This paper presents talc milling guided by a theme of "So You Want to Be In The Talc Business". Such a theme strikes a cautionary note to warn the uninitiated of potential pitfalls, and this paper will cover briefly some of the technical traps as well as one of the larger talc milling operations. It is important to our purpose to pre- sent some of the market and mineral complications that make the business of producing and selling industrial talcs much more intricate than an outsider would perceive. Metal markets by comparison are great worldwide pools into which production streams of generally identical metals can flow over a weir of market prices. Industrial talc markets are not as well defined and often must be developed by the producer working closely with a specific customer or groups of customers to prove out the attributes of the specific product from a new property. All the negatives of a new market seem to work against the introductory talc in the forms of industry or customer reluctance to change, sales prices, cost of delivery, mode of transportation, health considerations of the minerals and many more. Just locating the potential customers for a new industrial talc may be a substantial undertaking. Thus, an analogy of the worldwide metal market might compare starting a new talc operation to trying to gather up enough fallen rain drops to be able to start a production stream of a worthwhile size.

Geological domain modeling is an important step in mineral resources evaluation. The procedure can be laborious and time-consuming, especially in multivariate settings. However, estimates are significantly improved when carefully limited by geological variables. This paper proposes a workflow for geological domain modeling suited for stratigraphic deposits. The workflow consists in automatically defining the domains by using clustering algorithms, generating the surfaces that represent the contacts by interpolation and subsequent triangulation, and simulating the surfaces. The proposed workflow produces consistent and realistic results and allows the user to test different domain configurations and assess volumetric uncertainty automatically and quickly.

Flow models are used to predict the extraction efficiency of metals in rock piles. These models typically use hydraulic parameters obtained through column studies, which assume that the material in the column wholly represents the entire pile and the parameters can be upscaled several orders of magnitude for model evaluation. This assumption fails for parameters that are spatially variable or scale dependent. To overcome these issues, measurements made directly on the heap at the appropriate model scale can be made with the electrical resistivity method. The method aims to map the variations in the electrical resistivity, which can be associated with moisture content, degree of fines, metal content, and leachate concentration. We present an example of calibrating the resistivity with borehole measurements of moisture using geostatistics to show how the resistivity method can be used to obtain a spatial moisture distribution. It was shown that cokriging the resistivity and moisture together gives a more reliable distribution.

Despite the apparently unflattering term filler, this group of industrial materials has become an essential component of many industrial products with varying degrees of sophistication. Mineral fillers are, by definition, inert materials included in a composition for some useful purpose. Included in this broad category are asbestos, barite, bentonite, natural calcium carbonates (limestone), clays, diatomite, feldspar, micas, silica, talc, and other industrial minerals. Also included in this category are synthetic mineral- derived materials such as aluminum hydrate, precipitated calcium carbonate, and pyrogenic and precipitated silicas and silicates. Mineral fillers are included in compounds to accomplish a variety of final results. Inclusion of fillers modifies physical characteristics such as hardness, brittleness, impact strength, compressive strength, surface texture, fire resistance, softening point, and electrical conductivity. Depending upon the performance characteristics of the particular filler used and the quantity of the usage (i.e., percentage added), these materials can enhance the physical and optical properties, price-performance, and appearance of the finished products. These enhancements in properties of the finished compounds are the result of properties of the fillers including chemical activity, purity, hardness, particle size, particle shape, particle size distribution, surface structure, color, density, and refractive index. This chapter will review the general usage of fillers, the rationale for their use, trends, and economic factors influencing those trends. Major using industries will be examined in detail with extensive discussion of major fillers used in those industries. The reader is referred to the appropriate commodity chapter for specific information on deposits and processing for industrial minerals. All of these same filler materials have additional significant uses based on their chemical composition or other characteristics. Cross-references for these will be found in other use chapters and summarized in commodity chapters. The chart in Table 1, updated from the 5th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks, illustrates the major mineral fillers (both natural and synthetic) and their more important end uses.

In 1973 the percentage of total coal production mined by surface methods in the United States again increased, reflecting a long term trend. Barely three decades ago less than 10 percent of the U.S. coal was produced in this manner. Last year surface coal mines produced 299 million tons, 50.7 percent of our nation's coal. At present there are about 2450 strip mines producing coal in 23 states. While accident rates for surface coal mines are less than underground coal mining rates, surface coal mining is certainly one of the more hazardous occupations. Figure 1 shows the injury rates (fatal and non-fatal accidents) of major U.S. industries. Note that surface coal mining is more hazardous than all other industries except contract construction. Accident rates are about the same as the contract construction industry which uses similar equipment. A limited amount of detailed data was available on elements of surface coal mining jobs and this lack of compiled information made it difficult to assess the significance of the conditions contributing to accidents and to make recommendations that would reduce accident frequency. Therefore as part of the Bureau of Mines continuing research efforts related to the health and safety of the coal miner, a contract was awarded to Theodore Barry and Associates of Los Angeles to conduct an "Industrial Engineering Study of Hazards Associated with Surface Coal Mines."

Traditional methods of creating a water tight shaft liner involve the use of segmented or welded steel. When shafts are located in ground that exhibits extremely difficult conditions of high water inflow and hydraulic pressure, composite liners are often combined with ground freezing during construction. The authors were searching for a cost effective and more flexible solution to hydrostatic liners design than the traditional concrete/steel composite design used so far. Searching through new technologies developed for tunneling applications, sprayed on membranes systems seemed very promising but were not developed for the specific circumstances encountered in shaft sinking applications where ground freezing is involved. Even though freezing is a very effective technique, it creates adverse temperature conditions for the application of spray on membranes. In addition, application and hydrating cure times for those membranes products ranged between six to twenty-four hours under ideal conditions (usually temperatures well above freezing point), which eliminated them from consideration in a shaft sinking cycle. While researching different spray on membrane materials, it was discovered that Stirling Lloyd Polychem Ltd. has developed and proven a different membrane material for waterproofing liners in different tunneling applications. The characteristics of the membrane exceeds the pressure parameters encountered in frozen shaft sinking operations, and the chemical cure times were reduced to one hour per layer which worked well into the shaft sinking cycle times. More over their system included a quality control procedure that allowed insuring integrity of the membrane at application time, a very desirable feature for shaft liner construction. However, the frozen rock surface still presented an unknown in the cure time and stability equation. As all membrane products a shotcrete substrate is usually required prior to application. The hypothesis used by the author was to use this shotcrete layer, not only as a substrate, but also as a thermal insulation against the frozen rock and the membrane during both application and curing time. The authors knew from experience that shotcrete could be applied successfully over frozen rock. But the shotcrete temperature curve over time was unknown and no information were found in the available literature. Testing was required to determine whether a suitable mix of shotcrete could be applied to the frozen shaft wall to provide enough heat of hydration for a suitable period of time to create conditions suitable for membrane application and curing.

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), commonly known as black lung, is caused by the inhalation of respirable coal mine dust and is a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease with no cure. Historically, CWP has taken a tremendous human and financial toll on the U.S. coal mining industry. Recent health surveillance data indicate that CWP continues to occur at elevated levels. Respirable coal dust exposure must be controlled to prevent the development of CWP. The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts laboratory and mine-site research to identify control technologies that can be used to successfully reduce respirable dust levels. Various technologies, using multiple methods of control, can be applied to reduce dust levels. An overview of CWP’s impact and a general methodology for controlling respirable dust in underground coal mines are discussed in this paper.

Differential flotation of bulk sulfide concentrates from Duluth gabbro into copper and nickel concentrates could be implemented by first destroying the hydrophobic coating with ozone and then by recovering the copper concentrate with a copper-selective collector. A number of parameters involved in the use of ozone; such as the sequence and the conditioning time of ozone treatment, the pulp pH, and the level of xanthate addition, were investigated.

Solvent Extraction (SX) technology has undergone significant refinements including outright process changes to achieve greater copper production rates with lower organic entrainment levels. LIGHTNIN has completed a detailed study aimed at improving on the conventional Holmes & Narver and Davy Power Gas type impeller designs1 by optimizing the mixing through the use of high efficiency pumper turbines instead of making system changes as others are doing. Since each individual installation requires a different design head and flow, LIGHTNIN has developed the R320 "family" of high efficiency, curved blade pumper turbines. These impellers are designed to maximize head and flow while reducing entrainment through lower power consumption, less shear generation and turbulence, elimination of air incorporation, production of the optimum droplet distribution, and lower tip speeds. These improvements also maintain the required mass transfer and copper recovery of the traditional impeller designs. The R320 impeller benefits have been quantified using Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) and proven in multiple domestic and foreign installations at flow rates exceeding 15,000 GPM. Design comparisons of this improved impeller type versus traditional technology impellers in head, flow, power and entrainment are presented for review. In addition, the inherent benefits of axial flow, high efficiency impellers like the A3 1 0 and A6000 in auxiliary mix chambers will be discussed. The high flow, low shear characteristics of these patented impellers provide the necessary dispersion stability for mass transfer while speeding phase disengagement in the settlers due to low power and low shear input.

PRINCIPLES OF MAGNETIC SEPARATION The application of magnetic separators relies on the different behavior of individual mineral particles under the influence of magnetic forces. When exposed to a magnetic field, all materials are affected in some way. According to whether materials are attracted or repelled by the magnetic field, they are designated paramagnetic or diamagnetic, respectively. Paramagnetic materials are attracted along lines of magnetic force from points of lower magnetic field intensity to points of higher magnetic field intensity. The very strong response of some materials to a magnetic field is sometimes designated ferromagnetic and the particles attracted frequently retain magnetic properties after the applied magnetic field is removed. Diamagnetic materials are repelled along the lines of magnetic force from points of high magnetic intensity to points of lower field intensity. Only limited commercial use of diamagnetic effects has been made. For practical applications, the paramagnetic groupings are: 1. Strongly magnetic (ferromagnetic) 2. Magnetic 3. Weakly Magnetic 4. Non-magnetic The limits of these groupings are not well defined and will vary in some mineral species. Only a few minerals are ferromagnetic (magnetite is an example) and arbitrarily some investigators have selected 10,000 gauss, or 1 Telsa, as the dividing line between low and high intensity magnetic fields. I. S. Wells has developed a table indicating the magnetic intensity required to separate a selected grouping of minerals which is shown in Table 1 on page 2. A similar table has been developed by Carpco Inc. of Jacksonville, Florida in conjunction with the use of its high tension separators. This table, Table 2 on page 3 shows other minerals grouped in the broader categories cited above. Mine planners are under pressure to evaluate the impact of changing economic times and newly acquired data on their mine plans. Incorporating changes such as commodity prices, customer sales, fluctuating cost assumptions and newly acquired geologic data requires quick turnaround for model building and planning to keep mine plans on pace with changes as they occur. Because of the length of time required to perform some of the geologic modeling and mine planning tasks, planning frequency may not be keeping pace with the frequency of change. To meet these challenges, one leading North American mining company successfully increased the frequency rate and accuracy of its mine plans to stay current with incoming data, ensuring its mine plans reflect the latest information, thereby minimizing or eliminating production cost variance.

"The development of fracture zones in surrounding rock mass has significant impact on the stability of underground mine roadways. Detection of the fracture zones is of compelling importance for maintaining roadway stability as well as for safe and speedy excavation of the roadways. This paper presents a study conducted at Dong Bao Wei underground coal mine, where the roadways were developed in diabase rock mass. The roadways suffered severe damages, including sloughing and excessive floor heaving. The borehole imaging technique was applied in the study to observe and detect fracture zone development surrounding the roadway openings. Based on the borehole imaging studies, new roadway support systems were proposed to improve the stability. INTRODUCTION At the Dong Bao Wei Coal Mine three main roadways of the west wing were excavated. The three roadways had semicircle arch cross sections and were at a depth of 650 meters, each being about 750 meters in length. The roadways were driven through a section of thick diabase intrusion, which was softened by water with reduced strength and may turn into powder form under weathering. Site investigation indicated that the roadways in diabase intrusion zone were badly damaged due to severe deformation, and very serious roadway sidewall sloughing and spalling accompanied by severe floor heave often occurred.(Figures 1 and 2) In order to ensure the normal use of the roadway, undercuts were excavated. However, this operation seriously affected the roadway construction progress and increased the amount of roadway support operations as well as the roadway maintenance costs. Furthermore, a roof fall accident occurred in nearby drilling site. The investigation indicated insufficient support provided for the roadways which imposed significant safety hazards and would have serious impact to mining production and subsequent mining activities.The support of the main roadways is a critical task and is the focus of the underground opening excavation work at the mine, since more than 40 years of service life is required from these main roadways. For these roadways, large cross sections with high degree of stability and minimal amount of deformation should be maintained. Therefore, providing sufficient and appropriate roadway supports is of significant importance to the coal mine. In this paper, in order to optimize the roadway supporting system, studies were carried out on the geological structures, lithological characters, roof bolt anchoring features and suitable anchoring layers. The studies were aimed at ensuring the stability of mine roadways, reducing the roadway maintenance costs and providing a safe mine passageway for orderly production and progressive development of the mine"

An 81 hectare (200 acre) tailings impoundment at a taconite operation in Wyoming that ceased operations in 1983 has been a source of blowing dust. The site qualified for reclamation under Wyoming's Abandoned Mine Land (AML) reclamation program. The ultimate reclamation construction included: incorporating commercially available organic amendments and fertilizers into a 300 mm (12 in) thick "cap" of a sterile clay loam cover material, lowering the water level in an adjacent flooded mine pit that was feeding uncontrolled seeps into the tailings basin, constructing a wide tailings pond spillway that allows flood control while minimizing seasonal water level fluctuations in the pond, and building rock berms and rock snow fences for wind erosion control and soil moisture preservation. Tree planting in the protective wind/snow shadows of rock berms and rock snow fences, and the plugging of a decant pipe are planned for future work.

An effective maintenance program ensures the adequate availability of production equipment. In turn, this availability enables production to maximize utilization and successfully meet production targets. An overall production strategy is necessary to draw all departments toward this common effort. Only then will production targets be met. From the maintenance view this means that production must comply with PM and repair schedules. Purchasing must supply parts and materials on time. Mine engineering must not overwhelm maintenance with non-vital construction. Accounting must provide correct, timely cost information - - etc. This strategy - - its content, effectiveness and enforcement is the responsibility of the mine manager . . . his alone. This paper describes a successful approach to maintenance within this strategy.

In 1986 the city of Johannesburg celebrates its first century of existence. The fact that the city was founded to exploit the gold deposits which underlaid it, prompts this review of the gold process development in the mining industry of South Africa. Clearly a complete history of, the gold recovery process to date is not called for and it is proposed therefore to outline the most significant developments which have taken place since the middle 1930's, that is to say the last 50 years or so. Prior to this period the industry had seen the development of comminution processes employing cone crushing in closed circuit with vibrating screens followed by grinding in rotating mills and the gradual disappearance of stamp mills. The all sliming process was well established as a viable route and continuous dewatering in thickeners, continuous leaching and filtration were serious rivals for the earlier batch processes. Continuous processes for gravity concentration had also been developed and the recovery of gold from pregnant solutions employed cementation on zinc dust as opposed to shavings. Thus at the beginning of the half century under review the industry had adopted, or started to adopt, many of the processes still accepted as modern practice. However in some areas little change was evident this was especially so in the smelthouse where some thirty more years were to elapse before the hand stoked coal fired calcine and reverbatory furnaces were replaced by more environmentally acceptable electric furnaces. The most significant feature in recent history has been the mining of progressively lower grades of ore and the retreatment of tailings from earlier operations, much of the latter comprising tailings only a decade or even less in age. Notable among these operations are those on the East Rand near Springs in the Transvaal, in the Orange Free State at Welkom and more recently, massive reclamation of tailings close to the city centre itself. The carbon in pulp (CIP) process has been much publicised in recent years and all new plants erected during the 1980's have adopted this route for gold recovery. However the major proportion of tonnage milled in the industry is still subjected to the more traditional process of liquid solids separation by vacuum filtration. A review of the history of boosters is given with examples of the prominent types that have been made commercially. The performance and design features of protected core boosters are discussed in detail. A new gel booster is discussed with its advantages to the mining industry. Booster size, hole configuration, performance and safety aspects are reviewed. Important features of boostering in above ground and underground blasting are related to an economic analysis. This presentation will cover different types of boosters commonly used in mining. However, for the purpose of this paper a few terms need to be defined to clarify the action of different parts of a priming system. Booster* - "Any unit of explosive or blasting agent to be used in a charged hole for the purpose of perpetuating or intensifying the initial detonation". Primer* - "A unit, package or cartridge' of explosives containing a detonator or detonating cord which is used to transmit detonation to other explosives or blasting agents". Detonator - A device for initiating a detonation from a flame or a small electric current, the former being represented by a fuse cap and the latter an electric blasting cap.

An underground limestone mine in eastern Ohio was experiencing significant floor heave and roof falls, attributed to high horizontal stresses. Areas of the mine showing floor heave were monitored with roof-to-floor extensometers and photogrammetry surveys to determine the rate and magnitude of heave. Extensometer data were recorded hourly at four locations across adjacent entries while photogrammetry surveys of the floor were performed at the same locations every two to five weeks. A final survey was performed using an I-Site 8200 laser scanner. Following instrumentation, floor heave up to 10.1 cm (4 in.) was measured by the extensometers, photogrammetric reconstructions and laser scanner over a six-month period. The extensometers were biased by the location where they were placed, failing to consistently capture the location and extent of floor heave and cracking. The photogrammetry surveys were not precise enough to capture small magnitude movements. Mining in the area was halted and within several months the floor movement and incidence of roof falls were significantly lessened.

Semimobile in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) systems can help reduce truck haulage in openpit mines by bringing the crusher closer to the excavation areas. Optimizing a production schedule with semimobile IPCC requires integrating extraction sequence, destination policy, crusher relocation, conveyor layout and truck fleet investment decisions. A mining complex with multiple mines and IPCC systems should be optimized simultaneously to find an optimal schedule for the entire value chain. An integrated stochastic optimization framework is proposed to produce long-term production schedules for mining complexes using multiple semimobile IPCC systems. The optimization model has flexibility to select the crusher locations and conveyor routes from anywhere inside the pits. The framework uses simulated orebody realizations to consider multielement grade uncertainty and manage associated risk. A hybrid metaheuristic solution approach based on simulated annealing and evolutionary algorithms is implemented. The method is demonstrated using an iron ore mining complex

P.T. Freeport Indonesia currently operate a 600,000 t/d mining and 125,000 t/d milling operation in the remote highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The isolated location and generally difficult working conditions make for challenges not encountered in most North American operations. In spite of this, the mill technical groups have been able to develop and maintain a highly effective level of plant wide automation. This has been achieved through the appropriate selection of available technologies and the implementation of innovative management practices. This paper provides an overview of the control systems currently installed and focuses on those practices which have resulted in the long term success of process control at Freeport.
