The use of electricity in coal mines dates almost from the time when it was realized chat it could be used to produce mechanical power. The first motor put in service underground was installed to drive a small pump nearly 40 years ago, and since then the use of electricity in mines has reached an extent undreamed of at that time. We now find its universal adoption in all the mining countries of the world. Great progress has been made in the development of mining electrical apparatus in the last decade, and excellent and adequate material is now available for the use of electricity underground. Although mining accidents, due to the use of electricity, are not frequent, the miner is justified in demanding chat all electrical apparatus for installation below ground be constructed with a greater degree of safety than that used on the surface. That this view is shared by the authorities of the different mining countries is evidenced by governmental regulations relative to the use, erection, and maintenance of electrical apparatus below ground. Those with which we are specially concerned are the regulations for the installation and use of electricity in the coal mines of Nova Scotia. The potential dangers of electricity in coal mines are: Shock or burns by contact from live parts. Shock or burns by contact with parts which, although normally dead, have become accidentally alive. Fire. Explosion of gas or coal-dust Explosion of apparatus.

The Division is concerned with physical methods as applied to geo-logical research and mapping. An at-tempt is made to describe long-term goals, illustrated by examples of projects in the fields of aeromagnetic interpretation, palaeomagnetic re-search, Pleistocene and groundwater geophysics, seismic surveying, electromagnetic research and instrument development. Cooperative projects in surveys and research, with universities, private companies and provincial organizations, are frequently undertaken. An outstanding example of this is the recently approved Federal-Provincial Aeromagnetic Survey Plan, the purpose of which is discussed both from an economic and a scientific point of view. "This case study produced for the metal mine operating in Kazakhstan, which has ventilation controlled manually and working continuously at maximum speed to keep air flowing through each part of the mine 24 hours a day. The mine auxiliary ventilation has been designed with the maximum length of ducting systems with extra air volumes to compensate for potential leakage. The mine provided auxiliary ventilation to all production stopes even to those, which for various operating reasons become temporarily inactive. However, mine safety has to consider risks associated with the deficit of fresh air for mine gases dilution and removal. The mine needs additional investments for re-designing ventilation network and therefore needs to estimate financial risks associated with it. The aim of this study is to conduct risk analysis for ventilation network optimisation processes at the operational metal mine in Kazakhstan. Mine ventilation surveys were undertaken for validation of the computerised ventilation model. The mine ventilation network modelling has been undertaken to be compliant with Kazakhstan mining regulations. Results of the mine ventilation optimisation processes were analysed in terms of financial risks for investments into reconstruction of the ventilation shafts, extension of the ventilation network, variable speed fans and automated regulators. Savings were resulted from improving ventilation system efficiency by reduce airflow in areas without mining activity and redistributing existing ventilation capacity. Based on savings derived from the optimised ventilation network an additional NPV has been received. Stochastic modelling use Monte Carlo simulation producing representation of possible outcomes for the additional NPV considering electricity pricing as a major variability. As result probability distribution for the optimised ventilation network demonstrates the additional NPV in a range of 1.6 - 2.2 million US$ in the corresponding defined value of 90%. Moreover, there is only 5% chance that the additional NPV to be less than 1.5 million US$. Conducted risk analysis for ventilation network optimisation processes gives considerations on volume of investments into the mine ventilation system.INTRODUCTIONCosts for mine ventilation are typically increasing when mines expand to deep levels. In the nickel industry, molten slags produced from a Pierce-Smith converter contain significant amounts of valuable metals in the forms of oxides and physically entrained matte droplets. A slag cleaning step, which takes places in an electrical slag-cleaning furnace, is therefore required to recover the valuable metals as a common practice. Utilization of a waste material from aluminum industry (i.e. spent potlining) as a flux to improve the slag cleaning in terms of both the metal recovery and the operation efficiency was studied by simulation with FactSage program. Results show that the addition of SPL could substantially reduce the slag viscosity due to its fluoride values, thus accelerating the settling of matte droplets. The carbon value in the SPL could also help increase the metal recovery by reducing the valuable metal oxides followed by settling.

The problem of thin and very thin coal seam extraction in a long perspective of Ukraine?s fuel and energy industry development was determined. Technical and economic benefits of coal seams selective mining technique including beneficial environmental impact were substantiated. The scientific and practical aspects of development of borehole underground coal gasification (BUCG) technology are considered. The technological scheme of underground gas generators is offered on the basis of the authors? criteria of fitness and adaptability to the mine and geological conditions. These charts foresee the preparation of gas generators from earth surface and directly from the present mine working by inclined horizontal boreholes. Basic research is directed at abandoned supplies extraction in coal mines. Concepts of technological decisions and technical implementation of the underground part of the gasification system are worked out with analytical models, with subsequent test verification on special options and a mine experimental gas generator. Forming the technological scheme of gasification is founded on the basis of tying up spatial and sentinel factosr of coal seam gasification taking into account sufficient impermeability of the system a «gas generator ? rock massif» and to dirigibility by thermochemical processes that flow in a rock massif. The offered solutions contain the possibility of creation of the power and chemical enterprises of gasification, taking into account the complex use of BUCG products in the ecologically reserved technological cycle. Gas generator efficiency is evaluated from an economic standpoint.

In the spring of 1977, Revenue Canada announced its intention to proceed in 1978 with a plan to impute a taxable benefit on interest-free and low-interest loans provided to employees. Such loan arrangements are often an important aspect of the compensation packages provided by many companies to their employees. Since the original announcement, there have been many submissions to Revenue Canada opposing this change, and the Finance Minister has now brought down a compromise solution with the introduction of a proposed amendment to the Income Tax Act. The amendment, which would not take effect until the 1979 taxation year, would require an employee, a shareholder or a related person to include a benefit in income measured as the difference between the interest on any such loan computed at bank prime rate and any interest actually paid. Only the amount of such a benefit in excess of $500 in a particular year would be required to be included in income. Of particular interest is the exclusion from these benefit rules of loans up to $50,000 in respect of the purchase of a house on the relocation of an employee and loans provided for the purchase of shares of an employer corporation.

This paper deals with the geology of the Smallwood mine in relation to its influence on mining and milling operations. Structure within the orebody, and variations in ore grade and material types, will be described and associated with the various drilling, blasting and milling operations. The orientation of planes of weakness, either bedding or jointing planes, and contacts between extremes in material types influence the size of the broken material. Generally speaking, variations in grinding rates and recovery can be associated with stratigraphic sequence and metamorphism.

The Kilmar dolomitic magnesite deposit~ in sourhwesr Quebec lie in Grenville Province sedimentary rocks that strike north and dip steeply west. The sediments comprise quartzitic, carbonate and argillaceous members. The middle or carbonate member hosts the magnesite and, like the two other members, has been intensely mewmorphosed. Magnesite occurs as lenticular shaped zones of altered limestone and is mixed with 5 to 30% dolomite crystals. Diopside, serpentine and mica are common accessory minerals. Magnesite appears to have formed from merasomarism of all or part of the carbonate member due to intrusion of hot magnesia-rich solutions. Magnesite is mined from a 490 m vertical shaf1 and is milled and burned into clinkers, which then are shipped 10 pyroprocessing industries around the world.

Summarized Foreword This paper is one of a series arranged by Institute Divisional Committees for the Fiftieth Anniversary Meeting, reviewing the experience of the major mining and metallurgical industries during the life of the Institute. The viewpoint is national and broadly technical. Geology is stressed on a continental scale without regard for provincial boundaries. The boundary between Canada and the United States is, however, so decisive a factor in our coal-mining economics and our political evolution that mention of its implications cannot be avoided. The Laurentian Shield in Canada makes the occurrence of coal deposits a geological impossibility between the St. Lawrence Lowlands and the Great Plains. All but five per cent of Canadian coal resources occur west of Winnipeg. The utilization of this ninety-five per cent of our coal wealth has to date been a consequence of transcontinental railways' development, and the small fuel needs of thinly populated wheat farming and cattle-raising territory, in what- to judge from the development of mixed farming and greater population density of Manitoba- is merely an initial stage of agricultural intensification and accordant population growth. There is no useful purpose in measuring coal resource against consumption rate in the West as a whole, because the resource is but partially known, and it is difficult to believe that industrialism based upon coal utilization is in any but its infant stage of growth. Canada west of Winnipeg possesses, moreover resources of petroleum and natural gas, which, together with the power-potential in the long watershed of the eastern slope of the Rocky mountains, give to population centres such as Calgary and Edmonton a choice of energy resources that is almost an embarrass des riches.

One of the design criteria for the Mount Wright facilities was to incorporate the latest proven automation techniques and devices for the new crushing, grinding and concentrating plant. The heart of the centralized control system is a Fox 1 process computer, located in the central control room in the administration building. The entire operation, i.e. crushing, conveying, storing, grinding and concentrating, is monitored and controlled, through the process computer , by one operator via a CRT console. In case of computer failure, the control is automatically, and without process interruption, transferred to manual back-up panels. One of the newest management tools, the process computer is programmed to collect and automatically print out shift. daily and monthly reports on tonnage, metallurgy and equipment operating time, for better planning of operations and preventative maintenance.

The V-shaped breakout zones around excavation boundary have been captured by a variety of numerical methods such as FEM and DEM methods and failure criteria such as linear Mohr-Coulomb and non-linear Hoek-Brown failure criteria. Diederichs (2007) used Hoek-Brown parameters in his spalling parameter approach; however, it is convenient to use the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion in numerical modeling because the material parameters can easily be determined from triaxial tests. It is shown in this study that when peak and residual strength parameters as well as dilation angle are properly defined, the brittle Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion can be used to model depth of failure near underground excavations satisfactorily.

Pneumatic delivery of solids is used because of extreme temperature changes and the possible scarcity of water. The present earth-based process and how it can be modified for these conditions is examined.

Introduction Gold holds an important place among the mineral products of Manitoba. In value, it ranks second only to copper, which in 1931 attained first place. The gold production increased from 23,189 fine ounces in 1930 to 102,969fine ounces in 1931. The production for 1930, worth $479,359, came almost entirely from the Central Manitoba mine. The production for 1931 was worth $2,128,558, of which $1,509,018 came from the Flin Flon mine, $528,951 from the Central Manitoba, and $83,497 from the Sherritt Gordon. The Gem Lake mine and some prospects produced $7,785. The total output of gold in Manitoba, from the first recorded production in 1917 to the end of 1931, is estimated at 178,669 fine ounces, valued at $3,693,332. The production for 1932 promises to reach a new high record, due chiefly to the stepping-up of tonnage at the Flin Flon plants and the coming into production of the San Antonio mill in May. History The Manitoba Act, constituting Manitoba a Province of the Dominion, was passed in 1870 and provided for the vesting in the Crown of all un-granted or waste lands of Manitoba, as well as for the administration of these lands by the Dominion of Canada for the purposes of the Dominion "subject to, and except and so far as the same may be affected by, the conditions and stipulations contained in the agreement for the surrender of Rupert's Land by the Hudson's Bay Company to the Crown". Included in these waste lands were large areas later prospected and staked out as mineral lands. Up to the year 1912, that vast territory extending from the 12th base line to the 60th parallel of latitude, and from the Saskatchewan boundary to Hudson bay, was part of the District of Keewatin. Although added to Manitoba in 1912, the administration of its mineral lands also remained vested in the Dominion, so that all mineral lands within the Province upon which deposits of gold ore have been found were disposed of and administered by the Mineral Lands Division, Department of the Interior, until the transfer of the natural resources to the Province of Manitoba, on July 15th, 1930.

This paper describes the progress accomplished at the Noranda Technology Centre in the field of three-dimensional computer-aided underground blast design. Traditional methods of laying out underground blasts are reviewed, and the new computer-aided approach is described. Time savings achieved through the use of BLASTCAD can be advantageously used to better engineer blasts, using models and blast vibration analysis. Future work involving the attachment of blast models directly to the system is also addressed.

Many factors affect the forge ability of steels. One of the major factors is chemical composition.' This article discusses the individual effects of alloying elements and the effect of the resultant modification of microstructure onforgeability. INTRODUCTION T HE use of alloy steels is expanding considerably and the fabrication procedures for such alloys are becoming more complex. An attempt is made in this article to describe the effect of alloying elements on the hot-workability of steels. Most of the data reported here are taken from the studies of Ihrig, Clark and others (Refs. 1-4). Chemical composition is not the only controlling factor. Grain size and surface condition of the material, forging temperature, and speed of deformation are also important. Certain conclusions can be drawn regarding the effect of various alloying elements on the hot-work-ability of forging stock. The results of hot-twist tests are considered useful in this connection as the number of twists to failure has been taken as the level of forgeability at a particular temperature. As the first mine-to-metal zinc operation utilising atmospheric leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning, Skorpion Zinc faces unique challenges and opportunities. One of these challenges is found in the solvent extraction circuit, in which di-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) is used as the organic extractant. Although D2EHPA is an excellent extractant for zinc, it suffers from the co-extraction of ferric iron, which is produced during leaching and by the corrosion of the grinding media. This situation is partially mitigated by iron precipitation in the neutralisation step prior to solvent extraction. Unfortunately, some ferric iron still reports to the solvent extraction process. This leads to a slow build up of iron in the organic phase. Chemical stripping is used to maintain the Fe concentration at an acceptable level. In this paper, the efficiency of the iron removal process is discussed.

"During the past few years emphasis has been placed on the importance of major faults, fault zones, and associated structures in localizing ore deposition. This interest has developed partly through experience in mining camps in other parts of the world, and partly by the discovery of such structures associated with ore deposits in the Abitibi region, northwestern Quebec. The recognition of these structures has been brought about chiefly by detailed mapping that has been gradually extended along most of the southern gold belt of Quebec and across adjacent parts of Ontario. In the Chibougamau region of northern Abitibi, progress has been made in mapping major faults by using aeroplane photographs with a scale of about 1,000 feet to 1 inch for field mapping. These studies have shown that many large faults occur in the Abitibi region; also that there is a relationship, direct or indirect, between faults and mineral deposition. The faults are, however, of more than one type and age, and this should be clearly appreciated in any planned programme for prospecting this great region adequately.Geology of the Abitibi RegionGeneral GeologyFaults of more than one age and type occur in the Abitibi region. In order to appreciate some of the age relationships of the faults, a brief summary of the historical aspects and major structural features of the geology (fig. 1) is necessary. These historical aspects may be briefly summarized in chronological order as follows:(1) Accumulation of Archæan lavas and associated pyroclastic rocks, either alternating with, or essentially followed by, deposition of sedimentary rocks, and interrupted at least once by local and perhaps regional folding and erosion."

The basic principles of systems analysis are presented. A model has been designed to determine the location of the Main opening in the presence of three or more stock orebodies. The necessary condition is to find a location for the Collection point which is an essential element in opening up each orebody (stock). The model takes into account the total transportation costs from each orebody to the collection point. Three variants are considered provided that the orefield is divided into two levels at least: - a collection point is designed at every level; - a collection point is designed at the lowest level, i.e. where the so-called concentration level is formed; - the collection point is located at a point between the planes of the two levels; The effect of the depth of mining and mine output on determining the method of opening up the orefield has been analyzed by considering a vertical and/or an inclined shaft. A function has been constructed which allows for investigating in both a static and dynamic regime the capital costs for constructing the whole complex including the shaft. The character of the function does not allow finding the global limits. Therefore, it is of particular importance to specify the limiting conditions. In this case these are the flow capacity of development openings and the shaft. The basic groups of cost and natural indicators for assessing and selecting an optimal technological solution have been systematized. The combined analysis of the two approaches to finding the location of the Main opening and determining the mining method enables us to determine when an inclined shaft is best, and the depth at which opening by a vertical shaft has no alternative. Thus, a transition area is formed for which the selection of an optimal technological solution requires an analysis similar to that proposed in this paper. Conclusions are finally drawn which serve as a basis for determining the areas of application of each opening, including the use of a combined scheme of mine opening. The approach presented can be used in both investigating the possibilities for opening up new orefields and reconstructing existing ones in cases when the mining operations go deeper.

"The property of McWatters Gold Mines, Limited, is in the east-central part of Rouyn township and about 6 miles east-southeast of the town of Rouyn. It includes 35 claims, the group of 5, staked originally, and 30 claims acquired in later years. The Rouyn-Val d'Or road and the Noranda Senneterre branch of the Canadian National railway both pass within a few hundred feet of the mine.The group of claims in which the mine occurs was first staked in 1922, but gold was not discovered until August 1932 when a schistose zone including veins of quartz carrying considerable free gold was laid bare in a stripped area in the northeastern part of claim R.11604. Diamond drilling undertaken in 1932, and continued into 1933, shouwd that the gold extended for at least 1,000 feet along the strike. A 3-compartment shaft was sunk to 418 feet in 1933. A mill having a capacity of 50 tons a day was constructed in 1934, and enlarged to 150 tons in 1935. Production began in 1934 and continued without interruption to June 1944. Except for a few diamond drill holes, there have been no operations on the property since that time. The maximum depth of the mine workings is 1,50) feet. A total of 368,013 tons of ore having a value of $3,946,752 and an average grade of $11.04 was mined during the years of operation.GEOLOGYThe ore mined from the property occurred within the south limb of an eastward plunging syncline of volcanics and sediments cut off on the north by the Cadillac-Bouzan Lake fault. Because the rock formations within the syncline have been severed from those outside with which they were originally continuous, their correlation is based almost wholly on lithological similarity. They include an irregular middle zone of conglomerate and greywacke underlain by north and south bands of andesite agglomerate and andesite tuff, in which lenticular bands of pillowed andesite are included."

Introduction The property of Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Limited is situated at the northeastern end of Kirkland lake, Ontario. It lies immediately east of the Lake Shore mine, and about in the centre of the Kirkland Lake camp. The district is served by the Swastika-Rouyn branch of the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario railway, the town of Kirkland Lake being four miles northeast of Swastika, which is 63 miles north of Cobalt and 392 miles north of Toronto. The mine is developed by three shafts and has more than twenty-eight miles of underground workings. There are two main producing veins, which lie in a porphyry boss 1,350 feet wide. Milling started in May, 1921, and to-date (January, 1933) the mine has produced gold to the value of $21,770,183. Present production is at the rate of 800 tons of ore per day. For a description of the geology, reference may be made to the report by E. W. Todd on the Kirkland Lake Gold Area (1). Structure and Ore Deposits The two major productive veins on the Wright-Hargreaves property are known as the North vein and the South vein. In the vicinity of the shafts these veins are approximately 550 feet apart. A third vein, known as the Inclined vein, has been worked from its junction with the South vein at the 2,000-foot level to its intersection with the North vein at the 800-foot level. This inclined vein has to date been found only in the area east of the eastern major north-south fault. The main North vein and South vein have a general vertical dip, although local rolls and post-ore faults throw certain sections out of line. From the surface to 3,900 feet, the North vein is displaced south less than 200 feet, and the South vein at the same horizon is almost perpendicularly beneath the surface showings.
