Multiple regression analysis applied to ventilation records of stopes on the Witwatersrand showed that it was possible to estimate the temperature increase per 100 ft for a new stope with a standard deviation of 0' 5°F. The analysis also threw light on the relative effect on this estimate of five different factors.Application of the analysis of variance technique to a factorialexperiment on the production of dust during rock drilling showed that the effects of air and water pressure were quite small but also showed that the between-machine variation was unexpectedly large.Analysis of variance also proved a valuable means for assessing the bias and random error variation of aneroid barometers used in pressure surveys.INTRODUCTIONThree examples are discussed to illustrate the use of the techniques of "analysis of variance" and "multiple regression" in research on the ventilation of gold mines. Although the techniques are basically similar their application to each example has a slightly different emphasis and the examples were chosen for this reason. The variation ofemphasis is as follows.1. Temperature increases in stapes. This work was undertaken as a preliminary to possible extensive controlled experimentation (Lambrechts, 1959). Data collected in routine work by the mine ventilation personnel were used for analysis and no specific experiments were carried out. The main object was to see whether such data could provide any strong pointers to factors which might be worthy ofmore careful study and to factors which could initially be ignored. Of course, there was hope that the study might provide an empirical formula for rough forecasts.

Today, more and more tunnel ventilation systems are based on NO2 (or NO) and visibility measurements. Due to the significant decrease of CO emissions in countries with EU emission standards, which were adopted by Australia in 2004, CO is no longer a key factor for tunnel air quality monitoring and is often only measured for plausibility reasons (eg according to the German guideline RABT2006). Nitrogen dioxide, which is a good indicator for the overall air pollution along roads, is now taking over the leading role not only for ventilation control but also for air quality monitoring and in future probably for checking the function of air filtration plants in tunnels. Due to the lack of equipment for reliable and long-term NO2 measurements in road tunnels in the past, there are only very few standards giving limit values for NO2 in road tunnels. Furthermore there are not many records of NO2 readings over longer periods in different types of tunnels. SICK MAIHAK, a major supplier of measurement devices for controlling tunnel ventilation, has introduced the first monitor in 2006, specifically designed for measuring NO2, NO and visibility simultaneously in road tunnels. There are now experiences and results from the first tunnels equipped with this kind of system. This paper will present and discuss the results and experiences from these tunnels and explain the different levels of NO2 in different tunnel types. Furthermore, the status of air quality standards for road tunnels regarding NO2 limit values and the current status of discussion in various countries about NO2 limits will be presented.

Organic complexing agents have received special attention over the past few decades in the search for reagents for improved flotation separation of minerals, especially non-sulphides. The majority of such reagents that have been proposed over the past few decades have remained largely a laboratory curiosity, except perhaps alkyl hydroxamates, because their selection is seldom based on commercial viability. In this regard, the choice of complexing agents such as oximes may be more realistic because of their widespread use in solvent extraction of copper. Our earlier studies have confirmed that they are also effective as collectors for copper oxide minerals, including chrysocolla which is the most difficult copper mineral to beneficiate. The flotation behaviour of chrysocolla for several structurally-related hydroxyoximes were studied as a function of pH and oxime concentration and the role of structural features examined. The structural changes studied included substitutions in both chelating and non-chelating parts of the molecule. The results indicated that, contrary to expectations, many of the structural changes in the basic molecule, salicylaldoxime, do not have a positive effect on collector efficiency. The reduction in collector efficiency is rationalised on the basis of possible steric factors affecting complexation and packing of the collector species on the mineral surface as well as effects due to changes in electron density brought about by substituents. Introduction of alkyl substituents on the oximic carbon of salicylaldoxime yielded the highest collector efficiency.

The Writer's knowledge of this region began in 1912, while he was with the Geological Survey of South Australia, and, investigated the principles governing the occurrence of fresh and saline ground waters in the area then being opened for closer settlement by the railways under construction from Port Lincoln.These field investigatons for water were extensive rather than intensive, but other examinations covered certain mineral aspects. Brown.AREAThe area dealt with, approximately 21,000 square miles, lies to the south of the latitude of Port Augusta.TOPOGRAPHYAs a whole the region is one of low relief, but the Olinthus Range, west of Cowell and north of Cleve, reaches an elevation of 2,000ft., while there is als0 a high area west of Port Lincoln and Tumby Bay. At the north end of the region the Gawler Ranges are formed by the dissection of a thick sheet of felspar porphyry extending over two degrees of longitude, by a width of 20 to 70 miles, with fairly uniform maximum elevations of the undissected portions of the order of 1,000 ft. above sea level. There is a significant amount of past evidence that links blasting and occurrences of slope failure. Particularly of great concern at Telfer Gold Mine is the effect of open pit blasting on the stability of the footwall slope above the underground portal and the stability of underground structures. For this reason, Newcrest Mining Ltd invited JKMRC to conduct necessary field measurements and numerical modelling with the following objectives:assess the dynamic stability of the footwall slope above the portal; assess the characteristics of current and future blasts in the open pit; and prepare open pit blasting guidelines that will minimise the detrimental effect of blasting on slope stability. To achieve these tasks it was necessary to develop a scaled distance attenuation curve for blast vibrations. In order to validate the developed vibration attenuation curves it was necessary to monitor vibrations from a production blast. Using JKMRC blast design software tools, the vibration of the production blast was also modelled from the blast design and vibration results from single hole blasts. The intention was, assuming that the observed and modelled vibrations were close in terms of frequency and amplitude, to use the software tools to model the vibrations of future blasts and assess their likely effect on slope stability. Numerical modelling of the dynamic stability of the footwall slope was done using the FLAC finite difference code and the UDEC distinct element code. The results of the numerical modelling and of the field measurements of the blast induced ground vibrations were combined into the blast design rules that relate distance between the slope and the blast, charge weight per delay and number of blasts necessary to cause failure of the slope.

The traditional trading of iron ores is based on chemical specifications and particle size distribution. However, recent characterisation studies, that bring additional information like mineralogical composition and microstructural (textural) aspects, have become important. They contribute to determination of the iron ores downstream beneficiation operations and subsequent steelmaking processing, allowing improvements on both new and existing processes. Despite progress in commercial scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM/EDS) automatic instruments in the last decade, these systems are not capable of performing the identification and discrimination of major iron ore minerals (haematite and magnetite) and the consequent description of its microstructure. On the other hand, reflected light microscopy (RLM) can easily distinguish the iron oxides by their reflectancies, but it cannot discriminate quartz and epoxy resin, which present similar colour on images. The present work proposes an innovative method to perform a quantitative mineralogy characterisation of iron ore based on RLM-SEM co-site microscopy. This technique combines images obtained by RLM and SEM through an automatic registration procedure that accurately aligns the two kinds of images of each field. In fact, it creates multi-dimensional images, which are then analysed using image processing and pattern recognition techniques. The case study is an itabiritic iron ore from Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (Brazil) which contains mainly quartz, goethite, magnetite and haematite. The discrimination of phases that are not distinguishable with either RLM (epoxy resin and quartz) or SEM (haematite and magnetite) can be performed through this multimodal approach, allowing the subsequent mineralogical quantification. The mineralogical quantification computed by image analysis was consistent with independently obtained results based on the Rietveld technique.

A pilot scale experimental investigation of the condensation of zinc vapour from smelter off-gases was performed in conjunction with a mathematical modelling study of the system. The work investigated the feasibility of using the high heat and mass transfer rates associated with a fluidised bed to condense zinc directly from smelter off-gases containing zinc vapour. Of particular interest was whether zinc would revert to zinc oxide during the process of condensation, and whether a zinc fog would form and be carried out of the condenser. A 0.1 m diameter fluidised bed condenser was mounted on the top of a 200 kVA DC electric arc furnace in which mixtures of vapours and gases were generated at 1150 - 1300¦C. The gas/vapour mixtures investigated included Zn/N2, Zn/N2/CO/CO2 and Zn/N2/H2/H2O. Greater than 90 per cent of the zinc was deposited on the zircon sand bed of the condenser, and there was no sign of zinc oxide formation, suggesting that the rate of heat transfer was faster than the reaction rate for zinc oxide formation. There was also no evidence that fog was being formed in the condenser. Using the methods of Kunii and Levenspeil (1991), a mathematical model was developed to predict the behaviour of the fluidised bed condenser. The model enabled the distribution of gas/vapour temperature and bed temperature to be determined as a function of distance from the condenser inlet. Similarly the partial pressure of zinc vapour in the gas mixture, and hence the mass transfer rate of zinc to the particles, was determined. Experimental data allowed validation of the predicted bed and gas/vapour temperatures.

A method of assessing the blastability of a rock mass is presented which makes use of five, readily available, simple parameters. These are the Rock Mass Description, Joint Plane Spacing, Joint Plane Orientation, Specific Gravity Influence and Hardness. For a particular rock mass a value is assigned to each parameter and the Blastability Index is calculated from these values. Application of the Index in blast planning and computer modelling is discussed.
