The Bureau of Mines made a laboratory study of the amenability of anorthosite rock ( from the San Gabriel Mountains , Los Angeles County , Calif . ) to treatment by the lime soda sinter process for the extraction of alumina . The study was done under a cooperative agreement with the California Division of Mines and Geology . This report presents the results of the investigation , and it includes a review of the geology of the deposit ( 7 ) by Dr. Gordon B. Oakeshott . Interest in the recovery of alumina from submarginal aluminum silicate ores is stimulated by the fact that the domestic aluminum industry depends on imports of bauxite for its alumina requirements . Of the 8.0 million long dry tons of high - grade bauxite consumed in 1961 for producing metallurgicalgrade alumina , only 0.9 million long tons , or 11 percent , was mined in this country . During past years many organizations have carried out research programs to determine if alumina could be extracted economically from such domestic ores as clays ( 3 , 4 ) , anorthosite ( 8 ) , and other silicate sources . Successful alumina extraction is the ultimate objective of the Bureau of Mines program.

[The blast-furnace operator is often confronted with the problem of determining the size of the materials which are used in the furnace burden. The statement is heard that the coke is larger or smaller or that certain ore is finer than that previously used. A screen analysis of the materials used gives a measure of the different sizes of materials in an aggregate. When one is fine and the other is coarse, the difference is obvious; but when the materials are of similar sire, it is more difficult to estimate the degree of finances or coarseness. In considering raw materials it would be desirable to be able to judge the size of the radio ideal materials entering the furnace and the burden as a whole, by one representative value, such as the average size of particle. Previous work by Perrott and Kinney3 developed a method for measuring the average size of particle in a mass of finely ground materials, and an attempt will be made to apply this method to the materials included in the blast-furnace charge and to the entire burden.]

The Bureau of Mines has developed test procedures and criteria for evaluating explosive reactivity of explosive-contaminated solid waste substances generated by U.S. Army ammunition plants. These substances are produced as explosive-contaminated sludge from wastewater treatment plants, residues from the burning of munitions and explosives on open ground, and residues from deactivation furnaces. The characterization of explosive reactivity is a prerequisite for disposal of such waste materials, which may be contaminated with primary explosives, propellants, or pyrotechnic materials. The Bureau has proposed two tests for this purpose. These tests were developed to evaluate the explosive reactivity as defined in Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), part 261.23(a)(6) and (7). These are the Bureau's gap and internal ignition tests, which determine the sensitivity to shock and thermal stimuli, respectively. This report also includes gap and internal ignition reference data for typical blasting agents, high explosives, propellants, and marginally reactive substances. These reference data were used to establish test criteria. The Bureau has evaluated over 400 samples of contaminated soil, sludge, and burning residues using these two test methods.

A seismic system which utilizes in-mine geophones to detect trapped miners has been developed. Tests at the Bureau of Mines Safety Research Mine at Bruceton, Pa., and at two operating mines indicate such a system has a maximum detection range in excess of 1,000 feet. The system is fieldworthy and portable and requires less than 30 minutes to set up and check. Real-time detection is possible.

Investigation into the expressions of the field produced by a loop over a conducting half space or in an infinite conducting half space are well documented. Reasonably complex descriptions of the effects of stratification also are reported. However, a model which must contain all of these complexities because of transmission to depths of 15,000 feet and also include the pertibation of the field by a verticle cylindrical steel casing loses its facility in the field or for quick, accurate approximation to field magnitudes and phase. This paper describes the results of two field tests to determine the attenuation and phase versus depth and frequency of an electromagnetic wave (induction field). A simple two-layer model is postulated to predict the magnitude and phase of the induced field which does not require sophisticated computing tools. Correlation of the model with experimental results show agreement of most amplitude measurements to within 3 db and most phase measurements to within five degrees. The tests were conducted in a 7400 foot deep well in Nevada and an 11,000 foot deep well in Wyoming which had conductivities ranging from .0025 mhos/m to .25 mhos/m. The surface transmitting dipole had an area of ~ 10 6 feet squared and constant frequency signals of 1.5 Hz to 20 Hz were transmitted through the earth utilizing less than 65 watts of power. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch beneficiation tests on samples from four potential platinum resources in southeastern Alaska to concentrate platinum and other precious metals. Thin Investigation was done as part of the mission of the Bureau to insure an adequate supply of minerals to meet the Nation's needs. Petrographic studies and beneficiation methods including gravity concentration, froth flotation, and magnetic separation were used to determine mineral association and to attempt to concentrate the platinum values with a primary mineral value such as chromite, copper sulfide, or magnetite. A high-graded sample from the Salt Chuck copper sulfide deposit yielded the platinum-group metal concentrate; the maximum grade attained was 0.04 oz Pt and 1.5 oz Pd per ton of high-grade copper sulfide concentrate. The other samples yielded low-grade primary mineral concentrates with low platinum-group values, and/or the platinum-group metals did not concentrate with the primary mineral value.

This report is a compilation of preliminary and, in some cases, more extensive concentration experiments by the Federal Bureau of Mines on low-and medium-grade fluorspar ores from three localities in Nevada and one in California. The work was done on samples obtained from Shoshone mine, Nye County, Valery mine, Pershing County, and the Broken Hills mine, Mineral County, all in Nevada, and Dirty Weather mine, Inyo County, Calif. These investigations were made to aid in the development of domestic fluorspar resources, in line with the Bureau's long-established program of conservation of mineral resources. The treatment methods employed in the experimental work described included simulated or "heavy-liquid" gravity concentration of coarse minerals and comparatively fine-grained minerals, and flotation concentration of finely-ground minerals. These methods were attempted in order to beneficiate the ores and produce concentrates which could be marketed readily, with as high a recovery rate as possible, while using simple treatment methods suitable for small-scale operation.

As part of the goal to maximize minerals and metals recovery from primary domestic resources, design factors associated with minimizing current leakage in bipolar cell configurations were studied by the Bureau of Mines as a means of improving the efficiency of bipolar e1ectrooxidation cells. Initial studies that were conducted in a small bipolar cell operating at 140 to 145 volts and 15.4 amp indicated how design factors could be employed to minimize cur-rent leakage around adjacent electrodes during cell operation. Based on these results, a 40-electrode, 108-kva prototype of an industrial-sized cell was constructed and tested for extracting metal values from offgrade molybdenite concentrates. The feasibility of recovering molybdenum and rhenium from the oxidized pulp also was determined. Feed to the process sequence consisted of flotation concentrates containing 16 to 35 pet Mo as molybdenite and 6 to 15 pct Cu. E1ectrooxidation in the prototype cell resulted in 84 to 97 pct Mo and Re extraction with a corresponding energy consumption of 9 to 13 kwhr/1b Mo extracted.

"Introduction.The third annual mine-rescue maneuvers of the Globe-Miami District First Aid and Mine Rescue Association were held at Globe, Ariz., on November 5 and 6, 1923. The first demonstration was held in October 1922, and the results** from that experiment, both in the practical training and the interest aroused in the apparatus men, were so much more satisfactory than those from the ordinary smoke-chamber training, that Orr Woodburn, director of the Association, decided to hold similar maneuvers at frequent intervals. The second test was held on March 21-22, 1923, in connection with the meeting of the Southwest Mining Section of the National Safety Council at Globe.Place and Organization.The recent maneuvers were held in the same mine and conducted in the same general manner as the first, and the points of interest not brought out previously are described below. By studying the accompanying map the movement of the teams can be better understood.Thirty-three apparatus men were out on the first day and thirty-two on the second day, a total of forty-three men being trained.Mr. Woodburn was aided in directing the work by his two assistants from the mine-rescue station, two local safety engineers, and an engineer from the Bureau of Mines. Local mine superintendents and the State deputy mine inspector were interested spectators."

Work on the Abbott-quicksilver property was part of the general program of th~ Bureau of Mines in its investigation of domestic mineral resources, which are essential to national defense or industry and of which our present or probable future supplies are inadequate. The mine was discovered in 1862, and the intermittent production up to 1947 has totaled around 37,500 flasks of quicksilver. Output has come from ore shoots formed in the vicinity of fault intersections in a narrow zone composed of lenses of silicified serpentine breccia interbedded with shale. Work by the Bureau included the drilling of six diamond-drill holes aggregating 2,845 feet. Several possible ore zones were intersected by the drill holes. Field work was begun in April 1948 and concluded in October of the same year. This report gives detailed results of the diamond drilling and a brief account of the history and description of the ore deposits.

"At the beginning of 1920 a general feeling of optimism was noted in many talc-producing districts. The industry seems to have recovered from the temporary depression of the first half of 1919 and many mills are running at capacity production with their entire output for 1920 contracted for. The imports of talc for 1919 were only slightly larger than in 1918 by weight and probably no more by value. Thus foreign competition has not begun to be seriously felt. Several new companies in this country have been organized, some to operate new deposits and others to continue the work done by others.An interesting phase of the present situation is the possibility of increased use of talc in paint. There is a shortage of barium sulfate used as,paint filler. Since, for some uses, talc is considered second only to BaSo4 as a filler for paint, it is possible that part of the shortage could be relieved by an increased use of talc.A series of physical tests upon all pigment materials used in the manufacture of paints is being conducted for the Paint Manufacturers Association of the United States. It is important that all types of talc be represented in these tests. Producers of finely ground talc, 200 mesh and finer, are urged to submit samples of at least two pounds each of these grades that are available to paint makers with trade name and quality data, to the Institute of Industrial Research, 19th & B Streets, Washington, D. C., where the tests are being conducted.The Talc Products Company, Inc., Washington Building, Los Angeles, California, has recently been organized to develop a large body of talc one mile north of Riggs, San Bernardino County, California, This deposit contains a compact, white talc which can be sawed into crayons. The company's mill, at Los Angeles) is equipped with a unit of the Raymond system of grinding and air separation, and pencil sawing machines. It is reported that the pencils are being successfully used in Pacific Coast ship yards.The mining of talc where no mill is owned by the operator and the consequent sale of talc in its crude massive state has not proved profitable in a number of cases recently noted. Under exceptional circumstances, where mining costs are low and the product can be sold to a mill near the mine, the operation maybe profitable, but this condition is not common. One mine of this type has recently closed down, at least temporarily; but a second, more fortunately situated, in another district, is continuing operations, although plans are being made to erect a mill in the early spring. Most satisfactory results are ordi¬narily obtained where the mine and mill are owned by the same company.The sale of the Balmat mine of the International Pulp Company, near Gouverneur, N. Y., to J. H. McLear, Gouverneur, and H. G. McLear of New York, has been reported. It is stated that a large part of the property has been already leased to the Sylvia Lake Company, who will operate it. ""Cement, Hill, and Quarry""* states that ""the first mining done on this property was for silver and lead, but it developed into a good zinc producing property and later it was worked for its talc deposits. It has passed through several hands, the American Pulp Co., the Union Talc Co., and the International Pulp Co., all having had it in successive periods since 1891."""

Examples of nonmetal mining operations include, but are not limited to, the mining of clay, shale, barite, potash, trona, phosphate rock, rock salt, gypsum, talc, gemstones, mica, perlite, and pumice. • Nonmetal mines comprised 5.1% of all mining operations. • Nonmetal mining operations are located in all states and territories except Alaska, Delaware, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. • Mines producing common clay comprised 28.6% (n = 210) of all nonmetal mining operations.

The need for a simple, very sensitive, and accurate method for the determination of benzene in blood and urine was evident throughout a recent study of chronic benzene (C6H6) poisoning conducted cooperatively by the United States Bureau of Mines, The Barrett Company, and the producers of benzene. A combustion method which will be described in a later publication, end a previously described5/ adaptation of Smyth's method were developed and used during that investigation. The adaptation of Smyth's method gave satisfactory results when dealing with exposure conditions that produced chronic poisoning in a comparatively few days, but it was time-consuming and lacked the accuracy necessary for a study of the absorption, distribution, and fate of benzene in the body during exposure to threshold concentrations of benzene vapor in air. The combustion procedure was satisfactory from the standpoint of sensitivity but was cumbersome, intricate, time-consuming, and required the use of special and somewhat expensive physical and. chemical apparatus. Following the termination of this study of chronic poisoning, possibilities for developing better methods occurred, and these have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines with the aid of Relief Works Division personnel. A microcolorimetric method for the determination of benzene in air has been described recently.6/ The present report deals with the adaptation of this new colorimetric method to the determination

General The underground mining environment has traditionally been hostile and as early mines were developed, coal seams with particularly difficult natural conditions were bypassed in favor of those more easily exploited. Barring the discovery of new and novel sources of energy, the depletion of petroleum and natural gas reserves will eventually force the United States back to the use of coal as its primary energy source. Figure 1 illustrates the trend away from coal which has taken place over the past half century. Today, the demand for coal requires a re-evaluation of all coal seams to meet the needs of the energy market. Difficult mining conditions may result in an increase in the consumption of roof control materials, require greater investment in pumping and ventilation systems, and increase the need for in-depth engineering of far greater safety in production plans. They may also cause delays in mine development and curtail production, all of which combine to drive up the unit production cost. It is reasonable to expect that conditions will continue to deteriorate as current reserves are depleted, thus bringing this factor into greater prominence in the future. For several years now, it has become apparent that in addition to economic objectives, coal companies must set and achieve several concomitant objectives to accomodate society's interest in the conservation of natural resources. Government action to meet this interest has taken the form of two categories of Federal legislation, environmental protection and employee health and safety. The Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of utilizing low-grade phosphatic shale as a feed for phosphoric acid production. Present practice in the phosphate mining operations of southeastern Idaho is to remove and either stockpile or waste low-grade phosphatic shales as the high-grade phosphate beds are selectively mined. Acid digestion studies were performed on uncalcined shale and on shale calcined to remove free carbon to determine phosphoric acid quality, yield, and amenability to filtration. The untreated shale, containing 21.4 pct P205, was digested with sulfuric acid in a single-tank reactor to yield phosporic acid and gypsum residue. Although 96 pct P205 recovery was attained in digesting uncalcined shale, only the calcined product gave satisfactory filtration rates. Calcined shale yielded phosphoric acid recovery of about 93 pct of the contained P205. It was higher in impurities than commercially prepared acid derived from high-grade western phosphate rock. An acid filtration rate of 745 lb P205/ft2/day was attained. This value is lower than the rate of 900 lb P205/ft that is generally considered to be acceptable in industrial production of phosphoric acid from high-grade phosphate rock.

In 1988, at the request of the Bureau of land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 13,460-acre Owyhee Breaks Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-059) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is in Malheur County, OR, about 27 miles northwest of Jordan Valley. No mineral resources were identified in the study area during this investigation. There is an occurrence of jasper along Birch Creek and an associated occurrence of zeolite in some tuffs. In the northern part of the study area is an occurrence of bentonitic clay containing less than 40,000 tons. Much of the area is covered by landslide blocks, colluvium, earthflow deposits, and talus, composed of Tertiary-age volcanic rocks. The upper plateaus are capped by Tertiary-age basalt.

"The discovery of large deposits of polyhalite (K2S04.MgS04.2CaSO4.2H2O) in Texas has led to an investigation of possible industrial proecsses for the extraction of potash from this material. This mineral was first discovored in small quantities in the European potash deposits in or about the year 1800. Chemists fire thought it to be a form of calcium sulphate, but a more accurate analysis by Strohmiyer indicated the composition as given by the above formula.The decomposition of polytalite by aster is very slow and results in the formation of a layer of gypsum at the surface of the polyhalite which retarts the solution of the potaseium and magnesium sulphates. To obtain a substantial yield of K2S04 in solution it is necessary to use large amounts of water at room temperature, for he concentration of K2S04 is limited by the low solubility of syngonite (K2S04.CaS04.H2O) whereas at 100º C. several days boiling are necessary to obtain more than a 6 per cent K2S04 solution even when finely powdered polyhalite is employed.In 1854 H. Rose discovered that calcination, followed by leaching with water, resulted in a larger extraction of the potassium and magnesium sulphates, as compared with leaching without precalcination. During the course of a series of investigations concerning formation of oceanic salt deposits, Van't Hoff and his pupils obtained sufficient data to construct the equilibrium diagram for the system K+Mg+SO4--Ca++.H2O for 25° C. and for 83° C. These data are very well summarized. in the International Critical Tables' and by Boeke and Eitel. From a consideration of the diagrams for 83º C. one would conclude that an extraction of polyhalite with moderate amounts of water at 33º C. would result in a solution whose maximum concentration of K2So4 would be about 3.6 grams per 100 grams of water and of M2SO; about 4.0 grams per 100 grams of water, corresponding to equilibriumwith the solid phases: Polyhalite potassiam-calcium pentasulphate and anhydrite.The fact that it has been found possible to obtain as high as 11.4 grams of K2S04 per 100 grams of water (see table 6) and an equivalent amount of MgSo4 (8.1 grams per 100 grams of water was obtained corresponding to a ratio K2/Mg of 0.98; indicates that the formation of these complex salts is very slow. To be sure, this results was obtained at 100° C. instead of 83º C. However, the work of Anderson and Nestall 9 on the double salts of calcium and potassium sulphates at 100º C. indicates that the diagram at 100º C. C. would not be greatly different from that at 83º C. This slow rate of approach to equilibrium when combined with precalcination of,of polyhzli-,a is the 17,asis of some of the more p:olisinE methods of extracting potash from polyhalite."

Utilization of domestic ores in the winning of metallurgical alumina requires a convenj.ent method of treating siliceous bauxites and other aluminous materials. In the United states there are only small reserves of high-grade bauxite but considerably larger tonnages of low-grade material. In addition, there are large deposits of high-alumina clays. If these high-silica bauxites or high-alumina clays could be beneficiated, either by are dressing or by chemical dissolution to remove a large proportion of the silica, then the potential reserves of aluminum ores would be increased materially. Faced with a similar situation, the German industry, chiefly dependent on high-grade French bauxites prior to World War II, was compelled during the war to Use lower-grade ores. For desilicating the lower-grade bauxites before the Bayer treatment, a method was developed in which the bauxite was calcined and then given a dilute caustic leach preliminary to the pressure digestion. It was planned to regenerate the caustic by treatment of the desilication liquor with lime. As European bauxites are mineralogically different from those found in this country, preliminary work was undertaken to determine whether this process might be applied to domestic materials. The results of this work, along with a review of the German process, are presented in this report.
