This title introduces the subject I wish to describe to my fellow members, very few of whom, I 'hope, have ever had as much trouble with the smelting of ore containing much zinc, either in the lead blast furnace or the matting furnace, as circumstances have forced upon me: First, for several years in Leadville, Colo., after the sulphide ores containing zinc had been developed with greater depth and were sold to the intereats with which I was connected for smelt-ing in the blast furnace for the recovery of the lead, silver, and gold; then, in New Mexico and Arizona, where the principal source of ore supply for our custom smelter was from miners who sent most of their product in the form of concentrates, which we briquetted and smelted in the blast furnace, producing a matte containing copper, silver, and gold, for which we were paid; together with some zinc and lead, which was penalized if in excess of a maximum base set by the refinery to which we sold our copper matte; last, but not least, my experience in Shasta county, Gal., where for the sake of recovering $13 per ton value in copper, silver, and gold, I have smelted ore containing as high as 40 per cent. zinc (the last 18,951 tons smelted averaged 15 3/10 per cent. zinc) which we not only lost, but which it cost us money to lose. After such an experience, and knowing that, instead of being worth only $13 per ton, such 15 per cent. zinc ore should be worth about $30, including zinc at the present market value, the question of recovering the zinc in a profitable manner from such ore became very interesting to me. During several years' time I sent samples, of from 5 to 1,200 lb. each, to be tested by the different best-known zinc-recovery plants, and experimented with several processes proposed by others for the treatment of such ore, with but little encouragement, until I

IN previous metallographic work on titanium and its alloys, difficulty has been encountered in distinguishing spheroidal particles of titanium hydride, dispersed in a-titanium, from other phases that may be present, such as p-titanium. This problem is common in examination of commercial unalloyed titanium.' In the course of an investigation of the Ti-H phase diagram, it was noted that titanium hydride, dispersed in a matrix of a-titanium, showed strong optical anisotropy when examined under polarized light. With sensitive tint illumination, particles of the hydride, when the stage is rotated, changed from bright yellow to bright blue in color. Since P-titanium is cubic, it showed no color change on rotation, remaining dark gray or blue-gray. Although a-titanium is hexagonal, it showed only a minor color change, going from pale pinkish-blue to pale purplish-blue. These colors could be modified somewhat by adjustment of the illumination. They were observed in specimens mechanically polished, both without etching and after etching with hydrofluoric acid-nitric acid mixtures in either water or glycerine. The strong color change of the hydride seems to offer a simple method for its metallographic identification. Optical anisotropy of titanium hydride is inconsistent with its accepted face-centered-cubic structure.' Samples of iodide titanium containing 6 to 40 atomic pct deuterium were prepared for diffraction studies. After deuterating and slow cooling' the samples were held 21 % hr at 400 °C, water quenched, held 61 hr at 100°C and quenched, then held 64% hr at 255 C and quenched. Debye ex-posures with MoKa X-rays and 1.111A neutrons were made at room temperature of samples as-deuterated and after the 100" and 255°C treatments. Table I shows the lines observed, in addition to those attributable to a-titanium. These data show that the hydride phase was not cubic, but probably tetragonal. The titanium atoms appeared to form a body-centered-tetragonal lattice complex, two titanium atoms per cell, with approximate dimensions: a = 3.12A, c = 4.18A, and c/a =1.34A. This is equivalent to a face-centered-tetragonal complex, four titanium atoms per cell, with approximate dimensions: a = 4.42A, c = 4.18A, and c/a - 0.946A. The presence of the 2.98 and 1.81A neutron lines indicates that the true Bravais lattice is not identical with this lattice complex, but may be primitive tetragonal with dimensions some multiple of those of the complex. The relative intensities of the hydride and a-titanium X-ray lines as functions of overall composition indicated that the hydride, presumably in equilibrium with the a at 100" to 255"C, contained more than 62 atomic pct H. Condusions. From the work on aluminum powder, the following general con clusions can bc drawn: I. The physical properties of aluminum compacts, such as density. strength and ductility, increase with increasing pressure, up to the practicable pressure limits. 2. Good properties ill aluminum con pacts can be secured only by the use of high pressures, because it is neccssary to rupture the refractory oxide film on aluminum powder. 3. Considerable softening of the specimens occurs upon sintering. regardlers of the pressure used. General Conclusions 1. For relatively short-time sintering. molding pressure is a very important factor in the final physical properties of the sintered specimens. 2. The effect of pressure. is difierent for each metal, so that few general rules can be drawn that would apply to all metals. 3. In many cases, fur a particular metal powder and sintering temperature there is a critical pressure at which the best physical properties can be obtained. 4. The principles of cold work and in nealing and their effect on grain structure applied to massive metal also holds true for sintered metals. 5. Particle size, at least for electrolytic iron powder, does not have a. great effect on ultimate grain six. DISCUSSION [E. E, Schumacher presiding V.. V. A method of determining the lime content of drilling muds proposed by Battle and Chaney* has been examined both in the Field Research Laboratories of Magnolia Petroleum Co. and in field drilling operations. This proposed analytical method is condensed as follows: Titrate one ml of mud and one ml of mud filtrate, each with 0.02 N H2SO4, to the end point with phenolphthalein. The volume of acid in ml required for the mud titration is recorded as Pm and that of the mud filtrate titration as Pf Calculation of the lb lime/bbl mud is accomplished by use of the formula, lb lime/bbl mud = 0.6 (Pm - 1.3Pf) - 0.6 The analytical procedure outlined by Battle and Chaney was found to be quite satisfactory when reasonable precautions are used in mud sampling technique. Calculation of lime concentration by the method proposed in the above publication, however, has given values that varied as much as 100 per cent from the known lime content, for muds of either high or low solids concentration. By use of a formula, lb lime/bbl mud = 0.26 (Pm-F1.Pf), based on chemical equivalents of acid required for titration, both laboratory and field data have been satisfactorily correlated with the known amounts of lime present in the muds. In this formula a correction, F1, or volume fraction of liquid in the mud, is made for the solid content of the mud. Pm and Pf * Paper on "Lime Base Muds," presented by J. L. Table I shows typical data employing both formulas in calculating the lime content of various lime muds. This suggested procedure ignores lime which is in solution in the mud. The solubility of lime in water, normally about 0.5 lb per bbl, is greatly decreased by the addition of caustic soda, and, in a lime mud, it is probable that the concentration of dissolved lime is of the order of 0.1 lb per bbl. Such an amount of lime can be ignored, since it is within the range of accuracy of the method.

LABOR shortages, rising wages, and changes in moisture and fines content of the ore necessitated a review of the flowsheet at Warren Foundry & Pipe Co's. Mt. Hope, N. J. Mines Div. This plant had been designed prior to World War II, and started operations in January 1945. When this operation was designed there was an oversupply of labor in the area, wages were at a reasonable level, the run-of-mine ore was low in moisture, and there was a limited amount of fines. These factors all favored use of hand picking for cleaning rougher lump concentrate. Since that time, many changes have occurred. The proximity of defense industries and large military installations, has created one of the most acute labor shortages in the country. This labor shortage together with present wage levels, and the increase in moisture and fines in the ore created several problems. The increase in moisture and fines may be attributed to changed mining methods, the extensive use of sprays, and the opening of new mining areas bringing an increase in ground water. [ ] Two problems were presented by the increase in moisture and fines. The first was that lump ore arrived at the open hearth in an unacceptable condition, due to the segregation enroute of the large amount of fines that had adhered to the lumps. The second problem was that high magnetite content fines coated the large lumps, making it difficult for pickers to distinguish middling by other than the relative weight. [ ]

THE orientations of tetragonal tin crystals are commonly examined by either the transmission Laue method or the back-reflection Laue method. The predominant planes and zone axes of the pattern are plotted on a Wulff net and indexed by measuring the angles between planes and directions. The problem of identifying the Laue spots has been approached in several different ways. Nicholas 1 tabulated interplanar angles for ten planes but did not relate the angles to permutation of indices or sign. A table of angles between adjacent planes and of angles between adjacent zones was published by Chandrasekhar and veal.' These tables are very helpful, provided the film shows all the low-order zones that occur within about 20 deg of each other. Frounfelker and Hirthe's compilation3 of angles between the (001) plane and twenty-nine other planes is useful for the indexing, only if the (001) spot can be found on the film. For all but the simplest orientations, however, more information is needed to index the diffraction spots. Standard stereographic projections, such as those published by Bicelli, 4 provide part of the information required. By their nature, these projections show the positions of only a few zone axes. In the tetragonal system many low-order zone axes are not normal to the planes having the same indices. Consequently, planes and directions can have entirely different positions on a stereographic projection. For example, the [011] zone axis is 33 deg from the normal to the (011) plane. The crystallographic orientation usually has to be deduced from a combination of the predominant zone axes and a few low-order planes that appear on the film. In addition to a standard stereographic projection of the planes, a stereographic projection of the directions is needed. Such a projection can be constructed from the angles given in Table I. To provide more information about angles between planes and directions, we have calculated interplanar angles up to (332) and angles between planes and directions up to [332] on an IBM 1620 computer. The angles are differentiated according to permutations of sign and indices. Those doing research on tin single crystals are welcome to request a copy of these tables from the authors.

WHEN this Government was founded, the framers of the Constitution wrote into that instrument a provision that Congress should "coin money and fix the value thereof;" and the Constitution prohibits making anything but "gold and silver" lawful money. So silver is written into our basic law. Shortly after President Washington took office in 1789 the Congress passed the first Mint Act, setting up the U. S. Mint. In that Act, signed by President Washington on April 2, 1792, the weight of the American dollar was fixed, and it was provided how much silver should be contained in a silver dollar and how much gold should be contained in a gold dollar. It was decided that 371 1/4 grains of pure silver was to be the standard dollar of America. That standard with respect to the pure silver content of the dollar has never changed.

EFFECT of elements on the solubility of carbon in liquid iron is useful in calculating and correlating a number of thermodynamic properties as shown elsewhere in detail.' Kitchener, Bockris, and spratt2, and later Turkdogan and Hancock3 have investigated the effect of sulfur on the solubility of carbon at various temperatures and concentrations. For any chosen sulfur concentration, the solubility of carbon reported by Kitchener et al. is considerably lower than that by Turkdogan and Hancock. It was therefore felt that a reinvestigation of this problem was necessary. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD An alloy of Fe-C-S .was prepared with electrolytic iron and ferrous sulfide melted by induction in a graphite crucible, 4 in. high 1 1/2 in. ID under a CO-atmosphere. The temperature, held at 1500" ± 5°C in all experiments, was measured with a Pt-Pt + 10 pct Rh thermocouple immersed into the melt. In order to assure saturation with carbon, the melt was stirred with a graphite rod. After approximately 1 hr at 1500 °C, a sample was obtained by sucking the melt into a silica tube, 4 mm ID. The sample was then analyzed for carbon and sulfur by usual methods. RESULTS The results are presented in Table I and plotted in Fig. 1 with the individual values of Turkdogan and Hancock.3 Scattering in the data is equivalent to 3 pct or less in carbon analysis. The broken line represents the empirical equation obtained by Kitchener et al. from their data. It is evident that the present data are in good agreement with those of the former investigators but in disagreement with the latter. The cause for this discrepancy cannot be readily offered since the experimental methods in the three investigations were nearly identical. Additional evidence corroborating the author's results may be presented in the following manner. The difference between the solubilities of carbon in the ternary Fe-C-X melt with a small concentration of any element X, and in the binary Fe-C melt is %?C = %CIII-%CII [1] where %?C is the change in solubility, and %CIII and %CII are the solubilities in the ternary and the binary systems respectively. Discussion of the paper of Mr. Granger, presented at the New Haven meeting, February, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 25, January, 1909, pp. 1 to 37. LEWIS M. HAUPT, Philadelphia, Pa. (communication to the 'Secretary*) :-This subject is of great interest to me, and I am noting progress and conditions as a test of my own judgment in advocating what I believed to be the nearer, cheaper and better route at Nicaraugua. I have as yet learned nothing to change my views, or modify the convictions which led me to retire from the Commission; but that is not the issue to-day. Our government is committed to the Panama route, and is bound to " make good." There are many points presented by Mr. Granger which seem to me worthy of very serious consideration. But when all is said there remains the risk of seismic convulsions, to which either form of canal is subject; and I fail to see that the risk would be reduced by making the cut deeper, with greater surcharge of lateral pressure upon the side walls. A severe earthquake in the rainy season would doubtless close either type of canal. One of the arguments in favor of the Panama route most insisted on, was that Nature had provided good natural harbors at its termini. Recalling this, it has interested me to note that the cost of creating the necessary harbors is estimated at $27,000,000. Mr. Granger refers to this, and quotes the Board's report to the effect that, on the Atlantic side, it will require 5 miles of jetties to " make an excellent harbor out of a wretched one." The vulnerable part of Mr. Granger's paper seems to me to lie in the admission that the plant required is still in the embryonic stage, and that at least one machine should be built and tested " to demonstrate that the theoretical strains and forces work out in practice exactly as expected." IN general, billet-type or long slender ingots are used when it is desired to produce directly from the ingot in one conversion a product of medium or small cross-sectional area. They are designed to eliminate the blooming and billet-mill stages of the usual procedure. As used at Connors, they constitute a means of keeping a continuous rolling mill busy in the production of high-quality small rods, small angles, hoop stock, baling ties and concrete reinforcing rods without the need for a blooming or billet mill. They represent sound steel with the best surface that is commercially practical to use in the rolling of small continuous mill products.

THE following paragraphs comprise such information as the Secretary has been able to obtain concerning the members and associates whose deaths have been reported. Further particulars or corrections of errors, and biographical data concerning deceased members or associates not already noticed in this way, are solicited. [SECRETARY'S NOTE.-All of these notices have been revised, and some of then have been more or less completely prepared, by me. To those which contain more particularly the expression of my personal feeling, my initials have been appended. The labor of preparing or editing these paragraphs has been in many respects both welcome and interesting, on the one hand, and sorrowful, on the other. In going through the list, I have repeatedly felt like one who, visiting the Morgue, suddenly comes upon the pale face of a dear friend, of whose death lie was not aware ; and, even when this fact was known to me, the work of recording it has brought upon me a flood of recollections, almost preventing the discharge of that official duty. The list for 1907 seems to me to he peculiarly sad, comprising, as it does, so many sudden deaths by violence or accident, so many veterans, removed too soon, and so many young men whose early departure impoverishes the future, even more than the present. Probably, this feeling on my part is largely due to the circumstance that the increased membership of the Institute necessarily in¬volves an increase of the annual death-list. Probably, also, it is connected with the circumstance that during the first years of the history of the Institute-say from 1871 to 1880-it was joined by men of all ages, and that the death-rate is consequently now above the average which would result from the normal annual addition, principally of young men. And finally, I must admit that, as one of the original members of the Institute, and practically connected with it for nearly thirty-seven years as Acting President, President or Secretary, I am peculiarly impressed and depressed by the successive deaths of those who were my associates in the years of its early struggles and triumphs. I do not wish to inflict upon my younger colleagues the melancholy reflections of an increasingly lonesome old man. In fact, my prevailing mood concerning the Institute is not at all melancholy, but triumphant and hopeful. If I may be permitted to preach at all, I would enforce, from the texts given below, a moral which many of them declare so forcibly as to preclude the necessity of expository enforcements-namely, the duty of every one of us, old or young, to give to his brethren, as he goes along, and without waiting for some future occasion for a comprehensive and monumental contribution to technical literature, the results of his observation and experience. DURING the production of tin plate a thin layer of FeSn2, is formed at the interface between the steel sheet and the protective tin coating. Because excessive amounts of this alloy layer are undesirable, the kinetics of its formation is a subject of interest in the tin-plate industry. A recent study of this subject at our laboratory uncovered a relationship which should be of general interest to anyone studying kinetics of reactions in metallic systems. It had been previously concluded that, at any given temperature in the range 175" to 330°C, the Fe-Sn alloy layer would have a parabolic growth rate.1,2 However, our studies showed that this rule apparently holds only when the tin plate is heated very slowly to the "reaction" temperature; when the tin plate is rapidly heated, considerably different growth rates occur. An example of this effect of heating rate on growth behavior is contained in the accompanying results of alloy-layer growth measurements at 240°C in oil baths stirred at 10,500, 1800, and 0 rpm. The heating curves for these three conditions are given in Fig. 1, and the growth data are presented in Fig. 2. With the rapid heating rate, provided by the stirring at 10,500 rpm, the alloy layer had three distinct stages of growth. In the initial stage, which persisted well beyond the time required to heat the tin plate to bath temperature, the alloy layer formed very rapidly. The growth followed a rate law of the form w = ktn where n > 1. This initial stage was followed by a growth-retardation stage of about 50-sec duration in which little additional alloy was formed. In the third stage the growth again followed a rate law of the form w = ktn, but here « =0.3. With the intermediate heating rate provided by stirring at 1800 rpm, the three-stage nature was less pronounced and the slope of the third stage increased (i.e., n > 0.3). With the slow heating rate provided by the unstirred oil bath, the alloy layer grew in two stages. The initial rapid-growth stage persisted only until the specimen was heated to bath temperature, no growth retardation was observed, and the slope of the main portion of the plotted data was greater than in the stirred baths, having a value of almost 0.5. Similar results were obtained for other bath temperatures in the range 200" to 300°C. This effect of heating rate on growth behavior may be due to changes in the rate of nucleation of FeSn, crystallites. The iron and tin are in contact from the onset of heating. Thus the initial formation of FeSn, occurs not at the "reaction" temperature but rather while the tin plate is being heated to that temperature. Because nucleation is in general temperature-dependent, different heating rates could cause different over-all nucleation rates, which in turn could cause different growth behaviors. A more detailed discussion of the growth of Fe-Sn alloy layer and the effect of heating rate will be published shortly.

WAR undoubtedly accelerates metallurgical progress, although its most obvious effect is a tremendous waste of materials. The necessity for restrictions in normal uses of metals results in a search for substitutes or for enhanced properties that will make a limited supply last longer. An insatiable demand for more metal to be produced more quickly favors trial of new processes, new metallurgical tools, and new methods of fabrication. Greatest advance is made, of course, in practical physical and process metallurgy. Theoretical or fundamental research necessarily must take a secondary position, and is so regarded in this review. It is not that developments in theoretical physical metallurgy are lacking entirely, but, following the same trend noted in other countries as they entered war activities, attention in the U.S.A. has been shifted strongly to those developments having an immediate practical application.

DURING the past few years a marked refinement has taken place in the design of electric power shovels for the mining industry, increasing their digging ability and speed of operation without adding to their total weight. The increase in pay load has been accomplished by a more rigid engineering analysis of shovel design, involving the adoption of new special alloy steels, new sections, and new welding methods. Emphasis has been placed on lightness with increased strength, which is most clearly shown in the front-end equipment where dipper, handle and boom are new in design, material, and construction.

The pellet plant, built by Dravo Corp, in Groveland, Mich., for the Hanna Mining Co., is now in full operation. Although using jasper, a type of iron ore with low iron content (approximately 28% Fe), the plant has a rated capacity of 1,250,000 tans of pellets per year. In its four years of existence, the nearby concentrating plant has seen its capacity increase from 700,000 tons to 1,500,000 tons a year as part of a major expansion program at Groveland. Utilizing the Dravo-Lurgi continuous grate process, the pellet plant produces %a-in. pellets of more than 60% iron content. The fully-hooded pelletizing grate, largest in the U.S., is 9 ft. 10% in. wide and 223 ft. 1% in. tong over 34 windboxes, with an effective hearth area of 2195 sq. ft. Drying, firing, and cooling functions are all carried out on this single piece of equipment.

When bronze is melted in open-flame furnaces a considerable amount of slag is formed during the melting operation. This slag may be incidental to the melting practice or it may be formed intentionally by slag-forming constituents added to the furnace charge to provide a covering for the melted metal When this slag is removed from the furnace, it contains, in addition to the free metal carried with it by the skimming operation, a considerable amount of metal as oxide either combined or mechanically mixed with it. By the usual crushing and washing methods this metallic oxide generally goes to the tailings pile, so diluted by other foundry waste that its recovery is economically impossible. If this furnace slag is not inixed with other foundry waste, practically all of the metal oxide as well as the free metal may be recovered by some form of smelting operation. The first side of the problem to be considered is the amount of slag produced. It may not be true that the majority of foundries have no record of the amount of slag made, but it is certainly true that a very great many either have no record or pay little attention to it. Usually the collection of furnace slag for one normal week's run will be sufficient to determine the advisability of its being handled in a different manner from the crushing and concentrating generally employed. If a large representative sample of the accumulation is crushed and concentrated and the recovery compared with the results of a careful assay, it will be found that a large percentage of the total metal content was lost in the washing process. The percentage of loss will be greater than the metallic oxide content, as some free metal in extremely fine particles always is carried away in grains of slag. From such a comparison, it may be determined whether or not the slag should be melted, sold or treated as before. An example of an actual test of this kind is given below. AS a result of drilling operations during 1943, West Texas again added sufficient new oil reserves to replace the oil produced during the year, but failed to maintain its position in currently available reserves because the deeper discoveries will require years for development. Drilling failed to provide the additional oil necessary to meet the increase in current and anticipated market demand. Although 13.3 per cent of the total footage drilled was in wildcat exploration, the ratio of oil discoveries to total wildcats was less in 1943 than in 1942, but comparable to that in 1941. Of the 732 field wells completed, 270 were at Slaughter, 55 at Wasson, 45 at Mascho and 31 at North Cowden. As of Dec. 31, 1943, there were 361 drilling wells including 71 wildcat and 290 field wells; 19.7 per cent were wildcats. It is anticipated that the percentage of wildcats of the total wells will be higher during 1944 than in either 1942 or 1943. Tables 3 and 4 present a three-year comparison of drilling activity and illustrate the downward trend of development that has been in effect during that time. Because of development lag in the deeper Ordovician fields, several years elapse before 2 sufficient number of wells is completed to give a substantial producing rate. As these new oil reserves cost more to find, and will cost more to produce on a barrel basis than the oil marketed during the year, their reserve replacement value to the industry is less in money. Costs While complete costs for deeper drilling are not yet available for analysis, it is evi- dent from the data on drilling rates to comparable depths, contract prices, and general increases in costs, that the cost of drilling has risen approximately 20 per cent during the year. One representative drilling contractor estimates that the average drilling time on a 5000-ft. field well has increased nearly one third and that out-of-pocket costs have increased a dollar per foot. Three major factors contribute to this increased cost: (I) less experienced labor, (2) deterioration in mechanical equipment and expendable material, and (3) increased contract prices. In the past, when there were more drilling rigs than wells to be drilled, some contractors would cut their drilling profit to keep their personnel and rigs working. As this practice is no longer necessary, the contract prices are adjusted upward to assure a profit. On deep and difficult drilling, contracts are let on a cost plus basis. A number of mechanical difficulties have become evident. Inferior quality of steel used in drill pipe and rock bits has added appreciably to drilling time and cost. Contractors are experiencing delay in obtaining repair work and repair parts for prime movers. As the length of drilling time required an shallow-field wells has not increased in proportion to that on deeper wells, it seems that the medium-sized drilling rig is better adapted mechanically than the heavy one to the work imposed. One of the main deficiencies in the heavy rig equipment is inadequate pump capacity. THIS paper discusses elementary laws pertaining to seismic reflection methods and presents a general and simple criterion for determining the direction of dipping of a reflection horizon from observational data of distance and time. The important development of practical geophysics and the successful results obtained in America, Germany, and other countries, caused introduction of geophysical methods of prospecting in Poland. Of all methods, seismic prospecting has proved most successful in the area of the Carpathian foreland, where new oil reserves are to be expected. Because of the great depth of the sedimentary column in that area, rang-ing sometimes over 2000 meters, it was obvious that only the seismic reflection method could give reliable information regarding the structural features of these strata at such a depth. During the experimental surveys it appeared that the complicated geological conditions of that area do not always allow prediction of the depth and the angle of dipping of reflecting horizons, and for that reason information about the inclination of a given horizon has great importance in the determination of subsurface structure. Therefore the problem arises of obtaining from seismic reflection data reliable information as to the direction of dipping of reflecting strata, without any previous knowledge of the average velocity and depth of geologic horizons under consideration.
