Because power system topographies for surface coal mines are significantly different from those for underground coal mines, the requirements for ground wire monitors for surface systems are somewhat different. This paper analyzes the problems faced by high-voltage ground wire monitors. Based on this analysis, some design requirements for monitors are suggested. Finally, results from laboratory evaluation of some of the commercially available monitors are presented.

"Summary An apparent decline in fuel efficiency at refineries, which first became came evident in 1930 and continued through 1933, was checked in 1933 when the average amount of heat needed to refine a barrel of crude oil amounted to 660,000 B.t.u. This compares with an average requirement of 692,000 B.t.u. In 1932 and with a low of 639,000 B.t.u. in 1929. (See fig. 1.) The improvement in fuel economy in 1933 probably was closely related to the increase of 5 per cent in crude runs to stills. As much of the fuel burned at refineries is utilized for purposes other than under crude-oil stills and in relatively stable amounts, it is evident that a material increase in crude runs will usually reflected in a decrease in average fuel requirements. Another factor which has influences fuel economy at refineries in the past is the trend in cracking, a refining process requiring more than the average expenditure of heat. In 1933 production of gasoline by cracking increased slightly, but no appreciable rise in heat requirements resulted as an equivalent amount of fuel was saved in improved technique, particularly in the field of heat exchange.Since the beginning of the refining industry, the transition in fuels has been from solid to liquid to gaseous; in other words, the leadership was first held by coal, then passed to oil, and is now held by gas. In 1933, 54.7 percent of the total heat units generated came from gas, 39.0 percent from oil (including acid sludge), and 6.3 percent from coal and coke. The principal change in the relative importance of the various refinery fuels in recent years has been the rapid growth in consumption of refinery or still gas at the expense of all the other common fuels. Still gas owes its ascendency to its cheapness and availability, and probably it would have become the primary refinery fuel years ago if recovery methods had been perfected. The relative importance of coal showed a small increase in 1933, the first gain recorded since these surveys were inaugurated in 1925. The increase in use of coal was undoubtedly due to increased operations at plants using it,"

Bureau of Mines routine crude-oil analyses of 88 samples from 60 fields are presented in this report. Similar analyses from other fields in California have been published in previous reports listed in the appendix, page 52. Yearly production of crude oil in California and the percentage of United States production represented by California production for 1948-54 are given in table 1. [ ] Analyses in this report are of samples from the fields listed in table 2, with production data for 1953, cumulative production through 1953, and year of discovery of each field. Information regarding the source and general characteristics of the samples is included in table 3 with a summary of analytical and computed data.

Efficient and safe use of mobile roof supports (MRS) depends on the interaction between the MRS and coal strata. Of particular interest to this study are the mechanics of strata deformation as influenced by geologic conditions, pillar extraction methods, and MRS load-bearing capabilities. To provide a better understanding of the mechanics of strata deformation, the authors have collected and reviewed measurements of convergence and stress in one western U.S. mine and have completed pseudo-three-dimensional, boundary-element modeling for two typical pillar-pulling plans. Stress distribution in the mine roof above pairs of MRS’s was calculated to demonstrate how MRS’s contributed to the control of roof block movements. It was shown that overall stress and roof-floor convergence patterns were most influenced by the stiffness of coal-measure rocks and by pillar-pulling sequences and layouts. MRS’s and other support systems play a critical role in controlling the stability of both the immediate roof and the middle roof for a distance of up to 18 m (60ft) above the seam. MRS’s provide unique ground control advantages over other types of secondary support by significantly reducing the time between mining and installation of secondary support. Although MRS’s are similar to posts in stiffness and capacity, they are more effective than posts under static loads because they can yield and still maintain loads at near-peak capacity, whereas posts fail and loose their ability to limit mine roof deformation.

"The recent discovery and exploitation of petroleum territory have resulted in the enactment of new petroleum laws in most of the South American Republics. The activities in the discovery of these new fields were engendered by the knowledge of the fact that present producing fields must within well defined periods be exhausted. Oil operators were willing to take the initial steps in exploitation in the absence of legislation that applied strictly to petroleum operations. The enactment of modern legislation in many of these Republics encouraging and protect¬ing exploitations may cause tremendous oil activities in these countries, and the results may be comparable with the magnitude of the undertakings and the prestige of the companies now entering this territory.These, oil fields are admirably located for convenient distribution of petroleum by water to all the Nations using oil as fuel for shipping and industrial concerns. The oil markets of the western coast of South America will derive immense benefits from the Panama Canal. This navigation route brings these markets into direct ocean shipment with the Atlantic coasts of the Western and Eastern Hemispheres.One deterrent to oil production in the Republics of South America is the want of inland. transportation facilities, but the recent laws of these Republics without exception provide for acquiring rights of way for pipe lines and other modes of transportation; and doubtless the great interests and. syndicates already operating in these regions will, as production increases, provide ample pipe line transportation sufficient to convey to the coast the oil produced. It way be assumed, from the legal guarantees afforded, and from operating equipment and machinery that are now being concentrated that refineries will be erected at shipping points for the purpose of making these petroleum products accessible to the world."

This report is concerned with the conditions affecting the methods and costs of mining phosphate rock in that part of the western phosphate field that is in Bear Lake and Caribou Counties in southeastern Idaho ( see fig . 1) . The area was selected because it contains most of the known phosphate reserve and because its geology has been studied more extensively than that of other sections . Deposits of phosphate rock on public land may be leased from the Government under the terms of the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 , subject to the regulations of the Bureau of Land Management . Public interest in phosphate production is growing , as shown by an increasing number of applications for leases . Two mines are being operated steadily for the production of phosphate rock by companies that have also the necessary processing plants for the manufacture of fertilizer . Total western phosphate - rock production in 1947 is reported by the Economics Statistics and Division of the Federal Bureau of Mines to have been 1,193,000 long tons , mined in Idaho , Montana , and Wyoming . The average grade was 30.7 percent of contained phosphorus pentoxide (P205 ) ; the average value at the mines was $5.67 per long ton . Idaho contributed 905,000 tons , or somewhat more than 75 percent of western production . Western fertilizer plants took 23 percent of total production; 76 percent was exported . Strip mining accounted for 75 percent of the Idaho tonnage; the remainder was stoped from underground workings . Rock must contain a minimum of 30 percent P205 to be commercially useful for the production of superphosphate fertilizer by current acid treatment methods . Research by corporations and Government agencies has been directed toward the use of lower - grade ore . So far , only by smelting can rock containing as little as 25 percent P205 be used economically . Any development of processing or use pattern that would render the mining of , say , 20 percent rock profitable would have important effects in reducing the unit cost of mining . In the search for metallurgical improvements , consideration should be given to the saving of valuable components of the rock, such as vanadium and fluorine , both of which are present in the beds .

"While the National Academy of Sciences has stated that gravimetric sampling technology for compliance purposes is adequate, research into various aspects of respirable dust control require data on many other parameters of airborne dust. These, in turn, have created the need to use many instruments, other than personal gravimetric samplers, in mi ne environments for dust measurement. There is a need to evaluate the performance of these instruments under conditions of potential use.As part of research in the Generic Technology Center for Respirable Dust, cascade impactors, gravimetric personal samplers and gravimetric samplers collecting dust using isokinetic sampling principles were employed for dust measurements under identical conditions in a mine airway. During the course of the experiments, 8-stage cascade impactors and gravimetric samplers drawing air isokinetically were located in the center of a mine airway at various stations. Two types of data were examined - concentration of dust and size distribution of the dust collected in the samplers. The data show that the amount of dust collected by an impactor is less than half the amount collected isokinetically. The size distributions of the dusts collected from the two instruments, though comparable, show a consistent difference in median diameters. The cause for this bias is examined.The paper presents and discusses the results of the tests, including the concentrations and size distributions obtained from the two instruments for different experimental conditions. There is a need to document the performance of various dust measuring devices in mine airflow conditions.INTRODUCTIONThe sampling of airborne dust in mines can be done for several purposes. Traditionally, dust sampling has been restricted to the gravimetric measurement of airborne respirable dust to comply with the regulations governing the mining industry. Instruments such as the MRE gravimetric sampler, and personal gravimetric samplers that have collection characteristics similar to the human respiratory system have been in use for the last two decades. Presently available instrumentation for the purpose of regulation have been considered adequate by the Committee on the Measurement and Control of Respirable Dust in Mines (National Academy of Sciences, 1980),"

"A set of fracture profile photomicrographs is presented for fractures generated under mixed mode loading of the Pittsburgh coal. The fractal dimension is used· to characterize the irregularity of these profiles and a tentative relationship is presented between the fractal dimension and the fracture toughness. Surface roughness appears to depend solely on the stress intensity and no other dependence was observed with fracture loading mode, loading rate· or specimen orientation. Observations of crack bifurcations.in fracture profiles can indicate crack growth direction whereas direct surface observations generally cannot in materials such as rock and coal.1 INTRODUCTIONThe production of fine fragments of material as a result of some loading event occurs in many industrial processes. In crushing and grinding, the efficient production of fine fragments is the desired end result; .however, in coal cutting, the production of fine fragments may lead to high levels of respirable dust in the immediate atmosphere with the danger of human lung diseases. Two of the most important sources of fragments in the 1 to 10 micron size range during a cutting process are 1) severe crushing in a zone near the loading tool and 2) subsequent shearing along major crack surfaces that form the larger fragments during material reduction. These and other sources of fine fragments generation are discussed by Roepke (1984) and Zipf and Bieniawski (1986). The physical character of the nearly created major crack surfaces is believed to have a strong influence on the amount of fine fragment generation that occurs during subsequent shearing movement. When the major large fragments initially form, they are ""locked"" in place by the irregular character of the new fracture surface. Only after some relative motion has occurred between fragments are they actually liberated, and the net result is the formation of additional fine fragments. The fine fragmentation is not necessarily limited to the shearing of high points from the macrocrack surf ace since material remaining in the wake of the crack tip is damaged to a substantial depth below the actual crack surface."

An investigation was conducted on the conditions affecting the precipitation of aluminum by autoclaving synthetic solutions containing Na2SO4, Al2(SO4)3, H2SO4, and H2O. Virtually all of the alumina could be precipitated as natroalunite (NaAl3(SO4)2 (OH)6). This product could be readily filtered and dried. Results are reported in terms of alumina precipitated in this compound and not in terms of alumina itself. Solutions of ~ 0.30, ~ 0.60, and ~ 0.80 mole/liter A1203 and various concentrations of H2SO4 and Na2S04 were investigated. The optimum time and temperature for autoclaving were 20 to 30 minutes at 200° C. The highest yields of natroalunite were obtained from solutions containing little H2SO4 and ~ 2 moles Na2SO4 per mole A1202. Acid in quantities of 0.3 to 0.5 mole/mole of alumina in solution depressed the yield to 90 percent or less. In differential thermal analysis, at 1,000° C the natroalunite precipitate decomposed without melting to yield SO, and SO2 gases, a solid composed of Na2SO4, and gamma and alpha Al203. Continued heating to 1,200° C produced No SO, and alpha A1303. Water-leaching of this product removed the Na2S04 and left a final residue of alpha A1203.

"Abstract — Concentrations of tailpipe pollutants from diesel-powered. underground mine vehicles change over time due to engine wear and the need for maintenance. Since this deterioration in pollutant emissions may adversely affect the air quality in an underground mine, it should be monitored and controlled. This paper presents decision criteria concerning when to service a mine vehicle diesel engine. These criteria, based on mine air and tailpipe concentration measurements, are designed to maintain the tailpipe concentrations within limits that assure satisfactory mine air quality.Application of the deterioration criteria to mine vehicle emissions involves:establishing, for each pollutant, the allowable deterioration factor, anddetermining the deterioration factor, from the mine air and tailpipe diesel pollutant measurements, and the mine air threshold limit values (TLVs).If the deterioration factor is greater than or equal to the allowable deterioration factor the vehicle is removed from service for maintenance.An analysis applying the criteria to measurements made in an underground coal mine is presented. The tailpipe pollutant concentration data were collected using the Emissions Mea-surement Apparatus (EMA) developed by Michigan Techno-logical University. Since the TLV for diesel particulate matter (DPM) has not yet been established assumed mine air DPMTLVs of 15 and 1.0 mg/m3 were used in the analysis. For all of the diesel haulage vehicles included in the analysis. DPM was found to be the critical pollutant (the one most in need of control). For an assumed mine air DPM TLV of 15 mg/m3 none of the diesel haulage vehicles would he removed from service. However reducing the DPM TLV to 1.0 mg/m3 would make it necessary to remove two of the three vehicles tested from service."

Reaching movements are planned and subsequently executed [1] using visual and somatosensory feedbacks [2], where absence of visual feedback is known to increase endpoint variability [3]. Visual occlusion decreases the ability to make rapid online compensatory movements, which results in initial radial deviations that are highly correlated with radial dispersion at the target. Perturbations of rapid, visually-guided reaches are compensated on-line and result in endpoint dispersions poorly correlated with initial deviations, emphasizing the strong effect of visual feedback in temporally-constrained reaching tasks. In control conditions (no vibration), these uncompensated, rapid reaches serve as estimates of the individual’s intended trajectory. When ride motion is present, trajectories of rapid, visually-occluded reaches provide a measure of the natural biodynamic response of the cantilevered spine-arm-hand linkage. These intended movement trajectories and the biodynamic response (vibration feedthrough) are used to predict the effect of ride motion on the performance of rapid reaching tasks. Goals of this study are to investigate the influences of vehicle motion on human reaching and pointing, and to reveal movement strategies used in visually-occluded reaching tasks. Methods A six degree of freedom human-rated Ride Motion Simulator (RMS) was used to generate a dynamic vehicle environment. Participants performed discrete, rapid pointing tasks to targets presented on three touchpanel displays under stationary and random whole-body vibration. Reach instructions included successfully reaching identical circular targets (Ø = 0.25”) with the right index fingertip as fast as possible. Targets were presented on resistive-touch displays mounted approximately 60 cm from the participant’s nasion. The touchpanel displays were located in the forward and lateral directions at eye level, and forward at 45° of elevation. These displays measured the spatial error of the reach destination. A ten-camera VICON motion capture system recorded the upper body kinematics of the participant. Reflective markers were placed on the participant’s torso, head, and arms. Initial kinematics of the fingertip (i.e. time and magnitude peak tangential velocity) and tangential velocity at target were used to estimate the planned endpoint of the reach. Results and Discussion Ride motion resulted in increased endpoint variability compared to reaches performed in the stationary condition. Reaches to the elevated touchpanel consistently resulted in the largest variability across all motion conditions, suggesting that a vehicle occupant would not be capable of accurately activating a control in that location. Principal axes of endpoint ellipses were along and perpendicular to the direction of fingertip movements. This paper outlines the concepts used to correlate rock failure with microseismic events and presents examples of microseismic monitoring together with associated computer modelling of the rock failure. This study is motivated by the need to develop improved ways to reduce ground control hazards in underground mining. Toward this end we present and compare results from numerical modelling and micro- seismic monitoring studies conducted at several different mine sites. Emphasis is on integrating results obtained with these tools to characterize, and thus increase our understanding of, important mine deformation processes. The ultimate goal is to use this knowledge to design mine structures, and develop mitigation measures, that minimize specific ground control hazards.

"Investigations of the infrared spectra of crystalline and amorphous silica particles of different sizes (0.05, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, and 260 um) in the range of 400-4000 cm-1 using Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy we reported. The change in the intensity I of the signal with porosity e of powders follows the e/(1 - e) dependence for strong bands and e dependence for weaker bands as pre¬dicted by the theory of McGovern of al. For strong bands, I also follows the empirical relation I ~ D-n, where D Is the particle diameter in cm and n = 0.34-0.42. The anomalous positive frequency dependence of I on the modulation fre¬quency f observed for the stronger bands in the 45-pm and 260-pm particles Is believed to result from saturation. Some observations on the effect of changing the background from (carbon black) powder to pellet are also made.INTRODUCTIONSince the publication of the Rosencwaig—Gersho (RG) theory on the photoacoustic effect in solids (1, 2), Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy (FTIR/PAS) has become an important technique for obtaining the IR spectra of surfaces and materials in their natural state (1-12). In the one-dimensional RG theory, the incident radiation, modulated at frequency f, is absorbed by the material to a depth pp = 1/B (B = absorption coefficient), thus setting up temperature variations in the material. These variations heat the adjacent gas/solid interface leading to the pressure fluctuations of the gas above the sample, which in turn is detected by microphone as a PA signal. The thermal wave originating from no deeper than the thermal diffusion length(2k/npcf) 1/2 in the material contributes to the PA signal (here k, p, and c are respectively the thermal conductivity, density, and specific heat of the material). Since u2, can be varied by varying the experimental parameter f, depth pro¬filing by PAS is possible and a number of papers on this subject have appeared in recent years (2-10). Another im¬portant phenomenon is saturation which occurs when the material thickness 1> u> us (1-12).The original promise of PAS for use with powder samples, without the need to ""prepare"" samples as in FTIR spectros-copy, has not yet been fully realized because of several com¬plications. Theoretical works by Monchalin et al. (13) and McGovern et al (14) showed that the interstial gas in the voids of the powders can act as amplifier and that, for the same mass, a finer powder is expected to yield higher PA signal than a coarser powder. Although in a number of earlier studies (15-21) an increase of PA signal with decreasing particle size has been observed, a quantitative check on the equations developed by McGovern et al. (14) has not yet been made. It is necessary to understand the particle size effects in PAS if the promise of PAS for IR spectroscopy of powders is to be realized. In this paper, we report results of a detailed study on the PAS of silica powders for the particle size range of 0.05-260 um and compare the results with theory (14). We have also investigated the frequency dependence of the variousIR modes in these powders and show that the saturation phenomenon affects at least some of the observations. Some observations on the effects of pellet vs powder background are also reported (22-24). Details of these findings are presented and discussed in this paper."

Wettability measurements and laboratory waterflood tests were compared under a wide variety of conditions. Experiments were conducted with synthetic and natural crude oils, treated and untreated outcrop and oilfield sandstone cores, and synthetic brines with and without caustic, detergent, or phosphate additives. Measurements were made on equilibrated and unequilibrated systems at 77° and 150° F. Wettability was evaluated by the Bureau of Mines method from capillary pressure curves determined with a centrifuge. The waterflood data were fitted by empirical curves; the parameters of the curves characterize primary and subordinate production and also give the ultimate oil recovery. Results showed that wettability measurements at 77° F were useful predictors of recovery efficiency in waterflood tests run at both temperatures. Oil recovery in the early stages of waterflooding increased with increasing water wettability; however, the ultimate recovery was highest at a slightly oil-wet condition. The oil displaced at highest speed in the centrifuge was correlated with ultimate recovery in waterflood tests. Chemical additives to the brine sometimes lowered wettability and also sometimes improved waterflood recovery, but wettability and recovery were not correlated with additives present. The effect of additives on recovery in waterflooding was best seen in water-oil ratio curves.

"Under the organic act establishing it, the Bureau of Mines is authorized to conduct investigations designed to improve health and safety conditions in the mineral industry and to promote efficient development and utilization of our mineral resources. The field of the Bureau's activity, therefore, begins with the commercial development of mineral deposits and ends with the production and utilization of the final marketable product.In order to serve more efficiently the various sections of the country, the Bureau has established, in addition to its main offices at Washington, D. C., eleven field experiment stations, three field offices and several mine rescue cars and mina rescue stations. These field branches are so distributed as to cover most of the mining districts of this country, including Alaska. The field service in general deals with specific experimental problems, cooperative work with non-governmental institutions, and mina rescue work, while the Washington office is the administrative head and is responsible for the distribution of general information, the chiefs of the technical and administrative divisions of the Bureau being stationed there.The Bureau is prohibited by law from doing work exclusively for the benefit of any private company or individual. Generally speaking, the Bureau does no assaying, ore testing, or similar service work for the benefit of private companies or individuals. In response to requests for work of this sort a list of assay and ore testing laboratories is supplied. In referring inquiries to com-mercial laboratories or consulting engineers, care is taken to mention several names so as to avoid designating any one establishment or engineer."

The Bureau of Mines investigated a glass containing approximately 17 percent lithia and 83 percent silica to establish a method of devitrifying cast and rolled shapes. Glass shapes with high strength were made by melting, forming, and rapid cooling of the composition, and the shapes subsequently were converted to a crystalline condition by heat treatment. The best devitrification schedule included rapid cooling of the glass to below 300° C, followed by reheating at a rate of 50° to 400° C per hour, depending on the size of the shape, followed by a of 60 to 70 hours at 500° C and another period of 15 hours at 800° C. attempts to use faster heating rates or slow cooling to accomplish devitrification in deformation of the shapes. The crystalline shapes had flexural strengths that averaged over 33,000 psi, achieved with an annealing time of 60 to 70 hours at 500° C.

"The U.S. Bureau of Mines established on August 15, 1983, The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust (Dust Center) within the Mining and Mineral Resource Research Institutes (MRIs) at The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University, and in association with participating MRIs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Minnesota. In 1986, Michigan Technological University (MTU) was awarded a grant through the Dust Center. The center's research program has been developed with recognition of the stated objective of the Federal Mine Safety and Health law, which is ""... (to) permit each miner the opportunity to work underground during the period of his entire adult working life without incurring any disability from pneumoconiosis of any other occupation-related diseases..."" The Dust Center's program is designed to foster an accelerated attack through fundamental research on problems confronting the control of respirable dust in mines. The interactions of the universities and the research program components in the characterization of coal seams, respirable dust particles and the workers lungs are depicted in the logo of the Dust Center.The primary goal of the Dust Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling, and the interaction of dust and lungs. The Dust Center's research program explores these concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniques that are consistent with the fundamental dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. The work concentrates on: (1) control of dust generation; (2) dilution, dispersion and collection of dust in mine airways; (3) characterization of dust particles; (4) interaction of dust and lungs; and (5) the relationship of the mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. The fundamental aspects of this work are applicable to the control of respirable dust problems in both hard rock mines and coal mines, and to other dusts such as those generated by diesel equipment. Achieving the Dust Center's goals also involves the training of engineers and scientists, graduate students, and undergraduate students through their respective institutions, and technology transfer to industry. The distribution of personnel in the various universities are presented in Table 1. A directory of Dust Center principal investigators is presented in Appendix 1. A summary of degrees granted and mineral sector employment is presented in Table 2. The subjects of theses developed under the various research projects are presented separately in Volume 7. The center research is fully compatible and complementary with the existing and ongoing U.S. Bureau of Mines activities (see Volume 2). Additionally, the expertise and facilities of the NIOSH--Division of Respirable Disease studies are available as a result of the existing relationship between NIOSH and West Virginia University. Figure 1, Respirable Dust Center Projects and Activities, presents the various projects in the five major areas of investigation and the scope of characterized dust samples, the suite of tests, the sampling and dust generation methods, and the size, chemical and mineralogical analysis performed in the center. Table 3 presents a summary distribution of the 95 publications and presentations that have emanated from the center. In addition there are more than thirty presentations made at each annual Dust Center review meeting. The titles, authors and location of presentation for publications supported by the Dust Center are presented in separate publication volumes for 1984 (Volume 3), 1985 (Volume 4), 1986 (Volume 5) and 1987 (Volume 6)."

Because of U.S. dependency on imported critical metals, the Bureau of Mines has conducted research to evaluate the possible substitution of nitrided low-alloy steels for higher chromium-containing alloys. The corrosion data for nitrided steels are limited primarily to the Soviet literature. The objective of this study was to determine the corrosion properties of six commercially nitrided low-alloy steels in a 5-wt % NaCl solution at pH 4. Weight-loss tests indicated that, in deaerated test solutions, most of the nitrided steels were less corrosion resist-ant than nontreated steels. However, electrochemical tests indicated that under more oxidizing conditions, nitrided materials are converted to a passive state with a significantly reduced corrosion rate. Elec-trochemical tests performed in an aerated environment confirmed the passivity of the samples in an oxidizing environment.

Develop a technology for producing high-quality hake graphite from the steelmaking waste known as kish. Approach Treat the waste kish as an ore and apply mineral processing techniques of physical beneficiation and chemical purification to produce a range of graphite products com¬petitive with the natural mineral. Background Graphite is a naturally occurring form of carbon with a unique combination of properties that make it indispensable in a very wide range of industrial and consumer applications. It has high electrical and thermal conductivity and remains stable to extremely high temperatures It has a low coefficient of friction and is nearly impervious to corrosion. The steel industry is dependent on graphite in clay-, magnesia-, and alumina-bonded refractories for crucibles, bricks, facings, and coatings. Electrical uses include graphite brushes in motors and generators, and electrodes in batteries. The transportation industry needs graphite for clutch and brake linings, and all industries depend on graphite in seals, gaskets, lubricants, and coatings. The consumer sees graphite in composite plastics and in the common pencil. As with all natural minerals, the availability of graphite is diminishing and costs are rising as quality decreases.
