The feasibility of developing the Underground Science City below the Kent Ridge Park has been investigated. The primary aim of the study has been to explore the possibility of creating underground space to house a new community of research laboratories and offices. The investigation represents the first such study undertaken in Singapore for a non-military underground facility. The paper describes the geology of the Underground Science City site and illustrates the layout and plan of the Underground Science City. The geology and rock mass below the Kent Ridge Park is generally favorable for the development of an underground cavern complex. Underground Science City can be potentially developed housed in a cavern complex. Several potential development schemes are studied; with various combination of deep/shallow mined caverns of different span sizes and access options. The preferred scheme is shallow, mined room-and-pillar caverns with large spans and shaft accesses at both existing surface Science Park 1 and Science Park 2. The scheme can be potentially expanded laterally to create more underground space for new Underground Science Cities at Kent Ridge area.

The average annual growth rate of real gross domes-tic product (GDP) from the third quarter of 2001through the second quarter of 2003 in the United States was about 2.6 percent. GDP growth rates in the third and fourth quarters of 2003 were about 8 percent and 4 percent, respectively. Many other indicators reflected a rebounding U.S. economy — rising consumer confidence, higher retail sales, greater industrial production and more housing starts. Inflation also reached a 38-year low in 2003. The upward trends in many sectors of the U.S. economy in 2003, however, were shared by few of the mineral materials industries. Annual output declined inmost non fuel mining and mineral processing industries, although there was an upward turn toward yearend as prices began to increase (Table 1).

D.A. Dahlstrom In the paper, a comparison was made between flowsheets using the screen bowl centrifuge and disc filters, respectively, as the primary dewatering device. The authors very effectively show that by raising feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced through reduced viscosity of the water. When a final coal moisture of 10% is required, the net effect of heating the feed is a reduction in thermal requirements because of the lower evaporated load on the dryer. The flowsheet comparison on this, however, was not completely correct. Disc filters do not generally utilize enhanced mechanical dewatering through increased temperature. Horizontal belt filters, through the optimal use of steam heating of the filter cake, have shown significant cost reductions over disc filters where steam is not used. In addition, the authors forgot to mention that there is a certain fraction of the feed that is so fine that it cannot be recovered by the centrifuge economically. That is the function of the filtration device shown in Fig. 4. In subbituminous pipeline coals, this fraction represents more than 10% of the feed. Even after flocculation and belt pressing, the moisture content in the fine fraction is 30%-40. Recent tests on a subbituminous pipeline coal slurry, compared an Eimco-Extractor horizontal belt filter with the screen bowl centrifuge flowsheet shown in Fig. 4. Mechanical dewatering was enhanced through the use of a steam dry zone after the initial dewatering zone. Vacuum pump horsepower was reduced by more than 50% through the use of condensors, and heat recovery was utilized to minimize thermal costs. Thermal drying to 10% moisture by weight was required in both flowsheets. The 0.5 wt% fines in the filtrate were flocculated and recycled to the filter, thus eliminating the belt press and solids mixers. When the three major operating costs (which normally account for 50%-75% of the coal operating costs) of steam, electricity, and flocculants at current prices were calculated, the flowsheets utilizing the Eimco-Extractor had cost savings vs the centrifuge flowsheet of 89¢/t (81o; per st) of surface dry coal. This advantage increases with increasing thermal and electricity prices. I congratulate the authors for the strides made with the screen bowl centrifuge. However, filtration flowsheets continue to be improved and their simplicity and low thermal and electrical requirements should not be so quickly dismissed. ? Reply by N.D. Policow From a technical standpoint, a number of extensive test programs have demonstrated that by raising the feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced whether it be centrifuges or filters performing the separation. Economic constraints usually become the over-riding issue. If an inexpensive source of thermal energy is available, i.e., waste steam, etc., the approach becomes commercially acceptable. For the specific case of coal slurry pipelines, since the dewatering plants will be located close to power generation stations, the preheating approach becomes especially attractive. The cost comparison shown in Fig. 7, which was prepared by a major West Coast engineering firm, contrasted screen bowl centrifuges and disc filters. In both alternatives, a thermal dryer was specified to produce a contract moisture of the final product. Sizing of the thermal dryer on the screen bowl alternative was substantially smaller than that of the filter, since the screen bowl was credited with a four to six percentage point decrease in product moisture compared to the disc. This comparison was made at ambient temperatures and reflected solely the mechanical dewatering capabilities of the two devices. No preheating of the feed was included in this particular comparison. Early generation screen bowl centrifuges operated under the principle of maximum bulk tonnage throughput. Second and third generation machines have followed the trends dictated by the coal industry calling for higher one-pass recoveries than previously demanded. The current generation of high-speed, long-bowl centrifuges permit recoveries of ultrafine solids directly comparable to commercial filter operation. On typical coal preparation plant feeds with nominal 600 E. an X 0 (28 mesh X 0) clean coal, recovery levels in excess of 99% are now obtained. The material that does escape the centrifuge and reports to the main effluent is typically -10 µm, high ash material. We have documented substantial beneficiation effects in screen bowl centrifuge performance with the cake product containing lower ash levels than the feed. On the referenced pipeline, coal tests performed on Western subbituminous coal, we found that the percentage of -10 µm material in the feed was six to eight times greater than normally encountered on eastern Appalachian seams. Our 45-t/h (50-stph) production centrifuge was never set up to maximize recovery. It was used as part of the two-stage dewatering circuit that had been chosen by designers of the proposed pipeline. Recoveries up to 95% were recorded. With field adjustments, that performance could most certainly have been improved. In contrast, manufacturers of the horizontal belt filter provided a small pilot-scale unit that operated on a side stream at the test facility. Numerous combinations of chemical additions were evaluated to determine those that had the best impact on filter performance. Whereas the screen bowl centrifuges operated without chemical addition, producing a dry, fluffy cake, the belt filter required two stages of chemical addition to attain satisfactory performance and high recovery levels. Filtration of fine particles involves filter cake formation and removal of surface moisture by drawing air through the porous structure. Accurate assessment of the transport properties of porous media (in this case, filter cake) is of major importance in the development of improved filtration processes. Implications from these studies are important in the design and operation of filtration equipment in order to enhance the efficiency of this important solid-liquid separation process. The microstructure and connectivity of pore space are important features necessary to describe detailed fluid flow phenomena in filter cake during fine particle filtration. In this regard, 3D characterization of pore structure is essential. The pore structure has to be described by parameters which are of special relevance to the interpretation of fluid transport phenomena. These parameters should be based on directly measured variables of the pore system and not inferred from indirect variables (such as those determined empirically from transport processes) valid only for a particular pore structure. In this way fundamental relationships between pore structure and fluid transport at the microstructure level can be described. In order to achieve this level of sophistication the three-dimensional interconnected pore structure of filter cake must be determined. Study of fluid transport phenomena in filter cake using x-ray microtomography to characterize the complex three-dimensional pore geometry is discussed. On this basis the Lattice-Boltzmann (LB) method is used to simulate and to establish a fundamental relationship between pore microstructure and effective transport coefficients.

With the dawning of a new century came the beginning of a new era in the coal industry. Instead of the traditional practice of only buying and selling produced coal in the United States, a coal futures market was established. The New York Mercantile Exchange began trading coal futures in July 2001. But, even in this new era, many of the old is-sues that have beset the coal industry still remain, as was evident in2001. Coal production increased to are cord level during 2001, according to preliminary data from the US Energy Information Administration(EIA). Production in 2001 rose by4% to 1.01 Gt (1.12 billion st), compared with 2000 (Table 1). This barely surpassed the previous record level of 1 Gt (1.11 billion st)set in 1998. Coal consumption remained unchanged. The additional production was used to replenish the depleted stockpiles that had resulted after two years of declining coal production and increasing coal consumption.

"The close vicinity of mining companies to other sites that are used for commercial and residential purposes or to areas under conservation as well as the fact that the people become more and more sensitive to emissions have led to a negative attitude towards mining operations in the neighborhood. It is above all the use of drilling and blasting techniques that give rise to objections, in the course of which demands for more environmentally-friendly production methods have been voiced. It is in this context that production methods without the use of explosives are considered as an option. After all, the use of such production methods is the only alternative for some quarry operators. The question is what are the true benefits of these techniques and what is the relation between a possible improvement of the environmental effects on the one hand and the technological potential as well as the costs on the other. It is intended to assess the mining techniques for solid rock in their entirety. This paper will therefore look at the aspects for assessing mining techniques in the context of their environmental impact and the costs."

Part of the increase is a result of recent Research & Development efforts to improve Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) adaptability, capability and reliability. This paper will review the latest innovations in the TBM industry and explain in detail the results of these innovations followed by a forecast where the technology will take the tunnelling industry in the future.

As mining continues toward deeper reserves in thick western US coal fields, the control of mining induced-seismicity has become a priority in many operations in Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. Gradual floor heave, common in many coal mines, has historically not been a safety issue. However recent occurrences of sudden floor heave accompanied with seismicity in a few deep mines have fueled this investigation. The focus is to identify and study the mechanisms resulting in sudden heaving of the mine floor in western U.S. deep coal mines through analytical calculations and back analyses of an actual event in a cooperative mine. Based on review of available data in three mines, underground observations and back analyses of an actual event, the authors have identified the following contributing factors (1) presence of stiff stratigraphic units and thick seams mined at depths exceeding 1000-ft (2) presence of geological discontinuities reducing the in-situ strength of the coal with calculated factor of safety near 1 for the mine floor (3) mining approaching areas of higher than normal stress gradient associated with previous mining or structural anomalies or surface topographic highs and (4) an additional source of energy triggering sudden failure such as periodic caving or slip along geological discontinuities. Preliminary examination of seismic data for the actual event in the cooperative mine and underground observations excluded fault slip at the mining horizon as the triggering mechanism but highlighted the significance of weak, anisotropic strata conditions near the intersection of two faults.

The new Roasting Facility at Barrick’s Goldstrike Mine in Nevada, U.S.A. was developed to process 12,000 tons per day of refractory gold ore. The process consists of crushing, dry grinding, roasting, extensive gas purification, calcine quenching and leaching in the presence of activated carbon. The new plant is integrated into the existing Goldstrike facility, treating ore from both open pit and underground sources. The process design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the Roaster facility was performed successfully over a 3½ year period with peaks of 400 engineering personnel and 950 construction personnel supporting the project. The US$330,000,000 project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. The commissioning was well planned and proceeded smoothly through a rapid start-up to achieve all primary goals within three months of the start of processing of ore.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL)1 of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in collaboration with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Technical Support Center has devised a prototype hand-held instrument which can provide a direct assessment of the potential explosibility of a coal and rock dust mixture. Current Federal regulations require that rock dust be applied in all underground areas of a coal mine to mitigate the propagation of a coal dust explosion. To determine compliance with the Federal regulation, mine inspectors collect dust samples from sections of underground coal mines for an MSHA laboratory analysis of incombustible content. However, the laboratory analysis may not be completed for more than a week or two, during which time the mine area from which samples are taken may be inadequately protected. The operation of the Coal Dust Explosibility Meter (CDEM) is based on the difference in optical reflectance between light rock dust and dark coal dust. For a given coal volatility, the optical reflectance of such mixtures is relatively constant at the limit of explosibility, independent of the coal dust particle size. The CDEM is not intended to replace the current MSHA laboratory analysis of coal mine dust samples for incombustible content, but to serve as a supplemental device for enhancing mine safety through improved rock dusting practices.

Scattered north and south along a 161-km (100-mile) stretch of Interstate 80, Newmont Min¬ing Corp. owns four active mining properties in Nevada?s northern high desert ? Carlin Trend Operations, Midas, Twin Creeks and Phoenix. Among the four, there are nine openpits, five underground mines and 14 processing facilities. While gold is the predominant ore, silver and copper are also produced. And in a move to hold down energy costs, Newmont built and owns the 200-MW (net), coal-fired TS power plant. This plant provides about 65 percent of the power used for Newmont?s own operations, while the rest is sold to NV Energy, which services Nevada and northeastern California. Bringing the Phoenix Mine ? Newmont?s newest in Nevada ? on-line presented many developmental and operational challenges. Located about 19 km (12 miles) southwest of the town of Battle Mountain, the general area had been home to prospectors and other mining companies since the 1860s. But any profitability in developing the lower grade gold, copper and silver deposit at Phoenix proved elusive, with Battle Mountain Gold being the last company to make an attempt. When Newmont acquired Battle Mountain Gold and its Phoenix reserves in 2001, the lower grade of ore was not a deterrent. Newmont found Nevada-wide cost savings synergies for maximizing profit during the depressed gold market of the late 1990s. The new property was aptly renamed the Phoenix Mine, a nod to its rising from the ashes of the dreams and efforts of previous mine owners.

INTRODUCTION The subway line B of Toulouse (France) has been realized with three different tunnel boring machines (TBM) techniques: Contracts 2 and 5 are excavated with earth-pressure balanced TBM, Contract 4 with a slurry shield TBM, and Contract 3 with a compressed-air TBM. The first three machines are around 7.7 m in diameter, while the last one is 5.3 m. Moreover, a small part of the line (50 m) has been excavated by a conventional method. The tunnels run through the Toulouse molasses, composed of hard sandy clay with pockets and lenses of dense sand. Geotechnical investigations have shown that in these formations, K0 is greater than 1, around 1.8 at a depth of 25 m (Serratrice,2005) and that geotechnical characteristics are homogenous on the whole layout (? =22 kN/m3, Su = 300 kPa, c' = 30 kPa, F' = 32°). The water table is found between 2 and4 m below ground level. As geology, stratigraphy and tunnel cover (between 10 and 20 m) are almost identical, a comparison of movements induced by the excavation by each of the four excavation techniques is possible. This paper presents the soil mass movement measures in the case of the conventional excavation method and in the case of TBM sections. It shows how tunneling parameters may explain the different surface movements observed during excavation. For the sake of simplicity, only the results of Contract 2 (earth pressure balanced TBM)will be presented. For several recent TBM tunnel projects, unexpected ground conditions have been encountered, causing extra cost, considerable delay, and in some cases major claims. Undoubtedly, insufficient and/or irrelevant site investigation and testing are among the main causes of such incidents. The purpose of this paper is to review the main investigations and tests relevant for hard rock TBM projects, with particular emphasis on the considerable development that has taken place over the last few years. Also, guidelines for defining optimum scope and extent of site investigations and testing are discussed, as well as the importance of adjusting the investigations and tests according to complexity of the ground conditions and project type.

Multidisciplinary investigations were completed to prove the availability of water resources for the proposed San Cristóbal silver-lead-zinc mine in the arid Altiplano of Bolivia. Surface water resources are scarce, of poor quality, and unsuitable for development. Therefore, hydrogeological reconnaissance targeted alluvial aquifers for development. Follow-up resistivity, refraction, and water quality assessments were used to prioritize areas with prolific production potential. Pumping tests and regional water balance analysis indicate an alluvial aquifer can sustain the required approximately 40 000 m3 per day production for the life of the mine and predict no significant negative environmental effects on local groundwater users and the environment.

For short tunnels, a reinforced cast-in-place lining is not economical and shotcreteis a logical substitution. In the past, reinforced shotcrete linings have been constructed with lattice girders and welded wire fabric. For the Russia Wharf Tunnel in Boston, MA, the Contractor, with the help of the Dr. G. Sauer Corporation offered the MBTA a VECP to substitute the reinforced cast-in-place concrete lining with a steel fiber reinforced shotcrete lining. The challenge was to adequately model the ductility of the steel fiber reinforced shotcrete and to test the shotcrete prior to and during construction to assure quality control. To our knowledge, this type of numerical simulation has not been used on any other tunnels in the US.

Empirical and numerical methods are the two extremes of the tools available for the seismic design of subsurface excavations and underground structures. Both have their limitations: when relying on purely empirical methods directly relevant experience may be scant; site data may be insufficient to justify a comprehensive dynamic analysis. The primary purpose of this paper is to review the analytical tools available to the design engineer of subsurface excavations and underground structures. Particular attention is devoted to simplifed models that appear to be applicable in many practical cases.

In order to ensure safe mining and reduce surface damage in shallow multiple-seam mining, the failure characteristics of interburden strata with different coal pillar offset distances between pillars in the upper and lower seams, the distribution characteristics of stress concentration in coal pillars, and the development characteristics of stratum cracks and subsidence were physically investigated and also using UDEC2D software. Meanwhile, the effect of different coal pillar offset distances on the stress concentration of coal pillars and development of stratum cracks were studied. Based on those results, a formula for safe mining and reducing surface damage was established, which provided a theoretical basis for safe and environmentally friendly mining in shallow multi-seams. According to the results of the study, the optimal coal pillar offset distance (the side-to-side horizontal distance of the upper and lower coal pillars) between the upper and lower coal seams was developed to reduce the stress concentration of coal pillars and surface damage. The results of this study have been applied in Ningtiaota coal mine and have achieved good results in safe and environmentally friendly mining.

Sag Mills are becoming bigger in size almost every year. Concentrator plants are also becoming larger with more SAG and Ball Mills units with Gearless Mill drives installed in one plant. In contradiction to this development, concentrator plants are being built in increasingly remote areas, where the power supply and network conditions are not necessarily covering the needs for the operation of such plants. This paper describes sources of harmonic distortions and possible approaches to solve this problem. It also illustrates the permissible tolerances in terms of commutation of power electronics, based on already realized installations. Furthermore it explains how, and with which measures, harmonic currents created by non-linear loads with SAG and Ball Mill drives can be handled, and how harmonic standards can be fulfilled accordingly. Finally, this paper gives an overview about the technical impact of a strong versus weak network, and the economic relationship between them.

He communicated by mail, telegraph and crude telephones with limited availability and range. By 2000, the average citizen’s life span was 77 years. He traveled an average of 19,000 km/a (12,000 miles/year) by automobile alone. He resided in a home with many electrical appliances, including refrigerators and electric lights. And he communicated almost instantaneously with any other part of the globe by several widely available means, including portable phones and e-mail.

The proposed Second Avenue Subway is a new two-track subway line running from 125th Street and Park Avenue at the north, east along 125th Street to Second Avenue and south along Second Avenue to the Financial District in lower Manhattan, NY with 16 new stations and 13.6 km (8.5 miles) of track. The project has been broken into four construction phases. The initial Phase 1 operating segment includes three new stations (96th, 86th and 72nd Street stations) with a connection to the existing Broadway line at the 63rd Street Station at Lexington Avenue. Rehabilitation of the 63rd Street Station is also included in the scope of Phase 1. Subsequent phases extend service north and west to 125th Street (Phase 2), south to Houston Street (Phase 3) and finally to Hanover Square (Phase 4). The DMJM Harris/Arup Joint Venture (DHAJV) prepared the Contract Documents MTA for Phase 1. Parsons Brinckerhoff is providing the MTA with construction inspection services for Contract C-26002. In April 2007, NYCT awarded first Phase 1 for $337 million to S3 Tunnel Constructors, a tri-venture comprised of Skanska USA Civil, Schiavone and Shea. Contract C26002 is for the construction of the tunnel boring ma-chine (TBM) launch box and the mining of the TBM tunnels from 92nd Street to 63rd Street. The major part of the contract is to construct a shaft, commonly referred to as the launch box, from East 92nd Street to East 95th Street having dimensions of 244-m- (800-ft-) long by 18.9-m- (62-ft-) wide and a depth of 19.8 m (65 ft), including more than 91,000 m3 (119,000 cu yd) of soil and rock contained within its walls. The launch box will ultimately become the southern half of the 96th Street Station. The focus here is geological conditions at the launch box and existing structures along the launch box. These geologic conditions and existing structures had a major influence on the selection and design of the support of excavation system (SOE), the SOE bracing system, construction staging, the ground movements, dewatering and other challenges of constructing the launch box (Fig. 1).
