Epithermal gold-silver (lead-zinc-copper-manganese) mineralization on Misima Island is confined to steep and reactivated flat-lying normal faults in the upper plate of a major, shallowly dipping detachment fault. The hangingwall comprises an Eocene metavolcano-sedimentary sequence that has been extensively intruded byMiocene calc-alkaline granodiorite. It is unconformably overlain by Pliocene sedimentary and volcanic rocks. High-pressure amphibolite facies rocks dominate the footwall and have many characteristics of a metamorphic core complex. Mafic-alkalic lamprophyre dike swarms intrude the hangingwall and footwall sequences. Previous workers attributed the gold-silver mineralization on Misima to the intrusion of the porphyritic granodiorite (Williamson, 1984). This has been proposed for many tertiary gold deposits of the southwest Pacific(Sillitoe, 1989; Leach and Corbett, 1994).

"Use of the Bond Work Index to size industrial grinding equipment was widely known. Bond also described its application for measuring grinding circuit efficiency. Bond Work Index efficiency has been widely used by industry, but until now without concise standard methods, or a formal guideline, for doing so. The Bond Efficiency Sub-Committee of the Industrial Comminution Efficiency work group of GMSG has produced such a guideline, which follows. It covers the methods and provides examples of how to calculate the Bond Work Index Efficiency of most industrial grinding circuits. Bond Work Index testing equipment and methods are also provided. The next steps are: (1) to establish standard reference testing materials and one or more laboratories to serve as bases for reference testing; (2) to establish the accuracy of relative circuit Work Index Efficiency determinations; and (3), to develop and provide a public data base of industrial comminution circuit Bond Work Index Efficiencies. In the event of a sudden nuclear attack upon the United States, it is imperative that vital command and control centers have a high probability of survival. One such vital facility is the North American Air Defense Command Combat Operations Center at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Known briefly as NOW, this installation when completed will be housed in large chambers excavated out of granite beneath the eastern slope of Cheyenne Mountain (Figure 1). The NORAD COC, a U. S. Air Force sponsored project, will serve as the primary collection and evaluation center for data concerning unknown aircraft, missiles, or space vehicles, which might bring destruction to North America. The data will be fed into high-speed computers and electronic equipment from outpost sources - radar, ballistic missile early warning stations and picket ships throughout the world. Electronically controlled display boards will make it possible to evaluate the tracking data instantaneously and to take appropriate defensive action1.

The Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP) has been developed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide a comprehensive tool for evaluating the performance of available secondary roof support systems and designs based on support strength, convergence, cost, installation time and material handling considerations. This program uses engineering models developed from full-scale testing of numerous supports under controlled loading conditions in the unique NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator load frame to determine the support load-displacement performance as a function of the various sup- port design parameters. Both standing supports, such as wood cribs installed within the entry, and intrinsic supports such as cable bolts, can be evaluated. Support systems can be designed and compared for use in a new mining section or to evaluate potential replacements for an existing design. The support design requirements are defined from 1) estimating the failure height in the immediate roof, 2) in-mine measure- ments of support and strata interaction or development of ground reaction curves from numerical modeling, 3) the performance of an existing support system, or 4) from any arbitrary load and convergence criteria. All settings can be saved to permit resuming an evaluation in progress at a later time. This paper presents the updated MS Windows version of this tool, which can be easily installed and run on a personal computer. This Windows implementation will feature a project and application scenario setup where multiple scenarios can be assigned to one project. Scenarios can then be compared on support parameters and cost. Cost parameters can be provided either as individual cost items or using a price grouping feature. Additional support performance curves and/or additional ground reaction curves will be distributed with program updates as new information is developed. Users can also provide their own support and/or ground reaction curves.

The chlorination behaviors of pure iron and manganese oxides were investigated by combining a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique with batch-boat roasting followed by leaching. Ferrous and manganeus oxides could be chlorinated readily, but, in the absence of a reductant, the higher oxides of both iron and manganese were difficult to chlorinate. Thermogravimetric analysis curves were drawn to illustrate the complexitites of the reactions, and the possible mechanisms were discussed. Then three manganiferous materials from the Cuyuna Range of Minnesota were treated by a process involving the selective chlorination of manganese followed by leaching. The results were interpreted in the light of the chlorination mechanisms observed on the pure iron and manganese oxides.

Resin bolt performance is dependent on the size of the resin annulus, the difference between the hole and bolt radii. The vast majority of the millions of resin roof bolts installed each year in the United States employ an annulus of 0.125 or 0.188 inches. Short encapsulation pull tests with resin annuluses of 0.125 and 0.095 inch resisted an average of 2.25tons per grouted inch, with no significant variation. Resin loses to simulated fractures increased as annulus size decreased, with a minimum loss of35% and a maximum loss of 60% associated with0.188 and 0.095 inch annuluses, respectively.

Swelling ground is one of the most feared problem in tunneling. Although usually not causing sudden failures during construction, the very large and long- lasting deformations give contractors and designers the impression of facing an inevitable phenomenon against which there is no technical defense. Examples are concrete liners of up to 1 m that have been cracked or crushed, tunnel inverts that are heaving at a rate of 0.1 m per week during construction and continue to heave during decades. This author (Einstein (1979). Einstein et al. (1972) (1975)) and others (Huller (19761, Grob (1972) (1976). Golta (1967), tienke (19761, Krause (1976). Lee et al. (1976)) have described many cases of swelling tunnels that illustrate the significance and magnitude of the problem. This paper intends to show that tunnels in swelling rock can be built to perform satisfactorily. . For this purpose the tunnel builder needs to know how to determine the existence and specific behavior of swelling ground, how to select appropriate structural characteristics of the tunnel and predict its performance under the specific ground conditions, and finally how to construct the tunnel such that the anticipated performance will be achieved. This concept of a design-construction procedure is the same as that for tunneling in general; it is mentioned here for NO reasons: 1. To point out that design and construction cannot and should not be separated. The way in which the tunnel will be built has to be an integral part of the design. 2. This paper will be structured corresponding to the procedural concept.

Over the last six years, several new commercial families of sulfide mineral collectors have been developed. This paper summarizes some plant data and use experiences gained with each of these product families. The first is a series of products (F-series) based on a chelation mechanism of attachment. The second of these families is a series of products (S-series) based on an electrochemically controlled mechanism of attachment. The major advantage of the F-series collectors is the very high metal recovery capability in complex ores involving Au, Pt, Zn, Ni, and mixed Cu minerals. The major advantages of the S-series collectors are the very high pyrite rejection capability along with reduced lime requirements in Cu/Mo plants.

Cyanide is a toxic species that is found predominantly in industrial effluents generated by metallurgical operations. Cyanide's strong affinity for metals makes it favorable as an agent for metal finishing and treatment and as a lixivant for metal leaching, particularly gold. These technologies are environmentally sound but require safeguards to prevent accidental spills. Various methods of cyanide remediation by separation and oxidation, including photolytic advanced-oxidation processes, are therefore reviewed. Reaction mechanisms are presented throughout the paper. The methods are compared in regards to their effectiveness in treating various cyanide species: free cyanide, thiocyanate, weak-acid dissociables, and strong-acid dissociables.

This paper summarizes the results of a research project whose goal was to provide the Australian coal industry with a longwall installation roadway (faceroad) design methodology that could be utilized by suitably qualified colliery personnel. This goal was achieved in 2012 and the design methodology (and software package) is referred to as Analysis and Design of Faceroad Roof Support (ADFRS). The intended benefits to underground operations, in the provision of this information and resource, are a safer and more productive workplace.

As a clean and renewable energy carrier, hydrogen is an important component of most alternative energy portfolios. Hydrogen combines very high energy content by weight with excellent environmental attributes. Since hydrogen reacts with oxygen to produce only water with release of energy, it can be used to power fuel cells, combustion engines, and turbines, without production of greenhouse gases at point of use. However, because of its low volumetric density, storing pure hydrogen is impractical. Thus implementation of hydrogen technologies requires materials that can safely store and release large amounts of hydrogen (1,2). In recent years, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and other governmental agencies around the world sponsored extensive research on hydrogen storage materials, including those based on boron. These efforts have resulted in significant advances in hydrogen storage technologies. Boron materials stand out as leading candidates for hydrogen storage among the many options investigated. Combining excellent hydrogen densities, release rates, and safety characteristics, some boron materials can hold substantially more hydrogen by weight and volume than even pure liquid hydrogen (3-5).

Tele-remote operation of production equipment from surface will change the design criteria for underground mines. And for ventilation, with machine operators on surface, conventional planning to dilute and remove pollutants can become redundant. Natural Resources Canada with industrial partners are investigating what will be the new environmental design criteria. Additional complications include new mining equipment being designed without standard services and mines’ desire to eliminate conventional auxiliary ventilation. Findings to date show the cooling of equipment’s hydraulic systems to be the most demanding element, especially in dead-ends and when stationary. Consequently, revised ventilation based heat control strategies for equipment are being developed for the automated mine of the future.

Passive treatment of mine drainage using constructed wetlands has been employed on coal and metal mine sites since about 1985. The technology has advanced significantly since then; there are currently over 600 of these systems treating coal mine drainage in the Eastern U.S. at flow rates of hundreds of liters per minute. Passive treatment performance at three metal mines discussed in this paper has been positive for a wide variety of flows, water chemistry, and climates. The sites include a high-altitude underground copper mine, acidic seepage from a gold heap leach pad, and pumped effluent from an active underground lead mine in Missouri.

A jet slurry apparatus has been constructed to test corrosive/erosive wear properties of grinding ball metal. Plain high carbon steel heat treated to a hardness of about 60 RC was used. Slurries of quartz and chalcopyrite ore concentrate were used as the jetting media. Weight loss due to pure corrosion was determined by the linear polarization technique and weight loss due to pure erosion was determined by jetting while cathodically protecting the sample. By comparing the total weight loss with the sum of the weight losses from pure corrosion and pure errosion it was found that there was a synergistic effect between corrosion and erosive wear. Erosive wear rates are given as a function of pH and mineral type.

"For the Hollywood International Airport Runway Expansion Project at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the structural fire durability analysis was completed for a series of tunnels formed by roadway and railroad cells located under the runway structure. A systematic design approach was developed to mitigate structural damage during a fire event and arrive at a practical method to structural fire engineering that is compliant to NFPA 502. To ensure the NFPA 502 requirements are satisfied, the performance based approach was implemented and the engineering analyses were performed for the adopted design fire event. The analyses considered the facility’s unique features including its fire safety systems to determine applicable design fire curves for structural durability analyses. The paper also outlines the process of defining the project specific fire curves for a specific design fire scenario and summarizes the results of heat transfer and structural fire durability analyses. This approach was aimed to assist the owner and Authority Having Jurisdiction to achieve practical decisions to the tunnel facility fireproofing.INTRODUCTIONFort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Broward County, Florida is a major hub facility serving more than 23 million passengers annually. As part of the Airport Expansion Program, the South Runway (9R-27L) Expansion project aimed to meet ever increasing service demands via an increase to runway lengths. This necessitated the placement of one of the reconstructed runways on bridge structures over the existing U.S. Route 1 (US 1), a major north–south U.S. Highway that serves the East Coast of the United States, and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, thus effectively creating multiple tunnel cells beneath the subject runway. For this project, HNTB suggested a tunnel fire damage mitigation system that would protect the runway major structural elements from the design fire event that may happen within the tunnel cells. This paper addresses the issues related to the fire event originating within the tunnel encompassing the US1 highway only, and deals with requirements of NFPA 502 [5] exclusively. Therefore, while approaching the structural fire protection issues for the specific tunnel cells beneath the runway structure, the requirements of the American National Standard NFPA 502 (Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways, 2008 edition) were followed. The effect of the overflow to underflow (O/U) flowrate ratio of a dense medium cyclone on its performance is tested utilizing a 6" dense medium cyclone and density tracers. The results show that the O/U flowrate ratio is clearly correlated with the separation cut point D50, the separation efficiency Ep, the density differential 0, and short circuiting of the cyclone. Within certain limits, a higher O/U ratio results in a better separation efficiency, a higher D50 and an increased density differential. A lower O/U ratio, on the other hand, reduces the cut point shift and density differential. The phenomenon of short circuiting to the underflow, which is especially significant for fine particles, is directly connected with an excessively low O/U ratio.

The design of cover systems for reclamation schemes in tailings requires estimation or determination of tailings materials properties such as compressibility, shear strength and consolidation characteristics. It is very difficult and expensive to obtain truly undisturbed tailings samples for laboratory testing. In situ testing methods have been developed for economically obtaining large amounts of information. Two of these methods are described, the piezocone and the flat plate dilatometer. Both of these methods provide a rapid means of detailed material identification in a nearly continuous fashion for the entire depth investigated. The equipment is described and typical data from a uranium tailings impoundment is presented. The results are compared and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed.

A gaseous chlorination process for hydrometallurgical treatment of a chalcopyrite concentrate was investigated. The overall process is visualized to consist of low temperature chlorination-selective oxidation, followed by aqueous chloride leaching and SX-EW for producing electrolytic copper, elemental sulfur and ferric oxide. In this article, the chlorination phase of the processes is described. Initially, the chlorination behavior of chalcopyrite-concentrate micro-pellets was investigated using a small batch-type fluidized bed reactor. The optimum conditions thereby established was used in continuous chlorination tests. The chlorinated products thus prepared were used in the selective oxidation phase of the investigation.

Appalachia is an increasing concern, as unnaturally high TDS and/or associated specific conductivity (SC) may contribute to deteriorated stream ecosystem health. The aim of this preliminary study was to explore the efficacy of accelerated leaching as a means of minimizing long-term TDS/SC generation by problematic overburden materials. Five spoil samples were collected and leached using simulated rainwater solutions under ambient and acidified pH conditions. SC and pH were monitored during each leach cycle, and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) was used to determine how leaching conditions affected the release of specific ions. This paper highlights the results of both jar and column leaching tests. Among the most significant findings was that for certain spoil materials, the SC in the leach column effluent was effectively reduced when the spoil was first leached with acidic rainwater followed by ambient rainwater, as opposed to leaching with ambient rainwater alone. This suggests that accelerated leaching might aid in the long-term stabilization of some materials.

"INTRODUCTION The recent drop in iron ore prices has claimed an unwitting casualty in vanadium. Vanadium is dominantly produced as a co-product of steel production. The recent shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs steel-vanadium operations in South Africa has cut-off 10% of the world’s vanadium output. Earlier in February, 2015, Australia’s Atlantic Ltd. suspended operations at its Windimurra iron-vanadium complex after a fire caused severe damage at the plant. Since then, challenging market conditions has resulted in the permanent closure of this operation. This decoupling of vanadium production from integrated iron ore producers presents an opportunity for vanadium exploration companies to target single-product deposits. This trend is manifested in the increasing number of pure-play vanadium ventures around the world.The mine production of vanadium is dominated by three countries namely, China, South Africa and Russia, which collectively produce 98% of the world’s vanadium. While the use of vanadium as an alloy in the steel industry remains by far the largest application for this metal, growth in demand is expected to come from the renewable energy industry in the form of batteries for energy storage. This paper summarizes the current state of vanadium exploration, briefly describes the vanadium market and lists sources of future demand for the metal. TREND IN VANADIUM EXPLORATION The most active participants in the current vanadium exploration are pure-play vanadium ventures in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. These ventures are targeting deposits with higher vanadium grade than those typically mined in titaniferous magnetite operated by integrated steel-vanadium producers. The 10% shortfall in vanadium production resulting from the shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs is expected to be partially compensated by Largo Resources’ Maracás Menchen vanadium operation located in the State of Bahia in Brazil, which commenced operation in August 2014 and is expected to reach design capacity of 11,400 tonnes of vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5) by the end of 2015. The estimated production1 for 2015 is 6,500 tonnes of V2O5 at a target production cost of $3.60/lb. This is the first vanadium operation to be placed in production in the Western Hemisphere in over 35 years."
