The Blasting In the summer of 1999, a Southern California drilling and blasting company conducted blasting as part of the grading operations at the Highlands Ranch development in San Diego, California. Highlands Ranch was a new single family residential project located near older residential properties in the area. Blasting was necessary to remove indigenous meta-volcanic rock associated with the local geology.

The paper is drawn from a project intended to explore a technique of prediction, control and optimization of fracture in coal induced by blasting. It evaluates the fines generated in coal submitted to dynamic loading stresses in an impact stamp mortar. The aim is to analyze a complex phenomenon of coal response to blast-generated stresses from a series of discrete simulations of shock and gas actions in controllable processes.

Various types of waves originate from a blast source to propagate through rock/soil media away from the blast. Input vibration to a structure depends on the soil-structure interaction which varies with the dynamic properties at the intersection as well as the stress and strain levels developed from the vibration of the structure-ground system. Hence it is important to study such effects on the response of a structure due to blast loads and this knowledge can be used in the design and control of blasts that are carried out close to buildings, highways and other structures.

Public perception is a significant challenge facing the explosives industry. The public often perceives that its needs and interests are in direct competition with those of blasting companies’, leading to conflict between corporations and the community. This misunderstanding lends to unnecessary political and regulatory hardship, and ultimately, social discontent. Although individual corporations implement strategies to address conflict, many of these techniques are insufficient. Consequently, stakeholders resort to expensive litigation. If blasting companies could reduce or eliminate the volume of judicial disputes, valuable resources could be re-directed to more productive activities.

As the title "Cast Blasting Around Town" implies, this paper details the starting of a cast blasting program in and around the town of Colstrip, Montana. As strip ratios have increased, the need to adapt and find solutions to provide coal at a reasonable cost to the captive power plants has risen. Colstrip, Montana has a long history of coal mining which dates back to the early 1920's when Foley Brothers began supplying coal strictly for powering locomotive engines. Early mining days starting in the 1920's and the progression up through the 1970's when mine mouth power plants were built will be discussed. To accomplish the desired results, early mining techniques included steam and electric powered equipment as well as a lot of actual horse power.

In the ensuing years nitroglycerin-based dynamites will continually be replaced by water-based explosives. Until recently, the choice of a high explosive water-based product was limited to some type of water gel. Now, there is another choice. New emulsions are available having several degrees of sensitivity over a wide range of diameters. This paper discusses the properties of these new emulsions, e.g., physical and thermochemical; the relationship between diameter and explosive properties; and the effects of aluminum on total energy. There is also discussion of some of the unique properties of emulsions, their advantages, and how they differ from water gels.

Blasting techniques, which have been used for a long time in Turkey, are powerful and economical tool in producing raw material in mining, quarrying, construction .etc. industries. The development of the society within the world has resulted in a substantial increase in the scale of such industrial projects. However, the expansion of such activity has been matched by an increased public awareness of environmental issues, particularly when it occurs in relatively close proximity to residential areas. One of the most troublesome issues facing the mining, quarrying and construction industries when carrying out their blasting activities is that of ground vibration. Because, blasting induced ground vibration can reach to very far distances from the source and has the potential for damage to concern to the inhabitants of property.

The impact sensitivity of hot emulsion matrices was examined to investigate the safety assessment in the emulsifying equipment which forms the emulsion matrix in a water-in-oil type emulsion explosive. The sensitivity could not be evaluated by the small fallhammer test device commonly used in Japan. Therefore, a large fallhammer test device was used. It was confirmed that an explosion, a decomposition, or a no-reaction took place according to the degree of the impact. When a decomposition took place in the hot emulsion matrix, the behavior of it was investigated further by a DDT test. It was found that a decomposition, or a no-reaction occurred according to the degree of confinement.

On August 3, 1977 the 95th Congress passed Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. This Act created the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM), which was given the responsibility of formulating regulations to implement the Act. This paper explains the rationale behind the specific provisions of the final blasting regulations, which were published in volume 44, No. 50 of the Federal Register, dated March 13, 1979. The major items covered by the regulations include preblasting surveys, blasting schedules, protection of the public, ground vibration limits, the scaled distance equation, airblast limits, blasting procedures, and record keeping. The regulations are designed to protect the safety and well-being of the public and to protect buildings and structures such as wells, pipelines, and storage facilities from damage.

The time domain during which an explosive detonates and causes rock to fragment and displace is on the order of tens of milliseconds. Because of this, the dynamic processes that occur during this time frame often become a source of confusion when trying to analyze the performance of explosive products in decked blast designs. As an illustration, the authors have experimentally examined explosives malfunction in decked blasts through state-of-the-art measurement techniques. The interaction of explosive products and blast geometry was examined in detail using the analysis of a series of decked blastholes. Explosive and initiator malfunction in decked blasts is often considered to be entirely the result of insufficient inert decking material, however, it is shown that rock properties and dynamic burden conditions may have a significant impact on decking performance. The successful application of deck-blasting technique for control of ground vibration amplitude relies on an understanding of the true dynamic performance of the blasthole.

This paper discusses recent changes to the emulsion blend blasting agent used at the Drummond Pribbenow Mine in Colombia, one of the world’s largest open pit coal mines, and the resulting improvements in rock breakage and excavator productivity. Based on field evaluations, the use of High Density Ammonium Nitrate (HDAN) can be effectively implemented in an emulsion blend blasting agent, yielding excellent results in terms of energy release, shelf life and velocity of detonation (VOD). Field evaluations showed that formulations using HDAN exceed the performance of the actual 50%/50% emulsion/ANFO blend using Porous Prill Ammonium Nitrate (PPAN). PPAN is conventionally used for emulsion blend manufacturing, with physical characteristics to facilitate sensitivity during the detonation process.

The Department of Mining and Mineral Engineering at the University of Leeds has a long history of research into the environmental impacts of blasting from quarries and opencast mines. This paper gives an outline of a detailed case study into the structural damaged induced in a rock walled tunnel with a brick lined crown due to close proximity quarry blasting. The test site Taffs Well Quarry is located in South Wales in The United Kingdom and has a disused railway tunnel situated within the south eastern comer of the quarry site. Quarry development plans included the working of this area and therefore the deliberate destruction of the central section of the tunnel.

Computer simulation of the physics involved in conventional rock blasting can be split into two phases; transient stress wave propagation and rock motion. Because the two phases involve totally different mechanisms and time scales, they must be numerically modeled with two different computer programs. The first phase is usually modeled with a finite element or finite difference code which treats the rock as a continuum and simulates the transient stress wave and subsequent fragmentation of the rock. The second phase is usually modeled with a distinct element technique where the rock mass after fragmentation is no longer treated as a continuum but as a finite number of distinct particles that interact with each other through collision mechanics.

Recently an experiment was completed at the Golden Sunlight Mine, a property owned by Placer Dome Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia, to measure the Body Waves entering their highwall created by blasting. The purpose of the study was to assess the damaging effects of blasting on the highwall, in order to further slope stability. Stress and Strain experienced in the earth that is created as a result of blasting can be determined by knowing several important pieces of information. These include the compressional and shear wave particle velocities initiated by blasting, the Body Wave travel velocities in both the shear and longitudinal direction, and the densities of the rock in question. A series of equations based on wave theory can then be used to determine the stress and strain affecting the highwalls. The Blasting Engineer can then use this information to design blasts that create peak particle velocities less than levels that maintain the integrity of the highwalls. This paper first discusses the experiment used to measure the Body Wave velocities. It then traces through the subsequent calculations necessary to generate the information needed by the Blasting Engineers, the Mining Engineers, the Geological Engineers, and the Geophysicists to design blasts and develop open pit plans to alleviate unstable highwall conditions.

This paper evaluates the actual energy delivered by the explosives used in the fragmentation of rock during blasting vs. the available theoretical explosive energy. The evaluation of the fragmentation energy of the blast is first done. Fragmentation by blasting can be seen as a process in which creation of new surfaces within the rock mass is made by generation of new cracks or extension of pre-existing ones. From this idea, the fragmentation blast efficiency can be assessed as the fraction of the available explosive energy used for creation of new surfaces. The evaluation of new cracks area created by the blast is based on the SIMBLOC methodology and the corresponding fragmentation energy is then obtained by the Griffith theory. Secondly, the amount of energy delivered down to a certain pressure or volume along the detonation product expansion process, given by the useful work, is calculated. This is done by first determining the CJ state of the reacted explosive and subsequently performing an adiabatic expansion calculation of the detonation products from that state. W-Detcom code has been used for the calculations using the BKW equation of state with the Sandia parameter set. The fragmentation energy and the useful work are calculated for blasts performed in two mines in Spain. Multiple regression is applied to the results in order to give an assessment of the better description of the explosive energy .

The critical nature of detonator function in blast design and its effects upon performance and safety of a blasting operation are well documented. Numerous laboratory and field studies have shown dynamic shock waves, generated by the detonating explosives in a shot, to be detrimental to the performance of the explosive columns in the adjacent boreholes. Laboratory tests conducted in Japan have explored the possible effects of dynamic precompression upon cartridges of emulsion explosives, which had been sensitized with different hotspot void producing methods. These tests uncovered significant differences in the magnitude of the dynamic shock wave pressures measured inside the different emulsion explosive cartridges, and demonstrated these pressure differences by crushing detonator shells inserted inside the emulsion cartridge. Basically, the results of these tests clearly showed the magnitude of the compressive force applied to the detonator inside the primed explosive cartridge to be a function of the mechanism that had been used to sensitize the emulsion (i.e., glass microspheres, plastic spheres, chemical gassing). The current study was designed to further explore the actual detonator failure mechanism in these dynamic precompression tests using live detonators inside the emulsion cartridge as opposed to empty detonator shells. The testing involved inserting commercial delay detonators inside emulsion charges, which had been sensitized with common hotspot void producing agents, and subjecting the primed explosive cartridge to the dynamic pressure wave generated by an underwater donor explosive charge. The effects of variations in the emulsion’s sensitization method upon the damage inflicted to the detonator were studied. Depending upon the degree of detonator damage, detonator crushing can lead to varying degrees of detonator malfunctions, ranging from sympathetic initiation of the detonator, to a reduction in delay time accuracy, to reduced detonator output, to complete detonator failure. Each of these malfunctions can have serious detrimental effects upon the performance and safety of a blasting operation.

The evaluation of vibrations induced to build structures is one of the main concerns when dealing with blast works. EDP, the main Portuguese producer of electricity is presently incrementing energy production in some old hydropower dams by installing new production plants. The need for not disrupting production during the upgrading works causes some concerns related with vibrations induced to the production engines. Vibration estimation was performed in two of these dams, constructed in a granite environment, by performing controlled blasts. For each dam site, some vibration transmissivity laws were developed with the fitting process.

On August 5th, 1998, a tractor-trailer carrying approximately 18,000 kg of blasting explosives, struck a rock face on the side of the road near the town of Walden, Ontario. Eye-witness accounts of the incident state that there was an intense fire for approximately 30 minutes before the detonation. The detonation caused severe damage to the tractor-trailer, shifted the pavement and caused blast damage to the rock face. A rock fragment was recovered almost 2.5 km from ground zero and a 70 kg piece of an axle assembly was recovered over 1 km from the site. Windows were cracked at distances of almost 3 km.
