The concept of sustainable development has been evolved into a working framework for sustainable manufacturing, in which the environmental requirements are introduced into product development at the design stage. This keynote paper is discussing a number of issues pertaining to the impact of manufacturing on the environment. The conflicting requirements of sustainable development, sustainable manufacturing (SM) and economical growth are presented in the light of successful case studies that were able to convert conflicts into opportunities. Integration of SM into the product life cycle is also presented. A number of concepts that are related to Ecoefficiency, e.g., inverse manufacturing, demanufacturing and re-manufacturing are also discussed. The paper underlines the fact that the positive impact of this new philosophy is equally applicable and beneficial to both; developed and developing countries. The paper concludes with an overview of Global trends in environmentally benign manufacturing (EBM); e.g., product-take back and emerging material and processing technologies. The state-of-the-art approach to Life Cycle Impact Assessment and integration of design for the environment DfE principles are demonstrated through some case study.

"An introduction to the metallurgical requirements of the Flin Flon concentrator reveals the magnitude of ore blending which is required in its operation of three flotation circuits. The resulting variability in flotation heads which has in-creased the separations complexity justified the development of an on-line analysis system.This paper provides a summary of the development and operation of that system. Particular attention is devoted to the problems encountered and where possible their solutions; as the requirements of accurate information and minimum downtime of the sampling system and x-ray analyzer are considered essential. The addition of a recess central computer has provided information in a more easily understood form and as well has allowed the start of automatic reagent control.An indication of the on-line analysis system's value to the concentrators' operation is provided by an examination of the plant in metallurgical data and reagent costs in previous years.The metallurgical plants of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting lie adjacent to the city of Flin Flon on the Manitoba-Saskatchewan boundary. Plant operations commenced in 1930 treating copper-zinc ore from the local mine. In recent years ore bodies near Flin Flon and in the Snow Lake area, about seventy-five miles east, have been brought into production.By the beginning of 1973 the number of producing mines had increased to nine; with all the ore being handled by the Flin Flon concentrator. "In the Bayer process, flocculants are introduced in the feed well to enhance the aggregation of red mud particles. To gain a better understanding of the flocculation process taking place in the feed well, shearinduced flocculation was achieved using concentric rotating cylinders (Couette system). Our previous work has shown the effect of the shear rate on the aggregate’s settling rate and on residual turbidity of the Bayer liquor. In this study, the data demonstrated that the aggregates at selected shear levels appear as a population with a widespread size distribution. By using an imagery apparatus, it was possible to measure the size, the shape, and the sedimentation velocity of the larger red mud aggregates. Marked differences were noticed in the characteristics of the aggregate populations obtained under various shear conditions. IntroductionIn the Bayer process, red mud particles are separated from the liquor in primary clarifiers and washing circuits under the action of synthetic polymers. The agitation in the feed pipe and in the feed well affects the flocculation since the aggregates are formed by the interaction between the red mud particles and the polymers. A minimum shear rate is needed to initiate the aggregation process of fine particles (Warren, 1975).Different systems have been used to study the effects of shear on the flocculation process (Tampo and Watanabe, 1979; Klimpel and Hogg, 1986; Scott et al., 1996; Biggs and Lant, 2000). The Couette flow system has been used in some studies on shear-flocculation (Oles, 1992; Farrow and Swift, 1996a, 1996b). The importance of the physical properties of the aggregates in determining the efficiency of the solid-liquid separation process within a given gravity thickener has been demonstrated (Farrow and Warren, 1989a)"

"A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MURRAY BROOK MINERAL DEPOSITDuring the mid-1950's intensive exploration activity in northern New Brunswick followed the discovery of the world class Brunswick base metal deposit. Using the prototypes of modern airborne geophysical and geochemical exploration techniques many mineralized areas in the Bathurst-Newcastle area were quickly identified. This base metal - silver camp is situated within the metavolcanic - metasidementary rocks of the Tetagouche Group which forms a roughly circular caldera-chaped voloanio complex of Ordivician age.One of the early results in the exploration history in the camp was the discovery of the Murray Brook Deposit by Kennco Explorations, (Canada) Limited. During routine ground checking of geophysical anomalies, most of which turned out to be graphitic schist, the discovery of some copper bearing float was made by the exploration team. This encouraged the company sufficiently to carry out a regional stream sampling program which lead to a large anomaly associated with a hematitic gossan. Diamond drilling of a weak Slingram anomaly over the gossan zone resulted in the discovery of massive sulphide lenses. This was followed in 1956-7 with an intensive drilling program. The result was the delineation of a potential ore body containing an estimated 23 million tons with an overall grade of 0.44% copper, 0.86% lead, 1.95% zinc, 25.73 g/tonne (0.91 oz/ton) silver, 0.28 g/tonne (0.01 oz/ton) gold. Within this package were higher grade zones of copper and lead-zinc mineralization approaching ore grades.A thick blanket of gossan was present and is reported to have caused the drillers considerable trouble as they attempted to penetrate it to get to the underlying sulphides. The gossan, consisting of iron oxides and silica fragments sits on top of the massive sulphides and attains a remarkable thickness of 45.5 meters (150'). Early work had suggested that the gossan was enriched in gold and silver. If this were the case and if the precious metal could be leached out with cyanide, then mining and recovering those values might be economic.With this in mind Northumberland Mines Limited optioned the property from Kennco in 1985. Preliminary leach tests indicated that indeed the gold in particular leached readily. Subsequent drilling of the gossan (using triple core barrel technology for better recovery of the easily ground core) indicated 1,536,363 tonnes (1,690,000 tons) with an average grade of 1.05 g/tonne (0.037 oz/ton) gold and 42.13 g/tonne"

The formation of copper chlorides in flue dust or deposits in heat recovery boiler of copper smelters or waste-fired boilers may lead to formation of corrosive partially molten deposits on walls and heat exchangers of the boilers. These deposits can contain various other metals, such as alkalis, Fe, Zn, Pb together with oxides and sulfates. In the present study, a thermodynamic model for copper-containing binary and ternary metal chloride systems within multicomponent CuCl-CuCl2-FeCl2-FeCl3- PbCl2-ZnCl2 system has been assessed and optimized based on own experimental phase equilibrium data, as well as literature data. The thermodynamic properties of the liquid phase was modelled using the quasichemical quadruplet model and a thermodynamic database was optimized to predict all available experimental data within the experimental error limits. The thermodynamic database allows for more accurate predictions of potential corrosion-related issues in various heat recovery boilers and waste-fired boilers due to formation of copper chlorides. INTRODUCTION In the copper flash smelting, flue dust can cause severe problems in the gas train, used for separating dust from the SO2-rich off gas, by forming corroding accretions on the walls of the heat recovery boiler. Formation of dust build-ups in the boiler need to be cleaned regularly and potential corrosion damage checked, requiring costly and unscheduled shutdowns of the flash smelting process. Compounds of copper and zinc among other elements having high vapour pressures may volatilize during the smelting of the copper concentrate, forming dust when the process gas cools down. Also, particles of solid or liquid iron oxides originating from the ore get transported with process gas to the heat recovery boiler as a result of entrainment in the flue gas (Miettinen, 2008) The dust deposit build-ups on the boiler walls are formed partly by direct impact of particles and partly by vapour condensation on the boiler walls. The initial deposition takes place by the condensation of vapours that contain zinc, lead, arsenic and other metals having high vapour pressures. Also, low melting point eutectic components of alkali salts such as chlorides and sulphates can act as sticky cohesive particles attaching to the boiler walls. The fine particles landing on the surface of the porous dust deposit layer react in the SO2-rich atmosphere of the boiler to sulphates. The process gas within the boiler contains SO2, O2, SO3, H2O and N2 that diffuse into the porous accretions to form a stagnant gas layer within the dust deposit structure. The composition of this gas layer may differ greatly from the composition of the process gas that is flowing on the surface of the accretion layer. Locally HCl and H2SO4 are formed and even a reducing atmosphere may exist within the dust deposit layer, allowing new reactions to take place. The local micro-atmosphere may enable metal sulphates to be reduced to secondary sulphides and even metallic components. Within the accretion layer, components may be formed that would not be stable in the gas atmosphere inside the boiler (Miettinen, 2008). This may be the mechanism by which for instance chlorides of Cu, Fe and Zn are formed within the deposit layer.

"The Las Cristinas deposit in Venezuela contains reserves of 12.8 million ounces of gold at a grade of 1.20 g/t (Crystallex, 2004). The deposit comprises fully oxidized saprolite (SAPO) overlying a layer of sulphide-enriched saprolite (SAPS) which lies above carbonateleached bedrock (CLB) and carbonate stable or un-leached bedrock (CSB). Gold occurs at about the same concentration in all lithological groups. The bedrock units contain minor amounts of copper (about 0.1%) as chalcopyrite, while SAPO contains virtually no copper which has been leached and deposited in the SAPS zone.A previous owner began investigation of the Las Cristinas deposit in 1991. Over the next seven years, the company drilled 1,174 holes with a total length of 159 km, conducted extensive metallurgical testwork, including pilot plant operations, and completed feasibility studies. Construction was started in 1997 and again in 1999, however, on each occasion was suspended.Crystallex has been producing gold inVenezuela since the early 1990s. In 1997, Crystallex acquired Inversora Mael which had held two of the claims to the Las Cristinas concessions since 1986. In September 2002, Crystallex entered into a definitive agreement with the Corporación Venezolana de Guayana (CVG) to develop the Las Cristinas deposit.An extensive program of studies and testwork was started in late 2002 to determine an optimum development plan for Las Cristinas. Mine Development Associates, SNC–Lavalin Engineers and Constructors, SGS Lakefield Research Limited, J.R. Goode and Associates, and A. Laplante at McGill University acted as the main contractors.Because of the potential value of by-product copper, earlier flowsheets used carbon-inleach for SAPO, but processed all other ore types by flotation to produce a gold-copper concentrate with cyanide leaching of cleaner tailings to maximize gold recovery. Cyanide recovery was necessitated by the high copper content of the leach feed. Initial studies of available data by Crystallex revealed that direct leaching of all ore types would provide about 11% more gold recovery than the previously selected flotation route with reduced capital and operating costs.Bench and pilot-scale studies have confirmed that a SAG-ball mill-gravity-CIL route is very effective for all ore types and will give about 89% gold recovery. This paper describes the testwork conducted in 2003, discusses a 20,000 t/d plant design, and presents economic data."

In some parts of the world explosions in mines are more commonplace events. Even in the more developed nations explosions have occurred in recent times. In some cases these mines have significantly lowered their lost time injury frequency rates and as such considered themselves to be ?safe? operations. The consequence of these explosions has been devastating. It is not just the loss of those underground, but also to the families that have lost people in them and the broader community that has lost friends, income, business opportunities, and in many cases support and sponsorships. It begs so many questions, ?What went wrong??; ?Why were the circumstances not foreseen??; ?What could have been done to prevent it??; ?How is it that no one stopped it, reported it, fixed it etc.??. Being held accountable for negligence, should not be overlooked, however this may not aid the processes required to find all the answers. If the nature of explosions is understood, the circumstances and tools to prevent them are readily available then the occurrence and reoccurrence are due to weaknesses or inadequacies of the systems of work or in the implementation of them. This paper restates the fundamentals of gas explosions, examines the options to control the underground environment through ventilation, gas management and monitoring, education and training. Case studies have been used to examine systematic failures in ventilation management. In some of these cases it is not so much, the system that had been developed, but the interpretation and implementation of the system that resulted in the failure and subsequent loss.

Relative to slender pillars, larger size pillars exhibit improved strata control. Fly ash, though traditionally treated as a waste product, is emerging as an alternate engineering material. This paper deals with the development of a strong fly ash composite material with additives. The geotechnical properties of this fly ash composite were determined and used to trap model core pillars, which resemble squat pillars. The trapped samples were tested under uni-axial loading in the laboratory and the results showed higher load-bearing capacity of the model core pillars. The reinforced fly ash composites provide lateral confinement and exhibit improved post- failure behaviour of the model cores.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Afton Mines property is located 180 air miles east-northeast of Vancouver and nine miles west of Kamloops, a city of 60,000 people in south central British Columbia. The deposit is located adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway at an elevation of 2,231 feet above sea level.Interest in the property dates back to 1898, when a 330 foot shaft was sunk on the Pothook claim immediately south of the existing operations. Since that time many companies and individuals have investigated the possibilities of the area but it was not until 1972 that Afton Mines Ltd. located a significant zone of copper mineralization. The feasibility study was completed in the period 1974-1975, by Teck Corporation Ltd., who control Afton through 50% direct ownership and 65% ownership of Isa Mines, who own a further 23%. Construction began in March, 1976. Ore production started in August, 1977, and the first ore was fed to the mill on December 8. This was the third mine to be brought into operation by Teck since 1975, the others being Newfoundland Zinc and Niobec.The orebody is a porphyry copper deposit which has undergone supergene alteration. It is 1,700 feet long in a west-northwest by east-southeast direction, 300 feet wide and dips at 55° to the south. The mineralization in the supergene zone, which accounts for two-thirds of the known deposit, is rather unusual in that the copper is present primarily as native copper and chalcocite. The grade is one percent with the distribution: 70% native, 25% chalcocite, and 5% chalcopyrite with bornite, covellite, and cuprite."

"This paper describes a sudden spill of waste rock used for backfilling from a waste pass at an underground mine in Canada, thus causing a major failure/accident. The mine operator immediately launched a detailed investigation to understand the causes of this accident and develop procedures to prevent any recurrence of such events in the future. The authors from McGill University were invited to collaborate with the engineers at the mine to examine this accident. The events leading to the accident were studied, appropriate measurements were taken and samples of the waste material were collected for further testing and analysis.The field visit and the interview of the witnesses allowed the detailed documentation of the events. The sequence of events related to the incident, along with the experimental results obtained in the course of the investigation, are presented. The waste material was characterized in the laboratory with regard to its behaviour in the presence of water. This information is discussed and the failure mechanism involved in the accident is identified. Finally, the full recommendations as well as the immediate operational measures implemented by the mine to prevent the future occurrence of such events are presented and discussed."

"The selective recovery of gold and silver from solutions containing other metals such as copper is possible using AuRIX®100 resin in conjunction with the Gekko Resin Column. Selectivity is driven by controlling the solution pH, which enables activities such as loading copper, gold and silver and then selectively stripping copper before gold and silver. Alternatively gold and silver can be loaded and the copper left in solution. The selective loading of gold while reducing the silver loading has also been demonstrated opening the possibility of producing high grade gold doré from high grade silver pregnant leach solutions. This paper reviews the AuRIX®100 resin and Gekko Resin Column Technologies, discusses the uses of AuRIX®100 in the recovery of gold and silver and the chemistry relating to several projects for which AuRIX®100 is being tested.INTRODUCTIONGekko SystemsGekko Systems specializes in the design, development and distribution of innovative mineral processing equipment and systems with a particular focus on gravity separation for the gold and diamond industries. The company, which has been around since 1996, has five main products: the InLine Pressure Jig, the InLine Spinner, the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR), Gekko Resin Column and Modular Systems.The InLine Leach Reactor is an intensive cyanidation reactor that uses high cyanide (0.5 – 2 % NaCN) and high oxidant (20 ppm dissolved oxygen as O2 or hydrogen peroxide) to dissolve gold from medium and high-grade gravity or flotation concentrates. The ILR, which typically replaces a shaking table in the gold room, is available in both batch and continuous models. There are 42 installations worldwide. By replacing a shaking table with an ILR, the overall gravity and plant recoveries can be increased significantly. "A number of successful proof-of-concept projects have been carried out to replace conventional power application, such as diesel and rechargeable batteries, in underground mine vehicles. This has led to the development and testing of the world’s first fuel cell production vehicle, a mine locomotive. A fuel cell loader is being built and tested.This paper provides an insight into other projects that are being carried out. Some are related to further underground applications, and some to further research, such as refueling options, power plant durability, and vehicle automation.Also outlined is an evaluation of the overall mining applications and advantages this technology can bring to underground mining, including the facilitation of automation and tele-remote operation."

In a radio frequency and optoelectoronic device packaging, Gold-Tin (Au-20 wt% Sn eutectic) solder is used widely due to the excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, high strength, and negligible creep characteristic under repetitive thermal cycling. With the recent lead-free movement, Gold-Tin solder is recognized as an alternative material for high temperature Lead-Tin solder. Generally, Gold-Tin solder is supplied in the forms such as ribbons, pellets, and ring frames. However, these forms must be set-up accurately on the joint area to press chips in bonding, therefore, it is difficult for these forms to satisfy the recent requirements for the down sizing in the connection areas. On the other hand, Au-20 wt% Sn solder paste can be applied flexibly to various supplying methods, such as printing, dispensing system and pin transcript. These methods also make it possible to reduce the production cost. However, in the case of using the solder paste, the void issue is one of the most undesirable problems. The void causes the degradation of the characteristics such as the bond strength, electrical characteristic and thermal conductivity. We have been intensifying the development of the void free paste, and have achieved void reduction by optimizing the powder size, the flux composition and the reflow condition.

Il s?agira d?une des premières applications du forage ITH à cette pression sous terre. Cet article traitera des gains anticipés et montrera certains résultats préliminaires. Il sera aussi question du bras manipulateur utilisé pour manipuler les tiges de forage. Abstract The Goldex Mine will start production in the second quarter of 2008. In order to achieve a production of 6960 tpd, ITH drilling at 400 psi (28 bar) was selected. ITH drilling at this pressure will be one of the first underground applications. This paper will discuss the anticipated gains and show some preliminary results. The use of the rod handler will also be discussed.

"Geographic information systems (GIS) provide an efficient means for the recording, manipulation, revision, display and analysis of spatially referenced data. GIS are widely used at the exploration stage of mine development, and are increasingly used for reclamation planning. The ability of a GIS to perform spatial searches and query spatially referenced data make it a powerful tool for use at all stages of mine development. As the amount of data available for analysis increases, so does the power and flexibility of GIS as a planning tool.Starting from the exploration database, this paper describes how a GIS can be used for the development of mining plans based on topography, geology and mineralization information stored in a relational database. Planning decisions approaching the optimal can then be made for a wide range of parameters, including stockpile and waste dump locations, the location of potentially acid generating and neutralizing material for dump design, profitable and risk-controlled mine extraction sequencing, and haul road locations. This is made possible by the overlay and buffer analysis capabilities of a GIS which are explored and exploited to produce a continuous mine production planning program, as well as site remediation and reclamation using a successful case study. IntroductionGeographic information systems (GIS) are a relatively new tool in the mining industry. Although they have existed for a number of years, the potential of GIS for mine management and planning is only beginning to be investigated and exploited. The unique spatial capabilities of GIS make them particularly wellsuited for use in mining, where spatial information is fundamental to the processes of mineral exploration, mine development, and environmental reclamation. A number of potential applications for GIS in the mining industry have been identified, and they are widely used for exploration and reclamation. The use of a GIS as a platform for the development of mine planning routines and software remains an interesting, but as of yet unexplored, application of this technology."

"The mechanization of mining operations in underground coal mines has led to faster cutting rates of coalfaces with increased levels of emission of gaseous and particulate contaminants in the workings. Consequently, the fresh air streams from the main ventilation systems reaching distant workings are often insufficient, ineffective or inadequate and have to be supplemented by auxiliary ventilation systems to create and maintain the required working environments underground. The efficiencies of auxiliary ventilation systems are largely affected by drivers of the system such as the type and capacity of the fan; the type, length, diameter and condition of the ventilation ducting and the distance from the discharge end of the intake ducting to the face. Traditionally, single point measurements of methane gas concentrations using either flame safety lamps or hand-held measuring instruments have been used to assess how safe underground coal workings were. Unfortunately, such occasional measurements of methane gas concentrations do not give an accurate picture of the real gas concentration in the working as they are often taken from the easily accessible locations in working. Continuous monitoring of the methane gas concentration in development headings enables a better assessment of the environmental conditions prevailing there. All variations in the methane concentrations are more easily captured on a continuous monitoring basis than by instantaneous single point measurements. The approach adopted in this work was to continuously monitor the concentration of methane very close to the face and about 60 m outbye in development headings, observe the types of auxiliary ventilation equipment and their sizes being used in the working as well as noting the lengths from the discharge ends of the forcing and exhaust ductings to the face.In this paper, empirical methods are used to calculate the mean efficiencies of the auxiliary ventilation systems in selected development headings in coal mines in North America. This enables the assessment of the effectiveness of the auxiliary ventilation systems and the identification of the system drivers in them. The results show that the efficiencies of the forcing systems ranged from 17.02% to 96.81% while the efficiencies of the overall systems varied from 6.04% to 54.16%. The distance from the discharge end of the intake ducting to the face appeared to be the strongest driver in the performance of the auxiliary ventilation systems studied. It was also noted that when the discharge end of the intake ducting to the face does not exceed 7 m, there were faster purging rates of methane at the face and the efficiencies of the overall auxiliary ventilation system were greater than 50%. These findings are very important in underground coal mining in North America as they will assist to avert calamities, such as the Westray coal mine disaster in 1992 which resulted from the explosion of methane gas, by identifying which components of the ventilation system need special attention to create safe working conditions underground."

Most large skarn deposits are zoned in both space and time relative to associated intrusions. Zonation occurs on scales from kilometers to micrometers, and re?ects in?ltrative ?uid ?ow, wall rock reaction, temperature variations, and ?uid mixing. The most spectacular examples of skarn zonationusually occur at the skarn-marble contact, where transitions between monomineralic bands can be knifesharp. Other small-scale examples occur in zoned veins and individual mineral crystals. Although,visually striking and scienti?cally interesting, in mineral exploration these small-scale variations areless useful than deposit- or district-scale zonation. In most skarn systems there is a general zonationpattern of proximal garnet, distal pyroxene, and vesuvianite (or a pyroxenoid such as wollastonite, bustamite, or rhodonite) at the marble front. As well, individual skarn minerals may display systematic color or compositional variations within the larger zonation pattern. Such patterns are reviewed for 14well-studied examples of Cu, W, Sn, Au, and Zn-Pb skarns. In addition, many deposits have endoskarnor other alteration of the associated intrusion, and recrystallization or other subtle changes have occurred in the surrounding wall rocks. Copper skarns, such as Mines Gaspé in Quebec and Big Gos-san in Irian Jaya, have high ratios of garnet:pyroxene and are zoned outward from the intrusion, to gar-net, to pyroxene, to massive-sul?de replacement and vein deposits. Garnets in Cu skarn are Fe-rich and change from dark red-brown near the intrusive contact to paler brown, green, or yellow in distal loca-tions. Pyroxenes in Cu skarns are pale and diopsidic near the intrusion, and become darker and more Fe- and Mn-rich away from the intrusion. Tungsten skarns, such as Salau and Costabonne in France and Pine Creek and Garnet Dike in California, have intermediate ratios of garnet: pyroxene, are more extensive vertically and along strike than perpendicular to the intrusive contact, and have zonation pat-terns commonly complicated by overprinting of metamorphic lithologies. In W skarns, garnet is com-monly subcalcic and the pyroxene is Fe-rich, re?ecting particularly reducing wall rocks or great depth of formation. Tin skarns, such as Dachang in China and Moina in Australia, also can have subcalcicgarnet and Fe-rich pyroxene, but this reduced mineral assemblage typically is due to an association with reduced S-type granites. Tin skarns differ from most other skarn types in having a late greisens stage that may replace earlier Sn-bearing calc-silicate minerals, thus liberating Sn to form cassiterite.Many high-grade Au skarns, such as Hedley in British Columbia and Fortitude in Nevada, have low ratios of garnet: pyroxene and are associated both with reduced plutons and reduced wall rocks. Gold-rich zones occur in Fe-rich, pyroxene-dominant, distal skarn. Zn-Pb skarns, such as the Yeonhwa-Ulchin district in Korea and Groundhog in New Mexico, have low ratios of garnet: pyroxene and generally form distal to associated intrusions. These skarns also are zoned from proximal garnet to distal pyroxene and pyroxenoid (bustamite-rhodonite), with signi?cant zones of massive sul?des within and beyond skarn. Manganese enrichment of most mineral phases, particularly pyroxene, is characteristic of distal zones. Fundamental controls on skarn zonation include temperature, depth of formation, composition and oxidation state of associated plutons and wall rocks, and tectonic setting. Most W skarns form at relatively great depth, 5 km to 20 km, with extensive high-temperature metamorphic and meta-somatic mineral assemblages. In contrast, most other skarn types are relatively shallow, <10 km and mostly <5 km, with limited, lower temperature metamorphic aureoles. Differences in oxidation state correlate well with different skarn zonation patterns, particularly garnet: pyroxene ratios and compositions, and can be used in both classi?cation of and exploration for skarn deposits

"Gold cyanidation rates are known to be limited by the rate of oxygen dissolution in the cyanidation tanks. The effect of solids loading on the oxygen dissolution rates is not obvious and the results of previous studies are ambiguous. The present paper presents an analysis of oxygen dissolution rates using a ""spent"" commercial gold slurry diluted to various levels of solids loading. It was found, in an 170 litre stirred tank reactor using an inverted cone sparger, that under certain high loading conditions, there was a decrease of as much as 50 %, i.e., there was a halving of the rate of oxygen dissolution as compared to that in clean water. In particular, it was observed that, due to gas flooding of the impeller, there was a drop in kLa even with an increase of gas velocity. Gas holdup reached a maximum value of only 1.7 %. The total power consumption was between 0.06- 0 .10 kw/m3 within the range of gas velocity before flooding occurred. The decrease in oxygen dissolution rate with increased solids loadings is believed to be mainly due to the increase in the apparent viscosity which reduced the turbulence and shearing effect and resulted in larger bubbles and hence reduced the reaction area a. This paper presents the experiences and views of women involved in the mining industry as determined from a questionnaire that was circulated across the Canadian mining industry. Globally, there have been significant studies done to understand the historic and global variety of women?s participation in this industry1. The reason for focusing on women?s experiences here in Canada is because women?s percentage representation at 14.4% in the mineral industry workforce falls below the overall labour force average of 47.4%2. Notably, a recent article in the Globe and Mail newspaper points out that adequate representation of women in leading of organizations is more of a matter of competitiveness and innovation rather than purely a ?women?s issue?3. This paper will provide some insight into the reasons why women join and stay in the mining industry and shed some light into the reasons for the overall low representation in this sector. The authors believe, as stated in a study from the London Business School, that a gender-balanced workforce is one way of providing the best results in areas that drive innovation4. Women represent a key stakeholder group that can help enhance the mining industry?s sustainability through innovation. The women who responded to the questionnaire represent many different areas within the mining industry, including a broad range of roles in industry, government, academia and in the supplies and services sector. The paper is intended to raise awareness about issues that women encounter that contribute or detract from career satisfaction in the mining industry. The survey provides an overall understanding of why women pursue or work in mining, and why women either remain or choose to leave it. The advantages and disadvantages experienced by women are highlighted, along with a summary of the possible initiatives that could be undertaken by employers as opportunities to improve the attraction of the mining industry for career minded women. As well, the survey provides a summary of the top ten features that are already in place at various organizations and community groups that have been identified as key for supporting and encouraging women to join and remain in the industry. Not surprisingly, the survey identifies that one of the key ingredients for retention of women in mining is the provision of mentors and sponsors. Another key aspect for retention is the provision of progressive employment policies that address the need for a degree of flexibility in work hours and a culture of balance between work and personal life demands. The survey and results are portrayed only from a female perspective since it is largely women?s perceptions that will inevitably be transmitted to others who plan on entering the field.
