"HistoricalBARYTES was mined in Nova Scotia as early as 1874 from a deposit at Five Islands, on the north shore of Minas Basin. The first record of the presence of the mineral at the Walton site appears in a report by Selwyn in l893, who states: ""Barytes in considerable quantity occurs in veins in lime-stones at Walton and Pembroke"". The exact site of the present workings was marked •on a map published by Fletcher in 1905.The economic •possibilities of this deposit, however, were not recognized until 1940, at which time we were at war with Germany, who up to that time had supplied 50 per cent of the world's requirements.At that time the Nova Scotia Department of Mines, recognizing the need for certain strategic minerals, induced Canadian Industrial Minerals, Limited, to send prospectors into 'the area to look for manganese. No manganese deposits were found, but a deposit of barytes was directed to their attention, and exploration and development work on the occurrence was proceeded with.IntroductionThe south shore of Minas Basin between the Avon river at Windsor and the Stewiacke river at Maitland has long been known as a potential source of mineral wealth. It had attracted the attention of mineralogists and in the past had produced considerable tonnages of manganese ore and gypsum. All mineral processing facilities that use girth gear driven mills need to inspect the gear teeth on a routine basis, whether it is every six months or every three years. The inspection frequency depends upon gear tooth condition, and the objective is to ensure operational integrity of the gear teeth. Conventional methods such as magnetic particle testing, visual inspection, or dye penetrant examinations rely heavily on interpretation. At best, these techniques can determine whether a defect exists, but are unable to provide information on defect severity. This paper describes the use of combined Eddy Current Array (ECA) and Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM) to provide a complete survey of all surface breaking indications on the whole gear tooth depth. This method accurately determines the size, length and depth of any cracks found on the surface.

In order elucidate the mechanism for poorer fatigue properties of 7000 series aluminum alloys than those of 2000 series alloys, the effect of the test environment on the fatigue crack growth of the two series alloys was investigated, considering the relationship to hydrogen embrittlement. Two 7075-type and four 2024-type alloys were T6-tempered and T4-tempered respectively, and subjected to fatigue crack growth tests in moist and dry environments. When tested in moist air, fraction of intergranular crack path was higher in the 7075-type alloy with coarse equi-axed grains than in the 2024-type alloy with similar microstructure. This was in accord with the larger crack growth rate in the 7075-type alloy. Both the intergranular crack path fraction and the crack growth rate were decreased by changing the environment to the flow of nitrogen gas. Thus, the large fatigue crack growth rate of the 7075-type alloy is attributable to hydrogen embrittlement.

"IntroductionThe Bienfait Mine is operated by Bienfait Coal Company Ltd., one of the Luscar Limited group of companies. Situated 5 km southeast of the town of Bienfait, Saskatchewan, it can produce 2.0 million tonnes of lignite annually in addition to 158,000 tonnes of char from a carbonization plant located on the property. Geology The economically mineable coal seams of the Estevan area are found in the Ravenscrag Formation. The lignite-bearing sands, silts and clays were deposited in Early Tertiary age, in an inland sea centred in the Williston Basin of North Dakota. The top of the Ravenscrag is an erosional surface, overlain by Tertiary or Quarternary sands and gravels or glacial till. The regional structure is a gently plunging syncline which dips to the southeast at about 0.3 degrees. There are minor undulations in the Bienfait area which are due to differential subsidence during deposition. Sporadic faulting is probably a result of glacial pressures, and preglacial and glacial channels are responsible for washout zones and the abrupt irregular subcrop found in the area. There are two economic coal seams in the Bienfait area, an uppe; seam locally known as the Roche Percee, and a lower seam, the Estevan. Both seams have been extensively mined since lignite mining began in the area in the late 1800s. The Roche Percee remains only in a small portion of the Bienfait Mine and comprises a very minor portion of the reserves. It averages 1.74 m thick under 8.1 m of overburden. The till rests on top of the Roche Percee and due to weathering the seam is generally of poorer quality. The Estevan seam comprises the majority of reserves at Bienfait. The main seam which is being worked on consists of an upper bench averaging 2.75 m, a carbonaceous parting of 0.21 m, and a lower bench of 0.92 m. Overburden depth above this seam varies from 21.0 m to 38.0 m."

"Concentrate drying at the Sullivan Concentrator goes back to 1937 when the original coal-fired dryer was put into operation. This was a second hand 8' dia. x 56' long Struthers-Wells rotary dryer that came from the phosphate plant in Warfield, B.C.In 1962, replacement of the old dryer was seriously considered. The shell and the auxiliary drive mechanism were badly worn and needed replacing. In April 1963, the new 8' dia. x 65' long fuel oil-fired Struthers-Wells dryer went in operation at an installed cost of $174,000.In 1965, it was apparent that a major rebuilding of the dust collecting system would have to be done. A study was carried out and a Ducon Dynamic Gas Scrubber was installed. The system went in operation in November 1966 and has fully met expectations.In the same year, the zinc dryer was converted from fuel oil to natural gas. "The Kemess porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit occurs in the Intermontane Belt of north-central British Columbia. The deposit is in andesitic to basaltic flows and tuffs which may be correlated with the Savage Mountain Formation of the Upper Triassic Takla Group. Most known chalcopyrite and molybdenite is associated closely with a 500-m-diameter zone of intense quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration. A zone of supergene enrichment, up to 30 m thick, underlies a leached capping about 20 m thick. The age of mineralization and the surrounding granodiorite and quartz monzonite pluton is Early Jurassic. K-Ar and Rb-Sr analyses indicate that the mineralization and alteration is slightly younger (l82±6 Ma) than the granitic intrusion (KAr: about 205±6 Ma; Rb-Sr: 190±4 Ma). The low 87Sr/J6Sr initial ratio for the granodiorite is typical of plutons in the Intermontane Belt.IntroductionKemess is a medium to small porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit with significant gold and silver values (Pilcher and McDougall, 1976). This paper describes the lithologies and alteration at this property; geochronology by Rb-Sr and K-Ar methods defines the ages of mineralization and surrounding plutons to be Early Jurassic.The property, located in the Thutade Lake area of northcentral British Columbia (NTS Map 94E; lat. 57°04'N; long. 126°44'W), is about 425 km northwest of Prince George (Fig. 1). Closest road access is 35 km southeast of Kemess. Final access must be by float plane or helicopter. The British Columbia Railway right of way passes 70 km to the southwest of theproperty.A prominent gossan zone at Kemess was staked in 1967 by Kennco Explorations (Western) Ltd. following detection of geochemical anomalies during stream sampling the previous year. During 1968, 1969and 1971, Kennco completed 232 m of X-ray diamond drilling, conducted geological mapping and carried out geochemical sampling of silts and soils (Stevenson, 1969; B.C. Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, G.E .M., 1969 and 1971). Getty Mines Ltd. optioned Kemess in 1975and 1976. They remapped the area and diamond drilled 12 BQ and NQ holes, totalling 2065 m (B.C. Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, Expl. B.C., 1975)."

Despite anecdotal evidence to the contrary, the mining industry is not in decline. Rather, the world?s largest mining companies are among the most consistently profitable companies in any industry. In many cases, profitable mining companies have been built around a few large scale, long life mines. These criteria for success ? size and long life ? have led to the current preference for deposits that can be exploited using open pit methods. However, developments in the science of block caving have resulted in this mining method achieving costs and productivities that are competitive with the largest open pits, while achieving widespread applicability. One implication of the low costs and widespread applicability of block caving is that some current open pits are possibly too deep.

The Caetité-Brazil uranium facilities produce about 340 t/y of uranium from an ore averaging 0,25 U %. The process steps are ore crushing, heap leaching with sulfuric acid, U separation and purification by solvent extraction with tertiary amine followed by stripping with sodium chloride solution and precipitation as ammonium diuranate that is dryed. A change in the milling process is being evaluated to increase the production and the uranium recovery. Heap leaching will be changed to conventional tank agitated leaching of the ?590 ground ore slurry in sulfuric acid medium. The replacement of the stripping reagent is also being considered.

Description of the Springhill Coal Field The Springhill coal basin, which lies in the approximate centre of Cumberland county, Nova Scotia, is of Carboniferous age, and forms a syncline plunging to the westward at an angle of 32° at the outcrop but gradually flattening to the dip. It contains several workable seams of varying thicknesses, a generalized section of the measures in descending order from the surface being: [] The 1,114 feet of strata is composed of shales and sandstones, and all of the coal seams mentioned, with the exception of No. 4 and No. 5, have been mined commercially. The coal is said to be the best steam and domestic coal in the Province of Nova Scotia.

Alberta contains over 400 billion barrels of viscous crude oil in fractured carbonates but there is no viable extraction technology as yet. Petroleum geomechanics has become a vital part of the assessment of such hydrocarbon reserves, especially for naturally fractured cases, which are particularly challenging in terms of accurate recovery prediction because of joint fabric complexity and lithological heterogeneity. As a result of interconnected fractures, transport properties of fractures (mostly permeability issues rather than thermal effects) are affected by production and injection activities that change the pore pressures, temperatures, saturations, and effective stresses. Enhanced oil recovery methods involving massive amounts of fluid injection (hot or cold) at high pressure (pinj) may be used to mobilize and produce the oil; therefore, deeper understanding of the fractured systems is desirable. Pressure and temperature variations in a fractured reservoir change the in situ stresses in the reservoir and surrounding rocks; this affects fracture apertures, radically changing the bulk flow properties because flux rate is highly sensitive to aperture. Hence, coupled pressure, temperature and effective stress changes must be considered for fractured reservoirs under a thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupling approach.A hybrid FDM/DDM coupled method is presented to couple pore pressure and stress around a fracture in an impermeable matrix block. Deformation and stresses are calculated in each time step and then fracture permeability, which is the most sensitive petrophysical parameter in fractured reservoirs, is updated based on the fracture aperture variation. This model is then verified with UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code) which uses a discrete approach to cope with fractured rock mass behavior.

"The fire resistance of several mine conveyor belts is evaluated using a new belt-flammability apparatus developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The test apparatus, experimental details and a calculated flammability index (FI) are described.The FI values are useful for ranking the fir e resistance of mine conveyor belts. Values are determined using parameters readily measured with thermocouples, high-temperature flow probes and a methane-oxygen torch, all of which are components of the Bureau's new test apparatus. The FI varies directly with the flame-spread rate and the rate of heat release during burning and varies inversely with the critical (minimum) ignitor energy output.The fire-resistance ranking of nine different belt types using this moderately scaled apparatus is compared with available full-scale data on belt fires. This comparison shows that the ranking based on the FI is consistent with the full-scale data.IntroductionFull-scale fire hazard evaluations of mine conveyor belts are not easily related to the properties usually measured in small-scale flammability tests. The inadequacy of small-scale belt fire tests has been demonstrated in works by Mitchell, Warner and Reinke.Mitchell and Warner showed that certain neoprene (NP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) belts, which had been approved by the Code of Federal Regulations 30 CFR 18.65, were nevertheless capable of propagating flame over their entire length when full-scale fire conditions were simulated. Comparable results were also observed by Reinke at the Tremonia experimental mine in Dortmund, West Germany, where all belts burned in full-scale tests even though they passed the small-scale tests. Only by reducing the severity of the full-scale test could these fire-resistant belts be grouped on a pass-fail basis."

"Four deep-seated rockslide systems were investigated and are under surveillance by TIWAG (Tyrolean hydro-electric Company) since the mid-1960s after impoundment of Gepatsch reservoir began. These rockslide systems consist of several individual sliding masses (slabs) which show variable activity from zero to a few centimetres per year. The focus in this paper will be on the findings for the transient deformation behaviour of the Hochmais slab which is part of the “Hochmais-Atemkopf” rockslide system.The rock mass has slid over moraine deposits in the last post-glacial period and was in equilibrium (or slow to extremely slow moving, respectively) until the filling of the reservoir began. During the initial reservoir filling in summer 1964 considerable movements had been observed over a length of 1000 m accompanied with an activation of the Hochmais slab. Geological investigations, additional surface and subsurface measurement showed that the sliding mass is characterized by an en bloc movement and the deformation accumulates within a several metre thick shear zone located within the moraine. In contrast to the deformation characteristics for the first impoundment process (1964 – 1966) where the magnitude of deformation occurred during impoundment, the maximum amount of deformation since 1967 occurs during the drawdown of the reservoir. Based on long term measurement it can be shown that the magnitude of deformations per year correlates with the minimum storage level in the reservoir. Other external influences such as precipitation and snowmelt have no observable impact on the deformation characteristic of the landslide. On the basis of long-term data series it was possible to determine the factors of influence and to elaborate a conceptual mechanical model which describes the transient deformation behaviour of the Hochmais slab induced by the drawdown of the reservoir. The mechanical model considers the reduction of uplift forces in the highly fractured and permeable rock slab during drawdown as well as increasing seepage forces in the less permeable moraine material."

"To reduce concentrate dewatering and drying costs, the Concentrator Division at Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc. investigated available filtration technologies. Numerous methods were explored, including: drum, disk, belt, pressure, hyperbaric, and ceramic media filtration. An economic evaluation of the individual filtration technologies indicated the advantages of ceramic media filtration for Morenci concentrates. This paper discusses the technological development culminating in the first full scale application of ceramic media disk filters in North America. Low moisture contents are obtained at high production rates and greatly reduced operating costs.INTRODUCTIONPhelps Dodge commissioned the Morenci Concentrator Filter Plant in 1942 with four 8'6"" Dorr-Oliver cloth disk filters. That year, the filter plant processed 265,537 tons of concentrate grading 20.5% Cu. The filter cake production averaged 9.3% moisture. In 1944, the Extension Filter Plant commenced operation with three additional 8'6"" Dorr-Oliver cloth disk filters. This coincided with the expansion of the concentrator. Production that year totaled 451,567 tons of concentrate grading 23.8% Cu. Moisture averaged 9.4%.Through the years additional filter units have been added in response to increased concentrate production. An Eimco drum filter was installed on the extension side and an additional Dorr-Oliver disk filter was installed on the original side in the 1950's. In 1961, two 8'6"" Peterson disk filters were installed, one on each side to replace two worn-out DorrOlivers. The installation of four 10xl2 foot Peterson drum filters was completed in 1974, coinciding with the Metcalf Concentrator startup. An Eimco belt filter was installed later.The greatest change to concentrate dewatering at Morenci occurred in 1963 with the addition of a 10x60 foot rotary gas fired dryer. The installation also included a number of conveyors to deliver filter cake from both plants to and from the dryers. Other ancillary systems included dust scrubbers and their slurry pumps. The commencement of drying was undertaken due to the rapid increase in cake moisture as a result of the LPF process and the recycling of acid plant scrubber dust slurry from the smelter. In 1972, a second dryer system was installed to increase capacity."

An advanced Flash Furnace feed system is the key to improving furnace performance. Clyde-WorleyParsons has developed a revolutionary pulseless pneumatic injection feed system technology, capable of delivering a range of benefits to operators of Flash Furnaces. The solution was created by combining the pneumatic conveying and injection knowledge, expertise and technology of Clyde Materials Handling with WorleyParsons' flash furnace process and operating experience. Optimal furnace burner performance requires the feed material to be presented to the burner as a stable, pulseless and accurately controlled flow, distributed evenly around the burner tip circumference. These simple requirements appear obvious, but are extremely difficult to satisfy in industrial environments and are not achieved by conventional feed systems. Our analysis of existing operating furnaces has identified the link between pulses in concentrate feed rate caused by conventional drag chain conveyors and rapid fluctuations measured in the furnace pressure. These fluctuations occur at a timescale close to the reaction shaft residence time and lead to unwanted instability in the primary furnace reaction zone - the flame. Through the use of the solution created by Clyde-WorleyParsons, it is predicted that the much more accurate control of feed rates achieved can lead to substantial improvements in furnace output, increased oxygen efficiency and better control of the composition of furnace liquids, such as matte, blister or slag. All these improvements lead to significant increases in smelter output and efficiency, and deliver high economic value compared to the cost of the feed system. Clyde-WorleyParsons' solutions can be deployed on greenfield sites or retrofitted, and therefore, have the capability to improve feed control at both new and existing smelters. This paper will discuss the field test work undertaken to date, the impact of findings and the ongoing analysis of linkages between instabilities in the various components of conventional feed systems and furnace pressure stability.

"The wet grinding of asbestos has attracted the attention of engineers for many years as a means of improving fibre liberation from the ore. Today, added impetus for wet grinding has resulted from a need to minimize worker exposure to asbestos dust in conventional dry mills using air, as well as a need to provide a cleaner, technically superior fibre for use by product manufacturers. However , high viscosities of asbestos slurries create transport and grinding difficulties which have been a factor impeding use of a wet grinding process.Laboratory evaluation of reagents to reduce viscosities of asbestos slurries found that one reagent, XFS-4272.00, reduced the viscosity of a 35% (by weight) slurry by 75%. The impact of XFS-4272.00 on actual grinding parameters were evaluated using a pilot plant rod mill. Slurries containing 78% solids and XFS-4272.00 were successfully milled and asbestos fibres from that milling compared favourably in liberation and relative surface area to asbestos fibres obtained from milling a 4% slurry without additives.IntroductionAlthough the use of asbestos has been declining over the last few years, the large deposits of chrysotile in eastern Canada (Quebec in particular) remain very important. Asbestos production in Canada stands ninth in volume for mineral production with over 740 000 tonnes produced in 1985. Of this quantity, 722000 tonnes were exported with a value of $446 million . Canada is second in world production of asbestos behind the U.S.S.R ."

This paper deals with drilling and blasting techniques at the Phoenix mine, near Grand F1nks, B.C., which is now operated by The Granby Mining Company Ltd. The difficulties of open-pit mining through former underground workings are unique to this operation. Rock types are related to drilling conditions, and the methods used, or contemplated, to overcome the several difficulties are outlined. The equipment used is also mentioned. Finally, blasting techniques and costs are reviewed. Introduction T HE Granby Mining Company operates on open-pit copper mine and concentrator at the site of the original Phoenix mine, near Grand Forks in south-central British Columbia. The pit is a side-hill cut measuring approximately 1,000 by 2,000 ft., and covering a vertical range of from 4,550 to 4,950 feet above sea level. The mill is currently operating at 1,900 tons per day. A 4.5 to 1.0 waste to ore ratio necessitates the removal of some 15,000 tons of ore and waste per working day. In several European countries, including Russia, it has become economically attractive to utilize peat as a fuel for power generation, the production of metallurgical coke, the production of fuel briquettes for the domestic market and low-Btu gas. Although the economic base and availability of energy supplies in Europe is much different than it is in Canada, regional economics here may warrant the development of peat as an alternative source of energy. Canadian peatlands cover several thousands of square miles and have historically been considered as waste land. Now, with the increasing costs of other energy sources, it is apparent that fuel peat should be re-evaluated as a potential energy resource. A nation-wide inventory of peat deposits has been prepared and reserves evaluated for some of these areas where field surveys have been carried out. The paper describes alternative mining methods developed to meet some of the various conditions encountered on virgin peatland . These mining techniques are generally based on current peat technology exercised in other parts of the world and would be applicable in some of the peat regions of Canada. Cost estimates have been prepared for peat production in regions of Canada, and the socio-economic aspects of a large-scale fuel peat operation are discussed. Several potential utilization schemes have been described, with particular emphasis on electric power generation. The paper makes recommendations for steps to be taken in the development of a fuel peat industry in Canada.
