The Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven has been used for studying coal expansion for some 20 years. During the period before 1940 emphasis was placed on studies of the mechanism of coal expansion and the effects of variations in operating conditions on the results. Since 1940 emphasis has shifted to a survey of the expansion properties of various coking coals. Because additional information concerning a number of unsolved problems in connection with the earlier studies appeared highly desirable, this investigation of the use of sole-heated ovens for studying coal expansion was undertaken. The principal findings, in order of their discussion in the text, may be summarized as follows. 1. Expansion results for binary blends of coking coals exhibit nonadditive behavior, both positive and negative deviations from additive behavior being noted, depending on the particular coals tested. Additive behavior can be achieved, however, either by charging the blend components in separate layers (which indicates that the observed phenomena are not characteristic of the particular expansion oven used) or by testing relatively coarse sizes of coal (which suggests that the effects of crushing on the expansion properties of coking coals may be even more complex than is generally recognized).

Mineral production was of minor importance to the country's economy, and Bangladesh was not a ranking world producer of any mineral commodity in 1980. Natural gas was the most important mineral exploited, and reserves were sufficient to allow a significant increase in its use. A greater proportion of the domestic heat and electrical energy needs could be filled by increased production and distribution of natural gas. Also, the export of natural gas was feasible either by pipeline to India or in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Some nonmetallic minerals could be developed, as well as coal and peat, given sufficient capital investment. Bangladesh's strongly agricultural economy made fair progress in 1979.80.1 The major harvest of November-December 1979 turned out to be better than had been anticipated after an early drought left poor planting conditions. "Engineering design involves, in addition to numerical calculations, considerable amount of expertise and judgement. The expertise and judgement is required to conceptualize and idealize the problem, select a suitable mathematical model for the problem and to interpret the model results in terms of stipulated design constraints. In recent years, knowledge based systems (KBS) have provided the capability to integrate the qualitative experiential and expert knowledge with ~he quantitative knowledge for improved analysis and design of systems. A possible KBS architecture for mine ventilation system design was discussed by Ramani and Prasad · (1987). The expert system (ES) component of the KBS supports the analysis and interpretation phases of the ventilation design process with an algorithmic program used for the solution of alternate designs. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the data and knowledge needs for developing such a system and a formal means of their representation on the computer. A number of ES shells were evaluated to explore possible development and delivery environments for the system. A brief summary of this evaluation is also provided.INTRODUCTIONLuxbacher and Ramani (1979) have discussed the design process of mine ventilation systems and have provided the interrelationships that exist between ventilation, strata control, drainage and material handling systems and mining methods. They have also outlined the importance of correct analysis of the problem, choice of the right solution method and a rigorous interpretation of the solutions. The expertise required for analysis and interpretation phases was identified as the key element in developing effective and efficient ventilation system designs. Such expertise is embedded in the right choice of questions to be asked of the user as well as in directing the user to a wide array of alternative methods that may satisfy the design requirements. With advances in artificial intelligence applications in recent years, particularly expert systems, the integration of expertise into traditional mine planning and design algorithms has been facilitated. These planning and design aids, employing the integration of numeric and symbolic logic and called coupled systems, are powerful tools for engineers to tap the benefits of experts (Kitzmiller and Kowalik, 1985; Fenves, 1985). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the means of representing knowledge for the design of mine ventilation systems through the use of a coupled system. If you missed this year?s Texas State Holmes Safety Association meeting, you missed a great one. On January 23 & 24, 2009, we held the meeting that was rescheduled when Hurricane Ike threatened Corpus Christi in September 2008. Sixty-five persons from across the state attended the meeting held at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach. The weather was 82 degrees, and the sky was clear and perfect for a safety meeting. Evaluations submitted by the attendees gave the presentations, the networking, and even the food top marks. There were eight councils represented; Big Country, Central Texas, Costal Bend, Heart of Texas, Hill Country, North Texas and North Central. Presentations included Workplace Examinations, Emergency Preparedness, Screen Safety, Contractor Responsibilities, Powered Haulage, Supervising for Safety, and Basic Inspections of Slings and Rigging. Mr. Edward Lopez, SC MSHA District Manager, gave the State of the District Address.

Hydraulic backfill consisting of siliceous mill tailings was successfully dewatered and consolidated by electrokinetics in a field test conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the Star mine, Burke, Idaho. A stope at the 2,000-foot level was filled in such a way that slimes and coarse sand were retained in the scope. Following settlement of solids and decant of surface water, direct current applied between buried electrodes created a firm, dense material in approximately 3 hours. This rapid densification of fine-grained material demonstrated the utility of this method and suggests other applications, particularly in the control of slime deposits that cause serious problems in many deep mines.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation into the occurrence of outbursts of salt known to be responsible for explosions, fatalities, and damage in domal salt mines. The purpose of the investigation was to develop a basis for predicting these outbursts based on geologic and associated physical properties of salt. The investigation was conducted at the Cote Blanche salt mine in southern Louisiana. Because outbursts are the primary mode of methane emission into the mine, more than 80 outbursts, ranging in size from 1 to 50 ft in diameter have been mapped. These outbursts generally are aligned and elongate parallel to the direction of salt layering. More than 200 salt samples, both random and selected, were tested for methane content. It was found that outburst zones are well correlated with high methane content. Detailed mapping also revealed that the zones are well defined, with salt crystal size abruptly increasing upon entry into the zone. The intensity of folding and kinking of the salt layering within the outburst zone also appears to increase. An interbedded sand layer occurring throughout the mine does not appear to be a significant source of methane. However, fine-grained salt may be related to outburst occurrence.

Checking Gold Content Experience has shown that in many cases error has been made because the true told content of a particular sample or deposit was not known. Fire assays of representative samples give accurate results and should be considered final in determining the gold content.

In a closely controlled laboratory retorting system for oil shale, a relationship was developed by the Bureau of Mines between the temperature in the retort and the weight ratio of ethylene to ethane in the gases produced. Reciprocal temperature was shown to be directly proportional to the log ([ethylene]/[ethane]). From this relationship a number, called retorting index, was developed. The retorting index has the dimension of temperature, but its magnitude depends on both temperature and residence time for the reactants in the heated zone in the oil-shale retort. The slopes of the lines relating reciprocal temperature and the logarithm of the ethylene-ethane ratios are nearly constant for each of the retorting processes for which data have been presented. The retorting index should be a valuable tool to control the operation of oil-shale retorts, either aboveground or in situ. If an optimum operating condition can be established, the maintenance of the optimum or the departure from it should be easily monitored by use of the index.

This report describes a project in which Development of a Supervisory and Management Training Program for the Underground Coal Mining Industry was developed and evaluated. The project was carried out in two phases. The first phase was a research effort to develop specifications for the program. The second phase was a development and evaluation effort. In the second phase, training programs for first-line supervisors (section foremen) and for middle managers (mine/shift foremen and mine superintendents) were prepared in accordance with the specifications and evaluated by members of the industry. This report describes the project and presents the conclusions drawn there from.

Major problems facing the development of coal and gas resources of the Hartshorne Coalbeds include the complex distribution of minable and unminable coal, high methane content and bed pressure, faulting, variations in degree of dip, presence of natural gas fields in associated sandstones, and legal problems, caused by local geologic characteris- tics, in identifying gas origin. This Bureau of Mines study provides pertinent geologic information for long-range planning of subsurface coal and gas production from the Hartshorne Coalbeds. Pittsburg, Coal, Hughes, and Atoka Counties, OK, have approximately 1 billion metric tons (1.1 billion short tons) of Hartshorne coal in place. The methane resource of Hartshorne Coalbeds is estimated at 9.2 billion m3 (325 billion ft3) and varies with overburden and rank, These estimates were compiled from gas well density logs, coal-core data, out- crop measurements, abandoned mine maps, and the literature. The Hartshorne Coalbeds represent a valuable coal and gas resource which at present is contributing nothing to coal and gas production. This report discusses potential problems and serves as a reference for future exploration and development work. Recognition of these potential geologically related problems prior to development of this basin will reduce hazards and allow for an economic recovery of these resources.

"Information gathered during recent months by field men of the U. S. Bureau of Mines shows that in one State alone there have been 71 fatalities from electrical causes during the last 51/2 years, of which 55 were from contact with mine trolley wires operated at 250 volts or less, direct current. The 1928 law relating to the guarding of trolley wires in the-mines of this particular State reads: ""All trolley wires carrying a voltage of class 2 must be properly shielded except where the same are at least 61/2 feet above top of rail."" Class 2 voltage is defined as being ""between 300 volts and 600 volts direct current, or 240 volts and 480 volts alternating current."" From this it may be inferred that no guards are required, for 250-volt trolley wires, and the natural conclusion to be drawn is that the lack of guards or shields must be held responsible for these fatalities. To prevent fatalities from this source, it has been advocated that every foot of trolley wire in mines should be guarded. While some such drastic step may appear to be amply justified, a closer examination of the records shows that lack of guards is not entirely responsible but rather that carelessness and neglect in the observance of certain well-established simple rules concerning installation and location of trolley wires must also bear a share in the responsibility. In -other words, if trolley wire is installed carelessly and its maintenance neglected, failure may be expected of any guards that have been put up.There are a-number of factors affecting safety as related to trolley wires in mines, among which the following may be enumerated.1. Installation relative to track and passageways.2. Guarding.3. Maintenance.4. Discipline.Acknowledgment is made to D. Harrington and K. L. Marshall of the safety division of the bureau for assistance given in securing data on cost of installing guards for trolley wires.The statement that fatalities should not be charged in every case to lack of guards is supported by the following example: A man operating a locomotive was electrocuted when the trolley wheel jumped the 250-volt trolley wire and allowed it to sag against his shoulder. He was sitting in the regular place provided in the locomotive, but the wire was 11 inches inside of the rail and only 39 inches above it where the wire touched him, or 11 inches from the roof at a distance of 12 feet from the nearest hanger. The accident occurred between two hangers 44 feet apart, and the trolley wire was inside the rail over the entire distance, being 2 inches inside at one hanger and 10 inches inside at the other hanger. A bolt in the roof indicated that there had been a hanger at one time between the two on the 44-foot span.This example is a violation of good practice in the installation and maintenance of trolley wire. In the first place the wire should have been outside instead of inside the rail. In the second place there should have been at least one intermediate hanger so that the span would not be so great and the sag would be reduced. Furthermore, it is possible that the wire was not taut enough even when the intermediate hanger was in place.To provide a degree of safety for men in the mines certain coal-mining States, recognizing the need, have enacted laws to regulate the installation of trolley wires. These limit the distance that the wire must be kept outside and above the rail. Thus, the 1927 mining laws of Ohio specify that:"

Since the passage of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, the Bureau of Mines has made many advances in mine communications. These efforts have resulted in the following developments and demonstrations: • Surface-to-surface electromagnetic transmission of baseband voice signals through overburdens as deep as 600 feet. This transmission was achieved with equipment from the Interim Mine Rescue and Survival System Program, and demonstrated that baseband voice communications could be obtained through these overburdens in the absence of mine-generated noise; that is, when the mine power system was shut off. However, during mine operational conditions, the mine-generated noise proved to be so large that effective baseband voice communications to the desired depths could not be effected. • The development of beacon transmitters for locating trapped miners. This work was again the outgrowth of the Interim Mine Rescue and Survival System. Extensions of this work have led to reliable detection and location of trapped miners to depths of 1000 feet. The system, which makes use of a loop antenna deployed where the trapped miner is located, uses low-duty-cycle, tone-burst transmission. Portable tuned receivers and loop antennas are used on the surface to determine the location of the trapped miner. An extension of this work has led to a call-alert paging system concept, wherein a transmitter, similar to that used in the trapped miner system, is used to audibly and/or visually alert key mine personnel carrying pocket receivers that they are wanted at the nearest mine telephone. In addition, a roof-bolt paging system has been developed, wherein commercial paging and mine carrier phone equipment are used in conjunction with a long-wire "roof bolt" antenna to page individuals and relay to them short voice messages.

As part of its mine safety and health research program, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, has been investigating the geologic and mining factors influencing methane gas emissions associated with longwall mining. A primary focus of this research has been the consequences of increasing longwall panel dimensions, particularly face width, in gassy coalbeds. Continuous longwall face emission monitoring studies were conducted at two adjacent mines operating in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed, where longwall faces were to be extended from 229 to 305 m (750 to 1,000 ft). Average longwall pass methane emission rates for 229-m (750-ft) wide faces were 61 % (0.072 m31sec (153 cfm)) higher at the VP-3 Mine than at the VP-1 Mine. It was predicted by regression analysis of methane emissions data from 229-m (750-ft) wide faces that extending faces to 305 m (1,000 ft) would increase methane emission rates by only 7%, or 0.009 m3/sec (20 cfm), to 0.144 mysec (304 cfm) at the VP-1 Mine. In contrast, it was predicted that extending faces to 305 m (1,000 ft) at the VP-3 Mine would increase methane emissions by as much as 13%, or 0.029 mysec (65 cfm), to 0.268 dlsec (567 cfm).

In a survey of the coking properties of United States coals, the Bureau of Mines has accumulated data on more than 500 coals and blends tested by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method.4/ The importance of these tests depends upon the fact that a greater number of different coals has been tested in this apparatus than in any other of similar scale, thus permitting comparison of the carbonizing properties of many coals. Evaluation of BM-AGA results with respect to industrial data supplied by member firms of the American Gas Association was one of the first objectives in developing this test apparatus and procedure. Early data showed that, de-pendent upon BM-AGA carbonizing temperature, BM-AGA and commercial results agree closely.5/ Because of limited data, statistical relationships were not established at that time.

In laboratory tests using reconstructed soil columns, rubber latex showed good sealing efficiency when applied at a rate equivalent to 4000-5000 pounds per acre. Results of field testing, however, were inconclusive. The ideal situation in which latex would coagulate in a narrow zone two to three feet below the surface by reacting with acidic or metallic constituents of the soil was not attained. Rather, the latex was deposited progressively as it passed through the soil (most of it remained in the top foot), the rate of deposition being dependent on soil structure and composition as well as on properties of the latex such as particle size and emulsion stability. Latex stability appears to be a more critical property than latex particle size in controlling penetration. Addition of excess anionic or nonionic surfactants to latex improved its penetration into the soil. A styrene-butadiene (SBR) rubber latex of 2400 Å average particle size with high mechanical stability gave the best balance of penetrating ability and sealing capacity in laboratory tests and this was confirmed in tests on a 5 x 5 foot test plot at Lanse, Pennsylvania. This latex was subsequently applied to three one-quarter-acre plots at Lanse by sprinkler irrigation, and compared to adjacent areas that were sprinkled with water only. Soil moisture measurements did not enable us to judge the effectiveness of the seal because differences between sampling positions were greater than differences between treated and untreated sections, but permeability tests showed that water flow was much slower (90-99% reduction) within the top ten inches of soil in the latex- treated sections. This sealing effectiveness was reduced after wintering. There was no deleterious effect on the vegetation as a result of sprinkling the areas with latex. A laboratory study conducted in a 5 x 5 x 5 foot box containing uniform reconstructed soil from a New Jersey source suggests that latex penetration into the soil in the field occurs mainly through natural macro openings and not through the capillaries of the soil structure. Dilute solutions of ammonium hydroxide or sodium carbonate (with no latex present) were found to seal effectively in laboratory soil columns as well as in field applications. However, since these chemicals are water soluble, the seal is temporary. Raw material costs of latex at the application rates used in the field testing are in the order of $1000 per acre. "Reports are sometimes heard of one ill effects of pneumatic tools on the hands of workmen. In consequence of such reports, Dr. Francis M. Barnes, Jr., M..D. of St. Louis, Missouri, was retained by the operators to make an investigation of conditions in the Bedford, Indiana, region, and the result of this investigation was published the Journal of the Missouri State Medical Association, Volume 16, February 1919. A brief review of this report may be of interest to all users of pneumatic tools, or operators of plants where such tools are employed.The investigation was made during December 1917, and involved an examination of general working conditions, and a careful physical examination of stoneworkers who had long used pneumatic tools. As the Bedford district is the most important structural limestone producing center in the country, the results of this investigation may be regarded as fairly conclusive as to the general effect of pneumatic tools on limestone workers."

"IntroductionIn its investigations relative to reducing the hazards of carbon monoxide poisoning, the Bureau of Mines recently had its attention drawn to a compound2a sold under a trade name for which claims are reported to have been made regarding its efficacy in reducing that type of poisoning in automobile garages. Accordingly, some of the product was obtained and analyzed for its power to absorb, oxidize, or destroy carbon monoxide; and the results are herein reported.Description of ""Compound"" (quoted from manufacturer's circular)While the circular does not actually state that the ""compound"" protects against carbon monoxide, the inference is therein, because each of the two following quotations is below these respective headings; ""Carbon-Monoxide Poisoning,"" and ""Chronic Gassing Among Garage Workers.""The ""compound"" holds chlorine and oxygen gases in solution with formaldehyde, which unites with the hydrogen to form hydrochloric acid., giving an over-supply of oxygen which burns up carbon just as a piece of wood is burned in the fire. The formaldehyde in the composition of the ""compound"" is a great affinity for ammonia and hydrogen sulphide."

One of the most important considerations in any manufacturing industry is the production of stable material, that is, material which will not change in quality before it reaches the consumer. The manufacturer of gasoline, the refiner of crude petroleum, is handicapped in this respect by the varying nature of his raw material, but as far as it is commercially practicable, he has endeavored to improve his product, and in most cases he has been eminently successful. It sometimes happens, however, that a gasoline that is apparently normal when first made, will In time deposit small quantities of a gummy substance. The present Investigation was undertaken in the hope that it would throw some light on these gums and indicate how their formation might be prevented.

Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine feasible roasting methods for the removal and the recovery of germanium, cadmium, and lead as enriched fractions from sphalerite concentrates. The two types of roasting processes studied were: (1) Batch, with a stationary bed, and (2) continuous, with a suspended bed, Results indicated that either method gave satisfactory metallurgical recoveries} but the continuous process is recommended because of inherent advantages. Final products were enriched fractions that could be treated by conventional methods for production of metallic germanium, cadmium, and lead. In the batch process, the concentrates were placed in a large tube furnace and heated at 1,080° C, an average of 3 hours. During the heating period, inert, reducing} or sulfur-laden gases were passed over the stationary charge to convey the sublimed metal sulfides from the hot portion of the tube to a lower temperature condensing zone at the end of the tube, where the metal sulfides were collected on baffles and recovered. In the batch and fluidizing roasting processes alike, the gases passed over or through the charge and served only as carriers for the sublimates and as suspension media in fluidization roasting. Since both processes depended on the volatilization, at relatively high vapor pressures, of the sulfides of germanium, cadmium, and lead, it was imperative that very little oxygen come in contact with the charge to alter the sulfide minerals. Germanium has a high affinity for oxygen, but in this instance it was buffered by being in solid solution in zinc sulfide.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and in-mine tests on the Racal airstream helmet (Model #AR21) to evaluate its protection efficiency. Laboratory tests indicated that as ambient air velocity increased, the protection offered by the helmet decreased. In tests conducted at several coal mine long-wall sections with face velocities under 400 fpm, the helmet was 84 pct effective at reducing respirable dust in the miner's breathing zone. However, at a high-velocity section, 1,200 fpm, the efficiency of the helmet was significantly reduced, confirming our laboratory results.
