In recent years, much work has been done to explain the nature of the gold-carbon adsorption mechanism. The benefits of a sound theoretical basis has the obvious application to gold adsorption and elution industrial processes. Unfortunately, the lack of a clear agreement on the mechanism has provided no clear direction towards process innovation and optimization. Jones' (1989) work has gone a long way towards clarifying the specie of gold adsorbed (and thus the chemistry required to remove it). Since the development of hot caustic and cyanide elution, the kinetics have been accelerated by the application of pressure to increase elution temperatures beyond the boiling point at atmospheric pressure. However, the traditional reagent content of 15 g/L NaOH and 5-10g/L NaCN has remained largely unchanged. This is in spite of work that has shown that the presence of cyanide is not required for the elution process to take place (Adams, 1986; Adams; 1989; Jones, 1989). Adams (1989) has also compared NaOH elution rates with and without cyanide. He found improvement with the use of cyanide and a synergistic effect with the use of both. Others have found no difference in overall extraction (Jones, 1989

The method of coal pillar design involves primarily two aspects, the geometry of the pillar and the strength of the coal. However, the strength of the coal has to be emphasized with respect to the entire pillar dimension rather than isolated strength values of coal samples taken and measured from different locations. The presently applied pillar design systems do not specify clearly what the coal sample strength really represents. The intention of this paper is to introduce the concept of seam strength as opposed to the current practice of using coal strength as a prime design criteria in the formulation of pillar calculations. Seams are most of ten composed of multiple layers of coal, partings, and bone in different configurations, changing within the vertical section of the seam even in relatively close locations. The difference in strength between the weakest and strongest component of the coal seam could be as much as five times or more. An experimental approach based on multiple compressive tests performed on coal samples from the Coalburg and the Warfield seams from Eastern Kentucky was undertaken. The analysis of the results lead to the conclusion that for pillar calculations both the weighted mean of the seam strength and the strength of the weakest stratum should be considered rather than the relatively vague aspect of coal strength The design of pillar dimensions based on the above mentioned aspects should assure a more realistic design performance.

INTRODUCTION Phase I of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project, known as MOS-1 (Minimum Operable Segment-1), is the first phase of the 27 km± (17 mi) subway starter line. MOS-1 is currently under construction and involves approximately 6.4 km (4.4 mi) of subway, five stations, yards and shops routed through the downtown area of Los Angeles. The project will form the initial heavy rail backbone of a more extensive light and heavy rail transit system planned for the greater Los Angeles area in the future. Construction Contract A-171 is one of 4 tunnel contracts within MOS-1 and involves construction of twin tunnels running from the downtown metropolitan area west to MacArthur Park. The heavily populated and developed downtown area, potentially gassy ground conditions, and the possibility of undocumented abandoned oil wells in seismically active southern California made the design and construction of Contract A-171 a uniquely interesting project. This paper summarizes the construction history to date (December, 1988) including design geotechnical considerations, tunnel support design, as-built geologic conditions, shield tunneling performance through soft ground, and ground response. For new coal-fired power plants, federal regulations require that emissions of sulfur dioxide be limited to 1.2 pounds for every million BTU'S burned. This is equivalent to coal with a sulfur content of roughly 0.7 percent for Eastern bituminous coals and roughly 0.6 percent for Western sub-bituminous coals. The states and their political subdivisions are free to apply more stringent standards and to develop implementation plans covering existing and new units. Most Western-sub-bituminous coals contain less than 1% sulfur and hence their use, in many cases, will allow a utility to meet the regulations. However, there are problems in using such coals in furnaces designed for Eastern bituminous coals, and furthermore it will take many years to open mines and provide transportation facilities to utilities which are now burning coals with a higher sulfur content. Moreover, pending federal legislation would outlaw strip mining on land to which the federal government owns the mining rights. Those utilities who, for one reason or another, intend to continue burning Eastern bituminous coals with sulfur contents in excess of 1 percent are faced with removing SO2 from the stack gases. The alternative of utilizing coal gasification where the sulfur is removed prior to burning in a power plant is still in the early stages of development. Therefore, a large number of processes are under development for SO2 control.

"Fluorspar is one of the most important industrial minerals. It has a wide range of applications, for example it is used in the steel and aluminum industry, and is also the raw material to produce hydrofluoric acid, Teflon or Gore-Tex. There are only a few major fluorspar mines worldwide, with China being the most important fluorspar producer (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2017). At Okorusu, Namibia, fluorspar has been mined with conventional open pit mining methods from 1955 until 2014 from a large scale metasomatic fluorspar deposit with seven identified orebodies. There are about 7 million tons of measured resources left with an average grade of 27.5 % CaF2. This paper is based at an MSc thesis at Technical University Freiberg and describes the design of an underground mine for the A and D orebodies with an annual production rate of 100,000 t acid-grade fluorspar product. By comparing different mining methods and adapting variants of access to the underground orebodies the paper will emphasize on the selection of a suitable mining technology, with a special focus on the economic considerations to decide about the most profitable operation. INTRODUCTION Mining holds an important part in the economy of Namibia. In 2016 11.1 % of the GDP was made through mining activities with 22 active mines (The Chamber of Mines of Namibia, 2016). Only one of them consists an underground mining operation. The global annual production of fluorspar is approximately 6 to 7 million t (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2017). Okorusu produced on average about 50.000 t annually in recent years (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals In-formation Center, 2015). Okorusu Mine is Namibia’s only fluorspar mine. Fluorspar was mined in an open pit mine with four individual pits (A-D) since 1980. In 2014 the mine closed due to the increased stripping ratio and beneficiation problems. The mine assets were bought by Gecko Namibia. Currently Gecko uses parts of the processing plant for beneficiation of graphite from a neighboring mine. Figure 1 shows a panoramic view with the four pits and the mine village. The intent is to develop a concept for the further underground development of the mine. There are still about 7 million t of measured resources left in the deposit, with an average grade of 27.5 % CaF2. This study focusses on the underground mine design. The above-ground plant and facilities are considered as remaining unchanged."

The free-milling ore characteristics of the Fort Knox gold deposit are ideal for studying gold and silver behaviors in various processing circuits without serious interference of sulfide minerals and other refractory factors. A galvanic effect leads to faster silver dissolution than gold dissolution and, as a result, the Au/Ag solution concentration ratio increases through the leach circuit. In the CIP circuit, Au adsorption is more effective than Ag adsorption. The Au/Ag solution concentration ratio decreases from 10.0 to 1.0 as the slurry advances from CIP tank #1 to CIP tank #5, while Au/Ag ratio in the carbon increases from 3.2 to 15.3, as the carbon advances from CIP tank #5 to CIP tank #1. Silver is stripped more effectively than gold from the loaded carbon. The Au/Ag ratio in solution reaches 2.0 in the first 75,700 L of strip solution that pass through the loaded carbon; as the stripping process continues, the Au/Ag ratio in the strip solution increases. In the electrowinning circuit, the Au/Ag ratio in the spent electrowinning solution is significantly lower than that in the electrowinning feed, indicating that Au is more rapidly deposited onto the cathode than Ag.

INTRODUCTION The inherent errors of simple passive track detectors /SPTD/ used for estimation of exposure to the radon daughters /RnDP/ amount to about 30% /Do75/ while for active detectors only reach about 3 - 4% /Ph78, Du79/. The large error inherent in SPTD is the result of strong dependence of its calibration coefficient on the equilibrium Rn RnDP in the vicinity of detector /0r80/. Nevertheless the SPTD shows many advantages and seems to be very useful for to the estimation of individual exposure of miners to RnDP /Do81a/. For this reason the investigations are undertaken to improve SPTD so that it might provide information about the equilibrium Rn : RnDP during exposure. If the equilibrium would be known then one could use a suitable calibration coefficient yielding a better precision of the measurement. So far, some investigations of the improved type of SPTD have been conducted. One was based on the concept of using the so called diffusion barrier permitting to differentiate the tracks originating from Rn and RnDP /Fr77/. Such improved detector has been named a passive differentiating track detector /PDTD/. However, own investigations have shown /Do81b/ that this type of detector cannot provide precise informations about equilibrium Rn : RnDP. For this reason the investigations of the new idea of PDTD have been carried out. The new model presented below is based on the use of the absorbers of alpha particles. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The first variant of the concept is as follows: The differentiating detector consists of two portions of detective foil /track detector/ but only one is covered with an aluminium absorber. Thickness of the absorber is carefully selected so that only RaC' particles /7.7 MeV/ can pass the barrier. The second portion of the detective foil records all alpha particles originated from Rn and RnDP i.e. works like a SPTD. The scheme of such a detector, the so called two-fields passive differentiating track detector /PDTD-2/ is shown in the Fig. 1. It is possible to introduce a parameter that can characterize the equilibrium Rn RnDP, namely, the so called track density ratio /TDR/. All copper ore haulage at Isamine was transferred to the new 19 level haulage network by mid 1975. Previous experience together with design studies had indicated that a three train operation would be required to haul the scheduled ore production. The ore train with a gross weight of 600 tonne is made up of 15 bottom dumping trucks hauled by twin electric locomotives (Figure 1). Present train speeds reach 40 km/hr and, in the future, this speed could be increased to 55 km/hr. The planned operation on the restricted track network and the relatively high train speed meant that the train driver operated block light system would be inadequate on the grounds of haulage safety and meeting production targets. Some form of Centralised Train Control (CTC) system emerged as a necessity, and as an initial step, tenders were called for a relay control type CTC system. The high cost of these systems and the anticipated high maintenance costs and inflexibility of the offered systems led to the rejection of the tenders. It was decided to develop a CTC system locally and to use a digital computer to perform the basic track [ ] equipment interlocking tasks and monitor haulage operation.

Ore microscopy has been applied to the complex lead-zinc-copper-cobalt-nickel ores from the Madison Mire in the Fredericktown subdistrict of the Southeast Missouri Lead District to predict potential beneficiation problems. It has been found that in some portions of the ore deposits, textures are present which may result in metal losses. In ores from the Bonneterre Transition Zone the intimate association of siegenite with chalcopyrite may result in cobalt and nickel losses to the copper concentrate. In ores from higher stratigraphic horizons, this association is relatively uncommon, and siegenite is commonly associated with bravoite. This latter association will increase the recovery of the cobalt and nickel in bravoite, even though some of the fine-grained bravoite will not be recoverable. Other textures which may result in potential beneficiation problems include coatings of covellite on chalcopyrite and inclusions of sphalerite in galena.

This paper contains the geometallurgical studies, performed for Mineração Rio do Norte bauxites, applied to a selected area belonging to Plateau Saracá III, referring to an exploitation period of one year and three months, approximately. It is worth mentioning that Mineração Rio do Norte has the biggest bauxite operation in Brazil producing 8,500,000 tons of concentrate per year. The studies included wide investigations directed to the final objective of establishing a precise mining and production planning, based on the different behavior of the distinct bauxite ores, when submitted to industrial processes. Geometallurgy can be defined as the study of the regionalization (space distribution) of the metallurgical variables of a mineral deposit. This study involves and integrates all process engineering, geology, geostatistics and mining planning, among others. The development and application of the geometallugical studies to Mineração Rio do Norte were motivated by several reasons and necessities, among them: 1. Improving the forecast of the amount of concentrate (metallurgical mass yield) produced; 2. Improving the equipment operational efficiency, providing a more homogeneous feed; 3. Conducting a more precise material balance that permits a better daily, monthly and yearly production control; 4. Improving the forecasts for the final products generated by each ore type; 5. Obtaining better knowledge of the behavior of several ore types, submitted to the different process unit operations; 6. Promoting adequate ore blending, producing an homogeneous feed during mining operation.

"The flotation behaviors of diaspore and three kinds of silicate minerals - kaolinite, illite and pyrophyllite - using an organosilicon cationic surfactant as collector were investigated as functions of reagent concentration and pulp pH. The results show that the organosilicon cationic collector QAS122 is a suitable collector for the flotation of aluminosilicate minerals but has weak collecting ability with regard to diaspore, enabling the flotation separation of diaspore from silicate minerals using QAS122 as collector. The flotation of a bauxite ore was then studied in detail. Finally, a reverse flotation separation process was used to process a low-grade bauxite ore. It was concluded that use of the organosilicon cationic collector is effective. A concentrate with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) to silicon dioxide (SiO2) mass ratio, or A/S, of 9.67 was obtained from natural bauxite ore with A/S of 6.07 at pH of around 11. The Al2O3 recovery rate was 81.72 percent. IntroductionChina has abundant bauxite ore resources, but more than 98 percent of the bauxite ores are the diasporic type, with the characteristics of complex mineral composition, low aluminum oxide (Al2O3) to silicon dioxide (SiO2) mass ratio, or A/S, and difficulty of processing. The gangue minerals in bauxite ores are mainly kaolinite, pyrophyllite and illite, containing titanium and iron impurities (Zong et al., 2008). It is known that high-grade bauxite ore, with A/S greater than 8, can be processed directly by the Bayer process (Papanastassiou et al., 2002; Ma et al., 1996). However, Chinese diasporic ores have been processed mainly by the sintering process, which is environmentally damaging and energy intensive. Increasing the A/S of the diasporic ores using a flotation method is needed (Xia et al., 2010).Froth flotation is one of the most widely used processes to concentrate valuable minerals in beneficiation ores. It is particularly useful for separating finely ground ores from their associated gangue minerals. For diasporic bauxite ores, flotation is applied to obtain high-quality material for the Bayer process by increasing the A/S. Direct flotation has been shown to be an efficient method for the desilicating of diasporic bauxite ore (Wang et al., 2004; Xu et al., 2004), but reverse flotation has more advantages for this purpose, including less collector consumption, less foaming product and less effect on metallurgy (Liu et al., 2007; Hu et al., 2003; Hu, 2003; Luo et al., 2001)."

Many of the major copper ore bodies throughout the world contain chalcocite (79.9% Cu) as the principal copper mineral, yet the grades of copper concentrates produced from these ores rarely exceeds 25 to 28% Cu and in one known instance went as low as 13%. The low grade has traditionally been attributed to the presence of "activated pyrite" and/or chalcopyrite, and the universal approach has been excessive regrinding with all of its inherent effects-high capital, energy and maintenance costs, excessive sliming, and concentrate filtration difficulties (high moisture content). E. P. Cadwell, former Chief Metallurgist for American Cyanamid Company, did extensive microscopical studies on several of these types of concentrates from South American operations during the 1950's and discovered they all had one common feature--the pyrite particles in the concentrate were all rimmed with thin films of secondary chalcocite or covellite. As far as a flotation bubble or reagent is concerned, a rim of chalcocite is the same as a solid particle of chalcocite, and as long as a rim is present, the particle is going to float. Upon examination of these rimmed particles under the microscope, it becomes quite obvious why regrinding will never solve the problem and why maximum increases in grade by this technique rarely give improvements in grade of greater than 3 to 5% Cu.

Despite the importance of froth flotation to the mineral industries as a means of separating various minerals, the commercial flotation reagents used have varied little in the last twenty years. Numerous articles and books are available describing existing flotation chemistry and its application, e.g., Fuerstenau (1962), Fuerstenau (1976), Aplan (1980), Somasundaran (1980), King (1982), Leja (1982), Ackerman, et. al. (1984), Crozier (1984), Hansen and Klimpel (1985). There are many reasons for this lack of significant new reagent development including the general utility and relative cheapness of collectors, such as xanthates, and frothers, such as methyl isobutyl carbinol and the glycol ethers. Another important reason is the inherent complexity of the flotation process itself coupled with highly variable and difficult to standardize feed materials which make reliable reagent comparisons difficult and seriously limit the use of theoretically based studies to "predict" new or optimal reagents. In addition, the higher cost of "specialty flotation reagents demands that their performance attributes be significantly greater than existing general all- purpose commercial reagents – something often difficult to prove in practice. Faced with this situation, a detailed applications research pro- gram [Klimpel (1980 ab, 1982, 1984 ab), Klimpel, et. al. (1982)] was organized from 1979-1985 on mineral flotation with the following goals: 1) the development of appropriate batch laboratory flotation testing techniques sensitive enough and statistically reliable enough to identify small differences in performance between different flotation tests (i.e., between various reagents, even those with relatively minor chemical structural changes); 2) the identification of mathematical models with appropriate numbers and types of parameters that have maximum statistical power to statistically distinguish between various time-recovery profiles; 3) the generation of laboratory and corresponding plant scale data in sufficient quantity and consistency so that the highly interactive nature of the "flotation system9' of chemistry/ equipment/operating conditions could be quantified; and 4) the invention and development of really new and unique reagents for giving improved flotation performance. Caro's (peroxymonosulfuric) acid has been reported to destroy WAD (weakly acid dissociable) CN-but, until recently, the technology has not been demonstrated in other than a laboratory setting. During the last two years, Caro's acid has been shown to successfully detoxify WAD CN-in tailings at two large North American gold mines. Using on-site FMC generators, Caro's acid reduced the WAD CN-from 40-55 ppm to below 20-35 ppm WAD CN-, the target range for the two mines. The detoxification costs using Caro's acid were less than 50% of the treatment cost of using hydrogen peroxide, the previous oxidant of choice. In addition to the considerable savings in CN-detoxification costs, lower WAD CN-values were achieved and the detoxification time with Caro's acid was greatly reduced compared to hydrogen peroxide.

DOUG HALBE: Thanks, Terry. And in spite of your introductory comments, I'm going to attempt to continue our hallowed tradition of saying nice things about the speakers. This is really a serious comment now. We, as mineral processing and mill people, don't often talk to people outside our general operating area. One thing that we've tried to do in this operators' symposium is get speakers from various types of plant operations to help illustrate all the things we have in common. Our next speaker is from the industrial minerals area. I think there's a lot to be learned from industrial minerals operations. Some of the people in the last session learned some things about fine grinding in industrial mineral operations. I was a little surprised to see people there grind to 2 microns. Our next speaker is Frank Alsobrook. Frank is another nonmetallurgical engineer. He has a degree in geology, a master's of science from the University of Wisconsin. He's had his own very successful consulting company for a number of years. This is your 11th anniversary, Frank? Very good. He's also the immediate past chair of the industrial minerals division. I think the folks at the speakers' table should be ashamed. You have been so rowdy that Frank chose to sit in the audience. [laughter] We'd like you to come up now, Frank, and tell us some things that you've seen that might be useful to us. INTRODUCTION FRANK ALSOBROOK: The three topics addressed briefly are (1) teamwork and operations modeling, (2) the pitfalls of capital conservatism, and (3) the potential for by-product recovery. Ideas for improvements in these areas are not unique to industrial minerals but apply to metal mining and processing operations, as well. Several additional topics are suggested at the end of the paper.

Introduction An examination of statistics for the world phosphate fertilizer industry since 1980 reveals that there is an increasing tendency for fertilizer-manufacturing activity to concentrate in the areas of phosphate-rock mining. The economic justification for this resource-oriented strategy is clear. The choice between shipping phosphate rock, a comparatively low-value product, and shipping a more valuable finished fertilizer product will always, as long as cost considerations control the decision, be resolved in favor of the latter. The historical existence of substantial phosphate fertilizer-manufacturing capacity, which is oriented toward fertilizer-consuming activities and dependent on imported phosphate rock, shows that narrow cost considerations have not always determined the industry's location. One is entitled to ask what conditions have changed to precipitate the observed relocations, and how permanent are these changes. These questions are the subject of this investigation. Recent trends in world phosphate trade Since 1980, the changing pattern of world trade in phosphate materials reflects an increased interest in manufacturing phosphate fertilizer in rock-producing areas. This is shown by the decline in the total tonnage of phosphate rock being traded worldwide compared to world consumption of phosphate fertilizers (Fig. 1). This relative decline has continued since 1984, which is a longer period of time than could be explained by temporary cyclical market factors. Other evidence corroborates this conclusion. The world's phosphate-rock production is relatively concentrated geographically. In 1992, the top ten producing countries accounted for 92% of world production. Figure 2 shows that the share of world fertilizer production in the top ten rock producers has increased. Yet, further evidence of the direction of trade changes can be had by looking at the pattern of the world's sulfur trade. The first step in the manufacture of any of the widely used phosphate fertilizer products is the acidulation of phosphate rock with sulfuric acid. In most instances, phosphate fertilizer producers have found it economical to produce their own sulfuric acid by burning elemental sulfur, and such operations account for over 60% of all sulfur consumption in the world. 1 Therefore, a concentration of phosphate fertilizer production in rock-producing countries should produce a similar concentration of sulfur imports in the same countries. Figure 3 suggests that there has been a tendency since 1989 for sulfur exports to go increasingly to the rockproducing countries. World phosphate-location strategy is not limited to the alternatives of shipping rock and shipping finished fertilizers. A third alternative consists of producing phosphoric acid, the principal phosphate fertilizer intermediate, at the rock deposit, and then exporting it to market-oriented ammonium phosphate plants. This arrangement offers the importing country the advantages of shipping a more concentrated product while retaining the economic multiplier benefits of a domestic high-analysis fertilizer industry. India, and several other countries, imports merchant-grade phosphoric acid to use as input for the domestic value-added fertilizer industries. For various reasons, the trade in phosphoric acid has never quite lived up to the promise suggested by the foregoing discussion. Figure 4 shows no growth in this trade in the last ten years, either in absolute terms or in relation to the world's consumption of phosphoric acid. Most of the decline in the trade in phosphorous in rock form has been replaced with trade in finished fertilizers. The trade in superphosphoric acid was a growth activity in the late 1970s with the growth in US exports to the USSR, and this trade survived the Carter-era embargoes of US-Soviet trade. However, no additional sizable markets for superphosphoric acid developed, and other suppliers sought out the Soviet market. The problem with superphosphoric acid is that the cost of its incremental concentration is as great as the savings from shipping the more concentrated product. The Soviet market was a special case. The political breakup of the Soviet Union disrupted the superphosphoric acid trade after 1991 and led to a shutdown of the US export capacity.

Florida phosphates ore typically processed by reverse flotation with an intermediate acid-scrubbing step. A single-reagent flotation process, using fatty acids or amines as the collector, would eliminate the intermediate scrubbing step plus an additional flotation step. This would not only simplify the process flowsheet but would also result in reduced reagent costs. The potential of single-reagent flotation of Florida phosphates using fatty acids as the collector is examined in this study. Introduction The beneficiation scheme now used for Florida phosphates involves the following three steps (Smith, 1976: Lawyer et al.. 1978, 1984: Moudgil et al, 1976, 1979, 1986, 1987): •rougher flotation of fluorapatitc particles using a fatty acid-fuel oil mixture as the collector. •scrubbing of fatty acid, and •cleaner flotation of silica particles using amine collector. Several attempts have been made to simplify the process flowsheet by floating either apatite or silica (not both, as is the current practice). However, single-reagent flotation schemes have had limitations in meting the concentrate-grade requirements of the phosphoric acid plants. In this study, an attempt was made to use a minimal amount of the fatty acid-fuel oil collector to obtain an acceptable grade (rougher) concentrate. Invariably, the recovery in such cases is expected to be lower than in the conventional rougher-flotation step. Therefore, scavenger flotation of tailings with additional fatty-acid collector was conducted to improve the phosphate recoveries.

Because of the Chilean Ministry of Mining's interest in the development of industrial minerals, the Chilean Geological and Mining Service (Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería, SERNAGEOMIN) has carried out a research program during the last two years to identify projects that represent interesting investment opportunities for small- to medium-scale operations in Chile. Most important of these projects are: (1) Quebrada Lluta aluminum sulphate, for drinking- and industrial-water treatment, with a potential domestic and foreign mar- ket of almost 43,000 tonnes per year and investments of about US$1.8 million; (2) Quebrada Lluta-Quebrada Cardones pumice, for abrasives, filters, fillers, and light- weight aggregates, with a potential market of about 30,000 tonnes per year, and in- vestments of US$2.0 million; (3) El Maule dolomite, for soil conditioner and iron smelting, with a total potential domestic market of some 60,000 tonnes per year, and estimated investments of US$2.0 million; (4) Las Escaleras bentonite, for animal feed, pelletising, and oil absorbents, with a potential market of almost 6,000 tonnes per year, and investments of about US$2.4 million; (5) Laraquete-Carampangue andalucite, for alumina refractories, with a future total domestic and foreign demand of about 15,000 tonnes per year, and estimated investments of US$2-2.5 million; (6) Rio Lía garnet, for fillers and sand-blasting abrasives, whose domestic market represents 10,000 tonnes per year, with investments of US$2.3 million; and (7) Munilque pumice, for building bricks and panels, with a potential domestic market of 250,000 tonnes per year, and investments of US$1.4 million. The development of these projects will represent an important increase and a significant diversification in Chilean industrial-minerals production.

Phosphate mines in Florida are continuing to encounter higher dolomitic content host rock with the phosphate pebbles(1) necessitating a change in grinding conditions and/or circuits, One of these changes is to install hydrocyclones and close circuit the mill as opposed to the traditional open circuit grinding plant. Close circuiting of the grinding mill with hydrocyclones allows one to take advantage of reduced process mill power requirements by circulating the coarse mill discharge back into the mill for multiple chances of particle breakage. Additionally, as in this case, the hydrocyclones de-slime the pebbles, allowing for more efficient use of grinding power by reducing the amount of dolomitic material recycled to the mill.
