A spectrophotometric study of xanthate solutions alone and their mixtures with equimolar amounts of alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CnTAB) has established the additivity of ultraviolet spectra (190 - 400 my) for potassium ethyl xanthate (KEtX) and C12TAB. No obvious effect of C12TAB addition on the decomposition rate of KEtX was observed. The kinetics of collector abstraction by copper, nickel and sphalerite powders were studied in 10-5 - 10-3M solutions of KEtX alone and in equimolar mixtures of KEtX and C12TAB. Presence of C12TAB caused a 2 - 3 fold increase in the amounts of xanthate (equivalent to many monolayers) abstracted by copper and, nickel powders but had no effect on the abstraction of xanthate by unactivated sphalerite. The adsorption of C12TAB itself from the mixed solutions was very low, at most ore monolayer only, and was not influenced by the nature of the solid powder used. The results are interpreted in terms of molecular associations and synergistic action of xanthates and quaternary amines.

LIX® 34 liquid ion exchange reagent, one of a totally new class of metal extractants, is discussed in terms of its properties. Specifically, these properties include improved selectivity for copper and greater recovery. Some comparisons to the well known General Mills' LIX® 64N have been made. Particular emphasis is given to treating solutions containing very low copper values and high impurity levels.

Refractory ores and concentrates containing silver tend to form Ag-jarosite during autoclave oxidation. Silver extraction from the oxidation products is therefore low, unless a hot lime treatment step to decompose Ag-jarosite precedes cyanidation. Since silver iodide is very stable but soluble in cyanide solutions, the formation and decomposition of Ag-jarosite in the presence of iodine species was studied. Results indicate that Ag-jarosite formation could be prevented in favour of H3O-jarosite and AgI while oxidizing Ag2S under industrial autoclaving conditions, when the total iodine species to Ag mole ratio exceeded 5. Lower ratios gave proportionally more Ag-jarosite and less AgI. Under these conditions existing Ag-jarosite was also found to decompose in H30-jarosite and AgI.

The advent of larger quantities of -1/4 inch coal in the raw feed to the preparation plant and the necessity of recovering this material has made the problem of meeting product moisture specifications more difficult. For a number of years thermal dryers have been used advantageously as a means of reducing fine coal moisture content where the over-all economics would justify such an installation. However, these units are not without their drawbacks because of high capital and operating costs, safety hazards and possible degradation of the product, and thus an alternative method of moisture reduction is highly desirable. After the various mechanical variables associated with filtration have been optimized, an examination of theory shows that surface tension and liquid viscosity are the only two remaining variables which might be altered to reduce moisture content.

The research is located within Asuncion and Cospan districts, which according to their geological features in contrast with previous studies pointing out Au, Mo and Pb anomalies create an environment of prospective interest. The objective is to use ASTER Satellite Images to identify ore-bearing hydrothermal alteration zones. To do this, processing techniques such as the combination of bands by RGB 943 and 461, band ratio 4/6, 4/5, 5/8 and 2/1 to identify advanced argillic, argillic to phyllic and propylitic alterations. In addition, indices defined by Ninomiya were used as a third technique in order to reinforce the data obtained from the previous techniques. The results in the study area are confirmed by the SAM spectral mapping technique using spectral signatures from the USGS library. Identifying kaolinite, alunite and pyrophyllite, assemblages of the advanced argillic alteration. Concluding in 3 areas of interest with the band ratios, 5 areas with the Ninomiya indexes and 9 areas validated with SAM, which were contrasted in 13 areas of prospective interest with well-marked argillic alteration.

Current machine learning models used for roof fall hazard prediction are mounted on expensive sensors, computationally expensive, or lack the robustness for accurate prediction in the underground mining environment. This research aims to provide a design methodology for a robust, low-cost, deep learning-based algorithm for underground mine roof fall hazard prediction. A data sampling plan is developed to ensure the replicability and robustness of the developed model. In addition, feature engineering and transformation methods are described to identify relevant features for hazard identification. The methodology described here will be used in model development, tested, and implemented as a real-time mobile device application. The new tool will be expected to detect roof fall hazards in real-time and contribute to a crowdsourcing approach for underground hazard detection.

Impacted waters, often complex, are created in mining which at some point in the mine life cycle will need to be attended. The simplest and most cost effective method of handling impacted water is to reuse it as makeup water for operations. At the end of mine life, operational reuse will not be an option and the impacted water will require treatment to achieve alternative reuse goals. Conventional mine impacted water treatment is successful in removing unwanted constituents but create brine and sludge that may require special handling or additional treatment, resulting in additional liabilities and costs. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold has taken an approach to water treatment that focuses on transformation not concentration. The Water Treatment Test Facility located at Sierrita Mine has three test plants that are piloting the mine impacted water transformation process. Two plants have been designed for the removal of calcium and sulfate with products of gypsum and sulfur. The third plant removes metals from process water and transforms them into marketable metal sulfides. The transformation, rather than concentration, of mine impacted water solutes greatly reduce long term risks.

"INTRODUCTION The Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point (BCP) project, located in the north-east New Territories of Hong Kong, will form the seventh land crossing between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HK) and Shenzhen in China (Figure 1). The BCP project comprises an 11km long dual two-lane trunk road linking the border crossing facility to the existing road infrastructure in HK and when completed it will facilitate future regional development and alleviate frequent traffic congestion at the existing Boarder control points.In December 2013 Dragages Hong Kong (a member of the Bouygues Construction Group) was awarded the 5.4km long Contract 2 section of the project, including the 4.8km long Lung Shan Tunnels, by the Civil Engineering and Development Department of the Government of the HK SAR. To overcome the difficult ground conditions anticipated along the Contract 2 section of the project the tunnels will be constructed using mechanical and drill and blast (D&B) excavation techniques together with a 14.1m diameter multi-mode Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Land constraints imposed on the project alignment require that the final 500m section at the northern end of the Lung Shan tunnels, under Princess Hill (Figure 2), takes an almost 90 degree turn towards the north. The resulting 354m radius curve restricts the sight-line of road users to below the minimum 110m at 80km/hr hence, the internal span of the tunnels needs to be increased from 12.6m, in the standard straight section, to 15.4m in this curved section to accommodate a widened shoulder which will provide the required sight-line distance."

Why complicate an already complex machine such as a continuous miner by adding roof drills? Immediate permanent roof support is an immediate thought of the mining engineer just as elimination of frequent time-consuming places changes is a thought of the methods engineer. The realization of those two objectives has the potential for improved safety with increased production is the thought of the general manager. Miner-Bolters Used a Generation Ago These are not new thoughts as the 1CM continous miner equipped with two integral roof drills was introduced twenty-five years ago. Approximately two hundred of these machines were sold in the next five years for use in medium and high seam operations. The 1CM miner chassis that remained stationary in the center of an entry or room while the ripper bar was swung and sumped hydraulically provided an ideal platform for mounting two roof drills that could be operated during the continuous miner's production cycle. Two roof bolts could normally be installed in less time than required for the mining cycle. A typical roof drill unit is shown in Figure I.

Epithermal vein systems are often modeled as simple, discrete high grade structures within low grade host rock. However, geologic setting and structural preparation influence how such vein systems form. In structurally complex areas, veins may follow several structural trends and occur on a variety of scales. Geologic and grade modeling within such complex structural regimes can be difficult as individual veins cannot be delineated from host rock based on grade alone. Structurally complex areas require a different approach than traditional discrete vein modeling. Presented herein is a study of a structurally complex area that hosts vein mineralization to be mined underground. All veins could not be modeled discretely, so an alternate approach was needed. Major structures were modeled using surface and underground mapping and were then used to create a structural trend for the area. This trend was used to guide 3D grade shell construction. The grade shells replaced 3D vein solids for grade estimation in order to mitigate the influence of high grade samples. Structurally guided grade shell construction offers a more effective modeling method than discrete vein modeling in deposits that are structurally complex.

The quality of our environment is of great importance to all of us. Today, there is a great public concern about the degradation of our air, land, and water and the resultant slow death of our planet Earth. The miner has always been concerned with his environment. Historically, mining has been a part of the frontier. As a result, the miner has pioneered and developed many parts of the world. In the beginning, he had to hack out a place for his mine, himself, and his family. He was given accolades and praise for his accomplishments. Now, however, he is attacked as a ravager of the landscape. It was and is no different on the Marquette Iron Range in Marquette County, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Iron ore was discovered in 1845 and mining was begun by 1848. Over nearly 1 ¼ centuries, a total of 379,197,000 tons have been shipped to market. Ports, docks, railroads, and towns all had to be built in order to get that tonnage out to iron and steel makers. In those early days the environment had to be mastered, not pampered.

"The U.S. stone industry is in a transition from surface quarries to single and multiple level underground stone mines. The factors driving this transition include surface quarries; ? reaching their economic stripping ratio, ? encroaching on the mineral reserve boundary where the remaining reserves are below the active pit, ? dust, noise, and blast vibration concerns as suburban neighborhoods and development move into formerly rural areas. Ground control is critical to the success of a safe and productive, mining operation. The primary focus of the ground control engineer in an underground stone mine is the stability of the roof or back, development and benched pillar stability, stability of the sill pillar between vertically adjacent mining levels, and floor stability. Roof stability begins with the selection of a stable back horizon based upon the presence of a thin shale parting, stylolite, or other discontinuities from which the production shot can easily ""peel"" away leaving a stable back stratum. Room width and the decision of whether to bolt the roof, the bolt length, bolt type, bolt diameter, and spacing of the support is controlled by the thickness, fracture spacing, jointing, and material properties of the back strata. Horizontal stress controls the header and crosscut azimuth as to avoid driving perpendicular to the maximum horizontal stress direction. Stable pillar dimensions depend upon the interaction of the; ? vertical stress resulting from overburden thickness and multiple level interaction of overlying level(s), ? mining height during development and the final mining height after floor shots are taken while benching, ? presence of faults, folds, or joints passing through the pillar, and ? stone lithology recognizing that the presence of oolitic bands, shale partings, and bentonite beds create zones of weakness that can destabilize an otherwise competent pillar. Floor stability is typically not a significant issue for underground stone mines because the bearing capacity of the stone exceeds the vertical pressure transferred through the pillar. However, floor heave can be a ground control issue where shale partings, moisture sensitive strata, weak stone bands, or horizontal stress is present. Roof stability and pillar stability problems can be initiated as the floor heave enables the pillar and roof to settle. The ground control issues for underground stone mines are most clearly presented through a series of case histories. The case histories presented in this paper are a mix of ground failures and successful mining. The focus is on the geotechnical data required for underground stone mine ground control for roof, pillar, and floor design and stability analysis."

INTRODUCTION The Magma mine, located at Superior, AZ, some 100 km (60 miles) east of Phoenix, was discovered in 1875, and was originally mined for silver. The property was acquired by W. B. Thompson who formed the Magma Copper Co. in 1910. Prior to 1965, square-set mining and cut-and-fill methods were used to mine steeply dipping veins at Magma. Ore was moved to the chute by gravity in the square-set stopes and by slusher in the cut-and-fill stopes. The stopes were gobbed with waste from the surface and development headings in the mine. The original square-set method of mining was modi¬fied in order to extract replacement ore bodies in limestones that dipped at 0.52 rad (30°) and varied in thick¬ness from 4.6 to 38 m (15 to 125 ft). Mining of these ore bodies was done by starting at the upper lateral ex¬tremities and retreating to the access openings. The timber square sets and cribbing were used as temporary support, the ground being allowed to cave as the mining retreated. It was found, however, that mining in such a manner was very inefficient; safety hazards increased be¬cause of the blocky and fractured characteristics of the ore and the weakness of the hanging wall. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining is now the primary stoping method used at Magma, and no pillars are left for later extraction. Four ore bodies are pres¬ently being mined. These ore bodies (see Fig. 1) dip conformably at 0.52 rad (30°) to the east with the host limestone and shale sediments, their average strike length is about 122 m (400 ft), and their thickness varies from 9 to 38 m (30 to 125 ft). The ore bodies are separated by varying thicknesses of barren rock. Three of them come together at various elevations primarily in the area of the main feeder fault, but there is an apparent horizontal displacement of about 23 m (75 ft) on the main feeder fault which complicates stope layout. The method as originally applied has been modified in order to mine more efficiently ore bodies that are 9 m (30 ft) or more in thickness. The modification was made to mine all the ore at a given elevation before dropping down for the cut below. The advantage of this is that mining is done on a horizontal plane and there¬fore muck removal can be mechanized. Also multiple faces are made available, thereby improving overall min¬ing efficiency. Another major change made was to carry a 6.7-m (22-ft) face when mining the top sill and a 6.4-m (21-ft) face when mining under fill rather than the former standard 3.35-m (11-ft) high face. This change lengthens the mining cycle and cuts mat prepa¬ration costs in half. Stopes are laid out (see Fig. 2) so that maximum mining panels are available and yet one stope crew will not tie up too much of the ore reserve. One stope might consist of as many as 20 panels, and these panels are divided evenly on opposite sides of the extraction cross¬cut. The stope layout is planned so that the maximum tramming distance to the orepass will not exceed 30.5 m (100 ft) on the crosscut and 38 m (125 ft) in the panel. Many underground metal/nonmetal mines are using enclosed cabs on mining equipment to reduce the exposure of miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM). However, some enclosed cab systems may not be meeting their expected efficiency in capturing DPM, which could be a result of inappropriate filter use, cab leaks or insufficient pressurization. NIOSH investigated several types of filters for reducing DPM to determine which type had the best capture efficiency. The laboratory results indicated that a MERV 8 (minimum efficiency reporting value, as defined by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air- Conditioning Engineers) filter captured about 50% of the DPM, a MERV 16 filter collected 96-98% of the DPM and two HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) grade filters captured over 99% of the DPM. NIOSH also performed a field study to measure the efficiency of two cabs at a limestone mine. The cab filtration systems of a loader and haul truck were found to be over 90% effective in removing DPM, except under certain operating conditions when the efficiency was as low as 41%. A possible reason for the low efficiencies is an open window in the cab, but more studies need performed to obtain a better understanding of the cause and solution of the problem.

Crushed stone operations have become more difficult due to rising costs of labor and equipment, with the consequent reduction in profit margins. Competition from other operators and the encroachment of vertically integrated companies place severe restrictions on available markets. The seasonal demand for stone precludes any definite production level, and changes in productivity have to be accommodated. These influence profitability, and therefore production plans must be continuously adjusted to keep pace with rapidly changing conditions. The basic problem of stone companies seeking to maximize profits is one of balancing stone production costs, costs of inventory holding and stock-piling, marketing costs and any other charges accruing over time against the selling price of stone. Because of high peak demands, slack period production must be stored and then distributed to supplement peak period production. For a multi-plant operation, there is a need to evaluate at the same time the interaction between the plants and the various marketing sectors. In a multi-plant operation with different production capacities and production costs, stone producers are interested in the answers to the following questions: 1. How much stone should be produced at each plant in each time period? 2. What should be the optimum stone shipment from each plant to each market? 3. What are the effects on net returns and shipping plans, if production capacities are altered at the plants? These questions have many different answers that, will satisfy demands. From the point of production scheduling, the minimum production cost may be the objective. From the inventory standpoint, the best solution will be to synchronize production with sales. However, when the transportation of stone is also considered, the desired end is to achieve that delivered cost which maximizes the company f s net return. Large surface mining projects in sparsely populated regions of the West have the potential to create disruptions in an area's social and economic character with potential effects on man that can far outweigh the physical and ecological effects on man's environment. The data and analyses involved in addressing the socioeconomic issues are additional to those traditionally associated with surface coal mining, such as those concerning land reclamation and water quality. Appropriate socioeconomic studies in conjunction with mine-planning can identify the potential problem areas in order that project measures can be taken to maximize the beneficial impacts and minimize the adverse effects of surface coal mining. The information required to conduct such socioeconomic analyses, available data sources, and the applicable analyses are described. Overall impacts of some proposed Western surface mines are summarized and potential mitigating steps discussed.

The Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty acid flotation of phosphate minerals from siliceous ores. The process takes advantage of preferential adsorption and high reactivity of fatty acid collectors towards apatite over silica surfaces under slightly acidic conditions of pH 5-6.5. The process was successful in upgrading various phosphate samples from Florida and North Carolina containing 7.7-15.3% P205 and 62.3- 77.2% Insol to concentrates assaying 28.1-33.1 % P205 and 4.1-9.9% Insol with high P2O5 recovery of 81.8-92.2%. Depending on the type of silica impurities present one or more cleaning steps, with or without sodium silicate, would be required to improve the grade of the rougher phosphate concentrate.

Nickel ores may be classified into two major categories : sulphide ores, and oxidized lateritic ores, these latter containing nearly 80% of the known reserves of the metal (1). Two types of lateritic ores are recognized; ores high in iron but low in magnesia and silica are known as "limonitic", while ores low in iron but containing high percentages of magnesia and silica are called "silicate" (see Table I). Sulphide ores can be beneficiated readily by conventional ore dressing techniques and the technology for nickel recovery from such ores has been well tested in a number of commercial processes (1-4). Unfortunately, no economically viable process for the concentration of nickel from low-grade deposits has yet been developed, and so only the high grade ores are able to be worked profitably. Silicate ores have been treated pyrometallurgically for the production of ferronickel (2) (3) (5); limonitic ores have been processed hydrometallurgically to produce nickel metal (2) (3) (6) (7).

The demand and supply of wollastonite has gone through a dynamic period in the 1990's. A 10% -15% growth rate of demand stimulated interest in evaluating new projects. However, the mid-1990's brought declining prices for commodity applications and natural barriers to entry for technical applications, making many of these potential projects uneconomic. Successful projects that were brought to market were done so by incumbent producers. This work examines the competitive structure of the wollastonite market by evaluating the strategic decisions of the industry leader, NYCO Minerals Inc., and a new market entrant, Orleans Resources, in an attempt to identify the environmental threats and opportunities of this industry. Results suggest new entrants like Orleans Resources face significant entry barriers for technical applications, while NYCO Minerals could improve its profitability by having less exposure to commodity applications.

Boron, estimated to comprise about 0.001 percent of the earth's crust (Fleischer 10), as an element is never found free in nature, although its compounds are found in many localities. the borates are the most important. Sassolite (B(OH)3) and boracite (Mg6C12B1406), non-borates, are-of-minor importance. The crystal structures of most natural borates are still unknown. A classification based solely on the ratio of boron to the total number of cations has been devised (Palache 28). This classification divides the borates into four, sub-groups; anhydrous borates, hydrated borates, borates containing hydroxyl or halogen and compound borates. Only four or five minerals of the hydrated borates group have ever been used commercially. In more recent years, the sodium borates have comprised all but a 'small fraction of all borates used. Borax, the hydrated borate compound, is the most important of all boron compounds. It has been used so long and so often that the layman often confuses borax and boron and, applies the terms synonymously.
