"Metallurgical process development in greenfield projects must define the comminution flowsheet and establish the equipment sizes that are required to deliver the project design criteria. These are critical steps that heavily influence the financial performance of the project, requiring a detailed understanding of the ore properties of the project resources and the best practice methods to size comminution machines. This paper reviews current practices for determining the ore characteristics relevant to comminution circuit design. Particular attention is given to the design of sampling and testing programs, and the methods commonly applied to size crushers and mills for conventional size reduction applications in mineral processing. For brownfield projects the same objectives may apply for plant expansions, or the project objective may be simply to define the capacity and operating cost of an existing facility for a new ore source. The process development phase in either instance will typically comprise the following key activities:• Geometallurgical classification and sampling of the ore deposit or deposits.• Determination of comminution energy requirements.• Benchmarking similar projects.• Identification of flow sheet options.• Equipment selection and sizing.This paper is concerned specifically with process development testing and will as such focus on the first two activities on the list: sampling and testing of the deposit. The discussion will focus on testwork programs to support the design of comminution circuits commonly in use in mineral processing today, specifically crusher, tumbling mill and stirred mill technologies.It is important that any testwork program is designed giving consideration to the types of flow sheets that are viable for the project, and the data that will need to be generated to support the final equipment sizing. Designing a testwork program to only provide information about one particular type of flow sheet will not allow sufficient information to be generated for a rigorous trade-off analysis of options, and may therefore preclude financial optimization of the project. Testing programs should be designed to collect sufficient data to ensure that any backtracking at a later stage to fill in missing information is minimal."

An open pit mining equipment maintenance program, in order to be successful, must have many active segments covering the full range of equipment selection, trained personnel, repair facilities, preventive maintenance programs, warehousing, interdepartmental cooperation, paperwork and effective communications. The mine maintenance program is required to protect company assets Which are units of equipment generating revenue. The program should result in reduced unscheduled equipment downtime, increased equipment productivity rates, and decreased unit operating costs. Current maintenance problems; maintenance effectiveness and future projections on equipment maintenance are discussed. Equipment maintenance is big business and the maintenance department is a full-time partner in the mining venture.

Atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) are required when using air from conveyor belt entries to ventilate working sections in U.S. underground coal mines. AMS technology has the potential to increase fire safety mine-wide, but research is needed to determine the detection and response times for fires of a variety of combustible materials. To evaluate the potential of an AMS for fire detection in other areas of a coal mine, a series of full-scale fire experiments were conducted to determine detection and response times from fires of different combustible materials that are found in U.S. underground coal mines, including high- and low-volatility coals, conveyor belts, brattice materials, different types of wood, diesel fuel, and a foam sealant. These experiments were conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) located in Pittsburgh, PA, using a commercially available AMS that is typical of current technology. The results showed that through proper selection of sensors and their locations, a mine-wide AMS can provide sufficient early fire warning times and improve the health and safety of miners.

Surface characterization techniques, i.e. contact angle measurement, atomic force microscopy (AFM) surface force and surface imaging measurement, were applied to investigate the molybdenite surface in aqueous solution. It was shown that the cleaved basal surface of molybdenite was very hydrophobic with a 92 degree water contact angle. The non-polar component of the solid surface free energy is 50.52 mJ/m2 while the polar components are almost zero. The solid surface was not reactive and was only weakly charged at the pH 6. When the aqueous media changes from water to 1×10-4 M KEX solution, the measured contact angle, adhesion force and surface roughness all increase slightly. However, ethanol rinsing made the surface change back to the bare substrate. It was suggested that the hydrophobic chemical, i.e. dixanthogen, which was shown in the morphology of patches by the AFM image, physically adsorbed on the hydrophobic molybdenite surface through the hydrophobic interaction.

The world's biomass with its species-specific ability to concentrate metallic elements must provide one of the dominant concentration and transport systems for such elements. Given that about thirty elements are now considered bio-essential, for all these biomass may control their environmental behavior. Life appears to be present in almost all places where liquid water is present at temperatures near 100°C or below. In the surface environment a very large array of simple minerals are produced in living cells and such processes can lead to economic concentrations. Because of the specific nature of bioconcentration of elements, in all environments where biomaterials accumulate, interesting metal concentrations may occur or the molecular fragments from bio-degradation may allow specific metal transport and concentration. The scale of biological-inorganic interactions on our planetary surface is still inadequately appreciated.

Some 146 kt (4.69 billion oz) of gold have been mined throughout history. Of this, 70% has been mined in this century alone, with 17% produced from 1985 through 1996 (Fig. 1 and Table 1). Until the mid-19th century, placers were the chief source of gold. Advancements in mining, metallurgy and geological thinking have resulted in underground mining (first of veins plus stockworks and later of Rand-type deposits) becoming the principal source of gold. With the demise of the South African deposits and the move towards lower grade ores, the primary source of gold will be from disseminated deposits exploited through large, open-pit mines. For the past 200 years, there has been a fairly constant ratio of about 31 g (1 oz) of gold to each person alive. If this ratio is to be maintained, annual gold production will have to rise from about 2.3 kt/a (73.9 million oz/year) to more than 3.1 kt/a (99.7 million oz/year) by the year 2000. To effect this increase, an unforeseen breakthrough in exploration or metallurgy is needed. Barring this, there will be pressure for an increase in the price of gold. This article traces the historical production of gold from 4000 B.C. - the earliest record of gold mining - to today and relates this 6,000-year record to advances in geological thinking, mining engineering and extractive metallurgy. It also proposes that man's thirst for gold, reflected in the price he will pay for gold, and his ability to find, mine and refine gold have combined to effect an equilibrium based loosely on the historical ratio of 31 g (1 oz) of cumulative gold production per each man or woman alive.

The packed column flotation cell is an awesome separation device. Virtually unknown and untested, the packed column flotation cell is one of the ten most important developments in mineral processing of the 21st century. Though experimental and industrial data is limited, it is clear that the packed column flotation cell is two to three orders of magnitude better than the conventional flotation cell and one to one and a half orders of magnitude better than the open column flotation cell. With the modern packing taking up less than one percent of the packed column, column blocking does not occur. For a packed column operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the estimated mean time between failures (MTBF) is one hundred thousand hours or roughly twelve years. With no moving parts, lower maintenance costs, lower power consumption and inherent operating stability, the packed column is a powerful separating machine. Because there is little meaningful data for comparing the packed column to the conventional flotation cell and the open column flotation cell, much of the material presented in this paper are guesstimates. They are disinterested guesstimate made by the authors after extensive theoretical work and reviewing the known facts. In the authors' opinion, no available data contradicts the guesstimate. The authors expect that there may be errors as large as three hundred percent. Even three hundred percent errors will not change the conclusions of this paper. The packed column flotation cell is a formidable separating device. To understand the problems of comparing the three types of flotation cells, consider the fact that the three cells may have different modes of separation. One of the authors, Meloy, believes that in the conventional cell, the primary particle separation takes place in the liquor with secondary separation taking place in the froth, while for open column flotation, all the separation takes place in the froth. However, he believes that in the packed column a large part of the separation may take place on the walls of the packing. If this is true, not only is the method of modeling each type of cell different, but the method of particle selection in the cell is different. This means that one type of cell may be better at differentiating between two different types of particles. There is a growing body of literature on open and packed column flotation. In 1992, 48 million tons of fly ash (not including bottom ash, boiler slag and FGD material) was produced in the United States, according to the American Coal Ash Association. Of this amount, 27.2% was utilized; although the percentage of fly ash utilized increased from 20% in 1980, there is significant potential to increase utilization. One of the primary driving forces behind increased utilization is increased disposal costs due to more stringent environmental controls and regulation. Fly ash is classified as a natural pozzolan and finds significant use as a cement additive. It has been found to increase the plasticity of the cement mixture while lowering the amount of mix water needed. In addition to improving leveling and finishing properties, fly ash improves pumpability as well as decreases the heat of hydration of the concrete mix which is particularly important in massive concrete structures such as dams where the concrete needs to cool as quickly as possible. The Loss on Ignition (LOI) of fly ash is an important quality when considering utilization. The LOI is primarily due to the presence of unburned carbon and the standard specifications for the use of fly ash as a mineral admixture in Portland cement concrete are given in ASTM C618-89a. which sets an LOI limit of 6%. However, many states have set a more stringent limit of 3%. The primary reason for the lower LOI specification is that carbon adsorbs air entraining agents which limits freeze-thaw resistance. This is particularly important in climates such as the midwestern US where multiple cycles of freezing and thawing are typical in winter.

Mining in Peru is mainly concentrated on metallic and polymetallic ores of gold, copper, lead, zinc, silver, tin, iron, etc. However, little has been done to develop extensive and rich non-metallic or Industrial Minerals deposits with the exception of some silica and phosphate deposits. This paper presents the characterization and metallurgical studies for the development of a feldspar deposit. These studies showed that the special characteristics of the ore, such as high porosity, high Al2O3 content, low clays content, and sized material allowed us to obtain commercial products applying relatively simple and low cost concentrating unit operations. The characterization studies showed that the feldspar products contained no quartz and about 90% of albite (NaAlSi3O8). The 14x40-mesh size fraction product analyzed 5.91% Na2O, 22.56% Al2O3, 65.73% SiO2, 0.65% K2O, 6.50% CaO, and 0.40% Fe2O3; whereas, the 40x150-mesh size fraction product analyzed 6.22% Na2O, 24.30% Al2O3, 60.80% SiO2, 0.91% K2O, 7.06% CaO, and 0.54% Fe2O3. These products could be used for manufacturing glass, ceramics, refractory, and filters in different applications. In addition, Middlings, could be used as insulation material due to its porosity (bulk density of 0.828 Kg/dm3), analyzing 4.46% Na2O, 15.7% Al2O3, 67.2% SiO2, 2.57% K2O, 3.94% CaO, and 4.24% Fe2O3. The material showed a sphericity of 0.77, a roundness of 0.68, and acid solubility of 13.3025% on only washed and 2.72% effective for clean material suitable for use in these applications. No selective accumulation of the valuable mineral was observed at any specific size fraction. However, iron and titanium bearing impurities trended to concentrate in fine fractions (minus 70 mesh -212 µm-). Metallurgical studies demonstrated that this feldspar ore required sizing at 14x40 mesh and 40x150 mesh to render commercial products. In the case of the 14x40-mesh size fraction, the process involved magnetic separation, gravity separation, and flotation for feldspar (direct flotation) using a blend of primary and condensate amines. However, the reverse flotation for mica-biotite and iron bearing minerals was also possible using petroleum sulfonate. The metallurgical process for the 40x150-mesh size fraction required magnetic separation and reverse flotation of iron and titanium bearing minerals, the feldspar being reported in the sink material. Commercial products from this feldspar deposit for glass, ceramics, refractory, and filtration; and for the manufacturing of insulation material were obtained.

In this study, the conditions of raw materials and fuels were simulated for Bayan Obo iron ore concentrate by adding pure calcium fluoride (CaF2) in various concentrations to Australian iron ore. The mechanism by which the fluorine (F) content of the lattice influenced the reduction swelling properties of the iron ore briquettes during various stages of the reduction process was investigated. The results provide insight into the mechanism governing the reduction swelling process in Bayan Obo ore briquettes, which could be used to direct real?world production practices, particularly those related to the rational utilization of Bayan Obo ore resources.

of high specific gravity, resistant minerals that form from mechanical concentration by waves, currents, and winds in marginal-marine environments. These sediments are enriched in critical minerals such as titanium, zirconium, and REE. Cretaceous beach-placer sandstones are found in the Colorado Plateau of northwestern New Mexico. Originally discovered by airborne radiometric surveys for uranium in the 1950s, these beach-placer sandstones are being re-examined with modern methods as potential sources for critical minerals. Selected beach-placer sandstones have been sampled, mapped with ground radiometric surveys, and analyzed with whole-rock and trace element geochemical methods. Mineralogy is being determined with optical methods, XRD, and EMPA. Zircon, rutile, ilmenite, and monazite are the primary heavy minerals of interest found in the studied deposits. Initial results show that the sandstones contain up to 1.4% total REE, 29.4% TiO2, and an estimated 4.9% ZrO2. Chondrite-normalized REE diagrams show distinct light REE and minor heavy REE enrichment, as well as pronounced negative Eu anomalies for each deposit.

NIOSH researchers and an industry partner conducted an investigation to study the effectiveness of ergonomic interventions in mining. The study required a significant commitment of time and resources from the cooperating site, Bridger Coal Company. This paper focuses on some of the challenges faced by the researchers and their cooperator. Challenges included the need to redesign methods of identifying and prioritizing injuries, and the need to train the workforce in ergonomics while still maintaining progress and interest in the process. The authors discuss some practical interventions implemented by Bridger Coal to date, and discuss future research implications brought about by PacifiCorp’s Generation Business Unit, who monitored the project to determine whether an employee-owned ergonomic process could be implemented throughout their operations.

Adverse ground behavior events, such as convergence and ground falls, pose critical risks to underground mine safety and productivity. Today, monitoring of such failures is primarily conducted using legacy techniques with low spatial and temporal resolution while exposing workers to hazardous environments. This study assesses the potential of novel simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM)-based light detection and ranging (lidar) data quality for rapid, digital and, eventually, autonomous minewide underground geotechnical monitoring. We derive a comprehensive suite of quality metrics based on tests in two underground mines for two state-of-the-art mobile laser scanning (MLS) systems. Our results provide evidence that SLAM-based MLS systems provide data of the quality required to detect geotechnically relevant changes while being significantly more efficient for large mine layouts when compared to traditional static systems. Additionally, we show that SLAM-specific processing can achieve an order of magnitude better relative accuracy relevant for change detection than quality metrics derived from traditionally deployed tests would suggest, while reducing SLAM-drift error by up to 90 percent. In collaboration with an operating block-caving mine, we confirm these capabilities in field tests on a minewide scale and, for the first time, demonstrate methods of rockfall detection using MLS data. While more work is required to investigate optimal collection, processing and utilization of MLS data, we demonstrate its potential to become an effective and widely applicable data source for rapid, accurate and comprehensive geotechnical inspections.

The California Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) is the nation's first legislation establishing a statewide mineral resource policy governing mining activities that recognizes regional needs and retains local autonomy. The Southern California Rock Products Association supported this proposed legislation. It was through our efforts that SMARA was passed in 1975. The local planning and zoning processes, which are so critical to the mining industry, have been significantly improved with implementation of SMARA. Recognition of the importance of the mining industry is now being developed by the State Mining and Geology Board and the California Division of Mines and Geology (CDMG).

The Courthouse Commons SEM Tunnel was excavated within 6 feet of cover beneath two buildings in downtown San Diego utilizing high-precision geotechnical instrumentation. The excavated dimensions are approximately 25 feet in diameter and 328 feet in length connecting two in-service detentionlevel security buildings. Presupport includes large-diameter grouted canopy pipes and smaller pipe spiles. Initial support consists of fiber-reinforced shotcrete with lattice girders. This paper presents observed ground and structure behavior and lessons learned. The fluidized solids technique for the calcination of phosphate rock has been well established for over 10 years. This paper is intended to review the recent performance of many of the Dorr-Oliver FluoSolids* calciners. In addition, design features of these three compartment refrac¬tory construction reactors will be described and a comparison made with fuel requirements for single compartment calcination. Also presented will be certain, aspects of the use of the rock including a discussion of non sulfate sulfur in the rock. A system is described for producing a blended mixture of calcined and uncalcined rock.

The City of New Haven is planning to construct the Downtown Storm Sewer Infrastructure Improvement project to mitigate on-going stormwater flooding in the Long Wharf District. The proposed project includes a 685 cubic feet per second (cfs) stormwater pump station and a 3,200 linear feet (975 meter) long tunnel segment with an internal diameter of 120-inches (3.05 meters). This paper presents the aspects of the final design and the use of the cloud-based data management software to make better data-informed decisions. The software was used to create a spatially aware database of the subsurface conditions, as well as improve visualization and analysis of the soil properties.
