"Reducing the amount of zinc and iron in lead concentrate is one of the important aspects of processing in lead and zinc flotation plants which results in improvement of lead concentrate quality and prevents zinc loss. In mineral flotation industries, lignin sulfonates are known for their depressant properties for both non-metallic and sulfide minerals such as pyrite and pyrrhotite.This paper investigates the effect of lignin sulfonate on flotation of galena, sphalerite and pyrite in sulfidic lead and zinc bearing ores. Batch flotation tests were carried out on a high pre-activated zinc samples. The feed contains 0.9% lead, 2.3% zinc and 7.5% iron. The dosage of all reagents such as sodium cyanide, zinc sulfate, ethyl xanthate and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were kept constant for lead flotation step except calcium lignin sulfonate (CLS) that was varied between 0 and 80 gr/ton.Results for lead rougher concentrate showed that the grade of lead increased by 2.7% while the recovery decreased around 4 % at the highest dosage of CLS. Furthermore, zinc recovery decreased by 6.3% with no significant change in grade. Iron recovery in lead rougher concentrate decreased by 2.3 % while the grade changed around 1%. In sphalerite flotation step, CLS dosage was changed in the range of 0 to 80 gr/ton while the dosage of other reagents such as copper sulfate, lime, amil xanthate and MIBC were kept constant. In this step, no decreasing in grade and recovery of zinc was observed, while iron recovery decreased. It was suggested that CLS has a depression effect on sphalerite in conjunction with other zinc depressants such as zinc sulfate and sodium cyanide. CLS was further used in plant with non-pre-activated zinc minerals. This paper presents a theoretical investigation on the ionic equilibrium of Fe(III)?Ni(II)?H2SO4?H2O system. A non-ideal speciation model is developed to calculate the concentration distribution of iron and nickel species in a mixed ferric and nickel sulphate aqueous solution over the pH range from 0 to 4 and temperature from 25 to 100°C. A series of speciation diagrams for iron and nickel species is plotted with the effects of ionic strength and temperature on the equilibrium constants being taken into account. The ionic strength-dependent equilibrium constant is treated through a semi-empirical Vasil'eV equation, which is based on an extended Debye?Hückel theory. A Helgeson model is applied to extrapolate the equilibrium constant to elevated temperature. The ionic equilibrium reactions are described by a group of numerical equations containing the temperature and ionic strength-dependent equilibrium constants, which are solved by the Newton-Raphson method. The speciation model is also applied to estimate the hydrogen ion activities and corresponding pH values. The calculated pH values are in agreement with the experimentally measured pH, and are compared to literature data and pH values produced by the Visual MINTEQ® program (a computer code for the calculation of chemical equilibrium in natural aqueous system). This investigation provides a deep insight into the ionic equilibrium behavior of a mixed metal sulphate aqueous system which commonly occurs in hydrometallurgical processing. The Cu-Co ore studied here belongs to the oxide type. The oxidation rates of copper and cobalt are69.30% and 78.78%, respectively. The content of Cu in ROM is 1.34% and that of Co is 0.096%. The ore contains 4.64% carbon.Based on the process mineralogy and previous metallurgy tests, the principalprocess flow-sheet of ?grinding fines 80% -0.074mm, sulphide flotation followed by oxide flotation, and flash flotation for oxides? has been determined.The handling of carbon is determined through tests. The depressant PNL-1 depressed carbon effectively, improved the recovery of sulphide minerals and reduced the reagents consumption.The operation of the flow-sheet was also changed to better at the same time. In this paper, the development of research and practice on the separation process of fine complex Cu-S ore at a Copper Mine in south of China, was discussed. Since early 1980s, various processes were used, such as the process of bulk flotation-separation, the process of selection flotation and the process of iso-flotation. Especially when the process of selective flotation was put into operation, further development was achieved in beneficiation results, but the difficulty in separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite has not been solved yet, so causing a poor quality of Cu concentrate. The author has successfully developed a new separation process characterized by the use of collector thionocarbamate and fast flotation. The selectivity of fine chalcopyrite and pyrite was greatly improved. This process supplied a new route for the treatment of fine complex Copper sulphide ores.

It is a well-known fact that usage of reverse cationic flotation in magnetite ores processing enables to improve the quality of magnetite concentrates. We designed an iron ore concentrate technology (with 70 -71 % of iron) including reverse cationic flotation in pneumo-mechanical flotators RIF (developed by RIVS Corporation, Russia) with good biodegradable etheramines as collectors for flotation of quartz. Practical application of high biodegradable flotation reagents decreases environmental impact risk of objects and enterprises of mining industrial complex. This work presents results of development of flotation technology for production of high quality ferruginous concentrates from magnetite ores of Russia and Ukraine deposits. In the Borborema Pegmatitic Province (Brazil) exploitations of several minerals are conducted by small producers. They use traditional techniques of gravity concentration in small-scale plants as jigs and vibratory tables. During decades the mining activity generated tailings with economic interest in particularly columbite-tantalite. Samples collected in tailing piles of a gravity plant were characterized in mineral composition, which shows in the heavy fraction the minerals spodumene, columbite-tantalite, ilmeno-hematite, garnet and cassiterite. The light fraction presents quartz, feldspar and muscovite. The degree of liberation of spodumene and columbite-tantalite were determined using optical microscopy that presents liberation in 100 µm (90% to columbite-tantalite and 100% to spodumene). Centrifugal concentrator Falcon SB-40 was used for concentration of these minerals and presents 65% recovery in mass to two stages with mass reduction about 85%.

The Knelson Concentrator is a centrifugal gravity concentrator composed of a high speed rotating bowl into which a mineral slurry is fed. The rotational motion creates a centrifugal acceleration up to an equivalent of 200 G. Under this acceleration, particles enter fluidised riffles along the side of the bowl, with the fluidisation allowing for the substitution of dense material for less dense. The separation mechanism is not fully understood and questions remain on the optimal residence time, slurry feed parameters and bowl surface profile to achieve a better separation. The positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) technique has been applied to record the motion of a -1700+1180 µm particle of a quartz-gold matrix, labelled with 18F radioisotope while it undergoes concentration inside a 3" laboratory scale Knelson Concentrator (KC-MD3) operated at 60 G. The slurry used was composed of quartz and magnetite. Particle trajectories during the first stage of the concentration process where the heavier particles centrifuge through the increasingly dense slurry towards the riffles of the bowl are shown with respect to time. This work reveals new information on particle motion inside the Knelson Concentrator and the results will be used for validation of developed separation model as well as optimisation of a centrifugal concentrator’s performance.

The large-scale vibrating screen has been applied widely in coal industry and other industrial areas as a kind of important device. As vibration mechanical device, it works very hardly and works in very bad environment so that the structure of screen is damaged easily. Therefore, it is very important that how to detect the fault of structure as early as possible to make the repair schedule reasonably and economically and to avoid the body hurt and device damage. As a kind of important structure of vibrating screen, the lower crossbeam is the main carrying structure and it is easily damaged, so it is regarded as a researched object in this thesis and it is tested under the load in the laboratory. Based on the test, acoustic emission wave signals can be got-ten by modern acoustic emission testing technique. Then, the ?wavelet packet - energy? from the characteristics of acquiring signals is used as neural network input vector. In the BP network structure design, the design of a hidden layer with variable number of BP network is established. Based on the error by contrast, the best nerve number can be identified in the hidden layer. Through integrated analysis, using Levenberg-Marquard BP study algorithm, network-training errors are relatively small, the acoustic emission signal is used in BP neural network as a pattern of recognition. In Matlab6.5, neural network model identification is created and taking advantage of nonlinearity and the ability of learning and memory of Neural Network, this model is fixed by training structure of network with training samples. The work presented shows that acoustical emission signal processing and research on early fatigue fault diagnosis based on the wavelet and the neural network is viable.

"This work presents the results of the development of a flowchart for the processing of copper production dusts resulting in the production of of lead sulphate, tribasic lead sulfate (TBLS), ammonium perrhenate, zinc, copper-cadmium cake.Dust having the following composition (wt. %): Pb 39.3, Zn 6.5, Cu 5.5, Stotal 10.8, As 1.05, SiO2 0.6, Cd 0.8, Bi 0.04, Ag 0.02, Re 0.03 was used in the work. Chemical and X-ray analyses indicated that lead, zinc and copper are generally present in dusts in the form of sulfates, various amounts of oxides, sulfides, silicates; sulfur (according to chemical analysis data) is present in the form of sulfates (~ 90%) and in the form of sulfides (~ 10%).Studies have been made on two-stage stripping of copper production dusts containing lead, zinc, copper, cadmium, rhenium in the form of various compounds, at first with soda solution, then with nitric acid solution. It has been indicated that the combination of the operations allows the recovery of 98% rhenium, 82% lead, 92% copper, and 96% zinc and cadmium each in the solution. Furthermore, at the stage of dust leaching with soda, 80% of rhenium and 0.01% of nonferrous metals each are recovered in the solution. Remaining quantities of all metals are recovered in nitric acid solution up to maximum values. Such behaviour of metals is caused by metal phase content in dusts and properties being formed during leaching of compounds. At the stage of dust leaching with soda solutions, carbonates with various compositions are formed due to the exchange reaction between nonferrous metal sulfates and sodium carbonate. The conversion of PbSO4 into PbCO3 is apparently occurs in the solid phase and the conversion of readily watersoluble zinc, copper, and cadmium sulfates into that of carbonate salts occurs in the liquid phase. Rhenium passes into solution due to the presence of rhenium greater quantity in dust in the form of readily soluble perrhenate. Some portion of the perrhenate is, probable, blocked by lead sulfate and liberated in the conversion of PbSO4 into PbCO3."

Accurate information of physical, chemical and metallurgical quality characteristics such as moisture content, iron grade and particle size are crucial for successful process control and for producing products within customer specifications. Correct moisture content of pellet feed is an important variable for successful balling of iron ore pellets and to minimize power consumption in the sintering process. Control of the filtering process in the pelletizing plant is therefore essential for both productivity and high product quality. The current measurement systems for moisture content at LKAB are based on two types of manual grab sampling, subsequently analyzed with rapid moisture determination methods. Previous studies of the measurement systems have indicated high sampling variability resulting in lowered possibilities for successful process control. The objective of the present study is to evaluate an alternative filter sampling approach and testing of on-line Infra-Red analysis (IR-analysis). On-line IR-analysis has the advantage of eliminating physical sample extraction and allowing for continuous monitoring of moisture content. However, this approach is sensitive to the surrounding environment, making careful calibration and control crucial for the quality of measurement results. Furthermore, as IR-sensors only target the surface of the conveyed pellet feed, several incorrect sampling errors need to be considered and counteracted to eliminate sampling bias and reduce the remaining measurement variability. Variographic characterization was applied to the two current grab sampling approaches of combined filtered material, to the alternative filter sampling method, and to the On-line IR-analysis. The results indicate that both the sampling of separate filters (using composite sampling and ISO-standardized moisture analysis), as well as a calibrated and well- maintained IR-sensor can improve the relative variability significantly, by lowering the total measurement system variance from 60% to 25%.

China is rich in iron ore resources, but most of these ores are low-grade, polymetallic and refrac-tory ones. Furthermore, with the rapid development of chinese iron & steel industry, the comprehen-sive recovery of these ores is becoming more and more important. The tin, zinc-containing complex iron ores are typical polymetallic and intractable ones, and great reserves of them are found in China. At present, they have not been efficiently utilized. In this paper, based on the investigation of basic physicochemical properties of the tin, zinc-bearing iron concentrates, taken from a mineral processing plant, the mineralogy reason that these concentrates are so intractable and refractory is found out, using advanced microscopic testing methods, such as optical microscope (OM), Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM), X-ray diffrac-tion (XRD), etc. It is found that the symbiotic relationship of iron, tin and zinc metallic minerals are very complicated, and magnetite in the concentrate is closely symbiotic or enwrapped by fine cassi-terite and sphalerite. So it is difficult to separate tin and zinc completely from the iron concentrates by simple regrinding and physical separation method. This investigation provides theoretical guid-ance for developing new approaches for utilizing these concentrates.

Vanadium ore is widely distributed in black rock series (Fan, Zhang and Ye, 2004) in many provinces of China, which accounts for 87% (Zuo, Peng and Dugang, 2001) of vanadium reserves in China. In Cambrian black rock series in south Qinling Mountain, there are large or medium-sized sedimentary deposits such as Zhongcun vanadium deposit, Yinhua vanadium deposit, Qianjiaping vanadium deposit, Xiajiadian gold-vanadium deposit and Lengshuigou vanadium deposit. The vanadium is distributed in other minerals mainly in the form of isomorphic replacement. These types of ore are characterized by no independent vanadium mineral, low grade and vast reserves. Now in China the vanadium extraction technology is backward with low utilization rate of resources. The difficulties of vanadium extraction from black rock series are that the enrichment by means of mechanical beneficiation is difficult; the cost of direct chemical extraction is high and the emission of waste gas from pyrogenic process does not conform to environmental protection standard. Therefore the study of vanadium occurrence, the improvement & optimization of vanadium extraction technology and the realization of pollution-free and low-cost extraction of vanadium from black rock series are of great and realistic importance for environment-friendly exploitation & utilization of vanadium resource in China. The study is based on carbon content in ore of Cambrian black rock series in south Qinling Mountain. Two kinds of ore are selected. Vanadium ore with low carbon content (TC<1%) is taken as Sample 1 while vanadium ore with high carbon content (TC>10%) as Sample 2. Based on analysis of ore?s lithologic features and vanadium?s occurrence, a vanadium extraction technological process characterized by selective grinding, low cost and no pollution is proposed.

Large-scale continuous ?Resin-In-Pulp? process tests were conducted at Irgiredmet. The object for testing was the sample of oxidized gold ore from one of Siberian deposit. Weak-base ion ex-change resin PuroGold was used as adsorbent. The duration of ?Resin-In-Pulp? tests was sufficient for a completing of three cycles ?Adsorption/Elution?. Gold in feed was 0.95 mg/L. Gold in solid phase of adsorption tails? 0.065 g/t. Gold in liquid phase of adsorption tails? 0.026 mg/L. Total gold in adsorption tails ?0.11 g/t. Gold recovery ?94.3 %. The use of regenerated resin had practically no effect on gold losses with adsorption tails. Alkaline cyanide solution (NaCN-20g/L, NaOH- 5g/L) was used as eluent for gold elution from loaded resin. Elution temperature ?60 °C. Number of eluent bed volumes passed ?10. Loaded resin analysis was following (g/ton): Au? 1700~1250; Ag? 400~460; Cu? 250~450; Zn? 5100~9600; Fe? 860~1200. Elution efficiency: Au? 95.3%~97.8%; Ag? 84.0%~88.0%; Cu? 84.0%~88.0%; Zn? 97.0%~99.0%. Although high zinc resin loading was shown zinc was eluted efficiently. The adsorption properties of fresh PuroGold resin, PuroGold resin after 3 cycle ?Adsorp-tion-Elution?cycles in comparison with AM-2B resin were tested. It was shown from adsorption isotherms that selectivity of PuroGold resin slightly less in comparison with AM-2B resin mainly due to its higher zinc adsorption properties. It was founded on base of test results that adsorption properties of PuroGold resin was practically constant during three ?Adsorption/Elution? cycles. Gold may be efficiently recovered by resin tested. There were no difficulties during gold elution from loaded resin and its regeneration. PuroGold resin was recommended for industrial use in RIP process. Process design criteria were developed and plant design is on progress at the moment.

A detailed study was undertaken to beneficiate sub-grade iron ore sample from Kenojhar District, Orissa, India containing 57% Fe (T), 7.7% SiO2, 4.8% Al2O3, 4 % L.O.I. 0.4% TiO2,1.3 % Mn and traces of S(T) to make it suitable for the user industry. The mineralogical study indicated that it predominantly consists of haematite with subordinate amounts of goethite and clay. Quartz, Cryptomelane / Psilomelane, Pyrolusite, Gibbsite, Feldspar and Muscovite mica were present in very minor to trace amounts. The Denver grind ability tests indicated, that the sample could be categorized as ?medium soft to medium.? The Bond ball mill work index was determined to be 14.19 kwh per short ton. The beneficiation process involved classification followed by tabling of the classified sand, ground to minus 48 mesh size. The table slimes were subjected to Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS). The developed process yielded a composite concentrate from tabling and WHIMS operations assaying 65% Fe(T), 2% SiO2, 1.8% Al2O3, 2% Mn and 0.9% LOI with a recovery of 60.1% Fe (T), amounting to 52.5 wt.% yield. To meet the size specifications for pellet making, it was further ground. Dewatering studies were also carried out on the ground combined concentrate and rejects. The thickener area of ground combined concentrate using 0.02 kg/t of Sufloc A 1115 flocculant was 0.02 m2/tonne of dry solids per 24 h. And for the combined rejects using 0.12 kg/t of flocculant, it was 0.035 m2/tonne of dry solids per 24 h. The moisture content, in the pressure filtration cake, in the ground combined concentrate product was 10.0%, and productivity was 506.7 kg/m2h. Thus, by thickening and filtration of process products, 90% of water used in the process could be recovered. The study highlights the development of a simple and cost effective flowsheet with almost complete water recovery for a subgrade iron ore sample. Keywords: tabling, WHIMS, thickener, filtration

Coal-based Direct Reduction in Interior-combustion Shaft Kiln (CDR/ISK) is a brand-new technique. Compared with the traditional Coal-based Direct Reduction (CDR) technique, its main character is to use Interior-combustion Shaft Kiln (ISK) as the reactor of direct reduction. After being crushed and grinded, iron ore is made into green pellet, which will be surface-coated by coal fines. Then, the surface-coated green pellet can be directly reduced in ISK. The pellet should not be too dry and should be charged from the top of ISK. Oxygen-contained air should be blasted into ISK to keep the temperature in it higher than 1000 degrees centigrade, at which iron oxide will start direct reduction. The reduced pellet will be discharged from the bottom of ISK and after de-surface-coated, spherical Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) can be gained. The volume of carbon monoxide in the off-gas discharged from ISK is less than one per cent. By using this technique to get one tonne DRI, the consumption of coal is about 300kg of fixed carbon, which is much lower than the energy consumption by using other CDR techniques. There is a lot of complex refractory iron ore in China, which remains unexploited. The iron-bearing minerals in this kind of the iron ore can not be beneficiated economically by present technique of gravity, magnetic, flotation or magnetic roasting because the iron minerals are too very finely disseminated to be liberated, or, the iron minerals are too similar to gangue to be separated each other. By using CDR/ISK, complex refractory iron ore can be directly reduced in lower temperature and all kinds of iron mineral can be turned into iron metal. As the grains of iron metal growing larger during direct reduction, magnetic separation can be used to separate iron metal from gangue mineral, thus high-grade iron metal fines can be gained. According to the experiments, the grade of iron metal fines is above 90 percent and the recovery of iron is higher than 90 percent. The consumption of coal to process one tonne of complex refractory iron ore is only about 90kg of fixed carbon.

This paper, by studying the surface properties of pure dolomite minerals separated from representative marine sedimentary rare earth-bearing phosphate ores in Zhijin, Guizhou, aims to study the effect of different anions on the ? potential of dolomite. The research findings showed that the dolomite mineral had a point of zero charge (PZC) at pH 6.5, and the PZC shifted towards lower pH values with addition of anion SiO32- and PO43-. Experimental work was performed using a bench scale autoclave to evaluate the effects that leaching temperature, pressure, initial acid concentration, and the solid to liquid ratio have on the behaviour of base metals and platinum group metals in a high-pressure sulphuric acid oxygen leaching system. The concentrations of metals in the leach solution were measured over time at different leaching conditions. At the conditions investigated, the initial acid concentration had the largest influence on the copper leaching kinetics, while the leaching rates of the other precious metals (OPMs: rhodium, ruthenium, and iridium) were highly dependent on the leaching temperature. A set of chemical reactions that can be used to describe the leaching chemistry was proposed, and the associated reaction kinetics were quantified. As a first estimation, the rate expressions were considered first order, and the rate constants were determined using the method of least squares, considering the experimental and predicted concentrations obtained for the different leaching conditions. Of the OPM compounds, the sulphides showed the fastest dissolution rate, followed by OPM alloys, and finally the OPM oxides. During the initial leaching stages, base metals and OPMs competed for the available dissolved oxygen, with oxygen being preferentially used for copper leaching. Precipitation of OPMs during the initial leaching stages can be ascribed to copper and nickel dissolution according to exchange reactions between dissolved OPMs and copper present as digenite or nickel present as polydymite. Control of the autoclave residence time is of particular importance to enhance the selectivity of this leaching step, given the dependence of the PGM leaching rates on the extent of copper dissolution.

Flotation is the most common beneficiation route for tungsten ores, but the predominance of minerals with similar surface properties poses a real challenge. This study investigates the use of Falcon centrifugal separators for gangue minerals removal and desliming prior to flotation. A typical tungsten-bearing skarn ore (Tabuaço, Portugal) is used, containing scheelite (CaWO4) associated with dense calcium-bearing silicates (vesuvianite), fluorite, apatite and light silicates (feldspars) as gangue minerals. Two types of Falcon bowls (Falcon UF and Falcon SB) were used, prior to flotation tests with fatty acids as collectors and a combination of sodium carbonate and sodium silicate as gangue minerals depressants. This flowsheet was compared with a reverse configuration, using flotation prior to Falcon concentrator, and with a classical flowsheet, using hydrocyclone and flotation. Gravity pre-concentration and desliming with the Falcon concentrator were optimized through the design of experiments (DoE) methodology. The influences of pulp density, rotational speed, feed flowrate and fluidisation pressure (for the Falcon SB) were studied for both bowls. Results showed that the Falcon can be used as a desliming and pre-concentrating apparatus. Separation performances depend mainly on rotary speed and pulp density for the Falcon UF, whereas rotary speed and fluidisation pressure are the main parameters for the Falcon SB. With only one stage of Falcon SB, an enrichment ratio of 7.9 is obtained with a 65% WO3 recovery while 89% of apatite and fluorite are rejected, which constitutes a very good selectivity. In comparison, Falcon UF shows lower enrichment ratios, around 2.7. In terms of desliming, Falcon UF is as efficient as the hydrocyclone, while the Falcon SB is significantly more efficient. Hence, the use of Falcon SB prior to flotation improves the overall performance of the tungsten flotation route by desliming the flotation feed while pre-concentrating the scheelite. It impacts very advantageously the flotation, as most of the calcium-bearing minerals are eliminated. A Falcon SB stage prior to flotation yields a final concentrate grade of 29.7% WO3 with a recovery of only 36.8 % that should be optimized as the reagents dosages were not adapted to the pre-concentrated feed.

In this paper, the hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite particles produced with different laboratory mills has been studied; different grinding mechanism in themills made some changes in particles shape, Image Analysis (IA) method was used to determine the shape properties of chalcopyrite particles which are ground by a laboratory ball mill, rod mill and ceramic ball mill. The shape characters are stated in terms of shape factors such as circularity, convexity, roundness and regularity factor. Hallimond tube was used to float chalcopyrite particles followed by determination of critical surface tension of particles, this parameter used as a criterion to study the wetting behavior of chalcopyrite particles. The correlation between shape properties and critical surface tension of chalcopyrite particles showed that the hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite was affected by the shape. Investigations showed that the circular, round and more convex particles that produced with ceramic ball mill had lower hydrophobicity with higher critical surface tension (?c). The results also showed that the hydrophobicity of particles ground by ball and rod mills increased with the decrease of roundness, circularity, convexity and regularity factor of particles. The shortage of water supply in some regions of the globe is particularly problematic and forces mining companies to adopt alternatives like pumping sea water from the ocean up to the mining sites. Although deaeration of sea water or the use of lined pipelines are known options to prevent corrosion during pumping, a recent development of a new corrosion inhibitor allowed the use of simple mild steel pipelines for this purpose. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the recent advances of this technology in protecting against not only general corrosion but localized corrosion, main cause of corrosion-related pipeline failures. Corrosion studies were carried out using electrochemical techniques, weight loss balance as well microscopy surface analysis in order to measure and therefore evaluate the treatment efficiency. The right dosage of corrosion inhibitors may vary depending on water composition and characteristics of each system. Differences were observed depending on the sea water source. Pretreatment of metallic surface impacts the observed corrosion rate which can be as low as 3.6 mpy. The absence of pitting or localized corrosion was achieved in aerated seawater.
