In 2010 Agnew Gold Mine (AGM) struggled to produce the required tonnages from its stopes. The longhole rises used to create void in stopes were unreliable and often failed to gain the designed rise height. The number of firings per stope was having an adverse impact on the ground conditions at the stope brows, impeding stope productivity.Through practical experimentation with longhole drill rigs, box hole rigs and development drill rigs as well as trialling new methods in conjunction with reviewing drill hole data, drill hole accuracy was observed to be an issue on-site. Innovative dragging methods such as the reverse drag, combined with a slope instead of a vertical face on the rear of stopes, have improved dragging and a reduction of firings per stope, enabling larger production blasts.The methods trialled and subsequently implemented at AGM have facilitated the mine achieving budgeted targets for six consecutive quarters. The increasing use of continuous miners in the extraction of high coal seams has amplified the need for enhanced ventilation systems in the headings. Owing to larger face dimensions and higher production rates, more ventilating air is required to effectively dilute liberated methane to acceptable concentrations. However, the increased air quantities raise and entrain greater amounts of dust, to which the operator is subjected. Various methods (eg sprayfans, on-board scrubbers and jet fans) are used in various configurations and combinations to ventilate the headings. These arrangements generally result in a complex air flow pattern, which complicates achieving an optimum balance between diluting methane and minimising dust capture. In order to cost effectively investigate and propose solutions to this problem for the South African coal mining industry, the Division of Mining Technology has embarked on an extensive work program to evaluate various ventilation methods presently in use. Four currently generic ventilation patterns in various heading scenarios have been simulated using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) computer program. Evaluating these outputs against a predetermined set of criteria allows the best system for a particular situation to be chosen. The program also facilitates fine-tuning of an adopted system without incurring the cost and inconvenience of doing such tests in situ. This process not only provides solutions at significantly reduced costs, but also yields deeper insights into the factors affecting heading ventilation than hitherto possible.

Today there is a vast amount of information available relative to the performance of tunnel boring machines, and associated systems. The data referred to here consists of project reports, manufacturer's equipment literature and papers concerning almost every aspect of the excavation process. Why is it then, that many projects that employ full face tunnel boring machines (TBMs), on average perform significantly less than the peak performances reported in this industry?

The geographical and geological situations of the two mineral sand deposits currently being mined by Western Titanium Limited and the mining methods in use are briefly described. Production scheduling involving the ability to vary the proportions of the major minerals produced, together with maintaining a constant feed grade to the wet concentrator has been assuming greater importance to the company in recent years as the relative value of these minerals, due mainly to technological advances and environmental considerations, is subject to significant and rapid change. Manual calculation, even using a programmable calculator, became a trade-off between man hours and data usage. Schedules were updated infrequently and only a fraction of the avail- able data was used. In July 1975 a Data General NOVA 2/10 minicomputer with a 24K word core and three cassette drives was purchased. A suite of programmes was developed using BASIC to assist in production scheduling and these were opera- tional early in 1976.

Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23,000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic. Acceptance of this hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so. Consequently there is little scop- for the discovery of extensions of this field. However, the stratigraphic interval between the source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically higher host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (pyritic carbonaceous, and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.

Human habitation of the Pacific Rim began when mankind began migrations out of its place of origin in the Rift Valley of Central Africa c. 4million years ago. This migration was erratic and largely controlled by advances and retreat of the various Ice Ages which, while limiting advances in areas of intense cold, at the same time aided migration thro-ugh the creation of land bridges as ocean levels declined during periods of glacial advance (Fig.l).Mankind began its trek to the Pacific from Africa across India then north into southern China and south into Indonesia (Fig.2). In part, these migrations stimulated early technological develop-ments to fulfill needs and adapt to environmental conditions; thus, these nomads developed stone and bone tools, animal skin clothing and the use of caves and other simple shelters. The earliest evid-ence of mankind's use of fire can be found at Zhou-koudaian near Beijing, c.400,000 BP.From China, the completion of the Pacific Rim's population can be attributed to the last Ice Age that dropped the ocean level by more than 300 feet and created land bridges about 40,000 BP allowing migration across the Bering Strait into Alaska and to Australia from Indonesia. The American migration reached Mexico about 30,000 BP, and by 6000 BP the occupancy of the Pacific Rim was complete when the first human settlers reached the southern tip of Chile.

Before proceeding I wish to say that the excellent diagrams by which my paper is illustrated are the work of Mr. C. H. Moss, manager of the mine and for the privilege piIling information not previously made public.The limited time at my disposal has coolled to, curtail the scope of my paper to a few practices in ore treatment which are being worked on the Kalgurli Mine, but which I believe are of more than ordinary interest to thp~e Goncerned in modern treatment of gold ores. As an introduction to my subject it is, necessary that I should give a brief outline of the process by whiGh the gold is won from the complex sulpho-telluride ore of the Kalguili mine.My business is not to enter into any discussion as to the relative merits of the two rival sulpho-telluride ore treatment processes at work on the Kalgoorlie field, viz, the treatment of the unroasted ore after shining by solutions of bromocyanide, as against the treatment of the ore-after roasting by solutions of potassium or sodium cyanide either in filter presses or percolating sand vats. Even if reliable costs and percentages of extractions were obtainable in each case, it would not constitute an infallible basis of comparison, as the larger plants would necessarily have an advantage in cost per ton as against the small plants, and the other conditions obtaining are in many Cases dissimilar.

In recent years it has been shown that the concept of using partial molar excess Gibbs energy (G̅ex) to explain the behaviour of collectors in the recovery of minerals can be usefully applied to explain flotation performance. Fundamentally this is because hydrophobicity of a mineral particle on which a collector is adsorbed may be strongly related to the fact that the alkyl chain associated with the collector behaves in the same way as any hydrocarbon would in an aqueous medium. This hydrocarbon-water system represents a classical non-ideal mixture, and such mixtures are quantified thermodynamically by determining the activity coefficient of the hydrocarbon moiety of the collector and hence its G̅ex in the mixture. It has been shown that G̅ex is a more rigorous indicator of the contributions of various alkyl groups of a collector than HLB (Corin and O’Connor, 2014) and was also able to explain aspects of froth behaviour (Harris and O’Connor, 2017) and hydrophobicity (O’Connor, 2021). The present paper is aimed at extending the above concepts in two different ways. Firstly, a study is undertaken of a range of results previously reported in which various reagents containing different alkyl groups were analysed in terms of their effect on contact angle and their performance as flotation reagents in terms of recovery. These results sustain the previous observations that there is a robust positive relationship between hydrophobicity as indicated by flotation recovery and contact angle and G̅ex of the alkyl group associated with the collector. Secondly, on the basis of the observation that increases in G̅ex are indicative of increases in the hydrophobicity of the mineral particle-collector aggregate, a study was undertaken to examine the effect of ions typical of electrolytes in water as well as the effect of the presence of alcohols and of pH on G̅ex of the collector alkyl group. In the former two instances the absence of any correlation between G̅ex and recoveries supported the proposition of the respective authors of these studies that the major effect of these electrolytes and added alcohols may be on particle–bubble attachment rather than on the hydrophobicity of the mineral/collector in the aqueous system. On the other hand, the effect of pH on G̅ex correlated reasonably well with changes reported in the literature on the effect of pH on recovery and contact angle.

In Australia, current production of rare earth element (REE) minerals, monazite and xenotime, occurs as by-product from titanium-enriched placers and beach sands. Undeveloped REE resources are associated with carbonatites, alkaline igneous rocks, pegmatites, phosphorites, cemented fluvial sandstones, and uranium mineralisations. The REE are held within a range of minerals including silicates, phosphates, a1uminophosphates, carbonates, and oxides. The development of these REE resources may require new processing and extraction methods. The distribution of REE in the currently mined ore minerals, monazite and bastnaesite, does not match that requested by the market. Exploration for new REE resources should be focused on ores with more marketable REE distributions, particularly with heavy REE, neodymium, samarium, europium and yttrium enrichments. Such ores occur within alkaline igneous rocks, in laterites overlying carbonatites and alkaline igneous rocks, and in placers derived from low-grade regional and contact metamorphic sediments. Lateritic REE deposits may be easily and economically mined by shovel in open pits and are unlikely to require extensive crushing and milling. In addition, lateritic REE clay deposits may be processed by simple hydrometallurgicaltreatment mehtods.

Fatigue is the primary cause of failure of structural and mechanical components subject to dynamic loading. Recognition of this basic fact and the development of appropriate techniques and details are important in the design and repair of off highway trucks (OHTs). The frames and appendages of OHTs and other mobile plant used in the Pilbara are subject to tough operating conditions. Any fatigue-prone details quickly show up and become a maintenance liability of considerable concern. Much of this equipment is approaching the limit of its fatigue life and maintenance managers face decisions on whether to repair or replace. Even new equipment often contains some poor details which suffer distress soon after commissioning. In those cases a repair is required which will reinstate the detail to its original intended design life. Repair details must be practical and cost effective. They must also be tailored to the capability and expertise available in the field or in local manufacturers' establishments. This is particularly important where original equipment was manufactured overseas and long delivery times are involved. Lessons are drawn from components which have failed, using the evidence constructively, to provide an upgraded part or an improved substitute. With the experience now available it is relatively easy to extrapolate to cover new problem areas. This paper describes specialised techniques of mechanical fastening and detailing for low fatigue susceptibility, built up over many years of experience with OHTs and other mining plant and equipment in the Pilbara.

Mining projects have long since presented challenges for the protection of the water environment. Lessons learnt from historical pollution incidents and increasingly stringent environmental controls have significantly improved the environmental performance of mines in developed countries. In contrast, water protection legislation and guidance in the Former Soviet Union (FSU) countries, based on the æpolluter paysÆ principle, has not promoted the prevention of water pollution, and examples of poor environmental performance in mining still exist. However, there is now evidence of emerging legislation encouraging the protection of the water environment. This paper provides an overview of water protection legislation in the Russian Federation and Armenia and highlights some of the challenges facing international mining companies developing projects. A mining case study is described, which highlights how communities in Armenia increasingly value their water environment. Here, greater public participation in development projects is playing a vital role in influencing water protection legislation. It is considered that public opinion and emerging legislation will increasingly present challenges for the development of mining projects.

Copper plays an essential role in our society. It is one of the key materials supporting economic growth and human development in emerging economies, for its common use in construction, power generation and transmission. It is also a critical metal for the transition to a low carbon future, particularly for its uses in renewable energy and electric vehicles. As a result, global demand for copper has been increasing steadily and is predicted to continue in the future. The demand-supply gap is currently growing, and new mines will be needed to fill it. This project observes the current pipeline of copper mining projects, which are characterised by technical complexity (lower grades, deeper deposits, complex mineralogy etc.) but also environmental, social and governance (ESG) complexities. A common assumption in the mining industry is that a rise in copper prices will unlock these deposits. However, while most technical complexities are price sensitive and are likely to be overcome in favourable economic conditions, the influence of ESG complexities is more difficult to evaluate. Roof conditions at Southern Colliery, the second longwall mine to be established at German Creek, were found to be much stronger and more massive than at the earlier longwall mine on the lease. Investigations were made to ascertain the level of face support required for longwall extraction under the changed geological conditions. Geotechnical information was provided from drillholes and highwall exposures. Downhole geophysical logs, notably the sonic velocity log, were used to obtain a distribution of the major lithological units over the mine area. A representative type section of the strata and geomechanical properties was compiled to form the basis for numerical modelling. Two-dimensional finite element methods were used to predict strata movements and chock loads under cantilevered roof conditions. The model incorporated a 6.3 in thick roof beam either bonded or detached, with either a 2 in or 5 in overhang. The solid rib, immediate roof, chock support and goaf were modelled as distinct parts, in addition a front abutment stress profile, derived from three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity analysis, was superimposed on the model.

Rock bolting has become the most important method of ground support at Mount Isa. Various types of rock bolts are used to suit the different applications and requirements. To apply rock bolting techniques satisfactorily, it is necessary to have some knowledge of the nature of the rock, the type of rock failure, any stress redistribution which may occur during the intended life of the rock bolt and the time for which ground support is required. At Mount Isa there are a number of dif- ferent applications of rock bolts for ground support, and some trends in rock bolting techniques.

When lying over 200-250m depth, many seams and surrounding strata are gassy enough to create mining difficulties , particularly in highly productive longwalls as well as in their development headings. In addition to the gassiness of seams or stra- ta in the outgassing volume around working, the shape expansion and limits of this one influences much the intensity of gas emission. These charac- teristics of outgassing volume differ very much ac- cording to the permeabilities of the seams and strata encountered by their fracturation due to mi- ning. Moreover, the shape of the outgassing volume is very much modified by the rate of advance of the face. In nearly impermeable deposits, gas flows from a limited outgassing volume. When the rates of advance of a face are medium or low, the shape and dimensions of this volume do not change very much and outgassing volume is translated progressi- vely with the face advance. This explains why, in the past, it was observed that there was for each seam an average steady specific emission of gas, round which the volume of gas evolved per mined ton or per mined unit area, calculated over a cer- tain time, was oscillating. Combined with a statisti- cal irregularity coefficient, this allowed prediction gas of emission and thus to take decisions for air ventilation, drainage, and eventually production.

The geological environments of gold deposits are reviewed in relation to the strong resurgence in exploration for gold since 1979. The resurgence is due mainly to New Zealand's geological endowment with gold and its history as a gold producer. Major past production was from Cenozoic placers of Otago and Westland, late Cenozoic epithermal deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield, and the respective Paleozoic and Mesozoic lode deposits of the Reefton and Otago Goldfields. These same geological environments are the targets of current exploration, mainly in extensions of previously mined deposits. On the Westland and Otago Goldfields alluvial and fluvioglacial gravel placers, mainly representing lateral and depth extensions of previously worked ground, are being mined and prospected. Gold production in 1984 was exclusively from these deposits, and the development of mobile concentration plants has resulted in a great increase in mining activity. Mineralised zones adjacent to previously mined lodes in the Hauraki Goldfield, Reefton Goldfield, and at Macraes Flat (Otago Goldfield) are being intensively explored. At Waihi (Hauraki), an open-pittable resource of about 10 million tonnes of ore has recently been delineated. Some new deposit types and little explored environments are also receiving attention. They include: gold-sulphide quartz veins hosted in an alkaline granite dike in west Nelson; hot spring type gold deposits in fossil geothermal (epithermal) systems of Northland, the Hauraki Goldfield and the Taupo Volcanic Zone; and marine placers off the West Coast where an area of auriferous gravels has been outlined near Hokitika. There is potential in known deposits and prospects currently being evaluated for a large increase in gold production by the early 1990s.

Controlled Source Audio Magnetotelluric (CSAMT) surveys were carried out by Glass Earth (New Zealand) Limited (Glass Earth) in 2006 - 2007 to investigate epithermal gold targets in the central North Island of New Zealand. The surveys were conducted using a Zonge GDP 32 8-channels receiver and a Zonge XMT 32 transmitter powered by a 16 KW generator. The electric field dipole was maintained at 20 m length (five dipoles per 100 m spread) and the frequency ranged from 4 KHz to 4 Hz. Only scalar (TM mode) signals were recorded, using one magnetic coil per spread. The transmitter bipoles were 1 - 4 km in length and located about 5 to 10 km from each survey area.   Sixteen individual target areas were surveyed by June 2007. The CSAMT survey lines (100 - 400 m spacing) were determined mainly on results from previous ultra-detailed airborne magnetic and gravity surveys conducted by Glass Earth in 2005. The data from each CSAMT line was carefully examined to remove any spurious signals and processed using Zonge SCS2D software, which can produce smooth 2D resistivity inversions of the field data. The results were presented as resistivity sections and maps to help the identification of exploratory drilling targets, mainly from the existence of subsurface high resistivity zones (resistors) that can be interpreted as caused by silicification associated with epithermal mineralization.   An example of processing and interpretation of the CSAMT data is presented in this paper on results from Glass EarthÆs Tahunaatara target, where CSAMT surveys have identified zones of epithermal mineralization confirmed by exploratory drilling.
