Sulfur concretes have been developed by the Bureau of Mines as construction materials with physical and mechanical properties that suit them for use in acid and salt corrosive environments where conventional concretes fail. Mixture design methods were established for preparing sulfur concretes using different types of aggregates and recently developed mixed-modified sulfur cements Bench-scale testing of the sulfur concretes has shown their potential value. Corrosion resistance, strength, and durability of sulfur concrete are superior to those of conventional materials. Field in situ evaluation tests of the sulfur concretes as replacement for conventional concrete materials are in progress in corrosive areas of 24 commercial chemical, fertilizer, and metallurgical plants.

This paper presents the results from the investigation of the application of thermal fragmentation in Australian hard rock underground narrow-vein mining. Two geologically similar samples from an underground narrow-vein hard rock gold mine were collected to obtain a measure of the technology’s ability to recover ore by the creation of large thermal openings to assess the applicability of the thermal method. Particle size distribution showed a higher generation of fine product, − 2 mm, by thermal fragmentation compared with selective blasting by 31%. The Bond work index for thermal ore (12.62 kWh/t) is half to that of the blasted ore value (25.32 kWh/t). The average grindability obtained for the thermal ore sample was greater than the blasted sample by a factor of 2.44, a higher value indicating a decrease in the energy required to grind. The thermal fragmentation method generates product with higher dissolution of gold in cyanide, by 14% for the − 9.5 + 2 mm size fraction samples. Additionally, the thermal fragmentation results in higher production of − 9.5 + 2 mm material by 15 % compared with selective blasting.

"The experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of various process parameters in rotary degassing of aluminum alloy AS5U3G. Degassing was carried out by use of argon inert gas. The flow rate of the gas was investigated in the range of 12 to 21 L/min., 350 to 500 rpm rotor speed, 6 to 12 minutes degassing time, and 755°C to 780°C melt temperature. Degassing efficiency was evaluated through measuring the density of RPT samples. By optimizing the process parameters, RPT sample density was increased up to 2.73 g/cm3, which guaranties the production of high-quality aluminum castings. Tensile strength and elongation were increased considerably by degassing process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows small size and well-distributed microporosity. IntroductionOne of the major problems associated with the casting of aluminum alloys is the formation of gas porosity. Aluminum and its alloys are very susceptible to hydrogen absorption. Because solubility is much lower in solid state than liquid state, hydrogen atoms leave their position during solidification and combine together to form hydrogen molecules. These micrometer- scale cavities, called microporosity, cause the reduction of mechanical properties, particularly strength, ductility, fracture toughness, fatigue resistance, pressure tightness, and corrosion resistance (Laslaz, 1991; Jorstad and Rasmussen, 1993; Sigworth and Wang, 1994; Korasani, 1996; Anson and Gruzleski, 1999; Zhang et al., 2000). To avoid these problems and produce good quality castings, it is necessary to remove hydrogen from the melt. Several methods are available for degassing aluminum melt. One of them is a rotary degassing system using inert gas, e.g. Ar or N2. Various thermodynamic and kinetic factors govern the removal of hydrogen from molten aluminum (Anderson, 1987; Sigworth, 1987; Pignault, 1993; King and Reynolds, 1995). These are some parameters that affect degassing efficiency. Some of them are discussed here and some are examined in this project."

From modest beginnings in 1996, research into the mineral potential of New ZealandÆs Exclusive Economic Zone has progressed into a major multidisciplinary component of GNSÆs recently funded 6-year æMineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZÆ Programme. In excess of $7.5 M of research funding has been expended, plus $10 M leveraged via collaborations with NIWA (NZ), NOAA (USA), JAMSTEC (Japan), U. Kiel (Germany) and ANU (Australia), whose scientists have contributed hugely to research cruises, as well as subsequent analysis and publication. The 1999 NZAPLUME I cruise was the first research expedition to systematically locate, and chemically characterise, submarine hydrothermal venting associated with arc volcanoes of the southern part the Kermadec intra oceanic arc system. This was followed by the 2002 NZAPLUME II and 2004 NZAPLUME III cruises to the mid- and northern-sections of the Kermadec arc, respectively. Combined, these cruises have surveyed 1300 km of the volcanic chain (from Whakatane to Monowai), including 34 major volcanic centres. Together with concurrent surveys in the Tonga arc, this is now the longest continuous stretch of intra oceanic arc to be surveyed for hydrothermal emissions. Most of the volcanic centres are characterised by simple cones although 30 per cent contain caldera complexes, and compositions range from basalt through to rhyolite. Massive sulphide mineralisation has been recovered from several volcanic centres in the southern Kermadecs (Clark, Rumble II West and Brothers), suggesting the existence of significant Au and base metal bearing deposits along the arc front.

This paper describes the results of a detailed analysis of a loess deposit at the deep foundations test site established by the Kansas Department of Transportation. Multiple CPT, SPT, and pressuremeter tests were conducted as part of the investigation. This paper includes an evaluation of the effectiveness of common correlations used with the CPT, SPT when used for classification of loess and estimating its properties. Results show that common correlations must be used with caution as significant errors in estimation may result from using methods developed for other soil types. Laboratory testing included direct shear, triaxial, collapse, and consolidation testing, with many of the tests conducted on both vertically and horizontally oriented samples to evaluate anisotropic behavior. The results showed that strength properties could be considered to be isotropic.

In order to reach a large, untapped reserve of high-quality coal, D8 Cloverlick mine proposed to mine a corridor nearly 2,000 ft deep beneath the Benham Spur of Black Mountain, Kentucky’s highest peak. D8 Cloverlick mine was extracting the Owl seam, but the corridor’s route lay approximately 70 ft above century-old mine workings in the C–(Darby) seam. Adding to the concern, three serious coal bursts had recently occurred in nearby Owl seam workings.

The Bureau of Mines studied available information on the nature and occurrence of potential sources of aluminum in the United States, its Pacific island possessions, and Puerto Rico to obtain data for use in evaluating the production capability and costs of extracting the aluminum from such materials. The quantity, type, and grade of the materials range from 4 billion tons of bauxite, bauxitic clay, and kaolin averaging 33 to 42 percent Al2O3 to nearly 600 billion tons of anorthosite containing only 27 percent Al2O3. Principal deposits of bauxite, bauxitic clay, and kaolin occur in Arkansas, Georgia, Hawaii, and Oregon. Major anorthosite deposits are located in New York, Wyoming, California, Idaho, and Montana. About 11 billion tons of material in deposits of various types of clay, the kyanite group of minerals, laterites, and shales averaging 27 to 30 percent Al2O3 comprise additional resource's from which aluminum some day may be extracted. Material meeting specifications of the study was found in only 22 States and the Pacific island possessions. Utilization of these large low-grade sources of aluminum awaits development of processes that are economically competitive with the Bayer process for extracting alumina from baxuite, which is at present the only commercial ore of aluminum. Changes in economic and political conditions also may play important roles in the eventual development of the potential sources of aluminum.

Continuous operating performance and high profit is one of the major concerns in the mining industry. Information systems are expected to reinforce and enable conformance to these requirements. The companion efforts of business management and production information systems press for tighter integration to avoid over-laps, multiple instances of similar data, and expensive maintenance of databases. Implementation of advanced intelligent systems throughout a mine operation can reduce costs, optimize investment and create a shorter payback via conversion of the data accumulated by field and process devices into information, and subsequently, into decisions. However, in order to harness the potential power inherent in these intelligent devices, adequate and flexible modular knowledge-based solutions are required. Fortunately, there has been at least one such practical response to this challenge, namely the ABB IndustrialIT portfolio. With these tools in place, production efficiency is reached via integration of process, production, and quality information. Moreover, they permit immediate detection and remedial action to changes to process and boundary condition variables. Finally, using advanced optimization techniques supported by dedicated mathematical models, they allow for economic process optimization (process set points and coordination thereof, energy management, production planning, energy supply contract optimization, etc) of the plant as a whole.

Of the total quantity of secondary copper and zinc that became obsolete in the United States from 19b1 through 1970, more than 11 million tons of copper and 10 million tons of zinc were not recovered. These estimates are based on a study of the flow and recovery of old copper and zinc scrap by consumption end-use. This report describes (1) where copper and zinc are being used; (2) when they become obsolete and available as secondary metal; (3) how they are being collected for recycling; and (4) how much might be recovered from scrap that presently is not being recycled.

Clean energy production from coal, oil, and gas, and the development of these and other energy sources continued to be a major objective of the energy research program of the Bureau of Mines.3 In 1971 increased emphasis was placed on the production of fluid fuels and chemicals from coal. Advances were achieved in the development of the Synthane and Hydrane gasification processes for producing pipeline gas from coal (page 31), and progress was made in research on solid wastes utilization (page 2), and on liquid fuels production from coal (page 37); Coal mine safety, solid waste disposal and utilization, coal preparation and transport, and fundamental research on coal and related products also continued to be the subject of extensive research. Improved methods for extracting petroleum and natural gas without surface and subsurface pollution featured research on these vital fuel and energy sources. This research was highlighted by studies of the fracturing systems of reservoir rocks, including subsurface fracture mapping and new fracturing techniques to achieve optimum production of oil and gas (page 52). Of equal importance were projects on oil recovery by water or gas flooding (page 52), by steam injection (page 57), on the identification of oil spills (page 63), and on means to reduce vehicular exhaust emissions (page 66).

The efficiency of an ore-processing unit depends on the consistency of the characteristics of raw material entering the plant. When the mined ore is highly variable in quality, the only way to ensure consistency is to homogenize the ore prior to feeding to the processing plant. The homogenization can generally be achieved by the bed blending operation. Given that the stockpiling and reclamation processes are very expensive, it is necessary to design the process in such a way as to minimize variabilities of specified properties of raw material. In this paper, for alternative stacking types, optimal stockpile geometry is found in three stages: First, stockpile input is simulated by sequential Gaussian simulation, and then the variance reduction ratios (VRR) as a criterion of stockpile efficiency are calculated for various stockpile geometry scenarios by a stockpile simulator written in FORTRAN. Second, multiple regression analysis is performed to model the VRR by the use of stockpile length, the number of layers and stacker speed as the independent variables. Finally, the model is an optimization problem. Decision variables are the stockpile length, the number of layers, stacker speed and stacking type. The genetic algorithms (GA) are used to minimize the VRR. The approach was demonstrated on data from an iron orebody. The problem was to reduce fluctuations of iron, silica, alumina and lime contents in the stockpile output. The results showed that the approach could be used for the bed blending design efficiently. Several factors contributing to the loss of fibre during treatment are a function of the paragenesis of the veins. The occurrence, of magnetite from the cap rock within the veins prevents complete fiberization. There is a marked similarity between these veins and those in the Koegas-Westerberg area of South Africa.INTRODUCTIONAn investigation of the mineralogy of the Wittenoom Gorge crocidolite veins was undertaken in the latter part of 1962 at the request of the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. Ltd. It was anticipated that such a study might reveal the cause or causes of the lack of recovery of some asbestos during beneficiation. Some interesting features of the mineralogy and paragenesis of the crocidolite veins become apparent, but it is emphasized that the investigation is far from complete, as the study did not extend to the field occurrence.The samples examined were selected from the mill and from the untreated ore.GEOLOGICAL SETTINGWittenoom Gorge is situated on the Fortescue River in the Hammersley Ranges of Western Australia and is one of several gorges in these ranges, on the sides of which 'crocidoIite asbestos is known to occur. The Hammersley, Ranges consist essentially of a series of quartzites, shales, ferruginous quartzites and dolomites. These' rocks are part of the Nullagine Formation (Proterozoic) and are usually either horizontal or gently folded. Previous studies and research efforts have shown that noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a problem in the U.S. mining industry. In response, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have been conducting a cross-sectional survey of equip­ment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry to estimate the potential for NIHL within the mining community. One commodity recently surveyed was the extraction of sand and gravel from surface pits and by dredging. To address the potential for NIHL in the sand and gravel industry, sound levels on and around the dredges and processing equipment were recorded to iden­tify areas of high noise levels. Full-shift worker dosimetry, in conjunction with task observations, was documented to determine the relationship between exposure and source. This paper presents research examining noise on dredges used in several surface mine sand and gravel operations and in the processing facilities. Results indicate that there are areas on the dredges (crane, suction pumps and diesel engines) where sound levels greater than 90 dB(A) are pres­ent. In addition, crushers and screens used in the processing of the sand and gravel also generate sound levels greater than 90 dB(A). Although no surveyed worker exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA’s) permissible exposure level (PEL) of 90 dB(A) eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA8), laborers, mechanics, oilers, helpers, pickers and greasers are the workers most likely to be exposed to hazardous sound levels and to thus develop NIHL over time

This research was part of an effort to investigate means of reestablishing non¬polluted hydrological systems in areas where surface mining directly impacts shallow ground-water resources. Chemically undesirable overburden material was selectively backfilled with the intent that it would be below the future root zone, be above the reestablished aquifer, and would not be leached as a result of deep percolation. After 2 years the buried material remains above the spoil aquifer and below the maximum rooting depth. Unsaturated water flow from the land surface to the buried material occurred during wet climatological periods. No significant leaching of buried material was observed, however. Overburden sample contamination from drill stem joint grease with Pb, Zn, and Cu additives caused substantial error regarding DTPA extractable trace metals. A grease with teflon and talc additives was recommended for use in future sampling programs. DTPA extractable trace elements in overburden material had no statistical relationship to post-mine ground-water quality. Overburden columns leached with water produced leachates comparable to overburden and spoil ground-water trace metal quality. A depositional model described the Rosebud Coal overburden as a fluvial system with distinct units of sand, silt, and clay, with distinct chemical properties. Physical and chemical characteristics of the model were comparable to the in situ geochemical system, a relationship which may aid in locating overburden materials unsuitable for reclamation.

The paper describes the design process, trial testing and contract pile installation of 772 pre­cast concrete piles at a site in Surrey, South East England. Recommendations on how to improve the design, construction trials and main contract piling phases of the project are made. The building layout is shown in Figure 1 and is comprised of a central circulation area with five office wings radiating out from its southern side (only three of these wings were constructed in Phase 1 of the project). Approximately 60% of the circulation area and one office wing were built with a single level basement. The basement was constructed "bottom-up" in open cut with the void between the basement walls and the cut slope being back-filled with compacted site won soil above a perimeter drainage system at basement slab level. The building has up to 3 stories above basement level and is a reinforced concrete structure. The client for the project is Pfizer Ltd. Pfizer Ltd was represented on site by Laing Project Management (Laing). The consulting engineer was Ove Arup and Partners (Arup) while the piling contractor was Roger Bullivant Ltd (RBL).

The axial capacity of step tapered bored piles in sand was examined by field tests at one site in Kuwait. Two straight piles, and two step tapered piles were load tested in compression to failure. All four piles were 3 m deep. The straight piles were 0.2 m in diameter. The step tapered piles had a diameter of 0.3 m for the upper segment which extended up to 40% of the pile length changing to 0.2 m diameter for the lower section. The soil profile consists of medium to dense sand with minor cementation and no groundwater was encountered. Both the ultimate bearing capacity and the settlement at working loads were examined. The axial capacity of the step tapered piles was greater, and the settlement at working loads was less, compared with the straight shaft piles. The increase in capacity is mainly attributed to the added side friction along the larger diameter top segment of the shaft.

The purpose of the work described in this publication was to determine, on a pilot-plant scale, the practicability of concentrating low-grade bauxite deposits to render them suitable for the extraction of alumina. In 1941, when it became apparent that the United States might soon be drawn into war, the government, through its various agencies and bureaus, began to stimulate and increase production from domestic reserves of bauxite, which is the principal raw material for the production of aluminum. This activity, which was centered in Arkansas, where 95 percent of the domestic reserve is situated, reached peak production when enemy submarine warfare greatly hindered imports from foreign sources. During this period the average domestic production in Arkansas rose from approximately 300,000 long wet tons to something over 6,000,000 tons in 1943.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated corrosion resistance of Split Set friction rock stabilizer mine roof bolts to aid in better prediction of useful service life. Electrochemical corrosion testing was conducted utilizing an automated corrosion measurement system. Natural and/or synthetic mine waters from four uranium and two copper mines were the test media for the two types of high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) steels from which Split Set stabilizers are manufactured, and for galvanized steel. Tests were conducted with waters of minimum and maximum dissolved oxygen content at in-mine water temperatures. Retrieved Split Set stabilizers were also evaluated for property changes. Galvanized steel was found to be far superior to the unprotected steel in general corrosion resistance; limited tests indicate little ten.dency to pitting, contrary to behavior for the uncoated steel. Copper-bearing HSLA steel was slightly more corrosion resistant than non-copper-bearing HSLA steel. Statistical analyses resulted in development of equations relating dissolved oxygen, chloride, sulfate, and magnesium contents of mine waters to corrosion rates of the two HSLA steels (nongalvanized). An equation was developed that relates corrosion rates of galvanized steel to mine water temperature and dissolved oxygen content. Variable conditions in mine environments make corrosion damage difficult to predict and emphasize the need for corrosion prevention and control.
