Currently an Australian Standard for tunnel fire safety is being developed for road and rail tunnels. Other local guidance relating to tunnel fire safety that has recently become available includes publications by both the Roads and Traffic Authority and RailCorp of New South Wales. Internationally, the World Road Congress has completed its 2004 - 2007 cycle, which has resulted in a number of publications. International developments in rail guidance include a new European Standard regarding fire safety in railway tunnels that will come into effect in July 2008. In addition, the National Fire Protection Association committee NFPA 130 are in the process of revising their standard for fixed guideway transit and passenger rail systems, which is due for publication in late 2009. This paper outlines the status of these and other recently published relevant local and international fire safety guidelines and their implications for tunnel projects in Australia.

What is special about being a female mine manager? We do not believe that the challenge is greater for women in managing a mine compared to managerial positions in other male-dominated businesses. The challenge lies in the fact that it is a male-dominated business. Being a leader belonging to a minority creates a situation where competence not only lies in having technical knowledge or general leadership characteristics, but also in acquiring an understanding of the male norm and being able to behave and communicate effectively in the organisation.In order to move towards a better gender balance at senior levels it is important to set measurable objectives on desirable proportions between women and men at management levels within the company. Focus and action are required to achieve this goal. At LKAB, the current target is to reach 25 per cent women in the total workforce by 2020. To date, LKAB has reached 19.4 per cent women in the total workforce, and the number of women in management positions is 19.9 per cent.It is of vital importance to create a non-discriminating working environment to achieve equal opportunities at the workplace, to be able to use the whole workforce as a resource for recruitment of professionals and managers, thereby improving decision-making, productivity, efficiency and profitability.Women as mine managers is not a utopia, but rather an effect of long-term investments in actions that result in equal opportunities for all employees.CITATION:Quinteiro, M and Sundqvist, Å, 2016. The local cumulative distribution function (lcdf) of a selective mine unit (SMU) can be estimated by conditional simulations using the statistics derived from the sample points, generating multiple equally probable scenarios. Conditional simulations permit the evaluation of the lcdf at any support, taking into account the spatial variability, ie the variogram, and the two statistical moments, mean and variance, of the conditioning samples. The SMU ore losses and dilution depend on the mining method and mining equipment selectiveness that, in its turn, depends on the predicted block size. A new approach to predict ore loss and dilution was developed in this study. Monte Carlo simulation is used to randomly generate a grade value derived from the lcdf at the mining stage (Zs_mc(t)) in order to make a decision about the SMU destination, ie processing plant (ORE) or waste dump (WASTE). If Zs_mc(t) is lower or equal to the cut-off (Z_cut-off) the block is ORE and, conversely, if Zs_mc(t) is higher than the cut-off (Z_cut-off) the block is WASTE. Considering these binary destinations ORE/WASTE, at the mining time t, and combining each realisation of the simulated random function Zcs_i (X), there are four possibilities for each SMU simulated value: 1. the block was simulated as ore and is actually ore (OO), 2. the block was simulated as ore and is actually waste (OW),3. the block was simulated as waste and is actually ore (WO), and 4. the block was simulated as waste and is actually waste (WW).The dilution factor is given by possibility 3 (WO), while the ore loss factor is represented by possibility 2 (OW). These results comprise the classical classification and reconciliation plots used in the mining industry. The new procedure proposed in this paper is based on the use of all the equally probable simulations to define the ore loss and dilution factors. An application of this methodology was carried out at Vale's iron mine in Brazil. The grade of silica was simulated and 50 multiple equally probable 3D models were generated. The mean and the standard deviation of the ore tonnage (OO + WO) for the 50 realisations, was 233 Mt and 0.5 Mt, respectively. The mean grade increased for the diluted ore (OO + WO) as well as their respective coefficient of variation (CV). The CV increases from 62 per cent in the undiluted ore (OO), to 101 per cent in the ore, considering the dilution factor (OO + WO). The mean ore loss (OW) was 10 Mt and the waste tonnage dilution (WO) was 9 Mt.

Radio Detection and Ranging is an active form of remote sensing. The-imaging system sends out a source of electromagnetic energy to 'illuminate' the terrain and then records the energy returned. The wavelengths used by radar are in the microwave region and vary from a few millimetres to about a metre. Radar systems are independent of lighting conditions and weather. In addition, targets may be illuminated in the optimum direction to enhance features of interest. New Zealand was one of the principal investigators on the Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-B) experiment, part of the payload on Challenger Mission 41-G in October 1984. Data collected over New Zealand was restricted to two very poor quality optical images and one poor quality digital data take. The digital image covered the ranges between the Hawke Bay-Wairoa Basin and the Volcanic Plateau. Variations of texture in this image frequently were indicative of variations in lithology and induration. The image also clearly depicted major faults where these had had a significant effect on the topography.

The Resource Management Act 1991 represented an innovative and unique piece of planning and environmental legislation when it was introduced. Since the Act was passed into law in 1991 it has been subject to nine amendments, many of which were of the ætinkerÆ variety. These amendments recognise that the Act has not been as successful in providing the æone-stop shopÆ for resource users that the Act was hoped to be. The latest and most significant attempt at changing the Act was the Resource Management Amendment Act 2003. The amendments made by the Amendment Act have proved to be largely unsuccessful in achieving any significant changes to the way resources are managed in New Zealand, and have failed to address many of the concerns which drove the original Resource Management Amendment Bill in 1999. The recent decision to discontinue further investment in Project Aqua has once again placed the Act in the spotlight as a significant hand-brake on major projects. This particular event has led to yet another review to be undertaken this year. The review will focus on five key areas:   1.   achieving the right balance of national and local interests; 2.   improving the design and process for local policy formulation; 3.   improving the consent decision making process; 4.   allocation of natural resources (water, air and geothermal); and 5.   supporting measures for building capacity and promoting best practice and implementation at the local authority level.  It is important for the business community and the mining industry in particular to seize the opportunity that this review provides to make sure that any amendments undertaken as a result of the review achieve the aims listed above. The review needs to be considered in light of the current regime for the management of natural resources in New Zealand. In addition to the Resource Management Act 1991, the Crown Minerals Act 1991 and the Building Act 1991, which form the core resource statutes in New Zealand, there have been other developments affecting the regime. Special legislation over and above the Resource Management Act 1991 has been enacted to protect the Hauraki Gulf and special legislation is currently being considered to protect the Waitakere Ranges in Auckland. In the Hauraki District mining is prohibited in some areas and a plan change mechanism is specified as the appropriate tool to use in the event a mineral resource is to be developed in those areas. The current review is a further opportunity to remedy the inadequacies of the Act.

Andesites are a major source of aggregate for much of the North Island of New Zealand. There are regional differences with respect to some important properties of the andesites. Some are reactive with cement and are designated as potentially deleterious or deleterious by the concrete industry. Other andesites, particularly those that are slightly altered or weathered, have rather high Plasticity or Clay Indices and perform poorly in road construction.   The performance of the andesites has been investigated and can be shown to be determined by: +        the chemistry of the rock which in turn determines the chemistry of the glass in the rock; +        the presence of large amounts of groundmass glass in the rock; and +        the nature of the superimposed alteration processes. Environment of extrusion and how rapidly the rock has been cooled or chilled are also important as they determine the fabric of the rock and how much glass will be present in the rock.   There are three main types of alteration that affect the quality of the aggregate: 1.   hydrothermal alteration, 2.   late magmatic alteration associated with the devitrification of glass, and 3.   weathering.   Each of these alteration types produces different alteration minerals. In fresh andesites the devitrification of glass has an important affect on the rockÆs properties. The Taranaki andesites are shown to have unusually (in comparison with other North Island andesites) high Na2O contents, held in the groundmass glass, which is the fundamental reason for the high alkali û silica reactivity of these andesites.

Geological Parameters Controlling the Improvement of Manufactured Sand Using Vertical Shaft Impact Crushers Instead of Cone Crushers Natural sand is a limited resource. In Sweden the total use of natural sand and gravel is around 20 million tonnes per year and the goal is to halve the use of this resource in the near future. Most of this natural sand is used for concrete production, so the consequence of this goal is that more and more concrete must be produced with manufactured sand. The bedrock of Sweden consists mainly of granites and gneisses, rock types mainly composed of various amounts of quartz, feldspar and mica. Manufactured sand from these materials generally contains rather flaky and elongated grains, and there are few types of granite that can be used as manufactured sand in concrete without increasing the amount of cement by eight to ten per cent. A Vertical Shaft Impact crusher (VSI) is commonly used to improve the shape of coarse aggregate particles. Research has shown that it is even possible to improve the shape in aggregate fractions less than 1 mm for some rock types. The aim of this project was to investigate which geological parameters control the improvement of manufactured sand when using VSI-crushers instead of the traditionally used cone crusher. In order to do this eight rock types of granitic composition were investigated. The selection of rock materials for the tests was based on grain size and mica content. A 4 - 8 mm fraction of each material was used for the tests. The characterisation of the shape of the material was performed using image analysis applied on microscopic images. The results showed that the VSI-crusher had improved the shape of all materials down to 0.036 mm, except for one rock sample. According to these results granites with low mica content and relatively high content of feldspars have the best prerequisites to produce manufactured sand for concrete with suitable geometric characteristics, and if these materials are crushed with a VSI crusher they almost show the same characteristics as natural sand.

Early-Archaean (3.26 Ga) volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits located within the low strain and sub-prehnite-pumpellyite metamorphic-grade Strelley greenstone belt, East Pilbara, Western Australia, contain exceptionally well preserved sulphide textures which are directly analogous to those of sulphide chimneys formed by black smokers at present day submarine hydrothermal vents. The VMS deposits are associated with seafloor alteration zones in and below silica-carbonate laminites, at the top of tholeiitic to calc-alkaline intermediate and felsic rocks. VMS mineralisation comprises stratabound Zn-rich sulphide lenses with significant Cu and barite, and variable Pb and Ag, above Cu-rich stringer zones, all of which are similar to Phanerozoic polymetallic or Kuroko VMS deposits. Sulphide-sulphate mineralisation implicates hydrothermal discharge into sulphate-bearing ocean waters, ruling out a globally anoxic Archaean hydrosphere. The volcanic rocks and co-magmatic sub-volcanic intrusion hosting the VMS deposits are characterised by the conjunction of LILE>LREE>HREE, and Phanerozoic La/Yb with negative normalised anomalies of Nb, P and Ti, consistent with derivation via subduction zone hydrous metasomatism fusing the mantle lithosphere.

In the context of sustainable development, the Minerals Council of Australia (2010) states that 'investments in minerals projects should be financially profitable, technically appropriate, environmentally sound and socially responsible'. In other words, the business of mining can only be sustained if these criteria are met.   Science and technology plays a major role in all four of these criteria. This paper will present the technology and innovation emerging from the Minerals Down Under National Research Flagship which brings together CSIRO and more than ten of Australia's leading universities to work with industry to drive efficiency, productivity and environmental performance. This work is required if the Australian minerals sector is to thrive and continue to deliver national benefit in the face of increased global competition, declining ore grades, depleting ore deposits, increasingly constrained national resources (land, energy, water and people) and changing societal expectations.   Science and technology to reduce emissions and water use, discover greenfields resources, enable deeper mining operations and transform mineral processing are described. Technology is presented as an enabler of sustainability: a means to this end but not as an end in its own right.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences' Mineral Resources Programme is currently carrying out research under two major projects:   HAREM (Hauraki Andesite Rhyolite Epithennal Mineralisation) The Hauraki Goldfield lies within a belt of andesite-dacite-rhyolite volcanics of Miocene Pliocene age which is underlain by a basement of Mesozoic greywacke. It contains some 50 separate epithermal gold deposits and is a world-class gold and silver producer. The HAREM project is aimed at improving models of the epithermal gold mineralisation, and to better understand the processes and controls of origin, transport and deposition of the gold.   MARGO - (Marlborough Gold) The MARGO project is aimed at determining the geological factors that controlled the formation of the Mesozoic mesothermal gold-antimony-tungsten deposits in the Marlborough Schist belt. Following reconnaissance work on 12 deposits, our current work is concentrated on deposits in the Wakamarina valley.

Predictive maintenance (also known as ‘condition/health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:- reduces equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetime- determines the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis- avoids the unnecessary costs of maintenance and unexpected failures- improves safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data is first preprocessed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques; it is then combined with predictive modelling techniques, such as machine learning, to estimate equipment health.Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be used in an operational setting within an IT environment, such as a server or cloud. Alternatively, algorithms may be implemented in an embedded system directly on the equipment, allowing for faster response times and significantly reducing the amount of data sent over the network.CITATION:Willingham, D and Xie, Y, 2017. The objective of the draw strategy in a caving mine is to maximise economic return by minimising waste dilution3 and maximising ore recovery4. The draw strategy must also include suitable controls for air blast and mud rush hazards and is highly constrained until continuous cave propagation has been achieved. This paper details a three-year project at the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM), which used cave flow simulation software to develop a draw strategy that increased the mine value by 32 per cent.Dilution and ore loss can be significant in sublevel cave (SLC) operations and result in poor recovery and considerable economic losses. To minimise dilution and ore loss, cellular automata software was used to simulate cave flow over the mine life. The optimisation project required mining footprints for various cut-off grades to be developed. Draw strategies for each mine footprint were then generated using a range of shut-off grades. Economic assessment of each scenario was then conducted to determine the mine footprint and corresponding draw strategy that generated the highest NPV (net present value). The iterative simulation process was improved by developing automated software functions in the flow modelling software to reduce time taken to generate and assess life-of-mine (LOM) draw strategy scenarios.In addition to improving the NPV of the mine, the optimisation project also enabled a decrease in the mine cut-off grade which increased the ore reserve and extended the mine life. Overall, an iterative process of mine planning, cave simulation, economic evaluation and geotechnical analysis was used to significantly increase the economic return of the SLC whilst ensuring caving risks were controlled to an acceptable level.CITATION:Campbell, A D and Power, G R, 2016. The Golden Cross mine is a Joint Venture between Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited, as Manager, and Viking Mining Limited. The mine is targeting Zero Lost Time Accidents as a goal.   The Golden Cross operation produces gold and silver from both underground and open pit. The mine is based on an epithermal gold-silver deposit. Treatment of ore is on a campaign basis for each ore type (i.e. underground or open pit). Milling is conventional SAG Mill and Ball Mill grinding circuit followed by carbon in pulp recovery of gold and silver. All tailing materials are treated through the Cyanisorb process to reduce cyanide levels prior to being discharged into the tailings dam.

RME has a vision for a new mill operational paradigm made possible by RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System. This vision can be moved forward into reality at any time with or without guidance from recent development in measurement and predictive modelling tools.Some new liner designs can degrade SAG mill performance because of mill volume loss, ball strike (rotational speed limitations) and other issues often brought about by optimising liners for life and without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences. Freshly relined mills can initially produce as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the linersÆ wear life. RMEÆs proposition is to design new liners for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent changes of liners but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance. In other words, mill liner profiles and mill relining speed become key operational controls and not simply æmust doÆ maintenance functions. Taken to the extreme, liner profiles may prove capable of ætuningÆ a grinding plant for maximum profitability in any metal price environment. This paper provides an update regarding RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System technologies and outlines RMEÆs vision of a æliner profile versus profitabilityÆ model as a function of metal price, developed intuitively or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum commercial outcome, off-line in the virtual world, before committing to an expensive liner experiment.

It has been thought in the past that New Zealand had ample coal reserves, able to provide fossil fuel supplies well into the future. Such is not the case and every effort must be made to achieve the highest possible extraction rate in all new coal mining ventures. While the relative cost and availability of completion or fuels has been largely responsible for the slow growth of coal production in the past, a world shortage of fuels has given coal a new importance and required better utilisation of coal reserves. New mining ventures in thick-seam coal deposits cannot be planned and designed without geotechnical investigations designed to provide information required by the mining engineer and analyst. Finite element analysis of mine workings may provide essential information on the optimisation of mining techniques and the design of underground support and roadway shapes.

The International Symposium-cum-Workshop on Management andControl of High Gas Emissions and Outbursts in Underground CoalMines was held in Wollongong in March 1995. Coverage of high gasemissions was virtually confined to instantaneous outburst implications, essentially seam gas pre-drainage. Globally, instantaneous outbursts have been known for 150 years, andthe first Australian outburst occurred in 1895 and Australian occurrences and mines affected have increased since. Few significant coal producing countries are unaffected. The coals affected range in rank from lignites to anthracites. Geological disturbances are the most likely environments for occurrences. The most likely mining geometry is of virgin headings, with some occurrences on longwalls and in other situations. Widespread research into many aspects of the problem has yet to produce a generally accepted explanation. Explosive inducement is a well-known control. Apparently high advance rates increase face gassiness and create higher stress abutments, increasing proneness. The most popular preventive measure, pre-drainage of virgin coal ahead of faces has produced highly successful very long hole drilling performances but without the precision necessary for accurate geometric hole patterns, despite quite sophisticated drilling equipment and hole surveying instruments. For the future, more precise degasification is sought, even from the surface, together with rapid face coal gassiness assessments to confirm lowering below threshold values, as well as other proneness lowering measures, perhaps related to new heading and longwall geometries and to new equipment to provide them. But above all, safe management plans are required for each operation, to safeguard the miners and their working environments, and thus to protect underground coal mining from this mounting threatening problem.

In eastern China, most of the copper skarn deposits occur in folded troughs which are controlled by the EW-trending faulted fold systems (the Pal-Asian geotectonic domain), and the NNE-trending rift or fault zones (the Marginal-Pacific geotectonic domain), particularly the later. From the north to the south, there are four troughs hosting the main copper skarn deposits in eastern China: the Yanliao Trough, the Yangzi River Trough, The Qiantang-Yuanshui Trough and the Zichen Trough. There are more than 30 copper skarn deposits in eastern China, and ore reserves of each deposit are between 30 to 100 Mt with average grades over 1% Cu.    Most of the large copper skarn deposit-related intrusions are Mesozoic in age (170 to 100 Ma) and were emplaced during the Yanshanian Movement. Outwards from the intrusion bodies, both the skarn alteration and mineralisation show certain patterns of zonation. Mineral assemblages indicate a relatively high oxidisation state during metasomatic alteration and mineralisation. Sulphur isotopic work indicates that most d34S values of the sulphides are between ~4 to 3ë suggesting a common magmatic sulphur source. Fluid inclusion and oxygen isotopic studies suggest that early-stage fluid shows magma-related fluid characteristics although meteoric water was involved during late-stage alteration.

Building and Maintaining Community Relationships   In mining terms, the town of Waihi is distinctive with the Martha mine situated right in the heart of the town. MarthaÆs central location and other mining activity nearby means there is an increased community focus on the happenings at the mine and the effects and impacts of mining. While WaihiÆs proximity to the mine is unique, all mines have a community context that they operate within.   Issues of proximity simply heighten awareness and emphasise the need for building and maintaining good community relationships. In the three years we have been working alongside the Waihi community, we have worked together with concerned and supportive residents, representatives of Newmont Waihi Gold and representatives of Hauraki District Council, to develop a collaborative framework for addressing the economic, social, environmental, cultural and spiritual wellbeing of the people of Waihi. This could not have occurred without the genuine commitment of all participants.   This collaborative focus has resulted in some tangible progress in Waihi which, in part, stems from people taking an interest in the town because the town is taking an interest in itself. As we have worked and learned within the process of building and maintaining a collaborative and sustainable community environment, we have tried to adhere to a philosophy and a set of basic principles. We believe that this approach, combined with a teachable skill set, helped to create the opportunity to develop a truly collaborative community environment which continues to grow. Our paper will describe this philosophy, these principles and the skill set that we have applied.   The application of the process in Waihi has resulted in a series of outcomes unique to Waihi. These outcomes include formation of the Waihi Community Vision committee, the Vision Waihi Trust and the subgroups set up to further the interests of particular groups, for the collective benefit of all the community.   Based on our experience of other situations, and on the way the Waihi process has developed, we believe that the identified principles and skills can be transported and used in other cultures and contexts. While the resultant outcomes may differ, the underlying principles will still apply. Progress will come from creating a sustainable environment within which the community (including residents, industry and regulatory authority) can determine its own internal relationships and the vibrant growing sense it has of itself.
