The paper relates to the laboratory and pilot plant studies that have been carried out by Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd., Metallurgical Research Div., in developing the ammonia pressure leach process for extracting Cu, Ni, Co, and S from high grade Ni concentrate produced from Lynn Lake ores and describes in some detail the chemistry of the process. In the leaching stage air, ammonia, and sulphide minerals react in a sequence of inter-related steps to produce soluble amines of Ni, Cu, and Co in a solution containing sulphate, thiosulphate, polythionate, and sulphamate ions and a controlled amount of free ammonia, the iron and other components of the concentrate remaining as an insoluble residue which is separated from the leach solution by filtration. The pregnant solution produced in leaching is further treated by boiling to precipitate and remove Cu as cuprous sulphide, leaving a copper-free solution with a composition suitable for subsequent precipitation of Ni and Cu by H,

The origin of roof bolting is obscure, but is believed to have begun some 40 years ago in the mines of St. Joseph Lead Co. in southern Missouri. It was not until after World War II, and more particularly after 1949, as a result of the concentrated effort of the USBM, that roof bolting attracted widespread interest. It is estimated that at the end of 1954, 26 pct of all bituminous coal mining in the U. S. was being done under roof bolts. Those mines alone use nearly 2,000,000 roof bolts per month, according to USBM statistics. Uses in metal mines are increasing rapidly, as confidence and knowledge grow. The application has found equal success in other fields, such as tunneling work for dam and waterway construction and right of way maintenance on highways and railroads.

Liberation (the process of destroying the interlock between unwanted materials, such as mineral matter and pyrite, and coal) is one of the most important precursors to the benefication of raw coal in order to produce high grade marketable coals at economical recovery levels. Liberation is achieved usually by comminuting the raw coal. However, because of the significant interaction between the production of fine particles to achieve liberation and the cost of separating fine particles, the coal industry needs a method projecting the change in washability with size reduction. Such a projection can be combined with size reduction and separation simulators in order to examine completely beneficiation circuitry to produce coals of stringent specification. This paper presents the development of an appropriate liberation model for coal and its solution by Monte Carlo simulation to predict the expected washability of the raw coal as a function of comminution. It includes model validation with a known binary mixture as well as with a known teritary mixture.

MAINTENANCE of membership by the technical so¬cieties and the activity of these societies in spite of the adverse business situation have been noteworthy. This forcibly brings home the fact that industry recognizes that sound technical guidance is well worth its cost. The numerous difficulties and losses due to defects of various kinds arising from gas-metal reactions are now generally recognized and interest in these problems is widespread. The forthcoming A. I. M. E. round-table discussion of gas-metal problems will do much to clarify the situation and will permit us to assay our present knowledge and to suggest the proper direction for profitable future research. "The Age Hardening of Metal" was the title of the annual I. M. D. lecture delivered by Dr. Paul D. Merica. A critical review of the known facts relating to age-hardening phenomena was first given, followed by the presentation of a theory correlating the detailed observations which have been made regarding the mechanism of the hardening.

CONTINUED expansion of gold mining in 1935 led to further developments in treatment methods. In base metals and non-metallics progress is also noted, coincident with greater activity. Statistics are not available yet for 1935 but the trend is shown by 1934 when nonferrous ore mined in the United States was 35,840,737 tons, or 45 per cent more than in 1933. The amount concentrated was 27,167,530 tons or 75.80 per cent of the ore mined, and flotation was used in whole or part on over 96 per cent of the ore subjected to concentration. In the crushing field a new model of the Fahrenwald crusher is promised soon. The Symons fine-reduction cone crusher and Traylor secondary crusher continue to gain as intermediate crushers. A new book entitled "Crushers for Stone and Ore" by William T. W. Miller appeared. It is with more than ordinary pleasure that I have complied with the request of the President of the Verein Deutscher Eisenh?tten leute, to read before this meeting and in this country a paper on a system of transport by wire ropeways which, during the past twenty years, has advanced with rapid strides in Europe, and more partic ularly in Germany. America, with its immense network of railways and water communications, should offer peculiarly favorable oppor tunities for the introduction of these ropeways as feeders, more par ticularly in the mining districts, where, as in Europe, a hilly or mountainous region frequently opposes serious obstacles to the em ployment of surface railroads. The importance of the aerial ropeway as a factor in the develop ment of mineral resources deserves the consideration of every mining engineer. As a case in point, the rich iron-ore of the sierra de Bedar in southern Spain, would probably remain untouched to this day but for an aerial ropeway, 15.6 km. (9 3/4 miles) long, which con nects the mines with the shore of the Mediterranean near the town of Garrucha, affording cheap carriage to the nearest shipping point. A railway would have cost about $480,000 (£100,000), but such a heavy outlay would have more than absorbed all prospective profits on the sale of ore. As the aërial ropeway could be built for a little more than one-fourth of that amount, or $124,800 (£26,000), its erection furnished the successful solution of a profitable mining enterprise. This line has been in satisfactory operation for over two yearn; its details will be referred to later. But beside their importance as feeders, ropeways are valuable as a means of conveyance between works and distant warehouses, and between separate buildings in the same works. Their rapidly spreading introduction for such purposes indicates how keenly the necessity of effecting economies is felt under the stress of an everaccentuating competitiop.

Chemically purified Zr95and Cb95 have been used in determining self-diffusion coefficients in the bcc phase of iodide zirconium over the temperature range of 900o to 1750°C. The temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficients could not be described by the usual Arrhenius-type equation over the entire temperature range. Values of the apparent frequency factors (D0)a and activation energies (Q)A for ZR95 varied from 4.8 x 10-6 to 2.5 x 10-2 sq cm per sec and 20,700 to 46,900 cal per mole, respectively, between 900°and 1750°C. Similarly, for Cb95, values of (Do) a and (Q)A varied from about 2.4 x 10'5 to 0.25 sq cm per sec and 26,500 to 56,800 cal per mole, respectively. The data may be described in terms of the a to ß transition temperature of 1136 °K and the absolute temperature of the diffusion anneals by the following eauations: SEVERAL studies on the diffusion of Zr95 in zirconium have been reported.1"5 The values of the constants contained in the usual Arrhenius-type equation for describing the temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient, D = Do exp [- Q/(RT)], are summarized in Table I. The reported values of Do, the frequency factor, and Q, the activation energy, are seen to vary by factors of about 60 and 1.6, respectively. Examination of the data from any one study indicated reasonable consistency of measurements. The large discrepancies of over-all results, therefore, cannot be explained on the basis of experimental scatter. One possible explanation for the differences in results could be a varying impurity content of the zirconium. Another possibility is that the radioactive daughter, Cb95, influenced the values of some of the determined diffusion coefficients. Therefore, the first of the three purposes of this study was to reconcile the large differences in diffusion results that have been obtained. Several empirical relations have been proposed to relate the diffusion coefficients in solids with physical properties, such as the absolute melting point, the heat of fusion, and the heat of sublimation.

SILVER is not only of paramount importance to millions of people as a medium of savings and to other millions as a medium of exchange, but it is also valuable and useful in industry. Mexico continues to be the largest producer of this metal, followed by the United States, Canada, and Peru. The largest consumers are China and India, which normally absorb about two-thirds of the world's mine production, hoarding it as savings. The imports by these countries exert a powerful influence upon the price, yet neither country is on the silver standard. China having abandoned it in 1935 and India in 1893, when the rupee was definitely linked to the pound sterling. Other nations such as Persia, Ethiopia, Mexico, and many of the South American countries either have been on the silver standard or have used silver as their chief circulating medium, and most large nations use it for subsidiary coins, this use accounting for 20 to 30 million ounces annually. The arts and industries have consumed 35 to 40 million ounces each year.

MINING rock asphalt for use as a paving material is an industry which has grown with the spread of the good roads movement. "Mineral Industry During 1930" reports asphaltic pavements constructed, including maintenance and repair but excluding pavement constructed with road-oil, cut-back or emulsified asphalt, as grown from 23 million square yards in 1911 to a high of 144 million in 1927. In 1930 the same source reports 106 million square yards of such paving laid and, in that year, 664,871 tons of native rock asphalt were so utilized. Many states contain rock asphalt deposits of greater or less importance but in only a few places are the de¬posits being mined commercially. In the year cited Ken¬tucky produced 305,024 tons of bituminous sandstone, Texas 270,138 tons, mostly bituminous limestone, while Alabama, Oklahoma, California and Utah produced 89,709 tons of bituminous rock for road construction. In addition Utah produced 37,906 tons of the purer asphaltic products, gilsonite, wurtzilite and ozokerite, for other uses. Speaking generally, the rock asphalt is a sandstone or limestone naturally impregnated with asphalt to an extent that makes it an ideal road surfacing material without mixing or treatment other than crushing. The asphalt content of the commercial product runs 8 to 12 per cent.

WE are indebted to Mr. Barbour for his valuable contribution to the literature on copper statistics; it is to my knowledge the only intelligent attempt to throw light on a much misunderstood subject. If I should appear to criticize some of his findings and arguments, I do not want to leave the impression that I do not appreciate the article; I think Mr. Barbour has been painstaking, and even where one might not agree with his conclusions, he has opened our eyes and stimulated us in our search for the truth.' It might be well to define the term "secondary copper" and to make a few remarks about the origin and the reasons for the variation of the supply. Mr. Barbour has touched on these points, but not sufficiently to make them clear to those not in the business.

A RATHER detailed description of the entire plant and leaching process was given in a paper recently presented to the Institute,1 so this paper will cover briefly only the crushing practice of the New Cornelia Copper Co. for the year, 1918. The ore, which is mined by steam shovels and loaded in side-dump cars, passes through two crushing plants. These crushing plants were constructed to crush the ore required by a leaching plant of 5000 tons daily, capacity, during a crushing period of 16 hours. The primary plant reduces to less than 3 in. (76 mm.) and the secondary plant, to ¼ in. (6.35 mm.), which is sufficiently fine for satisfactory percolation of solution through the ore in the leaching tanks, and to give good extraction. The ore is then conveyed to the leaching tanks by a system of 28-in.. (71-cm.) belt conveyors. On the way to the leaching tanks, it passes through an automatic sampling plant, where a 1-per cent. sample is taken. From the primary crushing plant, the ore is conveyed by two 36-in. (91-cm.) belt conveyors to a 10,000-ton steel storage bin, with a reinforced-concrete flat bottom. The ore discharges from the bottom of this bin onto four 20-in. belt conveyors, which deliver it to the four units of crushers in the secondary crushing plant. There is no storage bin between the mine and the primary crushing plant. The ore breaks very coarse, is very hard, and contains a great many boulders, some as large as 4 ½ by 4 1/2 by 10 ft. (1.3 by 1.3 by 3 m.). Jams form in the bowl of the coarse crusher in the primary crushing plant, as a consequence, and are freed by means of an immense steel hook operated from a 40-ton electric traveling crane.
