DUring the summer of 1905 I was employed by the U. S. Geological Survey to investigate the geology, mining, and preparation of barite in most of the fields of the United States. The Eastern districts have been more or less completely described; the Virginia field in detail by Thomas L. Watson, in his paper, Geology of the Virginia Barite-Deposits,' and other fields in abstract, including statistics of production and references to current literature, by various authors.2 There have also been published a few details of the occurrence of barite in the lead-mines of Washington county, Mo.³ The other accounts of this district are erroneous and meager, and since this field is the most important one in the United States at the present time, a detailed description of the local geology seems doubly desirable. Barite-deposits are scattered over nearly the whole of Washington and adjoining counties, but the product is all mined from the areas indicated upon the sketch-map, Fig. 1, and is shipped from the stations of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern railway, between Blackwell and Potosi, from 45 to 60 miles SW. of St. Louis. The topography is for the most part gently rolling, with slightly graded streams, usually less than 200 ft. below the higher hill-tops. THE different influences exerted by the various alloying elements in iron and iron-carbon alloys give rise to a great number of complexities, which are difficult to grasp. It is important therefore to study any sys-tematic relations that may exist between the effects exerted by the various alloying elements, in order to obtain a general classification and thus a clearer conception of the nature of alloy steels. A systematic survey of the alloys of iron, based on an investigation of the binary equilibrium diagrams, was recently published by Wever. Although his work deals little with properties of importance in works practice, its purpose being rather to point out the theoretical agreement among the types of binary equilibrium diagrams and the position of the alloying elements in the periodic system (atomic radii, etc.), the classifica-tion proposed nevertheless also suggests relationships among the proper-ties of the alloys in question, even though the alloys may contain carbon in addition to iron and the alloying element. Wever divided the alloys of iron into one group exhibiting an open or enlarged gamma field and another exhibiting a closed or restricted gamma field, with both groups capable of further subdivision depending upon whether a continuous series of solid solutions is formed, or, owing to the separation of compounds, etc., only a limited series. Thus all alloying elements which with iron form a closed gamma field, a "gamma loop," produce alloys that beyond the composition correspond-ing to the greatest extent of the gamma loop are composed of ferrite alone at all temperatures. Alloys of this composition accordingly are not susceptible to ordinary heat treatment because of the lack of tran-formations. WHEN talking about Europe it is well to endeavor to keep politics and economics apart but they have become so intermingled in recent years that the discussion of one topic inevitably leads to the other. Economic influences formerly prevailed over politics but today national and international economies are governed by political forces. Commerce in raw materials, food, and manufactured products is now so restricted by governmental controls that the capacity of the world to produce and to consume, to exchange goods and to pay for them, cannot be gauged by the past or predicted by a multitude of experts. In prewar days there were some yardsticks but today there are none. Thus it is hazardous to make forecasts, for in all fields of human effort the world has been cast upon an uncharted sea.

The Chitina mining district of Alaska is located at the headwaters of the Chitina and Copper Rivers. At present, the only producing mining properties are the mines of the Kennecott Copper Corpn. and the Mother Lode Coalition Co., which are situated 196 miles from Cordova, the port of entry. The first claims, later acquired by the Kennecott Mines Co. and afterwards transferred to the Kennecott Copper Corpn., were discovered in 1900. The Copper River & Northwestern Ry., which connects the mines with tide water at Cordova, was completed in the spring of 1911. Contemporary with the construction of the railroad, aerial tram equipment was brought to the mines by pack train and a tramway, 3 miles long, connecting Bonanza mine with the proposed railroad terminal, was finished, enabling shipments of high-grade ore to be made immediately the railroad was completed. A mill to treat the lower grade ore was begun the same year. The Kennecott company's holdings consist of 111 mineral claims. The Mother Lode Coalition Mines Co., which is controlled by the Kennecott Copper Corpn., owns 73 claims adjoining the Kennecott holdings. All data on operations and geology refer equally well to the Mother Lode property. Geology The general geology of the district has been covered by the U. S. Geological Survey1 and the geological features of the mines have been carefully studied by A. M. Bateman, in his capacity as consulting geologist to the company.2

THE non-ferrous 'metals industry of the Soviet Union found itself in a very low position at the beginning of the reconstruction period in 1922, due to the absence of modern smelters and the run-down condition of the existing ones. Up to. 1924 there was no great demand for newly smelted non-ferrous metals due to the considerable stocks' of copper, zinc, lead, tin and aluminum in the courtry and also to the undeveloped condition of Soviet industries. However, in 1925 it became necessary to obtain new stocks of non-ferrous metals and in that year 12,000 tons of zinc, 14,000 tons of lead and 2,000 tons of tin and aluminum were imported into the U. S. S. R.

Coal mine operators are obligated to mitigate or plan for subsidence under the new regulations. This paper presents the types of subsidence control measures that may be employed to meet these requirements, which include: changes in mining methods, strata stabilization after coal extraction, construction of specially designed surface structures and foundations to accommodate ground movements, and comprehensive planning and coordination of surface land use with underground mining. The basic principles of these techniques, along with specific procedures that may be followed to implement them, are briefly discussed. Subsidence control methods that are currently being investigated are mentioned.

IN April of this year the California State Division of Mines (formerly known as the State Mining Bureau) observed its 50th anniversary. The Division serves as a bureau of information and, an encyclopaedia of California's economic minerals. Its primary function is to make economic surveys of the mineral resources of California, their development and utilization. Geological studies also constitute a related part of the work as being necessary in tracing and out- lining ore deposits and the most likely areas in which to find them. The results of the Bureau's data-gathering are published in the form of annual reports of the State Mineralogist, and in bulletins on specific substances. The Division is just completing a series of reports on the mineral resources of the State arranged by counties.. It is now starting .a new series of reports arranged according to substances particularly the so-called non- metallic commercial groups. Of these the following are now available: clays, barite, and mineral paint. These will be followed by reports on feldspar and silica, diatomaceous earth, limestone and others

The potential of deep-mineable coal reserves in the western United States for meeting future energy needs has been recognized for quite some time. However, two of the major constraints tending to limit the development of these underground reserves are the great thicknesses of the coal seams encountered and their high pitch. Although new mining methods may need to be developed to recover these reserves, at least in the short-term the industry has to incorporate presently available equipment not originally designed for thick-seam mining. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the various equipment in use today and their possible application to thick-seam mining. The paper also addresses various ground control and safety considerations unique to thick-seam extraction.

FLOTATION-Mill operator's have recognized that slimes are detri-mental to the flotation concentration of zinc ores. The, presence of primary slime in many of the Wisconsin ores is largely responsible for the failures experienced in treating these ores by flotation. These failures have discouraged the adoption-of the flotation process by opera-tors in the Wisconsin zinc district. The removal of slimes by decantation seemed to be the obvious way to meet the problem of treating slimy or' clayey ores by flotation. To facilitate the removal of slime, it was decided to mix the ore pulp with sodium silicate, which acts to deflocculate the pulp.1 Deflocculation causes slime suspension, making it possible to separate the slime from the sands by decantation.2 Since the literature contains little definite information on the use of sodium silicate to deflocculate ore pulps, a series of tests was conducted to obtain the necessary information. Tests to determine the settling rates of sand and slime in deflocculated pulps were conducted on a dolomite-marcasite-sphalerite ore ground to minus 80 mesh (175 microns) and mixed with water to form a pulp. The deflocculator3 was Mallinckrodt 40° to 42.5° Bé. liquid sodium silicate (Na20 + 3.25Si02). .By microscopic analysis the suspended slimes4 were found to be minus 15 microns (approximately 1000 mesh).

INTRODUCTION This review deals with the controls exerted by unconformities on the stratigraphic and areal distribution of gold (and uranium) in Precambrian conglomerates. The relations described are drawn mainly from Precambrian basins in southern Africa, particularly the Witwatersrand Basin. The mining industry of South Africa started in earnest with the discovery of diamonds in 1866. Gold was first discovered in 1870, and in March of 1886, two out-of-luck prospectors stumbled across what was to become the world's greatest goldfield, in the vicinity of Johannesburg. George Harrison and George Walker sold their claims for a pittance and were heard of no more. The Witwatersrand goldfield has been in continuous operation since that time, some 150 mines having operated at one time or another. Deep mining technology developed here has allowed operations to proceed to depths approaching 13,000 feet. The Witwatersrand has produced some 55% of all the gold ever mined, and currently produces 60% of the world's supply, some 650,000 kg Au per year. To 1971, the Witwatersrand had produced some $32 billion of gold and $2 billion of uranium (when average prices were less than $35/oz. for Au and $10/lb. for U308). At present prices, the annual Witwatersrand production of close to 700,000 kg would be worth about $10 billion. Uranium was discovered in the Witwatersrand in 1923. In the zeal for opening up new ore-bodies, or for extracting the ore from attractive bodies already opened up, we very often lose sight of the fact, that, after all, the operation of a mine is a business proposition, pure and simple, and, for the best working-results, should be treated upon a strict business basis. Of course, in every mine of consequence, a record is kept of expenditures and receipts, and such glittering generalities as " gross receipts," " net receipts," " mining expenses," and a per cent. profit," can be told to the cent; but does this record show economy of management, as compared either with the same record of other months, or with the record of other mines of the same class ? Moreover, if such a record shows that the cost of mining is high, does it in any way enable the manager to put his finger on the leakage ? Does it necessarily follow that a mine which makes a profit of, say, 40 per cent. on 25-dollar ore, is doing less economical mining than one which saves 60 per cent. on 80-dollar ore ? Of course the figures in the latter case look the more attractive; yet when it comes to the point of saving everything which can be saved, and of cutting down expenses to the lowest possible cost of operation, the former mine is doubtless on the firmer and more economical financial basis. But as to the relative merits of the system of mining in the two cases, nothing could be decided without a basis of detailed comparison ; if one system is more economical than the other, why is it so, and wherein does the advantage lie ? This can be shown only by keeping accurately the cost of each mining operation. And no matter how dissimilar two mines may be in character and operation, yet there are a few general heads common to all mining operations. IT is a fair assumption that the main purpose of any diagram is to present facts to the eye in more convenient form than they could be tabulated in figures, and this implies that a screen diagram should set forth in a convenient and familiar form certain facts as to the character of the material screened regardless. of the screen standards used, and it seems particularly desirable on account of the well-known differences in the size of openings of different laboratory screens having the same nominal mesh. In making screen-sizing tests it has been customary to first consider the largest size, going progressively to the smallest, and this seems to have led to the practice of placing the smallest size at the right-hand side of the diagram and .measuring toward the left. This is not altogether convenient and might he changed to advantage, but for illustration I have preserved that feature and present the method just as I have used it for over 2 years. Direct plotting in which the intervals on the diagram are proportional to the sizes of the openings, or to the arithmetical difference between them, seems at first sight more natural and is extremely useful for certain purposes, but it makes the diagram very crowded in the smaller screen sizes while the larger ones occupy unnecessary space, snaking it less convenient for most purposes, and for that reason the method here discussed is the well-known one based oil the ratio between openings, and is plotted in logarithms instead of the direct values of the screen opening. Metric coordinate paper is convenient, although .not necessary; it is recommended, as the use of the metric scale gives a diagram of convenient size, but any scale of equal. parts may be used. In order to make any screen diagram translatable in terms of any standard screen size, it is necessary to have rioted on the size scale of the diagram all points corresponding to the openings of the various screens in question, instead of a single series 'of points as with a single screen. In drawing the diagram assume 0.001 in. (corresponding approximately to 0.025 mm.) to be the smallest size to be considered and fix this as the zero point at the lower right-hand corner of the diagram. This value is selected because the values are to be plotted in logarithms, and the logarithm of 1 is zero. Then lay off to the left for the position of each screen

The Liberty tunnels extend through a very steep hill in Pittsburgh (locally called Mount Washington) for a distance of slightly over a mile. The two tunnels parallel each other and are 59 ft. apart, center to center (Fig. 1) They are for vehicular traffic, and in each there is ample space for two lines of vehicles. Northbound traffic, toward downtown Pitts- burgh, is confined to the east tunnel and southbound traffic to the west tunnel. THE small agricultural village of Santa Barbara, in the State of Guanajuato, has been the center of spasmodic tin-mining operations during recent years. The deposits, so far as I know, are unique, and a few brief notes may be of interest. Santa Barbara, about 12 miles west of San Felipe station on the Mexican National Railway, and at an elevation of 2,400 m. above sea-level, is situated in a flat valley extending east and west, and bounded north and south by broken rugged bills rising about 330 m. above the general level of the valley. Tin-mining operations have been conducted-at the Queensland mine, near this village. A small concentrating-mill was erected and attempts were made to smelt the ore in reverberatory furnaces. The country-rock of the district for many miles is rhyolite of great thickness. There are some local variations due to differences in cooling, or subsequent alteration or impregnation; but throughout the whole district the principal constituents of the rocks remain the same, viz., free silica, orthoclase-feldspar and sanidine. The latter is especially marled. The crevice and joints of the rock are frequently filled with calcedonic and opalescent quartz. The ore-formation at the Queensland mine is of an unusual nature, consisting of cracks in the rhyolite which have been filled with clay. This phenomenon is largely developed over a width of from 80 to 100 m., in which the principal fissuring follows an approximate direction of north and south. The av¬erage clip ranges between 70 to 80 degrees. Some of the fissures bold sufficiently true for a time to afford the impression that they are clue to dynamic causes, or earth-movement. The object of this paper is to report recent developments in the quantitative interpretation of radioactivity logs. The use of reference lines is described in the application of the new zero radioactivity reference line for the determination of neutron derived porosities is discussed. Illustrated examples are shown of logs from the reef limestone of the North Snyder Field and from the Lansing-Kansas City limestone of central Kansas. A method of using an interrelation factor calculated from the neutron and gamma ray curves, called the neutron Productivity number, for the estimation of productivity from sandstone formations is discussed. When used in a relative manner the neutron productivity number has aided in Predicting whether a given zone will produce gas or liquid or whether it is too shaly to produce. Examples of logs from wells in the Freites District, Venezuela, and in East Texas are shown to illustrate the application of the neutron productivitv number. INTRODUCTION The petroleum industry was introduced to some of the preliminary results of investigations into the quantitative interpretation of radioactivity logs in October, 1949." It was stated at that time that the methods presented were entirely relative because they involved the use of reference points obtained from the radioactivity log, i.e., shale reference lines, dense zone reference lines, or a combination of both shale and dense zone reference lines. These relative methods offered many advantages to the industry in interpreting radioactivity logs in terms of porosity with particular application to limestone and dolomite reservoirs. However, these relative methods did not offer the wide range of applicability desired because the esta1)lishment of reliable reference points from shale in some areas were difficult. It was recognized that a more reliable mean; of establishing reference lines was vitally needed. Such a method is now available through the introduction of an instrumeutal zero device. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the application of this new zero reference to the quantitative interpretation of radioactivity logs. Previously all applications of quantitative interpretations of radioactivity logs have been made in limestone reservoirs with little or no emphasis placed on sandstone reservoirs. A brief resumé of investigations into the quantitative interpretation of radioactivity logs in sandstone reservoirs is presented here. This discussion deals primarily with the interrelation of the gamma ray and neutron curves and the response of the latter to the density of the fluids filling the pore space in relatively homogeneous sandstones of uniform porosity. The authors believe that the methods presented herein are only applicable locally to specific fields and reservoirs, and that they probably do not offer a wide range of applicability. However, tile authors believe that the wider use of the new instrumental zero references in sand areas will reveal more information about the specific response of the gamma ray and neutron curves to changes in lithology and saturation. Two applications of quantitative interpretation using the new instrumental zero references are presented. Examples are given which show the comparison of logs and porosity in the limestones and dolomites of West Texas and Kansas. (communication to the Secretary) : I wish to thank Mr. Webster for the copious quotations he has made from my writings, as he has given nearly all the arguments I wish to advance. It is necessary to note, however, his statement that most of his experiments were made on universal-mill plates, and that these were not subject to my condemnation of irregularity. I think this is a mistake. It is well known that universal-mill plates are finished under very different conditions of temperature, with the express purpose of regulating the tensile strength. This is a perfectly legitimate practice; but it renders almost worthless any calculations on the relations of the chemical and physical equations when the influence of such finishing is omitted. Another important point Mr. Webster has not answered at all. I have shown by an excerpt from his own table that two entirely different formulæ may be constructed; and it is undeniable that one is as valid as the other, since Mr. Webster started with no premise at all save an assumption that the effect of carbon was constant. This was an assumption pure and simple, and hence has no special virtue. The whole result of Mr. Webster's investigation is not that the effect of carbon is a constant, and that those of phosphorus and manganese are variables. On the contrary, there are two answers, with nothing to show which is right. We learn that if carbon is a constant, then phosphorus and manganese are variables; but that if phosphorus and manganese are constants, then carbon is a variable. This is a distinct advance over complete ignorance, but it is not final and satisfactory from either a mathematical or metallurgical standpoint. Si-Fe single crystals in a number of selected orientations were cold rolled 70 pct and analyzed to obtain quantitative (110) pole figures. Stable end orientations were ddetermined, and the effect of orientation on deformation behavior was investigated. WHEN single crystals are cold rolled sufficiently, they rotate into end orientations that are stable or unchanged in position with additional deformation. The end orientations of heavily cold-rolled iron crystals, positioned in holes in copper to limit lateral flow and to simulate polycrystalline conditions during deformation, were determined by Barrett and Levenson.' They found that the sum of the end orientations, a pole figure for all the crystals studied, reproduced the essential features of the cold-rolled texture of polycrystalline iron. In. an investigation of Fe-Si alloys, Barrett, Ansel, and Mehl' observed little effect of silicon content on the textures of heavily cold-rolled samples. Since alloys with less than 4 pct Si are known to have the same slip systems as iron," it seems logical to expect that they would also have the same end orientations as those for iron. Whereas Barrett and Levenson in their study of single crystals were interested in the problem of the origin of the cold-rolled texture of polycrystalline iron, the present authors are more interested in the final cold-rolled textures of single crystals of Si-Fe from the point of view of their relationship to subsequent recrystallization phenomena which will be reported in another paper. Nevertheless, such points as the tendency of an end orientation not to rotate (stability), the tendency of a pole concentration to spread out, and the tendency of the crystal to widen during cold rolling become interesting separately when the initial orientations are selected already in end orientations. Also the initial orientations having a [I101 axis parallel with the transverse direction, which include the two end orientations (111) [Ti21 and (001) [110], comprise a series that needs further clarification regarding the way such crystals rotate during deformation. Finally the present use of quantitative pole figure methods* represents an advance over the X-ray photographic method employed by Barrett and Levenson in their work on end orientations. The present investigation provides information on the cold-rolling behavior of two groups of Si-Fe crystals: 1-—crystals initially oriented in recognized end orientations for iron crystals with a [I101 direction parallel with the rolling direction, and 2— crystals initially oriented with a [I101 direction 90" to the rolling direction and in the rolling plane. For the second group, there is a 90" range between the (001) [110] orientation and the (110) [001] orientation. Since the 35" portion of this range from (110) [OOl] to (111) Di2] was included in a previous investigation," only the remaining 55" portion from (111) fii2] to (001) [I101 needs further consideration. Upon further deformation, these two orientations rotate to produce a final texture consisting of (001) [1101 and (111) [?i2] components. The end orientations obtained are discussed in connection with the work of Barrett and Levenson, while the observed tendency for lateral flow of crystals in these orientations is treated in terms of the theory of Hibbard and Yen.' Lateral flow according to the theory increases with deviation of the plane containing the rolling direction and the slip direction from a position perpendicular to the plane of rolling.
