Electronic detonators have been commercially available to the mining industry worldwide for over ten years. It is estimated that total cumulative global sales will have reached 25 million units by the time of the Conference in February 2004. This is below 0.2% of all detonator types sold during this period. Perhaps 20 million will have been used underground in South African gold, diamond and platinum mines. These will have been produced by South African companies, in South Africa for South African customers. Here efforts have met with greater success and in 2003 fully 5 million, or 3% of local detonators sold, could be of an electronic type. However, it is estimated that about US$7.00 (R50.00) has been expended on R & D, manufacturing facilities and marketing, for each unit so far sold. Large sums of money continue to be spent. Despite the apparent success in South Africa, is it justified? Electronic initiation systems have not produced significant technical benefits to the end-user underground nor corporate profits to the supplier. Some doubt they ever will (even from the large surface operations where the price per unit is much higher). A conclusion might be that they have failed. In 1998 Smit and Pistorius wrote a paper titled “Implications of the Dominant Design in Electronic Initiation Systems in the South African Mining Industry”. This ISEE paper seeks to summarise and review the conclusions of the earlier work. These were: that a dominant design had not yet emerged; the type of connector and the way in which detonators are connected and programmed would be a strong determinant influencing the development of a “winning” product; technical aspects rarely solely determine which becomes the dominant design (marketing, social and economic factors often have a strong influence); electronic initiation systems were an emerging technology for the underground gold mining industry in South Africa and because it was under severe cost pressure the mines would look to them to raise productivity and hence profits; finally, as a dominant design begins to emerge, one could expect a number of players to exit from the industry.

Blasting performance is influenced by rock mass properties and blast design parameters. From them, the rock is the only variable that cannot be modified, but it can be measured, so that, blast design variables can be adapted to optimize the results. A new methodology to assess rock mass quality from drill-monitoring data from both autonomous and manual rotary drilling modes is described to guide blasting in open pit operations. For that, a thorough normalization process has been developed to minimize external influences induced in the data by the rig system for autonomous mode and by the operator intervention for manual mode. Principal component analysis has been used to combine MWD information. Two rock description indexes are derived directly from Measurement While Drilling (MWD) data collected. The first index is a Structural factor that classifies the rock mass condition in three classes (massive, fractured and heavily fractured). The second index is a Strength factor that classifies the rock according to the strength properties. Both indexes have been combined to obtain an overall drilling rock factor along the hole. This has been named by the authors as the X-Rock model.

RBH Note: the following item is a little different than the usual, in that it shows how explosives were used in the past to assist in putting down holes for iron ore prospecting on the early Mesabi Range of Minnesota. The way explosives were used would not even occur to the modern explorationist, given the equipment available today. The reason for the great difficulty in putting down a hole was that the area was covered with debris from the great glaciers of the past (the same ones that carved out the Great lakes). This debris consisted of boulders, clay, sand, and any other imaginable mixture of materials.

On July 10, 1926, lightning struck at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, and caused the explosion of at least 600,000 pounds (272,000 kilograms) of ammunition, resulting in more than $600 million (2015 dollars) in damage, the destruction of 200 buildings, and 22 deaths. Fortunately, there has not been a major incident involving lightning and explosives in the US in some time, though lightning has destroyed fuel storage tanks in recent years, including in North Dakota, Texas, and Ohio. Lightning poses a significant hazard to the explosives industry. Carrying high currents and temperature, lightning can cause explosives to detonate, start fires near storage facilities, and injure or kill operators.

The US Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board is sponsoring the development of a risk-based explosives safety siting program, SAFER. The fragment and debris hazard generated at the potential explosion site (PES) is critical at an exposed site (ES) over a significant range of standoff distances. The Science Panel Impact Debris Evaluation and Review (SPIDER) test program has been planned to develop improved predictions for the hazards inside an ES by fragments and debris. Data will include the mass and velocity required for perforation of the test cross-section and the characteristics of all debris produced inside the ES.

The application of new technologies, methodologies, and the use of new products in mining operations is a practice that is becoming more common in the industry every day, added to the new challenges and restrictions found in the operation. In the city of Tierra Amarilla, the interaction between mining operations and the community presents a constant challenge given the proximity to the community and the limitations that this presents. Explosive charge mass, in conventional blasting using traditional explosives (ANFOs, packaged explosives for example) limits the explosive charge lengths (they are reduced), impacting the explosive charge productivity. To improve the productivity of explosive charge and fragmentation, the use of low-density explosives was proposed, allowing the increase of the explosive charge length, trying to maintain the vibration levels within the established limits (2mm/s), preserving the fragmentation of the rock in the required sizes. The present study shows the results obtained from the application of low-density bulk emulsion for production blasting charges using upward and downward fan drillings. During this process, 18 blasting events were carried out, of which 8 were Up-hole loading (average density of 0.75 gr/cc) and 10 with Down-Hole loading (average density of 0.95 gr/cc). In summary, a total of 110,760 tons of ore have been broken, using low density emulsion, meeting the proposed objectives such as: 33% reduction of vibrations, 12% overbreak (within the theoretical design), P80 of 11in and 4.6% in fines.

The segmentation of quarry blast smoke plumes is a crucial research area that has the potential to enhance safety, environmental monitoring, object detection, and regulatory compliance in the mining industry. Smoke plume segmentation can be used to identify the spatial extent and temporal evolution of smoke plumes generated by the blast. This information can be used to improve the understanding of blast dynamics and optimize blast designs. Furthermore, smoke plume segmentation can assist in identifying potential environmental and health hazards associated with the release of smoke and dust particles into the atmosphere during quarry blasts. However, many current smoke plume segmentation algorithms are designed for segmentation of smoke plumes from fires and are not suitable for segmentation of plumes from quarry blasts. The proposed method in this paper leverages the video frame captured before the blast as a stationary background image, which helps to reduce other confuser objects present in the image along with a selfadaptive clustering method. The color channels of the image are utilized based on the different contrast properties of the smoke, with a self-adaptive gradient compensation applied for edge detection of the smoke plume. This approach offers a novel and effective way to segment smoke in quarry blast analysis, with potential applications in the calculation of noxious gas volume and concentration within the plume. Compared to other algorithms, our method improves accuracy, decreases the false alarm rates, and reduces the overall miss rate. Overall, this paper contributes to the research on smoke plume image segmentation, particularly for quarry blast smoke plumes, which possess unique characteristics that require specialized algorithms for accurate segmentation.

Determining the transitions from run-up to optimal cut length and optimal cut length to run down, without bias, from the penetration of a linear shaped charge (LSC) is difficult. The stresses applied to the targets during explosive testing can distort the targets in such a manner that determining the true distance of cut, penetration, or fracture can be demanding. Through the course of this research, it was observed that the researchers made many of the errors involved in the collection of data. Among these errors researchers found problems in: determining and fitting the sample to a single plane from which to read measurements, determining where along the path of cut the three phases of penetration transition, and the precision of measurement based on handheld tools and the human eye. This study looks at three methods of recording the data of a series of linear shaped charge tests. The tests resulted in samples which are not ideal for measuring with common laboratory devices like measuring tapes, calipers, or rulers. The first method utilized these common laboratory devices and the difficulties the authors experienced are described in this paper. The second and third methods involve digital photography, image manipulation, and the use of AutoCAD. Methods two and three are then compared to the simple observational method and discussion is made in regards to the precision and accuracy of each method.

Hydrocarbon fuel oils are one of the main components of ammonium nitrate-based explosives, including ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate-Fuel Oil) and emulsions. While a wide variety of fuels can, and have, been used in the manufacture of ANFO and emulsion products, No. 2 diesel, particularly dyed, off-road diesel, is widely used due to its ready availability and use in fueling mining equipment. However, a number of alternatives to standard diesel have been introduced over recent years, namely, biofuels, ‘high-performance’ diesels, and renewable diesels. The pressure to adopt these alternative fuels come from a variety of sources, such as initiatives to reduce carbon footprints, increased lifetime of equipment, and cost-advantages from tax credits. While these factors may provide a very real benefit to the mine site, a consideration that is often missed is how the use of these fuels can impact the formulation and characteristics of the ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Herein will be presented a discussion of these alternative fuels from a chemical perspective as well as the results of several studies focused on how the inclusion of various alternative diesels influences the production and performance of ammonium nitrate explosives. ANFO and emulsion were manufactured using representative fuel sources and studying in terms of the manufacturing parameters, shelf-life, interaction with other chemicals using in mining explosives. Detonation data was then collected for these products and compared to the behavior of products made with standard diesel fuels.

This paper describes the controlled blasting techniques required to mine a rock tunnel section of a main interceptor located in the Boston Metropolitan area. The 3m (10 ft) x 2.8m (9.25 ft) horseshoe shaped tunnel was driven 490m (1600 ft) by conventional drill and blast methods. The geology varied round by round and consisted of five highly faulted and jointed igneous rock types. The tunnel intersected numerous slickenslides and open mud seams which hampered both drilling and loading operations. Smooth blasting wee critical in order to keep overbreak tc a minimum in this extremely hard but blocky ground.

A large overburden blast was carried out at Douglas Colliery, Middelburg Mine Services, close to a national road in South Africa. The road is a busy route between Witbank and Bethal and damage to the road could not be risked. The section of road next to the blast was particularly prone to damage, because it had been mined out on its eastern flank, and the large blast was to take place on its western flank. There were thus three potential damage risks: 1. Fly rock damage to the road surface 2. Vibration damage to the road substrate 3. Damage caused by bulk displacement of the block supporting the road into the void on the mined out side. This paper presents the design and blasting methods used to control the blast and avoid these three risks. Electronic delay detonators were used in multi-decked holes. Signature data were used to determine the blast timing to make sure that delays were used that would provide destructive interference. The timing direction and sequence was decided using wave interference patterns to direct repeated shocks away from the road. The precise detonators and the odelling capability allowed effective control of the blast vibration result. Each hole was charged with two explosive decks separated by a deck of aggregate to limit the charge mass fired per delay and thus limit the reaction forces acting towards the unsupported road. The vibration and blast results are presented in the paper, together with the design that was applied. Details are provided on how the blast was charged and primed. We conducted the Vermont Damage Experiment in central Vermont during July 2008. Five single-hole explosions with yields ranging from 60.8 kg (134 lbs) to 122.5 kg (270 lbs) were detonated in homogeneous, low fracture density granite. The goal of the experiment was to quantify the different levels of rock damage around the source and then relate the seismic wave generation to the degree and distribution of damage and fragmentation. In addition, explosives with different velocities of detonation (VOD), including black powder (0.53 km/sec; 1737 ft/sec), heavy ANFO (4.8 km/sec; 15734 ft/sec), and COMP B (8.1 km/sec; 26574 ft/sec) were detonated to relate the VOD to seismic wave generation and extent of damage zones in the source region. Over 120 seismic stations were deployed to record the explosions at distances between 5 m and 30 km (15 ft to 19 miles).

Sublevel caving (SLC) is a mass mining method based upon the utilization of gravity flow of blasted ore and caved waste rock. Production blasting has significant impact on the efficiency and productivity of SLC output, affecting material fragmentation, flow and recovery. Misfires could occur during blasting in SLC, which results in the loss of explosives and poor fragmentation. Usually, the blastholes are top-initiated with redundant lower primers set at + 25 ms as a precaution. If the top primers fail, the lower primers may initiate the explosive, which will induce out-of-sequence delays that can influence fragmentation and gravity flow. This work investigated the impact of misfires and out-ofsequence delays on fragmentation and gravity flow through numerical simulations using a coupled finite element and discrete element method. Different scenarios of misfires and out-of-sequence delays were studied, and the fragment size distribution was obtained to evaluate the blasting performance. The material flow behaviour was investigated to assess the gravity flow process. The results indicated that misfires significantly affect the fragmentation and the gravity flow process while the effects of out-of-sequence delays are not so significant for the investigated cases

This paper presents some of the results obtained during the research work about the use of technologies and digital transformation in the process of rock drilling in open pit mines. The use of automation presents itself as a disruptive factor and a driver of improvements that provide sustainability in rock drilling. Seven main operational parameters were utilized to combine measurement while the drilling (MWD) with other information generated by the equipment during hole drilling, in six different lithologies in an iron mine, located in the central region of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Adjustments and corrections were made to the data collected in order to minimize external influences other than the rock itself, to ensure the effectiveness of the analyses. Finally, we sought to compare the performance of the drilling process in manual and automatic operation modes. Thus, making it possible to show the efficiency and impact on the sustainability of rock drilling operations in open pit mines.

This paper provides a preliminary description of the properties of the output pressure (shock) wave of an end initiated, cylindrical charge of low height to diameter ratio in saturated sand. The properties of primary interest are the pressure wave velocity, peak pressure and rate of rise of peak pressure to within 1.4 charge diameters from the output end of the charge. The behavior of these properties is seen to be quite different from their behavior at more customary ranges in water.

The presence of natural underground cavities is normally a characteristic of iron ore deposits, specifically in tropical deposits. Brazil and the United States are the only countries that have a legislation to protect these structures, but in Brazil this legislation is very specific for the existing cavities in the federal territory. These cavities are classified by their level of relevance as high, medium, and low. From this perspective, its preservation becomes mandatory, especially, for those of high relevance in order to protect the species (flora and fauna) that live in them. When these structures are within the production phases, it becomes a challenge to exploit these reserves with the use of commercial explosives, since these structures condition and may restrict the use and amount of explosive charge. This paper presents the methodology of controlled blasting associated with predictability via realistic simulation in production polygons, applied in a Brazilian iron ore mine where there is a presence of high relevance natural cavities with restrictions in relation to the limits of Peak Particle Velocity (PPV), which is product of detonation.
