MunroPapers:Corporate exploration strategies by MacKenzie, B.W.The Engel Simulator and the search for uranium by Griffiths, J.C. and Singer, D.A.The Chairman opened the session by tracing the changes which have taken place in the exploration field since the days of the lone prospector who relied upon his individual skills and to a large extent on luck. The deposits which now remain to be discovered are better covered and are of lower grade. A much greater team effort, involving geoscientists and engineers, is required. The gamble is thus much greater -not only are the probabilities of failure still significant but the consequences are more severe. A recent Canadian survey indicated that expenditures of between two and nine million dollars on regional exploration programs are required to locate one significant deposit.The Chairman went on to say that these facts have led companies to regard exploration as another form of investment and to treat it accordingly. This had placed exploration in the context of corporate strategics and structures, which was the subject of the first paper of the session.In introducing his paper, Dr B. W. MacKenzie said that the paper suggested a decision framework for exploration planning. Initially the environment is analyzed to define observable and relevant economic characteristics. The terms of reference for exploration planning and the appropriate allocation of capital and skills are then established in the light of corporate objectives and growth alternatives. With the aid of this information and in the light of profit and corporate risk criteria, exploration strategies can be selected.Dr MacKenzie went on to say that the usefulness of the concept and criteria outlined in his paper depended critically upon three characteristics of any particular economic environment, namely, the return resulting from an economic discovery, the unit discovery Cost and the probability of making an economic discovery. He then showed by means of a case history relative to the Canadian Shield and Cordilleran areas that these three characteristics could, in fact, be evaluated for regions with reasonable histories of mineral activity.The first contributor to the discussion of the paper, Mr Alfred Weiss, mentioned that his group had been involved in exploration modelling for some ten years and were thus particularly interested in the paper. He went on to say that they had experienced greatest difficulty with reconnaissance programs and that he sensed that these difficulties were also present with the methodology which had been outlined. Mr Weiss asked Dr MacKenzie how he would deal with such situations when no information was available but where there was the potential for both exploration and discovery. Dr Mackenzie agreed that the lack of information was a very severe limitation and said that at the present time his methodology probably did not provide a basis for breaking down the broad geological regions he considered into areas for further assessment."

W. de Klerk, Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs, announced the change of name at the official opening of the main entrance to Mintek's premises on 30th October, 1981. Awards for bravery Two men who disregarded the dangers of fiercely burning timber and falling rocks to douse an underground fire, using their hard hats to scoop water from a drain, received the Chamber of Mines Award for bravery at a ceremony held at West Driefontein Gold Mine near the end of October.

A major mud push occurred on the 870 m production level, scraper drift block cave at Dutoitspan diamond mine in November 2011, during which it is estimated that more than 4 400 m3 of mud engulfed the west cave. The production level was successfully evacuated during the mud push with no loss of life or injury to personnel, thanks largely to mine employees being well trained in and adhering to on-mine mud rush evacuation procedures. All access to the west cave was lost as a result of the mud push. Clean-up operations are currently under way to regain access to the production level, to establish the extent of damage to scraper drifts and equipment, and to evaluate what remedial works may be required to resume production. The magnitude of the Dutoitspan mud push necessitated a detailed investigation into the key contributing factors leading up to the incident, which are discussed in this paper. Mud rush mitigation measures in place on scraper drift block caving operations at Dutoitspan, Bultfontein, and Wesselton diamond mines in the Kimberley area are critically reviewed. Recommendations are furthermore made for enhanced mitigation based on mud rush risk profiles derived for different production areas in these old scraper drift block caves. Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the ?fine? and ?coarse? size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: ? Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery ? Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery ? Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for ?fine? and ?coarse? particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.

The primary requirement from a hydrocyclone is the classification of the feed solid particles. Particle classification occurs inside a hydrocyclone by virtue of the relative radial distribution of the suspended particles, based on their size and specific gravity. The particle classification behaviour in a hydrocyclone is experimentally studied in this paper. The phenomenological features of the air core at different feed solid concentrations and the distribution of the solid concentrations in the hydrocyclone are also analysed by the theoretical study of flow features in a steady Rankine vortex. Semi-empirical models for predicting the hydrocyclone performance in terms of flow split ratio, and cut size have been developed using the background knowledge of convoluted hydrodynamics. In addition, to validate the classification performance of a smaller diameter hydrocyclone, the potential of the present model is extended for envisaging the same for larger diameter hydrocyclones. Few thinking people will dispute the fact that a constant improvement in the wages of Black personnel is essential, but this cannot be done merely by a redistribution of income in South Africa.

Pseudomonas spp was isolated from mine water and tailings samples collected from mining effluents and mine dumps in the Gauteng and Northern provinces of South Africa respectively. Adsorption properties of Pseudomonas spp were then tested for the removal of Cu and Co initially from their synthetic sulphate solutions, subsequently from effluents derived from metallurgical operations. The effects of experimental conditions such as pH, temperature, time, volume and metal concentration on the efficiency of the biosorption process were studied. Absorption of 45% Cu (pH 6, 37°C, 24 hours) and 40% Co (pH 6, 37°C, 24 hours) was observed from solutions with low concentrations (0.07 M). A maximum of 73% and 65% of Cu and Corespectively were recovered from the mine water samples derived from effluents.

In a benchmarking paper published in the SAIMM Journal, Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou (2008) reviewed ground control strategies to manage large deformations in underground hard rock mines. Significant differences were identified in the design and acceptable tolerance between civil and mining engineering practice for squeezing ground conditions. Variations were also noted in ground support strategies between Australian and Canadian mines. In this paper we review progress in design methodology and ground support practice since 2008, including the availability of more effective deformation monitoring, new design tools, greater access to yielding ground support elements, and better installation practices. An improved understanding of technical and practical issues associated with squeezing conditions has led to the development of ground support guidelines for a range of squeezing ground conditions in hard rock mines.

Tecflote is a new group of nitrile-based collectors for sulfide flotation. Water insolubility results in some interesting implications for the actual mechanism. It is not yet understood if Tecflote is directly adsorbed on the mineral surface as emulsion droplets or if it is only active at the air-water interface, affecting the interfacial rheology or electrostatic- and Van der Waals interactions, which have a direct impact on the bubble-particle contact. Different investigations including contact angle measurements, AFM studies and micro-flotation experiments are conducted to obtain a better understanding of the actual mechanism of Tecflote. Due to the reagent’s insoluble character, the Langmuir-Blodgett technique is used to investigate its behaviour in the air-water interface and to deposit defined layers of Tecflote on mineral substrates for the above-mentioned studies. An interferometric set up is used to investigate the influence of Tecflote on the film thinning between an air bubble and a mineral substrate. The uranium production forecasting program described in this paper projects production from Reasonably Assured, Estimated Additional and Speculative Resources in the cost categories of less than $130/kg U. Originally designed to handle South African production, it has been expanded and redimensioned using available published information to forecast production for countries of the Western World. The program forecasts production from up to 400 plants over a period of fifty years and has built-in production models derived from documented historical data of the more important uranium provinces. It is particularly suitable to assess production cavabilities on a national and global scale where variations in outputs for the individual plants tend to even out. The program is aimed at putting the uranium potential of any one country into a realistic perspective, and it could thus be useful for planning purposes and marketing strategies.

Applied geophysical methods such as the surface seismic method have been applied for many years and in many places, mainly for oil exploration and to a lesser extent for mineral deposits? exploration in sedimentary basins. The seismic method fundamental is based on the variations of acoustic impedance in a layered earth model and such variations at each main geological interface create reflected waves that are processed and imaged in order to output a clear picture of the subsurface structure. The geology of South Africa was historically, and even until recently, considered as unfit for seismic exploration and the mines were always reluctant to spend any portions of their exploration budgets on these techniques. Hard rocks and high P-waves velocities were creating quite a hopeless model for any mine geologist or geophysicist (if any), unsuitable for the proper use of seismic waves to image their subsurface problems. Boreholes were considered the only reliable tool to derive a geological image of the mine structural features and were linked sometimes with surface methods such as aero-magnetism. The obvious flaw of this methodology was the inability to derive a continuous image from a discrete set of measurement points. Surface 3D seismic is the tool that gives a reliable solution from the initial model extracted from the boreholes, as even the aero-magnetism mapping gives a flat image, unable to show any depth correlation from well to well. The first 3D surface seismic surveys were recorded in the early Nineties only for the gold mines of the Witwatersrand, after a series of serious new shaft sinking failures. The wrong geological locations of these shafts resulted in financial loss of several hundred million rands. The era of3D seismic just started in South Africa and till 1997, all seismic done in the country was for gold exploration with geological target depths close to the oil exploration average depth of investigation. A very important breakthrough was reached when the depth accuracy of the seismic image was tested in real scale as the stopes were surveyed. An error of amplitude of 20 m was usual when true depth was compared with the seismic image predicted depth and shape. This accuracy, completely unknown in oil exploration, started to gain supporters of seismic methods in the mining community but the cash problems and the concentration/disappearance of gold mines in the late Nineties, led to the belief that seismic would be just a very short exploration activity for the mining sector. ort exploration activity for the mining sector. But starting in 1998 with Impala, a tremendous and continuous 3D surface seismic activity occurred in the platinum mining sector. The seismic world got used to new terms such a Merensky and UG2, which have replaced the VCR and black reef. If the primary expectation of platinum surface 3D seismic was to determine and ascertain new shaft locations, as for the gold mines, the quality of seismic data led the mine geologists to require smaller and smaller imaging of geological objects. In addition to the main structural image, small faults, potholes, and shear zone were common expectations of platinum seismic. In a constant velocity environment, what saved the day was the sharp density contrast between the PGM reef and the embedding geology. A good contrast of impedance exists in the whole Bushveld and is sufficient to have enough reflected waves from the PGM main layers to build a high quality seismic image of the subsurface. Recent advances in technology have led in less than 10years to major improvements in the seismic acquisition by using high frequency vibrating seismic sources, but also in processing and interpretation. With these latest improvements, seismic can detect objects of 7.5 m size, either fault throws, flexures, etc. The PGM formations of the Eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex are now accessible for seismic imaging, with cost per square kilometre comparable to the borehole cost of the same surface unit. The economically acceptable seismic surveys can be used for UG2 structural imaging up to a depth of 210 m below surface. Linked with borehole information, 3D seismic today offers a wide range of information for mine development: structural imaging, small fault detection, pothole and shear zone identification. All users of 3D seismic have also used this technique as a tool in the process to qualify their mineral reserves and especially from the category ?inferred? to the category ?measured?. Junior mining companies, in the feasibility stage of their projects, are also quite eager to use seismic as a reserve certification tool, when they present financial statements to future potential investors. The current high demand on platinum, pushes the seismic towards new technologies to be implemented in order to improve the final image. Using surface and borehole seismic together or acquiring seismic surveys with multi-component receivers have been just introduced in South Africa. In less than 10 years, surface seismic by adapting its methods to the special case of the Bushveld, became a mandatory step in mine development and ore resources evaluation. As part of the ?seismic? world we are proud to be a major player the ?surge? of platinum exploration and production in these last years and we will certainly increase our synergy with the mine sectors in the exciting coming years.

The optimization of sample spacing In South African gold mines by J. M. RENDU*, Eng. Se.D., M.S. (Min.) U.S.A. (Graduate Member) A first attempt is made at optimization of sample spacing in South African gold mines. The De Wijs model, which is shown to give a good representation of the geostatistical properties of gold values, is used to analyse the influence of the distance between samples along a stope face on the error of estimation of the stope value. The influence of other factors such as the face advance before resampling, the sample density, and the stope size, is also considered. Practical conclusions are drawn concerning the optimum sampling policy to be followed in various situations, and it is shown that sampling on a regular grid does not necessarily give the best results.

Strydom, M.Sc., Ph.D. Alloys in the composition range of chromium, 20 to 50 per cent, iron, 10 to 30 per cent, and silicon, 25 to 55 per cent, were subjected to both differential thermal analysis and the classical quench method so that the liquidus temperatures of ferrochromium-silicide alloys could be determined. The results are presented as liquidus curves on pseudo-binary sections at various ratios of chromium to iron and as liquidus isotherms in the ternary section.
