NUMEROUS investigations of the effects of the various impurities common to commercial coppers have been published, and the data have found wide use in industry. Naturally, emphasis has been placed on the oxygen-bearing coppers of the tough-pitch variety, but need is now evident for data covering the oxygen-free condition as well. Furthermore, relatively few of the important reactions between oxygen and the various impurities are well understood, and often the data at hand are not applicable to the low concentrations encountered in commercial coppers. This paper presents the changes in conductivity and softening temperature derived from individual additions of the group VIII triad, iron, cobalt and nickel, to high-purity copper, and constitutes a portion of the copper-research program being conducted at the Central Research Laboratory of the American Smelting and Refining Co. The method of preparation of high-purity copper and its alloys in either the oxygen-free or oxygen-bearing form has been described previously.1 The purity of this material, and the methods developed to produce it, provide the means for direct investigation of the very low concentration range in which the various impurities generally exist in commercial coppers. The usual necessity for extrapolation to this range using the results obtained from higher concentrations, and the interfering effects of extraneous impurities, are thus simultaneously circumvented. Since previously published data have adequately presented the effects of higher concentrations of iron, cobalt and nickel, the present investigation has been confined to the composition range 0 to 0.05 per cent. All alloys were initially prepared in the form of oxygen-free continuous cast rod, the weighed alloying additions in suitable form being charged with the pure copper to the continuous casting crucible. The best of the available high-purity alloying materials were used, and spectrographic analyses confirmed the absence of interfering elements from the alloys formed. Each series was compounded in the direction of increasing concentration, starting with pure copper in a new crucible and finishing with the 0.05 per cent alloy. Composition was closely controlled by adding the alloying element in the form of a carefully compounded and analyzed master alloy rendered uniform by continuous casting. The accuracy of this method of synthesis was proved by chemical analysis of the more concentrated alloys, and, accordingly, there is every reason to credit the stated composition of the very dilute alloys in the range where chemical analysis becomes highly uncertain. Oxygen-free samples for measurements of conductivity and softening temperature were obtained by drawing the continuous cast rod to wire of 0.081-in. diameter, employing a number of intermediate anneals to refine the grain structure. It is the purpose of this paper to present data on brines occurring in the Frio formation of the Texas Gulf Coast, and to show how their composition varies, (1) with depth below the surface, (2) with depth below the top of the formation, and (3) along the approximate strike. The brines vary in chloride content from 3,180 to 73,000 p.p.m., though the average salinity of the salt waters is shown to vary with total depth; the concentration being 35,000 to 40,000 p.p.m. at 3500 to 5500 ft., slightly less than 50,000 p.p.m. chloride at 5500 to 6500 ft. and average 38,000 to 40,000 below 6500 feet. From the analyses available, it appears that the highest concentration of salts occurs in the upper 300 ft. of the formation, while lower salinity is found with increasing depth below this point. The salt waters from wells in Starr County show less concentration of dissolved salts than in any other group of wells farther north along the strike. In all, 116 analyses from 63 fields and 14 wildcats, from depths ranging from 1300 to 11,400 ft. below the surface and from z to 3240 ft. below the top of the Frio, are recorded. Fossils are rare or absent in the upper Frio throughout most of the area. When available, cuttings and cores, and electric logs were used to determine the top of the Frio. A change in lithology was used to determine this point in most of the wells, and fossils were used in some of the deep wells. It is realized that a change in lithology is not perfect for correlation purposes over long distances and some of the trends may be influenced by the inability to differentiate between the nonfossiliferous Marginulina zone and the Frio. It underlies virtually all the area shown on the accompanying map (Fig. I). Although it is not productive in the updip facies, it has been explored to a limited degree below I2,000 ft. Further more, toward the coast line future drilling to deeper depths should encounter this formation. Although thousands of wells have penetrated or drilled entirely through the formation, very few water samples have been secured from the many sands occurring in this formation and analyzed. MINE operators today are paying increased attention to the mechanization of drilling operations as an important factor in increasing efficiency and decreasing costs. Recent progress in the design of drill jibs for mounting on drill carriages, or jumbos, has done much to advance the mechanization of mining methods. This progress has introduced new opportunities in the application of "jib jumbos" that are worth serious consideration. An attempt will be made here to classify the various types of jumbos and drill mountings available for level development and flat stope work, t6 indicate applications, and to measure their effectiveness in relation to their cost. The data here are based on a wide variety of field usage, and are offered only to point up, in a general way, the relative efficiency in proportion to cost. It should be remembered that any contemplated jumbo installation must be studied to determine what type of installation is most suitable, considering ground conditions, loading, timbering and haulage equipment, service available, and attitude of manpower. Early Drill Carriages: The advantages of some sort of a drill carriage were recognized at the time rock drills were introduced. In drift or heading operations where a fairly standard drill round and cross section were anticipated, as well as in flat bedded deposits where standard slabbing rounds were used, track and crawler-mounted drills found an early application. These first drill jumbos were little more than drill carriers, designed locally and manufactured with materials at hand. Of comparatively simple construction, function, and low capital cost, they usually consisted of a hinged column which supported one or more drills on arms or universal bars. When the column was pivoted vertically, the drills were moved into position. Screw jack extensions reached from the column to the roof and floor to hold the drill rigid. In some cases, particularly in tunnel jumbos, enough weight was carried that rail clamps or roof jacks were sufficient. Many of these column and arm-type jumbos, usually equipped with air and water manifolds, steel racks, and staging for drillers, are still in use today. Some have employed air or hydraulic extensions for securing the columns. They offer the equip-saving advantage of having all the necessary out, ment together, and they un be moved i and t. set up and torn down as a unit. Boom-type Jumbos: When the advantages of to column-type jumbo were seen, operators could to realize the further gains possible. More time could be saved with mechanical assistance to position api drill vertically. A rack on the column and a pinion on the arm for raising and lowering the drill in the manner of a quarry bar were tried with some success. The most outstanding solution to the vertical handling problem was reached with the boom-type of jumbo. Here two or more machines were mounted on a cross arm at the end of a boom that was pivoted at the rear of the track. This was raised and lowered by various mechanical aids. Occasionally air or hydraulic power was used. Nearly all of today's wagon drills use this boom-type principle. Boom jumbos represent a savings in time and physical effort expended in raising and lowering the drills. The boom must be balanced by the roof of the truck which is secured by rail clamps or type jacks. The most successful application of areawhere this of jumbo has been in the Tri-State area where multiple long-feed machines are used on caterpillar-mounted, boom-type jumbos for slabbing

The variation in hydrogen content of basic open-hearth steels during refining and the effect of changing from steam to air atomization were studied. The water content of the furnace atmosphere, the slag basicity, and the degree of oxidation of the slag-metal system largely control the hydrogen in the steel. SMALL amounts of hydrogen have an adverse effect on the ductility of steel and a wide range of hydrogen contents has an adverse effect on the internal soundness of both ferrous and nonferrous castings. This has been of major concern to the metal industry, both manufacturers and fabricators, for many years. As one of the results of continuing investigations of the hydrogen problem, much has been learned about methods of reducing the hydrogen content of liquid metals below the relatively high levels that are normally associated with such phenomena as rising ingots and excessive porosity in sand casting. However, it was not until a reliable and simple method for sampling and analyzing liquid metal was developed that much progress was possible in quantitatively evaluating the effect of steelmaking practice on hydrogen contents at levels below 6 to 8 ppm. Throughout all the work described in the following presentation the Geffner pintube technique was used to obtain samples of liquid metal1 * and the tin-fusion method, developed at Massachusetts Institute of Technology,2 was used to analyze the samples. Before attempting a systematic experimental program for minimizing the hydrogen content of open-hearth steels, it was necessary to determine the variation in hydrogen in the open-hearth bath during the normal processing of a heat. The logs of ten heats are illustrated in Figs. 1 through 7. The number at each point on the graphs refers to the number of pintube samples analyzed for hydrogen. An increase in the hydrogen content of the liquid metal during the early period of refining is apparent in all heats. There is evidence of a decrease in hydrogen later in the refining period, see Fig. 2, for example. Therefore, the existence of a maximum hydrogen content at some intermediate time during the refining period is anticipated. To test for the existence of a maximum, the data illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 were grouped together so that they could be examined on a collectively comparable basis. The grouping was effected, as illustrated in Fig. 8, by superimposing Figs. 1 to 5 so that the apparent hydrogen maxima coincided at a fixed position, indicated by the zero on the time axis. Also, by vertical adjustment until the graphs appeared to the eye to be superimposed, the hydrogen scale was made to show the change in hydrogen content. That is, a standard amount was subtracted from the hydrogen values for each heat. Therefore, Fig. 8 represents a generalized presentation of the data and, for this reason, cannot be used to predict the actual hydrogen content of the bath during refining, but rather to show the probable rate of change in hydrogen during refining. Statistical examination of the grouped data in Fi.g. 8 shows that the apparent. increase and suhsequent decrease in hydrogen are real and confirms the existence of a maximum in general. International Nickel has 15 operating mines in Canada, and. 3 mines which are being maintained on a standby basis. Annual production is about 20 million dry short tons of ore, most of which is from underground mines, the remainder from open pit mines. Although some of the underground mines are served by ramps for trackless vehicles, most men, materials and ore are hoisted in vertical shafts. In addition to shafts and raises for ventilation and service purposes which are not equipped with hoisting plants, there are now 28 vertical shafts at Inco mines served by 47 hoists. Of these, 22 shafts and 36 hoists are located in the Sudbury District of Ontario, one shaft and two hoists are at the Shebandowan mine in Western Ontario, and 5 shafts with 9 hoists are located near Thompson, Manitoba. This paper describes the components of Inco hoisting plants-which have been applied at different times and under different conditions, and indicates the rationale for the various designs. Some engineering and maintenance practices, considered advantageous, are also described. MINE SHAFTS Many of the shafts sunk in the early days of the Sudbury District, on what are now Inco properties, were inclined shafts. Of the identifiable shafts sunk between 1885 and 1920, thirteen were inclined and at least four were vertical. Since 1920, thirty vertical and two inclined shafts have been sunk. All of the inclined shafts have been abandoned for hoisting purposes but the majority are still in use as service or ventilation ways. Shafts at Thompson- and Shebandowan are all vertical. The vertical shafts range from 2 or 3 compartment exploration and development shafts to 6 compartment shafts for ore, man and material hoisting. They vary in depth from 1,050 to 7,137 feet and in addition to hoisting compartments all contain manway and service compartments. Prior to 1948, unlined rectangular shafts with timber sets and guides were used. The rectangular cross-section was favoured since the rock is competent, the shape compatible with timber set framing, and since available shaft space could be used efficiently. Resistance to air flow was not of prime importance. Concrete linings were introduced for the first time at the Creighton No. 7 Shaft which was collared in 1948. All major shafts since that date have been concrete lined. Vertical set intervals were increased in steps, with the introduction of structural steel sets secured to the concrete linings. Whereas 7 foot set intervals were used with timber framing, this increased to 10 feet 6 inches with steel sets and more recently to 15 feet with steel and steel backed wood guides. With the advent of deeper shafts, or shafts which are expected to be deepened, the trend is to circular concrete lined shafts. The majority of shaft guides in service are of select Douglas Fir. THE story of the rolling of strip steel is not limited to any one plant or individual or group of individuals. It is a story with many ramifications. First of all, it should be understood that the strip mills we are considering are continuous mills, in that the steel passes directly from one mill to the other in a more or less straight line. Continuous mills are not new; in fact, they have been used for many years in the rolling of a few simple shapes. They were, however, driven by one motor through jackshafts, and as a result the speed of each roll stand had a fixed relation to that of every other stand in the series. This in turn fixed the reduction that could be made in each stand. The mill could produce simple things, but was not satisfactory for the production of the variety of strip now required. It was, therefore, necessary to get away from the restrictions of that kind of drive. To accomplish this, the designer could either separate

In an address delivered at Atlantic City, N. T., Dec. 5, 1918, M. L. Requa, General Director, Oil Division of the United States Fuel Administration, said: We face a new era with all its uncertainties. We have arrived at the period of reconstruction and are face to face with the problems concerning which we have so often speculated during the past four years. In all this reconstruction work the United States must bear an important part. We are looked upon to lead the way, to blaze the trail and our actions will have a profound influence upon the rest of the world. If we are to succeed, even in part, we must not be ashamed to practise economy; we must not despise the clay of small things; the little savings; we must have the closest cooperation between Government and industry. Just as truly do we need civic awakening. All that we have ever fought for, the liberty of the world, is comprehended in the ballot; and yet how lightly we have held this great privilege! We need, if we are to reap in full the benefits of the past 18 mo., an awakened civic consciousness; a jealous guarding of government; a resolution that we will, each and all, perform to the full the duties imposed upon us by Democracy; that we will perform more completely the obligations resting upon us as citizens. During the war, industry, through sane cooperation and intelligent effort, has accomplished results possible of attainment in no other way. Government and industry have worked hand in hand and pointed the way o to future activities which, if realized, can but be most highly beneficial to all. If Government and industry are to fulfill their respective duties satisfactorily, it is obvious that there should be complete mutual confidence. Industry must not attempt to "put something over"-and Government must treat with industry upon the high plane that has characterized the public utterances of the President during the war. The individual who cannot conform to these high ideals should have no place in industry, and equally no place in Government. If the dignified and broad princi-

(communication to the Secretary*) :—The authors have shown that, under certain conditions, the rate of dissolution of gold by chlorine and bromine is reduced by the addition of 10 per cent. of silver to the gold, and that the action is almost stopped when the silver amounts to 30 or 40 per cent. of the alloy. Even if full recognition is given to the practical way in which the work was done, however, it is to be regretted that Prof. Hofman and Mr. Magnusou did not determine the temperature at which the experiments were carried out. From the details given, it may be inferred that the temperature was raised by chemical action by about 20' C. when 21 g. of sulphuric acid was added, and that the mixture was then slowly cooled down during the experiment. When bromine or very weak chlorine solutions were used, there could not have been any perceptible heating-action. As the action of both chlorine and bromine is aided by heat, it follows that the stronger solutions of chlorine were given an unfair advantage over the weaker solutions, and over bromine. If the temperature had been the same in each case, I do not think that the conclusions deduced by Prof. Hofman and Mr. Magnuson' would have been found to be justified. (This is speaking generally. In barrel-treatment the conditions are similar to those in the experiments.) The superior speed of bromine as compared with chlorine at equivalent strengths is not yet disproved, and the differences noted between strong and weak solutions of chlorine may have been largely a function of the temperature. Moreover, the authors used somewhat-coarse particles of gold, and did not try how far time was a factor, although it is obvi-

HIGH GRADE zinc stocks were reported short early in 1943, but not Prime Western. Maximum production of High Grade was expected to be reached before the middle of the year, and demands of new brass mills were to take all of the increase. In February three premiums (A, B, C) of 2 3/4c. per lb. of zinc in ore were announced to encourage production from high-cost mines, the number of premiums being in proportion to estimates of ore-production costs.

A three-dimensional photoelastic study was made to determine the stress state around the wall and bottom of a wellbore due to fluid pressure within the wellbore and unequal principal geostatic stresses. Models simulating the wellbore were made from a phthalic anhydride-cured epoxy resin. The frozen stress technique of three-dimensional photoelastic-ity was used to determine the stresses within the model. Two separate problems were solved: (1) hydrostatic pressure on all sides of the model with the exception of the inside of the hole, and (2) uniaxial compression perpendicular to the center line of the hole. The results are presented in the form of contour curves for each stress component. The curves cover a region which extends several hole radii from the bottom and wall of the hole. By proper use of these results, the state of stress may be calculated for any point on the wall or bottom of the hole, as well as for any point within the material that surrounds the hole. A systematic method is given for calculating these stress components for any combination of fluid pressure within the wellbore and system of unequal principal geostatic stresses, provided one of the principal geostatic stresses is parallel with the wellbore. The results show that stresses around the wall and bottom of a wellbore, induced by an uneyual system of principal geostatic stresses, are appreciably different from those induced by geostatic stresses that are hydrostatic. For uneyual principal geostatic stresses, the experimentally determined stresses on the wall of the hole several radii from the bottom are in good agreement with the stresses calculated by elastic theory. INTRODUCTION Interest in the problem of determining the stresses around and near the bottom of a wellbore, due to geostatic loading and fluid pressure within the wellbore, originated in the petroleum industry. The stresses on the wall of the wellbore are of interest due to their relation to lost circulation during drilling, the fracturing of formations during squeeze cementing and hydraulic fracturing of producing formations. The stresses on the bottom of the hole are of interest to the drilling segment of the industry because to produce a hole in the earth it is necessary to remove material from the bottom of the hole. This removal of material is produced by structural failure of the rock, whatever the criterion for failure may be. Cunningham and Eeninkl have shown that for certain conditions the effect on drilling rate of the bottom-hole stresses caused by a hydrostatic overburden pressure is small compared to other effects. This question, however, needs further experimental and analytical investigation. Much information concerning the stresses on the walls of wellbores has been published considering both equal and unequal principal geostatic stresses. The problem of determining the stresses around the bottom of the wellbore is considerably more complicated. However, previous investigators have obtained numerical and experimental solutions to the problem for equal principal geostatic stresses. whitworth2 and woods3 have obtained numerical solutions. word415 obtained a three-dimensional photoelastic solution, Durelli and Deily 6 obtained surface stresses only by photoelastic means, and Cheatham and Wilhoit7 determined the stresses around the bottom of a short cylindrical cavity. While Miles and McGuire, Harrison and Kieschnick and Hubbert and Willis 10 obtained the stresses on the wall of a wellbore for unequal principal geostatic stresses, they did not concern themselves with the stresses near the bottom of the hole. The estimates made by Hubbert and Willis of the differences between the principal geostatic stresses indicate that, to obtain a satisfactory solution for the stresses around the bottom of a wellbore, unequal principal geostatic stresses should be considered. The objective of this chapter is to discuss the interrelationship between industrial minerals and chemical manufacturing. It is intended to supplement rather than duplicate the commodity chapters. Particular emphasis is given to the pertinent chemical element and to market factors. Condensing this broad subject into a few pages of this handbook permits treating only the most important elements derived from industrial minerals. Hydrocarbons, which quantitatively dominate as raw materials for the chemical industry, are omitted, as are the metallic elements and the minerals covered in other "use" chapters such as phosphorous, potassium and nitrogen for fertilizers, and titanium dioxide for pigments. The remaining six elements of major importance are: boron, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, sodium, and sulfur. These elements are treated individually under separate headings. Table I (Jones, 1973) affords an overview of the main industrial minerals, the chemical products derived from them, and end uses of the products. Salt brines have particular importance as raw material sources for the chemical industry. Table 2 (Anon., 1967) is a chart of the chemical compounds derived from four types of brines: (1) Owens Lake-type brines, which are sources of boron and sodium compounds; (2) Midland-type brines, from which bromine, iodine, and chlorides of calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium are derived; (3) Searles Lake-type brines, yielding boron, bromine, lithium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium compounds; and (4) Silver Peak-type brines, produced mainly for lithium. Market Attributes Some of the important market traits common to industrial minerals used by the chemical industry are listed below. 1. They are international commodities, such as fluorspar and sulfur, which largely move to foreign consumers. 2. Grade, and freedom from deleterious elements are important factors affecting their usability in chemical processes. An example is salt (NaCl) used in electrolysis where ultrapure evaporated salt is required to meet rigid specifications. 3. Purified products take on the characteristics of specialty items and command a distinctly higher price than the basic commodity from which they are derived. 4. In practically all cases, chemical users require some sort of cleaning or beneficiation of the naturally-occurring mineral to bring it to specification, and individual specifications may vary from user to user for essentially the same use. 5. In some instances it is necessary to strike a balance between what the vendor can supply and what the buyer requires, with the result that specifications have to be eased to afford the needed materials in marginal cases. 6. Because they tend to be bulk commodities, low cost for handling and transportation are important and such costs may limit the area from which a chemical user can draw his supply. For example, fluorspar from China and Thailand normally goes to Japan, while South African fluorspar can go either to Japan or to the US. 7. Shipments are usually in bulk and frequently in multiple-car, full-trainload or full-shipload lots to reduce transport costs, which in turn may require large terminal investment facilities.

The effect of transition element binary solid solution additions upon the recrystallization temperature of titanium has been investigated. All additions, except columbium and tungsten, raised the recrystallization temperature. A correlation is obtained between the logarithm of the absolute rate of change of recrystallization temperature with atomic percent solute and the number of uuter d shell electrons attributed to the free atom of the solute element in its ground state. The work of Abrahamson, et aL.1-6 on dilute binary solid solution alloys indicated a correlation between the free atom ground state electron configuration of the solute and both the brittle-ductile transition and recrystallization temperature. It is shown in these studies that the number of outer s and d electrons in the solute are of prime importance in determining the absolute rate of change of recrystallization or transition temperature with composition. Furthermore, the limit of initial linearity (in the curve of recrystallization temperature vs at. pct solute) has been shown to be a function of the number of d shell electrons in the solute for dilute iron- and vanadium-base alloys. To date no complete systematic recrystallization study of dilute binary titanium base alloys has been made. This study together with that of zirconium base alloys 6 will provide the data for the comparison of the effect of the same solutes upon two solvents with the same number of outer d shell electrons.

Over the past several years, the steady progress of gas lift from a mysterious art into a developing science has been traceable through the many fine papers that have appeared in Journal of Petroleum Technology. Consequently, this magazine has rightly become a standard for the serious students of gas lift all over the world. The following discussion is offered in a sincere attempt to accurately present certain topics covered in the subject paper in the light of acknowledged state of the art procedures. INSTALLATION DESIGN The first point to be questioned is the author's installation design, beginning with Eq. 6. The use of 1,200 psi in the spacing equation instead of the 1,275 psi noted as available seems, at first glance, to be a simple arithmetic error. Upon further examination, it appears evident that both this 75 psi plus the 100-psi safety factor must be subtracted from available kickoff pressure because of conditions imposed by the characteristics of the ASC valve (see Fig. B-1). Pressure-charged valve design is incorrectly penalized by spacing the first valve using only 1,100 psi. The use of such a high back-pressure makes it appear that a typical ASC installation would require no more valves than a comparable conventional valve installation. Using a value of 100-psi tree pressure, the well could be valved to 11,000 ft very conservatively with seven pressure-operated valves, but would still require 11 ASC valves. The use of 400-B/D spacing gradient for a 140-B/D rate is not an accepted practice using precharged valves. The author would have done well to note the advantages to be gained by reducing the 500-psi tree pressure, which is clearly explained by Beadle, Harlan and Brown.' In Step 1 of Part III of the continuous flow discussion, the author incorrectly applies the Poettmann and Carpenter curves.2 Item 2 is an incorrect statement. An excellent reference on this point is the paper by Baxen-dell and Thomas.' VALVE MECHANICS The next topic relates to the mechanics of precharged valves. Eq. 2 for the ASC valve can be used to describe the condition of equilibrium, wherein the valve is closed with opening pending. When this equation is used to determine relative values of casing, dome and tubing pressure with conditions approaching the transition value, some strange results are obtained. The following uses the author's symbols and values given on page 689. Fig. B-1 shows the condition that exists at the moment an ASC valve has been uncovered during the unloading process (Condition I). The obvious result is a locked condition. The basis for the curve is shown on the figure which includes 1,000 psig casing pressure to uncover the valve. If injection gas is not bled off the casing until the pressure is decreased by an amount exceeding the stabilizer discharging valve pressure, upward adjustment of the casing pressure is mandatory for the valve to open and unloading operations to continue. In Condition I the dome pressure exceeds the casing pressure by 20 psi, and the tubing pressure required to open the valve is 1,212 psig. This tubing pressure would not exist under the assumed conditions. In Condition I1 the casing pressure is increased to the dome pressure, and the tubing pressure required to open the valve is 1,102 psig. It is apparent that the casing pressure must be increased to a value exceeding the dome pressure before unloading operations could continue. In Condition I11 a maximum casing pressure of 100 psi (stabilizer charging valve set pressure) above the dome pressure is reached, and the tubing pressure required to open the valve is 549 psig. The author's statement after Eq. 5 that "the minimum tubing pressure required to open an ASC valve is equal to the casing pressure at depth less the transition pressure of the valve" is incorrect except for Condition I11 only. Otherwise, the equation is invalid.

IN the calculation of oil and gas reserves by volumetric methods, it is necessary to know the volume of the reservoir available for the storage of the oil or gas. To obtain this information, a number of methods for determining both total and effective porosity of reservoir rocks are used. For the determination of the total porosity, or the porosity that considers all of the pore spaces, connected and isolated, the Russell7,8,9 and the Melcher-Nutting1-6 methods are the best known and most- widely used in the petroleum industry. These methods have disadvantages in that they give the total porosity of the samples and in that the samples are reduced to grain size in the determination. In many sands there may be little or no difference between total and effective porosity but in other sands there may be considerable difference between the two. For the estimation of oil-and gas reserves the effective porosity of the reservoir rock always should be used. Of the methods that have been developed for the determination of the effective porosity of reservoir rocks, or the porosity that considers only those pore spaces that are connected, the best known are the so-called Boyle's law6,10-13, and the Washburn-Buntings.5,6,11 methods. The Wash-burn-Bunting method is probably the most widely used because it gives effective porosity, it is rapid, and the apparatus is inexpensive. This method employs a special porosimeter in which the core sample is placed in direct contact with mercury. This method has disadvantages in that, as a result of the high vacuum created in the pore spaces, mercury is drawn into the openings, making it impossible to use the sample for a check determination and also ruining the sample for any further test, such as permeability. The purpose of this paper is to describe an appa-ratus employing the same principle as the Washburn-Bunting method but so designed that the core sample does not come in contact with the mercury in the porosimeter.

Further information on the surface characteristics of the silicate minerals was obtained by experimentally correlating the oxygen-silicon ratio of the silicates with their electrokinetic properties. Specifically, the behavior of the minerals in an electric field was investigated using zero point of charge as a parameter. A modified electrophoresis cell was used for the determination of electrophoretic mobilities. It was shown that there is an increase in the zero point of charge with increasing oxygen-silicon ratio in the silicates. Finally, a chemical interpretation was presented to describe the surface phenomena observed in the experiments. In recent years great interest in surface chemistry has produced a number of methods to study the surfaces of minerals and to observe the phenomena occurring at their interfaces. One such method is discussed in this paper. A rather complete review of the surface characteristics of the oxide minerals has been undertaken by parks,' but, a similar study has not been made for the silicate minerals. Two previous papers by the authors2'3 attempted to remedy this situation. In these papers it was demonstrated that the reaction between the silicate mineral particles and acidic water involves mainly an exchange of metal ions for hydrogen ions on the surface of the solid, leading to an increase in pH of the aqueous phase. Also, the degree of reaction was found to depend on the oxygen-silicon ratio of the silicate structure, being least for the quartz and greatest for the olivines. A hypothesis was then set forth explaining that upon the fracturing of a silicate mineral, the oxygen-metal bond (which is almost entirely ionic in character) will break more easily than the stronger oxygen-silicon bond. This results in the exposure of unsatisfied oxygen sites on one hand and active, exchangeable cations on the other. These active sites on the fractured surfaces are then available for reaction with the hydrogen ions in acidified aqueous solution. Thus, an increase in degree of adsorption of hydrogen ions occurs as the oxygen-silicon ratio increases due to the presence of a larger number of active sites on such minerals. A correlation between oxygen-silicon ratio and electrokinetic properties will be further pursued in this paper from both the theoretical and experimental points of view. Efforts will then be made to present a chemical interpretation of surface phenomena observed in the experiments. It is believed that this study may supply pertinent information on the behavior of silicate minerals in froth flotation systems. ELECTROKINETIC STUDIES Equipment: In a previous paper,2 Deju and Bhappu described a simple method for determing the zero point of charge using a potential across a cata-phoresis cell and observing particle movement by means of a Rayoscope* optical system. This setup is simple in design and operation and extremely reliable. With care, reproducible results within 1.5% accuracy may be obtained. A new setup has been developed, based partly on the design by Zeta-Meter Corp.4 and partly on previous cells used at the New Mexico Bureau of Mines. This new, modified cell is shown in Fig. 1. WITH the renewal of the contract between bituminous miners and operators, whereby a period of three years is assured without the devastating effect of irregularity of operation due to general strikes; and, with the increasing comprehension on the part of the large consumers as to the stabilizing effect of adequate storage upon prices; the coal industry has reached that period of its history in which permanence of purpose towards necessary changes is being crystallized, and these changes accomplished by the industry. It is to be hoped that during this era the phrase- " Our National Coal Problem "-will be relegated to the limbo of' antiquated expressions. That this epoch is upon us is evinced by the fact that operators are turning to consolidations, whereby financially sound companies will acquire smaller production units and place themselves in position to maintain constant supervision and control of their development and output; and, as further proof of the arrival of these changes, may be cited the entrance of additional members of the engineering profession into the many phases of management and operation, where- by the cost per ton of output will be, constantly reduced through the increasing use of modern methods and equipment. As an instance, attention is specifically called to the developments in mechanical loading, proposed and actual continuous underground transportation systems and betterment in methods of preparation.

Processing kaolin clays from the sedimentary deposits of Georgia and South Carolina is described in this article. While the major processing steps are touched on briefly, emphasis is given to the dewater-ing of the clay-water slurries (slips) formed in the processing of kaolin clays. The dewatering steps discussed include gravity settling, centrifugal dewatering, vacuum filtration and thermal drying. Particular attention is given to vacuum filtration and the variables affecting filtration of these kaolin clays. Kaolin consists essentially of the mineral kaolinite, which is a hydrated aluminum silicate (Al2O3 . 2SiO,). Commercial deposits of kaolin occur in several areas of the U. S., but approximately 90% of the kaolin produced in this country comes from Georgia and South Carolina. These deposits are of sedimentary nature and occur in a geological fall line in the Tuscaloosa formation at elevations between 300 and 450 ft above sea level. Over two million tons of kaolin clays are used by industry in the U. S. each year. A big percentage of this tonnage is used in the paper industry for coatings in making glossy and high quality grades of printing papers. In addition, large tonnages are used as pigments; as fillers for rubber, plastic and fertilizers; and in ceramics. Properties of kaolin that make it widely used in the above applications are its particle size fineness, natural whiteness, chemical stability and non-abrasiveness. In addition to these desirable properties, it is relatively inexpensive. The finer coating grades of clays range in price from $15 to $28 per ton while the coarser filler grades sell within a range of $7 to $13.50 per ton. Pure kaolin particles are small hexagonal flat platelets. Above the 2-p size, the particles usually consist of stacks of plates, while below the 2-p particle size they occur as individual flat, hexagonal plates. Since these individual platelet particles provide the most desirable coating and flow characteristics, major importance is given to particle size fractions of 2 p and smaller. Generally, coating grade clays are those with all particles smaller than 15 p and at least 70% of the particles less than 2p. These coating grades also have 50% or more of the particles smaller than 1 µ in size. The extremely fine grades of coating clay currently being produced approach the range of 100% smaller than 2p. The filler grades of kaolin have 100% of the particles passing 325 mesh but have less than 70% of their particles below the 2-p range. Fig. 1 is a schematic representation of the major processing steps involved in preparing kaolin clays for marketing. MINING All kaolin mining is open pit. The ratio of overburden to clay will average 3:1, but this ratio can, of course, be much higher depending upon the grade of the clay and the size of the deposit. Most of the commercially mineable deposits occur from 20 to 120 ft below the ground surface. Both draglines and pans are used in removing the overburden and mining the clay deposit itself. High-temperature creep experiments were carried out on indium, lead, and on binary substitutional alloys of In-Pb, In-Sn, In-TI, In-Cd, In-Hg, Pb-Bi, Pb-Sn, Pb-In, and Pb-Cd. The stress at which the power law creep equution breaks down was found to be much smaller for indium and lead than for metals with larger elastic moduli. The exponent over the stress in the power law creep equation was found to decrease upon alloying from values close to 4.5 to values near 3. THIS paper describes a set of high-temperature creep experiments made on high-purity lead and indium and on lead-rich and indium-rich single-phase binary alloys of various metals. These ex- periments were carried out to check two predictions of some creep equations derived by us"2 from a dislocation creep model due essentially to Mott. This model is shown in Fig. 1. Here dislocation loops are emitted from sources, not shown, situated on different slip planes. As the loops expand they come into each others' stress fields and are stopped. However, at high temperatures, as Mott has pointed out.
