The number of Persons fatally injured in the petroleum industry in California in 1930 was 50, a decrease of 20.6 per cent from 1929, when 63 men accidentally lost their lives. The decrease in the number of fatalities for 1930 has caused the first downward trend in the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry since 1927 and is coincident with a period of little active development in new fields, the shutting in of many wells, and reduced activity in the older fields of the State. That a direct relationship exists between the number of accidental deaths and the rapidity of new field development is particularly emphasized by the fact that in 1929, a year of intensive field development in California, 48 men were killed in the drilling and producing division, whereas in 1930, a year of less development work, only 25 men were killed in this division. The figures for the average number of drilling and producing wells in 1930 decreased appreciably from comparable figures for 1929 and a greater percentage of producing wells were shut-in in 1930 than in 1929.

Gold has been demonstrated as a possible catalyst for oxidation reactions. Some evidence for a possible promotion effect of platinum has also been recorded. The influence of platinum as promoter for Au/?-Al2O3 prepared via anionic ion-exchange for the oxidation of glycerol was investigated in a batch reactor at 60°C. It is inferred that the addition of platinum reduces the catalytic activity and therate of deactivation, resulting in an overall higher final conversion of glycerol with increasing platinum loading. The addition of platinum to the catalyst favours the formation of the desired product, glyceric acid.

"The application of geometallurgy and corresponding sample selection can take on several formats within industry. Current practice can range from a strictly geostatistical approach to one in which geological and metallurgical parameters are used in combination to create a representative sample selection strategy. The stage of a project and the level of information available at the time of sampling influences the methodology used to create a representative sample.A geometallurgical study of Carpathian Gold’s Rovina Valley Project in Romania is used to demonstrate a sample selection strategy that integrates geological, mineralogical and metallurgical data to maximize the relevance of the geometallurgical unit definitions. This approach, practiced by Xstrata Process Support for its’ clients, ensures that the results of the metallurgical program can be interpreted in the context of these units.INTRODUCTIONGeometallurgy is a cross disciplinary approach in which metallurgical performance of an ore is linked to intrinsic geological and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of a geometallurgical study is to characterize the range of metallurgical performance of an orebody. This allows the geoscientist or metallurgist to create a robust flowsheet able to treat the full range in variability and to develop production strategies to maximize financial performance. The standard approach is to individually sample and test a series of ore types or geometallurgical units. Several different approaches are used in industry to define what constitutes geometallurgical units and how to sample them.One current methodology is the use of multivariate statistics. Geochemical data along with available geological data are used to define multiple variability domains (Williams, 2004; Walters, 2009). There are risks associated with this methodology since the extent of the data set itself may not support a purely statistical approach at the time that metallurgical units need to be defined. The assay suite collected by exploration programs is often limited to pay metals while metallurgical performance is often affected by ore gangue components. Furthermore, in many cases metallurgical scoping and pre-feasibility studies take place prior to the availability of extensive geochemical data sets. Purely statistical methods can produce multiple populations which require extensive sampling, testing and validation prior to consolidation into a reasonable number of composites for metallurgical testing. Methodologies are therefore required that allow representative sampling and testing of consolidated geometallurgical composites to occur at various phases throughout the development of a mining project."

An attempt has been mace in this publication to present annotated references to all articles pertaining, to ore dressing that were published during 1931 and 1932; in a few instances reference is made to articles published prior to 1931 where the articles have not been included in previous bibliography appended to the annual statistical discussions of ore concentration published by the Bureau of Mines. Articles have been taken from more than 75 periodicals, journals, serials, etc., and 423 articles are abstracted herewith. A number of these abstracts, particularly those appearing in foreign publications, have been taken from Chemical Abstracts (published by the American Chemical Society, Easton, Pa.), the general use of which the authors wish to acknowledge. Other annotations were taken directly from the original publications. The entire field of ore dressing has been included in the bibliography and articles dealing with crushing, grinding classification, concentration, thickening, and filtration have been included, as well as on amalgamation, cyanidation, leaching, magnetic concentration, washing, etc., and on theory and laboratory operation. The articles are arranged in alphabetical order by authors. Lack of printing funds prohibited the inclusion of a subject index.

This report summarizes the activities performed and the results achieved during a two-phased investigation of the technical and economic feasibility of disposing of coal mine refuse underground in active mines, Three coal regions in the United States that are most severely affected by coal refuse disposal problems are identified: southwestern Pennsylvania, southern West Virginia, southwestern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky. For each region, a conceptual mine model is presented that describes the geologic conditions, mining methods, and environmental circumstances typical of that region. The model mine that was prepared for the Kanawha Region in Southwestern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky was selected as the basis for developing alternative conceptual designs of underground disposal systems in the second phase of this investigation. Procedures used in selecting the regions and in modeling typical mines are described in Part I of the report. Part II of the report describes existing methods for stowing refuse underground, presents three alternative conceptual designs of stowing system that would be appropriate for the model mine postulated in the first phase of the study, discusses technical characteristics and environmental effects relative to the various systems, and evaluates the technical and economic feasibility of the three alternative disposal system designs. Comparisons costs among systems and with costs or surface disposal are presented.

The preeipitation of dissolved lead from a strong brine by metallic iron is a chemically controlled, first order reaction. The precipitation rate is sensitive to changes in chloride concentration and temperature. The precipitation of dissolved silver is a diffusion controlled, first order reaction. The precipitation rate is insensitive to changes in chloride concentration and temperature.INTRODUCTIONLead and silver sulphates can be extracted from electrolytic zinc plant tailings, or residues, by leaching with strong brine solutions, the lead and silver going into solution as complex chlorides. One of the methods which can then be used to recover the dissolved lead and silver is to precipitate them with metallic iron. The deposition reactions which take place are of the type Pb++ Fe - Fe++ Pb............ (a)To fit such a method of precipitation successfully into a practical flowsheet it is necessary to have some knowledge of the kinetics of the various reactions, Le. to know how the precipitation rates vary with temperature, brine and metal concentrations, and so on. Reaction rates are also needed to design suitable precipitation vessels. However, when examining the possibility of using a brine leaching process to extract the lead and silver from the residue produced at the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia, it was found that, although the use of metallic iron to recover lead and silver from the pregnant brine had been reported by Ralston (1924) and by TrumbulI, Hardiek and Lawford (1948), very little was known about the precipitation reactions. The author would like to refer to his contribution to the paper `Design of pillar systems in South Africa' by Ozbay et al. 1. The authors agreed `wholeheartedly that further research, together with carefully planned field trials, in pursuit of this potentially highly rewarding concept' of the small span small pillar method is warranted. On 30 September 2010 the author went underground at the Kroondal Chrome Mine to observe how the concept of smaller spans was being applied. He was pleasantly surprised to find that the typical coal mine bord and pillar sytem was being used very successfully. Although the deepest mining was taking place at a depth of only 450 metres, Kroondal would be an ideal mine to do further research together with carefully planned field trials. At Crown Mines Gold Mine, where the author worked, he was informed that the first recorded rockburst took place at a depth of 635 metres below surface. The depth of the platinum and chrome mines is increasing, with the risk of an excalation in injuries and fatalities due to 'backbreaks' and siesmic activity. The rock engineer at Kroondal was not aware of backbreaks occuring on the mine. It is important that the rock engineers of the base mineral and gold mines get together and give more serious attention to the host rock environment in which the pillars are situated.

To many people, rescue from elevated, sometimes vertical, locations brings about thoughts of heroism mixed with brawn and self-sacrifice. Images are conjured of cliff rescues where the technical effort is hanging from a few seemingly small nylon ropes hundreds of feet above the ground. Such is the vertical realm of technical rope rescue. This is a technical field in which the author serves professionally as battalion chief of (rope) operations for a northern Arizona fire district, and as a private sector instructor to mines in the United States and Canada.

Trends in Test Filtration to Respond to Decreasing Sample Size There has been a steady decline in the quantity of samples available for testwork when developing new mining processes due to the maturing mining technology and the increasing costs of pilot testing. Larox, a supplier of filtration equipment and its co-operation partner Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) have been actively developing new equipment, testing methodologies and tools to plan test campaigns with the objective of being able to determine the optimum filtration technology and the parameters for sizing full scale equipment with a minimum sample size. With smaller sample sizes, the test scale diminishes from pilot scale to bench scale, and the small equipment size has implications for scale-up. Redesigning the equipment to simulate full scale equipment rather than to match filtration theory has led to some interesting developments. Comparisons between bench scale equipment and production units help identify the limitations of bench scale testing. The nature of filtration is such that it is unreliable to estimate filterability theoretically, and different testing methodologies have been investigated to be able to test the feasibility of filtration from samples as small as few grams. While not optimising the filtration technology, these methodologies provide an adequate level of accuracy for scoping studies. Together with improvements in equipment, a software tool has been developed to reduce the number of tests necessary to optimise filtration technology and parameters for sizing.

This paper examines the practical limitations that affect the measurement of stress in rock. As most rock stress measurement is conducted through the invasive process of drilling a hole in a rock mass, the nature of the rock and its response to being drilled form the basis of the stress measurement process. The prime techniques to measure stress down a borehole are to conduct hydraulic fracturing and its variant hydrojacking, overcoring, and the examination of the borehole wall for breakout or tensile fracture. It is also possible in some circumstances to use the sonic velocity within the rock mass as an indicator of the stress situation. Other structural indicators of stress such as joints, faulting and intrusions are useful but may not reflect the current stress situation within the rock mass. The variability of stress within the rock mass also needs to be considered as it is quite unusual to have a monotonic stress situation throughout any rock mass. The outdated concept of measuring the far field stress in a few measurement for use in a numerical model is quite dangerous. It is essential to make multiple measurements and to generate an understanding of its distribution in some form of model before stress can sensibly be incorporated into underground design. The Territory of Afars and Issas is to receive its independence from France on June 27, 1977. The Territory's economic income was based on entrepôt trade through the port of Djibouti and trans-shipment of goods on the Chemin de Fer Franco-Ethiopian (CFE) railroad. The Territorial budget was scheduled to in- crease from $32.6 million3 in 1976 to $36 million in 1977, despite severe shortfalls in 1976 stemming from inflation and a persistent balance-of-trade deficit. Subsidies from France continued to sustain the economy, and the French pledged to provide approximately $140 million in aid annually after independence. In 1976, financial agreements were concluded with a number of Arab oil-producing countries, including Saudi Arabia which granted $10 million toward development projects. The new Republic of Djibouti is scheduled to become the 49th member State of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the 21st member of the Arab League, and to receive aid from their financial institutions. Many factors govern the size and shape of an open pit, and these must be properly understood and used in the short and long-term planning of any open pit and quarrying operation. The importance of each factor will depend on the particular project, but the geology, grade, and localization of mineralization, extent of the deposit, topography, property boundaries, production rates, bench height, pit slopes, road grades, mining costs, and cut-off grades are key elements of open pits. This paper discusses the work done on the above parameters in order to provide an optimal production plan for a limestone quarry and clay deposits that provide raw material for a cement factory in Turkey. Soke cement factory has 1 400 000 tons of clinker capacity and is located on the western part of Turkey, in the province of Aydin. It is one of the largest facilities in the cement sector in terms of capacity, and it has a large advantage over facilities because the location of the factory was chosen to obtain the raw materials necessary for cement production within very short distances. However, the old reserves that supplied limestone to the factory had been reported to have run out, and therefore new limestone reserves in the same province have been investigated over the years by experienced geologists. From surface samples, high MgO content was reported in the neighbourhood of limestone formations with high dolomatization; hence, other alternatives were taken into consideration. One alternative with better chemical composition had been found 24 km away from the factory, but the haulage cost of limestone was unacceptable for the factory due to high diesel prices in Turkey. The maximum allowable MgO content in the pre-mix feed to a rotating furnace is 2.5% MgO content in pre-mix from both limestone and clay deposits. The clay deposits belonging to the cement factory have higher MgO content than the limestone deposit, and therefore this quality problem was taken into consideration first, instead of transporting material from 24 km away. This study gives the details of work done to evaluate both the clay and limestone deposits, statistical analysis performed on core samples taken from drill holes, mathematical modelling for both sites, and most importantly of all, in-pit homogenization work that reduced the pre-mix MgO content. As a result of this study, the profitable limestone quantity has been improved in order to serve the cement factory over a projected 25 additional years without using any material from the close deposit.

High temperature creep resistant alloys are used in power plants as steam pipes and headers where they have to withstand super heated steam temperatures of up to 600ºC for the lifetime of the plant. Frequently certain portions of pipes may be subjected to excessive temperatures and consequently suffer from creep damage. Damaged portions then have to be replaced by welding new steel to the service exposed steel. Such welds will have to be subjected to a post weld heat treatment (PWHT) to relieve residual stress. During such a PWHT it is then possible for the steel to crack in the heat affected zone (HAZ) by what is known as Reheat Cracking (RHC), also known as stress relief cracking. For the present purpose the RHC susceptibility of service exposed steel was compared with that of new steel by reproducing the temperature cycle to which the HAZ will be subjected during welding in a weld simulator. This was followed by PWHT where the influence of residual stress was studied by applying a constant stress to such a weld-simulated specimen in a creep testing machine. A sharp spiral was machined along the length of the cylindrical specimen to simulate the presence of a possible weld defect. In this way it is possible to subject all portions of the simulated HAZ to the same stress intensity. For the purpose of the investigation 1/2Cr-1/2Mo-1/4V steel known to be susceptible to RHC was chosen. During testing a constant tensile stress was maintained while the temperature was increased to follow the thermal cycle prescribed for PWHT. It was found that the new steel in all instances failed by RHC along the grain boundaries in the high temperature heat affected zone. In the case of the service exposed steel the creep strength of parent metal was lower than that of new steel as a result of exposure to a steam temperature of 540°C for about 15 years. Consequently, all of the failures during testing occurred in a ductile manner by necking outside the HAZ rather than by RHC. When service exposed steel is welded to new material, it is expected that the creep strain associated with stress relaxation will mostly be concentrated in the parent steel outside the HAZ. Accordingly, it should probably not be necessary to make any extra allowance for reheat cracking during repair of steam pipes manufactured from 1/2Cr-1/2Mo-1/4V steel other than that applicable for welding new steel.

In a laboratory study under acidic oxidising conditions, the thiocyanate system gave results at least as good as cyanide and considerably better than thiourea, with modest consumption of SCN (less than 1 kg/t ore). For both cyanide and thiocyanate lixiviants a residence time of about 24 h was required for maximum gold extraction, which was generally in the range of 92-96%. The adsorption of gold from thiocyanate leach liquors was found to be rapid, but activated carbon catalyses the autoreduction of ferric iron to ferrous iron in thiocyanate solutions, suggesting that ion exchange may be a better recovery route

Until recently, the fire protection systems used to protect mining equipment were based on generically designed, off the- shelf concepts. These systems were reliant on single agent approaches and were generally comprised of a series of small twenty or thirty pound chemical canisters that would discharge their contents when triggered by thermal detection means. As the equipment grew in capacity, the logic used to increase the protection was to add more chemical canisters to the system. Hydraulic excavators and large-scale mining trucks grew dramatically in size into the 1990?s and beyond; with this growth came the increase in major losses due to fire. This was evidenced throughout this period, and continues to be of great concern today. During this presentation you will learn of the significant changes that have come about as a result of this history. Today, dual-agent products, infrared detection and unit-specific, engineered systems are the primary phrases used when discussing how to best protect this equipment from fire loss. This session is a must for anybody looking to optimally protect their equipment assets and for those looking to renew and/or secure new insurance for high value equipment in the future.
