The transition from exploration to feasibility is a stage in the development of mineral resource projects that is frequently not handled well. The transition marks a point in the project development process where resource evaluation priorities change significantly from the discovery of mineralisation and the rapid assessment of the potential tenor of the mineralised system, to the detailed assessment of the deposit.   Information used in the exploration process tends to be of a qualitative or theoretical nature initially, but gradually becomes more quantitative in character as geological knowledge relating to individual prospects grows.   The transition from discovery and rapid exploration of a new deposit occurs at a relatively early stage in project development, coinciding with the first attempt to prepare a resource estimate for the deposit. Fundamental assumptions regarding both structural and grade continuity and uncertainty inherent in existing information need to be made so that they themselves may be addressed during the collection of additional data.   The effective commencement of feasibility studies involve the introduction of new accountabilities either as a result of appointment of a project manager, and through needing to be able to quantify: ò     the quality of data being collected for resource evaluation purposes; ò     confidence associated with resource estimates; and ò     the need to develop an audit trail for the project, required to make the resource evaluation decision-making process as transparent as possible.   Quality assurance is a concept to which exploration geologists have frequently had little exposure. Being able to demonstrate the quality of data used in feasibility studies is, however, a crucial component of the overall risk management and reduction.   Development of a transparent audit trail for data assists in demonstrating the quality of data which is frequently perceived to translate directly to confidence inherent in resource estimates.   Establishing procedures for geological data collection and management also provides a more reliable framework for making decisions that impact on project execution, again resulting in improved confidence in resource estimates and associated geoscientific data.   Regular, independent technical audits, in principle similar to audits conducted for the ongoing certification of standards compliant quality assurance systems, are a major, positive factor in effective project management and execution.   Information used in project evaluation, feasibility and development must be based on facts. Facts are effectively observations that are ideally made systematically, recorded in a systematic manner, and by being collected effectively are not subject to change.   Effectively managing the transition from exploration to resource evaluation, feasibility and project development involves recognising the nature of changes in the nature, detail and scope of geoscientific data required at each stage of project development. In doing so it is essential to: ò     recognise when the change occurs (as early as preparation of the initial resource estimate for a project); ò     accept that the change may not be gradual; and, ò     ensure that the project evaluation team is adequately resourced.   These objectives require recognition of the value of previous experience and the need to instill a true team approach amongst both staff and contractors associated with the project. Regular formal and informal communications between staff, contractors and other stakeholders in the project are an essential tool in ensuring personnel are aware of factors affecting their role in the project.

Owing to improvements in computer capacity, it is now possible to undertake fully coupled or partially coupled, three-dimensional (3D) hydromechanical Finite Element (FE) simulation of mines, including explicit representations of large numbers of discontinuities. The analysis requires fewer assumptions than uncoupled analysis or two-dimensional (2D) analysis, but may require a change in how hydrological data is collected. The way hydrological data is incorporated in stability assessment and the approach to uncertainty in hydrological information also requires discussion. The current procedures for this type of analysis are discussed, along with some practical difficulties and teachings from early applications. A work flow for integration of 3D hydromechanical modelling with pit planning and some considerations for the management of uncertain data are also proposed.

ZINIFEX Century Mine is a zinc, lead and silver concentrate producer. Flotation is the primary method of minerals separation in this circuit. The flotation circuit is quite large with 79 flotation cells. The levels in each of these interconnected cells are controlled at more than 45 level control stations. Due to the multivariable interaction throughout the circuit, good level control was found to be difficult to achieve by just using normal Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control. As a first step in advanced process control, the FloatStar Level Stabiliser, a multivariable controller developed specifically for flotation circuits, has been commissioned at Century mine to solve the level control problems. The first section of this paper therefore discusses and shows the results and improvements obtained by using the FloatStar level stabiliser. The results and benefits of the FloatStar Flow Optimiser are discussed in the second section of this paper.

In the 10 years from 1998 to 2008 the annual number of fatalities in the Australian mining industry has plateaued (MCA, 2007-08 and abc.net.au website). Despite significant efforts to eliminate fatalities, this is not a comfortable statistic in this very public performance indicator.GHD has been working with the mining and minerals processing industry to identify the key risks that lead to fatalities utilising a semi quantitative risk assessment technique (SQRA®), initially developed to assist Major Hazards Facilities prepare Safety Cases (OH&S, 2007-08) in response to the Longford Incident in 1998 (Dawson and Brooks, 1999).Workshop cross functional teams are assembled from the sites and led by the GHD facilitators to identify the incident types that can have fatal consequences, the causes of those incidents and the controls that are utilised (or could be utilised) to reduce the risk. The risks for each incident type are quantified to produce a risk profile for the facility and the critical controls – the controls that have the greatest impact at reducing the risk of fatality – are selected. These controls are assessed for their adequacy and improvement actions are identified. Prioritisation of the actions is achieved by re-estimating the incident risk profiles.A review has been undertaken using a small sample from the more than 100 individual studies that GHD has completed at mining and minerals processing sites. The five most significant risks reported by sites are:1. Fall from Heights,2. Vehicle/ Vehicle and Vehicle/Pedestrian interactions,3. Entanglement,4. Molten Metals and Materials, and5. Electricity.The most significant reductions in risk identified were found to be by implementing engineering controls. Examples include:1. Chutes to contain splashes and spills of molten materials,2. Redesigning instrument and equipment layouts to take personnel away form high risk areas,3. Designing remotely operated equipment to remove personnel away from high risk areas,4. Proper fire fighting equipment provisions such as deluges around flammable materials, and5. Adequate risk assessment to ensure equipment is designed to handle the real situations and not a design case to meet an arbitrary specification.All of these cases and many of the actions identified in the studies could have been handled through better design and construction early in the life of a project rather than retrospectively fitted after operations have begun.

The Midas epithermal system is one of the larger low-sulfidation epithermal vein systems discovered in the western US in recent years, containing in excess of 3 Moz of gold (premining). The deposit is spatially and temporally related to bimodal volcanism in the Northern Nevada Rift; dates on igneous rocks (16 - 14.7 Ma) bracket the age of high grade veins (15.3 Ma). Hydrothermal alteration at Midas is typical of epithermal systems, comprising proximal potassic through distal propylitic assemblages; in contrast to many epithermal systems, Midas has minimal development of wallrock illite/sericite. Mineral assemblages are clearly zoned on the vein structures that acted as focal planes for fluid upflow. Geochemical zoning patterns also show this zoning. Metals were deposited in open-space veins as the result of boiling of hydrothermal fluids; multiple episodes of crustiform mineral deposition are documented in the vein textures. The major vein minerals include quartz, adularia, calcite, selenides and sulfides, with electrum as the primary ore mineral. REE patterns for vein material are similar to patterns for coeval rhyolites, but distinctly different from patterns of the host rocks. Stable isotope data are consistent with meteoric water as the dominant ore fluid. Combined REE and stable isotope data suggest that fluid from which the main ore-bearing stage of the veins was deposited was slightly lower pH than other stages.

This paper will discuss the issues associated with blasting in an urban mining environment that have been addressed by Winstone Aggregates at the Mt Wellington Quarry. These issues include - control of vibration and air overpressure, repeatability of shot performance, fragmentation on an extremely low maximum instantaneous charge, compliance with Territorial Authority regulations and perception. Over the last two years, in order to address these issues, Winstone Aggregates have undertaken a programme of continuous improvement, which has included; ò implementation of new technology; ò revising site procedures; ò conducting an investigation into the structural response of local buildings; ò investigating safe extrapolation; ò extensive public consultation; ò establishing credibility during the consent process; ò identification of perception issues; and ò building relationships and trust with neighbours. The issues addressed at the Mt Wellington Quarry have increasing significance for traditionally rural mining operations, as the input of the local community being urban or rural, increases. New and existing operations have the potential to adopt best practice now, building trust with the community and raising the profile of the industry.

The Southwest Pacific is a region of active volcanism and geothermal systems. Only in New Zealand have the geothermal systems been exploited for electricity generation and industrial processing. At present, approximately 280 MWe of geothermal electricity is generated in New Zealand. A considerable amount of further exploration work is required before the total geothermal potential of the region can be assessed and before the significance of these resources can be judged against other local energy sources.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and may I thank you for inviting me once again to address your conference. I would first like to welcome you all, especially international delegates and conference speakers. ItÆs a pleasure to be with you all and I hope that you have the time to enjoy the many beautiful sights that the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty have to offer.   Holding your conference in Waihi is particularly apt, especially bearing in mind the conference theme û 'Mining in the Community'. There can be few venues in the world that can boast a world class gold deposit of the likes of Martha Hill located right here in the centre of a rural service town. ItÆs a deposit that has a mining history active now in its third century and that to date has yielded some 7.5 million ounces of gold and 50 million ounces of silver. I doubt that when John McCombie and Robert Lee discovered gold at Martha Hill in 1878 that they had any inkling that their endeavours would be the foundation for a mine that would become such an inseparable part of the economic and social fabric of Waihi for the next 130 years.   This is now my fifth appearance at a New Zealand minerals conference, I especially value such occasions as it allows me to comment on your industryÆs performance over the past year, share my thoughts on matters affecting your industry, and also to give you some feedback from central government.

TheSouthern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand are currently rising rapidly as a consequence of continental collision along the Pacific-Australian plate boundary. Rapid uplift has resulted in a major thermal anomaly in the shallow crust beneath the alps. Alpine topography and associated intense precipitation, coupled with the thermal anomaly are responsible for vigorous combined topographic/convective circulation of water through the shallow crust.   Uplift is greatest in a wedge-shaped region between the Alpine Fault and an associated second-order backthrust system, the Main Divide Fault Zone, approximately 20 km to the east. The Main Divide Fault Zone is segmented into NNE and NE striking faults, which are regionally sub-parallel to the Alpine Fault, but dip northwest in the opposite direction. Reverse oblique-slip on the Main Divide Fault is in an easterly direction, with a greater component of strike-slip movement on the NE trending faults. Elevated topography in the Mt Cook region is related to thrusting of a relatively homoclinal sequence of semi-schistose rocks on top of lower-grade greywacke, which controls the position of the Main Divide. Tectonically induced fluid flow resulted in only minor alteration and hydrothermal mineralisation of fault-rocks in Alpine and Main Divide Faults, and localised deposition of quartz and/or carbonate in the immediate hangingwall.   The wedge between the Alpine and Main Divide Faults is segmented by third-order structures north of the Mount Cook region. A series of right-lateral (-085/700S) and left-lateral (-150/600SW) faults, which are synthetic and antithetic to the Alpine Fault, respectively, developed as a conjugate set during uplift. Fluid-flow in the Southern Alps is controlled by these third-order fault/fracture systems. Cu-Au mineralisation, hydrothermal veins, and surface hot spring activity are localised by third-order fault/fractures and appears to be enhanced where conjugates intersect.

Several drilling programs at Maldon have produced 7790 core samples, which were assayed for gold, with 2825 of the samples assayed for nine other metallic elements. There is a lack of correlation between gold and all other elements. The situation, however, changes dramatically when sorted according to the abundance of arsenic. In the populations where As >200 ppm, there are strong, positive correlations between gold and several elements. There is also a strong positive correlation of Au with the weighted sums and products of all elements with the elemental averages as a weighting factor, and Bi*Sb and Bi*As elemental products. In these populations, there is also a strong positive correlation between the logarithms of Au and logarithms of each element, as well as the elemental sums and products described above. The correlation coefficients increase with higher As cut-off values.All elemental distributions but especially gold show a high-nugget effect and display high skewness and dispersion, low kurtosis, and common outliers. The distributions of their logarithms are several magnitudes less scattered and without outliers. Thus, the logarithmical distribution correlations are best for practical use.Correlation coefficients were T-tested and are statistically significant. The elemental correlations, particularly those of logarithmic values of weighted sums and Bi, could be used as a gold path finding tool at Maldon. After a preliminary assay for gold and arsenic, only samples with As > 200 ppm should be assayed for other elements. Higher values of gold-correlated elements or elemental ratios, in samples with low gold grades, may increase confidence that gold is under reporting due to its highly nuggetty nature.CITATION:Krokowski de Vickerod, J and Ebsworth, G B, 2012. The emergence of China as a global economic power has not been without its birth pangs and the current coal market is testimony to this. Traditionally the coal market has been controlled by mature economies that functioned along balanced lines of supply and demand. The emergence of China and India as major forces in the international market has shifted this balance of power from mature economies to the developing economies of China and India. Of late Chinese Central Government policy has caused wide swings in the supply of Chinese coking coal and thermal coal to the international Asian markets. This has resulted in huge increases in demand for coal from producers in Australia, Canada, Indonesia, USA and Russia. Additionally since the late 1990s the liberalised Chinese economy has been growing by between nine to 12 per cent per annum. The corresponding rise in the standard of living of their 1.4 billion people has resulted in a strong demand for raw materials, initially met by domestic production and more recently met by the importation of raw materials including iron ore, oil, coking coal and thermal coal. Commensurate with this growth in China has been the emergence of India (pop one billion) as another major developing economy in the region. Whilst the Indian standard of living is lower than that of the Chinese, this subcontinent still has some 300 million people with middle class consumption demands. India is a major importer of oil, coking coal and thermal coal. It exports iron ore to China with growth parallel to China (seven to nine per cent per annum). These combined new demands from India and China have put unprecedented pressure on the global supply of coking and thermal coals. These pressures are reflected in the current world spot prices for coking and thermal coals which are at historically high levels. Whilst current demand from China and India is high it is anticipated that new projects will partially satisfy this increasing demand. Expectations are that overall thermal and coking coal prices will rise steadily. This paper seeks to identify the potential effects of Chinese and Indian economic growth on the international markets for coal.

Block caving has been the favoured mining method for large underground hard rock mines for the last few decades. The orebody must be of a size large enough to cave and generally amenable to a caving method. Typically, these mines ranged from 15 000 to 50 000 tonnes per day (50 kt/d) and have been some of the largest and most productive underground mines in the world.Now mining companies, in the quest for improved shareholder return, are looking for higher production rates from new underground mines. Whether a ‘Greenfields’ development, or a replacement for ageing large open pit mines, minimising capital and maximising production has been a focus of project teams. These new block cave mines are what have become known as ‘super caves’. These caves range from 80 kt/d to over 150 kt/d and are being planned or constructed by several major mining companies including Codelco, Freeport-McMoRan, Newcrest and Rio Tinto.Issues facing these super caves include high initial capital costs, very long development periods and significant technical challenges. These issues tend to make it difficult to present an attractive business case for such a project.This paper will discuss some of the potential benefits as well as the technical challenges and risks of operating a mine with the block or panel caving method at these very high tonnage rates. Considerations including geotechnical conditions, development rates, panel widths and ore column heights are discussed. PACMANUS is an actively-forming seafloor analogue of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide orebodies, situated on the crest of an andesite-dacite-rhyodacite ridge overlying rifted older arc crust in a back-arc basin. Hydrothermal deposits range from Mn-oxide crusts to Cu-Zn-rich massive sulfide mounds and chimneys containing significant Au and Ag. Preliminary data suggest a substantial magmatic component to fluids and metal sources, and we speculate that PACMANUS is the cap to a complete hydrothermal system including subvolcanic and intrusive-related mineralisation.

A research team at the Iron and Steelmaking department at Primetals Technologies has established new upgrading measures for improving the efficiency of the beneficiation process in ironmaking plants, relying largely on pre-existing equipment. After the upgrade, the iron content in the final iron ore concentrate was shown to be significantly higher. Remarkably, the costs for employing the respective measures are surprisingly low.This case study is based on a Kazakh iron and steel producer, whose beneficiation process is currently generating a magnetite concentrate with a final iron content of 65.65 per cent. The study shows that the implementation of Primetals Technologies’ intelligent modification measures to the current beneficiation process, the realisation of more effective dewatering, and the utilisation of an innovative binder lead to an increased iron content in the resulting pellets, reaching a concentration of 69.17 per cent (iron ore concentrate) and 66.5 per cent (pellets).The current operation consists of three closed circuit grinding stages, four stages of low intensity magnetic separation, vacuum disc filters and straight-grate pelletising. By dividing the slurry after the second stage of grinding and the third stage of low intensity magnetic separation, it is possible to divert the more iron-rich fines before they would enter the third grinding stage and the fourth stage of magnetic separation. This then reduces the load on the existing third stage ball mill. Afterwards, the ground material is treated in an additional low intensity magnetic separator and mixed with the previously diverted fraction of the fines. An improved filtration procedure, combined with the application of a highly sophisticated binder, further reduces the amount of additives needed, so that a genuine direct reduced (DR)-grade iron concentrate is produced as a result.All laboratory, pilot and pelletising test work was executed at Primetals Technologies’ laboratories in Austria.CITATION:Martens, J, Petzold, L and Hiebl, B, 2017. Anglo PlatinumÆs Potgietersrust Platinums (PPRust) operates three open pits and plans to excavate 90 Mt of rock in 2007. With pit slopes expected to reach a height of 400 m, the geotechnical department has a key role to play. Over the last four years PPRust has successfully implemented new geotechnical strategies and tactics to reduce risk, improve safety and maximise profitability. A large database of core logging, face mapping and rock testing data has been assembled and used for failure analysis, geotechnical zoning and rock mass ratings. The data has also been used for optimising blast designs on a daily basis through the use of a geotechnical block model. This greatly improves blast fragmentation and therefore loading and milling efficiencies. The slope design process involves limit equilibrium analysis, numerical modelling, rock fall analysis and block modelling. Slope management includes comprehensive limit blasting and visual inspections, and state-of-the-art slope monitoring equipment, namely the GroundProbe radar, Riegl lasers and GeoMoS automated prism monitoring. The risk-consequence approach has been used in slope optimisation, where all the slope analyses, operational controls, costs of failure, economic analyses of various slope designs and fault tree analyses are used to determine the ideal slope designs. These activities added over $25 million of value to the operation and also ensured compliance with Anglo AmericanÆs acceptable risk level. The successful mining of the optimised slopes is to due to the greatly improved geotechnical knowledge and slope management. PPRustÆs geotechnical work is used as a benchmark for Anglo American open pit operations. The focus of the paper will be on the value added to the operation by all aspects associated with slope management.

It is now becoming mandatory in Australia to rehabilitate ponded fine grained coal mine tailings, which may well have been deposited initially with no consideration as to how or whether this could be done nor to the costsinvolved. Of prime importance to the rehabilitation of tailings ponds are the bearing capacity and deformation characteristics of the tailings. Since the tailings are fine grained, time effects will govern the self-weightdeformation of the tailings initially deposited as a slurry and the subsequent deformation of the deposit under the weight imposed by rehabilitation fill. The engineering properties of a particular deposit of ponded tailings havebeen investigated and its response to the placement of fill monitored and analysed.

What is special about being a female mine manager? We do not believe that the challenge is greater for women in managing a mine compared to managerial positions in other male-dominated businesses. The challenge lies in the fact that it is a male-dominated business. Being a leader belonging to a minority creates a situation where competence not only lies in having technical knowledge or general leadership characteristics, but also in acquiring an understanding of the male norm and being able to behave and communicate effectively in the organisation.In order to move towards a better gender balance at senior levels it is important to set measurable objectives on desirable proportions between women and men at management levels within the company. Focus and action are required to achieve this goal. At LKAB, the current target is to reach 25 per cent women in the total workforce by 2020. To date, LKAB has reached 19.4 per cent women in the total workforce, and the number of women in management positions is 19.9 per cent.It is of vital importance to create a non-discriminating working environment to achieve equal opportunities at the workplace, to be able to use the whole workforce as a resource for recruitment of professionals and managers, thereby improving decision-making, productivity, efficiency and profitability.Women as mine managers is not a utopia, but rather an effect of long-term investments in actions that result in equal opportunities for all employees.CITATION:Quinteiro, M and Sundqvist, Å, 2016.
