Liquid epoxy and polyurethanes are an excellent choice for whatever the aggressiveness of the substance transported and whatever the harmful outside influences, maximum protection is required. They can be used as coatings on all kind of pipelines varying from the mainline coating to the field joint coating. Compared with traditional systems like dual layer FBE and 3-layer polyolefin there are some benefits to be considered like easiness of repairs, amount of coats, application temperature and film thickness. The interior coating renders the pipe surface so much smoother that considerable savings can be realized in pump stations. Apart from the interior of the pipeline, the industry is faced with new challenges like higher operating temperatures of lines and an emphasis on product benefits in order to save money. The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy was approached by the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy to present a paper on the current practice in terms of the valuation of mineral projects and properties, given the development of a Code for the Valuation of Mineral Properties, developed in Australia (the VALMIN Code), and a similar Code in Canada (the CIMVal Code).This paper is the result of research and investigation into the matter, in terms of the reporting of Mineral Resources and Reserves, financial reporting practice, the Listing Rules of the Johannesburg Securities Exchange, and various practices in valuation. The paper establishes that a strong linkage has already been established between the SAMREC Code for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Reserves and the Listing Rules, and that, for completeness, a Code for Valuation needs to be developed. This Code will be similar to its international counterparts, with the necessary inclusions which are relevant to South Africa, and will provide guidelines and definitions on matters such as transparency, materiality and competency in valuation. It proposes that a multi-stakeholder steering committee be established under the auspices of the SAIMM, to deliberate and design a process for establishing such a Code.

Design and development of the world?s largest flotation cell was completed in 2002. This was the first 257 m3 flotation cell installed in the mineral industry and represents a major development in the design of larger flotation cells. This cell has a 50% increase in volume over the widely installed 160 m3 WEMCO® Smartcell? flotation machine. In the next few years it is anticipated that 257 m3 flotation cells will be incorporated into rougher-scavenger flotation circuits in many more world class copper sulphide concentrators. The prototype 257 m3 cell, No.250 Smartcell? flotation machine was installed at Minera Los Pelambres in the front of Row 1 in the existing rougher flotation circuit. This cell is followed by nine No. 130 Smartcell? flotation cells. After the successful development phase, this unit has been incorporated as part of a row of No. 250 Smartcell? flotation machines at Minera Los Pelambres. A key to the successful development of the equipment has been the emphasis placed on fundamental hydrodynamic scale-up criteria. Hydrodynamic factors include superficial gas velocity, water (pulp) circulation through the draft tube, and pulp mixing (distribution) characteristics. This paper will review the scale-up criteria of the No. 250 flotation cell, and present a case study of the in-plant equipment testing. The case study will document the metallurgical and hydrodynamic performance of the machine. It will also illustrate the economic benefits derived by incorporating larger flotation cells in a modern copper sulphide concentrator.

Shovel-truck systems for loading and hauling material in open pit mines are now routinely analysed using simulation models or off-the-shelf simulation software packages, which can be very expensive for once-off or occasional use. The simulation models invariably produce different estimations of fleet sizes due to their differing estimations of cycle time. No single model or package can accurately estimate the required fleet size because the fleet operating parameters are characteristically random and dynamic. In order to improve confidence in sizing the fleet for a mining project, at least two estimation models should be used. This paper demonstrates that the Machine Repair Model can be modified and used as a model for estimating truck fleet size in an open pit shovel-truck system. The modified Machine Repair Model is first applied to a virtual open pit mine case study. The results compare favourably to output from other estimation models using the same input parameters for the virtual mine. The modified Machine Repair Model is further applied to an existing open pit coal operation, the Kwagga Section of Optimum Colliery as a case study. Again the results confirm those obtained from the virtual mine case study. It is concluded that the Machine Repair Model can be an affordable model compared to off-the-shelf generic software because it is easily modelled in Microsoft Excel, a software platform that most mines already use. The kinetics of copper cementation during atmosphere leaching of a Ni-Cu matte in CuSO4-H2SO4 solution was studied as a function of initial copper ion concentration, initial acid concentration, temperature, stirring rate, particle size distribution and pulp density. It was found that all these process variables influenced the rate of cementation. A two-stage rate of reaction was observed inmost of the experiments, with the rate of cementation in the initial stage being slower than that of the subsequent second stage. The increased rate of cementation in the second stage was attributed to the enhancing effect of the surface deposit. The cementation process was found to take place by two different rate-controlling mechanisms. At a temperature range of 50?70°C, an activation energy of 74.6 kJ/mol was obtained, indicating a surface reaction controlled process. At higher temperatures (70?80°C) a lower value of activation energy was observed (18.2 kJ/mol), indicative of a process controlled by diffusion through surface layers. The structural characteristics of the cemented deposit could not be determined in the investigated system where the deposit was mixed with the leach solid residue.

Nkomati Nickel JV exploits the ores of the Uitkomst Complex near Machadodorp in the Waterval Boven district in South Africa?s Mpumalanga Province. Due to factors such as the remote location, stellar growth in production, opencast mining methods, and ore characteristics, a number of innovative processing options were selected. Nkomati has undertaken numerous initiatives over the last few years to improve plant running times, metallurgical performance, and operational profitability. Great emphasis has been placed on effectiveness of management control systems. A number of initiatives such as short interval control and time?in-state metrics have been implemented. A focus on improvement on availability and asset utilization of key items of equipment has been particularly effective. While the ores are remarkably similar to the Merensky and UG2 reefs, the relatively high base metal sulphide content and mineralogical characteristics make metallurgical treatment somewhat different to the ores of the Bushveld Complex. The low head grades and flotation kinetics distinguish Nkomati from other base metal operations. Numerous milling and flotation optimization initiatives have resulted in dramatic improvements in throughput, recoveries, and concentrate grades. This paper discusses the metallurgical, operational, and management challenges and the outcomes obtained.

In the last 20 years, In Line Inspection (ILI) using intelligent pigs has become the principal tool used by pipeline operators to assess the condition of their pipelines. New pipelines are normally designed to take intelligent pigs, but many older pipelines require some modifications and special procedures for their inspection. This paper is aimed at practicing engineers and managers of pipelines, or people aspiring to those positions. The paper describes the benefits of ILI and some of the practical issues regarding pipeline preparation and cleaning, choice of inspection tool, running pigs in pipelines, and what to do with the data collected. What are the responsibilities of the Pipeline Engineer ? ? Maintain reliable and acceptable performance of the pipeline in terms of safety and product delivery at economical cost. ? Provide a defined margin of safety for operating the pipeline at its designated pressure. ? Provide timely information on all pipeline defects such that repairs can be carried out according to a managed schedule. What Defects does the Pipeline Operator have to cope with ? A useful record of actual incidents seen in pipelines can be obtained from the web site of the US Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS) - http://ops.dot.gov/stats/stats.htm. US pipeline Operators are obliged by Law to report all pipeline incidents exceeding certain threshold criteria (e.g loss of life, escape of product, cost of incident etc). These OPS statistics show that corrosion and third party damage have remained consistently the prime causes of reportable incidents in the US, with similar experience elsewhere. The bulk of high carbon ferromanganese produced in India continue to have more than 0.35% phosphorus since they are produced by carbothermic reduction process. The low phosphorus manganese ores are depleting fast and ferromanganese manufacturers will have no option but to use medium and low grade ores having high phosphorus content resulting in high phosphorus in the product. A systematic study was taken up at NML to solve this problem. Initially, a thermodynamic analysis was carried out for which Ba-P-O ternary predominance diagrams were constructed at several temperatures to predict the most suitable conditions for selective removal of phosphorus from high carbon ferromanganese. These conditions required a usage of a flux having a high level of basicity, moderate oxygen potential as well as low melting temperature. The experimental results showed that it was possible to remove phosphorus from high carbon liquid ferromanganese from 0.56%to 0.18% using BaCO3 based fluxes at the rate of 16-wt% of the ferromanganese charged. However, the Mn loss varied in the range of 2-5%. The objective of the subsequent study carried out at the laboratory scale was to optimize the flux consumption as well as minimize the Mn loss with effective dephosphorization by using BaO based calcined pellets instead of BaCO3 based powders. It was felt that the handling of pellets under plant conditions would be easier and also eliminate the loss of flux as a dust, which occurs when powder is added. These pellets were forced towards the bottom of the melt for better efficiency. For this purpose, a plunging system was designed and fabricated in-house that helped in reducing the flux consumption to less than 5% and also improved the kinetics of the process. The desired results were achieved within 10 minutes of the addition of the flux. The know-how is ready for transfer to interested parties and authors are willing to conduct large scale trials with them.

This paper summarizes important features of a compilation of thermal properties of stratified rocks from Witwatersrand gold mining areas. The database consists of more than 1000 thermal conductivity measurements, more than 700 density measurements, and nearly 100 heat capacity measurements. Most important rock types and stratigraphic units are well represented. Heat capacity does not differ significantly from one rock type to another, and density is relatively uniform although particular rock types are characterized by distinct average values. Different rock types also have distinct thermal conductivities, but this parameter varies by a factor of four to five. Primary factors controlling the thermal properties are mineral composition, degree of metamorphism, and porosity. In addition, the temperature dependence of thermal conductivity and heat capacity of quartzite may significantly decrease the thermal diffusivity of this rock at deep mining levels.

Control of flotation processes is mostly managed by plant operators, who assess the performance of the plant based on their own experience and other heuristic rules. These rules tend to be subjective or ill-defined, since most of them are concerned with the structure of the flotation froth, such as colour, bubble size and shape distributions, froth mobility and froth stability. These phenomena are very difficult to quantify objectively, and inexperience on the part of the operators, human error, etc., can lead to significant inefficiencies in plant operation. In this paper the development of a fuzzy system to support the control decisions of plant operators is described, which leads to significantly smoother control action and more stable plant operation than could be obtained with crisp sets of rules or manual control strategies. Wet concentrate is received from various concentrators along the Eastern Bushveld Complex, with 60% of the total concentrate received being from UG2 reef and 40% from Merensky reef. The concentrate grade differs from 35 g/t to 110 g/t, and from this a PGM-rich nickel-copper matte is produced. The furnace matte produced is sent to the ACP converter in Rustenburg. The Anglo Platinum concentrators, from which concentrate is received, are Lebowa, Potgietersrus, Amandelbult, and Union, as well as the joint venture Modikwa. The concentrate is fed to two flash dryers that utilise coal-fired, fluidized-bed hot-gas generators to produce the hot gas that will drive off the moisture, leaving a fine bone-dry concentrate to feed to the furnace. The dry concentrate is pneumatically transferred to a storage silo before being transferred to the feed bins situated above the furnace. Lime, if required as a flux, may be transferred separately to the furnace feed bin by a pneumatic system. The concentrate and lime is fed from the feed bins onto airslides and into the furnace. The feed rate is automatically controlled, and the system is set up to optimize the power to feed ratio. The electric furnace is nominally rated at 68 MW and the power is transferred into the furnace using six 1.6 m diameter Söderberg electrodes. Concentrate is melted by energy generated when electric current passes through the electrodes and resistive slag layer. On melting, two immiscible phases form: slag and matte. Furnace matte, containing the bulk of the base metal sulphides and PGMs, is denser than slag and collects naturally at the bottom of the furnace. The furnace is constructed of a combination of refractory brick and water-cooled copper coolers. The furnace sidewalls and hearth are cooled by air drawn through the area by cooling fans. The hearth and matte zone are constructed from refractory bricks. The copper coolers reside only in the slag zone of the furnace along the entire perimeter of the furnace. One staggered row of plate coolers is installed above the waffle coolers along the perimeter of the furnace. Matte is tapped periodically through one of the two matte tapholes into 35-ton refractory-lined ladles, and cast into matte ingots on a casting machine. The cooled matte is discharged onto a concrete slab for cooling and then transferred by front-end loaders to the crushing plant. The matte is first crushed in a jaw crusher and then a Rhodax cone crusher to a size of 2 mm before it is loaded into tankers and sent to the ACP. The low-grade slag is tapped from the furnace through a water-cooled copper insert into a short water-cooled copper ?hot launder? which discharges into a granulation cold launder. The granulated slag slurry flows to three rake classifiers, from which the coarse slag is discharged onto a conveyor to dewatering silos. The dewatered slag from the silos is dumped. The water overflow from the classifiers reports to two thickeners where the water is clarified, and the thickener underflow is returned to the rake classifiers. The smelter is a zero-effluent plant and all the water from the slag silos where the slag is dewatered, as well as the storm water, is pumped to the process water dam from where it is pumped back into the plant for process water use. The off-gas from the furnace is drawn through a forced draught cooler and into a high temperature baghouse. The dust collected in the baghouse is pneumatically transferred into bins above the furnace and is fed via the concentrate airslides. The cleaned off-gas is then vented through the main stack.

A South African gold mining rock-related fatal accident database has been analysed in order to determine rock-related fatality trends in the gold mining industry over the period 1990 to 1998. This analysis was extended further to include some of the individual reefs mined and focused particularly on the Carbon Leader Reef, the Ventersdorp Contact Reef, the Vaal Reef and the Basal Reef. Rock-related accident locations are also presented. A stope rock-related risk is proposed, where the fatality rate in terms of rock-related fatalities per million square metres mined for the gold mining industry as a whole is compared to individual reefs, allowing a stope rock-related risk to be attributed to the individual reef. This comparison is extended further by removing the contribution by the reef being evaluated from the industry data, thereby allowing this reef to be directly compared to the rest of the industry with respect to a stope rock-related risk.

"The challenges facing the mining industry include complex ores and declining grades, together with increasing capital costs and environmental regulations. In addition, future commodity price uncertainty makes investment decisions difficult. Shorter plant lifecycles mean that new projects need shorter payback and increased net present value. With regard to solvent extraction, the introduction of an innovative modular plant design will help to address these issues. The first such modular offering is Outotec’s VSF®X modular solvent-extraction plant that uses prefabricated and transportable modules. Reuse and recyclability have underpinned the design concept. The greatest advantage of the VSF®X modular solvent-extraction plant is its relocation possibility. Additionally, it is suitable for various metals and plant capacity is adjustable through a scalable modular structure. After a dedicated plant lifecycle, the plant can be dismantled and relocated to a new site. This reuse ability offers major benefits for short-term plants, making them more feasible due to higher residual value. A net present value analysis is made for two examples, a conventional plant with no relocation possibility and a modular movable plant with extended plant life cycle, in order to evaluate the feasibility of modular plants. Results indicate that modular plant design could offer an economical solution with the additional advantage of improved overall sustainability through its life cycle. This paper details the recent trends in slag-related research from 1999 to 2003. The trends in thefollowing are outlined: • Annual publication rate • Geographical origin of the work • Nature of the research (e.g. thermodynamics, kinetics) • Nature of the slag studied. This study has revealed that slag research in the USA and Europe has decreased to about a half over the last 20 years and that there has been a significant decrease in Japanese research in this area in recent years. However, these decreases have been offset by significant increases in Chinese and Korean research activity. There has been a significant increase in the amount of work carried out on the recycling and environmental aspects of slags in recent years.

Slags have many useful functions in iron and steel making. In particular, slags are used to remove impurities such as sulphur, phosphorus and inclusions from the metal, and a large amount of research has been done in this area. Slags also insulate the metal thermally and form reactions with the atmosphere such as reoxidation and nitrogen pick-up. However, slags serve other more unique functions, several of which are reviewed in this paper. The role of slags in new iron smelting processes with regards to reduction of ore and gaseous desulphurization are discussed. In iron smelting processes, much of the reduction occurs by the reaction of carbon in the char and the metal suspended in the slag with iron oxide dissolved in slags. The slags also react with the gas resulting in sulphur removal from the process. The mechanisms of these reactions and pilot plant data for these processes are given in this paper. Slag formation within ferrous burden materials affects the cohesive zone and the performance of the blast furnace. Recent theoretical and experimental findings on this topic are presented. In the electric arc furnace, foamed slags are used to allow for higher power operation and productivity. Of particular interest, foaming in stainless steel production is more difficult than for normal steels. The foam index, or the ability of the slag to foam, for stainless steelmaking is similar to that for carbon steelmaking slags. The poor foaming is due to the lack of gas generation for the foam. Methods to increase foaming in stainless steelmaking are discussed.

It is concluded that diamonds are held as cherished possessions, valued far above their real market price, retained as valued heirlooms, and widely used as a form of highly liquid currency. In order to sustain value, both from an investment and jewellery perspective, demand has been stimulated to keep pace with growing global supply while the illusion that ?diamonds are forever? has been fostered to ensure that most diamonds, once sold, do not re-enter the market.

Mechanisation of mining operations is not a new concept in the world of mining. Machinery has been developed, manufactured and used for many decades in massive orebodies and coal mines, both locally and abroad. Because of their size and the huge tonnages available, massive ore bodies lend themselves very easily to mechanisation. However, little progress in mechanisation has been made in narrow tabular orebodies in South Africa. The equipment available for narrow tabular orebodies requires excavations of a size that introduce large volumes of waste dilution. Nevertheless, it is essential for South African miners to experiment with mechanisation and to find a solution to the problem. This address looks at current conventional mining methods and compares them to bord-and-pillar type mining methods. Off-reef mechanisation is also touched on. It then looks at different hybridised mining methods that are being used, i.e. a mixture of conventional mining and mechanisation. It finally looks at future prospects for mechanisation in narrow tabular orebodies.

At Namdeb, submerged beaches are earmarked for sampling and future mining and various sampling configurations are tested for optimality through the use of spatial simulations. For the creation of these virtual orebodies, basic statistics and variograms are needed, but in this specific instance no data exists from which the necessary parameters can be determined. The best that can be done is to use proxy data from onshore beaches, with adaptations where needed. The reworking of raised beaches during periods of rising and falling sea levels in some cases destroyed the internal beach structures, and it is very difficult to determine the variograms. A method is proposed whereby simulated annealing is used to adjust the sample locations to align the data pertaining to beach crests or cliff lines, thus improving the variogram structure along the shoreline in the direction of the highest geological continuity.

The paper aims at clarifying the up-to-now misappreciated role taken by pore water on the design of deep tunnels in saturated porous media. Numerical simulations with a non-dimensional FEM-model emphasise the influence of pore water characteristics (in situ pressure and compressibility) and boundary conditions (lining permeability) on the short and long term underground-structure equilibrium states. These results cannot be achieved by means of monophasic total stress analyses. Numerische Simulationen mittels eines dimensionslosen FEM-Modells betonen den Einfluss der Porenwassereigenschaften (in-situ Druck und Kompressibilität) und der hydraulischen Randbedingungen (Tunnelausbaudurchlässigkeit) auf Kurz- und Langzeitverhalten des Untergrund-Ausbau Gleichgewichts. Diese Ergebnisse können nicht ermittelt werden anhand von Einphasen- und Totalspannungsmodellen. L’article s’intéresse au rôle méconnu de l’eau interstitielle dans le dimensionnement de tunnels profonds creusés dans des milieux poreux saturés. Des calculs adimensionnels par éléments finis soulignent l’influence des caractéristiques de l’eau interstitielle (pression in situ et compressibilité) ainsi que des conditions aux frontières (perméabilité du revêtement) sur les équilibres court et long terme de l’ouvrage. "The oxidative leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions has been evaluated using electro-analytical techniques. The anodic dissolution process has been established to be a seven-electron transfer process under nitrogen in ammonia–ammonium sulphate solutions and ammonia–ammonium carbonate solutions. The number of electrons transferred in the carbonate and sulphate salts suggests that the sulphur is oxidised to a thiosulphate intermediate and the copper and iron released as Cu+ and Fe2+. The Cu+ and Fe2+ is subsequently oxidised in solution in non-Faradaic reactions. The deportment of Fe2+ and S2O32- is affected by choice of the ammonium salt used in the leaching process. In the perchlorate salt, only five electrons are transferred, however observations made on the mineral surface after leaching do not support the formation of elemental sulphur. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis of the mineral surface suggest presence of an iron–sulphur surface layer completely free of copper under the ammonia–ammonium sulphate conditions, an iron-rich surface layer under ammonia–ammonium perchlorate solutions and absence of surface layer build up under ammonia–ammonium carbonate solutions. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processes for copper extraction provide a viable route to recover the metal from mixed and low-grade ores, as well as overcome the environmental challenges faced by the traditional pyrometallurgical processes. Chalcopyrite is not only the most abundant of the copper sulphides, but also the most stable, making it recalcitrant to hydrometallurgical processes. Hence, hydrometallurgical processing of chalcopyrite continues to be an attractive area of research due to the vaguely understood surface chemistry of the mineral in different aqueous media. Different approaches to hydrometallurgical treatment of chalcopyrite can be carried out. These include thermal treatment prior to leaching, direct leaching and direct electrochemical leaching (Venkatachalam, 1991). Direct leaching of chalcopyrite can be carried out in various solution systems, as reviewed by Roman and Benner (1973) and Venkatachalam (1991). Ammoniacal solutions are attractive and effective lixiviants that form stable amine complexes with some base-metal cations while rejecting iron. Leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions in the presence of an oxidant is possible due to the stabilisation of copper(I) and copper (II) by ammonia at elevated pH levels. In oxygenated ammonia solutions, it has been suggested that chalcopyrite dissolves according to Equation 1 (Beckstead & Miller, 1977a):"
