One of the first activities after returning to the Moon will be finding sources of water and materials for the construction of human settlements and other infrastructure. There is evidence of the existence of deposits in the bottom of craters at the South Polar region and in flat areas around. Based on geological data from the Moon, a block model representing a deposit or icy regolith has been defined in the vicinities of Shackleton Crater, with unique characteristics of shape, thickness, and water contents. A mine plan utilizing surface mine modeling software for ore extraction from an open pit- type of excavation to a delivery point near a water processing facility is proposed, with monthly, quarterly, and yearly schedules. Production results, dashboard charts and progress of the topographic changes are also presented.

A unique type of grinding mill liner has been developed by Waagner-Biro A.G. of Austria. This liner system, termed an angular spiral lining (.ESL), was, successfully tested by Magma Copper Company's San Manuel concentrator in both their 10 Ft x 10 Ft (3.05m x 3.05m) and 12 Ft, 6 In x 14 Ft (3.81m x 4.27m) grate discharge wet grinding ball mills. Magma Copper's savings in power and grinding balls justified conversion of more than half of their twenty-six ball mills to the ESL system.1,2 The ASL system was provided by the Capitol Castings Division of Midland Ross Corporation, the exclusive licensee for such conversions. Capitol Castings proposed the following as expected benefits from installation of an ASL system in an 18 Ft x 21 Ft (5.49m x 6.40m) overflow discharge wet grinding ball mill at the Pinto Valley Operation of Cities Service Company: "(a) Reduction of power consumption per ton of ore milled = 12%, (b) Increased throughput = 6%, (c) Reduction of ball consumption = 6%."

A micro-scale investigation was carried out by applying an atomic force microscope (AFM) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy to study in situ the adsorption of three different collectors — oleic acid, octanohydroxamic acid (HA) and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA) — on bastnaesite in aqueous solutions. The results show that all three collectors adsorb on bastnaesite. The hydroxamic acid collectors — HA and SHA — adsorb on bastnaesite mainly in the form of insoluble metal hydroxamate. Their specific adsorption mechanism indicates that high selectivity will be achieved with a hydroxamic acid collector for the flotation of bastnaesite.

RADON EXPOSURE AND CARCINOGENIC CELL TRANSFORMATION The highest radiation burden to miners is due to inhalation of radon and its short-lived decay products. The quantification of the risk associated with this radiation burden is complicated by modeldependent lung dosimetry, insufficient accuracy of past human exposure data as well as lacking knowledge about potential synergism of various carcinogens. Nevertheless, it is evident from epidemiological studies of miners that inhalation of elevated levels of radon daughters is correlated with increased lung cancer incidence (UNSCEAR, 1977). The situation is further complicated by the lack of reliable data on the biological variability of the latency period for the development of lung tumor under varying exposure conditions. At present information on variation with age is scarce, however, it is indicated that the excess lung cancer rate for workers exposed to high radon levels is considerably higher, if exposure occurs at ages over 40 years as compared to under 30 years of age (Sevc, Kunz, Placek, 1976). Furthermore, latency period is shorter by 6 - 7 years for smokers exposed to elevated radon levels than for non-smokers (Fry, 1976). Analysis of US- and CSR-uranium miner data revealed that the mean latency period is in the order of about 15 years (Jacobi, 1973). These uncertainties, together with medical diagnostic shortcomings, lead to the dissatisfying situation that at present the detection of radon induced injury of mining personal is primarily the assessment of the endpoint, i.e. radiation induced cancerous transformation of lung cells with typically less than 10% chance for recovery. Therefore it would be advantageous to develop practically applicable diagnostic aids to indicate already early precancerogenic changes of cell characteristics. This would permit the identification of specific population groups at increased risk for the development of lung cancer, thereby increasing the chances of more successful medical treatment. Despite continuous improvements in the reliability of test methods for the diagnosis of cancer cells there is still need for techniques, which enable the detection of transformed cells before the onset of invasion of the host organism. It is generally recognized that the transformation of a cell into a malignant state leads to a change of the cell surface, indicating a correlation between membrane-specific immunological properties and loss of growth control. Surface alterations on cells appear to be responsible in part for the malignant state and are not simply secondary effects of the transformation (Schnebli and Burger, 1973). Furthermore, membranes of cancer cells differ significantly from those of normal cells, particularly, in permeability properties (Rastogi, 1976). In dying cells, proteins, glycoproteins, peptides, aminoacids and their breakdown products are released, which block the permeation of the membrane itself. A mammalian cell can be considered as a 3-phase system (interior, boundary, environment) with the membrane forming a heterogeneous barrier between two subsystems. Under normal circumstances a difference of chemical potential is maintained on both sides of the membrane, causing an ion gradient across and fixed surface charges on the membrane. This results in a membrane resting potential (MRP) between cytoplasm and the bulk medium. It has been shown that MRP is a highly sensitive indicator for cellular reactions due to physical, chemical and biological agents, particularly whenever phenomena of transport and ion gradients as well as permeability are involved (Redmann, 1980). The primary interaction of the agent "ionizing radiation" with any form of living matter occurs at the cellular level. The component with the highest hit probability is the cell membrane. In the study presented MRP-changes of human cells were investigated with simultaneous measurements during irradiation and post-irradiation intervals up to six days. Furthermore, the suitability of MRP-measurements of human cells was tested as an indicator for early changes of cellular properties prior to the histological confirmation of carcinogenic transformation. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Lung cells The biological specimen used were cultured human lung cells and human lung biopsy samples. Monolayers of lung fibroblasts (W138) were grown in petridishes using conventional culture techniques. In addition, transformed lung cells (W138SV13, subline 2RA) were used applying similar culture methods. All petridishes were incubated at 37°C and only cells in logarithmic growth phase were used. Freshly excised lung biopsy samples were obtained from randomly selected male and female patients (20 cases), where suspected or unclear malignancies were indicated by clinical or X-ray observations. At the time of sampling 80 % of the patients were or had been smokers in the past. The samples were taken by means of a stiff bronchoscope introduced into the trachea under local anasthesia with 1 % Novesinsolution (preparation with Atropin and Pantopen). This permitted the observation of both main bronchi down to the segmental bronchials. From each patient two tissue samples were excised from the mucusepithelial layer under visual control with fiber optics and transferred immediately into 1 % NaClsolution. "The Copper Mountain Mine is located in Princeton British Columbia, Canada and produces 80 – 90 million pounds of copper annually, as well as gold and silver by-products. The ore processing plant has a conventional SAG/ball mill circuit with inline pebble crushing, followed by flotation. At most plants, much time is spent evaluating and optimizing the comminution and flotation circuits. The cyclones are a key contributor to the effective operation of the plant: They define the circulating load in the comminution circuit and provide the classification that ensures liberated material is passed through to flotation. If the cyclones are not performing as they should, the results are often a combination of lost recovery, grade, capacity and reduced throughput in flotation. For such an impactful unit operation, cyclones have historically been under-instrumented. Consider as well that the cyclones are typically located at the highest elevation in a plant, and it becomes clear why they often underperform. Copper Mountain Mine recognized the critical role that cyclones filled in their plant and worked to optimize their operation through the implementation of a Portage Cyclone Detection (PCD) system to identify plugging and roping incidents, Portage Pumpbox Control (PPC) to manage the flow to the cyclones, and AwaRE to control the grinding circuit. As a result, cyclones overflow stability has increased, switching out a roped or plugged cyclone now happens within seconds rather than many minutes, and both the grinding and flotation circuits perform better. INTRODUCTION Cyclones are one of the most extensively used pieces of equipment within the mineral processing industry because of their simplistic operating and maintenance philosophies. The cyclones are commonly used as classifiers within the comminution circuit to control the grinding product particle size for satisfactory performance of downstream operations. The cyclones are a key contributor to the effective operation of the plant and have a significant impact on the mineral processing plant operations. If the cyclones are not performing as they should, the results are often a combination of lost recovery, grade, capacity and reduced throughput. Similarly, an inefficient cyclone operation may also lead to low or high recirculating loads that impact the efficiency of the comminution circuit. This highlights the importance to have proper stability in cyclone operation while implementing any plant-wide optimisation strategy."

"INTRODUCTION Of all the natural resources being taxed by the needs of the modern world, perhaps the most important is the continually expanding demand for water resources. As water becomes scarcer, and increasingly important, new technologies are needed to find innovative ways to preserve this precious resource. In Chile, for example, the mining industry is investing billions of dollars to build desalination plants and pipelines; bringing ocean water as far as 200 kilometers inland to meet their demand and maintain operations. It is a full-blown crisis for that nation and a top priority for their government and economy. It has been reported that world water consumption will increase by 40 percent in the next 10 years, representing nearly exponential growth. In the U.S., as more and more communities continue to be built, more drain on the current water infrastructure is created. For 25 percent of people and operations that rely on water from aquifers, this source is being consumed at a rate that will create significant problems meeting the demand in as few as two generations.1 A PROACTIVE APPROACH When it comes to controlling dust at your operation, whether a landfill, a transfer station, a haul road or another ancillary area, what are the options? We know watering is not the answer, but at the same time, we need to prevent dust from flying to ensure a safe environment and keep our skies clear of pollution, for both regulatory requirements and neighbors. Creating a Dust Mitigation Program instead of looking to buy the first dust control product off the shelf is a first step to conserve water and, at the same time, maintain the operational demands and environmental standards for a given site. The program concept is straightforward enough. However, the process of effectively constructing and executing a program is quite involved. When undertaking a program, each manager needs to work with their team and their partners/vendors in analyzing the following elements: 1. Site Expectations—It is important to understand how to balance your internal standards with your regulatory requirements, as well as how to keep your neighbors satisfied. 2. Site Aggregate—Variations in native soil, such as clay content or gravel levels, greatly affect the approach that will yield the highest results. 3. Climate—Relative humidity and seasonal variations are critical to achieving predictable results through product choice, application frequency and timing. 4. Daily Traffic—The type and frequency of traffic is an essential variable for site management. 5. Environmental Responsibilities—If you have additional, specifically defined responsibilities, the approach to your site may vary. 6. Budget—While efficiency is the goal of any program, some sites will have more stringent restrictions than others. 7. Current Usage Rates—Document and understand where you’re starting from, both with water, supporting products, and maintenance so that effective measurement of results is possible."

This paper addresses two issues affecting the international ferrochromium market as they pertain to the changing pattern of U. S. chromium import dependency. These issues are 1) the long-term ferrochromium production cost differential between the United States and the Republic of South Africa and 2) the ability of Zimbabwe to expand ferrochromium production and exportation. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines Minerals availability Program appraisal that evaluated the international availability of chromium in the form of chromite and ferrochromium from 10 market economy countries. South African ferrochromium producers are shown to have a long-term production cost advantage over U.S. producers of $0.03 to $0.04 per pound of contained chromium, in 1981 dollars. Zimbabwean ferrochromium production and exportation are expected to increase in the future. Major expansions of production capacity will be dependent upon alleviating potentially serious constraints in electric power, rail, and port facilities. In the long term, ferrochromium production costs in Zimbabwe are expected to increase faster than the rate of inflation, because as chromite mining from the podiform resources in Zimbabwe decreases, production from the Great Dyke resources will increase.

INTRODUCTION The utilization of longwall mining technology in the United States has steadily increased since the first longwall plow system was installed in 1952. At the errs of FY 1992, some 76 coal mines were employing longwall mining systems for coal extraction, and approximately 78 shearer and 3 plow faces are operating nationwide at any given time. Although the number of operating longwalls has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have increased significantly during this period. During the same timeframe, the number of continuous miner sections has decreased by 13 pct., from approximately 1438 in FY 1988 to less than 1250 in FY 1992. According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data, the average production of longwall sections increased from approximately 2400 tons per shift (tps) in FY 1988 to more than 3100 tps FY 1992. In fact, the average production has more than tripled since 1978, when it was only 850 tps. Approximately 25 pct. of operating longwalls are capable of producing in excess of 4000 tps. Longwall production currently accounts for nearly 36 percent of U.S. underground coal production, compared to 4 pct. in 1978. These improvements are attributed to improved longwall equipment and increased availability, larger longwall panels and automation. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust compliance problems more frequently than other mining system. Although dust levels have remained relatively unchanged over the past five years, averaging 1.6 mg/m3 and 1.9 mg/m3 based on results of operator and inspector sampling, respectively, during FY 1992, approximately 25 pct. of the operating longwalls were in noncompliance during any given bimonthly sampling cycle. Although modest gains in longwall dust control technology have been made, these have been overshadowed by significant increases in production rates. As more coal is mined, more dust is generated (Figure 1). Therefore, the increase in longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced which must be controlled. [ ] In view of the current compliance record, any efforts to further increase longwall output, as has been forecasted, must be accompanied by: (1) the reduction of dust levels at existing operations through the proper installation and maintenance of suitable engineering dust controls; and (2) the advancement of dust control technology for today's and future longwalls that will enable all face personnel o work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of respirable coal mine dust. MSHA'S RESPIRABLE DUST CONTROL PROGRAM Since 1972, federal regulations have required each coal mine operator to continuously maintain the average concentration of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere during each shift in the active workings at or below 2.0 mg/m3 through the application of environmental dust control methods. "On April 4, 2017, the largest earth-pressure-balance tunnel boring machine (TBM) ever built finally completed its 2.7-km (1.7-mile) journey beneath Seattle, WA, nearly four years after it began boring the SR-99 tunnel that will eventually replace Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct.By now, readers of this publication are familiar with the ordeal that began on Dec. 6, 2016, when the machine overheated and shut down. Until that point, the TBM, named Bertha, had grabbed headlines for being the largest in the world with a 17-m (57.6-ft) diameter face. But after the incident that stopped the progress, the headlines suddenly stopped focusing on the engineering marvel of the tunnel project and began asking what went wrong. Just 300 m (1,000 ft) into the tunneling journey the machine was stuck, unable to move forward and impossible to retract.The project’s contractors, Seattle Tunnel Partners,(STP JV) – a design-build consortium comprised of Dragados - USA, Tutor Perini, say a 20-cm (8-in.) steel well-casing buried in the path of the machine caused the problems that halted the TBM. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) disagrees, and the issue over who ultimately pays for the repairs is now with the courts.Eventually, engineers determined the best way to get Bertha back to work was to dig a 36-m (120-ft), deep concrete lined shaft pit in front of the machine and lift the 1.8-kt (2,000-st) cutterhead out for repairs. The repairs took two years but eventually the machine resumed mining in January 2016. In April 2017, the TBM finished building the tunnel, breaking through at the tunnel’s north end near Seattle’s Space Needle, with little to no ground surface movement measured on the entire alignment.While the cause of the TBM breakdown and who should pay for repairs was debated above ground, the work below ground continued. David Sowers, deputy program administrator, engineering and program management with WSDOT, told Mining Engineering during the 2017 Cutting Edge Conference in Seattle that in addition to the technical marvel that the tunnel became, the fact the parties involved were able to work through the unprecedented challenge is a great example of how to overcome challenges on massive projects."

The impact of longwall mining on the local hydrological regime has become an important environmental focal point. Unfortunately, only a few studies have addressed the timing and range of well fluid level fluctuations and the associated ground movement. Furthermore, even fewer studies have determined the influence of longwall mining on water quality. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is providing insight into this environmental concern through a program of field case studies. One such study was conducted in Cambria County, PA where five observation water wells were drilled above two adjacent longwall panels. In this study, three wells were completed as nested piezometers and the remaining two served as producing wells. The piezometers were positioned along a line oriented subparallel to the longwall face and were located at the centerline of each panel and over the intervening chain pillars. The piezometers were designed to monitor fluid level fluctuations in both shallow and deep water-bearing zones. Slug tests were conducted before and after mining to characterize changes in hydraulic conductivity of the respective water-bearing zones. Pressure transducers and data loggers were installed to provide continuous fluid level fluctuation data as mining developed through the study area. The producing wells were drilled to provide water quality information. One well was located directly above the centerline of a panel and the other was positioned over the panel's set-up rooms. The wells were designed to simulate domestic use and were produced daily, for four hour intervals, throughout the study. Samples of the produced water were collected before and after mining progressed through the area. In addition, an array of monuments was installed near the study wells and was periodically surveyed to characterize mining-induced surface deformations. This study shows that: a) the observed changes in ground water chemistry did not affect the potability of the water; b) short-term major water level fluctuations occur at the approximate time of undermining; and c) water level recovery begins before the process of subsidence is complete.

La Espingarda kaolin deposit was formed by ?in situ? alteration of volcaniclastic rhyolitic rocks belonging to Jurassic Marifil Formation. Three volcanic lithofacies were identified: porphyric biotitic ignimbrites (PBI), a coarse lithic ignimbrite (ILG), a fluidal intrusive rhyolite (RFI), all kaolinized in different degrees. The alteration covers an ellipsoidal area of ~20,000 m2, with its alteration decreasing downwards and disappearing at 8-12 m from the surface. The length to thickness ratio of alteration is 60:1. An erratic silicification was found as small zones (<3 m2) of quartz stockwork. The mineralogy is kaolinite + quartz + feldspars + Fe-oxyhydroxides ± halloysite ± illite and interstratified I/S, although the relative proportions change in each rock type. Due to coarse grain size and high quartz content, natural kaolin is unsuitable for slip cast ceramics, unless beneficiated. Washed ILG kaolin has the best rheological properties and behavior in casting and drying for its mineralogy, particle size distribution, thin texture and surface activity, as well as a certain fusibility and firing kinetics. PBI and RFI kaolins, due to finer texture, smaller grain size, lower surface activity, and higher halloysite amount, have worse slip viscosity and thixotropy that are due also to soluble salts. For the same reason, they have good casting and drying properties, but their purity brings about higher softening temperatures and water absorption. Several parameters are used to discriminate between hypogene or supergene kaolinite genesis. The hydrothermal genesis is mainly sustained by fluid inclusion temperature (150-180ºC) in quartz veinlets, while weathering is supported by deposit morphology, simple mineralogy, kaolinite stable isotopes (d18O ? 18, 13; dD ? ?59; ?85) and paleoclimatic record. It is concluded that a weathering process formed the main alteration with some participation of steam-heated meteoric waters. Neither the contents of Au, Ag, As, Sb, Hg, nor drill data support the existence of any epithermal gold mineralization at the kaolinite bottom.

"The undertakings described in the paper titled “Study on correlation of quantified coal rank with self-heating temperature” by Wang and Luo in the November 2015 issue of Mining Engineering (Wang and Luo, 2015) are mathematically sustainable and an acceptable extension of work performed by Smith and Lazzara (1987) for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The paper is not an accurate explanation of the currently accepted leading practice for determining the propensity of a coal seam for spontaneous combustion. The paper could lead a practitioner to an oversimplified conclusion on how to determine the propensity of a coal seam to spontaneously combust.The spontaneous combustion of coal is a complex and not fully understood reaction. What is understood is that many more factors other than selfheating temperature (SHT) and coal rank are required to sufficiently evaluate the risk of spontaneous combustion in a particular coal seam. A superficial assessment can lead to an improper response to the risk. Some statements on the next steps through an appropriate literature search would have made the authors’ conclusions more credible.The SponCom 2.0 software, updated by the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) in 2011, provides a path for evaluating the susceptibility of a coal seam to spontaneous combustion. In addition to proximate and ultimate analyses to establish coal rank, and therefore an estimate of SHT, the program includes the history of heatings, friability, seam thickness, overburden thickness, rider seam presence, pyrite presence, face and butt cleat densities, geothermal source presence and other geological features in the assessment. Mining conditions including floor heave, rib sloughage and rate of advance are also assessed to conclude a propensity for spontaneous combustion."

Although the economic importance of recovering copper by leaching of mine work dumps from open-pit operations has been realized for some time, serious attempts to understand and to improve such operations through scientific research has been made only in recent years. This progress report covers the results of chemical, physical, and biological studies pertaining to the dump leaching process and discusses salient features and parameters that may be helpful in improving such operations.

Hydrocyclone separators are some of the most widely used instruments in a variety of industrial applications. Their major functions are to sort, classify and separate solid particles and liquid droplets within a multiphase flow system. Research studies employing both experimental and numerical methods recognize that the performance of a cyclone is related to its geometric dimensions as well as the inner flow pattern. Although many successes have been achieved over the past years, the majority of investigations only focused on the simplified design of cyclone geometry and on single-phase flow. Therefore, this study set out to investigate the flow field in a new-design hydrocyclone and used particle image velocimetry (PIV) to explore the complex swirling flow behavior inside the cyclone within an air core. The flow field inside the cyclone was also studied by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation using a commercial CFD package. Different turbulent models were tested in this study with a moderate-size mesh, and the interface of liquid phase and air phase was predicted by the volume of fluid (VOF) model.

SUMMARY In August 1986, TRANSMANCHE LINK, a joint venture comprising the 10 companies who initially promoted the project, signed a contract with EUROTUNNEL for the design, construction and commissioning of the TRANSMANCHE fixed link for an amount of 4,5 billion dollars. On the French side, the work consists of digging three, 19km. long tunnels, of which almost 16 kms. are under the sea, up to the meeting point with the Tunnel works carried out by the British.. The tunnels are bored through chalk by 5 tunnelling machines, starting from one intermediate point at Sangatte near the coast: - Landward, they are drilled trough permeable strata of white and grey chalk. - Seaward, mainly through relatively impermeable chalk marl, but with the presence of water in faulted zones, or in grey chalk.

Hachinohe smelter, a zinc-lead blast furnace complex with the annual capacity of zinc plus lead of 100,000 tons, had originally treated normal zinc and lead sulfide concentrates. However, it is currently handling a great variety of raw feeds ranging from complex sulfides to oxidic recycled materials in view of resource economy, most of which are unsuitable for zinc electrolysis. This paper reports on some significant efforts recently carried out on improving sintering operation, i.e., the increasing use of secondaries against harmful ingredients like halogens, and the substantial reduction in energy use as the results of various modifications and improvements.

Previous studies on semi-soluble minerals such as calcite (1) and apatite(2) and sparingly soluble minerals such as quartz (3,4) have given evidence for significant changes in their electrokinetic properties as a function of aging time. Such changes are relevant to mineral processing operations where the crushed ore particles might not have yet reached equili¬brium with the water that it is in contact with. In order that these changes be studied under controlled experimental conditions for long periods unattended or with fairly less intermittant attention, a streaming potential apparatus with an automatic streaming system was constructed. Also, a new streaming potential cell was incorporated into the system so that the effect of temperature, a variable coming into increasing usage in mineral processing operations(5), could also be studied. Conventional streaming cells(6) cannot be safely employed to conduct studies as a function of temperature since they have many glass joints that are prone to leakage, parti¬cularly under pressure, in the course of an experiment. This paper describes the new apparatus and some typical results that have been obtained with it far temperature effects.

This study examines a process for the recovery of precious metals from difficult minerals that exhibit refractory characteristics to cyanidation: low extraction of metals and high consumption of leaching reagent. A mineral sample from Monte del Favor Mine, located in Hostotipaquillo, Jalisco, Mexico, was physically and chemically characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), fire assay and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Two stages of leaching were carried out, first to eliminate manganese from the sample using sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) as a reductive reagent along with sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and second to dissolve gold and silver with hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO). The results show extractions of around 96 percent for manganese (Mn), 98.73 percent for silver (Ag) and 83 percent for gold (Au). The usefulness of high acidity and Na2SO3 to obtain better results in Mn and Ag leaching are discussed along with the roles that HCl and NaClO play in Ag and Au dissolution values.

INTRODUCTION Coal is a solid, combustible mineral substance resulting from the degradation and alteration of vegetable matter largely in the absence of air. In this natural process of coalification, some non-combustible mineral matter is always associated with the combustible material. Coal preparation or cleaning is the process of removing this inert mineral matter from the coal. Preparation is highly successful in removing the large fragments of inert material, but is not very effective in removing the fine inorganic mineral matter intimately associated with the coal. Of the 600 million tons of coal produced in the United States every year, approximately one-half is produced by coal cleaning methods (1). The bulk of this tonnage is cleaned by coarse or intermediate gravity preparation methods (5 inches to 28 mesh, Tyler). Fine cleaning, say, -28 mesh, is done by shaking tables, washing cyclones, and flotation, or, until recently, the fines were either incorporated into the clean coal or simply discarded--not infrequently, the latter. In 1972, only 13 million tons of raw coal were cleaned by flotation in the United States, and from this 8.4 million tons of clean coal were produced (1). The percentage of clean coal produced by flotation in Europe (England, West Germany, Poland, U.S.S.R., etc.) is substantially higher. However, coal flotation has grown rapidly in the United States from only a few plants in 1950 to 31 in 1960 (2) and 66 in 1970 (1). Virtually all new preparation plants incorporate flotation into their basic flowsheet. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to boost domestic production of manganese. Virtually no mining exists in the low grade and/or small deposits that occur in this Country. One large, low-grade manganese deposit located in westcentral Arizona--The Artillery Peak district--was extensively studied and sporadically mined during the 1940&apos;s and 1950&apos;s. Although manganese mining in the district has been long dormant, recent studies indicate that the deposits may be amenable to economical production by heap and/or in situ leaching methods. A conceptual design for an in situ leaching system features undercutting and blasting a block of ore, leaching with SO2, and extracting the manganese as a sulfate or oxide. Possible applications to other manganese deposits depend upon formation permeability and specific manganese mineralogy.
