Mining of sand in South Africa is rapidly growing to sustain an increasing demand for sand for building purposes. Although mining of sand is regulated by environmental legislation, such as the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 19981, previous bad mining practices have left areas of land degraded and vulnerable to erosion. This study was conducted in the Seringveld Conservancy, where mining of sand has left the landscape with a degraded and unsightly appearance, and where little rehabilitation of the original vegetation has taken place. The aim of the study was to develop rehabilitation techniques for the degraded mined soils on two sand mines, Boekenhout Sand and Krokodil Sand, and to develop an overall strategy of revegetation by regenerating key plant species. Techniques for regenerating indigenous tree species cover, using modified mined sludge if topsoil is not available, were used to develop a practical and cost-effective strategy to be used in revegetation. A comparative trial was used to cultivate indigenous tree species in different soil mixtures. The study is important as it provides new information on the rehabilitation and revegetation of sand mined areas in the Seringveld Conservancy. This study will determine if alternatives could be used to replace topsoil on mined areas where none is available. The study is needed to determine whether revegetation of the mined areas would be possible using indigenous plant species that are difficult to grow. The overall results indicate that replacing topsoil was successful for various modified soil mixtures that could sustain the growth of indigenous vegetation on the sand mines. Different indigenous tree species require different modified soil mixtures for successful propagation. A revegetation strategy was developed to complement and enable the rehabilitation of the mined areas in the Seringveld Conservancy. "SynopsisSilicon carbide nanopowders were produced using a microwave-induced plasma process operating at 15 kPa absolute and at atmospheric pressure. Methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) served as precursor, due to its advantageous stoichiometric silicon-to-carbon ratio of unity, allowing it to act as both carbon and silicon source. Argon served as carrier gas, and an additional hydrogen feed helped ensure a fully reducing reaction environment. The parameters under investigation were the H2:MTS molar ratio and the total enthalpy. The particle size distribution ranged from 20 nm upwards, as determined by SEM and TEM micrographs. It was found that an increase in enthalpy and a higher H2:MTS ratio resulted in smaller SiC particle sizes. The adhesion of particles was a common occurrence during the process, resulting in larger agglomerate sizes. SiC layers were deposited at 15 kPa with thicknesses ranging from 5.8 to 15 µm.IntroductionIt is well known that methyltrichlorosilane (CH3SiCl3 or MTS) decomposes to form silicon carbide (SiC) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) as shown in Equation [1]. This paper captures the essential steps employed in developing Outotec?s new FloatForceTM mechanism. The development of a flotation mechanism essentially revolves around the efficient transfer of installed power, or capital cost, to optimum flotation performance. Optimum flotation performance will be achieved if a balance between metallurgical results, operating and capital costs is maintained. The development of the FloatForceTM mechanism was done by careful evaluation of each of these three areas. This paper focuses on how experience, CFD and laboratory equipment, pilot and plant tests are used to test and evaluate a new flotation mechanism. Validated variables include mixing profile, power draw and local air hold-up. Metallurgical and mechanical design considerations are not covered in this paper. Besides using the FloatForceTM mechanism in new flotation equipment, the FloatForceTM mechanism can be used in existing flotation cell installations, thus enabling improvements in the mixing profiles, solids suspension and metallurgical performance of operating flotation circuits. Results of several tests carried out in existing plant operations are presented.

The statistical methods described in the previous chapter permit the estimation of the average value p of a deposit, and the calculation of confidence limits for this value. They are based on the assumption of independence of sample values. As soon as a reasonable number of samples has been obtained from a deposit, local valuation, or estimation of blocks of ore within the mineral deposit, becomes necessary. The assumption of independence of values must then be rejected. Local valuation is possible only if there is a relationship between the value of a sample and the value of the surrounding ore, provided this relationship is a function of the position of the sample with respect to the blocks of ore to be valued. Whichever method is used for the valuation of a block of ore, the following assumptions are always made: ? The values of samples located near or inside the block are related to the value of the block. ? The values of the samples located closest to the block are most closely related to the value of the block. These assumptions will hold true only if the following assumption can also be made: ? There exists a relationship between sample values which is a function of the distance between samples. We are saying that the value x (z) of a sample centred at a point z has properties which are functions of this point. A certain spatial structure exists in the sample distribution. We are therefore dealing with a regionalized phenomenon, and we must treat x (z) as a regionalized variable. This can be done statistically by means of a model chosen to represent the spatial structure of the phenomenon. We shall see that the relationship between block values and sample values can be deduced from the relationship between sample values, and all local valuation problems can be solved using the statistical model obtained from the analysis of the sample values. It is important to realize that this statistical model is obtained by analysing the properties of known sample values, and will be used for the estimation of unknown block values. Such a statistical inference is valid only if the model developed represents the properties of both the sampled section of the ore body and the section to be valued: some stationarity conditions must be satisfied, and the model with the least restrictive conditions is preferred. In the following chapters, the most important models used in spatial geostatistics are presented. The models which can be used when there is no significant drift (trends) in values are described in Chapters 3-1 1. These models can also be used to solve some specific valuation problems when a linear drift is present. A general study of the more difficult problem of analysis of an ore body whose values present a drift is described in Chapter 12. Note that the area considered for local valuation of a block of ore is often small enough for any drift which might be present to be ignored.

A new approach to the -study of human factors in stope productivity by A. C. LAWRENCE B. Econ., D. Com. (S.A.) (Member) The extent of the improvement in mean performance which could be achieved by reducing the variance between stoping gangs is examined, and it is shown that a worthwhile gain would result if variance were reduced by as little as 5 to 15 per cent. The problem of identifying human factors which contributed towards variance in gang performance was examined in one gold mine. A total of 342 'observations' on 49 stoping gangs were gathered, each observation consisting of a set of figures for 36 variables for one gang for one week. The variables included 'stope factors' such as face length, 'gang factors' such as the ethnic composition of the gang, and 'supervisory factors' such as the experience of the miner. These variables were related to 'tons trammed per week' as a measure of work performance. The findings showed that certain of the predictor variables accounted for 66 per cent of the variance in gang performance and about two thirds of this could be attributed to gang and supervisory factors, that is to the 'human factors'. The method suggests a basis for a new approach to the identification of human factors and is a promising step towards optimizing gang performance.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) aims to harmonize mineral policies and regulatory regimes in the minerals sector. This paper provides a review of the progress made towards harmonization of mineral regimes in the region. It singles out only the mining fiscal environment, as this is normally one of the key issues of interest to potential investors as well as the host state. Indications are that the region is slowly progressing towards a more harmonized approach, and there is evidence that the ?race to the bottom? has been prevented, which is the basis for an integrated mineral sector that the region aspires to.

Currently, in several caving operations, the spacing between the drawpoints is determined by consulting Laubscher's design guide (Laubscher 1994, 2000), a methodology based on the gravity flow characteristics of the caved rock. Laubscher's methodology is based upon the height of interaction between adjacent flow zones, but does not allow calculation of primary recovery for a given layout. In this paper the authors present a technical and economic methodology based on the flow that occurs near the drawpoint and the associated development costs to estimate the optimal spacing. The flow model at the drawpoint was validated at the El Teniente mine, which extracts coarse caved rock. To validate the flow model, small-scale simulations using drawpoint clusters were conducted and results compared to extracted grades, marker recovery, and drill holes to determine ore remnants that are part of the production control programme at the mine. The results indicate that primary recovery depends on the height of interaction, which varies with the friction angle of the caved rock and the spacing between adjacent drawpoints. Primary recovery estimations indicate values from 85 per cent to 97 per cent depending on the drawpoint spacing used. Extrapolations were then conducted to estimate the primary recovery for different drawpoint configurations planned to be used in the New Mine Level of the mine. The results indicate that the optimal drawpoint spacing is 32 m x 20 m with a through length of 18 m. The methodology developed may be used to estimate optimal drawpoint spacing for block caving mines under different metal prices and mine cost conditions.

"Over the last six years, the Kansanshi copper-gold mine has continued to process significant quantities of complex transitional mixed ores. Initially, the ore treated came predominantly from accumulated stockpiles. Subsequently, the feed source shifted primarily to freshly mined ore that generally showed less tarnish with better flotation kinetics, but with the downside of lower concentrate grades. A number of changes were made to improve the efficiency of the rougher circuit and quality of concentrate produced. These changes were as a result of initial mineralogical studies and laboratory flotation test work that were discussed at length in a previous paper1. Salient among the recommendations adopted as a result of previous work were increased circuit capacity and a modified configuration to increase the residence time and the number of sulphidization stages. These modifications were completed and commissioned in 2011. This, however, resulted in significantly low rougher concentrate grades and a below-specification final concentrate product. This was due primarily to higher mass pulls from the extended rougher bank with multiple concentrate discharge streams, and which necessitated an enlarged cleaning capability. The extra cleaning capacity came on stream in 2014. Of note was the development of a recovery model, based on the strong correlation between the total copper and acid-soluble copper ratio, as a tool for monitoring plant performance. IntroductionThe Kansanshi mine, the largest copper mine in Africa, is 80% owned by Kansanshi Mining plc, a subsidiary of First Quantum Minerals. The remaining 20% is owned by the state through the parastatal Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd (ZCCM). The mine is located approximately 10 km north of the town of Solwezi and 180 km to the northwest of the Copperbelt town of Chingola. The mine has been in commercial operation since 2005."

In a pulp environment, the surface properties of magnesite and dolomite tend to be similar, due to the re-adsorption of dissolved calcium species, which makes the flotation separation difficult. In this paper, the chelating reagent EDTA is introduced to eliminate the adverse influence of the calcium species and to restore the selectivity of magnesite-dolomite separation using sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) as a depressant. Flotation experiments confirm that the recovery of magnesite improves significantly in the presence of EDTA. Zeta potential experiments confirm that the negatively charged EDTA4+ and HEDTA3+ species can form soluble and stable chelates with positively charged Ca2+ and Ca(OH)+ species preventing their adsorption on the magnesite surface. Adsorption measurements prove the addition of EDTA can decrease the adsorption of depressant SHMP on the magnesite surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements further confirm the transformation from the surface of magnesite to dolomite in the presence of calcium ions, and the possible adsorption mechanism of EDTA and SHMP on the magnesite and dolomite surface. "The mining industry in the Democratic Republic of Congo has seen a significant expansion in copper and cobalt production in recent years. The greater proportion of this expansion has arisen through processing of oxide ores. The design of metallurgical processes for these oxide ores is based on the conventional equipment and layout for processing of sulphide ores, and comprises milling followed by leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. The physical characteristics of the oxide ores, however, provide the process design engineer with an opportunity to examine critically the principles on which equipment selection is based and to design processes better suited to these ores. In 2015, ERG Africa began a project to expand the leaching capacity of the Luita hydrometallurgical facility. A number of innovative changes to the conventional process design were included in the modified flow sheet, which were validated when the project reached design throughput in November 2017. Of these changes, the most novel presented an alternative approach to mitigate the impact of colloidal silica on the operation of the solvent extraction plant. Introduction ERG Africa operates the Luita hydrometallurgical facility located at Kakanda in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), treating malachite and heterogenite minerals to recover copper as electrowon cathode and cobalt as a hydroxide precipitate. The process was originally conceived as a heap leach operation followed by direct electrowinning of copper, with solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) of cobalt. In preparing the sized ore for the heap leach operations, the undersized ore fraction at a P80 of 625 µm was discharged to a fines storage facility for later processing. This fraction carried with it approximately 30% of the copper contained in the run-of-mine (ROM) ore feed, and an equivalent proportion of cobalt.In a subsequent development, the cobalt SX section was converted to a copper SX facility, the leached cobalt being recovered from a bleed stream from the copper heap leach circuit. The operating cost for the process as then installed placed this facility well in the fourth quartile of the industry cost curve. The initial Luita operation was established in 2010 at a time when metal prices were above long-term averages (copper above US$3.00 per pound; cobalt above US$20.00 per pound), and the drop in prices in 2015/2016 presented a major challenge. The London Metal Exchange (LME) copper price dropped below US$2.00 per pound, with cobalt dropping below US$10.00 per pound in Q1 2016. This set in motion a range of improvement initiatives for the Luita operation. Central to this was the installation of a tank leach circuit to process the discarded fines and a modified SX circuit to manage colloidal silica. The revised Luita circuit reached design capacity in November 2017 and has proven to be well suited to processing of the oxide ore feed. This process design challenges the boundaries of conventional thinking in the areas of leaching, solid/liquid separation, solution management, impurity management, and metal recovery, and is the subject of this paper."

In order to obtain a more suitable separation medium for fine coal, in this paper a pulsed fluidised bed was used to measure the pressure fluctuation, density characteristics, bubble diameter and rising velocity of Geldart A and B particles in the bed by controlling the pulsation frequency and gas velocity, in order to study the fluidisation effect and two-phase distribution of the bed. The results indicated that with the increase of pulsation frequency, the breakthrough point on the fluidisation characteristic curve caused by particle adhesion disappeared, and there was an optimal frequency, which made the minimum fluidisation velocity of particles reach the minimum. In addition, the bubble rising velocity was also simulated. The relationship between them was established using a model, and the error was within 5%. This provides an effective way to predict the bubble velocity, study the distribution of bubble phase, and improve the stability of bed density. A modified germanium recovery process in conventional zinc metallurgy, based on the understanding that ferric hydroxide has strong ability to coprecipitate germanium element, was presented. The relaxed lab-scale experiments were conducted to evaluate its technological feasibility. The experimental results obtained show the new process has great competitive advantage over the conventional one.

An editorial in the April 1990 edition of Mining Magazine is worth a wider audience in South Africa, particularly as the SAIMM enters its own centenary decade and the process of change in the minerals industry world-wide makes increasing demands on the professionalism of its leaders. The editorial considers the changing status of engineers, who up to the 1880s had been held in high regard by society. Alumina and bauxite Economists forecast a slower economic growth rate in 1990, but expect continued increase in demand for aluminum at a 3 per cent annual rate during the decade. Spiral concentrators are gravity-based separators widely used to beneficiate coal, heavy minerals and beach sand. It consists of a helicoid trough that spirals downward in the helical configuration around an axial column. The particle segregation takes place based on size and density under the influence of gravity as the particles spiral down within the thin water layer. In the last century, most design modifications of this equipment were based on trial and error based lab-scale experimentations and empirical approach. The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has gained interest in the past two decades to understand the underlying flow physics in the spiral concentrators. In this paper, we used CFD to model the fluid flow and investigate the particle segregation inside a conventional LD9 spiral concentrator. Firstly, the Volume of Fluid model was used to resolve the liquid-air interface. The liquid depth and flow field predictions for varying flowrates were validated against the experimental literature data. One-way coupled VOF-LPT model was then used to describe the particle dynamics in the spiral flow field assuming dilute particulate flow. Moderate dense particulate flow (20 vol.%) was then modelled using the Algebraic Slip Mixture (ASM) model. Four particle-phases representing particles of different sizes of dual-density were simulated, and the component particle segregation was analysed. SYNOPSIS The effect of conditioning energy on the flotation of gold, U308, and pyrite was investigated in the range 0,1 to 100 kWh per tonne of dry ore for various combinations of conditioning time and impeller speed in a cylindrical con¬ditioning tank. It was found that, when the conditioning energy was increased to between 5 and 10 kWh per tonne of dry ore, the total recovery and flotation rate of the valuable minerals (expressed as Klimpel parameters) increas¬ed substantially. The Klimpel parameters are dependent on conditioning energy, but are independent of condition¬ing time or impeller speed (at constant conditioning energy). The Klimpel parameters of the gangue are indepen¬dent of conditioning energy.

The use of a dense hangingwal-support configuration extending right up to the face would enable greater levels of safety and productivity to be achieved in stopes, and becomes a practical proposition if water jets are used for stope cleaning. Such an arrangement opens the way for extending the use of water hydraulic power to the whole stoping operation. This, in turn, can provide further productivity benefits and significant savings in working costs. With al the necessary equipment being available, such a system could be introduced immediately, although the designs of props and rockdrills are not yet ideal.

This paper describes the extraction of gold, as the anionic aurocyanide complex, from solution by strong- and weakbase anion-exchange resins. The effects, on the rate of extraction and the loading capacity for gold, of parameters such as pH, temperature, ionic strength, agitation, and the presence of competing anions are reported. The elution and regeneration of strong- and weak-base resins will be examined in a second paper. A third paper in this series will present the results of several smallscale pilot-plant investigations carried out with strong- and weakbase resins In cyanide pulps from various South African gold mines, and will compare the metallurgical performance of resin-In-pulp with that of the carbon-in-pulp process.

Flumes are ubiquitous throughout the mining and minerals processing industries as well as being used in the polymer processing and pulp and paper industries. With the increased demand for the transport of highly concentrated slurries in rectangular open channels, there is an impetus for a better understanding of the role of rheology in flow hydraulics. Until recently, design of such channels has been based on either the Chézy or Manning equations used for modelling open channel flow of Newtonian fluids. This has been done for modelling turbulent flow of low concentrated slurries with some success. However, this is not the case for highly concentrated slurries where the flow in the channel is no longer turbulent. Unlike Newtonian fluids, work carried out on flow of pseudo-homogeneous, non-Newtonian fluids in open channels is somewhat limited. Moreover, these results have been published in a variety of sources. This paper attempts to give a critical review of the work carried out on Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow of pseudo-homogeneous non-settling slurries in rectangular open channels. A comparison is also made of the models based on power law, Bingham plastic and Herschel-Bulkley fluids for laminar and turbulent flow in rectangular open channels.
