Froth flotation process requires the use of frothers. These important flotation agents are commonly characterised as either æselectiveÆ or æpowerfulÆ and are chosen following general guidelines and verification by laboratory and/or pilot plant tests. Fundamental properties of the flotation frothers have been extensively studied over the last few years. These studies have led to the development of standardised procedures to characterise frothers in terms of their ability to reduce bubble size and to increase foam stability. In this research project, the performance of five frothers in flotation of coal is evaluated and related to the fundamental properties of these agents. Since the recovery of water in the concentrate is closely related to the non-selective transport of solid particles by entrainment, the tested frothers are also assessed in terms of their ability to promote the transport of water towards the froth collection zone, both in absence and in presence of solids.

There are numerous individual gold deposits in the Archaean greenstone belts of Western Australia, but only 26 have productions and/or quoted reserves in excess of 10 tonnes Au. Most gold production has come from mineralization in shear zones, quartz veins or stockworks in volcanic or intrusive host rocks, particularly tholeiitic basalts or dolerites metamorphosed at sub-amphibolite facies (e.g. Kalgoorlie). Significant prod- uction has also come from BIF-hosted deposits (e.g. Hill 50), and large reserves are quoted for mafic hosts at high metamorphic grade (e.g. Big Bell). Most deposits have marked structural control, great depth extension, and are characterized by zoned alteration haloes of pyritization (with Au), K-metasomatism and carbonation. On the regional scale, most larger volcanic- or intrusive-hosted deposits occur in younger (ca 2.8 b.y.) rift-phase green- stones (Norseman-Wiluna Belt). These belts also have a high prospectivity (36 kg Au/km2 of greenstone belt). Younger (ca 3.0 b.y.) and older (ca 3.5 b.y.) platform-phase green stones of the Murchison and Sodthern Cross Provinces and the east Pilbara, respectively, are progressively less prospective (14 kg Au/km2 and 0.8 kg Au/km2, respectively) and also have progressively smaller deposits. The important regional- and local-scale characteristics of most gold deposits can be explained in terms of a metamorphic- replacement model. In this model, metamorphic H2O-CO2 fluids, focussed by faults and shear zones, infiltrated host rocks and deposit gold at 350 + 50¦C and 1-2 kb, largely in response to fluid-wallrock interaction. In many large deposits, gold precipitation was synchronous with sulphidation of Fe-rich host rocks, but the diversity and abundance of smaller deposits reflects the variety of reactions precipitating gold from ubiquitous, auriferous metamorphic fluids. Regional variations in abundance and size of deposits relate to factors such as tectonic setting, alteration styles and possibly source rocks.

The A1 Gold Mine is a Devonian-age narrow vein high-grade gold deposit located 115 km east of Melbourne. The mine operated almost continuously from 1861 to 1992 producing 442 334 ounces of gold (13.8 t) from 530 436 tonnes from primary gold ore tonnes processed at an average recovered grade of 25.9 g/t Au. The A1 dyke was attributed with a yield exceeding 620 000 ounces (19.3 t) of gold (including gold in alluvial and tailings deposits), and was renowned as one of VictoriaÆs premier mines paying considerable dividends. The orebody was principally in a diorite dyke bulge 150 m long, 45 m wide and 700 m deep and was mined via two vertical shafts. The mine site was closed in 1992 and the site was rehabilitated in 1999. In 2008 - 2009, a diamond drilling program identified various extensions to the host dyke lithology and to gold-bearing quartz vein filled fault zones over a 700 m strike length. The outcome of this study was the establishment of a mine geology corridor four times longer in strike length than the original 1970s model. This opens A1 dyke hosted deposit style to exploration outside the historical dyke bulge and provides exploration opportunity for all similar deposits. Construction of the first 3D geological model has developed new insights on the host rock diorite dyke system and identified various extensions to both host stratigraphy and to gold-bearing mineralised structures. Coarse visible gold in quartz vein mineralisation (>30 g/t Au) and medium-grade stockwork mineralisation (8 - 15 g/t Au) has been intersected within 100 m of the surface and up to 300 m along strike of the nearest historical underground workings. At depth it appears that the mineralisation is continuous with the main dyke body with consideration of minor rotation in the strike orientation and limited reverse thrust faulting showing maximum displacement of 10 - 20 m. Along the A1 mine corridor, between two and five parallel dykes are observed at different drill sections. The gold mineralisation is hosted mainly within the dyke rocks, but where the sedimentary rocks are intensely silicified or are xenolith rafts, the gold mineralisation continues across these sedimentary rock blocks. There has been inference to the role of silicified sedimentary rocks as a second ore host and a bounding material for inflections in fault and vein orientations. In the central 150 m long A1 mine dyke bulge, the extremities are demarcated by four to five parallel dyke fingers (referred to as apophyses) going both north and south. These apophyses are clearly observed both vertically and horizontally between levels No 4 and No 9. The dyke fingers entrap sedimentary rock xenoliths and collectively form the A1 dyke æcorridorÆ, which is quite uniform in overall width from the easternmost contact (footwall) to the westernmost contact (hanging wall). Dyke fingers were assumed to coalesce at depth into a single dyke, but recent drilling shows this feature to repeat in several positions with depth and along strike. Key observations are the relationship between gold grade and fracture density, alteration, sulfidation, host rock morphology û relation of contact shape and fault zones. These relationships allow for the classification of prospectivity indicators and geology as a guide to potential extensions of mineralised zones. Mining geology is contributing to the whole-of-mine life planning and development where decline path, stockpile and infrastructure positions are controlled by geology.

A combined reflection seismic and magnetic survey off the south coast of New South Wales has revealed six distinct reflection horizons within the Lower Triassic- Upper Permian sequence, and has enabled the upper part of the Illawarra Coal Measures to be mapped in considerable detail. Large magnetic anomalies in the eastern half of the survey area appear to originate in the Gerringong Volcanic Sequence which forms the magnetic basement in this survey. Small residual anomalies in the western half of the area can be correlated with small scale faulting and folding in the uppert part of the Illawarra Coal Measures, as revealed by the seismic reflection survey. A synclinal axis striking at approximately 55¦ has been mapped near the western margin of the survey area, and areas of faulting and folding have been outlined by com- bined analysis of seismic and magnetic results.

The ever increasing demand on land use has led to large areas of land being considered for development, which because of past mining activities are covered by substantial depths of fill materials. This paper examines the problem faced with the development of land infilled with open cast mining backfill, in predicting the behaviour of the fill upon development. To be able to design foundations suitable to withstand the movements that occur within open cast backfills or design a backfilling operation that produces land suitable for a proposed after development, a means of predicting backfill settlement is required. Factors critical to this prediction are the timing of backfilling operations, the compactive state of the backfill and the inundation of the backfill. The analysis of a considerable quantity of data collected from the monitoring of backfilling operations and backfill movement at a range of open cast coal sites located within the UK has given the authors a better understanding of how open cast backfills behave in terms of long-term creep settlement, collapse settlement and how these are effected by backfill scheduling. This knowledge has been encoded into a program running under Microsoft Windows that enables a user to make settlement predictions for a point, a given section or area or for the whole site. Differential settlements, critical to any development design, can also be determined between any two points taking into consideration the heterogeneous nature of open cast backfills. The program was tested with data from an open cast coal site in the UK. Compaction monitoring during the placement of the backfill material enabled a model of the backfill to be constructed taking into account backfill properties and scheduling. This model, taken as input into the program, enabled future backfill settlement predictions to be made. A comparison is given between these results and actual settlements obtained from a short-term settlement monitoring scheme.

The Chang Jiang Tunnel and Bridge Project, when completed, will provide a fixed link between ShanghaiÆs rapidly developing Pudong District and Chong Ming Island, situated in the Yangtze River delta. The link includes 7.5 km of bored tunnel from the Pudong to the intermediate Changxing Island from where the link comprises viaduct and a cable stayed bridge. The bored section comprises twin 13.7 m internal diameter segmentally lined three-lane highway tunnels. At its deepest point the tunnel will be 55 m below the river. Cross passages will link the two bores for passenger evacuation. Tunnel boring commenced in October 2006 and is scheduled for completion in mid-2009. The paper describes the key features of the design and construction of the bored tunnel by two 14.53 m diameter slurry TBMs and eight cross passages using ground freezing techniques in alluvial sediments. A decision to include light rail below the road deck was taken after the completion of the detailed design. This posed a number of design challenges including passenger evacuation to the road deck, and the redesign of the low point sumps. The various options considered are discussed together with those adopted for construction.

The paper continues an account, begun in a previous paper, of experimental work carried out by the author whilst a member of the metallurgical staff at the Cockle Creek Works. The general method of the description of the plant and works practice adopted previously has been followed.The paper is a short account of the methods used in and the results of an investigation of the fume losses from the various parts of the plant.MEASUREMENT OF VOLUMETwo independent methods were used. The first depended on a number of pitot-tube measurements of velocity. These readings were taken in the stacks leading from the various furnaces at a considerable height above the ground so as to obtain as regular conditions as possible at the points where the readings were taken.Three openings were made in each stack and the pitot tube inserted into each opening in turn and readings taken at the centres of imaginary areas of equal size. The average velocity in the stack was thus obtained.After four tests had been made at the smelter stack, which removed the gases from all blast furnaces in use, the centre of velocity of the gases for each test was calculated and was found to be practically constant in position. The previous procedure was varied in subsequent tests on this stack by taking a succession of readings at the centre of velocity instead of at various points...

Modern gold production from the Gympie Goldfield commenced in 1995 with the first production from the Monkland Mine. The primary ore target was the 2.5 m wide Inglewood Fault ore zone, which was initially mined using traditional narrow-vein shrink stoping. This manuallyintensive mining method allowed the mine to re-open with minimal capital cost, however the trade off was low productivity and high operating costs. As the mine has developed, access through 100-year-old, timber-lined, small shafts, and the high cost of delineating reserves, has restricted modernisation of the operations. In early-2000 a stockwork lode was discovered adjacent to the existing workings with an economic width of 40 m. In order to maximise the benefit of such an orebody, mining needed to be approached in a new way. This paper summarises the many changes implemented at the Monkland Mine, including the necessary cultural change, implementing long-hole stoping, de-bottlenecking and the application of mechanisation. The result has been a significant improvement in safety performance, higher productivity and a more secure future for all those involved in the project.

"A key component of any geometallurgical investigation involves being able to predict element or mineral recoveries from simplified input data such as bulk chemistry and/or mineralogy. This relies on the metallurgist having access to accurate information regarding the chemistry of the ore and gangue minerals as well as the likely impact on processing/extraction caused by the impurities (present either as gangue or as substitutional impurities). In this study the chemical properties of two commercially important uranium minerals, brannerite (U4+Ti2O6), and uraninite (U4+O2), were characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Significant levels of impurities were present in both samples with the uranium minerals deviating significantly from their ideal chemical formulae. Differences in chemistry were due to: cationic substitution decay of the uranium isotopes into radiogenic lead and other daughter products mixed uranium oxidation states post-depositional alteration.As well, the brannerite sample showed evidence of significant radiation-induced metamictisation. Leach tests to measure the ease of extraction of uranium from both samples were conducted over a wide range of conditions (temperature, acid concentration and oxidant concentration). For uraninite, the lower U dissolution rates observed in the natural sample compared to a synthetic UO2 sample were directly attributed to the presence of impurities. For brannerite, significant metamictisation of the natural sample led to enhanced U extraction rates compared to a heat treated fully crystalline sample. This study highlights the importance of detailed mineralogical characterisation studies in any uranium process mineralogy investigation as the compositional, textural and microstructural aspects of the main uranium phases present will likely play an important role in any process to extract uranium.CITATION:Ram, R, Charalambous, F, McMaster, S, Pownceby, M I, Tardio, J and Bhargava, S, 2013. "Based on solid simulation material research, the simulation conditions for methane and coal solid-gas coupling were obtained using solid-fluid coupling theory. Using sand as the aggregate and paraffin and oil as the cementing agents, a material suitable for solid-gas coupling simulation was developed. A permeability testing instrument was also developed, and the compressive strength, brittleness parameters and seepage velocity of material were tested with different aggregates. The results showed that as the paraffin content increased, the compressive strength of the material increased but the permeability decreased. The oil removed the drawback of intensely changing material compressive strength. By setting a different ratio of aggregate to cementing agent, it can simulate rocks with different strengths and permeability. Applying the material to a mining simulation experiment revealed a relationship between methane seepage velocity and overlying strata movement. By extracting pressure relief gas from Shanxi Tianchi coalmine drainage, the authors found that the mining fissure zone was a storage area of pressure relief gas, and a gas drainage system can be placed to achieve good results. For suitable production planning in an open pit mine, and also to carry out the optimisation process during the mining production cycle, prediction of fragment size distribution is required prior to carrying out the blasting operation. For this purpose, many prediction models, such as empirical models, were presented. The proficiency of these models differs in various conditions and mines. Therefore, in this paper the most important models, including SveDeFo, Kuz-Ram, CZM, Modified Kuz-Ram in 2005, Kuznestsov-Cunningham-Ouchterlony (KCO) and also Gheibie et al, were examined by the information of 20 blasts in Gol-Gohar iron ore mine. Fourteen images were taken on average for each blast. For image processing analysis Split-Desktop software was used. After examination, it was understood that none of the available empirical fragmentation models had presented acceptable performance, except the Kuz-Ram model for magnetite ore, which had somewhat acceptable results. However, this model for blasting patterns in hematite presented unsuitable results. Examination and comparison of two important distribution functions, Rosin-Rammler and Swebrec, were carried out and it was observed that the performance of Swebrec for fines was far better than Rosin-Rammler. The design of composite materials for wear resistant service aims at com- bining two or more materials in such a way as to achieve unique and useful properties not generally available in any single homogeneous material. Properties and applications are presented of what might be described as a new generation of wear resistant materials, namely, metallic and part- metallic composites suitable for use in the high abrasion/moderate impact environment encountered in the crushing and screening of ore. Significant cost performance benefit can result from the use of such materials and several specific case histories are discussed. Some promising new developments, utilis- inn white iron and rubber, as yet in the field testing stage, are reviewed. Further comments are offered foreshadow- ing new composite developments, as yet untried but which appear to h,uve merit.

Brief summary of results obtained by a French-Japanese cooperative study on the bottom of trenches around Japan. The geophysical prospection, multi beam echo sounding and direct observation with submersible dives of the trench bottom clarified the details of the subduction of oceanic plates. It may be noted, among many new facts found: 1. The subduction and geologic structure resulted from the process is different according to the nature of subducting oceanic plate, and the geology of the land behind the trench. Thus the Nankai trough characterized by the developpement of accretionary prisms is contrasted to that of the Japan Trench where the basement rocks are exposed on the land side cliff of the trench wall. 2. The compressional tectonic situation prevailing in the trench bottom provokes the venting, along the fissures on the bottom, of water contained in sediments. Hydrocarbons contained in the sediments are comming out with water and give nutrients for bacteria. Clams, tube warms, sea slugs and shrimps are taking these bacteria as their food and biological communities with exceptionally dense population for the deep sea of more than 3000 meters in depth are formed on the field of accretionary prism and wall of the land side cliff. 3. An intense compressional tectonic field resulted from the subduction is inducing the transition from the subduction of oceanic plate to the collision of a part of the plate to the continental plate.

This paper describes a new mine backfill method based on a newly invented binder with several years of test results from laboratory and on- site applications. The new binder has several advantages over traditional Portland and slag cement binders. One tonne of the new binder can replace two to three tonne of Portland cement when used to consolidate backfill and can result in the same compressive strength within seven days. When comparing backfill slurries of the same pulp density, the new binder attains more volume of in-place backfill mass than Portland cement because of the high crystallisation of water, resulting in tightly filled stopes. The crystallisation of the water provides for less or no de- watering in the backfill stope and easier transportation of the backfill slurry. Pastefill performance can be achieved by using pulp densities typical of a hydraulic backfill and the new binder, all the while transporting with the same ease of hydraulic fill.

In an environment of decreasing ore grade, increasing costs and uncertainty with respect to commodity prices, the industry could benefit from evaluating alternative technologies and innovative circuit configurations. The flexible circuit approach suggests that the design of grinding circuits can be adapted to changes in feed properties and economic conditions. Advances in modelling and simulation are enabling metallurgists to predict the performance of more complex circuit configurations with increased confidence. Ore variability information and processing costs may be used as modelling inputs to determine the optimum processing conditions at a given time. A case study has been completed demonstrating the value of combining a flexible circuit with a model-based optimisation of the process. Ore properties and equipment performance data obtained in operating plants have been used to model and simulate flexible circuit configurations.This paper explores strategies to introduce flexibility to existing circuit configurations when processing ores with high variability. Multicomponent models incorporated in the model developers’ kit (MDK) allow the simulation of more complex and flexible circuits. This capability enables demonstration of the potential to enhance metal production through adapting processing routes according to the ore type being processed. The simulation of different flow sheet configurations allowed the definition of the best option for maintaining the metal production when treating lower grade ores, highlighting the advantages of flexible circuit configurations compared with a one-process-fits-all approach.CITATION:Foggiatto, B, Hilden, M M and Powell, M S, 2014. The system combines a commercially available CADD system with a commercially available mining/geological package. The methodology used in the establishment of the combined system, the fea- tures of the system and the current status of development are discussed.

As Olympic Dam rapidly expands into the Southern Mine Area (SMA) the Mine Geology team has concurrently ramped up underground diamond drilling to sustain rates of above 175 km/a. With >10 underground rigs double-shifting, traditional paper sections used for the management of drill programs were no longer optimal due to scale of operations. An opportunity was identified to modernise monitoring of all underground diamond drill programs, through the integration of logged copper sulfide estimates with Olympic Dam’s first-fully integrated deposit-scale geological model in Leapfrog Geo. This paper describes the transition within the Mine Geology team from reliance on 2D paper sections, towards near-real time 3D geological modelling for optimising end-of-hole decisions in the field. This transition was enabled by innovative database solutions informing locally constrained implicit models, limited by a distance buffer around active underground fan drilling. Due to the high volume of historic drilling, there were significant computational challenges with the implementation of daily production style implicit models at Olympic Dam and initial testing of regular updates to implicit gradeshells and sulfide domains required in excess of 12 hrs to run. The enabling solution was to optimise the interfaces between the AcQuire database, Deswik MDM and Leapfrog Geo to create a dynamic, streamlined workflow that was easily completed by Mine Geologists in accordance with daily production duties. Geologists are now building rapid implicit models for a range of variables from an integrated data set of logged sulfide estimates and existing assays, spatially constrained by 150 m buffers around active drilling using a unique drill fan identifier flagged during the planning phase. Once the live-implicit models are updated, they are exported for visualisation on field tablets to be used during logging and core checks at the start and end of every shift. To manage the risk of ‘going digital’ interpretation remains at the forefront of the drill section close-out process, with Mine Geologists critically reviewing the finished sections on a standardised template with new learnings wireframed and communicated to stakeholders. The Live Field Model has enabled a step-change in the geological effectiveness of diamond drilling, reducing over – and under-drilling ore-waste at Olympic Dam continuing to push drilling effectiveness towards 20 per cent of intercepts >2 per cent Cu. In addition, upside or risk identified during the proactive management of drilling execution can be rapidly capitalised or mitigated.

Minerals processing operations use a significant quantity of fossil carbon to provide energy and as reductant. Greenhouse gas emissions from the use of this fossil carbon contribute to the global increase in anthropogenic CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. In the spirit of fostering thinking about a step change in this situation, this paper explores opportunities for the use of sustainable carbon from biomass sources in a range of mineral processing operations. The exploration shows that many common processes are contenders for fossil carbon replacement and that feasible scientific research by minerals processing technologists would add to deeper understanding of the potential for a sustainable bio-carbon based industry. It is also shown that there are many dilemmas on the social, environmental and economic fronts to be solved before a biomass based industry could become a reality.

Most of the operating steelmaking capacity currently relies on conventional, coal-based steelmaking processes. Currently, direct reduced iron (DRI) is only produced in regions where energy is available at low cost. To align with net-zero emissions goals, steelmaking capacity must transition to loweremissions steelmaking technology. Direct reduction of iron ore will get one of the preferred methods in the future due to its high technology readiness. New reduction technologies include hydrogenbased direct reduction processes. To ensure optimal efficiency during DRI production and to cope with newly developed technologies, processes need to be monitored more frequently and accurate. Traditionally quality control of raw materials and DRI has relied on time consuming physical testing, wet chemistry or the analysis of the elemental composition. The mineralogy of DRI that defines its properties is not frequently monitored. Process monitoring and quality control of DRI is possible by using modern X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. In addition to the metallic iron content (Femet), metallisation (Metn) and the total carbon content (Ctot), XRD analysis also identifies the overall mineralogical phase composition. This allows additional information about the reduction process and enables fast counteractions on changing raw material mixtures. The benefits of the quantitative determination of the phase composition and the calculation of process critical parameters to produce DRI will be demonstrated with a case study

This paper puts the view that, for one gold deposit in Victoria at least, the Australasian Code for the Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources is severely deficient. The author questions whether or not the Code constrains the proper dissemination of information relevant to resource valuation. The author offers a view about the estimation of inferred resources, and provides data believed pertinent to the proper valuation of Ballarat Goldfields Ltd Ballarat East Project.
