INTRODUCTION This presentation will address changing trade patterns in lead and zinc from the mid 1980's to the early 1990's. Lead and zinc deposits are developed where they are found in many parts of the world. As many are not in major consuming areas, there is significant international trade in both lead and zinc concentrates and in refined metal. Forecasts of mine production have been analyzed, primary and secondary refining capacity and future consumption levels have been estimated, to arrive at the changes in trade patterns expected during the next half decade. This paper will first address concentrate and metal trade patterns for lead, then for zinc, and finally some remarks will be made on captive mine/smelter agreements, on regional trade agreements, and on barriers to trade. I would like to note that. there is only a small international trade in semi-fabricated products such as zinc die-cast alloy, zinc oxide, lead oxide or rolled lead and zinc. Most of the world's zinc and lead trade is in concentrates or refined metal. LEAD TRADE PATTERNS Lead Concentrates Six countries are exporters of lead concentrates. Three countries are in the Americas - Canada, Mexico and Peru, with two in Africa - Morocco and South Africa (including Namibia), and Australia. Due to the limited growth in lead consumption and consequent minimum investment in new production facilities expected, mine and metal production levels and future consumption levels are not forecast to change much between now and 1990. Accordingly, the tonnage of lead concentrates exported will remain essentially unchanged from these six countries. In total they have exports of 480,000 metric tonnes (metal content)* and by 1990 this figure is forecast to rise only slightly with the only increase taking place in Mexico. The concentrates are exported mainly to Western Europe & Japan. Apart from these six main lead concentrate exporting nations, a significant change is expected in the United States. The U. S. Department of Energy (D.O.E.) requires that the prospective nuclear waste repository in Basalt at Hanford, Washington, comply with State of California mine and tunnel safety orders. These regulations require that all main fans be installed in such a manner as to permit prompt reversal of airflow. This paper evaluates the requirement of air reversal and the appropriateness of imposing such regulations on the proposed nuclear waste repository in Basalt.

"The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the dosage of sodium hypochlorite as activator on the flotations of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, with a focus on activation-flotation kinetics. Four flotation kinetic models were applied to test data using 1stOpt statistical analysis software to estimate the relationships between the maximum flotation recovery rates for the depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the flotation rate constants and the sodium hypochlorite dosages. Within the range investigated, the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite were obtained at 2.5 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with zinc recovery rate of 93.8 percent and 3 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with copper recovery rate of 94.6 percent, respectively, after four minutes of flotation. A second-order model with rectangular distribution of flotabilities gave the best fit to test data collected at various sodium hypochlorite dosages. For the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the respective equations of their flotation models were derived and presented.IntroductionCyanidation tailings are the solid residues generated by gold plants that use cyanide to extract gold (Lv, Ding and Qian, 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013). Because of increasing demand for gold, the Chinese gold industry has developed rapidly, with production amounting to 451.799 tons in 2014, an increase of 5.5 percent from 2013. Chinese gold production has been the highest in the world for eight consecutive years. As a result, more than 2.45 million tons of cyanidation tailings are estimated to be discharged into tailings ponds every year (Li et al., 2010; Lv, Ding and Qian et al., 2015; Wang et al., 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2012), and approximately 300 million tons of cyanide tailings are stockpiled in China, with the potential to cause serious environmental pollution as well as death to wildlife (Adams and Lloyd, 2008; Donato et al., 2007; Hewitt, Breuer and Jeffery, 2012; Velasquez-Lopez et al., 2011; Stephen et al., 2009; Zagury, Oudjehani and Deschenes, 2004). Concerns over cyanidation tailings are not exclusively environmental but also economic, as tailings occupy considerable land area, and tailings storage facilities increase the production costs of gold enterprises (Donato et al., 2007). Tailings often contain other valuable metals such as zinc, lead and copper. For example, the cyanidation tailings of Gaoyao Hetai Gold Plant in Guangdong Province contain 2.5 percent copper (Cu), 0.31 percent lead (Pb), 0.23 percent zinc (Zn) and 15.36 percent iron (Fe) (Shi, 2008), and the tailings of Tianshui Gold Plant in Gansu Province contain 1.94 percent Cu, 5.96 percent Pb, 0.27 percent Zn and 24.62 percent Fe. Cyanidation tailings have therefore been increasingly viewed as a secondary resource rather than waste."

The United States is totally dependent on imports for all primary chromite and most ferrochrome supplies. Although the United States imports chromite and ferrochrome from a number of countries, the long-term future of chromite supplies appears to lie in southern Africa (Republic of South Africa and Zimbabwe) where 88 percent of known world reserves exist. Floreover, low mining costs and the availability of low-cost electricity for ferrochrome production gives South Africa a comparative advantage over most other chromite and ferrochrome-producing nations. A well-known problem faced by the United States is that when viewed from a longer-term perspective, the major sources of supply of metallurgical grade chromite and ferrochrome may be subject to disruption. The three countries that have caused the greatest concern have been the Republic of South Africa, the Soviet Union, and Zimbabwe. South Africa presents a particularly difficult problem because it may be subject to internal political unrest and/or U. N, economic sanctions. South Africa has increased its share of world chromium production from about 30 percent in 1968 to 62 percent in 1978.1

Mining represents the first industry in the United States to have federally mandated training for its workers. Although the topics to be covered are specified in 30 CFR 48, course content is left to the discretion of the individual mine operators. Unfortunately, certain topics to be covered, such as prevention of accidents, are usually mine specific, making it very difficult to use the same course content in every mine. Further, training requirements may change from one mine to another, due to changes in the demographic characteristics of the workers, or changes in job and organizational characteristics. Therefore, if the intention of safety training is to modify the behavior of workers, it is expected that there should be some changes in the content of safety training programs in order to address the specific requirements of individual mines, or at least mines of similar worker and job characteristics. This study has been directed towards the development of a systems-based procedure for conducting a needs analysis. A special effort was made to understand the psychology of worker behavior by analyzing worker reactions to various organizational and job characteristics.

Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. It is also a major exporter of minerals. Canadian open pits are highly mechanized and use state of the art equipment and support technology. During the past few years significant productivity improvements have been achieved by taking advantage of larger equipment; in pit crushing and conveying; truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. The most recent developments in Canadian Open-pit Mining are related to hydraulic transportation and the application of Global Positioning Systems. Mine planning is computerized; environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning; equipment modifications are pursued with vigor to keep them functioning in the hostile Canadian North.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) involves a wide range of practices, from highly informal and minimally mechanized mining operations with predominantly manual work to formal practices carried out by small but high-tech industrial mining operations [1]. ASM may be a traditional practice, with skills passed from one generation to another. It can be an important driver of local economic development, while simultaneously contributing to a complex array of positive and negative socioeconomic and environmental impacts. There are more than 100 million artisanal and small-scale miners in 80 countries worldwide, and they supply around 20% of the worldwide gold production [2]. According to the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mining (MINEM), in 2020, 32% of fatal accidents in formal (legal) Peruvian mining operations were caused by groundfall events [3].The lack of resources, knowledge of best practices in health and safety, and insufficient equipment used in ASM make the probability of suffering work accidents very high. Furthermore, groundfall is one of the main causes of accidents and injuries in underground mines around the world [4], and it is also a concerning problem in ASM, where the associated fatality rate is similarly high. Unfortunately, a proper record of accidents in ASM is not kept, so an estimate of the actual number of groundfall accidents cannot be accurately developed [5]. Currently miners rely on empirical and observational tools acquired through previous experience to assess groundfall risks. The risks for artisanal miners can tend to be significantly greater than risks for those from the mining industry. This is due to the lack of regulation of ASM, which tends to operate outside the legal framework and the regulations lack of enforcement in force for occupational health and safety regulations.

Drifts are the nerve centre of underground mining. They provide essential communications between primary openings and production areas. In view of their strategic importance in the overall safety, economy and productivity of mines, an empirical approach for blast design during drifting has been proposed in this paper. The approach was developed with the objective of minimum blast damage and provides computerized blasthole patterns for drifting operations. The drift blasting practices and problems in Canadian mines have also been reviewed in this paper.

The Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG) is building an international, multi-stakeholder community to advance the availability and use of standards and industry guidelines for the global mining community. Standards and guidelines are key strategic tools for operational excellence, enabling companies to move forward with efficient, innovative operations with reduced risk. Launched in May 2012, the GMSG is the first international center to bring together information, resources and collaborative projects for mining standards and guidelines, in an open, knowledge-sharing forum. The GMSG is supported by five partner organizations providing outreach and helping to guide GMSG activities: the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME), the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) and the Surface Mining Association for Research and Technology (SMART). GMSG was formed under the CIM Surface Mining Society, though its mandate extends to include underground mining as well. ?SME is supporting the GMSG as a key international activity to advance the implementation of standards and guidelines in our industry, and to provide a forum for our members to access, and contribute to, projects and information to assist their operations,? said SME Executive Director David Kanagy. ?We see the GMSG as a good example of ways the major mining associations can work together for the benefit of all our members.? The GMSG charter encompasses all standards and guidelines that apply to mining; however, a number of subject areas are now being spearheaded by six working groups, namely: ? Access and usage of data from mobile mining equipment onboard systems. ? Operational safety. ? Situational awareness (namely, a unified equipment operator interface). ? Underground operations. ? Asset management and operations data definitions and KPIs. ? Energy in communition.

To develop strategic and tactical strategies to manage seismic hazard in a safe and economic manner, it is necessary to understand the spatial and temporal distribution of mine wide seismogenic behavior. Global mine-scale numerical stress modelling provides a means to forward predict seismic susceptibility thereby facilitating informed decision making for the development and implementation of strategic and tactical risk mitigation measures. To make forward predictions of hazard susceptibility using global stress models with reasonable confidence, it is necessary to rigorously calibrate numerical stress models to the observed history of ground reaction. This paper demonstrates quantifiable methods for calibrating numerical models and developing probabilistic prediction criterion using seismic data. The appropriate applications of model inputs (including boundary conditions, constitutive models and material parameterization) specific to global mine-scale modelling are also discussed. Lastly, this paper demonstrates how the calibration process adds value not only to informed decision making, but also to the improved understanding of site geomechanical conditions; including enhanced identification of geotechnical domains and mechanical indicators required for seismic mechanism domaining.

Because of variation in rock type and site conditions, it is important to create site-specific prediction models for peak particle velocity (PPV) and understand instrumentation mounting locations to better interpret the readings provided following blasting operations. The Atlanta Airport is expanding the section of underground tunnels for its Plane Train people mover, and drill and blast operations were determined to be the suitable method of excavation for the project. Extensive work was done to begin creating prediction models and determining levels of concern based on readings from various types of instrumentation. This paper analyzes the effect of close quarters construction blast vibrations and observed frequency spectrum on existing structures with data from 22 different seismographs mounted in various locations and ground conditions.

The introduction of nitro-carbo-nitrate (NCN) blasting agents has been one of the most significant innovations in the explosive industry in the last twenty years. The most commonly used blasting agent is a rather narrowly proportioned mixture by weight of 94% ammonium nitrate (AN) and 6% No. 2 diesel fuel oil (FO) that is generally designated as ANFO. Other formulations have been developed but none of these have been as extensively used as ANFO. The relative safety of the nitro-carbo-nitrate (NCN) blasting agents almost immediately suggested bulk loading techniques to obtain economies in materials handling. The first attempt at bulk handling was to pneumatically load boreholes with ANFO. When the initial experiments were made in 1957, it was apparent that there were three problem areas which needed study to minimize potential hazards. These were: 1. Static Electricity 2. Fumes 3. Safe Handling Procedures Since those early days, considerable work has been performed in evaluating these problem areas and in arriving at procedures and recommendations that would provide the required safety. Despite the relative insensitivity of ANFO type products, all normal practices for the safe handling of explosives should be obselved. Smoking should not be tolerated in the vicinity of blasting agents and misfires should be handled in the same manner as a misfire with a dynamite charge. The purpose of this Technical Report is to discuss the problems of static electricity and fumes and the solutions that have been developed. Safe handling procedures have been discussed by the Bureau of Mines and are specified by various state and local regulations. Since regulations vary from state to state, the local, applicable regulations must be followed within the area of their jurisdiction. General information is contained in a U. S. Bureau of Mines report, IC 8179, "Safety Recommendations for Sensitized Ammonium Nitrate Blasting Agents" (1963).

A research program is currently in progress at the University of British Columbia to determine the potential of composite cable bolt reinforcement in Canadian mines. Several prototypes of glass fibre cable bolts have been tested. Their evaluation consisted of lab testing at the University of British Columbia, United States Bureau of Mines (Spokane) and trial installations at Detour Lake, Winston Lake, and Myra Falls Mines. A market analysis of cable bolts within the Canadian mining industry has been completed. Fibre reinforced polymer composites have a high potential as cable bolt reinforcement in mining applications. They prove to be a viable alternative to steel cable bolting.

There are a number of reasons why the solvent extraction of molybdenum deserves attention: 1. The solvent extraction chemistry of molybdenum is interesting and complex, 2. The price of molybdenum is predicted to average about US$ 20.00 / pound in 2010 and, as China, India and other countries develop, the demand for specialty steels will increase putting long term demands on molybdenum supply, 3. Uranium ores often contain significant concentrations of molybdenum[1] and typically yellow cake will have a moly specification which when exceeded brings penalties, and 4. The valuable metal rhenium is a byproduct of molybdenum recovery circuits.

A recent report to President Reagan from the Business-Higher Education Forum, entitled, "America's Competitive Challenge: Need for a National Response," (1) observes that in the recent past, ". . . much of that research, which is necessary for major breakthroughs and sustained productivity improvements, was redirected to short-term objectives ... At the same time, American universities, which conduct more than half of the nation's basic research, have suffered from an accumulated under-investment in facilities and equipment amounting to an estimated $1-4 billion." Also contributing to the decline in America's productivity, the report said, are "...weak technology transfers between government and industry and between universities and industry..." This report as well as other recent reports and articles have, reopened a subject which has long been debated but rarely resolved-- the interaction between the academic community and industry in the sponsorship and conduct of research. The subject is unfortunately, too often treated as a controversial issue involving ethics and the profit motive when, in fact, the two branches of society -- industry and academia -- are necessarily part of the same system. I would like to speak to you today on the subject of university-industry interactions and to some extent discuss the role of government in such interactions. Finally, I will make some remarks as to how this subject applies to the mining industry.

"The Haile gold mine in South Carolina is increasing the automation level of its processing plant in order to improve operational stability. One step toward this goal is the application of a digital twin concept to provide virtual instruments. Haile has engaged Andritz to implement virtual instruments at its grinding area hydrocyclones and at its tailing thickener underflow pump. These virtual instruments provide density values in a traditionally difficult location for reliable slurry density measurement. The digital twin is a first-principles integrated design engineering with advanced simulation (IDEAS) simulation model, connected in real time to the control system. Results have been promising, with the virtual instrument values matching the physical instrument under normal operating conditions and showing better prediction under upset conditions. Haile plans to use the virtual instruments as optional process control parameters.OceanaGold’s Haile gold mine is located near Kershaw, SC, about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Charlotte, NC. This location was first mined in 1827 and has produced gold through several operating periods since then, including a heap leaching operation from 1985 through 1992. In October 2015, OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals, the previous owner of the Haile operation.The current operation began in 2017 as an openpit mine with additional underground resources. The nameplate throughput is 5,760 t/d (6,350 stpd) ore, and 2017 production was 3,345 kg (118,000 oz) gold, with 3,968 to 4,384 kg (140,000 to 155,000 oz) gold expected in 2018. Proven and probable reserves exceed 85 t (3 million oz) gold at a grade of 2 g/t (0.06 oz/st) gold. The process, as shown in Fig. 1, includes a primary jaw crusher, comminution with a semiautogonous grinding (SAG) mill and ball mill circuit, flash flotation, rougher flotation, regrinding, pre-aeration, carbon-inleach leaching, carbon elution and regeneration, cyanide recovery, electrowinning and refining. The Haile operation’s inaugural gold pour took place Jan. 20, 2017. Mine life is expected through the year 2030."

Coca Mines Inc. is a medium sized company exploring for and developing precious metal properties in the Western United States. They own interests in a number of properties which contain reserves of gold and silver. The Hog Heaven property presently is under development for a combination of open pit and underground mining, followed by recovery of the silver and gold by cyanidation. The United States has traditionally been the world's largest producer and net exporter of phosphate rock and related fertilizer products with the exception of rock exports from Morocco. In recent years, however, U.S. producers have faced increasing competition from operations in foreign countries, leaving the future position of the U.S. phosphate .industry as a leader in the world markets somewhat less certain. This paper will review the U.S. phosphate rock industry in relation to its known demonstrated reserves, its historical and present production and export levels, and its future mining potential. The paper will include an analysis of the availability of phosphate rock in the United States represented by cost-tonnage relationships. The U.S. phosphate rock industry has for decades provided raw materials at reasonable costs to the phosphate fertilizer industry, and the fertilizer products have been made available to both domestic and international markets. Natural soils normally contain low quantities of phosphorus, and cultivation exhausts the available phosphorus through the removal of harvested products. Yields diminish, and it becomes necessary to apply phosphorus to the soil in an amount at least sufficient to compensate for removal. Raising the level of phosphorus also permits nitrogen and potash fertilizer nutrients to be effective and sustain the high crop yields necessary to support increasing food demands. In only a few areas of the world are soils, climate, rainfall, and low-cost phosphate fertilizer available to assure high agricultural yields in successive years. One of these areas is the central United States and south central Canada. By contrast, in the Soviet Union, the weather conditions in farming areas frequently cause crops to either bake or drown in the field. To attempt to counter the effect of weather on production, the U.S.S.R. has increased use of fertilizer and equipment in recent years. The effect of fertilizer on various crops has been documented, and in all cases, improvements in yield and plant development were noted, as was the ability of fertilizer to mitigate the effects of unfavorable climatic conditions. Phosphate resources can be classified as either identified or undiscovered. In the identified classification, we are principally concerned with demonstrated phosphate resources, or those that have been measured or indicated. In the southeastern United States, the phosphate mining areas of Florida and the Carolinas have been explored and drilled extensively in attempts to locate new deposits. The exploration programs indicate that another Florida Bone Valley Formation or North Carolina Pamlico River Deposit is unlikely to be discovered in the southeastern U.S. coastal plain. Phosphate rock deposits of commercial interest in the western United States are located in Montana, western Wyoming, northern Utah, and southeastern Idaho. The deposits are in the Permian Phosphoria Formation with most of the mining activity occurring in Idaho. Although substantial demonstrated resources have been identified, recovery costs and the field's isolation from markets have restricted growth of the industry in the west. The phosphate rock deposits in Tennessee are well known, and it is estimated that about 29 million metric tons1 are potentially recoverable. Undiscovered deposits of brown rock in Tennessee would likely be quite small.

Sands are utilized to make molds for metal castings in the foundry industry. Approximately a half ton of sand is disposed of for each ton of metal cast in this country. In Michigan, annual sand disposal amounts to about one million tons. A process has been developed in this study to reclaim sands from a steel foundry. Physical separations are utilized in conjunction with other operations (such as the removal of binder, metal, spruce, washes, etc.) to yield silica and chromite sands with desirable molding properties. Several different separation methods, including electrostatic, magnetic, and various gravitational approaches have been examined. Experimental results are presented. The applicabilities of these separation methods are discussed.
