Bentonite is an excellent sealant mineral material because of its desirable swelling and self-healing characteristics, low permeability, sorptive qualities, and longevity in nature. A new type of water-swelling building sealant made from bentonite was studied in this paper. The building sealant is prepared by Na-base bentonite, vaseline and paraffin wax under different mass fraction of bentonite (which is 60%,65%,70% respectively). Under unrestricted state, some properties of samples were investigated. The volume expansion ratio at 24 h is 211%, 222%, 256% , and permeability coefficient is 2.86×10-8 cm/s, 4.15×10-8 cm/s and 4.78×10-8 cm/s respectively; low temperature flexibility of the sample (bentonite quality is 65%, 70% respectively) is good, and it does not flow heated for 2 h under 80?. The results of XRD and SEM indicate that bentonite is coated preferably by vaseline, and the spacing of layers of bentonite do not changed. The sample can keep full water swelling ability, and has good molding process. The test results prove that the properties of samples may reach the standard of building sealant.

A close association of fine gold with pyrite and arsenopyrite is observed at many gold ore deposits. Gold forms and gold distribution in sulfides of different deposits were studied. A comprehensive method including optical spectrum analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, high-temperature X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis was used for the de-tailed investigation of the defectiveness of the structure of pyrites from different deposits. It was shown that gold content in pyrites varied from 1.5 g/t to 100 g/t compared with 30 g/t to 230 g/t in arsenopyrites. The nature and arrangement of inner inclusions of foreign minerals in pyrites as well as occurrence of fractures and macro- and microdefects were examined. Iron, sulfur and arsenic contents in all pyrite samples were determined. Chemical composition of the detected inclusions was defined. Parameters of submicroscopic structure of pyrite were estimated using X-ray Fourier line shape analysis. Estimation of real structure characteristics with calculation of submicroscopic D-blocks and root-mean-square lattice deformation 2()evalues was performed. Defectiveness of the pyrite structure can be defined by the following parameters: K?1 and K?2 reflection resolution and its intensity within high Bragg angles; S content to Fe content ratio; the arsenic content and the local variation in its concentration within the pyrite grain; the size of submicroscopic blocks and the crystal lattice disturbance value. The performed analysis showed some relationships between these parameters and refractoriness of the pyrite concentrates. It was observed that at S/Fe ratio close to or higher than stoichiometry and at a low arsenic content (less than one per cent) pyrite concentrates were not refractory. The analysis results showed that concentrates of the Beryozovskaya gold plant (0.02~0.07 As%) and concentrates of the Kommunarovskaya gold plant (less than 0.05 As%) as well as some pyrites from the Sukhoi Log gold deposit had the same characteristics. It was found that average arsenic content did not excess 0.2 per cent. Arsenic distribution within the grain of all these pyrites was uniform. At S/Fe ratio lower than or close to stoichiometry and at high arsenic content (more than one per cent) and significant variation in its distribution within a pyrite grain the pyrite concentrates are refractory. Such pyrites are typical for the Sukhoi Log, the Bakyrchik and the Mardzhanbulak gold deposits. Direct correlation between arsenic and gold contents, in particular, in fine grains of pyrite was observed by many researches. This correlation was explained by impregnation of arsenopyrite which normally contains more gold than arsenic pyrites. The analyses results showed that no arsenopyrite impregnation was found: arsenic distribution within the grain was uniform but its concentration varied greatly. Such pyrite concentrates are more refractory. This paper presents the results of analyses of sulfides to determine the amenability of the associated gold recovery by hydro- and pyrometallurgy.

Since Schönert, 1980 a multiplicity of scientists have dedicated themselves intensively to the scientific investigation of wet grinding in agitated media mills. The achieved research results led to a clearly improved understanding of the comminution mechanism in wet operated agitated media mills and in consequence also to clearly more efficient machines. In contrast to this the standard of knowledge on dry grinding in agitated media mills is still very small. The practical experience from numerous plants shows however that the transferability of knowledge from wet grinding to the dry grinding regarding transport phenomena and comminution behaviour, influence of the operating parameters and also wear is very limited. In the industrial application above all the continuous mode of operation is preferred. The main problem which has to be solved in agitated media mills is minor the comminution itself, than rather the question of the trouble free material supply and material extraction as well as the cooling of the mill. The agitated media mill MaxxMill® offers an innovative concept to overcome the feeding and extraction problem with its rotating grinding chamber, the eccentrically mounted agitators as well as the eccentric flow deflector with integrated material supply. Because of the pneumatic extraction of the ground materi-al cooling of the milling chamber is not necessary. On a MaxxMill ® laboratory mill with a 5 litre grinding chamber volume extensive parameter studies were carried out to study the influence of operating parameters on the continuous dry grinding of quartz sand. The test were performed in a continuous single pass operation without classification of the final product. Apart from the influence of the throughput rate on fineness above all the influence of the agitator and grinding chamber speed as well as the grinding media size was examined.

"The adsorption of xanthate takes place at a different potential on each major sulfide mineral, hence, as it was demonstrated in the past, each mineral component can be selectively separated from ore under well controlled potential conditions. In real flotation this concept never works out for two reasons: the potential of single mineral particle results from complex surface reactions controlled by solution chemistry, and there is a galvanic interaction between different mineral particles present in the flotation pulp.In this study the formation of amyl xanthate hydrophobic products on pyrite, galena and chalcopyrite has been spectroscopically investigated in the presence of combinations of these minerals. The type of the adsorbed species and their amount were determined directly on mineral surfaces by infrared external reflection technique. Galvanic contact between grains of two different minerals has tremendous consequence on the adsorption of collector on both minerals. The detected changes are dramatic, from no adsorption to a coverage formation of a few monolayers. The results obtained indicate clearly that the observations and conclusions about the collector adsorption, hence also the surface hydrophobization, made for a single mineral system does not describe the real situation in a multi-component mineral system such as flotation pulp."

India has sizeable number of small deposits of rare metal bearing minerals namely columbite-tantalite, pyrochlore, beryl, lepidolite, spodumene and rare-earth element bearing minerals monazite and xenotime in different parts of India. Pegmatites, alkali granites, syenites, and the derived gravel and soils are the main source for rare metal and rare earth (RMRE) minerals. The RMRE minerals are classified as prescribed substances under Atomic Energy act of 1962 keeping in view the uses in the nuclear industry. Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is the sole agency responsible for exploration and exploitation of RMRE minerals in India since 1962. The latest technological advancements and applications in the field of space, electronics, communication and nuclear industry using these metals and their products have necessitated to augment the production and resources of RMRE minerals. These minerals play a significant role in the technological and economic development of the country. The light rare earth element bearing mineral monazite is abundant in beach sands and is being commercially exploited by Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL). Columbite-tantalite, the chief source for niobium and tantalum (Nb-Ta) metals present in the pegmatitic gravel are recovered by small mobile beneficiation plants. The cut and fill method of mining adapted is eco-friendly. The processing flow-sheet consists of wet sizing at ½ in and 1mm followed by gravity concentration of sized products utilizing the methods of jigging and wet tabling. The sizing equipment include revolving and vibratory screens and the gravity concentration equipments used are fixed sieve jigs and movable screen jigs for final upgradation. The gravity concentrates are further upgraded by magnetic separation to remove magnetite and ilmenite. The mine areas are reclaimed by filling with coarse size tailings and new plantations. These mobile pilot plants were earlier operated in Bihar mica belt, Jharkhand, pegmatitic areas of Karnataka and Nellore mica belt of Andhra Pradesh and are currently being operated in Bastar-Malkangiri pegmatite belt of Chhattisgarh and pegmatites of Jharsuguda district of Orissa. Beryl, lepidolite, spodumene and cassiterite minerals are the by-products from the pegmatite ores. Fergusonite, samarskite and microlite are the other niobium and tantalum bearing minerals which are also found in pegmatites. Xenotime, the chief mineral of yttirium generally occurs in granites and pegmatites. The rare earth minerals monazite and xenotime get concentrated in the placer sands of rivers and beaches. The occurrence of xenotime in the sands of Siri River and Deo River in Chhotanagpur granitic terrain in parts of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand are an example. These sands containing 1-2.5% heavy minerals were processed by a mobile plant consisting of sizing equipments like trommel and vibratory screen followed by separation of heavy minerals from -1mm sands with the help of gravity concentration equipments like spirals/shaking tables/sluices. Xenotime and monazite from the pre-concentrate are further separated by magnetic and electro-static methods. The present paper illustrates the pilot plant set up for the recovery of rare metal as well as rare earth minerals. "The entrainment of sericite, especially in the presence of hydrophobic microcrystalline graphite, leads to the poor flotation selectivity of microcrystalline graphite ore. In this paper, it was attempted to reduce entrainment of sericite, selective flocculation of microcrystalline graphite using polyethylene oxide (PEO) was studied. For the sake of flocculate microcrystalline graphiteselectively, flocculation tests of microcrystalline graphite and sericite single mineral were conducted.To investigate the effect of selectiveflocculation of graphite on entrainment of sericite in microcrystalline graphite flotation, batch flotation tests of graphite single mineral and artificial mixtures were conducted; theflocculationselectivity of PEO of different molecular weight (M.W.) was alsocompared inartificial mixture flotation. Inthe end, the structure of flocs in different particle size was studied by sieve analysis and microscopic observation. The resultsindicated that PEO of molecular weightone million andtwo million could selectivelyflocculate the microcrystalline graphite and reduce the entrainment of sericite at a lower dosage; further increasingof the dosage of PEO(M.W. ?two million) led to hetero-flocculation between graphite and sericiteandmadethe ash content of concentrate increase again."

Mining of low grade deposits along with the necessity to design and operate flotation plants with high throughput presents unique metallurgical and environmental challenges that need to be addressed to reduce project risks, improve project economics and to sustain the profitability of operations over the life of a mine. Some of the key challenges include poor recovery of valuables and concentrate quality issues due to complex mineralogy, the need to use poor quality water such as brackish or sea water, reduce environmental impact from the process, integrate flotation with hydrometallurgy to maximize precious metals recovery, escalation of capital and operating costs, use of unproven technology and constant use of larger equipment, high ore variability, worldwide constraints on resource availability and an ever increasing need for reliable metallurgical input to financial models to evaluate economic viability of projects. The need to develop effective solutions to these problems in a short time frame is becoming a key to the success of any new project and for sustaining the profitability of a mining operation. An integrated multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving is crucial with the need for a more lateral thinking along with strategic partnerships and collaboration involving the right players. To look into the ionic release laws of the sulphide tailings in some copper mine, the effects of the soaking period, temperature, oscillating speed, and pH of the solution on the heavy metals ionic re-lease were investigated through static soaking leaching experiments. The results show that Cu2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Cr3+ are of different leaching behaviors with soaking period. The ionic concentration in soaking solution for four ions has a great gap. Zn2+ is more easily released out of sulfide tailings than Cu2+, Pb2+, Cr3+ , and the ion release concentrations are not proportion to their contents in the tailings. The time for each ion to reach its maximum concentration are different. The minimum concentration do not occur at the first day. Each ion concentration shows different fluctuation characteristic during soaking process. Solution pH, oscillating speed, and temperature affect the releases of Cu2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Cr3+ out of the tailings to different extent. The effect of pH value on ion re-lease for the four ions ranks as Zn2+>Cu2+>Pb2+>Cr3+, the oscillating speed ranks as Pb2+>Zn2+>Cu2+>Cr3+, and the temperature ranks as Cr3+>Pb2+>Zn2+>Cu2+.

"This paper examines the grinding and wear processes in drum mills. A summary of the industry’s long-term experience with the proposed linings is presented. A method is proposed for assessing the efficiency of the grinding energy distribution between the successive stages. A case study is presented of grinding energy redistribution at Talnakh Concentrator by replacing spiral classifiers with a drum-type hydraulic screen. The problems of the kinetics of grinding processes in ball mills and semi-autogenous (SAG) mills are examined. It is demonstrated that in ball mills the feed particles are disintegrated by triaxial compression in the mill zones where discrete slippage of the charge occurs at major force interactions between the layers. Mechanism underlying increases in the specific energy consumption in grinding circuits based on SAG mills is shown.The problem of improving the throughput and reducing the specific energy consumption in mineral feed grinding is highly relevant because of the significant energy intensity. Up to 80% of the consumed energy is used to disintegrate ore fed into the drum mill. At all development stages of the drum mill grinding theory, the researchers have paid a great deal of attention to studying the patterns of the charge motion and the kinetics of the feed particles disintegration processes. In [1], it was shown that, due to the slippage between the charge layers being lifted, drum mills at concentrator plants operate in a mixed cascade and waterfall mode. A feature of the mixed mode is the toe zone, where the charge contacts the lining and the transition to a circular path takes place. Studies of the charge motion in the toe zone made it possible to develop a method for designing cross-sectional profiles of lining plates [2] for ball mill drums. The method is based on the principle of interaction between the balls and the lining, where the non-working rear surfaces follow the relative motion path of the balls before impacting the lining, while the working surfaces are orthogonal to the rear ones. Lining with the proposed profile provides contact with the charge and slippage-free transition to a circular path. This ensures an longer service life of the lining, a reduction in specific energy consumption, and an increase in the mill’s feed rate. The proposed method is applicable when designing lining plates of various materials. Steel liners with the proposed profile have been successfully operated [3] for more than 40 years at a number of projects in the industry."

The fourth iron ore production plant at Golgohar mining and industrial company consists a ball mill and wet medium intensity magnetic separators (3500 Guss). The ball mill product applies directly into MIMS and the MIMS concentrate directly transfers to the low intensity magnet separators (LIMS). The thickener is used for dewatering of MIMS and LIMS tailings. By sampling from streams of ball mill and separators, it was defined that the grade and iron recovery were 60% and 80% respectively while they would be 66% and 90% respectively based on the designing documentation. The average of P80 in the ball mill was 342 micron in a month that is coarser than optimized value. This problem was related to unsuitable operation of grinding. For optimization of grinding efficiency, the amount of charge volume was investigated as a variable. The measurements illustrated 32% charge volume. For increasing grinding efficiency, the charge volume was increased 1% and 1.6% in two stages. The results showed ball mill power draw average reached from 3650 kw to 4120 kw and the average P80 reached to 329 micron. All of parameters calculated about 35 day before and after change. Average of Ball mill feed iron ore grade before and after change was 49.24% and 50.32% respectively. This change caused an increase in efficiency of MIMS, where the enrichment ratio and concentrate grade increased 2% and 1.9% respectively. For increasing the iron grade of the MIMS concentrate; the orifice of the tail flow exit pipe changed from 4 inch to 6 inch and the concentrate grade increased 2%.

A citric acid leaching test after heavy medium separation process was performed to remove the heavy metal contaminat such as Pb, Cu, and Zn from contaminated soil. The lead component was removed from soil by heavy medium separation whereas zinc component shows 0 % - 37.9 % removal ratio with particle size. The citric acid leaching was conducted to remove the remained zinc component. The removal ratio of Zn reached to more than 95 % under the conditions; 10 % in pulp density, 200 rpm in agitation speed, 50 °C, 2 mol/L in citric acid concentration at 2 hrs in leaching time. These results suggest that the heavy medium separation method followed by citric acid leaching is effective for treatment of soil contaminated with various chemical forms of heavy metal. Liberation of valuable minerals from low-grade ores is an important challenge faced by the minerals industry. It is necessary to grind the ore to extremely fine size in order to liberate the mineral from such ores. As it is generally difficult to produce ultra-fine particles of diameter less than 1-10 mm using traditional grinding equipment such as the ball mill and the rod mill, several new types of grinding equipment are being explored to produce ultra-fine particles. The planetary ball mill is promising in that it makes grinding to submicron sizes possible by imparting high energy to the ground powder. It consists of four pots mounted on a disc. The pots and the disc rotate in opposite directions. The high-speed rotation of the pots and the disc makes the grinding media move at high centrifugal velocities leading to high impact energy and thus improving the grinding performance. The planetary mill is currently being explored for its capability to produce ultra-fine particles on a large scale. In this context, there is a need to understand the dynamics of the ultra-fine grinding process within the planetary ball mill. Here, we address this need by studying the movement of media inside the pots and the grinding kinetics, employing both experimental and modeling techniques. The experiments were conducted on a laboratory scale planetary ball mill. The particle size distribution of the powder was monitored to allow an estimate of the grinding kinetics to be made while video images of the media profiles inside the pots were taken to allow quantification of the media movement as a function of process variables such as the media size, percent loading, etc. The population balance modeling (PBM) framework was used to simulate the kinetics of grinding while the discrete element modeling (DEM) approach was utilized to simulate the media motion. The parameters in the population balance model, namely, the specific breakage rate and the breakage distribution function were determined by fitting the batch grinding equation to the experimental data. The predicted powder size distributions were found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The experimental results have shown that the mean size of product powder decreases as the size of the grinding media decreases. "The grade of copper ore and concentrate is recently decreasing and it will continues decrease further in the future. The effective liberation treatment for low grade copper ore and the removal of arsenic from copper concentrate is becoming even more important. In this work, the magnetic separation of copper concentrate by heat treatment and the flotation of low grade copper ore by microwave irradiation was studied. The heat treatment of copper minerals in the air atmosphere, the magnetization of most copper minerals increases and especially the magnetization of chalcopyrite shows the largest magnetization, after being heated at 500 oC. The wet HGMS of copper concentrate has been studied and the results have then been compared with the ones when calcined concentrate was used instead. The microwave treatment before ball milling increased the degree of liberation up to 100%, especially when compared with the case when only ball mill was applied to the as-received ore. The flotation of ground copper ore after microwave irradiation showed that the grade copper minerals such as chalcosite and bornite in froth part is much larger than that of tailing part.INTRODUCTION The copper has been used many kind of technological fields and will be more important for the future technology. The global copper production from mine is predicted as shown in Figure 1 (Northey, S. 2014). The copper production peak will be appeared in 2030 and the demand peaks in 2040. In the future the recycling of stocked copper and copper alloy will be necessary to satisfy the demand (Yoshimura, A. 2018). Changes in the grade of copper in copper concentrate, exported from several countries are shown in Figure 2. The copper grade in copper concentrate after mineral processing is gradually decreases every year and it is less than 30% nowadays. On the other hand, the copper ore grade change and prediction are shown in Figure 3. The grade of copper ore is also decreasing to less than 1% in 2010 (Northey, S. 2014). In the future the copper grade gradually decreases, reaching to less than 0.5% in 2080 and the energy to produce the copper metal will increase. The effective liberation treatment for low grade copper ore and the removal of arsenic from copper minerals become more important, nowadays. The microwave irradiation of copper ore for the liberation, energy etc. has been reported by several researchers (for example, Batchelor, A.R. 2017). The magnetization change of copper ore by heating has been reported to remove the arsenic (Sawada, M 2015). In this report, the magnetic separation of copper concentrate by heat treatment and the flotation of copper concentrate by microwave irradiation are discussed after the characteristics of secondary copper minerals are investigated by these treatments."

Flinders Power, formerly NRG Flinders, is considering the possible use of low rank coal from Lake Phillipson, South Australia (SA) in its power stations at Port Augusta, SA. Typically, this coal contains about 35% moisture and 10% ash. Unfortunately, it also contains high levels of sodium (1% Na) and chloride (0.95% Cl) with a Na2O level in ash of 18.9%. Such levels cause serious problems during coal combustion, making the use of as-mined coal impractical for power generation. This paper describes the development of an aqueous leaching technique to remove 90% of the sodium and chloride and to yield a product with a Na2 O level in ash of less than 3%. Small-scale agitation leaching tests with good quality tap water at ambient temperatures showed that the coal needed to be crushed to minus 5.6 mm to obtain maximum removal of water-soluble sodium and chloride in 30 min. Leaching kinetics, but not the ultimate removal of salt, were enhanced by the use of higher temperatures (up to 150°C), but this was deemed uneconomic. Varying the pulp density between 20% and 50% had little effect on extractions and there was no benefit in multiple stage water washing. The best results by water leaching were 69%~74% extraction for sodium and 95%~97% for chloride, meaning that the sodium removal was well below the target level. From SEM examinations of the leached product it was concluded that the remaining sodium was organically bound to the carbon atoms in the coal. Further tests using aqueous solutions containing cation exchange additives such as calcium chloride (CaCl2) or ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) or sulphuric acid (H2SO4) showed that significantly enhanced sodium extractions were possible and target specifications were met. Two options, namely a single-stage and a two-stage leach, were then investigated. In a single-stage leach with additive, minus 5.6 mm coal was leached at 33%~50% solids for 30 min at ambient temperature and then filtered and washed with fresh water. This gave a sodium removal level of about 81% and a Na2O level in ash of about 5%. These levels do not quite meet tar-get specifications. In a two-stage leach, the coal was first leached with water alone without an additive as in the single stage leach, and the washed residue re-leached under similar conditions for about 5 min with an additive (CaCl2), and then filtered and washed. This gave a cumulative sodium removal of 96% and a Na2O level in ash of 1.4%~2.4%. These levels are well within target specifications.

"The article highlights the new procedure of choosing special methods of disintegration for very complicated rare ores. Especially, there is a complex approach to criteria of comparing different types of crashing machines. Criteria are as follows: degree of crashing, degree of grinding, degree of slime creation and the new creations criteria for selection. The procedure is tested on tantalium and zelestinium ore. A new methods was shown the preference impact crashing machine MD-7 for zelestinium ore. In product of crashing 0,050 mm size are 9.4 %, 0,005 mm size – 2.5 %.This is gut result, and show the best indexes of slime creation. The check of the proposed new methods was done when comparing the crushing of tantalium ores of the Otboynoe deposit in cone inertial and centrifugal impact crushers and roller press. A research was conducted different crashing machines under laboratory and semi-industrial conditions. Different operation modes of crushers were also checked. The comparison of the crushing selectivity criterion and degree of crashing showed that the centrifugal impact crusher (CC) and roller press (RP) has the lower indexes than the cone inertial crusher (CIC). Degrees of crashing for different crashing machines are:centrifugal impact crusher – 10.1;roller press – 10.8;cone inertial crusher – 14.2. The crusher CC the selection criterion is 0,632 units, RP – 0.730, where as for the crusher CIC – 0.848 units. The best crushing mode for the crusher CIC-300? is as follows: turning angle of debalance is 0°, peripheral speed of a cone rotation – 1420 r.p.m, specific energy consumption- 4.99 kW*t/t. Crusher CIC-300? is the best for tantalium ores of the Otboynoe deposit. The new methodic are verification.INTRODUCTION Rare metal concentration circuits are complex, energy-intensive, and costly. The reasons for this include the multimetal nature of the rare metal ores, their volatile material composition and low grade. That is why careful selection of ore preparation circuits is of great importance for minimizing the energy inputs and maximizing the liberation of the valuable minerals. Recent research (Khopunov, 2011, Gazaleeva, 2015) has demonstrated that the most efficient comminution processes available to the mineral processing industry are selective disintegration, crushing and grinding, allowing to liberate the mineral particles along the cleavage in the comminution process. "Apatite is an important host mineral in igneous and metamorphic rocks for production of phosphate fertilizers and phosphoric acid, and a potential source of rare earth elements (REE) production. For dissolution of REEs, sulfuric acid is better leaching reagent to develop the economical viable process for recovering of rare earth elements from apatite ore. However, the efficiency of rare earth elements dissolution in H2SO4 is about 30 % due to the formation of calcium phosphate or calcium sulfate as precipitate. On the other hands, phosphorus is mainly produced from phosphate ore. However, when treating rare earth elements containing phosphate ore, rare earth elements were discharged. Hence, development of novel apatite ore treatment process is required for effective utilization of natural resources. In this study, apatite deposit associated with REE was treated with sulfuric acid leaching and two stage precipitation by oxalic acid (C2H2O4) and magnesium chloride (MgCl2) for recovering REE and phosphorus, individually. Results showed that it can be seen the vast majority of La (87.5%), Ce (87.3 %), Pr (86.1 %), Nd (85.2 %) and Y (90.9 %) were dissolved in 1 mol/L diluted H2SO4 solution from the apatite ore. As average leaching rate of REE, over 85% of REE were leached by the condition. In the first stage precipitation using the obtained pregnant leach solution from leaching, over 90% of REE was precipitated by oxalic acid addition after controlling pH to 1 by NH4OH solution. After pH changed to 8.5, over 90% of phosphorus was recovered as precipitate by magnesium chloride addition in second stage precipitation"

The effective removal of heavy metals from aqueous wastes is among the most important issues for many industrialized countries, How ever biosorption, i.e. the uptake of heavy metals by non- living biomass, has gained increased credibility during recent years. Biosorption of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution, on pretreated and immobilized Aspergillus niger was investigated in a batch and countinuous reactors. A.niger biomass pretreated by boiling in 0.5 N NaOH solution for 15 min, exhibited higher Cr(VI) removal capacity than autoclaved biomass. The optimum adsorption pH value observed for Cr(VI) ions was 2. The Cr(VI)removal rate increased with a decrease in pH. The influence of contact time, pH, Cr(VI) concentration, biomass concentration and temperature on Cr(VI) removal were also evaluated. Biosorption of Cr(VI) on pretreated biomass followed the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models.In this study A.niger biomass was immobilized in Na-alginate matrix. The biomass beads packed in a column were able to remove metal ions.In this study we used two different flow rate in a column, 1.5 mL/min and 3 mL/min.The breakthrough data obtained for Cr(VI) was adequately by the Thomas and Yan models and the adsorption capacity of the biomass was found to less than the adsorption capacity obtaind in the batch study. When the beads containing biomass become saturated with metal ions, the adsorbed metals were eluted using 0.5 N NaOH solution. Therefor nearly 90% of Cr(VI) was desorbed by NaOH solution.

Europe retains a modest position in world mining activity in terms of scale of production and mineral reserves but maintains a non-negligible role in the world mining industry. The concept of sustainable development resting on three pillars of economics, environment and social development has become an increasingly important factor in the European mining sector and a major influence on the related policies of the European Commission. Members of European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to the principles which promote sustainable development. A successful minerals planning policy should create the legal administrative environment that is necessary to ensure the sustainable supply of minerals to society within the framework of sustainable development. Members of the European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to principles which promote sustainable development. The challenge for sustainability is to find a balance between securing minerals supply, protecting the environment and achieving social progress. The point of balance depends on the range of policies adopted by governments. In this paper the development of the sustainability of the mining sector in EU and the social component of sustainability in the mineral industry is discussed.

Facing the optimization activities, which purpose is to minimize the copper processing costs, the main sources of their occurring were presented. In this purpose, the costs analysis was performed, divided to individual standings, for one of the polish copper beneficiation plants. It was proved, that the main component of the copper beneficiation costs is energy consumption, generated mainly in grinding and classification node, particularly by operating mills. The technological system ? grinding and classification node ? in KGHM Polska Miedz S.A., ZWR region Lubin was then selected to investigation. To evaluate the grinding and classification node, the energetic factors W were proposed, calculated on the basis of the energetic-technological data of process, given by node monitoring system. The correctness of the energetic factors selection to evaluate the work of this node and their practical application in industrial conditions was experimentally proved in other technological object. The selected technological object ? grinding and classification node ? was then mathematically modeled and optimized. The calculated energetic factors were the basis to build mathematical models, identifying industrial copper grinding and classification process. The models described correlation and character of dependency between factors and energetic-technical data of the process. These were regressive and neural networks models. On the basis of factors models, the optimization tasks were determined, which purpose was to select the optimal points of grinding and classification node work. Also, the estimated economical effect, possible to achieve after introduction of given monitoring values to grinding and classification node optimization system, was presented.

This paper describes, in detail, results obtained from a research study of a complex iron ore aiming to produce a pellet feed concentrate with at least 65% of Fe and less than 3.5% of SiO2 in the final concentrate. The work includes an ore desliming followed by column flotation at laboratory scale. The ore sample was from Carajás province - Brazil and represents a complex low grade compact itabirite ore, analyzing 35.9% Fe, 45.1% SiO2 and 0.57% of Al2O3. Yet, the feed was treated previously by magnetic separation and grounded to 97% < 20 µm; this sample was named MAG 2. The chemical and mineralogical characterization of the MAG 2 sample showed that Fe and SiO2 grades were 50.7% and 24.3% respectively and was composed mainly by hematite, goethite and quartz. The particle size distribution, using a laser diffraction technique, showed that 90% of the particles were < 18 µm; 50% less than 8 µm and 10% minor than 1 µm. When the cationic reverse flotation without desliming was tested the selectivity of the process was very low and did not meet the concentrate metallurgical goals of the pellet feed product. However, when desliming was applied prior to flotation, a concentrate product with chemical characteristics of the pellet feed was obtained. The best results after desliming and column flotation achieved global iron metallurgical recovery of 72% with Fe grade in the concentrate of 66.5% and 2.1% SiO2 using starch as depressant for the iron oxides minerals at 1200 g/t ? 1500 g/t and an amine as the quartz collector at 100 g/t concentration (pH constant, at 10.5). It is believed that the desliming stage was key in the separation of the iron bearing particles and has a high potential for the flotation process of this type of ores.
