Otto Schaaber (Institut für Harterei-Technik, Bremen-Schönebeck, Germany)— Langenberg, Pestel, and Honeycutt gave an interesting example of the grain refining effect nonstationary magnetic fields may execute on a solidifying metal. Probably some additional comments, based on more than a decade of experience with this method of influencing crystallization, may be useful. They refer to an attempt to explain the mechanism of grain refinement by such fields, and to recent European developments which have not been mentioned in the paper. I. During studies of the temperature distribution in a metal body near the phase boundary solid/liquid, an anomaly was observed under certain special conditions: a) direction of heat transfer as horizontal as possible, b) steady state (equilibrium, i.e,, solidification resp. melting rate exactly zero). In the liquid phase, immediately adjacent to the phase boundary, the temperature was found to be constant over an appreciable distance in spite of a high value of heat transfer (40.000 to 70.000 keal/ m2h).3 Convection, which might explain this phenomenon, could not be observed. Therefore another explanation had to be sought. The assumption that a metallic melt, especially at temperatures near the point of solidification, contains some sort of atomic arrangement with a higher degree of order than the surrounding liquid, now is generally accepted. Considering the differences in energy between such an arrangement and its environs, a transport of heat even in absence of any temperature gradient is conceivable by continued formation and redissolution of regions with a higher degree of order, i.e., with lower energy level.3 At this stage, it was not necessary to postulate any special condition as to the form or size of these regions or the distance between arrangements to be newly formed and those to be redissolved. However, a simple consideration shows that an energy transfer from one region to another will only be possible without loss of energy, if the distance between will be equal to the lattice parameters, and if, secondly, crystallographic axis or planes will be parallel.4 By the way, this assumption might give a reasonable explanation of the well known orientation effect of the heat flow during solidification. Any measures to prevent columnar crystallization should act upon this ordering mechanism: a) the regions with a lower energy (higher order) should not be allowed to arrange themselves parallel to the direction of heat flow, and their growth should be disturbed; b) all conditions leading to an appreciable heat flow of uniform direction should be avoided or removed. Condition a) may be satisfied by a physical force preferably under 90 deg to the main axis of the columnar crystals (i.e., parallel to the solidification front) acting on the ordered regions; condition b) by equalizing any differences in

In determining what kind of pourer should be adopted for the works of the Moctezuma Copper Co. at Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, certain considerations imposed by local conditions had to be taken into account. Water.—During most of the year the water-supply is abundant for all purposes, but it dwindles rapidly when the dry season sets in, reaching a minimum flow which is entirely undergrouad. It was evident, that with the greatest care in keeping down the unavoidable loss of water in milling and smelting, these operations and hence the capacity of the works mould ultimately be limited for about two months of the year by the small watersupply available at the period of minimum flow. Transportation.—The nearest railway terminus was in Arizona, at the international boundary-line; and the price of supplies at that point would be enhanced at Nacozari by the additional cost of a 90-mile wagon-haul. During the rainy season, transport to Nacozari was much impeded, and at times made impossible, by the condition of the roads. Hence, to insure continuous operation at the works, it would be necessary to provide for hauling the year's supplies, including fuel for power and coke for smelting, in less than eleven months. In other words, the average freight delivered daily at the works should be at least 10 per cent. more than the average daily consumption. For moderate quantities of freight, pack-carriage by burros is astonishingly cheap. But it has a capacity-limit which is generally very soon reached. A 200-lb. load, and 10 miles a day, 5 with and 5 without load, is the full capacity of a burro. This means one burro per ton-mile of the round trip; and,

Detailed visua1 examination of outcrops was used to ob-tain data on the lateral extent of shale breaks. Thirty vertical exposures belonging to maritie, deltaic and channel depositiorral environrrrents were exatmind, surveyed and photographed. The dimensions of the outcrops ranged from 356- to 8,240-ft long and 25- to 265-ft thick. Shale breaks were found to extend laterally for significant distances. and in some sands terminates by joining other break v much more frequently than by disappearance. Consequently with regard to flaw, a gross sand consisted of both continuous and discontinuous subunits. The degree of continuity of shale breaks as well as the occurrence and spatial distribution of discontinuities were different for the three depositional environments. Statistical eva1uations were performed to determine the confidence level with which estimates derived from outcrops can be applied to reservoir sands. Results of these evaluations revealed that: (I) the lateral continuity of shale breaks in marine. sands is si~nificatit, and the estimates of lateral extent can he applied to reservoir sands with a high degree of confidence (80 to 99 per cent of the shale breaks continued more than 500 ft, with a confidence of 86 per cent); and (2) the tendency for adjacent shale breaks to converge upon each other over small distances in deltaic and channel sands is highly significant (62 to 70 per cent of the shale breaks converged in less than 250 ft, with a confidence of 50 per cent), hut the probable magnitude of the resulting sand discontinuities cannot yet he predicted with adequate confidence. INTRODUCTION Almost all of the efforts devoted to characterization of the variable nature of reservoir sands have been focussed on permeability variations. Among the widely used concepts that have emerged from these efforts are those of stratified permeabilities, random permeabilities, and communicating and noncommunicating layers of different permeabilities. This study is concerned with the presence of interbedded shales and silt laminations. These features are impermeable or only slightly permeable to flow. Therefore, knowledge of the extent to which they continue laterally and the manner in which they terminate within the bodies of gross sands is important for proper description of reservoir flow. Initial field observations made on outcrops revealed that shale breaks and the relatively thinner silt laminae have impressive lateral continuity. They appeared to divide sand sections into separate individual sand layers. Although most of the layers were continuous across the total lengths of the outcrops, some were discontinuous because the- bounding shale breaks converged. Furthermore, the discontinuous layers appeared more prevalent in channel and deltaic sands than in marine sands. Based on these initial findings, a detailed investigation was carried out to determine, quantitatively: (1) the degree of continuity of shale breaks in marine. deltaic and channel sands; and (2) the frequency and spatial distribution of discontinuities in the three environments. PROCEDURE The procedure used to obtain field data from outcrops included visual examination, surveying and photographing each outcrop. The photographs were examined carefully and important outcrop features were traced, measured and recorded. The selection of outcrops for this study was made on the basis that each outcrop should be exposed clearly to permit detailed visual examination of vertical lithology. and it should also be sufficiently long (over 200 ft) to provide useful data on the lateral continuity of lithology. Identification of the depositional environment for each outcrop was made on the basis of bedding characteristics, vertical sequence of lithology and the presence of indicative sedimentary features. Whenever possible, hand specimens of associated shales were collected to determine depositional origin. Almost one-half of the outcrops used in this study required environmental identification; the remainder had already been identified by previous investigators. Several photographs of each outcrop were usually required to cover the entire length of the outcrop. These photographs were taken from one station or several, depending on the terrain, size of the outcrop and distance to the outcrop. A Hasselblad camera, with a standard 80-mm lens and a 250-mm telephoto lens, was used. The telephoto lens permitted photographing outcrops as far as two miles away. Slow-speed films were used. either Panatomic-X or Plus-X. The final operation conducted in the field was that of surveying the outcrops. The distance of an outcrop from a point of observation was determined by a triangulation method using the plane table. The measured distance was then combined with the angle of view of the camera lens to establish a scale to be used on the photographs. Films were processed using standard processing techniques and 4.5X enlargements made. The enlargements of each outcrop were butted together to form a single panorama. Slides were also prepared on several outcrops; these were used whenever greater magnification (wall projection) was required to bring out maximum lithologic detail. PRODUCTION of magnesium metal in the United States during the past decade has increased from less than 600,000 lb. in 1928 to more than 4,800,000 lb. in 1938.1 The growing industry has stimulated interest in methods of production and in sources of raw material. All of the present domestic production is from brines. However, the availability of large tonnages of magnesite in the state of Washington, together with the possibility of cheap power, have created interest in the utilization of magnesite for the production of magnesium metal as well as for other purposes. Magnesite, the carbonate of magnesium (MgC03), usually is associated with lime-stone (CaCO3) and dolomite (MgC03 CaCO3). It occurs in crystalline and microcrystalline (sometimes termed amor-phous) forms.2 The more common crystal-line mineral is found in various shades of white, gray, yellow and brown, the colors being due to impurities, chiefly iron. Magnesite has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.5 and a specific gravity of 3.0 to 3.1. It forms rhombohedral crystals in the hexagonal system, having a vitreous, pearly luster. The quarries and mines of the Northwest Magnesite Co. near Chewelah, Wash., are large producers of magnesite for refractories.

AT the joint session of Blast Furnace and Open Hearth Committees, April 7, 1937, at Birmingham, the subject of the quality of basic open-hearth pig iron was so well presented and discussed from so many different viewpoints that it was the general opinion that progress had been made and that such meetings were conducive to the advancement of the art of making pig iron of the right quality for the open-hearth man to produce the most satisfactory quality of steel. It was agreed that there is a decided differentiation between the chemical analysis of pig iron and the "quality" of pig iron. Paul J. McKim said that open-hearth furnace operators frequently make refer-ence to certain types of iron as "bad iron," "dirty iron," "cold metal,' etc., claiming that when using these irons, although they are within specified chemical analysis, it is impossible to produce quality steel. Mr. McKim gave a list of the suggested causes of those "certain types" of bad irons that have a thoroughly respectable analysis but a thoroughly disreputable character. Another open-hearth man, P. A. Maclsaac, of Nova Scotia, said that: The effects of iron flint is below standard in analysis or in that mysterious property called quality, are well known to all open-hearth operators. It has been shown that iron of this type results in the production of steels on which the rejections of finished product, run high. What is to be done about it? I would say that the burden of producing high-quality iron should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the blast-furnace man, even as that of making good steel is shouldered by the open-hearth luau. It is the purpose of this paper to bring out into the open this 'mysteri-ous property called quality"; that is, in those "certain types" of basic pig iron that make it impossible to produce quality steels; and at the same time to point the way for the blast-furnace man to be able to shoulder the burden that Mr. MacIsaac and all other open-hearth men and foundry-men have placed upon him.

It is a commonplace that experimental physics in the last few decades has discovered manifold complexities in the atomic and subatomic levels, where it was thought for hundreds of years that no structure existed, as is witnessed by the derivation of the word "atom" itself. The field of exploration opened by the discovery of the electrical structure of the atom was so fundamental, rich and stimulating, that it has been almost exclusively cultivated by physicists since they obtained their first intimations as to the nature of the basic facts. Only within the last few years has it begun to dawn on us that we have overshot an enormous domain in which are situated many phenomena of fundamental importance for all the practical uses to which we put matter in our daily lives; the domain, that is, of most of the phenomena of interest to the biologist and the metallurgist. Furthermore, we are beginning to find that this intermediate domain is not entirely simple, but that it contains unsuspected complexities, some of them derived from the complexities of structure on the atomic and subatomic levels, and some of them emergent as matter collects itself into large aggregates, which often offer the key to the explanation of hitherto baffling large-scale properties of matter. Today I want to describe and consider some of these newly discovered complexities in the behavior of matter in bulk. The application to metallurgical problems is not always direct, but I hope to be able to suggest that such general notions as to structure as those here discussed must have important reactions on our attitude toward the problems of metallurgy. Three different sorts of phenomena of this kind to which I shall direct your attention are (1) the so-called structure sensitive phenomena, (2) complexities of such a nature that they are masked by the presence of extraordinarily small amounts of impurities, and (3) complexities depending on internal molecular rearrangements which can be understood only from the point of view of the quantum theory.

Methods are presented for measuring and comparing "degree" of water drive, and for observing the control that rate of withdrawal exerts over decline of reservoir pressure. Degree of water drive is studied from pressure-production curves of 10 reservoirs; the method used to present these comparatively is to convert cumulative oil production from barrels to percentage of ultimate. Degree of water drive is also represented by a "water-encroachment factor," representing barrels of water influx per pound-month per acre-foot of oil reservoir. Pressure-production curves for the water-drive reservoirs after a period of declining pressure show a diminishing angle of slope, in some cases to the point where pressure ceases to decline or where it even increases; the shapes of these curves are in marked contrast to the dissolved-gas type of curve, which shows a general trend toward zero pressure at ultimate oil recovery. Yearly rate of oil production in percentage of ultimate oil recovery is correlated with pressure decline. The correct rate of production of oil with its associated gas and water sustains pressure in reservoirs having a high water-encroachment factor. For reservoirs having a low water-encroachment factor, it is necessary to inject the produced water and even inject large volumes of water from an outside source. The discussion of the actual reservoirs is preceded by a general review and is followed by a substantial bibliography. It is now generally accepted that water drive is capable of yielding 60 to 80 per cent of the original oil in place in most reservoirs, as compared with 20 to 40 per cent for dissolved-gas drive. There is no need to question the importance of controlling a reservoir in order to take advantage of such an efficient mechanism. What is a water-drive reservoir? Oil reservoirs usually combine two or more of the four basic mechanisms: dissolved-gas drive, gas-cap drive, water drive, gravity drainage. A water-drive reservoir is one in which water advances to take the place of the oil and gas produced. When the oil withdrawal rate is sufficiently low, the water will tend to maintain pressure. The maximum effectiveness is attained when the water follows the oil withdrawal so closely that little or no decline in pressure occurs. Oil in its underground reservoir is associated with water. This water is significant in the production of the oil according to the source of supply and the permeability of the surrounding formation. As oil is produced and the pressure is lowered, water can move in to replace the oil. With adequate supply and sufficient permeability, actual movement takes place on an extensive scale. The first movement of water takes place by expansion of the water and its associated fluids. While this expansion is of little importance in some fields, in others it is sufficient to supply all of the energy required for the production of oil. One pound of ultra pul-e molybdenum has been produced containing both metallic and nonmetallic impuvities close to or less than the limits of detection. various purification methods were investigated; althouglz the use of move than one purification step was consideved, it was found that a single, caefully-controlled sublimation of MoCl5 yielded a highly puvified product without prior treatment or recourse to repeated sublimation. Hydrogen reduction of MoC1, to metal was attempted at atmospheric pressure; however, reduced pressure was necessary to obtain substantial yields. The tubular deposits of metal were consolidated into bulk fovm by electron beam melting undev high vacuum yielding a very low gas content. Boblems involved in monitoring the puvity of these materials and analytical results obtained are also presented. THE pronounced effect of even trace amounts of impurities upon fundamental properties of materials is well known to metallurgists and solid-state physicists. Consequently, groups interested in basic studies of metals have in recent years immensely stimulated the preparation and production of numerous ultra-pure metals. Increased demand by scientists for these high purity materials has necessitated development of facilities to prepare them in significant quantities; the procedures reported here were devised to produce significant quantities of ultra-pure molybdenum. Previous work performed in the field of vapor phase purification and hydrogen reduction of several other refractory metal chlorides had demonstrated valuable techniques applicable to molybdenum.' Various purification and reduction steps were individually investigated. Those procedures which showed the most favorable results with respect both to attainment of high purity and to ease of operation were then incorporated in the process utilized to produce the metal.' STARTING MATERIALS It is well known that because of differences in volatility, chlorides may be separated by fractional distillation. It was presumed that distillation of molybdenum pentachloride offered a simple and straightforward method of purification due to its relatively low boiling point. Alternatively, sublimation of the solid chloride also appeared feasible since MoC15 has both a reasonably narrow temperature range in which it exists as a liquid (a property typical of refractory metal chlorides) and a low enthalpy of sublimation. Pertinent thermochemical data of MoC15 are given in Table I. It should be noted that this compound must be handled with care as it is extremely hygroscopic. Anhydrous MoC15 was obtained from the A Metal Climax Co. METHODS OF PURIFYING MOLYBDENUM PENTACHLORIDE Distillation. It was expected that distillation methods, while affording an efficient purification, would prove simple to control and would have a higher production rate than sublimation processes. Also considered was the possibility of effecting a high degree of purification by using both these volatilization methods in conjunction—possibly a distillation followed by sublimation of the solidified condensate. Distillation of MoC15 was investigated using a single stage distillation column packed with chemically resistant glass beads. Heating coils were wound around the column and collection tube (condenser). As-received MoCl5 was charged into a flask connected with the column using a side loading arm under an argon flow. After the column and condenser were brought to about 270" and 210°C, respectively, the apparatus was lowered until the flask was fully immersed in a constant temperature fused salt bath maintained at about 285 °C. Distillation was continued for about 10 or 15 min until 50 to 70 g of distillate had been collected. Analyses of these distillations indicated that several elements, e.g., Cu, Fe, Ni, Cr, and Mg, were lowered in quantity although not all were removed to the same extent. The occurrence of Na, B, Si, and A1 in the distillates appeared to be due to contamination, possibly from corrosion of the pyrex glass. An improved distillation system of larger capacity and longer distilling column was built. Improvements were effected in lowering the amounts of such impurities as B, Mn, Ni, Na, Mg, Cr, Cu, and Fe. These studies were pursued concomitantly with efforts to purify by sublimation; it was subsequently found that although improvements in purity were obtained by distillation, sublimation processes were simpler to control and effected a high degree of purity.

A study of the literature shows that the greater part of research work on annealing of cold-worked iron has been for the purpose of studying the effect on grain-size and properties other than hardness. No reference has been found of experimental work of the same nature as that explained in this short paper. The material used throughout was Vismera iron, an iron containing 0.03 carbon and made several years ago by the Inland Steel Co. One-half inch stock was cut into cylinders ¾ in. long. INTRODUCTION by E. D. HUMMER An efficient refuse-disposal system is a necessary part of the modem cleaning plant. The large-scale refuse system and disposal area, engineered for the lifetime of the plant, has become more important due to the greater tonnages of refuse produced from increased quantities of mechanically mined and prepared coal. Laws and increased government regulations have affected the design and operation of disposal systems. THE EFFECT OF MINE AND PLANT OPERATION Refuse disposal starts at the mining face. The mining system, the type of roof support, the machinery used, and the degree of discipline at the face contributes to the amount and type of refuse that must be removed through the disposal system. Economies gained through modification of the mining system or mining machinery may be partially offset by increased dilution of the mined coal with impurities from associated rock formations. In some cases the change in the mining system and equipment has reduced the dilution. In all cases the ratio of impurities that must be removed from the raw-coal feed to the plant not only affects the maintenance and operating costs of the plant, but greatly affects the design of the refuse disposal system. The design of a mine and plant should include the location and the estimated capacity of the disposal areas for the life of the property or plant. Complete evaluation of the disposal system and an estimate of its annual cost of operation over the life of the property or plant should be incorporated in the plant and mine evaluation. Plant design should be as simple as possible, consistent with the efficient production of clean coal. Material transfer points, crushing, screening and pumping operations should be kept to a minimum to reduce degradation and the subsequent increased difficulty and cost of refuse removal. The maintenance of good process control by operating management will result in a minimum of misplaced material in both refuse and clean coal. Reduction of misplaced float material in the plant refuse is an important factor in preventing combustion in the refuse storage pile. THE REFUSE DISPOSAL AREA Combustion in refuse piles occurs when air enters the pile in sufficient quantity to support oxidation. The technology of nickel-activated sintering of tungsten powder has been successfully applied to the densification of plasma-sprayed tungsten. Nickel was added by infiltration in a zinc solution followed by evaporation of the solvent. After sintering one hour at 1300°C density 95 pct of theoretical and transverse rupture strength of 74,000 psi were obtained. Shrinkage was found to be anisotropic and the mechanism of densification was comparable to that found in the nickel-activated sintering of tungsten powder. 1 HE use of a plasma spray gun for the fabrication of massive tungsten parts has become increasingly interesting. Applications now exist where a deposit in the as-sprayed condition is satisfactory. However, these deposits are generally characterized by a lamellar anisotropic microstructure containing 15 pct porosity of which, typically, two-thirds is open to the surface. Mechanically, the as-sprayed deposits fail at relatively low stress levels with a biscuit-like fracture. As a result of these problems the possibility of improving structure and strength by sintering treatments subsequent to spraying is particularly attractive. Preferably this sintering treatment should be adaptable to large bodies of sprayed metal. The similarity between the as-sprayed tungsten structure and that of a powder compact suggests that the relatively low-temperature activated sintering technique1 might be profitably employed in the densification of plasma-sprayed tungsten. It was the purpose of the present investigation to develop a technique for introducing the nickel-activating agent into the sprayed structure, to evaluate the amount and mechanism of densification obtained as a function of time and temperature, and to obtain an indication of the relative strength before and after sintering. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Powder used for spraying was purchased from the Wah Chang Corp. in several size fractions ranging from an average size of 4 to 150 . These powders were sized further for an explicit study of the influence of average feed size on densification. All powders were dried at 200°C before use. Spraying was accomplished with a Plasma Flame unit manufactured by Thermal Dynamics Corp. Several modifications of the unit were helpful in conducting the investigation. A variable speed auger feed mechanism coupled with the carrier gas mecha nism facilitated the use of fine particle sizes. A coil of ten turns of copper tubing in series with the arc power and concentrically would around the nozzle improved nozzle life and extended the range of operating currents available. The function of the auxiliary coil was to cause the arc to spin and to prevent impingement at only one point in the nozzle. Normally air sprayed deposits were made with an arc maintained at 400 amp at 50 to 70 v. The arc was blown by a gas mixture containing from 5 pct H, 95 pct N for the finest powder feed sizes ranging to 20 pct H, 80 pct N for the coarsest size. The flow rate was maintained at 100 cu ft per hr NTP through a nozzle of 0.25 in. ID. When apraying in air, the powder stream was directed toward an aluminum substrate for ease of mechanical removal of the deposit. The substrate was cooled by diverting the plasma flame with an air jet, and a second jet was directed on the deposit surface. In this configuration a gun-to-work distance of 2 to 3 in. was found to be satisfactory. Fig. 1 represents a typical as-sprayed deposit micro-structure. Laboratory studies of protective atmosphere spraying were carried out in cylindrical chamber 8 in. in diam by 18 in. in length. In operating the nozzle attached to such a chamber, particular care was required to avoid nozzle burn out due to reduced gas flow. The structure and density of the chamber sprayed deposits varied over wide ranges depending on substrate temperature. For the purposes of this investigation, flat deposits were made approximately 2 in. sq by 3/8 in. thick. From these deposits individual samples were cut an ground to a rectangular shape typically 1 1/2 in. by 1/8 in. sq such that the long dimension was perpendicular to the spraying direction. For the study of shrinkage anisotropy deposits up to one inch thick were produced. From these, rectangular samples were cut having a longer dimension parallel to the spraying axis. Prior to the addition of activating agent, the samples were deoxidized in hydrogen at 800°C for 20 min. No detectable dimensional or microstructural change was observed after this treatment. The working of blast-furnaces is always of interest to many members of the Institute, for which reason I present an account of the working of the furnaces of the E. and G. Brooke Iron Company, of which I have had charge for the past four years. Although there are no phenomenal runs to record, there have been long periods of satisfactory work, and also periods—altogether too long—when one of our furnaces has behaved in a way which may be described as "nagging." All the conditions were apparently normal,but only a very light burden could be carried, which of course resulted in a high fuel-consumption to the ton of iron, as well as increased cost of labor. The method of crushing rock by throwing with violence against a resisting surface does not differ in principle from the method of dropping it from a height upon a specially arranged surface. The former is applied in various mills now in use, especially those for reduction of the softer rocks and minerals. The latter is the principle of the Hadsel mill. Probably not new, but Hadsel's method of approach is at least novel, and applicable to hard as well as softer rocks. An elevating wheel raises the rock and drops it from a height upon a hard metal plate or series of plates. The first commercial mill consisted of two units, one on each overhung end of a horizontal shaft, driven by a gear train from a 100-hp. motor. A description of this machine, then in operation at a mine at Georgetown, Calif., was printed in the Engineering and Mining Journal (April, 1932) and need not be repeated here. That machine took mine run ores of a size up to 12 in. and successfully produced a pulp of approximately minus 60 mesh, suitable for flotation. The mills were each 24 ft. in diameter and 3 ft. in width of face. The elevating buckets were formed of steel plates, extending inward from the periphery, inclined to the tangent at 75". This plate was 3 ft., the width of the wheel, and 2 ft. deep. One side of the wheel towards the carrying shaft was closed, the other was open except for the rim plate enclosing the ends of the buckets and extending inward about 5 ft. on the radius. About a 90" arc was immersed in a concrete tank, which acted as a classifier. The breaking plates, seven in number, were carried cantilever through the open side of the wheel. The lowest plate was placed just above the water level. The illustrations (Figs. 1 and 2) make plain the general arrangements. The plant set-up was somewhat crude but worked well enough to demonstrate the weak points of the mill. In this operation it was early apparent that, considering all the factors from delivery of the mine run ore to the final pulp for flotation or cyanida-tion, the Hadsel mill offered possibilities of great simplicity of plant and savings in power. Continuous operation developed mechanical weaknesses, some of which were readily discernible in details of design, some became more apparent as operations progressed.

The Nicola Valley coal-field is small, but it seems likely to become important because of its commanding position in a rich region that is developing rapidly. Bituminous coking-coal in workable quantity has not been found at any other point between the Crow's Nest Pass region, about 400 miles to the east, and Vancouver island, 250 miles westward. The Canadian Pacific railway reached the Nicola valley two years ago ; two other lines, the Canadian Northern and the Great Northern, are building towards the valley. The vast region between the Rocky mountains and the Pacific coast, extending northward for several hundred miles from the international boundary, which has been the scene of extensive mining- and smelting-operations for many years, is filling up with settlers, who are attracted by the wealth of minerals and timber, the rich soil of the valleys, and the fine climate. The Nicola river, flowing westward through the valley of that name in the Yale district, discharges into the Thompson river, which is the eastern branch of the Fraser. The transcontinental line of the Canadian Pacific railway crosses the mouth of the Nicola river at Spence's bridge, 178 miles from Vancouver. From Spence's bridge the Nicola branch line ascends the valley for 40 miles to Merritt, the coal-center, and continues 7 miles farther to the town of Nicola. Thus the haul from the mines at an elevatioiz of 2,000 ft. to salt water is 218 miles down river-grades. The Nicola branch will be continued about 150 miles farther eastward to Penticton, where it will connect with an extension of the line through the rich Kootenay and Boundary districts. The Canadian government has granted a subsidy of $6,000 per mile, to which the provincial government is planning to add $5,000 per mile, to assist in the construction of the Nicola extension. G. O. SMITH,* Washington, D. C.—This program is itself a demonstration of the widespread interest in the subject of more efficient development and operation of oil fields. The statements of fact already presented and the views expressed are sufficient evidence that the engineering and economic principles fundamental to the idea of unit operation are much more generally accepted than they were even one year ago. And real progress has been made in putting these principles to the test. No one realizes better than I that the fight against waste, whether physical or economic, must be waged in the front-line trenches: Washington at best is only an observation post. Yet viewed from this distance the advance made in the last few months has been notable and to a high degree encouraging. Five years ago the Federal Oil Conservation Board, in its first contacts with the industry, raised the question, "How can new pools be explored without exploitation until new production is warranted by the country's needs?" Three and one-half years ago the Board, in its first report to the President, paid largest attention, among what it listed as fundamental conservation measures, to "cooperative methods in sane development of new fields." A year ago, in its third report, the Board again endorsed as the essential factor in conserving the nation's reserves of oil, "full cooperation in unit control, whether by voluntary agreement or by state enforcement." The function of this federal agency has been purely fact-finding and educational. The Oil Conservation Board early declared that the major part of its task was to help the industry "formulate the broader by-laws in the sense of conservation." And now, after these five years of eventful history in the oil industry, may I size up the situation as I see it from the Washington point of view? First of all, and fundamental to a successful issue, I have observed in the industry a gradual acceptance of technical opinion as the guide to executive action; and this has at last led to some agreement as to what procedure offers most promise. Analyzed in more detail, this highly desirable progress has consisted in "self-restraint actuated by enlightened self-interest." We see emerging the general desire of oil producers for efficiency in operation, which means low costs and high recovery. As shown by facts presented at this meeting, competition in drilling is in direct opposition to efficiency in oil production, in that such competition increases costs and lowers recovery. The only route to conservation of this natural resource and also of the capital and labor involved in making it available is through unit control, which substitutes cooperative, well-planned action for competitive, unregulated activity, forced by the individualism of a small minority of landowners or perhaps by a single operator. Or, in terms of actual experience, development of an oil field and its subsequent operation under unit control means the substitution of majority rule for minority rule, yet the minority enjoys to the full the resulting economic benefits. So far as it affects the public interest, unit operation of oil properties deserves unqualified approval. It means more oil from the same area over a longer period

Oxide and silicates respond to flotation with a large number of anionic collectors. These include carboxylates (fatty acids), sulfonates, alkyl sulfates, and certain chelating agents. In contrast to sulfide mineral flotation, relatively long-chained collectors (generally longer than 10 carbons) are required to effect flotation of this group of minerals. The structural formulas of these various anionic collectors are presented in Table 1. Formulas and solubilities of various fatty acids are presented in Table 2. These solubilities are those of the dissolved and undissociated species of the acid, e.g. oleic acid, HOl(aq). Of the compounds listed, oleic acid and abietic acid, which IS a major constituent of talloel, are used most commonly in commercial applications. The usage of these two collectors is related to cost and effectiveness. In addition to their high molecular weights, oleic acid contains a double bond in its hydrocarbon chain, while abietic acid is comprised of aromatic rings containing double bonds. The presence of double bonds increases solubility significantly over that of saturated homologues. Stability of metal-collectors assumes a most significant role in these systems, and the solubility products of various metal carboxylates and sulfonates are listed in Tables 3, 4 and 5. In addition to these properties, strength of the acids of these various anionic collectors is also important. The carboxylic and hydroxamic acids are weak acids whereas sulfonic and alkyl sulfuric acids are strong acids. All of the carboxylic acids fall in the range of pK = 4.7 ± 0.5 ([2]); the pK of hydroxamic acid is around 9 ([3]); and the pK of sulfonic acid is about 1.5 ([4]).

THE quarters provided for the session on Milling Methods, Monday afternoon, Feb. 17, were filled to capacity. Galen H. Clevenger presided and notables, such as A. W. Fahrenwald, A. O. Gates, F. A. Thomson, W. L. Zeigler and others who had not graced a milling meeting in New York in recent years, or per- haps even never before, were actually present and spoke "in person." The first paper, by A. W. Fahrellwald (T. P. 275), entitled "Classifier Efficiency ; An experimental Study," was summarized by the author, who clearly showed the inconsistency of determining the efficiency of a classifier by means of sizing tests, especially where the material classified consists of a mixture of minerals of different specific gravities. In place of sieve analysis the procedure recommended involves the use of a glass settling-tube which is considered to give ideal classification and thus serve as a standard against which mill classification will be compared and relative efficiency calculated. This procedure sounds logical. Perhaps the greatest difficulty may lie in securing an ideal classifier acceptable to every one.
