INTRODUCTION Since Canada commenced sulphur exports in the early 1960's, the volume of exports has grown steadily and by 1984 Canadian sulphur accounted for 45% of internationally traded sulphur. In 1984 a total of 7.6 million tonnes of Canadian sulphur was shipped to offshore markets and the U.S.A. Total shipments, including domestic sales, were 8.3 million tonnes. With a production of some 5.6 million tonnes, inventory was drawn down by nearly 3 million tonnes in order to keep pace with demand. Since 1979, world consumption has exceeded total world production and Canadian sulphur inventory has played a truly crucial role in balancing world supply and demand. Consequently, by the end of 1984 the Canadian inventory, which stood at 21 million tonnes in 1978, had been almost halved to 12 million tonnes. This inventory, however, is still by far the largest in the world and will continue to play a vital role in the world supply until expected depletion around 1990. Canada is the world's second largest producer of sulphur following the U.S.A.. The Current production level of between 5 and 6 million tonnes per annum is forecast to be maintained to 1990 with only a marginal fall in that production level in the following decade to the year 2000. This will ensure that Canada retains its position as one of the largest producers and most important suppliers of sulphur in the world market well into the future. CANADA AS WORLD SUPPLIER OF SULPHUR Since Canada commenced sulphur exports in the early 19601s, exports have grown steadily. (Figure 1) The rate of growth accelerated in recent years and in 1984 a total of 7.6 million tonnes was sold for export, compared to 3.0 million tonnes in 1975 and less than 1 million tonnes in 1964. World trade in sulphur also increased during this period, from 11 million tonnes in 1975 to 17.0 million tonnes in 1984 (Figure 2). Most of this increase in volume was accounted for by Canada and Poland. As a result, the importance of Canada as world supplier expanded from 28% in 1975 to 45% in 1984. The markets for Canadian sulphur can be divided into two broad categories, i.e., solid and liquid (Figure 3). The solid market is the largest, taking about 70% of Canadian output, virtually all of which is sold offshore. The U.S.A. and the Canadian domestic market take about 20% and 10% respectively, in liquid form. In 1984, (figure 4) total Canadian sulphur sales exceeded 8 million tonnes with offshore export sales at a record 5.8 million tonnes and sales to the U.S. of 1.8 million tonnes. Domestic sales accounted for only 0.7 million tonnes. The general trend for offshore export sales has been upward whereas there has been relative stability in domestic sales. The exceptional growth in offshore sales in the 1970's necessitated considerable capital investments by the industry in order to establish a logistics system capable of handling increasing offshore tonnages. Over 50 sulphur plants are currently operating in Alberta and British Columbia. Some of these are connected by rail, (Figure 5) the balance being generally connected by road. There are currently fourteen of the larger rail-connected plants designated as export plants, and these are equipped with sulphur forming facilities. The long distances between these plants and tidewater terminals in Vancouver is a very significant factor in complex logistics of Canadian offshore sulphur exports (Figure 6). Alberta and B.C. plants are located an average of 1,400 kilometers from tidewater.

Horizontal cyclones have also proven to be very successful in a number of operations but their impact on the circuit capacity has not been clearly defined.

The Folsom Area Stormwater Improvement Project is part of SFPUC’s flood resilience efforts under the Sewer System Improvement Program. This 4,000-foot-long, 12-footinside- diameter tunnel will help reduce the risk of flooding in San Francisco’s low-lying Inner Mission neighborhood. The project is in a high seismic hazard zone and extends through a complex geologic corridor that includes full-face soft, compressible Bay Mud, Colma Sands, and full-face rock with several stretches of mixed-face conditions. Additional challenges include removal of 99 piles beneath an existing box sewer, tunneling under commuter rail tracks, and an underground tie-in. This paper examines these challenges and how they are being addressed.

The success and efficiency of an approximation procedure depend on the quality of the initiating parameters such as bounds or seed values (guesses). Current approximation procedures commonly use bounds and guesses dictated by intuition rather then by mathematical consideration. The paper presents three ROR-bounding and six ROR-guessing approaches and examines their suitability on the examples of the typical project cash flow patterns.

In seeking cost reductions, control methods are a fertile field because they significantly affect labor and other costs. While process control in uranium mills is excellent by the evidence of high recovery, the costs seem high to those familiar with extractive operations for other metals. To some extent this high cost is inevitable, because of exacting quality control-, the technically complicated recovery processes; poor control over grade and nature of mill feed- special problems arising out of the radioactive property of the material. Practices used in uranium mills and the limitations indicated for instrumentation and automation are discussed. It is concluded that any large investment in automatic controls should be preceded by a careful study of their reliability and maintainability, and an estimate of the net income after taxes smaller plants my find it more profitable, or at least less risky, to concentrate their efforts on the possible reduction of some control problems and to development of a stable force of skilled employees. The observed experience does not inspire optimism that ore-dressing plants can be extensively automated although certain unit operations offer a challenge for improvements in instrumentation and machine design.

Relax: the world today is not running short of many mineral commodities, even though prices are spiraling upward. Einstein?s observation still holds true that everything is still relative, as long as one can pass on the incremental costs of production to the consumer. However, a strong consensus exists among many of the companies comprising the minerals processing industry that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find the easy-to-mine, high-quality resources that make juicy profit margins, which shareholders like. For the most part, the resource cherries have all been picked, and established mineral processing companies that are exhausting their reserves, or in the process of looking to add reserves so as to create longevity for their company, have no recourse but to look long and hard at what were once considered the dregs of the earth. Even end users, such as steel companies, are now looking to become ?miners,? to establish captive iron ore resources. Owning a captive resource facilitates a dependable supply of feed materials, which translates into effective cost control and a guarantee for a thriving sustainable business in the future.

This paper presents some of the results of a research on long-term subsidence over and near the chain pillar systems -the area available to long-term subsidence in longwall operations. Although the long-term subsidence in most longwall operation is insignificant, it does exist in some cases. For the cases where long-term subsidence is significant, it has been found that the development process can be expressed by an exponential decaying function. The stability factor of the chain pillar system and the potential for long-term subsidence are the two important factors that control the magnitude and development characteristics of the long-term subsidence process.

New erosion, corrosion resistant metal, ceramic, and polymer composite technologies are being developed and marketed by Alanx Products L.P. for use in hydrocyclones, pumps, valves, and other applications in mining and minerals processing. This paper will present an overview of the ceramic/metal composite material system and properties developed, which include excellent erosion/ corrosion resistance. Wear data will be shown from a variety of laboratory tests in dry and wet conditions, in aqueous neutral and corrosive environments. Comparisons will be made with a variety of competitive materials currently used in the industries sited. Data will also be presented on field tests with pumps and hydrocyclones in hard rock mining and other abrasive/corrosive environments. Field data from North and South America, as well as Australian mining applications will be highlighted.

The General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS) is a computer simulation language that has been used for simulations of open pit haulage operations since the 60's. It is easy to learn, simple to use, and has a block-diagram structure that is amenable to load-haul systems. However, due to its lack of flexibility, there are situations where another language should be chosen. This paper reviews the characteristics and capabilities of both GPSS and FORTFAN with regard to open pit shovel and truck simulation. The relative advantages and disadvantages are highlighted and a case study presented along with comparative results from two computer models (one written in GPSS and the other written in FORTRAN).

The depth capability of engineering seismographs has been greatly increased by the use of signal enhancement, a technique in which seismic waveforms created by repeated impacts are digitized, stored, and summed. Summation amplifies the signal and partially cancels background noise. This gives a clearer picture of the wave aid makes it possible to determine the travel tune of signals from 'eater depth. Signal enhancement combined with continuous display of waveform, permanent recording of waveform, and precision digital readout of travel time has opened new fields of application in mining and engineering. Recent work has clown that replacement sulfides can be distinguished seismically from country rock at Bistee, Ariz. Work on the Iron Range of Minnesota indication,: that, by using a 300 pound weight as the source, the Biwabik iron Formation can be traced down dip to several hundreds of feet traverses over known areas show that reflections can sometimes be identified. To better understand the load shedding and the stress transfer on coal pillars due to room-and- pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a monitoring field study. Two sites, at overburden depths of 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m), were selected in a room-and-pillar mine operating in Southern West Virginia. The deformation and stress changes in the roof and two adjacent pillars at each site were monitored during the retreat mining process. The monitoring results and field observations were used to calibrate large-scale FLAC3D models for each site. The calibrated models were used to assess different sizes of roof bolts installed in deep cover areas. INTRODUCTION Deep cover room-and-pillar retreat mining is an important emerging issue that will intensify in the future as shallower reserves are depleted (Mark, 2009; Chase et al., 2002). During pillar retreat mining, the likelihood of local and/or global instabilities increases due to elevated stress levels near the pillar line because of the abutment loading. In the last decade, approximately 31% of the room-and-pillar mining groundfall fatalities in the United States occurred during pillar retreat mining. Between 2013 and 2017, this proportion increased to 55%, of which 50% of these fatalities were due to falls of roof and rib that occurred during pillar recovery (MSHA, 2018). One interesting piece of information about pillar recovery fatalities was that the victim was nearly always under bolted roof. Sheared and broken #5 (5/8-in), fully grouted rebar bolt failure contributed to three of four fatal roof fall incidents that have occurred in deep cover retreat mines (NIOSH, 2010). This claim raised the following question at the study mine: Is it safe to use a 4-ft long #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt grade 60 at a depth of cover more than 1,000 ft (304.8 m)? There was some concern about shear failure of the #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt at a depth of cover over 1,000 ft (304.8 m). To answer the question and to reduce accidents and fatalities caused by ground falls due to room-and-pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) monitored the roof and rib deformation and the change in vertical pressure within two adjacent pillars during pillar recovery. The study was conducted at two deep cover sites in a room-and-pillar mine located in Southern West Virginia that operates in the Lower War Eagle (LWE) seam. The monitored sites were selected at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m) depths of cover. In this paper, site-1 represents the monitored site at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) of cover, while site-2 represents the monitored site at 1,500 ft (457.3 m) of cover. For this study, large-scale FLAC3D numerical models were calibrated based on both field observations and instrumentation results. The calibrated models were then used to compare the ground response and the induced stresses of two pillars at instrumented sites 1 and 2. The maximum lateral displacement (roof shift) obtained from the calibrated large-scale FLAC3D models was applied to a small-scale FLAC3D bolted models, the safety factor for axial stresses of the simulated roof bolts was calculated at the deep cover sites.

INTRODUCTION Chuquicamata mine is a large copper open pit located in the north of Chile. It has been in production for more than 80 years and now is in the later stages of its life with declining grades and increasing haul distances. As any old mine with long established organizations and procedures, it has faced one of the most difficult managerial problems: to conduct changes. Since 1994, the new management team has been devoted to a modernization pro- gram focused mainly in restructuring business operations. downsizing the labor force and introducing a mine planning pro- cess consistent with the company's goal. The explicit identification of the latter issue has been made because of the management’s conviction about the importance of it in the profitability of the business. The mine planning process at Chuquicamata mine has evolved from an old manual technique towards a modern computarized system, however the fundamental aspects and the procedures involved in this process have been the same. For in- stance, the cutoff grades policy has not changed during the last said 20 years, regardless of the changes to grade distribution, commodity prices, plant capacities, etc. To review and rethink this process, the strategy was to work with a small group of inside engineers and the management in order to interact with several mining consulting firms. The idea was to open a discussion about the fundamental principles used in the mine planning activities and, at the same time, to explore new ideas to improve the operating practices that have been followed for a long time. Thus, the goal of this paper is to present the mine planning approach that was the result of this work and the improvements that were obtained. THE CHUQUICAMATA MINE The Chuquicamata division is one of the five operations of Codelco and is currently devoted to operating the Chuquicamata mine; a copper open pit, concentrator, smelting and refining complex. It also operates Mina Sur which consists of an open pit mine, a leaching-solvent extraction and electrowinning process. There is also a dump leaching and a Sx-Ew plant for treating the low grade suifide ore (under the cutoff grade) from the Chuquicamata mine. Prior to reviewing the mine planning process, capacities for the Chuquicamata sulfide line were 640 000 tpd of run of mine material, 160 000 tpd of ore and 4 200 tpd of concentrate. This meant a total annual movement of around 230 Mt in the mine and a treatment of 57 Mt in the concentrator with a stripping ratio of approximately 3: 1. The old exploitation strategy consisted of an "open scheme", which means that all benches must have a berm with enough space to allow the traffic of large haulage trucks. This fact implied working with a great flexibility, but the consequences were flat slope angles. One of the reasons for using this operating practice in short term planning was that the grade consistency from the pit has always been a controversial variable. Schedules were designed to meet grade targets accurately and they were modified immediately when deviations become apparent. This reality led to working with a great deal of independent pushbacks and it required flexibility in the traffic system. The cutoff grade policy has been the same for a long time and the figure was 0.5 %CUT either for sulfide or oxide ore. This was the reason why a balance was produced between the mine and the concentrator. The mine is operated principally with benches of 26 m but in the upper part of the pit there are benches of 24 and 30 m. The main production equipment is shovels of 28 and 34 yd3 along with trucks of 200 and 240 st. Regarding the crushing facilities, there are two main systems located inside the pit and an old one in the periphery, close to a stockpile and near the concentrator. In the north part of the pit there is a crusher for waste material and in the north-east area is located the ore crusher facility. Both restrict a significant area of the pit and the mine sequence is considering to move the ore crusher again to the south-east sector where it used to be located. Relating to the waste crusher, the idea is to move it up to a bench near the surface in order to use the same conveyor belt and, at the same time, liberate an important sector. THE MINE PLANNING PROCESS The objective of the mine planning process is to develop a mine plan for the life of the deposit, in harmony and consistent with the company's goal. It includes the origin and destiny of tonnages and grades from the mine(s), along with the necessary resources to carry out this plan such as: fleet requirement, consumable goods, manpower, etc. From the financial point of view, it means to establish the cash flow for each time period of the mine life. That is. the revenue, capital investment and operating cost associated with each period of the plan. The fundamental principles involved in the mine planning pro- cess have been a controversial issue for a long time. One of the reasons for these divergent views could be produced by the difficulty of modeling a complete extraction policy for a geological re- source. This particular problem has to deal with several decision variables that are time dependent. So far, there is no mathematical formulation for managing such a problem, and the approach to solve it is based on a circular analysis combined with certain heuristic tools. So, a global model rather than a formula, requires a clear understanding of mine operations as well as economic theory and its application to a non-renewable resource. In order to manage this complex problem, the mine planning process can be conveniently split off in three stages which are conceptual, feasibility and operational planning. The characteristics of each stage are basically the timeliness in which they are developed and the kind and number of variables involved. Operation of a pilot-scale Floatex density separator was studied using a pyrite concentrate slurry feed. Experimental measurements were further utilized in parameterization of a hindered settling simulation model. The model incorporates particle slip velocity calculation and also a separation efficiency function, adjusted to describe the feed material characteristics. The model was used to compute the overflow and underflow compositions when both fluidization bed pressure and teeter water flow rates were varied. In addition, prediction accuracy and the model validity were evaluated. The simulations gave good results when the teeter interstitial velocities were moderate enough to avoid excessive turbulence in the fluidization. Prediction of the cumulative overflow and underflow size distributions in most experiments yielded essentially less than 10% relative error between the sample data and the estimated value of the 50% passing sizes.

This paper describes the derivation of a set of simultaneous algebraic equations that can be solved to produce a rigorous theoretical mass balance around solution mining wells. This mass balance can then be compared with a mass balance calculated from field measurements to provide the percentage of mass balance closure. Significant deviations from the closure can be an indication that the wells are either gaining or losing circulation fluids. The equations also provide calculations for the amount of water and dissolved mineral that accumulates in the well during the mining process, as well as the net mining rate. Equations for both single mineral mining and multiple mineral mining are discussed. They can easily be formatted into spread sheets for rapid calculation of field measurement data.

This paper provides a determination of the equivalent level of protection of the international standards relative to similar criteria used by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to approve two-fault intrinsically safe (IS) stand-alone equipment. U.S. mining law requires such a determination for MSHA to use alternatives to existing standards. The primary issue is to demonstrate that the international standards for equipment evaluation will provide at least the same level of protection for miners as the document currently used by MSHA.

Overseas coal trade has increased from 169 to 274 million metric tons (tonnes) between 1970 and 1983, representing a 3.8% average annual rate of growth. Metallurgical coal accounts for nearly 61% of the international coal market while steam coal's share is about 40%. By year-end 1983, the U.S. was the single largest coal exporter at 77 million tonnes, followed by Australia, 56 million tonnes; Poland, 35 million tonnes; South Africa, 28 million tonnes; USSR, 27 million tonnes; and Canada, 17 million tonnes. Coal exports can play a more significant role for one country than another country. For instance, in the U.S., coal exports accounted for only 9% of total coal demand in 1984 while in Australia, exports accounted for 53% of that country's total coal demand. Of all the major coal exporters, only U.S. exports accounted for less than 10% of total consumption in 1984. Japan is the largest importer of coal, 73.8 million tons in 1983. Although the majority of Japan's imports are metallurgical coal, steam coal imports into Japan increased seven-fold between 1978 and 1983, from 2 to 14 million tonnes. Australia is the leading exporter of both metallurgical and steam coal to Japan, accounting for 47% and 55% of Japan's coal imports, respectively. Since 1978, South Africa has developed into a major steam coal exporter to Japan, increasing its market share from 7.9% to 18.8%. The U.S., which was not even a player in Japan's steam coal market in 1978, has made inroads and accounts for 6.7% of Japan's steam coal imports. However, this translates into only one million tonnes. In the European coal market, for the most part, the U.S. is the leading supplier of metallurgical coal and South Africa is the major supplier of steam coal. The U.S. was not even a factor in the European steam coal market in 1978 and has made inroads during the last six years at the expense of Poland and South Africa. From 1978 to 1983, the U.S. has increased its market share in steam coal exports to France from 0.2 to 28%; Spain, 0 to 52%; Italy, 0 to 43.5%; Denmark, 0 to 19%; Germany, 0.5 to 16%; and the Netherlands, 0.6 to 45%, respectively. The use of coal (solid fuels) as a fuel to produce electricity has had increasing signficance for most of the countries analyzed between 1978 and 1983. The flip side to this is that oil has lost its share of this market during this time period. Of all the countries selected, only France reported a decline in coal's share of total electricity production. This is a reflection of France's ambitious nuclear program.

The Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM) is a method for designing, implementing, and evaluating? performance improvement strategies for machine operators and other mining personnel. The WCPM offers a practical approach for measuring job proficiency and identifying costly behaviors. It enables interventions aimed at performance improvement, especially training, to be assessed monetarily. Two interrelated elements of the WCPM are emphasized: observational techniques for establishing performance baselines and measuring performance outcomes and cost linkages between job competencies and measures related to profitability. Inter-and intra-subject differences in performance-related behaviors of regular and incidental shuttle car operators were detected during field validation of the WCPM. Downtime data were used as outcome measures to test linkages between performance error rates and cost consequences. Use of a simulation program for analyzing continuous mining face operations showed how common shuttle car operating parameters (e.g., payload, tram rate) can be used as cost-conscious indicators of performance variability and therefore as targets for performance improvement.

The response of feldspar flotation to tallow diamine dioleate collector in the presence of sulfuric acid is studied using batch flotation experiments. Application of this non-hydrofluoric acid (non-HF) reagent system in the flotation of mineralogically and chemically different feldspar ores is compared with that of the conventional hydrofluoric acid system. The dependence of flotation recovery and concentrate grade on feed particle size distribution, conditioning time, pulp density, and pH, combined variation of collector and acid addition rates, sodium hydroxide concentration in the collector solution, and initial pulp pH prior to conditioning is studied. The results have been discussed in relation to applicability of the non-HF system to plant trials, and the nature of the collector adsorption in the selective flotation of feldspar.

By now the term AFMAG has been fairly well introduced to the mining industry. Several papers have been presented and published concerning AFMAG (references 1 and 2). However, the term AFMAG remains rather new to the industry, and the exact place which AFMAG occupies in the minerals exploration field is still somewhat uncertain in the minds of many who may have use for this new and interesting method of electromagnetic exploration for conductive minerals. It is the purpose of this paper to again review the basic theory of the AFMAG system, to describe and - illustrate the equipment and data presentation as used in aerial surveying, and to provide some idea of the cost and nature of airborne AFMAG surveys. This paper is primarily of a general descriptive nature and presents AFMAG theory in a schematic rather than mathematical form; emphasis is placed on the equipment, the present method of data presentation and survey operations, since it is believed that such, information will now generally best serve to inform the mining industry of the characteristics of the AFMAG system.
