WMC Limited, owner/operator of Olympic Dam, the worldÆs largest underground uranium mine and the fourth largest underground copper mine has now completed an expansion that has been classed as a benchmark in the mining industry. To achieve a production increase from 3.4 to 9.25 Mtpa from an underground mining operation in two years was a major challenge, it was essential to review the overall materials handling system from æthe face to the stockpileÆ. The challenge was two-fold:How to deliver 30 000 tonne of ore per day to the processing plant, from a single underground mine? To provide the processing plant with a consistent metallurgical feed. This paper traces the transformation from the old to the new materials handling system at Olympic Dam.

A clear understanding of the intensity of coal and rock burst is the basis for future research on burst mechanism and control. There has been a wide variety in the description of coal and rock burst damage at different countries using multi-methods, which makes the common understanding even more challenging. Therefore, this paper presents a broad review on the quantifications of intensity of coal and rock burst and seismic risk around the world, considering critical factors including seismic energy, magnitude, peak particle velocity and ejection velocity. It is found that the seismic energy of coal and rock burst can widely range from 0.002 MJ to 60000 MJ, with equivalent Richter magnitude from -1 to 4. The daily seismic energies can be used for seismic risk potential assessment, with energy levels from 0.1 KJ to 10 MJ, which is much lower than the burst sources. The magnitude of the seismic events can be also estimated based on the weight of damaged coal mass and human senses of vibration and sound. For the seismic intensity represented by peak particle velocity (ppv), it keeps constant within fault radius and attenuates with a speed of 1/r4 and 1/r in near and far field respectively, thus it is possible for a small seismic event to induce considerable ppv causing severe damage if the epicentral distance is small enough. There has not been a strong correlation between the ejection velocity and ppv, as seismic energy is only one of the energy sources that contribute to the kinetic energy of burst damage. The Kelian Gold mine project won two excellence awards from the Victorian Division of the Institution of Engineers, Australia. It was a challenging project, fast tracked in a remote and inhospitable tropical environment. The creation of a profitable and efficient mine was a significant engineering and project management achievement. The difficulties encountered and the way they were managed provide valuable lessons. These include the importance of sufficiently detailed engineering in all aspects of the job to enable the best estimates possible to be prepared during feasibility studies, the need to prepare the project scope and execution plan with disciplined and rigorous attention to detail by a highly experienced team and the value of identifying, assessing and mitigating risk and uncertainty during execution. The practical benefits of applying these lessons were demonstrated in the successful management of technical uncertainty on the recent diversion of the Kelian River to allow the expansion of the Kelian mine.

The massive 1100 Orebody in Mount IsaÆs X41 Copper Mine has been extracted over the last 40 years form north to south utilising sublevel open stoping methods.De velopment has continually stepped ahead of production to provide access to new primary stoping blocks. The remaining secondary pillars contain stopes with one, two or three fill mass exposures and were constrained by access requirements and stope extraction turnaround time.The remaining southern mining areas consist of large 40 m wide by 300 to 400 m long east-west transverse pillars that have been left to provide access for ventilation and service requirements. Three large transverse cross-cuts or transverse pillars û 4180 x/c, 4010 x/c and the Panel pillar now remain. The 4180 x/c was the last major transverse pillar to be successfully broken.This transverse pillar is being extracted in a retreating sequence, creating 3SLOS stopes due to the surrounding backfilled stopes.In recent years the extraction of the first, and most critical, stopes in the transverse pillars have resulted in large changes to the induced stress field. This paper describes the extraction of the 1.1 million tonne stope P418 in the 4180 x/c pillar.T echnical challenges that were faced and how they were overcome to allow for the successful extraction of the stope are described.Critical to the success of the P418 stope extraction were the rehabilitation methodology used; extraction strategy modifications to address deteriorating ground; mass firings with multiple directional changes; managing the exposure of backfill of variable strengths; and geotechnical monitoring prior to, during and after extraction.

The Filblast Cyanidation Process incorporates the advantages of intense high shear mixing, high dissolved oxygen concentration and high pressure to achieve extremely rapid gold dissolution rates. This is made possible by the unique design of the Filblast gas shear reactor. The reactor is a rugged and compact in-line device. The outer casing is protected by a polyurethane coating and the internal parts are of wear resistant polymer. The largest unit built to-date has overall dimensions of 1200 mm length by 300 mm diameter and has a capacity of 150 dry tonnes per hour at 40 - 45 per cent solids. Service life at this throughput is at least three months. The process may further be applied to high temperature leaching of refractory gold ores or other metals. Wear resistant metal or ceramic materials would be employed for this duty. Four mines are currently employing the Filblast Process for treating a variety of ore types ranging from highly reactive, almost impossible to treat, pyrrhotite/arsenopyrite to deeply weathered clay ore which forms a highly viscous pulp. The effect of shear thinning has resulted in improved adsorption kinetics resulting in higher carbon loading and reduced soluble gold loss. Total tonnage treated is approximately four million. Operating costs which include leasing and maintenance charges for the Filblast and pump power costs are about 16 cents per tonne. This is equivalent to about ten per cent of savings. Laboratory scale units having capacities up to 30 litres/min are available for test work but laboratory testing techniques so far developed do not accurately reflect the oxygen and cyanide savings which have been achieved in the plant.

Between 1966 and 1976, Australia moved from being a non-producer to a position of meeting more than ten per cent of world nickel demand. New mine developments beginning the early-1990s have the promise of more than doubling the country's world market share - from around eight per cent to perhaps close to 20 per cent. This new surge in activity - the so-called `second nickel boom' - has led to several developments which seem likely to have similar economic impacts to those of the late- 1960s and early-1970s. There are, however, some notable differences this time around. The impact of long distance commuting over the past 30 years has changed the regional development scenario. The gold industry is much stronger in Australia than it was in the late-1960s and this helps to place the importance of new nickel discoveries in a more realistic perspective. As potential players have jockeyed to complete feasibility studies and move into construction and production phases of new long-life mines, established suppliers clearly seem to be taking actions to discourage the newcomers. In what appears to be a classic oligipolistic market situation, the heightening of perceived entry barriers to the industry appears to be a particularly visible strategy undertaken. In the current scenario as well, greater vertical integration among producers appears a significant influence on market power.

Currently, thick single lift, simultaneous multi lift and non simul- taneous multi lift mining methods are adopted as underground flat thick seam excavations in Japan. These are now reliable and effective in increasing the extraction ratio. At Kushiro Colliery of Taiheiyo Coal Mining Co., these three thick seam mining methods have been used. According to the results, if solidification of the top lift goaf is essential, the non simul- taneous multi lift mining method is the most effective in increasing the extraction ratio without minimising productivity of each lift and it points out that further development of this method is necessary.

With the increasing demand for quality-specific ores, coupled to the reality of even more complex minable iron ore reserves, there is a growing need for real-time online material analysis of plant feed and product. For a full system mass balance, the combination of conveyor weight scales, flow and density transmitters are required. This alone does not guarantee product grade. For optimal process control and material blending, real-time online elemental scans in combination with the mass weighting is becoming more than a ‘nice to have’. These elemental scans located at key positions, enable the mining and plant operators to make informed decisions timeously, therefore ensuring product outcomes and optimising operations where material grade and the control thereof are important. Typically, these units follow the mining and primary crushing circuit as well as on the product conveyors, low-grade conveyors and tailings lines. Deployed after the primary crushing circuit, an analyser acts twofold:1. guaranteeing mining production, and2. processing facility feed blends.The analysers on the product conveyors guarantee saleable product. The analysers on the low-grade conveyor and tailings line complete the elemental balance and identify the potential of the low-grade and tailings for future processing. The system losses (accumulation) are calculated to determine the amount of material ‘lost’ during the processing stage which does not report to any of the aforementioned and can be used as a measure of the efficiency of the plant. A further advantage of the real-time online analysis of material is that immediate intervention can be taken in the event that the product is not of saleable product grade requirements. In the Khumani Iron Ore mine, Northern Cape, South Africa, run-of-mine (ROM), product and control analysers were included. Run-of-mine and product stockpiles are certifi ed, low-grade material is not currently directly measured, but calculated from the internal control loops. Iron units are reconciled between product and feed material.

The Skybolt is a new bolt concept, point anchored with resin in large diameter holes of specific sizes 38 mm and 45 mm. The new design achieves the optimum annular spacing required for mixing the resin anchor components which is essential for optimum resin bonding of the bolt to the surrounding rock. This paper explains the load transfer mechanisms between bolt/resin/rock, unique to this bolt concept. It compares the pull-out test results to those of paddle and expansion shell type bolts, and highlights the versatility of Skybolt over existing, currently used, rock support systems and the benefits mine operators can achieve when using the Skybolt.

Unit cycles in mining have not changed for many years. Productivity increases over the past three decades have mainly been achieved by using larger and heavier machines. This investment in size has probably reached the point of diminishing returns and increased productivity in the future will have to be generated by other means. One way of achieving this is through automation of selected unit operations, eg dragline overburden removal, truck haulage, ground support installation and secondary breakage. Although, in the past few years, there has been significant progress in this direction, we are still a long way away from even partial automation - especially in hard rock mines. This paper addresses the technical obstacles facing mining automation; suggests ways by which these obstacles may be overcome and identifies the role of industry groups and research providers in this process.

Most coal mines in Chongqing Area are highly gassy mines and liable to outburst of coal cnd methane. In order to harness mine environment and raise the Prodction capacity, methane predrainage is generally taken as a main preventive measure against outburst by all mines. In the recent ten years, the drainage volume per year has increased from 38.25 million m3 to mote than 100 million m3 with a volume over 12 m3 per tome of coal. In some mines, the draining rate is approaching to 50 percent, the rate in mining districts is up to 60 to 70 percent. The predrainage volume accounts for one fourth of total drainage volume. All these have effectively prevented the occurrence of coal and methane outbursts.This is the current situation of methane predrainage in coal mines in Chongqing area, the methods of predrainage to prevent outbursts and related parametres comprise:1. methods, technologies, supervision and effect of predrainage in different geological and mining conditions,2. the change of methane parametres pre-and post-drainage and the analysis of the effect of methane predrainage to prevent outbursts, and3. ways to improve the effect of methane predrainage.Thus the safety, reliability and production of Changqing Coal Mines will be enhanced.

Pisolitic iron ores (also known as channel iron deposits) are an important resource of medium-grade iron ore in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia. They are a special case of transported pisolitic ferricrust, differing from normal transported ferricrust only in the exceptionally high iron and low alumina content. The pisoids typically range up to 5 mm in diameter with abundant particles of ferruginised fossil wood up to 15 mm in maximum diameter preserved in the sediment. Field observations indicate that pisoliths are commonly initiated by the action of raindrops on iron-rich soil. Pisolites form by the impact of raindrops forming coated beads of ferruginous soil, which after dehydration obtain additional coatings during successive showers. Thick deposits of pisolite that are transported and deposited primarily by sheetwash form in the distal regions of the pediment. A size range limited to particles that may be transported by extremely shallow water characterises the abundant fossil wood fragments. The absence of fine sedimentary layering in pisolitic iron ores is explained by the action of soil-forming processes after deposition, while the major coarse bedding features derive from successive erosional and depositional events in the evolution of the pediment. They are not deposited in channels by rivers which, in arid to semi-arid conditions, typically deposit quartz sands and gravels with characteristic point bars and current bedding, abundant ferruginous granules, but rarely pisoids. However, they may fill abandoned river channels.

To speed up multivariate geostatistical simulation it is common to transform the set of attributes into spatially uncorrelated factors that can be simulated independently. One decorrelation method is the method of minimum/maximum autocorrelation factors (MAF), where a two structure linear model of coregionalisation is assumed. The transformation decorrelates the theoretical model exactly, but the actual data are only approximately decorrelated. The MAF transformation can therefore be seen as a special case of a non-orthogonal approximate diagonaliser of a set of symmetric matrices. A more general approach for approximate joint diagonalisation (AJD) has been developed in the context of blind source separation. For these AJD algorithms no assumptions are made beyond symmetry of the individual matrices and so they can be applied to a family of experimental semivariogram matrices. In their application there are no restrictions on the number of structures in the linear model of coregionalisation (LMC) thus removing one of the conditions placed on the subsequent modelling of the spatial structure of the factors. In this paper the general background for the U-WEDGE AJD method is presented. It is shown that the U-WEDGE method achieves better spatial decorrelation than the MAF method. The factors derived from U-WEDGE are simulated using conditional turning bands simulation and then backtransformed to attribute space.

A number of terrane reconstructions conflict with global plate histories or with data from adjacent regional studies. Paleogeographic maps have ignored terranes thus are over-simplified. This paper represents an attempt to "marry" Mesozoic global plate reconstructions and terrane analysis to produce examples of a "third generation" of global plate tectonic maps. The best approach to global terrane analysis involves intercomparison of all regional data and the evolving global model. Data conflicts within and between terranes and regions must be resolved by a system of relative data reliability "weighting." The most reliable and useful data are those which constrain "departure" (rift) and "arrival" (collision) times. Certain ad hoc decisions aid in the analysis (e.g. only one net vector allowed per plate). The maps that follow summarize Early Mesozoic global tectonic history at three critical junctures: 240 MA (Triassic); 180 MA (Jurassic); and 120 MA (Cretaceous). Due to space limitations, maps drawn at 20 m.y. intervals appear elsewhere. A preliminary Middle Triassic reconstruction is presented in Figure 1. Major plates and continental blocks are labeled; smaller blocks are marked with abbreviations. Examination of Figure 1 indicates the necessity of modeling Triassic tectonics with at least 68 blocks. Spalling- off of microcontinental slivers from Gondwanaland is active some 70 m.y. before the actual breakup of the supercontinent. In the SW sector of the Pacific, the Australian margins were embroidered with several terranes (e.g. Sumba) which eventually rifted away and crossed Tethys. The NW sector at this time included 10 microcontinental chips forming a huge archipelago along the Asian margin. All blocks inboard of Indochina collided by latest Triassic. Terranes of the NE sector include several (e.g. Arctic Alaska) along the North American margin, and at least six large blocks (e.g. Stikinia) drifting SE with the Farallon Plate. The SE sector

The study presented in this paper is based on the Kiirunavaara underground mine located in the northern part of Sweden. The deposit is mined using the sublevel caving (SLC) mining method. This paper briefly reviews the alternative SLC layouts, as well as presents challenges for the application. In Kiirunavaara currently, the traditional SLC design is employed, however, continuous improvement of material transportation systems used in mines generates a need for investigation of the current and future production area layouts in sublevel caving mines. When identifying the potential benefits of the alternative production area layouts, the production targets and effects must be further investigated to understand the benefits and potential effects. In this study, several different layouts have been investigated and evaluated. The designs include different development configurations and orepass infrastructure moved further away from the orebody and still require further investigation.

A cave-to-mill study being conducted at the New Afton block caving operation demonstrated the potential for sensor-based ore sorting equipment to reject waste and improve the grade of feed to the mill. The lack of selectivity and potential for dilution entry associated with the block cave mining method results in many caving operations having to mine and process material that is below cut-off grade at certain stages of production. Online monitoring and bulk sorting systems have the potential to alleviate this problem and improve the productivity of caving operations while reducing energy and water requirements for each tonne of concentrate produced.As part of the cave-to-mill study, the suitability of a range of sensors, such as X-ray fluorescence and induction-type sensors, to sort mine production at the New Afton mine was investigated. Results showed that the discrimination of ore and waste can potentially be carried out by implementing surficial sensors into the material handling system. The study also showed that a combination of sensor outputs could be used to identify a certain ore type so that pre-emptive changes can be made in the mill to improve beneficiation performance. Steel rolling mill product finishing pro cesses gradually become or often already are unsuited for current production and marketing conditions. Indications are made as to what has been done to (i) rectify situations of this kind and, (ii) to reduce both product finishing time and costs. This research is about human development and socio-economic progress of the main mining areas of Chile in the period 1990 - 2007, and especially about the positive effects that mining activity has on poverty reduction and indicators related to the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations. The analysis is doubly interesting, if one considers that the economic and social developments in Chile, recognised and prominent among the Latin American economies and developing nations, are more evident in mining areas as Tarapacß and Antofagasta (northern Chile), which concentrated than more 70 per cent of investments and mining assets in the country. Additionally, the study concludes with methodological reflections for the evaluation of socio-economic impact in the mining industry in developing countries.
