Dr. Emrick, honored guests, distinguished speakers, ladies and gentlemen, I am Langan Swent, Vice President for Environmental Affairs and Occupational Safety and Health, of Homestake Mining Company. Today, I appear on behalf of the American Mining Congress, as chairman of its uranium mine health subcommittee. The American Mining Congress is a trade association of several hundred members, which include the producers of a large proportion of the nation's uranium. I've been asked to make a statement of principles for the uranium industry. There are two types of principles that apply to industry in general, and specifically to the uranium industry. Some have external origins and apply regardless of what industry does or thinks. Others are generated by industry itself and serve as goals for the industry. I'll discuss some of each type. I'll limit my statement to those principles related to the subject of this conference--radiation hazards in mining. I won't take your time trying to explain some of the unrelated principles that we must all contend with, such as Parkinson's Laws, Murphy's Law, and the Peter Principle. First and foremost, industry has a sincere interest in the well-being and health of its employees. There are two basic reasons for this. One is a basic respect for human lives, especially those of people we see and work with every day. No one in management wants to carry the lifelong burden of blame for a life lost due to poor working conditions. Most uranium and other mining is done in small communities. Production workers, maintenance workers, service workers, shift bosses, foremen, superintendents and managers all live in the same community. They attend the same churches. They serve together in civic activities. Their children go to the same schools. If one employee in such a community loses his life due to poor working conditions, those remaining know in a daily and intimate way the resulting personal tragedy, usually of a bereaved widow and fatherless children. This sad experience makes the community, including industry management, intensely sensitive to the need for maintaining good working conditions in the mines. But what about the segment of industry that does not live in the mining communities? Corporate and owner's offices are frequently hundreds of miles from the communities where the mining takes place. Many of these people are not personally acquainted with the workers, and there are few close personal ties between the two communities. The distant staff are, however, still human beings and motivated by the same basic human respect for life. Mr. Manuel Gomez of MSHA and a member of the planning committee for this conference summed this point up expressively when he told me: "No one group has a corner on compassion." In addition to compassion, there is another factor. In both communities the basic assignment to everyone is to produce profits. In carrying out this assignment, supervisory and management people are acutely aware of the high cost of illnesses and accidents. Their objective of maximizing profits is advanced significantly by minimizing illnesses and accidents at the mines. A business that has illnesses and accidents generally suffers from poor employee morale and high employee turnover, both of which detract from profits. Next, I would like to talk about what industry has done in the field that is the subject of this conference. We have worked at all sorts of methods to reduce exposure of employees since the exposure standards were first introduced and then lowered. Other speakers will go into details of technology, and I'll simply comment on exposure results. These are best shown in Table 1. The table shows the average WL to which miners in U.S. underground uranium mines have been exposed since 1937 through 1980. The trend of decreasing radon daughter concentrations throughout the period is obvious. Figure 1 presents this data graphically and shows the trend at a glance. This record begins in 1937 when uranium, as such, really wasn't being mined or sought. The concentrations given by the U.S. Public Health Service were for a few small vanadium mines which carried uranium as a by-product. A few years later, when the Manhattan project to develop the atomic bomb was begun, these mines became the first U.S. uranium mines and the vanadium became the by-product! The radiation hazard then also received attention and the average concentrations began to decline. As knowledge of the reality of the hazard spread, conditions improved. The search for uranium in the U.S. turned up new and larger ore bodies that had to be mined by large underground mines. These mines involved ventilation planning from the beginning, and when they came into production in the late 1950's they lowered the average concentrations greatly. Then in 1960 the American Standards Association adopted a standard setting 1 working level as a satisfactory condition, and several action levels up to 10WL, at which point removal of people from exposure was called for. As a result of the uranium producing states governors' conference in December 1960, state mine inspection agencies, in the early 1960's, began to adopt and enforce the ASA standards. As a result, average concentrations again declined. In 1967, the Federal Radiation Council recommended an annual limitation of 12 WLM per individual. Particle collection is considered to occur by particle collision with the bubble followed by the particle sliding over the bubble during which attachment may occur. Collision is quantified by a collision efficiency, EC. The existing model for EC is extended by including particle inertia. Attachment is quantified by an attachment efficiency, EA calculated as the fraction of particles which reside on the bubble for a time greater than the induction time. These calculations use recent data on the liquid velocity distribution over the upper half of rigid spheres. Collection efficiency, EK is given by EK = EC ? EA. Detachment is not considered. The mode is examined and shown to agree with much experimental data. For example the maximum observed in recovery vs particle size (d) can be explained as E increases with increasing d , while EA decreases. The decrease in selectivity at fine sizes is in accord with the model result that for dp < 5µm, EA ? 100% (i.e. EK ? EC) almost regardless of induction time. A decrease in bubble size does increase EK but does not improve selectivity. A high particle density (> 5g/cm3) is shown to cause a sharp peak in recovery vs size and a decreased maximum size of floatability. Finally, the possible effects of bubble and particle concentration are explored.

"The Toyama Line is under construction as a natural gas pipeline with a length of 102 km from Itoigawa City to Toyama City. A 2 km-long tunnel section of the pipeline that we are reporting here is being excavated in a mountain area away from an urban area. The geology under which the tunnel is constructed is collapsible fractured breccia slate and Holocene sandy soil. Other tunnels of the Hokuriku Expressway and Hokuriku Shinkansen are in service above the tunnel route. From the starting shaft on Toyama side, conventional tunneling was adopted to facilitate excavating the base rock layer and maintain enough distance from the Hokuriku Expressway tunnel. From the starting shaft on the Itoigawa side, TBM tunneling was adopted to cope with the unconsolidated soft ground for a 200 m-long section from the shaft. We will discuss the issues and countermeasures concerning the selection of a tunnel route and excavation methods, performance of both conventional and TBM tunneling, and underground connecting of these tunnels excavated by conventional (NATM) and TBM methods under a high groundwater pressure up to 1.2 MPa. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The International Petroleum Exploration Teiseki Co., Ltd. (INPEX) is constructing a high-pressure main pipeline network in the Toyama Prefecture area to promote the use and reliable supply of natural gas as shown in Figure 1. As part of the Toyama line project that has a total length of 102 km, A-1 construction, the nearest section to the tunneling starting point in Itoigawa City, where various tunnel excavation methods have been adopted to install the high-pressure pipeline 20 inches in diameter, a 2 km tunnel in the A-1 construction section discussed here is to be excavated by conventional and TBM methods in a mountain area. Based on environmental studies such as traffic jams due to frequent traffic of heavy vehicles disposing of soil, and the effects of dust, noise and vibration during construction, we selected the route to install the gas pipeline in a mountain area as shown in Figure 2, where the impact on the surrounding environment could be minimized."

Carbon in the form of coke is used as a reactant in various chemical and metallurgical processes, The high cost of by-product coke along with its periodic lack of availability and high investment necessary for additional by-product recovery facilities indicate the need for a low-cost production unit based on a new procedure for coke manufacture, Traveling-grate coking-stokers were developed by Shawinigan Chemicals Ltd. to produce coke required for carbide manufacture, They were adapted to kilns so that the hot volatile gases could be used for lime burning, Their operation has been described in various patent disclosures (1, 2, 3), and their application to rotary lime burning kilns has been described by Andersen (4). Details of the process and plants have also been published by Kurt Baum (5,6).

"Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), or drones, capable of collecting and retrieving water samples from pit lakes, tailings ponds and other mine water basins will revolutionize environmental programs by lowering sampling costs and reducing safety related risks. Costs typically include a boat and associated equipment, boat transportation, road maintenance, water safety devices, water safety training, and additional staff. Typically, the total cost can exceed $20,000 USD per sampling event (excluding lab analyses). Hazards include potential for drowning, unstable pit walls, and unconsolidated sediment surrounding tailings ponds. Hatch has developed a novel device for aerial drones which currently enables the collection of water samples from depths up to 390 ft (119 m). This system only requires a pilot, a sample technician, and a safe operations point overlooking the water body. Hatch anticipates this will reduce monitoring cost by at least 50% while improving safety, reducing staffing requirements and accelerating data acquisition. This manuscript demonstrates profiling and sample collection from a 95 ft (29 m) deep reservoir and a 377 ft (115 m) deep pit lake, and highlights the potential of this emerging technology. INTRODUCTION Working on or near water at active, closed, or abandoned mine sites is inherently dangerous. Between 1996 and 1999, the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported 17 fatalities involving drowning at US metal, non-metal, and coal mines (MSHA, 2000). Open pit mines which fill with water following mine closure, called pit lakes, present numerous risks to environmental monitoring teams including drowning, hypothermia, falls to the ground from the top of high walls, and rock avalanches resulting from steep, unstable pit walls. Some pit lakes are simply not easily accessible for ongoing monitoring. However, the routine collection of water samples from the entire water column on at least an annual basis is required to monitor the evolution of water quality over time, to verify the accuracy of numerical predictions, and to manage lake water chemistry in order to produce “treatable” influent to water treatment plants, and ultimately, produce acceptable site discharge water quality. As a product of these risks and the need for water sample, mining companies spend considerable expense on pit lake safety as part of monitoring. This includes training personnel for “on water” duties and hazards, purchasing or hiring specialized equipment and personnel (such as boats, boat operators, personal floatation devices, and mustang suits), stabilizing pit walls and maintaining safe access roads to the lake surface, employing spotters with direct communication to emergency medical services to watch sampling activities (because cell phones and radio signals can be blocked by pit walls), and utilizing redundancy to prepare for unexpected incidents and accidents. For example, one Canadian mining company requires pit lake water samplers to hold Marine Emergency Duties (MED) training to ensure the entire boat crew is sufficient and competent for the safe operation of the vessel, and uses three boats for water sampling: two on the water at all times, and one on the shoreline, ready to deploy. The costs of these safety mechanisms greatly adds to the overall expense associated with pit lake sampling. Consequently, environmental programs may need to reduce the frequency of pit lake sampling in order to keep monitoring programs within an acceptable budget"

The I-75 Modernization Project (Segment 3) just north of Detroit, MI is being delivered as a Design-Build-Finance-Maintain (DBFM), which is a Public Private Partnership (P3). The project includes design and reconstruction of 5.5 miles of freeway, including a depressed section with a 20,630-ft long, 14.5-ft inside diameter, up to 100-ft deep stormwater tunnel, multiple drop shafts, and a pump station. The project also includes a maintenance term of 25-years. This is the first time MDOT has used a P3 delivery method for a major highway and tunnel project. This paper describes the development of the P3 documents, including performance-based tunnel and shaft technical requirements, and the approach to project risk management, financing, and insurance coverage.

Mining has been recognized among the most hazardous industries in the United States, despite the significant reduction in injury and fatality rates over the past century. This study focuses on the ground-fall incidents classified in the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) database as “fall of roof, back, or brow from in-place” and “fall of face, rib, pillar, side, or highwall.” The main objective of this study is to conduct a comprehensive statistical analysis of the reported ground-fall incidents from 2010 through 2019 including both coal and metal/non-metal mines. Since most of the ground-fall injuries and fatalities occurred in underground coal mines and were attributed to falls of roof and rib, an additional analysis was directed to evaluate roof- and rib-fall incident trends in underground coal mines associated with the mining method, coal-seam thickness, mine size, and the seasonal effects.

Safe, efficient underground mining is dependent upon proper pillar sizing. Pillar sizing is typically based on a combination of observation of prior behavior, point measurements, theory and numerical modeling. The actual stress redistribution within a pillar, while assumed for many years, has rarely been imaged. Such imaging can help confirm whether or not theoretical and numerical modeling methods agree with actual conditions within a pillar. This research presents a case study from a longwall mine in the western United States. A two-entry, gate-road yield pillar in the headgate of the mine was instrumented with seismometers and convergence monitoring stations, and was monitored over a period of about six months as the longwall face approached the pillar. In this paper, the stress distribution imaged using seismic tomography is compared to the stress distribution expected from theoretical models, geotechnical measurements and numerical models. The tomography results generally agree with those proposed by theory, convergence measurements and numerical modeling results. The agreement of the methods provides validation for the theorized stress redistribution, and this study provides further evidence that tomography can indicate the redistribution of induced stress within a mined rockmass and is another tool available to ensure that mining is conducted safely and efficiently.

The knowledge of aggregate size under various chemical and hydrodynamic conditions is very important for selective agglomeration, flotation and water clarification processes. Traditionally, aggregate size measurements are conducted using an ex-situ technique or in a diluted suspension. In either case, the measurement occurs in an environment that does not resemble the actual conditions under which the aggregates are formed. In this study, an on-line scanning laser microscope has been used to study the coagula size of micronized coal suspensions as a function of pH, solids concentration and agitation intensity. A maximum aggregate size of 310 µ m was obtained under relatively quiescent conditions and at pH values near the iso-electric point (iep) of the coal. The aggregate size results compare well with the coagulation efficiency measurements obtained under the same pH conditions.

Silicon is the most widely recognized semiconductor material, but gallium, indium, and germanium are rated as the most important metals to the semiconductor industry for future and near future technologies.

"Ore morphology plays a vital role during the milling and liberation of minerals. This study was carried out to understand the role of mineral crystallography and mineral interfaces on the milling and liberation processes. Data related to mineral crystallography, Vickers Hardness Number and beneficiation processes were collected from literature, and detailed statistical analysis was conducted to relate these parameters. Review of the crystallographic information of minerals present in ores indicates that molecular weight and cell parameters significantly affect milling and liberation characteristics. Mineral interfaces were classified into the three categories of coherent crystals, semi-coherent and incoherent crystals, and breakage behaviors were studied. The studied cases revealed that these material interfaces control the micropore properties that play a vital role in the initiation of intergranular and intercrystalline fractures which occur in siliceous manganese ores and dolomite as a result of thermal treatment. In contrast, banded hematite jasper and coal exhibited a much more complex fracture pattern due to their coherent interfaces and finer physical associations. This study explains the effect of the various types of interfaces on milling, and the approach can be helpful in developing a methodology to enhance mineral liberation with minimum energy consumption.IntroductionComminution is a vital unit operation in the mineralprocessing, cement-making, power-generation and pharmaceutical industries. Its importance in mineral beneficiation operations is increasing every year as a result of the growing need to exploit lower-grade ore bodies and process reject materials (Blazy et al., 1994; DOE, 2005). Low-grade ores require significant energy during grinding to liberate the valuable minerals, which are further separated from the gangues by various beneficiation methods. Various attempts have been made to enhance mineral liberation during grinding to minimize energy consumption. Most of these studies focused on the analyses of the compression mechanism, chemical additives, thermal treatment, microwave treatment and electric disintegration (Klimpel and Austin, 1982; Norgate and Weller, 1994; Bearman et al., 1997; Kumar et al., 2010; Wang et al., 2011; Singh et al., 2012). However, many of these efforts had limited success, and there is a need to see the problem from a fresh perspective."

"Mitigation may be considered a hurdle when it comes to environmental permitting. For complex projects with site specific mitigation plans, the time to devise those plans and get them approved can be a long and costly endeavor. However, mitigation options are expanding and the mitigation banking industry has grown tremendously over the last two decades, helping projects move forward with less debate. Mining companies are recognizing the value that mitigation banks provide in helping to shore up project timelines and costs. Where possible, companies are taking advantage of the opportunities to buy credits from thirdparty providers offering mitigation bank credits. In some instances, mining companies are taking matters into their own hands by establishing mitigation banks to realize their own mitigation freedom. That can have its advantages and disadvantages, as discussed below. All in all, the expansion of mitigation options has streamlined the permitting process, introduced flexibility, improved project permitting timelines and loosened the permitting girdle.Compensatory mitigationCompensatory mitigation involves actions taken to offset unavoidable adverse impacts to wetlands, streams and other aquatic resources and authorized by Clean Water Act section 404 permits and other permits. As such, compensatory mitigation is a critical tool in helping the federal government meet the longstanding national goal of ‘‘no net loss’’ of Waters of the U.S., both in acreage and function.Section 314 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2004 required the Secretary of the Army, acting through the Chief of Engineers, to issue regulations “establishing performance standards and criteria for the use, consistent with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, of on-site, offsite, and in-lieu fee mitigation and mitigation banking.” The provision also required that those regulations ‘‘maximize available credits and opportunities for mitigation, provide flexibility for regional variations in wetland conditions, functions and values, and apply equivalent standards and criteria to each type of compensatory mitigation’’ (73 FR 19595). The result was the Final Rule on Compensatory Mitigation for Losses of Aquatic Resources issued in 2008 (33 CFR Parts 325 and 332).”"

Apart from its role as an essential input to a wide array of agricultural chemicals and industrial processes, sulfur is interesting in that its supply involves competition between primary product and by-product. This general production structure is found repeatedly among markets for metals and other industrial minerals, and research results from the sulfur market potentially carry over to other markets with similar structures. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the recent and prospective market for sulfur. The analysis will rely heavily on simulation using a comprehensive model of the North American sulfur market developed by the author. Dutch State Mines [D.S.M] introduced the Heavy Medium Cyclone into the United States for cleaning fine coal about three decades ago. Since that time the general industry practice has been to deslime the raw coal at 28 Mesh (0. 59mm) size. The plus 28M material is fed to the Heavy Medium Cyclone for cleaning, and the 28M x 0 fraction is processed by other means (e. g. flotation or hydrocyclones). This approach recognized that 28M was the smallest size particle that could be easily rinsed on vibratory screens without excessive loss of magnetite, and without blinding of sieve bend and vibratory screen decks. Another reason for the 28M de-sliming was to avoid excessive contamination of the media with non-magnetic coal, shale, or clay fines. The most undesirable of these contaminants is the sub-micron size clay particles (2) that greatly increase the viscosity of the media and reduce the numerical maximum level that the media specific gravity can obtain due to the lower specific gravity of clay with respect to magnetite. The higher the fugitive clay content, the more severe the preceding problems become. During the last 30 years, many conventional Heavy Medium Cyclone Plants have been built throughout the world. In the United States, the initial cyclone plants were confined to the production of high quality metallurgical coal where lower gravities of separation were required than could be obtained from the conventional hydraulic or air separation processes. In recent years a large and ever-increasing number of preparation plants producing steam coal have started utilizing Heavy Medium Cyclone technology due to the environmental pressures being encountered to produce low sulphur coal. Due to the inherent characteristic of many coals of having a lower pyritic sulphur content at lower specific gravity fractions, many applications and markets are appearing for separating steam coals at much lower specific gravities than have been historically normal in the United States. Therefore. Heavy Medium Cyclones are being utilized to a much greater degree in this field, due to the flexibility of low separating gravity ability coupled with high efficiency when high percentage of near gravity material is present.

This one day field trip is sponsored by the Denver Region Exploration Geologists? Society, May 14th 2009. The trip highlights major geologic features and some notable uranium occurrences along the north-south mountain-basin boundary southwest of Denver and continuing north to Fort Collins, Colorado. Uranium deposits visited include sandstone?hosted roll front type and polymetallic veins hosted in metamorphic rocks. A replacement ?episyenite? type occurrence is considered via description and hand samples but is not visited owing to logistical constraints. Recovery methods addressed include underground mining and in-situ leach recovery. Samples of Precambrian basement rocks, deposit host rocks, uranium ore samples, and ore polished sections viewed by reflected light microscopy will be available. A road map showing the locations of the stops serves as the front cover of this field guide. The Robinson episyenite-hosted occurrence (not visited) is labeled as Stop 6. A stratigraphic column is provided which shows the position of the host rocks at each stop (Figure 1-1).

The paper about to be presented deals with the relatively straightforward problem of mining two seams of coal separated by an interval. This may seem to be a simple problem but within a twenty-mile radius of Consolidation Coal Company&apos;s Burning Star # 4 Mine at least seven (7) different techniques of two-seam mining have either been tried or are now in use. This great variety of techniques should point out that there is no single simple solution; a conclusion often reached when dealing with mining problems. As a background for the techniques presently in use at the Burning Star # 4 Mine, we will briefly outline the other five (5) stripping techniques used in the area: 1. Captain Hine 6360 Range Diagram (Figure 1) 2. Leahy Mine Range Diagram (Figure 2) 3. Burning Star # 3 Mine 5860 Range Diagram (Figure 3) 4. Burning Star # 3 and # 4 Mines Dragline in Pit Range Diagram (Figure 4) 5. Captain Hine 2570/5561 Range Diagram (Figure 5) Each of these techniques was chosen because it provided the best and least expensive alternative for mining the coal under the particular restraints encountered. The Mine Engineers at our Burning Star # 4 Mine, Mr. Dennis Mahan and Mr. William Weaver, will now detail two additional mining techniques, out-lining our experience to date.

Gold assays from production blastholes in the Mercur Hill Pit were used to delineate known ore zones and to determine how well previous exploration drilling defined these zones. The most important factors causing inadequate ore zone definition were: 1) inappropriate location of drill holes relative to the ore zones, 2) presence of stopes from previous mining, 3) sampling and assaying errors, and 4) smoothing of the ore zone boundaries during ore reserve estimation. Infill drilling strategies were evaluated to determine the efficiency with which a given drill pattern defined the known ore zones. A drilling strategy was developed which improved ore zone delineation when compared to techniques which maintained uniform drill spacing.

"Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR), a satellite-based remote sensing technique, has application for monitoring subsidence with high resolution over short periods. DInSAR uses radar images to measure centimeter-level surface displacements. In the images, ground resolution can be relatively high, with each data point (pixel) representing the average displacement over an area of several square meters. The image data are acquired regularly which allows subsidence to be monitored sequentially over short periods; imaging periods typically range from weeks to months.Monitoring subsidence over short periods with high spatial resolution has potential to provide insight into the dynamics of subsidence and into relationships between mine advance and subsidence. In this study, for three longwall mines in the western United States, initial subsidence occurring at the start of longwall advance is quantified over short periods (12 to 72 days). C-band interferometric wide swath Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images from the Sentinel satellites are used to quantify the subsidence. Overall, the data show initial development of subsidence, expansion of the subsidence trough, and the advance of subsidence in the direction of mining.INTRODUCTIONApplied Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR)Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) is a satellite-based remote sensing technique that can be used to quantify small displacements of the Earth’s surface. Using data from the Seasat satellite, which was launched in 1978 (Jet Propulsion Laboratory, 2018), studies by Goldstein, Zebker, and Werner (1988) and by Gabriel, Goldstein, and Zebker (1989) applied Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry to topographic mapping and displacement monitoring. These studies established the potential for broader applications of radar interferometry. Studies by Foxall, Sweeney, and Walter (1998), Wright and Stow (1999), and Carnec and Delacourt (2000) represent some of the earliest evaluations of DInSAR for mine subsidence monitoring. All three of the studies demonstrated the application of DInSAR for quantifying mine subsidence. The Dew Chemical Company has been engaged in explosives research since 1953. The incentive for this research was based on the desire to find additional markets and uses for magnesium metal of which Dow is a heavy producer. The thermodynamic calculations for explosives incorporating light metals indicate energies approximately twice that of non-metallized explosives currently being used. Early in 1960, we acquired additional patent rights from independent inventors and decided to set up a development station at Virginia, Minnesota, to conduct a commercial testing and market evaluation program with this new product. The actual manufacturing of the explosive was to take place in the bore holes. Due to the complexities involved in controlling the manufacture of the explosive in the bore hole, performance was sometimes in doubt. Furthermore, our experience indicated that the metallized explosive systems could not be evaluated by the standard laboratory methods then being used, and it was necessary for us to look for more suitable research methods. Tests were conducted on several known methods for explosive evaluation. The most promising were the Navy underwater method for energy evaluation, and a modified Livingston crater method intended to compare explosive performance in rock. After shooting over two thousand charges of eight to 60 pounds under water and in taconites and granites with many types of explosives, we have developed a metallized explosive which is now being manufactured at a pilot plant in Virginia, Minnesota, and is being evaluated commercially.

The objective of this work was to assess the influence of parameters such as residence time, solid content, and temperature in a process route towards purified rare earth liquor which could be adequate to produce marketable rare earth products. The steps of the process route proposed in this study comprised water leaching of a sulfated rare earth ore and removal of impurities through the purification of the rare earth sulfuric liquor, which is the product of the water leaching step. The sample used in the water leaching experiments was a sulfated rare earth ore produced by the reaction of a beneficiated rare earth ore with sulfuric acid followed by roasting at 700 °C for 2 h in a muffle furnace and cooling at 20 °C. The water leaching experiments showed that the best condition comprised a residence time of 30 min, temperature of 20 °C, and solid content of 10% w/w, resulting in a recovery of 71.3% of the rare earth elements (REE) and a lower impurity extraction, e.g., only 15.0% of Fe, representing the main impurity in the rare earth ore. Even when presenting low amounts of impurities, the rare earth sulfuric liquor still needed to be purified before it can be used in the production of marketable rare earth products. In the study, the rare earth sulfuric liquors were purified in two consecutive neutralization steps, first by dosing the limestone pulp to pH up to 3.5 and secondly by adding the lime pulp to raise the pH from 3.5 to 5.0. The application of two consecutive purification steps at 20 °C resulted in the highest overall REE recoveries (65.4%) throughout all the steps of the process, being 71.3% in the water leaching, 99.6% in the partial purification with limestone pulp, and 92.1% in the purification with lime pulp at 20 °C. Under this condition, there was a total elimination of Fe, P, and Th and a significant reduction in the Al, U, and sulfate concentrations in the purified rare earth liquor. The purified rare earth liquor attained through the experiment is expected to be amenable to be used in the production of marketable products due to the lower impurities/REO mass ratios.
