Mine-to-mill improvements can be initiated at any stage, but it is our assertion that drilling accuracy is a practical anchor in any operating mine or quarry for a structured continuous improvement process. This paper will: 1. Define deviations from plan and provide some best practices for maintaining drilling accuracy. 2. Introduce tools and methods to monitor and calculate consequences of accurate versus inaccurate drilling. 3. Demonstrate the use of these tools and methods and their impact on one cost item, the mitigation of oversized material by a hydraulic hammer. 4. Provide recommendations for implementing improvements.

Determination of the state of a mine fire is an important function during firefighting and during rescue and recovery operations. It is imperative that an accurate, up-to-date assessment of fire conditions be available for persons directing such activities in order to avoid unacceptable risk to mine rescue teas and/or fire fighters. Many indicators which consist of ratios of the concentrations of fire gases have been developed over the years for determining the state of a mine fire. Results from numerous gas sample analyses are necessary for determining the trend of the fire. Some indicators are preferred because the influence of sample dilution, a frequent problem, is said to be eliminated. Definitions and examples of indicator6 found to be useful in diagnosing recent western U. S. coal mine fires are presented. Mine gas explosibility is an important subject also requiring rapid assessment. Example explosibility calculations are presented applying one widely used method. Establishing limits for withdrawal of personnel are discussed.

Cluster analysis is used to design grade soft-sensors in a rougher flotation plant and a ball mill overload soft-sensor. Soft-sensors are virtual sensors which either replace unavailable actual sensors or infer measurements for non existing sensors. In the case of the grade soft-sensors clustering serves to determine clusters of related operating points. To each cluster there corresponds an ARMAX model structure whose parameters are estimated using only the points in the corresponding cluster. Thus a much better correlation is found than if all the data points were used for a global model. The problem of identifying clusters when the measurement of the real sensor is not available is addressed. In the case of the overload soft-sensor, variables were selected which are related to overload, either from a phenomenological point of view or according to operator experience. Different clusters are formed, some of which are identified as determining an overload condition or a possibility of such condition. Each of these clusters has a set of operating conditions which suggests the corrective action to be taken when necessary. Both kinds of soft-sensors are tested with industrial plant data and promising preliminary results are obtained.

Zeolites are crystalline, hydrated aluminosilicates of the alkali and alkaline-earth metals. Their crystalline framework is based on a three dimensional network of SiO4 tetrahedra with all four oxygens shared by adjacent tetrahedra. The alkali and alkaline-earth cations are loosely bound within this framework structure and may be exchanged, to varying degrees, with other cations or molecular water. Most zeolites can be reversibly dehydrated. At present, close to 40 natural zeolite minerals have been identified and over 100 zeolites have been synthesized. Zeolites are a family of hydrous aluminosilicate minerals whose physical properties provide unique features for a wide variety of practical applications. Zeolites have been known for more than 200 years, but it was not until the middle of this century that their economic potential and widespread occurrence in sedimentary rocks were known. Since 1950, literally thousands of articles and patents have appeared in technical literature, and commercial pro¬duction of natural zeolites may now exceed 1 Mt worldwide an¬nually. In the past 40 years, the zeolite mineral group has changed from that of a museum curiosity to one of an established industrial mineral commodity. According to Breck (1974), zeolites are characterized by the following properties: 1) High degree of hydration, 2) Low density and large void volume when dehydrated, 3) Stability of the crystal structure of many zeolites when dehydrated, 4) Cation exchange properties, 5) Uniform molecular-sized channels in the dehydrated crys¬tals, 6) Ability to adsorb gases and vapors, 7) Catalytic properties. All zeolites are molecular sieves, but not all molecular sieves are zeolites. Activated carbon, activated clays, alumina powder, and silica gels are also molecular sieves. Molecular sieves are materials that can selectively adsorb molecules on the basis of their size, shape, or electrical charge (Clifton, 1987). Commercial application of zeolites is based on the following physical properties: molecular sieving, ion exchange, adsorption, and catalysis. Potential commercial utilization includes hundreds of possible applications. The principal uses at this time, however, are as fol¬lows: -Ammonium-ion removal in waste stream treatment, sewage treat¬ment, pet litter, and aquaculture, -Odor control, -Heavy metal ion removal from nuclear, mine and industrial wastes, -Agricultural use, such as soil conditioner and animal feed supplement. An estimated 800 kt to 1 Mt of natural zeolites were produced and consumed worldwide in 1991. Eight small operators reported collective production and consumption of an estimated 18 kt of natural zeolites in the United States during 1991, mostly for feed additives and for odor control, aquacultural, agricultural, catalytic, and ion exchange applications (Eyde, 1992).

The U.S. Department of Energy is supporting the engineering development of three advanced physical coal cleaning technologies--selective agglomeration, advanced flotation, and advanced cycloning--capable of significantly reducing the pyritic-sulfur content of U. S. coals. The objective of this activity is to provide the coal production and electric-utility industries with a cost-effective option for addressing the SO2 emission reductions required by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. A secondary objective is to evaluate the potential of advanced coal cleaning for removing trace elements that are precursors to the formation of hazardous air pollutants. This paper will summarize the status of the three advanced physical coal cleaning engineering development projects.

Large mining-induced seismic events and their aftershocks cause hazardous working conditions, damage infrastructure, delay production and pose a risk to miners in the deep-level gold mines of South Africa. Stress changes affecting pre-existing zones of weakness are the main drivers of large mining-induced seismic events, which are often followed by aftershocks triggered by quasi-static stress transfer within the rockmass. A better understanding of seismic source mechanisms is important if the seismic data is to be used more effectively for mine planning and to reduce the rockburst risk. Four large seismic events (ML≥2.0) associated with the mining of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) at Kloof Gold Mine occurred on 13 June 2017. The events and their fore- and aftershocks were studied in detail to establish the circumstances and the cause of the incidents. The local magnitudes ranged from ML 2.3 to ML 3.0, the seismic moment from 0.69 to 2.25 x 1013 Nm and the source radius from 92 – 150 m. The main shocks were preceded by foreshock sequences, which were especially vigorous in the four hours before the main shock. Seismicity was recorded by in-mine arrays of three-component 4.5Hz geophones (detection threshold approx. ML -2.9). Following all four main seismic events, ML 2.3, ML 2.3, ML 2.9 and ML 3.0, the network detected a total number of 300 aftershocks ranging from ML -2.9 to ML 1.6 spread within a 1300 m radius from the centre of the seismic network. The statistical properties of the aftershocks were analysed using three scaling relationships: (i) Gutenberg–Richter frequency magnitude relationship; (ii) modified Omori’s law; and (iii) Båth’s law for the magnitude of the largest aftershock. The geological or mining feature that controlled the failure (e.g., fault, dyke, pillar, abutment) was determined by calculating the orientation of the nodal planes of the large seismic events using moment tensor analysis and studying the aftershock distributions.

Platinum electrodes are not inert as originally thought to be. The reactivity of platinum electrodes can explain their erratic behavior in many electrochemical measurements of metallurgical interest, e.g., in flotation systems, streaming potential measurements, contact-angle measurements, and in leaching systems. The anomalous behavior of platinum electrodes in redox potential measurements in aqueous systems was studied through Eh and pH measurements in water-oxygen, iron-water-oxygen and manganese-water-oxygen systems. Stability relations between Fe++ and Fe(OH)3 and between Fe(OH)2 and Fe(OH)3 were studied to judge the correspondence between experimental and theoretical equilibrium lines. The practicality of redox potential measurements in estimating ferric-ferrous ratios in aqueous systems was investigated along with their suitability as indicators in leaching operations, e.g., the removal of iron by aeration from manganese leach solutions.

Today's increasing needs for rapid excavation have stimulated efforts to break rocks without explosives. The application of electric energy for this purpose has been studied by a number of investigators. Following principles have been used in electrical rock breaking: 1. induction heating5 2. high frequency heating4, 14 3. microwave heating6 4. contact resistance heating9,12 5. resistance heating11,13 6. electron beam heating1, 3 7. plasma jet heating2, 8 8. arc heating7 9. condensor discharge energy14 In this paper the presentation of the principles of electrical fragmentation is limited to a process called "electrofracing". This technique uses electrical heating of rock by electrode contact resistance9 and resistance heating" phenomena. The electrically induced stresses inside of rock generate forces which break up the material. The fracturing of ore takes place by tensile stresses instead of compressive forces. The electric energy merely creates fractures in the rock and the separation of fractured material takes place by subsequent mechanical handling. Energy requirements in secondary breaking of iron ores have been about one to two kilowatt-hours per ton of ore. Power requirement is a function of the degree of fragmentation.

Sublevel stoping generally is a large-scale open stoping method. It sometimes is referred to as long-hole or blasthole stoping. This method usually is applied to strong ore bodies that require minimal support and are surrounded by strong country rock. The ore body should be fairly regular in shape and well-defined. The dip of the footwall normally should be sufficient to allow broken ore to gravitate freely, although the method has been adapted successfully to mine some of the flatter ore bodies. Sublevel stoping is not dependent on the width of the ore body. Widths of less than 6 m (20 ft), however, make the utilization of long-hole drilling techniques more difficult. The main criteria for sublevel open stoping are competent ore and stable host rock, regular ore boundaries, and a footwall dip that exceeds the angle of repose of broken ore. Basically, the method entails providing access to the ore body at various subintervals between the main haul- age levels in order to drill and blast the intervening ore. Stope drilling is carried out from drilling drifts on the sublevels, and the ore is blasted in slices towards an open face, which generally is vertical on the downholes and may be inclined towards the open face for the up holes. The blasted ore gravitates to the bottom of the stope and is collqcted through drawpoints. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical sublevel stoping mine. The method requires extensive ore body development with relatively high capital expenditures. How- ever, much of the development is in ore, and production costs are comparatively low. Productivity rates are in the 13.6 to 27.2 t (15 to 30 st)/manshift range. The drilling, blasting, and loading operations are performed independently, and equipment utilization is high. Large outputs can be obtained with few units and limited personnel. Dilution with waste rock may occur if ore boundaries are irregular or if caving occurs, but 100% of the ore within the stope usually is recovered. Pillar recovery sometimes is a problem. It is at this point that most of the waste dilution occurs. At the time data was gathered for this report (1973), the sublevel open stoping method was used by more than 21% of the metallic ore mines in the US (9 out of 42 mines producing 1088 + t/day (1200 + stpd) and provided more than 12% of the total metallic ore production from these mines. DEVELOPMENT Access to a sublevel open stope mine is gained by a slope or shaft that is normally sunk in the footwall of the ore zone, away from any possible effects from blasting or other production operations in the stoping process. Main level interval is selected and usually varies from 45.7 to 121.9 m (150 to 400 ft), depending on the vertical extent of the ore body, the number of drawpoints required to maintain output, and the eventual stope height. The main haulage drifts are located at the bottom of the stope horizon, either directly in ore or in the footwall, with access crosscuts at intervals. Raises are driven up through the ore to connect to the level above and provide access and ventilation to the sublevel drilling drifts, which are driven horizontally in the ore for the length of the stope. Depending on the drawpoint system to be used, the stope is either undercut by a raise-and-cone system, from a scram or slusher drift, or simply provided with a drilling drift from which access is made at intervals to the main haulage level. A raise driven either at the end or in the middle of the stope (if stope access is from both ends) provides a start for opening up a vertical slot across the stope to establish a free or open face for long-hole drilling and blasting. Sublevel stoping has proved to be a relatively safe and economical system.

The production sequence optimization of open pit mine is a procedure that reflects the exploitation conditions over life of mine. These conditions are determined by the geological characteristics of the deposit, requirements of the mining and processing technologies and economic parameters of the exploitation. From a technological point of view the production sequence optimization deals with two aspects - spatial and time. Each of them plays a tremendously important role in searching for the optimum solution of the problem. This paper treats the time aspect of the production sequence optimization. This aspect is revealed in the context of the problem of the working zone formation of the open pit mine in time. The problem formulation places an accent on the determination of the theoretically possible time distribution of the waste and ore quantities of each bench of the open pit mine. A mathematical solution to the problem has been developed based on combinatorial analysis. The solution provides a multi-variant investigation of the production sequencing with the use of an optimization model developed as a linear programming formulation. The model objective function uses the Net Present Value as a criterion for assessing the effectiveness of production sequencing. A case study is provided for the conditions of Assarel copper open pit mine (Bulgaria) to illustrate the applicability of the approach. The results obtained reveal the complex nature of the variation of the Net Present Value as a function of the mining factor.

Large scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogenous mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to take advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semi- autogenous mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4,476 kW (6,000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 mtpd (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and five variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.

A majority of the chemical process industry uses lime in either a powder or liquid form. Engineering and maintenance personnel often face a long and potentially expensive trial-and-error period in order to find the best process equipment to handle lime. Limestone is mined from a quarry in the form of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Then, it is crushed and fed into a kiln at approximately 1,093° C (2,000° F), where the carbon dioxide is burned off (calcining) to make calcium oxide (CaO).

Use of geostatistics to solve mining problems is gaining importance as the cost of developing new mines is increasing and there is a need to mine more marginal deposits. But, until recently, coal companies have shown little or no interest in geostatistics. However, the stringent quality controls on coal burning has led to a surge in interest in improved methods for estimating clean coal characteristics. Until now, most of the geostatistical applications have centered on the problems of estimating in-situ coal characteristics (Sabourin, 1975; Wood, 1976, 1979; Fang and Stark, 1976; Pauncz and Nixon, 1979; and Knudsen et al., 1980). Little work has been done in applying geostatistics to coal washability, except that by Armstrong (1980). Applying geostatistics to coal washability basically means the estimation of cleaned coal characteristics, with the aid of geostatistics. Cleaned coal estimation plays a very important role in overall emission control strategy, as can be seen by the general flow diagram of such a strategy shown in Figure 1. The scope of this paper is limited to one aspect of the overall emission control strategy shown in Figure 1; namely, the prediction of cleaned coal characteristics using geostatistics.

Mining activity in the Segovia region in NE Colombia is the main source of employment in the local economy. This has created major problems of illegality and informality mining associated with a high social and environmental impact, as inefficient technologies are used and high consumption of toxic substances required in the process of gold recovery by amalgamation and cyanidation. In this work is presented mineralogical characterization of six local mills and studied beneficiation processes developed in them. With the results presented a proposed plant design that eliminates the use of mercury by replacing gravity concentration processes taking advantage of the characteristics of the treated material. Significant results were obtained regarding the recovery of precious metals and present a methodology that can be replicated in other mineral beneficiation plants that use gold amalgamation processes. This implies a significant reduction in mercury use and decreased risk of human contamination associated with this.

The Mina Santa Rosa mine in Panama was the victim of a mine closure 24 years ago that left the community in dire straits. The mine showed the potential resources of greater than 1M ounces of gold and 4.5M ounces of silver. Veragold Mining Company decided to reopen the mine and address all the issues that were involved in the startup of an historic mine. This paper provides methods to restore the community trust, provide a transparent process, and develop an environmentally sound flowsheet. Immense scrutiny surrounded the Tailings Storage Facility, and the company developed a plan focused on paste thickening and surface stacking to eliminate the need for a conventional tailings’ facility. Paste thickener principles and benefits are also provided.

One of the rare consensual points among different resource-based economic analytical approaches refers to the strategic role of rent from mineral extraction, as a decisive tool to ensure that the temporary wealth generated in the present can turn into permanent income in the future. For this reason, evaluation, distribution and use of mining rent plays a central role in the sustainable development of mining cities. Brazilian legislation provides for this at the municipal level by means of participation in the financial results of mineral extraction accomplished in these municipalities, with the Financial Compensation for Mineral Exploration (CFEM). CFEM is a type of ad valorem royalty, which charges taxes of up to 3% of the net revenue of mineral production. However, legislation does not establish how these resources should be used. Therefore, there is wide variation in the use of CFEM income among Brazilian mining cities. A study from a sample of the 15 largest mining cities in eight Brazilian states made possible identification of two main patterns with regards to the use of CFEM which were labeled "sustained use" and " the pitfall of the single treasury." In that regard, this article discusses the pressuring factors that contribute to these patterns, as well as the institutional arrangements which may be more favorable to inducing more sustained use of CFEM.

The use of solid fuel in shaft furnaces to indurate iron ore pellets was originally considered a necessary evil, which the industry worked long and hard to eliminate. Since then changes have taken place in furnace design and operating practices that have led us to our suggestion that solid fuel additions could again be used. In essence, what has happened is that the developments which made it possible to operate without solid fuel have also created new operating conditions favorable to the effective use of solid fuel. Because these new conditions* were brought about in part by the desire to eliminate solid fuel and because the development was a gradual one, the industry failed to reassess its position and for years neglected the possibility of returning to solid fuel.

This paper describes the ventilation planning that was per- formed at the Barrick Gold Corporation, El lndio Mine. The El lndio Mine is located at an elevation of approximately 4,000 m in the Andes mountains east of the coastal city of La Serena, Chile. The ventilation planning program consisted of a detailed ventilation survey of the mine and the establishment of a correlated com- puter model. A series of network simulations were conducted to determine the optimum position, size, and configuration of new ventilation raises and main fan exhaust system. Modifications to existing mine infrastructure including; driving of drifts, slashing of airways, and positioning of ventilation controls were examined. Detailed costing information was developed to optimize the location of the new main exhaust raises and fan system. The final ventilation system is expected to increase the mine airflow from the existing 157 m=/s to over 315 mls. This increase was necessary to accommodate an expansion in mine production, diesel equipment utilization, and deeper mine development. Furthermore, the increased airflow was required because of the de-rating of diesel equipment and large air volumes necessary to dilute diesel exhaust at high elevation.

INTRODUCTION Jack Spalding in Deep Mining, Chapter 3, states: "In deep mining, to start stoping an orebody without a definite plan of operations covering the whole extraction from beginning to end is to invite serious trouble. Any stoping without plan is bound to leave, toward the end, a number of pillars, remnants, or promontories, which, as they are reduced in size, are liable to fail and cause a general collapse. The object of stope planning is so to mine an orebody that at no stage in the operation is a remnant left. Definition: `When a block of ore is stoped in such a way that eventually a small piece is left entirely surrounded by stoping, that piece is termed an island remnant.' The design of and adherence to a plan of stoping is of greater importance in preventing rock bursts than the type of ground control adopted." This, of course, is just an example of the old axiom that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And in this context, mining does not have to be very deep before poor ground conditions, made worse by lack of good planning, force a mining company to resort to more expensive methods of ore recovery. At all times when rock pressures become excessive, stoping plans must be devised to avoid the creation of pillars or promontories. This is most readily recognized when mining deep narrow ore veins by open methods. It would be a little more general to say that stoping systems should seek to avoid or minimize localized concentrations of rock stress. Ore bodies, and particularly those at Falcon¬bridge, can reach large widths and leaving pillars for extraction at a later time cannot be avoided. However, good planning can reduce the effect of factors which create bad ground conditions. The necessary ingredients of planning are time and information: time to formulate and revise ideas; information, gained in exploration and early development, to provide the fullest knowledge of the ore body. In this way, plans become meaningful. It must always be kept in mind that the long-term results of good planning often require decisions not compatible with reaching earliest full production. PLANNING FOR DEEP MINING At Falconbridge Nickel Mines ore bodies presently being found and prepared for production lie at depths in excess of 610 m (2000 ft) below surface. Current un¬derground exploration is being directed towards favor¬able locations below 914.4 and 1219.2-m (3000 and 4000-ft) depths, at most mines. The Onaping Deep ore body has been traced to a depth of 1508.8 m (4950 ft) and at Falconbridge mine the ore body is under develop¬ment below the 5000 level. Planning for more efficient ground control has therefore become an important con¬sideration of future mining. HYDRAULIC BACK FILLING AND CUT-AND-FILL STOPING The advent of hydraulic back filling has led to the increasing use of flat-back cut-and-fill stoping methods during the last ten years, until it has probably become the commonest method of mining deep ore deposits in Canada. These methods account for almost all the pro¬duction from Falconbridge Mines at this time. The ad¬vantages claimed are: safety-a minimum of open ground; very little supplementary ground support (except rockbolted backs and walls); greater selectivity and flexibility in extraction (horizontal extension of the vein, high grade ore stringers going out into the walls); and high productivity and increased mechanization in larger ore widths. There is some difference of opinion as to whether hydraulic classified tailing back fill provides any great resistance to initial closure of the stope walls. The evi¬dence available suggests that it does not. Addition of portland cement to the back fill just prior to placement has produced a material having the properties of a weak concrete. It is confidently expected that this material will assist greatly in the efficient mining of pillars and generally in giving increased ground support to oppose closure. PRINCIPLES OF STOPE PLANNING BY LONGITUDINAL FLAT-BACK CUT-AND-FILL Again quoting from Spalding: "The practice of con¬trolling output by stopping and starting stopes is bad¬stopes once started should proceed without interruption, and control must therefore be obtained by altering the rate of stoping. It is therefore necessary that faces should normally advance at a medium rate which can be boosted, if required, to give temporarily a greater output. Modern high productivity stoping methods, however, generally aim to achieve and maintain the maximum output possible from a stope. Control of tonnage and grade, therefore, becomes a more complex problem requiring very careful scheduling and organiza¬tion. With the basic method of flat-back overhand stoping using hydraulic fill, it is not usually possible to mine in such a way as to avoid creating pillars." Consider an ore body as illustrated in Fig. 1. It is 274.3 m (900 ft) high by 228.6 m (750 ft) long on strike and averages 4.6 m (15 ft) in ore width. It rep¬resents approximately 907 000 t (1,000,000 st). The ore body could be mined by advancing one long single face through all the levels from bottom to top. A total face length of 228.6 m (750 ft) would accommo¬date five 45.7-m (150-ft) stopes. See Fig. la. Each of these stopes would produce approximately 1814 t/m (2000 stpm) and the ore body would require a period of ten years for complete extraction. A possible im¬provement to this scheme might be to stagger the indi¬vidual stope faces. See Fig. 1b. Problems of hanging wall failure can be reduced by this arrangement. From the point of view of reducing travelway maintenance, it is good practice to employ a stoping system of retreat. A geometallurgical testing program was developed to anticipate ore behavior in the beneficiation plant and support production planning. Over 100 drill core samples from a major iron ore deposit were tested using bench-scale gravity and magnetic separation methods to assess variability in process responses. Results showed significant differences in key attributes such as iron grade, gangue content, slimes generation, and specific gravity, directly impacting concentrate grade, recoveries, and tailings quality. Correlation analysis and regression models were used to link feed properties to process outcomes, and a mass recovery estimation equation (Wrec) was developed for predictive use. The study proposes the integration of geometallurgical parameters—such as Fe, SiO2, Al2O3, LOI, ore type, size fractions, and slimes content—into the block model to support blending decisions and minimize operational risks. This work establishes a solid foundation for long-term mine-to-plant integration, with future phases aiming to expand testing and build a calibrated geometallurgical model.
