy expansion program targets 280 GW of solar energy by 2030. Due to the massive generation of photovoltaic waste (expected 34,600 T by 2030), stringent recycling effort to recover metal resources from endof- life PVs is required for resource recovery, circular economy, and subsequent reduction in the environmental impact. The present study investigates the recycling potential of end-of-life silicon solar modules. The feed characterization reveals that most of the values in PV modules are concentrated in the frame (pure Al), Si wafer (72–84% Si, 9–12% Al, and 0.13–0.71% Ag), and electrical connections (Cu wire coated with Sn). The Si and Ag values in the feed were beneficiated using water fluidization, and concentrate with 90% Si and 2% Ag was attained in the underflow concentrate. Ag values were recovered in the form of AgCl by leaching in nitric acid and precipitation. After the purification step, the residue containing 99% Si can be further utilized to fabricate Si wafer and Al-Si alloy. The preliminary cost estimations suggest that the proposed process is economically viable for the recycling of solar panels with the maximum value generated from the AgCl precipitate followed by Al panels and Si wafers.

In the post war years metals analysts and statisticians have generally tracked the demand for metals in line with changes in OECD industrial production (IP) growth rates because, undoubtedly, the correlation between IP growth and metal demand was reasonable. However the correlation was exaggerated. During times of expanding IP growth metal demand increased at a faster proportional rate than IP growth. This was probably due to industry restocking in anticipation of growing demand at the start of each economic cycle. Conversely, metal demand would slacken at a greater rate than would be suggested by negative IP growth as industry destocked in order to reduce costs. Nonetheless, overall, a reasonable correlation between IP growth, over the longer term, and metal demand could be painted. Yet, although this correlation has stood well since the last world war it has been based on the fact that the bulk of the world's IP growth stemmed from the industrialized countries of the western world, latterly including Japan. The so called "developing world" was of little consequence, whilst countries of the Soviet Union and Communist Bloc were deemed to be closed, self-contained entities which, for each metal, would either be net exporters or importers. These quantities would be used by analysts to calculate the overall supply/demand equation for the western world only and to deduce whether a commodity was in shortage or surplus. It is now believed that this method of projecting total world supply and demand for raw materials is outdated and takes little account of the worldwide political changes which have occurred since the collapse of communism and the revitalization of China, albeit under a notional communist government. It is no longer appropriate to assess global balances for raw materials on the basis of three economic blocs namely, western world, developing world and communist bloc. Rather, global balances need to be projected on a global basis. In this regard, since the collapse of communism and the removal of many other totalitarian regimes, capitalist forces are at work and are attempting to satisfy, with some considerable success, the expectations of the great mass of the world's poorer people. Such people, usually located in Asia, Africa and Latin America have aspired to the same standard of living as people living in western Europe, North America and Japan. Now, with free market forces at work their aspirations will start to be met. Consequently, the demand for metals and other raw materials will now rise at a much faster rate than at any other time in the world's history. Not only will the production of raw materials have to keep pace with rising IP in the developed world but will also have to keep pace with the demands associated with the rising expectations of rapidly increasing populations in the developing world, as well as from within the old communist bloc countries. This paper sets out to argue the case that metal demand could well increase at a rate faster than the world's mining companies, governments and financiers can deliver.

In response to concerns voiced by local, state, and federal agencies and various environmental groups, the Central Florida Phosphate Industry and various governmental agencies have been investigating methods to accelerate the consolidation of waste clays generated during phosphate washing and beneficiation processes. The objectives of research efforts have been to reduce the storage volumes required for clay waste, accelerate reclamation and to return the land to approximate pre-mining topography. Government and industry research to accelerate waste clay consolidation has evolved two general methods: gravity thickening and chemical flocculation. Gardinier, Inc. one of the phosphate mining companies, evaluated the use of synthetic (polyacrylamide) flocculants as an alternate waste clay thickening method in response to mining conditions encountered at their Fort Meade Mine and the proposed North Hardee County extension of the Fort Meade mine (Figure 1). After considerable research and evaluation, the Alsthom-Atlantic Clariflux Super-flocculation method was chosen by Gardinier, Inc. as a method to seriously consider for use at their Fort Meade mine.

Several processes involving injection of sorbent and humidification water downstream of the air preheater in a coal-fired boiler unit, are being developed as low capital cost retrofit S02 control options. Extensive laboratory work, pilot plant programs and larger scale programs have developed performance data and design information. Many of these programs were supported by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) as "proofs-of-concept" of three different processes proposed by Dravo, Bechtel and General Electric. Based on these project results, DOE formulated a comprehensive in-duct sorbent injection development program to fully commercialize the technology by 1992. Also, EPRI will conduct a 4 MWe pilot program to develop its HYPAS process. The Consol Coolside process is scheduled for utility demonstration in 1989 on a 104 MWe unit at the Ohio Edison Edgewater Station under partial sponsorship of the DOE Clean Coal Technology Program.

Leaching of waste material at Kennecott's Chino Mines Division at Santa Rita, New Mexico, has been accompanied by increasing difficulty in circulating leach solutions through the dumps. As a means of recognizing existing problems and considering alternative applications of the leaching concept, a leaching research program was proposed which could be applied to a specific, typical waste dump. Conclusions derived from the area could then be applied to other leaching areas at Chino. Associated with the program was an evaluation of the physical characteristics of the area using Chino's drilling and radiation logging techniques.

Research efforts have been made to characterize a refractory Brazilian bauxite ore composed basically of gibbsite, kaolinite and quartz. Detailed polished-section microprobe analysis of the unbroken ore has been used to describe the liberation characteristics and the association between mineral phases. The linear grade distributions for selected particle size fractions were determined by means? of a particular implementation of King's Random Fracture Model that uses the exponential model for the distribution of linear intercepts through both dispersed (kaolinite) and continuous (gibbsite) phases. The corresponding volumetric grade distributions were then determined by means of a constrained optimization technique for the solution of the transformation equation. Batch flotation experiments were carried out to determine the kinetics for particles of different sizes and the results correlated with the liberation spectrum for each size class.

Proceeds from industrial mineral mining in Nevada were approximately equal to those from metal mining during the barite boom in the late 1970s and early 1980s; however, since then the economic importance of industrial minerals has been overshadowed by gold mining (Fig. 1). The total value of industrial minerals mined in Nevada increased by about 60% during the 1980s, reaching an estimated $306 million in 1990 before falling slightly in 1991. The state's most important industrial mineral commodities, in order of estimated value, are aggregate, lithium carbonate, diatomite, lime, cement, gypsum, barite, clay, silica, and magnesia (Fig. 2). Industrial minerals produced on a smaller scale are colemanite, dimension stone, dolomite, perlite, salt, and zeolite. In 1991 industrial mineral commodities other than aggregate were produced at 39 operations in Nevada. Most of these operations are located near the two major metropolitan areas of the state, or along the major transportation routes (Fig. 3).

The mineral industry and individual processing plants are large consumers of energy. While energy conservation has received some attention in the present Federal Administration National Energy Strategy proposal it is obvious that the mineral industry should also continue to emphasize energy consumption reduction for important economic savings alone. As indicated by other studies, comminution is the largest single consumer of energy in the mineral processing plant (1.3% of total electrical energy consumption in the U.S.A.).1 Fine grinding is the largest portion of this amazing statistic. While substantial energy savings have been demonstrated by new machine developments and improved control methods, undoubtedly there are additional areas in comminution where substantial progress can be made. Some time ago, the U.S. Department of Energy published a report on "Comminution and Energy Consumption" by a committee composed of experts in the field of comminution from industry and academia. They identified the following potential for energy savings by specific areas? Classification device design 9-13% Comminution device design 3-16% Control 9% Grinding additive 3-6% Materials 3% It is apparent that the classification device had the first or second highest savings potential. Obviously, serious research consideration must be given to this technology area. A series of three papers have previously been written on the subject of two stage classification research work for ball mill operation by the authors. Accordingly, a brief review will be made. Previous Research Results on Two Stage Classification The hydrocyclone was selected as the type of classification equipment for this study as it represents by far the majority of the devices used in ball milling. While four different hydrocyclone circuits have been proposed by others,3 only two were considered in this work as illustrated in Figure 1. An easy to use microcomputer based geologic workstation fulfills this need and allows the geologist to independently process geochemical data. Functions necessary for geochemical data processing are: 1)Digitizing; 2)Communications; 3)Data base management; 4)Statistical analysis; 5)Mapping analysis; and 6)General purpose applications (ie: word processing). A geologic workstation that can perform these tasks will yield significant advantages in processing and interpreting geochemical data.

The US Bureau of Mines developed hand-made, steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFC) blocks for building mine cribs. To ensure wider usage of these cribs, US Steel Mining Co. initiated a joint development and evaluation program with Burrell Construction Co. to mass produce SFC blocks of reasonable dimension, weight, and cost. Small specimens and full-size cribs were evaluated to determine their compressive strength and post failure characteristics. After testing and adjusting of various concrete mixtures, a final formulation was selected that gave a nominal crib strength of 22 MPa (3200 psi) and a nominal modulus of elasticity of 6.9 GPa (1.0 x 106 psi.) These SFC cribs can support 6.4 times as much as a wood crib with the same load-bearing area. The SFC crib was proven to be an economical and effective roof support system through various underground installations.

SCHEME DESIGN London’s Heathrow Airport, as the world’s busiest international airport, is missing one vital aspect - a dedicated rail link which connects directly to the city. All this is about to change with the construction of Heathrow Express - a fast, high quality rail service between the airport and the centre of London. It was recognised in the mid 1980s that if Heathrow was to accommodate the forecast growth in passenger numbers and the resulting increase in road traffic, a dedicated airport rail service would be vital. The main access into the centre of Heathrow is via a road tunnel with a direct link to the M4 motorway. The airport has introduced a number of traffic management schemes, but these can only achieve so much benefit. Growth in air passenger traffic is predicted to continue at an average of 4% per annum well into the next century and it was clear that significant investment was needed. Heathrow Express at a cost of over £350 million will provide this when it starts its service in June 1998. The business case for the scheme is based on a rider ship of around 15% of air passenger traffic. The initial Heathrow Express service will be based on four trains per hour, up to 8 car train lengths, providing a high speed non-stop service between the airport and central London in just 16 minutes. Initially a joint venture between the British Railways Board and Heathrow Airport, by mutual consent of the two parties, Heathrow Airport recently purchased the British Railways Board share making this one of the largest private sector rail projects currently under construction in the UK. Leaving Paddington, the main rail terminus in West London, Heathrow Express trains will travel 12 miles on the newly electrified line to airport junction, north of the airport. At this point they will leave the mainline to enter a 5 mile tunnel section that runs underneath the heart of the airport. The railway companies are responsible for track work, signalling and electrification of the 12 mile main line section including a grade separated junction over the main tracks for the Great Western Railway which links London and South Wales. "INTRODUCTION The Butte district of Montana is well-known as one of the biggest historic producers of copper in the world. It is also a classic example of a porphyry Cu-Mo system that has been overprinted by zoned, polymetallic (Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag) lode mineralization. After copper, silver was the next most important metal mined from Butte, with over 700 million ounces of total Ag production between 1880 and the present day. Although many papers have been written on the mineralogy of the early porphyry Cu-Mo mineralization and the high-grade Cu-rich lodes in the center of the district, relatively little information exists on the mineralogy of silver in Butte. The purpose of this paper is to summarize past and present silver production trends for the district, and to combine previously published work with new research to examine the mineralogy of silver in the Butte mining district. BUTTE HISTORIC SILVER PRODUCTION According to a recent USGS compilation1, Butte is one of the most Ag-rich porphyry deposits in the world, both in terms of average Ag grade (8.6 g/ton) and total production + reserves (Fig. 1). It is also the 2nd biggest Ag-producing mining district in the U.S. (after the Couer d’Alene district, Idaho). Annual silver and copper production data for the Butte district, compiled from various sources2,3,4, are summarized in Figure 2. Peak production of Ag and Cu was in 1917. While Ag production gradually declined in the ensuing decades, Cu production remained strong until the years leading up to the closure of the Berkeley Pit in 1982. In 1984, mining of the nearby Continental Pit resumed under a different operator, and continues to the present day. The Continental mine produced an average of 35,000 metric tons Cu and 575,000 oz Ag per year between 1984 and 20044. These figures do not take into account a period of mine closure in 2001-2003 due to an unexpected hike in utility prices. The long-term decline in Ag/Cu ratio of ore mined in Butte (Figure 3) is due to several factors, including: 1) changes in metal prices; 2) a downwards decrease in Ag/Cu ratio of most of the lodes with depth below surface; and 3) a shift in mining methods from selective underground mining of high-grade veins to open-pit mining of the bulk rock."

In many cases the roof strata of a bedded deposit may be considered as a composite of rock beams of rectangular cross section, whose component layers differ in thickness and may or may not be separable from each other when they are subjected to loading by their own weight. An analytical study of the behavior of such multiple-layer beams is extremely difficult owing to the heterogeneity and anisotropy of rock materials. The complexity is revealed by the fringe photographs obtained from several series of barodynamic photostress experiments conducted on various types of multiple-layer model beams of a medium-grained Bedford limestone. Further discussion on the applicability of barodynamic photostress techniques to the model study of the behavior of mine roofs in stratified geologic media is presented by comparing the phenomenological observations recorded in this investigation.

Numerous orphaned strip mines and old refuse piles scar the landscape, contributing to stream pollution and degradation of the natural environment. Field experiments to reclaim acidic surface-mined spoil and refuse banks with fly ash from bituminous coal-fired powerplants were conducted at several sites in West Virginia. Fly ash served as a neutralizing agent and soil amendment, permitting vegetation of waste lands and disposal of large quantities of ash. Reclamation of land by this method is estimated to cost about $300 per acre of leveled site, depending upon the topography of the land and quality and availability of the fly ash.

In an autogenous grinding circuit in which feed at approximately nine inches top size is reduced to a size suitable for subsequent processing, the build- up of a "critical size" fraction in the media causes problems. A "critical size" fraction has been defined as, "media too small to effect reduction by impact grinding of ore coarser than a quarter of an inch and too large to be broken by the largest size of media in the charge. 9, (1) The buildup of a "critical size" fraction reduces the capacity of the mill, increases the grinding power requirements per ton of finished product, and generally produces a finer grind than is desired. It is general practice to overcome this problem by the addition of large diameter steel balls to the grinding charge. This has certain disadvantages, such as; (i) an increase in mill liner wear; (ii) wear on the steel balls, and; (iii) some loss in flexibility in grinding circuit operations resulting from difficulties in removing the steel balls by means other than by grinding out.

Three dimensional surface approximations are important means of evaluating physical and environmental factors that affect surface coal mining and reclamation. Computer approximated surfaces are projected as an array of square grid cells where individual cells define each parameter value respective to locations on the grid. Grid surfaces or grid cells within a surface can be compared or modified through application of standard mathematical functions. Surface approximations can be used to define the quantity and quality of marketable coal and to evaluate thickness and quality of overburden. Surface approximations also can be used to evaluate overburden swell factors wherein changes in post-mine topographic relief are related to expansion of unconsolidated materials in the backfill. Application of computer approximated surface to analysis of approximate original contour (AOC) standards allows an assessment of the quantity and geographical displacement of overburden and the distribution and numerical level of slope.
