This study examines the possible relationships between compositional variability in non-hydrothermal manganese nodules and large-scale environmental parameters. In the central SW Pacific (145-180° W and 20-O° S) the level of primary productivity, the rates and proportions of carbonate, silica and organic matter supply to the sediments, and the position of the seafloor relative to the Calcium Carbonate Compensation Depth (CCD) appear to directly influence nodule composition. Four zones of nodule composition are apparent. These zones correlate fairly well with the level of primary productivity in surface waters, as estimated by satellite-based measurement of chlorophyll content. The observed correlations between surface productivity and nodule composition are consistent with the contention that the dominant source of several transition metals in these deposits (i.e , Mn, Ni, Cu. and Zn) is provided by removal of fine-grained particulate matter from the water column by biological means. Subsequent decay of organic matter in sediments augments the content of these metals in the nodules through oxic and sub-oxic diagenesis. The opposite behavior of Fe and Co content may in part result from mineralogical and dilution effects.

"The conceptual basis of the developed model is based on the ideas that evolution of geological-geomorphological structure of the CCZ is controlled by four types of geologic factors: geodynamic, sedimentary, volcano-tectonic and erosion-lithodynamic. In terms of time span two factors (geodynamic and sedimentary) can be considered as permanent and the other two as sporadic.The geodynamic factor is responsible for two interrelated geological processes. One is going under conditions of the axial zones of spreading centers and results in formation of the CCZ basement. Historically this process is considered as a starting point for each of the heterochronous fragments of the CCZ. The second one controls gradual shifting towards the Pacific Plate (Hawaiian direction) and subsidence to greater depths of the neogenic fragments (basement). Thus, those processes control basic topography, geomorphology and the seabed depth within the CCZ.Volcanogenic-hydrothermal activity of the EPR is one of the main sources of the ore components, which finally compose manganese nodules as a result of complicated processes of their dissemination and transportation to the bottom in dissolved and organically bound forms.The role of the other constant factor (sedimentary) is displayed in two ways. Firstly, initial relief is smoothed under the influence of this factor, which, subsequently, makes favorable conditions for manganese nodules formation. Secondly, it favors transportation of the majority of the ore components, participating in manganese nodules formation into zones of active nodules formation."

Ocean observatory technologies permit uninterrupted, real-time observation of dynamic seafloor environments such as gas hydrate deposits and hydrothermal vent fields that are of both scientific and economic interest. Such observations enable new discoveries of linkages between physical, chemical and biological processes and could permit continuous monitoring of environmental variables during mining operations. Ocean Networks Canada operates the NEPTUNE and VENUS cabled observatories in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. The offshore NEPTUNE observatory supports instruments at two gas hydrate sites on the continental margin off Vancouver Island, and in the hydrothermal vent fields of the Endeavour segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The primary focus of the gas hydrate field observations is to understand the dynamics of the growth and stability of outcropping and sub-seafloor hydrate deposits. Outcropping hydrates at 840 m depth in Barkley Canyon have been monitored for the past 3 years with a mobile instrument platform known as Wally, which is operated over the Internet by a research group in Germany. This tracked vehicle carries standard oceanographic sensors, acoustic current metres, cameras and methane sensors. Data indicate a relationship between degassing of hydrates and tidal currents. In 2012-2013 two high-resolution sonar towers were added to the hydrate field to provide precision tracking of Wally and to monitor volume changes in the outcropping hydrate mounds. A large subsurface hydrate deposit occurs at the Clayoquot Slope site, where bottom depth is 1260 metres. Monitoring instrumentation is currently being established at this location. The Central Indian Ridge (CIR), the boundary between the African and Indian plates, forms a SSE trending mid-oceanic accretionary system in the equatorial Indian Ocean (Fig. 1), extending to the northerly Carlsberg Ridge spreading center, and terminating at the Rodrigues Triple Junction (RTJ; 25°30'S, 70°06'E) by intersection with the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) and the Southeast Indian Ridge (SEIR). Crustal divergence of the CIR proceeds at intermediate rates; a progressive increase of ocean floor accretion towards the south is documented: the present half spreading rate and ridge trend change from 1.80 cm/a and N142° at the equator to 2.73 cm/a and N152° north of the triple point. The topography of the central rift zone is rather smooth compared to slow spreading analogues such as the SWIR, but slightly more rugged than the SEIR. The rift valley is 500-800 m deep, 10-15 km wide and usually well defined. The inner floor, 2-4 km in width, is relatively flat along the axis and more variable in cross section, and lies at 2700-3200 m depth. Off set fracture zones striking generally N60° . in southern portions of the CIR and laterally displacing median valleys by as much as 8 km are often bent, uplifting crustal sequences up to several hundred meters. The length of individual spreading segments varies between a few and several tens of kilometers. The vertical displacement on normal faults are larger while lineaments are shorter than those of the faster spreading SEIR. China, India and South Korea are three developing/newly industrialized countries that can show a very positive economic development in latter years. Moreover the three countries also feature amongst the countries with the highest level of activity in deep seabed mining today. India was the first country to achieve Pioneer Investor status in accordance with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The country has carried out comprehensive exploitation of nodule deposits in the Central Indian Basin. India has an active programme for development of mining technology and internationally, India is probably the leading nation today as far as processing technology is concerned. China for its part has established a central coordination unit for its deep seabed involvement and its exploration and technology development is already well underway. South Korea has applied for Pioneer Investor status and much indicates that it will be allocated its own minesite in the autumn of 1994. The three countries are in mutual contact in the area of the Law of the Sea. Korea contacted both China and India when drawing up its application for pioneer investor status and allocation of minesite. However, no cooperation exists between the three regarding for example technology development, economic analysis or in studies of the environmental consequences. The main purpose of this paper is to focus on why and how the three countries would be well advised to cooperate in the above areas. Economic, technological and organizational aspects all point in that direction.

New Zealand lies astride a convergent plate boundary that extends north-eastwards from the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) to Tonga. This boundary is marked by the Kermadec arc, c. 1200 km of which falls within New Zealand’s EEZ, and which is host to numerous volcanic edifices both on the arc and in a zone immediately behind the arc to the west. In 1999, thirteen volcanic centres in the southern 260 km of the arc were surveyed for their hydrothermal plumes with seven of them discharging vent fluids into the surrounding ocean. Three of the seven volcanic centres have had mineralised rocks recovered from them during dredging and submersible operations, namely Brothers, Rumble II West and Clark. Presentday plume data combined with mineralogical evidence indicate that the vent sites at Rumble II West and Clark are waning, although the presence of Cu-rich sulphides in samples recovered from Rumble II West suggest there may be a massive sulphide (Cu-Zn-Pb-Ba ± Au) deposit located within the caldera. Brothers volcanic centre is host to the largest polymetallic mineral deposit discovered along the Kermadec arc and has numerous, up to 7 m tall chimneys within a c. 600 x 200 m area located on its NW caldera wall. Geochemical data indicate that concentrations of base metals are variable and depend critically on sample type. When combined with mineralogical and plume data, this indicates addition of a magmatic fluid component to the vent fluids.

INTRODUCTION Seafloor Massive Sulphides are typically found near the oceanic ridges at larger water depths (>1km). The physical properties of SMS, as shown in table 1, are comparable to the properties of weak rock. One of the technical challenges to enable extraction from these locations is the cutting or excavation process. Experiments have shown that the energy needed to excavate the material may increase with water depth (Alvarez Grima et al. 2015). Besides that, it is demonstrated that rock that fails brittle in atmospheric conditions can fail more or less in a plastic fashion when present in a high pressure environment, as would be the case at large water depths. The goal of this research is to identify the physics of the cutting process and to develop this into a model in which the effect of hydrostatic and pore pressures is included. The cutting of rock is initiated by pressing a tool into the rock. As a result, at the tip of the tool a high compressive pressure occurs, which leads to the formation of a crushed zone. Depending on the shape of the tool and the cutting depth, shear failures might emanate from the crushed zone, which will eventually expand as tensile fractures that can reach to the free rock surface. Through this process intact rock will be disintegrated to a granular medium. For an overview of the process (figure 1). Additionally, the presence of water in the pores of and surrounding the rock influences the cutting process through drainage effects. The most relevant effects are weakening when compaction and strengthening when dilation occurs in shearing and tension. Deformation of the rock causes the pore volume to change, resulting in a under or over pressure. As a result, the pore fluid needs to flow. The magnitude of the potential under pressure is limited through cavitation of the pore fluid, limiting further reduction of the pore pressure (figure 2). The drainage effects cause the rock cutting process in a submerged environment to show a stronger dependency of both the hydrostatic pressure as well as the deformation rate (figure 3).

This is a part of the joint KIGAM-GNS-NIWA 3-year study of ferromanganese modules in the Campbell Nodule Field, east of Campbell Plateau to determine age distribution, growth rates and geochemical evolution in relation to geographic setting. The petrography, chemistry, inferred genesis, and 10Be/9Be dating of the nodules were described in the science report of GNS (Chang et al., 2003a, 2003b; Graham et al., 2003a) and presented at UMI (Chang et al., 2003c; Graham et al., 2003b). The morphology and distribution of ferromanganese nodules were also published in detail (Wright et al., 2005). This presentation is only concentrated on the mineralogy and chemistry of the nodules.

The purpose of this presentation is to review the history of offshore non- fisheries resource development since World War II, as an introduction to a planned symposium on offshore resources scheduled for the 1996 UMI Conference. After World War II the United States became the leader in offshore oil and gas production, deep ocean drilling technologies, offshore terminals, platforms and production systems, and natural gas recovery and transport. Wartime skills in acoustic profiling and antisubmarine warfare were transferred into commercially important geophysical exploration techniques. The application of ocean drilling and geophysical techniques permitted the recognition and elucidation of plate tectonics patterns, development of seafloor spreading theory, and the transformation of our knowledge of seabed and subseabed strata. After John Mero's studies and recommendations for developing marine manganese nodules in the late 1950's interest in nonfuel minerals grew rapidly. The formation of international deep sea mining consortia in the 1960's was accompanied by a flurry of ocean engineering development, minerals prospecting and associated environmental studies The Santa Barbara Oil Spill of 1969 resulted in a moratorium on both offshore energy and minerals leasing by the Depart- ment Interior, and catalyzed the development of new Federal legislation in 1972. In 1973 the offshore energy moratorium was lifted in response to the Arab oil embargo, and offshore energy activities surged for a time. Subsea mining system are designed for the following, principally different, tasks: Dreding - The destruction and removal of seabed sediments overlaying the bedrock. Cleaning - The competence of the system to systematically remove the deposits from an undulating hard bedrock with irregular pulleys, channels and fissures. Factors that influence the choice of dredging equipment for a specific project are project requirements such as environmental conditions, location and water depth. However, the most important selection criteria are soil conditions. As a consequence, possible dredging systems, must be evaluated for the following, principally different, characteristics: Dredging proficiency - The destruction of the strata by the equipment. System stability - The capability of the soil to support the subsea equipment The above parameters are determined by the strength characteristics and the bearing capacitv_ of the soil. The author describes the processes involved in excavating the subsea deposits and (transporting the gathered soil as a water-soil mixture to the surface using different excavation and transport methods.

Six active Kermadec arc submarine volcanoes located between 34°S and 36°30’S were mapped and sampled by an interdisciplinary inter-institutional research team between April and July 2005 using submersibles Pisces V and Pisces IV aboard the mother ship the R/V Ka’imikai-o-Kanaloa. The purpose of the expedition was to study the relationship between hydrothermal activity, formation of hydrothermal mineral deposits, and the biodiversity of life associated with the hydrothermal vents. Of the volcanoes examined, all showed evidence of hydrothermal activity, including metal-rich plumes and helium anomalies. Only two of the volcanoes, namely Brothers and Clark, showed chimneys and surficial polymetallic sulfide deposition. Hydrothermal venting at a water depth of approximately 1,650 meters near the base of the northwest caldera wall of Brothers volcano has produced a field of chimneys, some of them seven metres high and discharging black smoker venting. Temperatures up to 300°C were measured from the active vents. Clark volcano has a double cone summit at a water depth of 875 meters. The shallowest cone has a near-summit hydrothermal vent field with five-meter tall venting chimneys with smaller structures around the periphery.

Deep sea mining operations by nature are performed (or planned) in challenging environments. Another typifying characteristic of deep sea mining operations is the relatively high investment cost. This combination challenges engineers to design configurations able to mine the desired production rate in an efficient way. As design choices made for individual systems impact other parts of the system, it is vital to follow an integral approach to establish the one optimal overall system. Dredging and especially dredge mining learns that the excavation system, the slurry transportation system and the processing plant cannot be considered as individual sub-systems. These systems in any ?traditional dredge mining? operation interrelate to such extend that they must be developed towards an integral solution. The nominal production, peak production and variability of these figures must match for all subsystems in the overall mining system to optimize the mining efficiency. This study was investigated about physico-chemical parameter such as water temperature, salinity, inorganic nutrients and total organic carbon (TOC). CTD (Model: Sea-Bird 911 Plus) castings were carried out on two transects in the northeast equatorial Pacific Ocean. As a part of the Korea Deep-sea Environment Study (KODES), inorganic nutrients and TOC were determined at 41 stations located from 131° to 136°W along 10.5°N and from 17° to 5°N along 131.5°W (Fig. 1). We particularly chose KODES Long-term Monitoring Station (St. KOMO) to observe for the annually environmental baseline study in the contract area. [ ]

IHC Merwede is world market leader in the construction of specialist dredging equipment; it is a company with a rich history. The Netherlands is a coastal western country for which water management is a very important issue. Without the enclosure of the coastal areas with dikes and dunes almost two third of the Netherlands would be flooded. These activities are mostly performed by the dredging industry and are the foundation of the dredging industry as it is today. Besides land protection this industry also carries out infrastructure maintenance and performs land reclamation projects. In essence the dredging industry is specialized in horizontal excavation activities and operations in shallow waters with the purpose of gathering bottom sediments and disposing it at a different location. The development is that the activities are moving to deeper waters to a depth of up to 150m. A few years ago IHC Merwede received a request to perform the shallow water excavation techniques at a depth of approximately 2000 meters for the deep sea mining market. In response to the increasing number of requests for deep sea dredging and mining application solutions, IHC Merwede combined all of its activities in this sector to create a new, specially equipped operational unit, IHC Deep Sea Dredging & Mining (IHC DSDM).

Diamond production from the reworked beach and river channel gravels along the west coasts of South Africa and Namibia is well known throughout the world, not only for the exceptional quality of the diamonds, but also for the sheer scope of the operations. To date an estimated 140 million carats have been produced from the resource worth some US$40 billion in today's money terms. It is therefore not surprising that it didn't take long before the attention turned towards the possible extension of this valuable diamond resource on similar submerged beaches in the adjacent territorial waters of South Africa and Namibia. This has proved to be a very successful move as the marine production in Namibia today constitutes 48% of that country's total diamond production. Although small scale recovery of diamonds from the sea commenced in the 1950's, the first large scale production came from the operations of the Texan entrepreneur, Sam Collins, in the 1960's. The De Beers Group, which took over Sam Collin's operations in 1969 had all the concession areas, as well as the financial and human resources to tackle the new mining frontier in the correct way by years of data gathering (ie diamond reserves and seafloor terrain studies) before commencing with large scale mining operations in the 1980's. Those who are familiar with the beach mining operations along the South African and Namibian west coasts will have appreciation for the daunting task of surgically removing the payable portion of diamond deposits from the non-payable material on the one hand, and the complex uneven fractured and gullied bed-rock floor of the deposits on the other hand. Not to mention the additional complexities of large boulders and hard calcretised diamond gravel layers (conglomerate) which are sometimes associated with the deposits. It was a natural development that the sea diamond mining operations were approached with the known information of the land operations, attempting to duplicate land mining operations in the sea, but taking cognisance of the variations of the terrain in the different areas. Between April 2000 and April 2002, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) Division of Exploration and Mining has led 6 research expeditions totalling 160 days ship time in waters of Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Indonesia and Australia. Five expeditions were undertaken aboard the Australian research vessel Franklin following successful competitive research proposals, and the sixth used the Indonesian vessel Baruna Jaya VIII (see Table 1). In addition, two CSIRO participants joined JOIDES Resolution for the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 193 in the Manus Basin of PNG. The major scientific objective underpinning these expeditions was to locate and study present-day seafloor and sub-seafloor hydrothermal ore-forming activity in order to develop improved methods of exploring for ancient mineral deposits on land that originally formed by similar processes. The research has been supported financially by a number of Australian-based mineral companies, by Australian international aid agencies, and by appropriation funds from CSIRO, and was conducted in collaboration with researchers from Australia, Indonesia, Portugal, New Zealand, United States of America, South Korea, and the host nations. Building upon earlier successes in the 1986-1997 PACLARK-PACMANUS programs in the Woodlark and Manus Basins of PNG, we have sought to examine a wider range of geological settings in which ancient orebodies are inferred to have formed, including both volcanic and sediment-hosted environments. We have now visited volcanic arcs, fore-arc and triple-junction related submarine volcanoes, and back arc basins associated with convergent plate margins in the SW Pacific and SE Asia, as well as conceptual Mississippi-Valley-type targets associated with warm seeps at passive margins in the Great Australian Bight (see Figure 1). Surveys ranged from northern Sulawesi via far western Bismarck volcanic arc near PNG-Indonesia border, through the eastern Manus Basin and the Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni chain in PNG, the western Solomon Islands festoon, the San Cristobal arc, parts of the Vitiaz arc, to the northern and southern New Hebrides arc in the Solomons and Vanuatu.

Magmatic-hydrothermal activity in the South-West Pacific and SE Asian island arcs during the Tertiary has created a premier copper-gold province with numerous, commercially attractive base and precious metal deposits. This activity continues to the present day, especially in submarine sectors of those arcs where modern technologies enable direct observation of ore-forming processes in action. Until recently, however, the volcanic island arcs of Indonesia escaped such attention. The Indonesia-Australia Survey for Submarine Hydrothermal Activity (IASSHA), involved three cruises with KR Baruna Jaya VIII, focused particularly on the Sangihe arc; Tomini Bay, Sulawesi, including the vicinity of isolated Colo volcano; and the Sunda Strait including the neighborhood of Krakatau volcano. IASSHA 2001 and 2003 cruises studied the arc and behind-arc sectors of the Sangihe volcanic island chain extending northwards from Quaternary volcanoes on the northeastern tip of Sulawesi, near Manado, to the Kawio Islands near the border with the Philippines (Fig. 1). This chain lies above a west-dipping Wadati-Benioff seismic zone whose subduction trench is obscured by accreted sediments and mélange, forming the Talaud-Mayu ridge. West of the main active chain and extending northwards from Manado there is a subparallel ridge (The Manado Line) surmounted by a number of high (>2000 m) seamounts of uncertain age.

The Cook Islands are 15 islands located in the Southwest Pacific (between 8-23°S latitude and 156-167°W longitude). The total land area is about 200 km2. However, because its islands are widely scattered, the EEZ of the Cooks encompass an area about 2 million km2. The Cook Islands government exercises sovereignty and jurisdiction over its EEZ according to international law and convention as a member state under UNCLOS1. Accordingly, the Cook Islands government exercises full control over resources in its EEZ, including minerals on the seabed. Decision making on allocating licences for exploration and ultimate mineral recovery is by the Cook Islands government and will be set out in relevant statutes. Seabed minerals investigations within the EEZ of the Cook Islands and adjacent waters were first carried out by, USSR, US, and New Zealand research vessels in the late 1960 early 1970?s and indicated the presence of high concentrations of manganese nodules. This early work was followed by a number of Government funded surveys in and adjacent to the Cook Islands EEZ These surveys have identified a world class resource of manganese nodules within the Cook Islands EEZ (CI EEZ), containing significant
