As the surface reserves are being depleted, more and more stone operators are seeking underground mining options. Stability of underground openings is a major concern for the safety and productivity. This paper relates to a field study conducted at a large underground limestone mine in Central Pennsylvania. Identification of hazards leading to ground failures and assessment of roof fall risks are important in mitigating injuries. Field observations at this mine were integrated with Roof Fall Risk Index (RFRI) mapping software recently developed by West Virginia University. The system is designed to combine field study data related to geologic factors, mining-induced damages, roof profile, and ground water influx to generate RFRI maps. The mine has adopted a proactive ground control program consisting of comprehensive examination of drilling and bolting logs; precision surveying of roof and rib; accurate mapping of cutters, falls, and geologic structures; and installation of extensometers and microseismic monitoring systems. Investment of time and resources has eliminated fatalities and lost-time injuries due to ground fall. This paper presents the geologic settings, mining conditions, ground control issues along with risk management and control techniques adopted at the study mine.

Economical dewatering of ultra-fine (minus 74 m) clean coal slurry produced in column flotation to a 20 percent or lower moisture level will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced fine coal cleaning processes. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of three dewatering techniques, namely, hyperbaric, vacuum and screen bowl centrifuge, in dewatering of ultra-fine (D50 -25 m) clean coal slurry produced by the 'Ken-Flote' columns operating at the Powell Mountain Coal Company, St. Charles, Virginia. he hyperbaric filter using 3 bar pressure and 1650 cake formation angle, provided a filter cake with 23.6 percent moisture with a throughput of 800 Kg/m2-h and air consumption of 868 Nm3/t (460 scfm/t). The vacuum filter with 30 percent submergence provided a filter cake with 27.8 percent moisture with a throughput of 122 Kg/m2-h. The screen bowl centrifuge provided a dewatered product containing 32.9 percent moisture at a feed rate of 450 Kg/hr, however, the solids capture was only 65 percent. Addition of 1 Kg/t of a cationic surfactant provided filter cakes with 19.1 percent, 23 percent, and 34 percent moisture using hyperbaric, vacuum, and centrifuge, respectively. Similarly, addition of 0.5 Kg/ton of copper chloride lowered filter cake moisture to 20.7 percent and 24.8 percent, using hyperbaric and vacuum. With the centrifuge no improvement in filter cake moisture was noted. However, use of 80 Kg/ton of 'orimulsion' in the centrifuge provided dewatered product containing 26 percent moisture, and the solids capture increased from 65 to 95 percent. The dewatered product appeared dry and was easily handleable.

In 1997, Central Contra Costa Sanitary District undertook the design of the Martinez East Side Trunk Sewer Improvements Project. Microtunneling was specified for approximately 1,035 meters (3,400 feet) of 600-mm (24-inch)diameter pipeline to be installed through estuarine soil deposits (San Francisco Bay Mud) and alluvium beneath the congested city streets of downtown Martinez, California. Directional drilling was specified for approximately 275 meters (900feet) of 200-mm (8-inch) diameter pipeline in four separate segments to be drilled through bedrock within narrow utility easements between residential properties. This paper presents a case history for the design and construction of themicrotunneling and directional drilling aspects of the project.

A small scale continuous flotation cell was designed and constructed at Noranda Technology Centre to develop a mobile testing flotation circuit located next to the production circuit. This mobile small scale flotation pilot plant can easily and economically be set up at any circuit in a mill and used to evaluate and predict plant performance against a given flotation condition. The main feature of the cell, beside the provisions of automatic pulp level and feed rate control, is to provide a reduced surface to volume ratio approaching to that of an industrial machine. This paper describes the basic design and the results of various testwork carried out to date including aeration, conditioning, reagents, recirculation, flotation gas, etc. are presented in comparison with the plant production results.

It is now well documented that trace amounts of silver, gold, and platinum group metals occur in certain geothermal brine deposits. A significant body of literature has been generated over the last twenty years which describes attempts to quantify the frequency and levels of these precious metals in the brines. This literature is often confusing and contradictory. For example Barnea 1 states that the Salton Sea geothermal field carries 2 ppm gold, yet more recent data by workers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory2 (LLNL) concludes that the gold level in Salton Sea brine is <0.07 ppb. They report a platinum level in one well of 55 ppb. This apparent contradiction may be explained by sampling source and technique, but is most probably explained by difference in analytical technique. Analytical techniques and problems will be discussed in the next section.

Lignite reserves occur all over the world in different climatic regions. This means, that the impact of the hydrologic regime upon mining activities and, vice versa, of the mining activities upon ground and surface water conditions will be different between any two mines. On the other hand, most economically important lignite deposits can be grouped according to principal depositional and structural features described briefly in the following section. These features do allow a preliminary assessments of the nature of ground water problems which may face the mine. The cost of protection against water which threatens a mine, the environmental impact of the appropriate measures to achieve this end and the restraints of population density which both might exclude the most cost-effective approach will govern the project expenditure for drainage work. Whether or not this expenditure can be borne by the project must be established during the feasi¬bility phases of mine planning. So, the somewhat provoking title of this paper does not mean that its question can be answered once for ever. It should rather serve to bring to the attention of the audience the major features of mine water control.

Recent tailings dam failures around the globe have influenced many mining industry regulators to reassess their requirements for the numerical modelling of tailings dam failures. This type or forward modelling is associated with overarching uncertainties as the model cannot be calibrated against a physical result. Dam breach analyses that meet the requirements of current industry standards and guidance typically begin with identification of credible failure modes and selection of appropriate topographic data set to represent the study area. The breach parameters and the volume of tailings released are then determined using available methodologies and empirical relationships. Subsequently, when the breach hydrograph is developed and the hydrology of stream networks are complete, the runout simulation is implemented. Due to the uncertainty involved in the process, sensitivity analyses are recommended to quantify variations in model inputs on the inundation extent and the flow characteristics. This paper outlines some common methodologies utilized for development of dam breach models, summarizes associated uncertainties with these methodologies and inputs, and provides guidance on how sensitivity analyses can address a wide array of uncertainties inherent in tailings breach analyses. This paper provides an understanding of how selecting appropriate breach parameters can result in reasonably conservative inundation extents consistent with the identified credible failure modes.

With copper at its host depressed price in several years, producers are looking at every opportunity to cut costs in order to continue operating. Some of the measures that have been applied by different companies include reduction in manpower, high grading, and in some cases partial shutdowns. The most beneficial cost cutting measure implemented by Southern Peru Copper Corporation was to steepen the slope of the final pit limit from a conservative 37 degrees to an average of 48 degrees. By doing so, substantial cash outlays were saved. Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) operates two open pit copper mines and concentrators in the southern part of Peru, about 150 kilometers from the Chilean bordar. The Toquepala Mine went into production in 1960 and the Cuajone Mine in 1976. Both mines use shovel, truck and train operations. The trains, which haul ore to the crusher or waste to the dumps, are loaded either directly by shovels or by a transfer system. The Toquepala Concentrator treats an average of 43,000 tons per day and the Cuajone Concentrator an average of 55,000 tons per day. Concentrates are shipped via a 200 kilometer railroad to the port city of Ilo where the SPCC smelter is located. The annual production in the smelter from both mines is 290,000 tons of blister copper.

The Buick Concentrator is a highly automated operation which utilizes a process control system for continuous monitoring and control. The process control system development, installation, and application to the concentrator grinding and flotation circuits are presented in this paper. The design and implementation of analog field sensing instrumentation, a continuous on-stream X-ray analyzer, grinding and classfication circuit controls, and a recent digital process control system utilizing a centralized computer are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the project planning and installation of the digital control system including a presentation of future plans for continuing application of computer control.

An exploration bore core sample of coal ought to be reduced from its original cylindrical form to a particle size distribution and particle composition that reflects, insofar as possible, a process stream of? raw? coal it represents. Often, coal cores are reduced with a laboratory crushing machine, the product of which may not match the raw coal size distribution or size fraction composition. This study employs drop-shatter impact breakage followed by dry batch tumbling in a steel cylinder rotated about its transverse axis in order to characterize the core material in terms of first-order and zeroth-order breakage rate constants. These are indices of the propensity of the coal to degrade during excavation and handling. Initial drop-shatter and dry tumbling tests were done with synthetic cores, to reduce material variables and . conserve difficult-to-obtain coal cores.? Cores of three different coal beds --Illinois No.6, Upper Freeport, and Pocahontas No. 5 -were subjected to drop-shatter and dry batch tumbling tests to determine breakage response. Comparison of coal preparation plant feed with a crushed bore core and a bore core prepared by drop-shatter and tumbling (all from the same Illinois No.6 coal mining property) indicated that the size distribution and size fraction composition of the drop-shattered/tumbled core more closely resembled the plant feed than the crushed core.

Characterization and beneficiation of dry iron ore processing plant reject fines of Khondbond region, India, was investigated. Different characterization techniques viz. size analysis, size-wise chemical and density analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, sinkfloat analysis, thermo gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and QEMSCAN were carried out. Based on characterization results, two process flow sheets comprising wet screening followed by conventional gravity concentration and two stage classification with different beneficiation routes were used to recover the iron values from reject fines containing 58.73% Fe, 5.54% Al2O3, and 6.6% SiO2. Finally, suggested flow sheet comprising of two stage classification and advance gravity concentration followed by the combination of grinding, classification, and froth flotation produced iron concentrate of 2.36% Al2O3 with 75.8% yield which can be used in sinter/pellet making.

Sustainability of lignite mining in the Rhenish lignite mining area is ensured by a preceding study of the overall project, with the involvement of all those affected. The supporting holistic consideration of the various sustainability elements is essential for a later balancing of the several ecological, economic and social concerns. In what follows, a brief overview of the Rhenish lignite mining area is given as introduction to the focus of this report, which is on sustainability, starting with the approval procedure under regional planning law incl. opencast mine planning, and extending to concrete on-the-spot implementation, taking the Garzweiler II follow-up mine as example. To illustrate the issues involved, an account is given of some selected sustainability elements.

Recent re-classification of crystalline silica as a potential human carcinogen has resulted in a new limit of 0.1% free silica in bulk powdered minerals. Detection of silica at this level can be expected to severely challenge or exceed the capabilities of existing protocols for x-ray diffraction, the traditional method for free silica determination. Automated SEH-EOS analysis provides an attractive alternative method, with direct analysis of individual particles for the determination of the concentration of free silica, and a direct measurement of silica particle sizes. This paper will discuss automated SEH analytical procedures, sample preparation, and statistical considerations.

In flotation practices, as particles become finer, such as smaller than 20 μm, process efficiency declines markedly. Selective agglomeration of fine particles is a technique to enhance the recovery of fine valuable minerals in flotation circuits. Different agglomerating methods have been introduced and tested. One method that has recently received much attention is to make use of magnetic force to aggregate fine particles. A selective aggregation of fine paramagnetic particles, such as sulfide minerals, can be achieved in the high-intensity magnetic field prior to or during flotation. The method is simple, selective and effective for fine particles and has low operational cost, though a minimum magnetic susceptibility for fine grains is required to promote the process. In this paper, the implementation of the ProFlote magnetic conditioning device in Boliden’s Garpenberg old concentrator in Sweden, where a complex massive sulfide ore is treated, is presented and discussed based on Boliden’s Garpenberg plant. The results showed an increase in the flotation recovery of fine valuable minerals. Zinc (Zn) production was increased by between 1,100 and 1,500 t/a, while salable yearly silver (Ag) production was increased by 1,500 kg. The copper (Cu) grade in the final concentrate was increased by 1 percent, while reductions in its Zn and lead (Pb) grades were obtained. Moreover, considerable reduction in Zn deportment to the final tail was observed

Because the Environmental Protection Agency has identified methane as a greenhouse gas, the importance of de gasification through gob wells has become more critical. It has been observed that the degree of methane emission is closely related to the geomechanical characteristics of coal bearing strata, roof, floor, and surrounding coal seams. Monthly production data from 250 gob wells were collected from the Warrior Basin in Alabama, and many interesting correlations were observed between methane production with longwall face width, face advancement rate, number of gob wells in a panel, and geologic columns. Extensive finite element analyses were performed to estimate the characteristics of the emission zone in an attempt to corroborate these findings. This paper describes an investigation for developing correlations between the geomechanical behavior of the methane emission zone with methane production.

Introduction Gold mining on an industrial scale is becoming increasingly dependent on low-grade refractory sulfide ores that contain large amounts of pyrite (FeS2) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS). Gold is usually present as sub-microscopic particles dispersed evenly throughout the sulfide matrix. Without some form of preoxidation, efficient recovery of this finely disseminated gold through cyanide leaching is hampered because the surface of the sulfide particle becomes passivated and impervious to penetration of the cyanide. Traditional methods for recovery of refractory gold from arsenopyrite ores include roasting and autoclave leaching. A modem alternative method is to preoxidize the mineral using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans prior to attempting to re- cover the gold through cyanidation. The bioleaching of arsenopyrite ores presents a problem in the mobilization of large quantities of arsenic, present both in the +5 and +3 ionic states. Dissolved arsenic species pose a dual problem: they are -1 to the bioleaching process itself through inhibition of bacterial activity, and they also pose an environmental threat. The arsenate anion (AsO2) has been shown to be more toxic to living organisms, including Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, than the arsenate anion (AsO43) (Collinet and Morin, 1989). There is some disagreement as to the fate of arsenite in bioleaching solution. Mandl, Matulova, and Docekalova (1992) reported that dissolved arsenite concentration was constant during a long-term bioleaching study of chalcopyrite using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Torma and Oolman (1992) report that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been found capable of oxidizing As3+ to As5+. The solid products of arsenopyrite/pyrite bioleaching include jarosite (MFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 where M can be K+, Na+, NH4+ or H3O+), scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O), ferric hydroxides, and ferric hydroxysufites (Carlson et. al., 1992; Van Breemen, 1982; Lazaroff et. al., 1982). The particular species formed is a function mainly of pH. Little study has been performed on the effect of solid products on bioleaching. Pesic and Kim (1993) showed that Thiobacillus ferrooridans cells served as a nucleation sites for jarosite particles, which grew rapidly and eventually killed the cell. Most bioleaching studies are performed at low pH&apos;s (<2.0) under uncontrolled conditions. By studying bioleaching of arsenopyrite under controlled pH conditions and at higher pH&apos;s (2.0 to 3.0), the distribution of iron and arsenic between the solid and liquid phases can be controlled, and their effects studied. The objective is to develop a bioleaching process that operates at high efficiency while keeping amounts of dissolved heavy metals low. Pesic, Stohok, and Torma (1993) demonstrated the usefulness of this approach in the leaching of cobaltite (CoAsS) concentrates. Materials and Methods The focus of this study was the bioleaching of arsenopyrite ore by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The parameters studied included the effects of pH, and the effects of arsenate (AsO43 and arsenite (AsO2). pH studies included pH set initially but not controlled, and pH controlled continuously with NaOH or LiOH. Bioleaching results from two strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans with different adaptation histories were compared. Bioleaching experiments were conducted in 150 ml stirred glass reactors using a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans adapted to arsenopyrite ore, supplied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These bioreactors were innoculated with stock cells grown on arsenopyrite ore for 14-16 days. Typical elemental breakdown for this ore was: As, 9.90%; Fe, 18.60%, Stot, 9.26%; Suifide, 7.50%; SiO2, 25.90%. Mineralogically, the ore contained both arsenopyrite and pyrite. Bioleaching efficiency was measured by withdrawing bioleach solution samples at selected intervals, filtering, and measuring the amount of dissolved cobalt, iron, and arsenic by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Because the precipitation of iron and arsenic at higher pH&apos;s would lead to unreliable results, a 100 mg tracer of cobaltite concentrate from the Blackbird mine in southern Idaho was added to solution. Dissolution of the cobaltite tracer was used to indicate bioleaching of the bulk arsenopyrite ore. Due to disturbance of their traditional roosts, caves and tree hollows, more than half of the 44 bat species found in the United States and Canada now live in abandoned and inactive underground mines. The North American Bats and Mines Project was created two years ago by Bat Conservation International Inc. (BCI) in Austin, TX and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in response to the issue of mine closure and bat habitat. The partnership provides national coordination among government and private agencies and the mining industry to minimize the loss of bats living in mines. It also trains land managers on how to conduct cost-effective mine assessment and closure to protect both bats and people.

Any city dweller who has walked alone along a remote mine passageway has to be impressed by the eerie silence - the total absence of noise except for ones own breathing and scuffing of boots on the bottom. An underground mine can have tremendous contrasts, from complete silence to the ear piercing clatter of percussion drills working on the mine roof. Noise in underground mining machines is both useful and detrimental. Without characteristic noises that are recognizable to miners, operators would have a more difficult job operating their machines. Noise serves as a warning of approaching machinery, and changes in noise give indication that breakdowns may occur. But excessive noise is a health hazard. In recognition of this fact, our Congress included noise exposure as a part of the "Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969". As Fig. 1 indicates, allowable noise exposure is established by specifying a time duration permitted at different noise levels. This is the well known "Walsh-Healey" criteria which governs noise exposure in many industries.

The pumice and pumicite review arrived too late for the June issue. Estimated domestic production of pumice and pumicite in 1992 was up compared with 1991, according to US Bureau of Mines statistics. The Bureau estimate of domestic production of 400 kt (440,000 st) for 1991 turned out to be 401 kt (442,000 st) of actual production, the lowest since 1989. In 1992, the estimated the value of pumice and pumicite sold or used in the United States was $11.6 million, up only $200,000 from the 1991 value. There was an increase in the mine, or mill, average price from the five-year low of $11.44/t ($10.37/st) in 1986 to $26.42/t ($23.96/st) in 1992. Estimated tonnage produced in 1992 was 439 kt (484,000 st). Apparent domestic consumption was 642 kt (707,000 st), up 135 kt (149,000 st) from 1991. Imports for consumption were estimated to be 215 kt (237,000 st) last year. Domestic production supplied 68% of the demand in 1992, with net imports supplying the remaining 32%. This compares with domestic production sup¬plying 53% and net imports supplying 47% of the apparent consumption in 1988. Exports were about 900 t/a (1000 stpy) for the period 1984 to 1988. In 1989, exports rose sevenfold to 7 kt (7700 st) and to 20 kt (22,000 st) in 1990. The Bureau of Mines reported that the amount of pumice and pumicite exported in 1992 was 12 kt (13,200 st). It is assumed that these exports were from the Pacific Coast because imports, mainly from Greece, continued to be a market factor on the East Coast and the Gulf Coast States in the United States.
