(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) I. THE FRITZ ENGINEERING LABORATORY. TEE Fritz Engineering Laboratory was built under the direction of John Fritz, and presented by him to the University. A view of the building, looking east, is shown in Fig. 1. . The building was started in 1909, and completed in 1910, although all of the equipment was not placed until later. Mr. Fritz gave his personal attention to the details of construction and equipment, and it was his custom to drive over every day to the University from his home in Bethlehem, and spend some hours watching the work, offering suggestions, making changes, and planning new work. The result is a building and an equipment which embody his practical ideas. The laboratory structure is of the steel mill-building type, of light-colored brick, 91 by 114 ft., of which a section is shown in Fig. 2 and the floor-plan in Fig. 3. The steel frame carries the roof and traveling crane-way. Ample light has been provided by numerous windows in the side and end walls, in the clerestory, and by a skylight, 84 ft. long and 9 ft. wide, in the north roof. The main aisle of the building is 49 ft. 2 in. between centers of crane-columns, and has a clear height of 40 ft. The remainder of the width is taken up by two side aisles, 18 ft. high. The laboratory consists of four sections: (1) A general testing-section, containing the testing-machinery, a small machine shop, and an office; (2) a cement-testing room; (3) a room for making and storing concrete test-specimens; (4) a hydraulic section.

When manganese ores are leached with sulphur dioxide, a large part of any zinc in the ore usually is extracted with the manganese.1 In the dithionate process,2,3 in which the manganese ore is leached with dilute sulphur dioxide gas and the manganese is subsequently precipitated by adding lime to the pregnant solution, the zinc is precipitated with the manganese. These facts suggested the possibility of applying the dithionate process to the recovery of zinc from oxidized ores or calcined sulphide concentrates. Accordingly, an investigation was begun, and preliminary tests were made on several ores and concentrates. The results were encouraging, but the need to devote available funds and personnel to other projects made it necessary to drop the work before the various factors involved in the process could be studied in detail. A brief mention of the process,4 however, elicited a number of inquiries, so that it appeared desirable to report the results of the preliminary work. The dithionate process as applied to zinc may be summarized briefly as follows: The ore or calcined concentrate is leached with dilute SO2 gas to dissolve the zinc, largely as zinc sulphate, in accordance with the following equation in which [ZnO] represents the "oxide zinc" in the ore or calcine: [ZnO] + SO2(g) + 1/2 O2 = Zn++SO4— [1] If, in the leaching step, the ore or calcine is suspended in calcium dithionate solution, the sulphate ion, as it is formed, is precipitated immediately as calcium sulphate, which is subsequently filtered off with the insoluble ore residue: Zn++SO4— + Ca++S2O6— = CaSO4(s) + Zn++S2O6- [2] An alternative procedure is to suspend the ore in water, filter off the insoluble ore residue after leaching, add calcium dithionate to the resulting zinc sulphate solution, and then filter off the calcium sulphate precipitate. In either event the zinc is obtained in the form of a pregnant solution of zinc dithionate, from which it can be precipitated as relatively pure zinc hydroxide by adding milk of lime: Zn++S2O6— + Ca(OH), = Zn(OH)2(s) + Ca++S2O6- [3] The zinc hydroxide precipitate is calcined to form the final zinc oxide product: Zn(OH)2 = ZnO(s) + H2O(g) [4] Theoretically the process is completely cyclic with respect to dithionate ion, the calcium dithionate required for reaction 2 being replaced by that formed in reaction 3. In practice, of course, small amounts of dithionate would be lost in the various filter cakes, depending on the economic washing limits. In the leaching step, however, some of the SO2 is oxidized to dithionale instead of sulphate, accord- ing to the following overall reaction: ZnO + 2SO2(g) + 1/2 O2(g) = Zn++S2O6-, [5] so that the dithionate losses are made up, at least in part. Ores and Concentrates Tested The analyses of the ores and concentrates tested are summarized in Table 1, which also includes the analyses of the calcines produced from the concentrates. The concentrates were roasted in a laboratory muffle furnace at the temperatures indicated until evolution of SO2 could no longer be detected; shallow clay dishes ordinarily were used; but calcines 2a and 2c were prepared in iron dishes, with the result that these two calcines were badly contaminated with iron scale. The "complex" concentrate, sample 1, consisted essentially of sphalerite grains containing inclusions of pyrite and other sulphide minerals too minute to be liberated by grinding within economic limits. In the " marmatitic" concentrate, sample 2, the iron was present largely as marmatite (that is, as iron sulphide in solid solution in zinc sulphide) rather than as pyrite inclusions. The zinc was present largely as the carbonate in the two "oxidized" ores, samples 3 and 4, and as the silicate in the "willemite" ore, sample 5. Leaching Tests The leaching cell was a 3-liter glass beaker placed in an electrically heated water bath manually controlled to maintain a temperature of 35°C in the leach slurry. IDENTIFICATION Of the kinds of orientation relationships that may exist among crystals is an important problem in the metallurgical field. As an aid to its solution standard orientations of several orders of twins would be very useful for rapid analyses to discover high-order as well as low-order twin relationships. Although data have been published that give orientations for three generations of twins, these data are not readily useful in the form presented; i.e., in a stereographic projection with one pole per orientation.1 However, accurate data based on calculations of the positions of all {100} planes for such groups would be very useful when presented in tabular form. Therefore, calculations have been made for a group of four orders of twins and the data are listed in Table 3. Illustrative applications are considered briefly, with the idea of pointing out what may be done with large groups of orientations. METHOD OF COMPUTING ORIENTATION OF A TWIN It is common practice to describe the orientation of a crystal in terms of the positions on a stereographic net of the poles of certain planes of the crystal. A single position on a net may be given it terms of two angle variables, two sets of which appear in the following equations: [Polar NetWalff Net x=rsinOocos4pyx=rcos0. y=rsinB,sin4,ny-rsin0.cos¢,, z=rcos0,,z=rsin0.sin4,,] The three numbers x, y and z determine a length r as well as a direction [(0, 0)] in an X, Y, Z coordinate system. In the present case, r will be set equal to (h2 + k2 +12)1/3, where h, k and 1 are the usual Miller indices for a crystallographic plane, a restriction that facilitates determination of the positions of poles of new planes from those of old or known ones,2 as will become evident later. Furthermore, since twinned lattices have certain planes in common, it is an easy matter to determine the orientation of a twin of a crystal if the orientation of the crystal itself is known. We start therefore with a crystal of known orientation (positions of three {100} poles given) and determine where the cube poles occur in first, second, third and fourth-order twins. Methods for identifying twinned lattices and for making the calculations to find the orientation of a twin have been published.3 4 Reference 4 will be illustrated in the calculation of the orientation of a twin, even though this method differs from the one used by the writer in obtaining the following data on four orders of twins. The stress-strain behavior of Fe-C and Fe-Ni solid-solution alloys has been investigated at 25°C. It is found that the rate of solid-solution strengthening is dependent upon the strain at which the yield stress is measured, the macroyield stress being much more concentration-dependent than the microyield stress. In fact the addition of nickel does not lead to any increase in the microyield stress of iron. The primary effect of increasing the carbon or nickel content is to increase the slope of the stress-strain curve in the microyield region; this effect has been correlated, by means of transmission electron microscopy, with a decreased ability of the dislocations to cross-slip. It is concluded that the Mott-Nabarro theory is a good description of true solid-solution hardening in these and other iron-base alloys. A.LL theories of the solid-solution strengthening1-4 indicate that the flow stress of an alloy increases both with solute concentration and "misfit" between the solvent and solute atoms. The functional relationship between strength, solute concentration, C, and misfit depends upon the particular theory. Mott and Nabarro1,2 and Schoeck and Seeger3 both predict a linear increase in strength with concentration, while Fleischer4 indicates that the strength should be proportional to C1/2; there are in the literature experimental observations to support both these compositional dependencies.1'8 The experimental evidence used to support the theories is the change in macroscopic yield stress (strain, e, = 10-3) with composition. However, recent investigations have revealed that solid-solution strengthening in a Cu-Al single crystals7 and in Fe-V polycrystal-line" alloys depends upon the strain at which the flow stress is measured; a flow stress in the microplastic range (e = 10-6 to 10-5) is much less concentration-dependent than the macroyield stress. Since the theories of solid-solution strengthening are concerned in particular with the stress to move a dislocation in a dislocation-free matrix, they should only be compared with microyield-stress data; it will be shown that in a material deforming homogeneously the microyield stress (e = 10-6) is approximately the stress to move through the matrix those dislocations which have been nucleated by stress concentrations such as particles or grain boundary ledges.9-11 In contrast, the macro-yield stress is more complex in that it is affected by several phenomena: dislocation multiplication, dislocation interactions, and the ease of propagating slip across grain boundaries. This paper gives the results of an investigation of the beha vior of the argentiferous cobalt-nickel arsenides of Temiskam-ing, Ontario, in roasting, made in the metallurgical laboratories of the School of Mines of Columbia University in the City of New York. The ore was kindly given by the owners of the La Rose and Trethewey properties at Cobalt, Ontario, and Mr E. J. Hall, Tutor in Assaying in Columbia University, has helped us much. I. Object of the Investigation. The object of the investigation was to learn: 1. The temperature at which the arsenic is most rapidly expelled ; 2. The thoroughness with which it is expelled by prolonged roasting at this temperature; 3. The effect of adding charcoal (a) near the end of the roast and (b) at. the beginning of the roast. II. Nature of the ORe. The important ores mined in the Temiskaming deposits are: native silver—with small amounts of dyscrasite (Ag,Sb), ar-gentite (Ag,S), pyrargyrite (Ag,SbS,)—smaltite (CoAs,), chlo-anthite (NiAs,) and niccolite (NiAs). Mispickel (FeAsS) and cobaltite (CoAsS) also occur in smaller quantities. The average composition of the ore shipped from this district for the first six months of 1905 was: silver, from 4.1 to 4.8 per cent.; cobalt, from 6.9 to 8.2 per cent.; nickel, from 3 to 4.7 per cent.; and arsenic, from 30.9 to 34.6 per cent. INTRODUCTION At the end of the day, the decision by the sponsor to proceed with a project and to seek financing, or the decision by the financier to grant financing are made on a judgmental basis. Cash flow projections, sensitivity and risk analysis, the innumerable ratios applied by the financier, the so-called feasibility study, etc. are all only tools, and the degree to which they affect decisions is as highly varied as are the personality differences and business conduct and outlooks of the persons who render the decision of "go or no-go". The independent consultant, then, is expected to provide an additional increment of credulity and/or reliability to the "tools" which others will use in reaching a decision; the consultant is really not in a position to directly recommend a "go or no-go". PROJECT FINANCE INGREDIENTS The project finance situation has basically three ingredients: - The project; - The inherent risks attendant with project failure; - The parties. The project, to be viable for financing, will have certain essential characteristics, namely: 1. Clear title or rights to the mineral; 2. Proven definition/establishment of mineral quantity; 3. Financial viability; 4. Physical access consistent with financial viability; 5. A market for the product at a price and for the quantity consistent with financial viability; 6. Transportation/shipping from the project facility to the market at a cost consistent with financial viability; 7. Availability and demonstrated expertise of the developer of the facility; 8. Demonstrated expertise of the operator of the facility; 9. Production processes do not involve unproven new technology; 10. Availability of management personnel; 11. The property and the facilities have value (and thus can be used as collateral); 12. Government approvals/support, as required, will have been obtained; 13. The political environment is essentially friendly and stable; 14. The owner(s) of the project have the financial, strength to make equity contributions consistent with total required investment capital and project risk; 15. Backing by credit support other than that of the financier (i.e. guarantees); The inherent risks of failure are (Nevitt, 2nd Edition); 1. Completion delays with consequent delays in the generation of revenue 2. Cost overruns 3. Technical failure 4. Financial failure of contractors 5. Government interference 6. Uninsured losses 7. Increased price or shortages of raw materials, supplies 8. Technical obsolescence 9. Loss of competitive position in the market place 10. Expropriation 11. This paper deals primarily with an investigation of ball-mill liners that was conducted by the writer over a period of six years at the Mammoth mill in Arizona. The investigation covered a wide variety of designs of liners in both primary and secondary mills. The comparative results are presented herein as evidence of the extent to which design influenced liner life and mill performance. Flowsheet The feed to the Mammoth mill was a complex, oxidized, gold-silver-lead-molybde-num-vanadium ore with rhyolite, andesite and granite as gangue. Although the ore varied between stopes, the long-term average in character remained substantially the same. Capacity was 560 tons per day.† Fig. I shows an abbreviated flowsheet of the grinding section of the mill. Primary Ball Mill A 3-ft. Symons shorthead crusher in open circuit crushed to 1/4-in. maximum one-way dimension the feed to the 5 by Io-ft. Marcy open-end ball mill. The mill rotated at 80 per cent of critical speed and was charged with 4-in. forged steel balls. Cast balls were used for a few months at a slight reduction in ball cost, but breakage of the large balls reduced the ball size and grinding capacity to a point where the over-all costs suffered out of proportion to the saving in cost of balls. For metallurgical reasons, the finished product of the mill was maintained at minus 8-mesh. This coarse product, plus the very abrasive ore and the absence of fines in the feed, caused abnormally rapid wear of the mill liners. The resultant high operating cost led to the most extensive phase of the investigation. In order to clarify the difference in design of the various types of liners used, Fig. a shows the profiles with the arrangement in which grinding balls of maximum size would lie on the face of the liners. In 1936 a description of the plant (Fig 1) and process employed by the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. for the recovery of zinc from zinc concentrate by the electrolytic process was prepared. † During the twelve years which have elapsed since the preparation of the earlier paper, several major changes in the metallurgy of the process have been introduced. It is the purpose of the present paper to give a general description of these changes and thus to bring up to date the description of the plant and process. Summary The major changes in Risdon practice since 1936 have been: 1. Replacement of two stage roasting by a preliminary roast followed by the flotation of all the leach residue and the roasting of the flotation concentrate. 2. Screening of all calcine fed to the pachucas. 3. Continuous leaching of calcine and improved classification of pachuca discharge. 4. Close control of hydrogen ion concentration during purification for iron removal. 5. Recovery of cobalt as a good grade oxide. 6. Production of part of the zinc output in the form of "four nines" metal (99.99 pct purity). 7. Closer spacing of electrodes thus increasing the potential output of cathode zinc per cell by 50 pct. Changes which are in prospect and for which construction work is proceeding at the present time involve the starting up of: 1. Two suspension roasters. 2. A contact acid plant to produce 150 tons‡ of acid per day and replacing the existing Mills Packard chamber plant. 3. Extra power station capacity to permit greater current flow to existing cell room units. This will increase the output of cathode zinc from about 245 to 290 tons per day. Plans for the future envisage the building of an ammonium sulphate plant, the first unit of which will produce about 50,000 tons per year, and improved treatment of zinc plant residue for the recovery of zinc, lead and other metals. At the end of this paper tables of metallurgical data are presented relating to the year ending June 30, 1948. Details of Changed Practice Output In 1936 the production of cathode zinc amounted to about 200 tons per day. This has since been increased to about 245 tons per day while plant extensions are practically complete which will permit of an output of about 290 tons per day in the near future. Roasting Division ROASTING POLICY A major change has occurred in the roasting policy. Twelve years ago the method in use was to carry out a two stage roast in the first stage of which sulphide sulphur was reduced to about 6 pct. The pre-roast calcine was re-roasted in modified Leggo furnaces using coal as fuel, sulphide sulphur being reduced to about 0.8 pct. The whole procedure was described on pp. 482491 of the earlier paper. Although this roasting procedure had certain advantages it possessed some distinct disadvantages. For instance, it appeared uneconomical to heat up the entire input of pre-roast calcine to roasting temperature by the expenditure of fuel in order to oxidise a few percent of sulphide sulphur. It was argued that if the pre-roast calcine were leached and a process could be developed for the recovery of a zinc sulphide concentrate from the leach residue, this concentrate, small in weight compared with the pre-roost calcine, would probably roast autogenously, thus virtually eliminating the expenditure of fuel as well as greatly increasing the weight of sulphur oxidised per square foot of furnace hearth area. The obvious method of producing a suitable concentrate from leach residue was by flotation. It will be recalled (see p. 495 of the earlier paper) that when two-stage roasting was practised the leach residue was classified, the granular fraction was ground and floated while the slime fraction was thickened, filtered and dried ready for shipment to a lead smelter. This process worked quite successfully. However, when trials were made of leaching a calcine carrying several percent of sulphide sulphur the granular fraction still floated well, but the slime fraction carrying 8-10 pct sulphide sulphur yielded very poor results when subjected to flotation. This fact held up the application of "pre-roast" leaching for many years. However, successful flotation of the slime fraction of leach residue was finally achieved and in August 1940 the slime flotation plant began operation, while the leach-

MAGNESIUM and its alloys have long been characterized as possessing limited capacity for mechanical forming at atmospheric temperatures prior to rupturing despite their outstanding performances in this respect at elevated temperatures. Responsible for this behavior are the fundamental facts that these hexagonal-type metals have comparatively few slip elements at low temperatures for any extensive deformation and that, at high temperatures, additional slip elements become operative, thus enhancing greater plasticity under strain. The transitional point has been set at 225°C by Schmid1 for single crystals, and at 250°°C by Morell and Hanawalt2 for extruded magnesium metal. In a recent X-ray investigation on polycrystalline magnesium-alloy sheets, Barrett and Haller3 have revealed that, below the transitional temperature, the initial plastic deformation proceeds mostly by a twinning action; that, above such a temperature, the action is mostly by slip. The deep-drawing performance of the magnesium + 1.5 pct alloy sheett over a wide range of temperatures has been investigated by Weber and Vanden Berg,' and their results are presented in Fig r. It should be noted from this work that a maximum drawability of about 25 pct at room temperature has been obtained on this alloy under the conventional deep-drawing operations. For the same alloy, it is now possible to augment the cold drawability to about 40 pct by a process to be disclosed. Hitherto, this value has been obtained only by deep-drawing the alloy at around 230°C. That greater plastic flow is attainable at atmospheric temperatures on magnesium under certain deformational techniques was discovered by the authors6 in their analyses of plastic-deformational behaviors of pure magnesium. This fact is best illustrated in Fig 2 from the Hargreaves analysis6 performed by the authors under two different modes of loading. For direct test, a separate unstrained specimen was used for each load duration, whereas for the integrated test the same specimen was employed for all the five intermittent loadings so that the load duration was made additive throughout the investigation. The higher plastic flow-rate at room temperature, as designated by the Hargreaves constant S, was obtained by the integrated or intermittent loading procedure. The authors5 in further tests showed that, under such a procedure greater plastic flow was also realized with a progressive increase in deformational loads. These findings have been applied

Thermodynamic data for the stable carbides and oxides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten have been critically eualuuted and are used to determine the stable condensed phases at 1 atm total pressure in each metal-carbon-oxygen system. Pourbaix-Ellingham diagrams have been constructed and are used to estimate the minimum temperatures neces.see)*y to oblain these metals by corbolhermic redlrction under reduced pressures. USING recently reported data for the carbides and oxides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, the stable phases in the Group VI metal-carbon-oxygen systems at specific temperatures and pressures can be determined. The thermodynamically stable regions in each metal-carbon-oxygen system can be completely pictured using a Pourbaix-Ellingham diagram in which the two coordinates are oxygen potential (-RT In Po2) and temperature. Worrell and chipman' have described and constructed such diagrams for the metal-carbon-oxygen systems of vanadium, columbium, and tantalum. Downing2 has used similar diagrams to provide a description of the reactions in submerged arc furnaces. One of the examples which he cited was the Cr-C-O system; however, an improved diagram is presented in this paper using recently obtained data for the carbides of chromium. Although some of the oxides and carbides of the Group VI metals exist over slight ranges of composition,3 all solid phases are represented as stoi-chiometric compounds in the subsequent diagrams. Any error introduced into the calculated equilibria by neglecting the compositional variation of these phases is less than the uncertainty in the thermodynamic data. In a Pourbaix-Ellingham diagram for a three-component system, the phase rule requires that at equilibrium four condensed phases specify a point, three condensed phases determine a line, and two condensed phases define an area. To obtain a well-defined area at high oxygen potentials and teniperatures, the initial carbon to oxygen mole ratio is specified to be more than sufficient to reduce the oxide but not enough to convert all the metal to carbide. Thus, the lowest regions in the subse- quent Pourbaix-Ellingham diagrams represent areas in which the metal and its carbide are the stable condensed phases. Cr-C-O SYSTEM A) Thermodynamic Data. To simplify the subsequent calculations, all thermodynamic data are presented in the form of linear Gibbs-energy-of-formation* equations which were derived for the temperature range 505° to 2000°K and are reasonably accurate over the entire temperature ranges of the diagrams. The thermodynamic data for the compounds occurring in the Cr-C-O system are summarized in Table I. Several volatile chromium oxides have been reported,4 but their influence is negligible in the Cr-C-O system. Thermodynamic data for CO and CO2 were taken from the compilation of Coughlin.5 The only solid chromium oxide sufficiently stable to exist below 1800°K in the Cr-C-O system is Cr2Os.11 The Gibbs-energy-of-formation equation for Cr2O3 was obtained by revising the data tabulated in Coughlin,5 using the heat of formation of ah' and the high-temperature thermal data for chromium.7 In 1953 Richardson8 re-evaluated the original work of Kelley and coworkers,9 who measured the thermodynamic properties of the chromium carbides. However, the high-temperature equilibrium results of Boericke9 yield values for ?G°f of Cr2O3 which are 2 kcal more positive than the accepted data. His results for the chromium carbides are based on the same questionable equilibria. Gleiser10 recently determined the Gibbs energy of formation of Cr3C2 and the equation in Table I was calculated from her data and the thermal data of Kelley and coworkers.9 Thermodynamic data for the Cr7C3 and Cr23C6 carbides were obtained by combining the Cr3C2 data

INTRODUCTION Scope of Work Tins paper represents the results of an investigation of the presence, amounts, and degree of concentration of heavy minerals found in the pulp of the phosphate flotation plant at Peace Valley, Fla., which is operated by the International Minerals and Chemical Corporation of Chicago. In this paper, heavy minerals are those, excepting collophane, that sink in acetylene tetrabromide with a specific gravity of 2.95. Percentages of heavy minerals at several points of the flowsheet and the species of minerals have been determined. Some information as to the screen size of the minerals has been acquired. Resting unconformably upon the Bone Valley formation are Pleistocene (?) terrace deposits of unconsolidated quartz sand which comprise the overburden of the phosphate ore. This work represents the first step of an attempt to test the applicability of the electron microscope to the study of subgrain structures in copper. Observations on annealed and deformed single crystals and polycrystalline samples of copper are described. IN the course of study of the structure of fine tungsten wires and tungsten rods with the electron microscope, well defined subgrain structures were observed. The size, size distribution, and orientation uniformity of the etch figures varied widely in different samples. Figs. 1 and 2, electron micrographs of a tungsten wire and of a tungsten rod, respectively, are illustrations of the difference in size and size distribution of the etch figures in different samples of the same metal. The observed differences, as pointed out in a previous paper,' appeared to be related to the heat and mechanical treatments of the samples. They were also consistent with the results reported in the literature on the mosaic structure of metals.' For that reason a program of research was initiated in an effort to obtain more systematic evidence of the possible relation of heat and mechanical treatments to the subgrain structure of metals as observed in the electron microscope. The purpose of this paper is to present observations made on the effect of cold work on the subgrain structure of copper. Procedure Starting Materials: Copper was the metal studied because it can be obtained in a high degree of purity, much information is available in the literature on its properties and its response to cold work and heat treatment, it shows no allotropic change, and it is sufficiently hard to be handled without great difficulty. Two groups of specimens were used: 1—single crystals cast from spectroscopically pure copper and 2—polycrystalline samples of oxygen-free high conductivity copper. Single crystals were studied because it was hoped that the elimination of a number of variables, such as grain boundaries, orientation differences, degree of purity, would simplify the problem and perhaps permit a better understanding of the phenomena that would be observed. The polycrystalline samples were designed to give a general picture of the changes considered. The single crystals were made of copper which analyzed spectroscopically to better than 99.999 pct Cu. They were cast in vacuum, by the Bridgman method, in crucibles made of graphite with a maximum ash content of 0.06 pct. The mold design is shown in Fig. 3. It permitted casting crystals of the size and shape required for the experiments, so that the danger of introducing cold work in the original samples by cutting or other machining would be eliminated. The polycrystalline samples were pieces, 3/4 in. long, cut from a rod of oxygen-free high conductivity copper, % in. in diameter. A flat surface, 1/4 in. wide, was milled along the rods, polished, and etched. The samples were then annealed in vacuum at 850°C for 1 hr. Polishing and Etching: Work previously done on tungsten,' polished mechanically and etched chemically," had shown that: 1—the general appearance of the etch figures of a given sample was not altered by repeated polishings and etchings under similar conditions; 2—variations in the time of etching and the concentration of the etchant changed the definition of the etch figures, but did not alter their general size nor orientation distribution within the limits of observation. Further work confirmed the reproducibility of the subgrain structures observed in, 1—single crystals and polycrystalline samples of copper when polishing and etching were repeated under similar conditions, and 2—specimens of tungsten and polycrystalline copper when electrolytic polishing and etching were substituted for mechanical polishing and chemical etching, respectively. On the strength of these observations, it was felt that, if conditions of polishing and etching were kept constant, changes observed in the subgrain structure of a sample upon deformation and annealing would be attributable to such treatments. For that reason the conditions of polishing and etching were kept as constant as possible. The single crystals were polished electrolytically in a bath of orthophosphoric acid in water, in the ratio of 1000 g of acid of density 1.75 g per cc to 1000 cc of solution, under a potential drop of 1.6 to 1.8 V. DESPITE almost fifty years of commercial practice, the sintering of iron ore has received little fundamental study. Much of the theoretical work1-'has dealt with the constitution of sinter produced under widely varying conditions. While these studies have broadened our knowledge of the changes that occur in the sintering zone and in the freshly formed sinter during the early stages of cooling, they provide little insight into the changes that precede the formation of sinter. These preliminary changes merit study as a part of the overall process. Hessle. working with beds of Swedish magnetite concentrates, was one of the first investigators to study the sintering process in its entirety. On the basis of temperatures observed at various levels of the bed during sintering, he postulated a number of distinct reaction zones to account for the chemical changes leading to the formation of sinter. A more direct method of attack is that of arresting the sintering zone after it has progressed part way through the bed. A study of a vertical cross section through such a quenched bed provides direct information on the changes taking place at various levels. This method was used by McBriar et al.' to show that several well-defined zones of chemical change existed within beds that were typical of British sintering practice. The same general method of attack was developed independently in the present investigation to study partially sintered beds typical of American practice. Experimental Sintering Equipment The sintering operation was carried out on an experimental scale with the equipment shown in Fig. 1. The refractory-walled sintering chamber A was 11 in. deep and averaged 9 in. in diameter. Air was introduced through a tapered flow section B, which contained the orifice C for accurate metering of the incoming air. This section was located directly above the square ignition housing D, which in turn rested upon the sintering chamber A. The bed was ignited with burner E. The required suction for the operation was furnished by a fan F, which had an air capacity of 500 cfm (stp). Hot exhaust gases from the sintering chamber were cleaned in the dustcatcher G before entering the exhaust fan. In the study of partially sintered beds, it was essential to find some technique for removing the entire charge from the sintering pot without disarranging the unsintered bottom portion. This problem was finally solved by sintering the charge in a removable basket, which snugly fitted the sintering chamber. This basket was constructed of two thicknesses of window screen and was lined with a 3/16-in. layer of asbestos paper. The bottom of the basket consisted of two thicknesses of wire screen, which were fastened to the basket wall. For high fuel mixtures, additional insulation was provided by a somewhat thicker layer of asbestos cement. Preparation of Partially Sintered Mixtures The moist feed was carefully placed in the sintering basket, to prevent segregation of the particles, which varied widely in size and composition. A thermocouple was placed in the center of the basket with the hot junction halfway down, and the mixture was evenly distributed around it. During ignition and throughout the sintering of the upper half of the bed, the hot junction temperature increased very little. When the sintering zone reached the halfway point, as indicated by the sudden increase in the hot junction temperature, the charge was quenched. During quenching the suction was turned off and the orifice was tightly stoppered to prevent further influx of air. At the same time, nitrogen was admitted to the sintering chamber through the orifice tap. As soon as the nitrogen had displaced the air and products of combustion, the charge was removed from the sintering pot for immediate dissection. It is impossible to preserve the exact zone structure of the bed at the instant that combustion is arrested unless the downward transmission of heat is also immediately stopped. Fortunately, heat transfer is very slow in beds containing a stationary fluid, especially if the particle size is small. It follows that the minimum quantity of nitrogen should be used to displace the air and that static conditions be established as soon as possible. With regard to briquetting of a mixture of fine coal and coke-dust, I understand that a plant has been installed near Detroit in which coke is mixed with anthracite; also the plant of the United Gas Improvement Co. near Philadelphia is briquetting a mixture of anthracite coal, the resultant briquettes being used in the gas-retorts. The Sherwood mine is an iron-ore mine owned and operated by the Inland Steel CO. in the Iron River district of the Menominee Range in Michigan. The property consists of an 80-acre tract in the village of Mineral Hills, about a mile north of the city of Iron River. The Ore mined is a reddish brown, nonbessemer hematite and limonite. The ore bodies lie in a large syncline having an east-west strike and are associated with a rock structure that is folded in a complex manner. The two 40-acre tracts run north and south and the shaft is at about the center of the north forty. The shaft is 1286 ft. deep, with the principal operating level at a depth of 1000 ft. from surface. A new level at a depth of 1200 ft. is in process of development. The ore body at the 1000 ft. level is east and west at approximately the line between the north and south forties and at this elevation is from 50 to 250 ft. wide and extends above the level at varying heights of from 50 to 250 feet. The 1000-ft. haulage drift extends south from the shaft, through the east-west ore body to the slates on the south side of the body. The ore body was intercepted in the drifting at about goo ft. from the shaft and was about 200 ft. wide at that point. A crosscut was extended to the east and west property lines along the south boundary of the ore body. This east-west ore body is laid out in areas go ft. wide for stoping with pillars 40 ft. wide. With this plan a stope is approximately 80 by 200 ft. and has a pillar on both sides that is approximately 40 by 200 ft. The ore has a height of from 50 to 250 ft. above the elevation of the level, therefore the height of the stopes varies in accordance with the height of the ore body at each location. From the crosscut, two main raises, each 6 by 7 ft., are put up into each 80 ft. stope area (Fig. 1). One of the main raises serves as a manway and the other as an ore raise, through which the ore is transferred from the stope to the tramming equipment. The original layout as for scraping of the ore from under the stopes into the ore raises. The ore raise is put halfway (east and west) along the 80-ft. stope area and usually is in iron formation. The manway and ore raise are on approximately 15-ft. centers. These main raises are Put up to a height of from 22 to 30 ft. above the level floor, then from the toll of the ore raise a scraper drift (8 X 8 ft.) is driven across the width of the ore body, which is in the neighborhood of 200 ft. From the scraper drift, mill raises are put up at 12½-ft. centers, staggered on opposite sides of the drift, and these are extended 23 ft. above the elevation of the scraper-drift floor. The sublevel connecting the top of these mill raises is called a mill "sub." Other sublevels are developed parallel to the scraper and mill subs at 25-ft. vertical intervals above the mill sub. The mill sub and the other subs above the mill sub are known as sublevels or dog drifts, and are 4 ft. wide and 6 ft. high. These dog drifts

Not many accounts of mining methods or labor conditions in the mines in early days can be found; all that have seemed to be authentic have been included in the preceding chapters. In practically every field opened before 18.10 the first coal was recovered by quarrying, or strip mining, the operations, of course, being by hand and on a very small scale; new places were opened as soon as mining became difficult or expensive. Where it became necessary to drift into the hillsides, the first coal was taken out by sleds, and later by small wagons, the power being supplied by the miner, often assisted by dogs. Wooden rails then came into use with small cars running on them. These cars were very small, usually holding only a few bushels; in the Belleville, Illinois field as late as 1863 cars having capacities of 10, 12, 14 and some as large as 30 bushels were in use. It was not until late in the 1830's that horses or mules came into use for haulage purposes in the Pittsburgh region, although some had been used in the Richmond, Virginia field at an earlier date. Coal was usually undercut by hand and wedged down, until explosives came into general use, and in nearly every field the coal was forked into the cars, the fine coal, or slack, being left in the mine. Hours worked were very long, but few records remain to show what they were at different places and times; there was undoubtedly a great variation between districts and mines. Roy stated a miner could often produce 5 or 6 tons in a day of 8 or 9 hours in a 5 or 6 foot seam, but in another seam possibly could mine only 3 1/2 to 4 tons. He estimated an average day's work in a four foot seam at about 3 1/2 tons.1 In a strike in the Belleville field in 1863 it was found that an average skilled miner in the field could probably produce 4 to 5 tons a day.2 This was only the coarse coal loaded and did not include slack. In 1873, a coal undercutting machine was tried at a mine about two miles from Brazil, Indiana, said to be the first coal machine ever invented in the United States. It was run by a 5 H.P. steam engine (later to be changed to compressed air), and consisted of an iron rim, four feet in diameter with movable steel teeth placed about one foot apart. The rim

An instrument capable of measuring subsurface flow rates is described. The instrument is self-contained and may be run on piano wire line. It detects flow by means of an impeller suspended between two torsion wires. The force of the well fluid striking the impeller causes the impeller to rotate, exerting a torsional force to the wires. This force is determined by recording the angle of rotation of the impeller on film using a battery-driven, clock-controlled camera. The impeller is sensitive to flow in either direction and the same instrument can be used to measure injection as well as production rates. Changes in direction of flow, such as might be caused by thief zones, are measurable and are indicated by a reversal of the direction of rotation of the impeller. Adjustment of the sensitivity of the instrument to measure a wide range of flow rates is accomplished by the use of different size torsion wires. An umbrella-type fluid trap, which contacts the casing or wellbore, diverts the flow through the flow tube. The fluid trap remains closed while rurrning in the hole and can be opened at any point in the well. The instrument with the trap closed is 1 3/4 in. OD and may be run through 2 in. tubing. Successful flow profiles have been made on wells with flow rates ranging from 60 BID to 4,000 B/D at surface pressure up to 4,500 psi. The instrument is designed for high-pressure and high-temperature operations. INTRODUCTION The need for an instrument that will measure flow rates in a wellbore is as old as reservoir engineering itself. A number of such devices have been designed within the past few years. Some of these have been described in the literature1,2,3,4,5,6 One of these devices1. a hot-wire anemometer type, made many successful jobs in dry gas producing areas. Difficulty was encountered when this flowmeter was used in wells producing liquids and development work was initiated to overcome this difficulty. The present flowmeter is the result of this work and provides an instrument with a wider range of application in the industry. Consider- able development work has been done on the tool involving many changes in the mechanics of recording the flow readings, however, the basic principle of flow detection has remained the same since its inception. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION The basic principle of operation of the flowmeter is the utilization of a portion of the kinetic energy of flowing well fluid to impart a rotational force to an impeller suspended between two torsion wires. This impeller, Fig. 1, is a screw-type propeller with the blades having a pitch angle of 40. As the well fluid passes through the instrument it strikes the impeller. The resulting force rotates the impeller and twist\ the torsion wires to a balance point at which the torque imparted to the wires balances the force required for the impeller to deflect the well fluid. The impeller is symmetrical and a change in direction of the flow results in a reversal of the direction in which the impeller is deflected. Thus the direction of the flow as well as its velocity is indicated. A dial is attached to the impeller by means of a hollow tube through which the upper torsion wire extends. The angular position of the impeller is recorded by photographing the dial at frequent intervals. In any given set of torsion wires the modulus of shear and polar moment of inertia remain constant and the deflection varies directly with the applied torque. The deflection imparted to the torsion wires also varies as the square of the fluid velocity. Further, the velocities represented by any two given deflections hear the following relationships: and Where V = velocity of flow stream and O ;= deflection. This is the basic relationship which is used to calculate the relative velocities represented by a given set of deflections where the velocity represented by any one of the deflection readings is a known quantity. NFILTRATION is a term used to designate that i- process by which the pores of a metal powder are filled with a relatively low-melting liquid metal through the action of capillary forces. This is accomplished in practice either by heating the porous body in contact with the solid infiltrant metal above the melting point of the latter, or by preheating the porous body separately and then dipping it into the liquid metal. The liquid, as it sweeps through the porous body, replaces the gases progressively, thus yielding a relatively dense product in a short time.' Liquid-phase sintering, which is related to infiltration, is a process by which a mixture of two or more metal powders is sintered at a temperature between the liquidus and solidus of the ultimate alloy.' According to Cannon" liquid-phase sintering can be divided into three stages which he calls liquid flow, accommodation, and solid sintering. The largest density increase occurs during the first stage, where the lower melting component melts and, driven by capillary forces, flows among the particles of the higher melting component, where, after dissolution of the bonds between the solid particles, it moves them into close packing. This happens so quickly that little has yet been learned of its mechanism. A study of the rate of capillary rise of a liquid metal in a higher melting metal-powder compact may be expected, therefore, to contribute not only to a firmer understanding of the process of infiltration as such but also to a more extensive knowledge of what occurs during the initial stage of liquid-phase sintering. Theoretical Basis In order to derive a mathematical expression of the rate of infiltration, it has been assumed that a powder compact consists of a great many parallel capillary tubes and that the rate of rise of a liquid in an average capillary channel represents the rise in the entire compact. For a straight capillary, assuming that Poiseuille's law obtains for the non-stationary state and that wetting is very rapid, Ligenza and Bernstein' have derived the following differential eauation of motion where h is the height of rise of the column of liquid at time t, R, is the radius and 1 the length of the capillary, t) and 7, the viscosities of liquid and air, respectively, p and p, the density of the liquid and air, respectively, y the liquid-gas surface tension, 0 the liquid-solid contact angle, and g the acceleration due to gravity. The term on the left of Equation [I] represents the rate of change of momentum of the contents of the capillary tube. On the right the terms represent, respectively, the forces due to a) surface tension, b) viscous resistance, c) gravity, and d) end-drag effect. Equation [I] is not amenable to explicit solution, but for a tube of sufficiently small radius, the rate of rise may be slow enough so that the rate of change of momentum and end-drag terms may be neglected. The validity of this simplification was established by Ligenza and Bernstein' by graphical differentiation of observed data obtained from organic liquids rising in glass tubes.
