U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studies show that 43.5% of surveyed coal preparation plant workers had noise exposures exceeding the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration permissible exposure level of 90 dB(A). Sound levels around vibrating screens in these plants often exceed 90 dB(A). NIOSH is currently developing noise controls for horizontal vibrating screens. To characterize noise sources, NIOSH researchers performed sound pressure level (SPL) measurements on a vibrating screen at their Office of Mine Safety and Health Research laboratory in Pittsburgh. The results show that the entire screen contributes to noise below 1 kHz, and the vibration mechanism housings are most significant above 1 kHz. Constrained layer damping (CLD) treatments and an enclosure were used to reduce mechanism housing noise in this range from 1-10 kHz. These were evaluated using sound power level measurements according to ISO 3744. The CLD treatments reduced the A-weighted sound power level by 3.1 dB in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands. A panel-on-frame vibration mechanism enclosure using various types of panels further reduced the A-weighted sound power level from the CLD configuration in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands by 3.7, 4.0, and 3.9 dB for aluminum, steel, and Dynalam™ panels, respectively. The combination yielded a 7 dB reduction from baseline in A-weighted sound power for the same frequency range.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has recently developed a rock mass classification system for evaluating the structural competency of bedded roof strata; the Coal Mine Roof Rating, or CMRR. When compiled with the companion Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet, which is simple to learn and use, CMRR data are a useful tool with applications to longwall gate road pillar design, safety hazard mapping, and artificial roof support analysis. This paper demonstrates these applications under actual conditions found in current U.S. mining operations.

The most complete mining show ever held in the United States and the largest exposition of its kind to be held anywhere in the world in 1988. That's how the American Mining Congress is billing its "MINExpo International '88," to be held April 24-28 at Chicago's McCormick Place, the largest exposition facility in the country. MINExpo International '88 will combine for the first time two previously separate AMC-sponsored shows - the International Coal Show and the International Mining Show. Starting with the 1988 show, MINExpo International will be held every four years. The next show, in 1992, will be held in Las Vegas. The MINExpo in Chicago will feature more than 500 mining equipment and services exhibits covering 3 hm2 (320,000 sq ft) of exhibit space. Exhibitors will display products ranging from small safety devices to large earth-moving equipment. MINExpo is one of the few trade shows selected by the US Department of Commerce for its Foreign Buyer Program. Commerce is working with US embassies around the world to publicize MINExpo and to form delegations of visitors from many countries. Overseas visitors to the show will be assisted at an on-site International Business Center. It will provide currency exchange, translation, and other services to foreign buyers. Registrants at MINExpo will also be able to attend their choice of 27 morning-only program sessions. At these sessions, international mining experts from industry, government, and academe will analyze technical, strategic, and policy matters and discuss the outlook for the industry. "Toward the 21st Century" is the theme of this year's program. The technical workshops and managerial seminars are designed to assist mining executives, engineers, and geologists as well as mine superintendents, managers, and foremen in handling their responsibilities. Based on previous attendance at AMC international mining shows, the association says that more than 25,000 persons are expected to attend the Chicago show. It is expected that approximately 15% of the attendees will be from foreign countries. The Soviet Union will be among those exhibiting at MINExpo. The Russians have leased more than 2.8 dame (3000 sq ft) of space to display their mining machinery and equipment. It is the first time that the Russians have joined in an exhibition of mining equipment in the US. The two largest manufacturers of mining equipment in the Soviet Union, Setmash and Avtoexport, will put on display in Chicago a variety of Russian-made equipment. It will range from 100 t (110 st) heavy-duty dump trucks and diesel engines to drilling, hoisting, and conveying equipment. In addition to some 400 US exhibitors of mining equipment and services at MINExpo, nearly 100 companies will be present from other major mining nations such as Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, the Netherlands, and West Germany. And, for the first time, a Chinese manufacturer will take part in the AMC show, participating with its US marketing partner.

The presence of moderate to high concentrations of colloidal clays in coal preparation plant waters can cause serious operating and economic problems for a coal company. Among the host of possible problems are the following: 1) Poor separation of clays in the plant thickener, resulting in: a) Increased ash in the clean coal. b) Increased specific gravity of the wash water and decreased coal recoveries at the desired quality. c) Increased thickener operating costs in trying to overcome the problem. 2) Decreased solid concentrations in the thickener underflow and increased pumping requirements to meet solids withdrawal requirements.

Old mine workings are found throughout the Western United Sates on lands administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service and private lands. Some of these mine workings date back to the late 1800s. There may be as many as 100,000 sites on lands administered by the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. The U.S. Department of the Interior has worked with the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and western state governments to identify and prioritize these sites on Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service administered lands. This presentation will discuss the accomplishments we have made to date to clean up inactive and abandoned mine sites, focusing primarily on lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management.

A miner working in an underground coal mine with diesel equipment is exposed to a wide array of pollutants from the diesel exhaust. These include CO, CO2, NO, NO2, SO2, diesel-exhaust aerosol, and a variety of hydrocarbon compounds. A quantitative definition of the health risk resulting from these exposures remains elusive, but during the past several years, progress has been made in defining the problem. Results from epidemiological studies by Garshick, et al. (1988); animal inhalation studies by Mauderly, et al. (1986); Iwai, et al. (1986); and Brightwell, et al. (1986); and in vitro studies by Lewtas, et al. (1986), have provided sufficient data for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to recommend that "whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a 'potential occupational carcinogen,' as defined in the Cancer Policy of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration," NIOSH (1988). NIOSH further stated that "though the excess risk of cancer in diesel-exhaust-exposed workers has not been quantitatively estimated, it is logical to assume that reduction in exposure to diesel exhaust in the workplace would reduce the excess risk."

The effect of face resistance on ventilation air leakage through stoppings was measured in a twin development heading. Face resistance was varied by alternately tightening or loosening the face line brattice to change the line brattice leakage. Results indicated that tight brattice lines are necessary to maintain acceptable airflow at the face but result in higher leakage throughout the entire system, reduced overall ventilation efficiency, and higher operating costs. Conversely, a low face resistance which simulated an auxiliary fan/duct system gave reduced stopping leakage losses, higher quantities of air at the last open cross-cut and greater entire system efficiencies

With the advancement of industrial science and technology, more and more catalysts are used. The spent catalysts produced are solid waste products, which cause environmental pollution if they are not treated. At the same time, the spent catalysts contain some precious metals such as platinum in concentrations that are often higher than in their ore resources. Therefore, the recovery of valuable metals in spent catalysts is a hot research topic at present. However, due to the complex structure of the spent catalysts, dealing with them is a lengthy process. The first step of recovery, enrichment of the spent catalyst, becomes particularly important. In this paper, a pressure solution method is investigated for this purpose, in which the alumina carrier is dissolved and platinum is enriched in the leaching residue.

The depletion of bauxite reserves around the world has necessitated the search for viable alternative sources of aluminum. The major non-bauxite source of aluminum is alunite [KAl3 (SO4)2(OH)6]. Lixiviation is the common industrial process to recover aluminum from alunite. Due to the presence of quartz (40%) as the main gangue mineral, this process causes the formation of Sodium aluminosilicate and Potassium aluminosilicate complexes that leads to loss of alunite, and chemical reagents. Thus, pre-concentration of alunite is required to remove the gangue minerals. Because of the low degrees of freedom (DOF) of alunite, froth flotation, as a preconcentration method, is a viable alternative to increase selectivity in downstream processes. In this work, the possibility of Alunite preconcentration with micro flotation and mechanical flotation cells was studied. The influence of type and dosage of collector, pH, solid percent, particles sizes were considered on the flotation. Flotation tests were designed based on Taguchi method, followed by performing based on surface charge differential between alunite and quartz on direct and revers flotation. In the reverse flotation, Ca+ 2 and Ba+ 2 were used to activate the quartz surface. Under optimum conditions of reverse flotation, alunite grade and recovery were 40% and 62.1% respectively. In the direct flotation, the surface of alunite was activated by F- . The grade and recovery were 50 and 89%, respectively.

The iron-ore underground Kiirunavaara mine (Sweden) has been seismically active since 2008. In 2021 the production is on levels 1079 and 1108 m, at the deepest. The seismic activity has changed in character over time with one step change in 2015 when the number of large (ML>2) seismic events increased, and another one when the mine experienced a seismic event with Mw 4.2 in 2020. In 2017, the mine evaluated Hydraulic Fracturing (HF) as a possible mitigation technique for larger seismic events and a one-hole trial was performed. The trial proved promising, and it was decided to go forward with a large-scale trial covering an entire production area in the mine. The large-scale trial consists of 25 fracturing holes, 50 – 100 m long, running along 500 m out of the ~4500 m long orebody and spanning between production levels 1108 m and 1252 m. The fracturing process continued for a year, resulting in ~38,000 seismic events with −3.3<ML<1.4. The breakdown pressure varied between fractures in the same hole as well as between holes in the same area. Average breakdown pressure per hole was between 12 MPa and 50 MPa. The seismic response to HF in 2021 varied greatly from hole to hole and between fractures in the same hole. The variation in response could be related to the geological conditions and the infrastructure, such as large caving ore passes. In this paper some details about the experiments and broad preliminary analysis of the effect of the HF by using seismic source parameters of the induced seismic events are presented: 1) Distribution of seismic activity, 2) the ‘equivalent’ magnitudes for each hole calculated from the cumulative seismic energy and seismic potency released during the fracturing, compared with the local geological conditions; 3) the predominant failure mechanism of the seismic events caused by HF was defined. A difference in the behaviour between larger and smaller events was noticed, as ML>0 events seem to be compression type failures and ML<0 events seem to be related to slip on pre-existing structures. No seismic events related to creation of a new fracture have been identified yet.

Introduction Alumina (aluminum oxide) is the material from which all the world&apos;s aluminum is produced. In the Western World, all the alumina is made from bauxite by the Bayer process. In the nearly 150 years since aluminum was first isolated by Oersted, the metal has grown from a laboratory curiosity to a position of major importance in the world&apos;s commerce. In terms of annual production rates aluminum is first among nonferrous metals. Oersted&apos;s discovery-reduction of aluminum chloride with potas¬sium amalgam-was improved on by Ste. Claire Deville, whose so¬dium amalgam reduction of aluminum chloride led to the commercial production of aluminum in France in 1855. Ste. Claire Deville&apos;s method prevailed until 1886 when Charles Martin Hall and Paul T. Heroult each invented a process for the production of aluminum by the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in molten cryolite. The inven¬tion by Karl Josef Bayer in 1888 of an economical process for making very pure aluminum oxide (alumina) from bauxite established the necessary link between known ores and the Hall-Heroult reduction process. Bayer&apos;s work completed the scientific base-the ore bauxite refined to alumina by the Bayer process (U.S. Patent No. 515,895), the alumina reduced to aluminum in the Hall-Heroult cell (U.S. Patent No. 400,766--upon which today&apos;s aluminum industry is founded. Small-scale production of aluminum in the U.S. began in 1888 utilizing the Hall cell. By 1903, bauxite properties and a Bayer process refining step had been incorporated into the production activities. On this base the aluminum industry in the U.S. has grown at an annual compounded rate of 15%. Since 1946 the annual growth rate has been 10%.1 The rapid growth of the industry is the result of many factors among which are the existence of widespread bauxite ore deposits; a sound and economic production technology; and the properties of the metal-lightness, strength, ductility, good electrical and heat con¬ductivity, and pleasing appearance, which lead to ever greater de¬mands for aluminum in an industrializing society. At the inception of the industry, the only market that could be found for aluminum was in the production of cooking utensils. How¬ ever, the rapidly accelerating industrial and technological development of the Western World soon created new needs for aluminum, and today aluminum is marketed in a broad range of industrial, commer¬cial, and consumer applications. The principal uses for aluminum are:&apos; building and construction, 22%; transportation, 18%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 11%; consumer durables, 10%; machinery and equipment, 7%; other, 19%. The 1974 production of primary alumi¬num in the world was 14.5 million short tons, which at an approximate ingot price of 40¢ per lb puts a value of $11.6 billion on the industry product prior to fabrication. While aluminum is widely distributed in the earth&apos;s crust and is a major constituent of many rocks and soils, to date no method of extraction of aluminum from such nonbauxite material has been brought to commercial practice in the Western World. In the USSR alumina is produced by the complex processing of nepheline syenite, but elsewhere all commercial production of alumina is from bauxite. A brief discussion of recent developments and other processes for alumina is included in the subsection "Other Processes for Alumina," page 19-15. In early 1973, a major U.S. aluminum producer announced the successful development of processes for the production of aluminum from aluminum chloride. This achievement promises to exert a major influence on the future of the aluminum industry. In the initial com¬mercial application of this new technology, Bayer alumina will be chlorinated, and the aluminum chloride then reduced by electrolysis. Important claims for the new processes are lower energy requirements (one-third less than obtainable in Hall cells) and reduced labor costs. Capital costs are said to be no greater than for conventional plants. While the announced intention is to produce the aluminum chlo¬ride from Bayer process alumina, the new chloride reduction process will eliminate the other raw materials, carbon and fluorides, required by the conventional Hall cells. The electrodes in the chloride cell will not be consumed on the reduction process and the electrolyte will have, as the name indicates, a chloride rather than a fluoride base. 2. Bauxite Definition and Origin. Bauxite is a naturally occurring raw material composed principally of a mixture of one or more of the hy¬drated aluminum oxide minerals gibbsite (Al2O2 3H2O), boehmite (Al2O3 H2O), and diaspore (Al2O, - H2O), and impurities of silica, iron oxide, titania, and other various elements in trace amounts. It is an end or near-end product of chemical weathering. Depending on the amount of iron impurities, the color of bauxite varies from dark red and brown to pink to white. Some bauxite is finely divided, free digging earthy material, while other forms are dense and rocky, requiring explosives in mining. Many gradational forms exist. It is one of the most variable of mineral raw materials in chemical composition and physical appearance. It is generally believed that bauxite deposits resulted from intense chemical weathering of aluminum-bearing rocks or formations under tropical or subtropical conditions with alternating wet and dry sea¬sons. Topographic conditions were favorable for drainage and the in-situ accumulation of aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides. There was low to moderate topographic relief with a minimum of erosion during long quiet periods in earth history.2 The occurrence of bauxite is widespread and it has been found on all continents except Antarctica. Production was reported from 27 countries in 1974, at which time total world production was over 79 million metric tons. Of this production 76% was from seven coun¬tries-Australia, Jamaica, Surinam, Guinea, USSR, Guyana, and Greece-which ranked in that order of production. Secondary crushing often gets good press for its increases in energy efficiency and SAG milling rates but for a project considering this option the proposed benefits soon get overshadowed by implementation concerns. Reverse engineering from the published case studies is risky unless the reader understands the drivers impacting stability and operability of the circuit. This paper discusses the features of secondary crushing for Greenfield and Brownfield SAG mill grinding circuits. It is the author?s view that secondary crushing rarely adds value to a Greenfield project and restricts future expansion. Its application is best retro fitted to Brownfield operations where the benefit gained for capital expended is excellent. Two case studies are presented to reaffirm these statements. The first case study shows that the implementation of partial and total secondary crushing increases SAG mill power efficiency and it offers substantial incremental increases in milling throughput with staged capital investments for the crushing and grinding circuits respectively. The paper provides a critical analysis of process conditions for secondary-crushed grinding circuits, with particular emphasis on Brownfield circuit retrofits. Furthermore, the second case study quantifies the economic impact of secondary crushing on circuit design for plant start up and it illustrates the limit imposed on plant expansion.

In earlier work it has been shown that paper filler clay products can be obtained from primary kaolin deposits of Minnesota. The objective of the current work was to reduce silica and iron contaminants and to maximize kaolin recovery to higher value products suitable for paper coating. This results in achieving a finer and cleaner product conforming to paper coating specifications. Cationic flotation and high gradient magnetic separation were used to remove free silica and iron, respectively, while attrition grinding and ultrasonics have been examined for particle size reduction. The results of this work are presented and discussed particularly with respect to application-oriented product properties. Budgetary estimates are presented for a 200,000 ton/year processing plant based on the process flowsheet developed and optimized by the study.

The purpose of this paper is to present validation studies of the mine-fire simulator using data gathered from an actual mine fire which occurred in November 1991 at the Pattiki Mine. To develop the model of the ventilation system with the fire in this validation study, the following adjustments were made: (1) flow and gas distribution in the entire ventilation network, and (2) fire parameters matching the data recorded by the monitoring system. After close correlations between simulation and real data were achieved, additional analysis of the ventilation system with the mine fire was performed. Presented and discussed in this paper are the following stages of the fire at the Pattiki Mine: (1) early fire (before the fire was detected), (2) preparation for and fire fighting with water, (3) fire sealing, and (4) fire extinguishing. This study evaluates the suitability of the computer software package for modeling underground fires. The paper also discusses the importance of the on-line monitoring system for the validation process.

Over it’s more than 100-year history, the Kennecott operation has often been at the forefront of innovation; driven by the demands of the lower grade ore-body and the higher costs of operating in the US where wages are generally higher and regulation more restrictive. One way of reducing operating costs in c/lb is to increase the lbs produced at minimal cost. Despite the relatively coarse grind at Kennecott - about 30% >150μm, approximately 20% of the Cu lost to tail is liberated chalcopyrite in the <20μm fraction, and about 30%-40% in the <37μm fraction. In 2020 Kennecott undertook a detailed plant scale test of the magnetic aggregation technology to increase copper recovery by reducing fine copper losses. A paired statistical plant test of magnetic conditioning on one rougher line showed a 1.12% increase in Cu recovery to 97% statistical confidence. The next challenge, unforeseen at the start of the project, was the fabrication and transportation to site of the equipment for the three remaining rougher rows, during the severe supply-chain constraints of the Covid pandemic in 2021. This resulted in delays and unforeseen costs as world-wide transportation became chaotic, particularly transportation via west coast USA. Nevertheless, the project was completed and commissioned, with only minor delays and cost increases, due to a flexible approach to overcoming the hurdles encountered.

Since it was first introduced, the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) has been widely accepted as a tool for geologic characterization and mine planning. This paper discusses the application of the CMRR to another practical ground control problem. Extended cuts (cuts greater than 6 m (20 ft) in length) are commonly used with remote control continuous miners. Extended cuts can greatly increase productivity, but they have been associated with a number of fatal roof fall accidents. When extended cuts are attempted in weak roof, the roof may collapse before it can be bolted, causing hazardous conditions. Until now, it has not been possible to predict where conditions may not be suitable for extended cuts. In this study, data on the CMRR and extended cut experience were collected at 36 mines in 7 states. It was found that when the CMRR was greater than 55, deep cuts were routine in nearly every case. When the CMRR was less than 37, extended cuts were almost never taken. Between 38 and 55, extended cuts were feasible sometimes but not others. The data also shows that extended cuts are less likely to be stable if either the entry span or the depth of cover increases.

Lead ions originating from galena during processing of complex sulphide ores migrate to "cover" the surface of sphalerite and iron sulphide mineral particles, and cause poor selectivity in differential flotation. Generally in sulphide ore processing, the lead-activated minerals float in the Cu/Pb rougher circuit. Subsequently, surface lead complicates the zinc flotation circuit by lowering the concentrate grade due to the co-flotation of lead-activated iron sulphide minerals. The effect of lead in the differential flotation of sphalerite from Cu-Pb-Zn and Pb-Zn ores is discussed. Plant and laboratory test data are interpreted by determining the surface composition of individual grains of sphalerite and iron sulphide particles using two surface analytical techniques, Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometer (LIMS) and Time of Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (TOF-SIMS). Cationic and anionic species on the surface were analyzed to elucidate the phenomena.

The need for reliable and adaptable underground mine communications has become a focal point for both the safety and logistics of a mining operation. New mine communication technology aims to connect personnel, equipment, and data together while setting up a network that can be utilized during normal operations and also in an emergency event. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (also known as the MINER Act) requires mine operators to establish post-accident, two-way communication between underground and surface personnel and electronic tracking for all mine personnel. Communications systems must be designed such that they can survive major mine accidents, including explosions, fires, inundations and ground falls. Typical, wire-bound communication technologies are vulnerable because wires are often destroyed in such accidents. Wireless technologies that work well on the surface, such as cellular telephone networks; have limited applicability underground because the wireless signals do not propagate through rock.

The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly some basic principles of ground-water hydrology that have application in mine hydrology and to suggest that an understanding of these principles can help to forestall problems that are internal as regards mining operations and external as regards damage or harm to surrounding areas. The development of a mine below the water table pleads for accurate values to answers of hydrologic problems. Such internal problems involve both an inflow of water without adequate drainage facilities and a deficiency of water for the required mining or milling use. Methods which give acceptable quantitative values for the solution of many ground-water problems depend on rather simple geologic structures, characterized chiefly by homogeneous rocks of considerable areal extent. Unfortunately, mining operations are likely to be centered where rocks are not homogeneous. Consequently, methods that attempt to show values of the storage and transmitting capacity of rocks in mining areas must be applied with caution. In spite of complex geology and apparent uniqueness of individual mines and quarries, adherence to some concepts of ground-water occurrence and movement should be helpful to mine operators. Mining operations that extend below the water table disturb the natural hydrologic regimen. Prior to development, the water table slopes away from the site of a mine in at least one direction, but as soon as development begins and water is removed from the mine, the mine becomes the apex of a depressed cone in the water table, causing a convergence in the flow of water toward the mine, The behavior of the cone of depression, as it tends to deepen and to increase in areal extent when the mine is deepened, is related to the rate of withdrawal of water necessary to keep the mine dry. The significance and nature of the cone of depression in the vicinity of pumped wells has been studied by ground-water hydrologists for years, but the cone caused by pumping water from mines has generally been less systematically appraised. This paper discusses the role of the mineral-adapted acidiphilic microorganism Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans in the beneficiation of arsenopyrite-containing multisulfides (pyrite and chalcopyrite) and the bioremediation of the resulting arsenical waste water. It was found that adaptation to minerals alters the surface properties of the microorganism. Bacterial adaptation to arsenopyrite and controlled bacterial adhesion to mineral surfaces lead to selectivity in arsenopyrite separation. Bioremoval of arsenic ions (both arsenite and arsenate ions) by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is also discussed.
