THE art of mine surveying has made very great progress in recent years, and is still advancing, perhaps faster than any other branch of surveying. The scope of the mine surveyor's duties has greatly increased, his instruments and methods have improved, the responsibility of his position is greater, and the end is not yet in sight.It might be supposed that such a steadily growing subject would have an adequate literature, but this is by no means the case and outsiders commonly judge mine surveyors by their text-books. Hardly any condemnation can be too strong for most of these books. The English books truckle to the antiquated and crude methods apparently still in use in England, and thereby largely aid in perpetuating them; they commonly in illustrative examples give the distances in fathoms, feet, and inches; they spend page after page discoursing on instruments that should have been forgotten long ago; they try to antagonize theory and practice by detailing such calculations as that a certain vein will contain 2,003.907 pounds of galena per square fathom, and then reduce this amazing quantity to hundredweights, quarters, and pounds. Nothing can be more unscientific, or, for that matter, less businesslike, than unwarranted assumptions of accuracy; it is, perhaps, the greatest curse of applied science. Here we have a calculation to thethousandth part of a pound, when there is probably an unavoidable error of two hundred pounds. What shall we say of a man who explains how to measure the depths of shafts to the hundredth part of an inch by means of short brass rods screwed together...

As part of a national canvass of water use the Bureau of Mines compiled data on water requirements in the petroleum and natural gas industries for the calendar year 1962, specifically in well drilling, secondary-recovery operations, and natural gas processing plants. Total new water use in the petroleum industry of the United States, excluding refining, was 5.3 billion barrels. Secondary-recovery operations and natural gas processing plants required about 2.5 billion barrels of new water input; each of these requirements was about eight times greater than that for well drilling. Total use, including recirculated water, was 45.3 billion barrels of which 3.4 billion barrels was consumed. The greatest use of recirculated water was for natural gas processing, amounting to 38.2 billion barrels. Projections of total water use show that by 1975, 75.4 billion barrels will be used by the petroleum industry, of which 10.2 billion barrels will be new water. By 1985, the total use requirement will be 92.8 billion barrels, of which 13.1 billion barrels will be new water.

Reports for the calendar year 1923 that have been transmitted to the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior by mine officials of the various coal-producing States show that accidents in and around the coal mines resulted in the death of 2,452 men. The output of coal during the year, as reported to the United States Geo- logical Survey, was 641,476,000 tons; hence the fatality rate per million tons was 3.82 as compared with 4.15 for 1922, a decline of about 8 per cent. The average rate for the decade ending with 1922 was 4.11. This reduction of 8 per cent in the fatal-accident rate per million tons is equivalent to the saving of 210 lives--that is, had the fatality rate of 1922 continued through 1923 the number of lives lost would have been 210 more than they actually were. Not only was there a net reduction in the fatality rate from all causes combined, but each of the main causes of coal-mine fatalities also showed a decline. Falls of roof and coal, which generally account for nearly half of all deaths in coal mines, were responsible for 1,158 fatalities in 1923, which represents a rate of 1.81 per million tons as compared with 1.90 in 1922. (See Table 2.) Haulage accidents underground usually cause about 17 per cent of all fatalities, and the reports for 1923 show that 413 deaths were due to this cause, indi- cating a rate of 0.64 per million tons, as against 0.71 for the previous year. Gas and dust explosions killed 372 men, the fatality rate being 0.58; the rate for 1922 was 0.65. Seventy-five deaths were due to electricity, for which class of accidents the fatality rate per million tons was 0.12 as compared with 0.16 the year before. Powder and other explosives caused 114 deaths, representing a rate of 0.18 as compared with 0.19 for 1922. Of the 2,452 fatal accidents during the year, 2,249 occurred under- ground, 46 in shafts, and 157 on the surface. "Porphyry copper deposits are the most important source of copper and also gold within the orogenic belts. These deposits are characterized by low grade copper ore (0.2% to 1% copper) and host precious metals like gold, silver and platinum. A characterization tool has been developed for complex porphyry type copper-gold deposits with an aim to quantify copper and precious metal deportment. This quantification is a challenging task due to low grades and also due to the presence of both visible and invisible precious metal content in different sulphide and non-sulphide phases. Studies were initiated on various complex ore deposits and also on samples representing various processing streams such as flotation and leach products. This paper presents the development of a systematic approach to diagnostic metallurgy using state-of-the-art optical and automated mineralogy, micro-probe, dynamic SIMS and TOF-SIMS analysis for quantification of invisible and visible precious metals content in various species. The relevance of this characterization to metallurgy will also be briefly discussed in this paper.INTRODUCTIONA novel characterization tool has been developed for double refractory gold ores and complex copper-gold ores using state-of-the-art technology for quantitative gold and copper deportment study. The characterization of these ores is a challenging task due to low copper and gold grades in ores, presence of both primary and secondary copper sulphide phases and variable proportion of visible and invisible gold in different sulphides phases (pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite) and iron oxide phases (magnetite, hematite and goethite). A study was initiated on various ore deposits and also on samples representing various processing streams of pilot plant batches such as flotation concentrates and tailings. This paper attempts to discuss the deportment characterization methodology through presenting results from investigations on four samples from a flotation circuit viz, Feed, Final concentrate, Cleaner Scavenger Tail and Rougher Tail samples. These four samples represent the key streams for a typical copper-gold flotation flow sheet. The key objective of this investigation was to identify and quantify visible and invisible gold along with understanding the morphology and liberation of gold associated with various sulphides, Fe- Oxides and non-sulphide gangue species. In addition, the aim of this study was also to relate this mineralogical and gold deportment information to metallurgical performance."

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines report is to describe the methods and establish the basic economics for dragline, shovel-truck, and scraper mining systems. An overall view of the techniques of preliminary design and the cost involved is presented. Considerations of equipment selection, emphasizing short-range evaluation of required equipment, and a long-range evaluation are considered at a constant production rate over the life of a hypothetical mine. Separate cost analyses for each system were based on 1977 equipment prices, prevailing wage rates, and associated mining costs. Specific engineering and cost breakdown for such items as access roads, transmission line installation, rail spurs, etc., are beyond the scope of this report.

The problem of removing hydrogen sulphide from natural gas has become within the last few years one of major importance to the natural gas and petroleum industry. Several gas fields in the United States produce natural gas containing hydrogen sulphide, and a number of oil fields produce gas which contains hydrogen sulphide. 3 The percentage of hydrogen sulphide in natural gas produced in these fields varies from a fraction of 1 per cent t6 as high as 20.5 per cent by volume. 4 Hydrogen sulphide is probably the most toxic gas associated with natural gas,5 and from the standpoint of health and safety it is important that the hydrogen sulphide be removed if the gas is to be used for domestic purposes. Hydrogen sulphide, besides being toxic and therefore a hazard to animal life, is under certain conditions an active corrosive agent and very destructive to equipment. 6 The annual loss caused by the corrosive action of hydrogen sulphide on equipment amounts to hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of dollars. 7 The largest percentage of natural gas produced in the United States comes from wells which also produce oil. This associated gas invariably carries with it light fractions of petroleum, which when separated from the gas, condense to the liquid form at ordinary temperatures and pressure. Commercial application is made of this natural condition, and "wet gas" is processed to obtain so-called natural gasoline by employing the principles of absorption, adsorption, or compression and subsequent expansion accompanied by cooling. Many accidents rightly classifiable as electrically caused are not so classified for the reason that in numerous accidents the part that electricity played in causing the fatality is only suspected. For instance, a workman might receive a shock that would cause him to lose his balance and fall beneath a trip of cars; if no one saw the first part of the accident, the cause undoubtedly would be charged to "haulage." This paper covers a brief study of fatal and nonfatal electrical accidents. The first usually result from direct contact with the electrical circuit or electrical apparatus; the second more often are the result of arcing or flashing due to handling defective apparatus or making repairs on "live" equipment or circuits. It is hoped that helpful suggestions may be offered for minimizing accidents of these two classes.

DOUG HALBE: Second in our quick run-through on "Operating Ideas That Have Saved Me Some Bucks," was Debbie Laney of Rayrock Mines. Debbie apologizes. She can't be here. But she said, "Doug, don't worry. I've asked Mary Korpi to present the paper. We're both short, blond, and wear glasses. Nobody will know." [laughter] Mary, I caught it right away. You ladies can't fool us. Debbie, who wrote the paper, has spent almost her entire career in operations. She is currently metallurgical manager of Rayrock Mines in Valmy, Nevada. Mary Korpi is also a real operator (that doesn't sound right). She has been responsible for a number of operating areas at Newmont's Nevada operations, and she is currently taking a break from operations as manager of public relations/employee communications for Newmont Gold in Carlin. MARY KORPI: They told us this year at Newmont that we were going to have to work twice as hard. I had no idea it meant I would have to work for another company, too. Over the years, and many times in association with work for mid- to small-size mining companies, there have been two areas that seem to have been the focus of cost savings when looking at new facilities or new processes.

The design and construction of foundations for power transmission line towers present some special problems. This paper describes a system of design and construction for these foundations that was developed in Europe and has attained general use there because of its reliability and cost effectiveness. Transmission line foundations distinguish themselves by having to deal not only with compressive and lateral loads, but with uplift loads and, because of the wind (in some regions earthquakes), with dynamic loading. The construction of transmission line foundations distinguishes itself mainly in the great number of inaccesible locations involved, resulting in extensive geotechnical investigation and logistical problems in moving men, materials and equipment.

A maximum acceptable level of 2 mg/m3 of respirable coal mine dust in active mine workings was established, effective January 1, 1973, under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. It is generally agreed that, as a result, coal mines in the United States are significantly less dusty than they were a decade ago. For example, operators of underground mining machines were exposed to between 3.9 and 6.5 mg/m3 of respirable coal mine dust during 1968-69; now they are exposed to between 1.3 and 1.8 mg/m3. Also, the incidence of underground sections cited for exceeding acceptable levels of respirable coal mine dust decreased during 1976-78, and the vast majority of all working sections are now in compliance. This improvement is very substantial by world standards. It must be regarded as a creditable accomplishment by the coal mine operators, federal agencies, and mine workers involved. Most of the improvement has been brought about by the use of existing technology to control, suppress, and collect respirable coal mine dust. Research and development by the Bureau of Mines has contributed significantly to the accomplishment by improving the methods for sampling, control, suppression, and collection.

"The comminution energy curve is a profoundly simple graphical technique that displays detailed operating efficiency information for industrial comminution processes. The database underlying the methodology has recently more than doubled, to now contain a substantial fraction of the international comminution output (1.7 billion tonnes of rock per year) across more than 8 major commodities. This increase has deepened the analytical capabilities and effectiveness for assessing comminution circuit performance in relation to comparable operating mines. This paper will explore how the energy curve methodology can be used to examine the ability of stirred mill technologies to increase efficiency.Specifically, this paper explores how the energy curves methodology can be used to present energy efficiency gains achieved at three mines employing a stirred mill technology under different duties. The first of these cases studies was conducted by Rosa (2014) who compared the performance of two ball mills operating in parallel with a Vertimill in the regrinding circuit at the Samarco Iron project in South East Brazil. The Vertimill was found to achieve the same product specification while consuming 40% less energy. Brissette (2010) investigated the impact of grinding media on the performance of both ball mills and Vertimills. The energy savings achieved varied from 10% to 40% for the ball mills and 30% to 60% for the Vertimills. Lastly, Bergerman (2012) investigated the operating conditions of the Sossego regrind circuit from 2006 to 2011 against design specifications and laboratory testing. The operating work index of this circuit varied from 5.2 kWh/t to 44 kWh/t over this 5 year period. The full suite of energy curves"

One of the most notable achievements of the iron and steel industry in the United States in this century has been the general increase in productivity of individual blast furnaces and the reduction in coke rate. Most of the improvement in furnace operations has occurred within the past decade. During this time the output of the average furnace increased about one-third, while fuel rates decreased from 15 to 20 percent. For example, in 1949, the iron and steel industry produced 811.2 short tons of pig iron per blast-furnace day with a coke rate of 1,870.4 pounds per ton of pig iron, By 1960, the average production of pig iron per blast-furnace day had risen to 1,182.4 tons, while the coke rate had decreased to 1,497 pounds per ton of pig iron. These figures are averages for the entire industry; many furnaces produced over 2,000 tons per day and one furnace, operating on pellets, reached 2,700 tons of pig iron per day, Coke rates of individual furnaces varied, but some furnaces operated on less than 1,200 pounds per ton of pig iron. The significance of this decrease in coke rate is shown clearly when data on pig-iron production and coke consumption in 1959 are compared with 1948. In 1948, 57.3 million short tons of coke was charged into blast furnaces to produce 60.1 million tons of pig iron; in 1959 only 47.6 million tons of coke was needed to produce 60.2 million tons of pig iron. Thus, in 1959, nearly 10 million tons less coke was required to produce about the same amount of pig iron as was produced in 1948.

In January we published a questionnaire asking about the content of MINING ENGINEERING and about your interests. At the same time we hired an outside firm, READEX Inc., of St. Paul, MN, to send the same questionnaire to a sampling of about 1000 US members, selected on an nth name basis, so that we could have some preliminary numbers for the Annual Meeting in February. READEX sent us the final results of its survey in March. At that time, 525 responses of the 992 surveys sent out had been returned, for a 52.9% response, an extraordinarily high return for a low-key (no incentive for return) random sampling. On May 7, we cut off on tabulating returns from the magazine so that we could report the results to you in this issue. At that time, we had 594 questionnaires returned. Our 594 and READEX's 525 (we have assumed that relatively few people returned both), represent a 1119 return, about 3.5% of the approximately 32,000 who received the January issue of ME. About ME Through responses to the questionnaire, we were hoping to learn more about you, your interests, and how the magazine could better serve you. Those of you who responded, told us something positive-you look at or read the magazine. Of the 1119 respondents, 1068 or 95.4% indicated that they had read or looked through the November and/or December issues. Those of you who refer to the magazine once are 466 or 42.6%. Those of you who refer to the magazine two or three times are 559 or 51.1%. Those of you who refer to the magazine four or more times are 68 or 6.2%. How much time do you spend reading the magazine? Of those responding to this question: 186 spent up to 1/2 hr 16.6% 590 spent up to 1 hr 52.7% 292 spent 1-2 hr 26.1% 51 spent more than 2 hr 4.6% In an informal survey among our staff, we determined that most people spend 1/2 to 1 hr reading magazines to which they subscribe at home. Does that match your experience? Many of you, 764 or 69.4%, clip your magazine for further reference. Also, many of you, 513 or 64.2%, do not pass your copy on to another reader, indicating perhaps that you are clipping it or receiving the magazine at home. Those magazines that are passed on reach: 2 people - 159 - 20.0% 3-5 people - 95 - 11.9% 5 or more - 31 - 3.9% Answers to what portions of the magazine you find useful indicated that the top three were Industry News, feature articles, and Technical Papers; see Table 1. The "other" category included advertising-display, classified, and employment-Coming Events, product information, Washington Survey, new books, the reader service card, and Engineering Fundamentals. Of those responding, 797 or 75.3% indicated a preference for dual notation of SI (metric) with English units; 228 or 21.5% preferred all SI units; while 34 or 3.2% preferred SI with dual notation of other metric units. Based on the preliminary numbers reported by READEX for this question, the MINING ENGINEERING Committee in February voted to return to a policy of dual notation. This decision has been implemented. We asked for your appraisal of the technical level of the magazine. Of those responding, 78 or 7.4% indicated it is too technical, 147 or 13.8% indicated it is not technical enough, and 836 or 78.8% judged it to have the correct tech¬nical level. In response to the question about whether you like to read an occasional feature that is not technically oriented, 32 said no, but an overwhelming 97% (1024) said yes. Development of the Northeast Layback of Barrick’s Betze-Post open pit commenced in June 2000 and was successfully completed to a height of 400m (1,300 ft) in January 2003. Following a brief exploration drilling campaign at the toe of the final slope, in-pit waste rock backfilling commenced, which will ultimately buttress the final wall. Instability initially occurred in late 2000, above the 5040 Level, as the slope height approached 120m (400 ft). As mining reached the 4680 Level, significant deformation was experienced over a slope height of 230m (760 ft). Slope stability was managed and targeted reserve recovery was achieved by executing complicated modifications of the mine plan, including splitting layback development, well placed offloading cuts, step-outs and mid-slope waste rock buttresses. Decision on timing of these modifying events was often dictated by review of deformation magnitudes and rates determined from continuous slope monitoring records. Design modifications were developed through continuing interpretive refinement of structural geology controls and groundwater distribution, and through stability re-assessments. This document presents an overview of the geological setting and material and strength conditions of the northeast sector of the Betze-Post open pit, followed by development experience leading to design and development of the Northeast Layback. Rock mechanics modeling, design details and geotechnical performance monitoring are then presented. Development experience, stabilizing adjustments to the original design and safety procedures for development and exploration activities are described. The document is finalized with conclusions and acknowledgements.

There are many methods for determining the meridian, but all of those in common use involve at least two separate observations, one for latitude and one for azimuth. Such observations made upon a south star at any hour are open to the objection of possible inaccuracy due to ignorance of the absolute refraction, and also to slow change in the altitude of the star when near the meridian. The method of observing a circum-polar star at elongation. besides requiring a separate observation for latitude, is open to the serious objection that clouds may obscure the star at the critical moment. Moreover, a tedious wait for the star to come to elongation is sometimes necessary. Many of us can recall 'long, cold, weary vigils, waiting for Polaris to reach elongation. For observing a circumpolar star at any hour, not only the latitude, but also the true time, must be known. This it is practically impossible to obtain, except in regions reached by the telegraph, and usually then one has to know the longitude also, in order to reduce " standard time" to " local time." The results obtained by this method, when the star is at culmination, are not very good, unless the true local time is absolutely known. The methods of obtaining the nleridian from the sun, by means of a solar attachment, or by direct observation, while good, are not absolute, by reason of refraction, change in declination of the sun, and small change in vertical angle, when the sun is near the meridian. For these two methods, latitude, time, and approximate longitude have to be known. In the method here described, only one observation is needed, and from it are computed azimuth, latitude, aud sidereal time. In other words, one call observe a circumpolar star—Polaris

Australian researchers have developed new technologies aimed at improving safety and productivity at openpit mines. A data acquisition and feedback system for electric rope shovels has been shown to substantially reduce cycle times and decrease excessive machine duty caused by stalls. This data acquisition system was developed by the Cooperative Research Center for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE). It has been tested on a P&H 4100A shovel at Coal & Allied’s Hunter Valley operations and a P&H 4100XPB at BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance’s Goonyella Riverside Mine in Central Queensland. In addition, CMTE member P&H Mine Pro Services has used the technology to acquire field data from a P&H 4100XPBrope shovel at RAG’s Belle Ayr Mine in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin.

"Introduction**The progress of the ""Safety First"" movement in the oil fields of California during the past few years has been remarkably rapid. It has been generally concede by those who have learned to value the life and limbs of their employees, that safety is essential to efficiency and no company that has a high accident rate can be considered an efficient organization. Accidents have a destructive effect on the morale of any body of workers and cause disorganization and delays.The increasing danger to life and limb involved in the drilling for and the production of oil and gas, has become so great that it is clearly evident that everything possible must be done to keep it within the narrowest possible limits.There is a tendency toward carelessness, especially by men who are employed in hazardous occupations. This is brought about by the familiarity of the risk under which they are working and in no industry is this more forcibly exemplified than in the oil fields. Men have performed the same or similar duties for many years and have worked around similar hazards and unprotected machinery until many have can entire disregard for the dangers surrounding then. Very often familiarity with a hazard occasions a contempt for that hazard which only too often results disastrously."
