THE INVESTIGATION of barrier pillars in the Western Middle field is part of the comprehensive study of the mine-water problem in the anthra¬cite region of Pennsylvania by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8,9,10,11,1,2,15,16).8 The Western Middle field is in Schuylkill, Columbia, and Northumberland Counties in eastern Pennsylvania. It has an area of 120 square miles, is 42 miles long from Delano on the east to Trevorton on the west, and is 2 to 5 miles wide. In the Western Middle field are 58 underground water pools containing 38 billion gallons of water (5). Some of the pools overflow to the surface, and the water from others seeps into adjacent mines through permeable barrier pillars separating them from abandoned mines. Several active mines are interconnected to workings in abandoned mines, which are partly filled with water. These mines are separated by barrier pillars that are considered effective only below the altitude of the connections. In some abandoned mines, pumping stations maintain the water at altitudes where the hydrostatic pressure against the barrier pillars is not excessive and does not endanger adjacent active mines. If water in these abandoned mines is allowed to rise to where it can overflow into the active mines, it must be pumped from the active mines at lower altitudes; this materially increases the cost of pumping. It is estimated that from 1944 to 1948 approximately 30 percent of the water pumped to the surface was from abandoned mines.

The resource industry must prepare for the inevitable shift towards automation as an operational objective. Although this may seem like a distant concern, many mining companies and equipment manufacturers are already conducting full-scale automation trials. The necessary technology is advancing at a rapid pace yet the training of people to support it at the trade level lags far behind. Those given the responsibility of installing and maintaining automated equipment in the mining environment require a unique set of skills and knowledge. These training needs demand attention to ensure that the wider uptake of automation is sustainable and achieves its full potential.   This paper documents work undertaken by CRCMining and the Mining Industry Skills Centre towards establishing a training framework seeking to address the needs of trade level personnel tasked with the support of automation equipment. A comprehensive definition of the skills and knowledge required by the hypothetical automation-specialised tradesperson is presented. The training pathway identified for these personnel is also described. This work forms part of the Mining Industry Skills Centre's Automation Skills Formation Strategy, funded by the Queensland Department of Education and Training.

The benefits of water harvesting as an alternative to conventional reclamation were demonstrated on the Peabody Coal mines in Northeast Arizona. The project produced food crops for four years, and demonstrated that a catchment/crop area ratio of about 2.5:1 was sufficient to obtain sufficient water from the 11 inch annual precipitation to produce garden and fruit varieties in quantities equal to or exceeding national production averages. The economic returns exceeded those of the conventional practice of returning the mine area to rangeland by at least ten fold. Subsidence of the regraded spoil was the only major problem in maintaining the system. Although, water harvesting systems have the potential of providing high economic returns and greater social benefits, as demonstrated by this project they are presently at variance with the strip mining regulation.

The purpose of this paper is to present the problems encountered in the development of an efficient mine organization and to show the means used by certain mining companies in promoting efficiency. There is also a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the various systems of paying and handling labor and a description of their application at the individual mines.

The following tables summarize data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in these tables is what is termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines. Because of inadequacies in the statistics available, some series deviate from the foregoing definition. For copper, gold, lead, silver, tin, and zinc, the quantities are recorded on a mine basis (as the recoverable content of ore sold or treated). However, the values assigned to these quantities are based on the average selling price of refined metal, not the mine value. Mercury is measured as recovered metal and valued at the average New York price for the metal. The values shown are in current dollars, with no adjustments made to compensate for changes in the purchasing power of the dollar.

The Project alignment initiates north of Pinerolo, along the State Road 23[S.S. 23] that is one of the principal arteries to the northwestern Alps where a number of Olympic events for the 2006 Winter Games will be held. The 3.5 km ring road bypasses the Porte habitat by traversing twice the Chisone River. It consists of the following principal structures [Figure 1]: San Martino bridge [130 m in four bays] Prarostino viaduct [130 m in four bays] Craviale tunnel [1055 m] Turinella bridge [a 50 m long bridge that connects the two tunnels] Turina tunnel [665 m] Malanaggio viaduct [350 m in 9 bays]. The road section is 13 m wide and is made up of two 3.75 m lanes, a hard shoulder [1.50 m wide] and a 1.25 m wide curb for each lane. The Project maximum velocity is 100 km/h.

We encountered several areas of methodologic uncertainty during development of a data collection method for use with vibrating hand tools in metal assembly. A local manufacturer sought our assistance designing a data collection method for evaluating and predicting risks of upper extremity disorders associated with use of vibrating hand tools. Current methods of vibration measurement are described in ISO 5349 [2]. However, the complexity of measuring vibration along with other exposures such as force and posture has limited the number of workplace-based studies of upper extremity disorders that have included direct measurements of vibration. Data from this preliminary study was used to look at two issues: a comparison of vibration values between production and non-production workers when performing the same task, and a comparison of worker ratings of vibration comfort to direct measurement of tool vibration. Methods Eight experienced production workers used each of six metal fastening tools to install fasteners. Vibration was collected by 3 tri-axial accelerometers, one attached to the tool handle following ISO 5349 recommended locations, one attached to the hand dorsum on the 3rd knuckle and one to the thumb side of the wrist. Data sampling rate was 10,000 samples/second. Hand grip and feed forces were obtained using a Novel pressure sensing mat on the palm. Each trial consisted of installing 10 fasteners per tool for each of the 6 tools. The test set-up placed the wrist in the position typically used by the operator during production. Each worker documented subjective comfort and effort ratings on a seven point scale following each series of fastener installations. One series of testing was completed by three non-production workers inexperienced in fastener installation to simulate use of alternative employees for data gathering. Vibration data for each trial were acquired, digitized, and stored using Lab View. The X, Y, & Z axes were used to calculate the vector sum response for each tri-axial accelerometer. The tool data were digitally filtered following ISO recommendations. Calculated data consisted of the mean RMS over the tool’s on- time, the starting and breaking peak impulses, and the peak of the frequency response. Results Production workers (n=8) were right hand dominant males with a mean age of 55 years and normal hand strength (mean right grip = 106 lbs). Non-production workers (n=3) had similar characteristics. We found large and statistically meaningful differences in hand force during tool use between production and non-production workers (mean production workers = 9.77 lbs, mean non-production workers = 43.30 lbs, p = 0.0001). Vibration values obtained from the hand also showed a statistically meaningful difference (mean in production workers = 0.67 Gs, mean in non-production workers = 1.48Gs, p = 0.0014, figure 1). Experienced worker ratings of comfort during tool use demonstrated a moderate correlation with measured vibration (r=0.63). Worker ratings trended with direct recordings from the tool handle as shown in figure 2.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is using laboratory and computer-based techniques to investigate the post- failure behavior of yielding pillars and pillar reinforcement techniques to control entry deformation. Poorly dimensioned yield pillars, can cause adverse ground conditions. Laboratory studies to evaluate various reinforcement techniques for controlling yield pillar deformation were conducted. A cracking and crushing model is used to evaluate potential tensile and compressive failure planes within pillars of various widths to assess the degree of yielding and stress redistribution. The use of an elasto-plastic model to evaluate the effect of various reinforcement on yield pillars is also discussed. These procedures effectively account for the residual pillar strength, important in yield pillar design.

This paper presents the results of a research study that is being conducted by the Mine Effluents Program, Mining and Mineral Science Laboratory (MMSL), Natural Resources Canada aimed at evaluating biotechnology processes for the treatment of nitrogen compounds such as thiocyanide (CNS) and ammonia (NH4-N) which are present in gold mill effluents. A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) technology, commonly used for the biological treatment of municipal and industrial effluents, was used in this study. In the SBR process, the micro-organisms were able to degrade CNS to NH4-N and NH4-N to nitrate (NO3-N) at operating conditions of two 12 h treatment cycles per day, with pH maintained in the 7.4 to 7.6 range, and at room temperature (approximately 21°C) and also at 12 °C. The end products of CNS and NH4-N biological oxidation were NO3-N and sulphate (SO4) that are relatively non-toxic. Partial removal of NO3-N was achieved by biological denitrification reactions in the SBR process. The SBR process effluent was measured to be non-toxic to rainbow trout based on the 96 h acute toxicity test. The microbial consortium isolated from the SBR treating a simulated effluent was able to effectively oxidize CNS and NH4-N to NO3-N in water samples (under batch conditions) collected at three mine sites located in Quebec, the Northwest Territories, and Yukon.

The chemistry of cyanide solutions is complex, this complexity being responsible for the ability to act as complex-forming agents in metal dissolution processes, among them gold and silver. Such ionic species are used in hydrometallurgical processes, in particular in gold extraction and electro-plating. Due to the high toxicity of cyanide, the discard of effluent from processes and/or industries demands rigorous treatment so as to minimise its concentration. Among the conventional chemical treatment of such effluents one can mention SO2/air; biological degradation; oxidation by using hydrogen peroxide; oxidation by sodium hypochlorite, etc. However, the electrolytic recycling process is also promising for cyanide recovery and offers the possibility of recycling it to the aforementioned industrial processes. Such a process does not use additional chemicals but enables direct re-utilisation to the main process aiming at adjusting the cyanide concentration.

Oregon Resources Corporation (ORC), an industrial minerals mining company, is currently engaged in the development of a new process design that will allow the unique paleo-beach placer deposits of southwestern Oregon to be mined efficiently and economically, creating an additional domestic source for chromite, garnet, and zircon. Engineering design has been guided by the variable geology and mineralogy of the paleo-beach placer deposits as well as the need for a dry tailing scheme that resolves a lack of water resources at the placer locations and at the same time eliminates the need for slurry settling ponds, typical of paleo-beach placer operations in North America. Metallurgical study of the placer material was grouped into four distinct samples based on marine terrace deposition, geological facies, and mineralogy. Because the metallurgical samples represented the extremes likely to be encountered in all future Oregon paleo-beach placer ores, the process design is highly dynamic and will successfully adjust to meet the production needs. Water availability at the mining area is seasonal and will not support a typical placer operation?s water requirement needs for heavy mineral concentration. For this reason, ORC has developed a plan to construct the ore processing facilities near Coos Bay, where a municipal source of water is available. Raw ore will be transported from the mining sites approximately twenty miles one way to the processing facility with return loads hauling tailings back to the active pit. The need to haul dry tailings, return dry material to the pit for reclamation, and limit the amount of water being purchased from the municipality has driven the design of a unique water reclamation system. BACKGROUND Location and Access Economic concentrations of ?black sand? or heavy mineral (minerals with specific gravity greater than 2.85) have been recognized and studied in marine placers from Coos Bay to the mouth of the Rogue River, a distance of approximately 75 miles along the southern Oregon coast (Hornor, 1918; Griggs, 1945)(Figure 1). ORC will begin mining existing reserves approximately 20 miles south of Coos Bay in a region known locally as Seven Devils. Ore will be trucked north to the processing site near Coos Bay via use of existing county and state roads, including U.S. 101. The available facilities at the processing site include highway, rail, municipal water and electricity, natural gas, and a deep water port. At the time of this writing, the rail line had been abandoned, but was being pursued by the International Port of Coos Bay. It is anticipated that this will be serviceable at some time in the future. History The southern Oregon marine placers have garnered the interests of miners since 1852, when present day beaches were exploited for gold. The beach deposits were small and irregular in nature and were easily washed away by the major storms the coast endures during the winter months (Hornor, 1918). [ ] In the 1920?s, deposits at the beach were followed upstream to their paleo-beach terrace origins (Pardee, 1934). These terrace placers were mined, but with little success, as the cost of mining and processing was greater than at the present day beach deposits. The greatest effort to understand and delineate the paleo-beach terrace placers came during World War II. As the need for a domestic source of steel hardening chromite was evident, the heavy mineral bearing placers of southwestern Oregon provided just that. The U.S. Geological Survey, under guidance from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, began exploration drilling of the paleo-beach terraces in 1940 (Griggs, 1945). This work was part of the investigation of strategic mineral deposits and would ultimately supply much needed chromite for the war efforts. "ABSTRACTThe design of drilled shafts often incorporates large factors of safety, for which settlements under service loads are highly influenced by the initial elastic stiffness. In the case of groups of drilled shafts with typical spacing, the elastic shaft-soil-shaft interaction dominates the behavior even for loads close to the bearing capacity, for which the initial stiffness is a key parameter in the design. This paper describes typical trends in results obtained by means of different approaches currently available in the literature for the evaluation of the initial stiffness of a single shaft. An experimental technique that provides a rapid and inexpensive means for the evaluation of the initial stiffness is described, and the results obtained for typical cases are compared with analytical predictions.IntroductionThe behavior of drilled shafts under axial loads is generally governed by the initial stiffness, as the factors of safety considered in design are often large, due to a superposition of conservative assumptions on soil properties and expected loads. In the case of shaft groups, the initial elastic stiffness plays a major role together with the elastic group effects, as nonlinearities tend to localize around the shafts and have a lesser effect than elastic deformations on adjacent elements (e.g., Leung et al., 2010). An accurate characterization of the initial stiffness is thus warranted for the analysis of drilled shafts and shaft groups under service loads.Initial stiffness of shafts may be estimated on the basis of soil stiffness and structural properties of the element by means of numerical methods (e.g., Pinto and Prato, 2006), as well as analytical methods (e.g., Randolph and Wroth, 1978). The soil stiffness may be determined by means of geophysical tests (e.g., Spectral Analysis of Surface Waves, SASW, Stokoe et al., 1994), or correlations with Standar Penetration Test (SPT) blowcounts or Cone Penetration Test (CPT) resistances (e.g., Sabatini et al., 2002).The initial stiffness may also be measured on drilled shafts by means of load tests. Static load tests (SLT), however, have some limitations on measuring small deflections, for which the initial stiffness is often extrapolated by means of large strain measurements (e.g., Chin, 1970), where the SLT measurements are more accurate."

Markets as used 1n this report are divided into two components for individual analysis--(1) supplier markets which include regional Frasch and byproduct sulfur producers and (2) consumer markets which include processors and manufacturers requiring sulfur in their operations. The term sulfur as used in this report includes brimstone, native sulfur, elemental sulfur, or sulfur equivalents.

Historical mining operations in Colorado and other western states have resulted in thousands of remnant mine openings. Many are sources of metals loading and acid water generation in surface and ground waters. It is estimated that more than 965 km (600 miles) of streams in Colorado have been impacted by past mining activities. The Animas River watershed in southwestern Colorado is one of the most heavily affected areas in the state. Abandoned mine features pose significant safety hazards to those who enter them. These hazards can include bad air, unstable rock or falls into open shafts, stopes and winzes. Backcountry skiers and snowmobile enthusiasts are particularly vulnerable to falls into snow covered mine openings.

In 2005, a total of 739 nonmetal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). These mines (e.g., potash, gypsum, salt) comprised 5.0% of all operations. ? Mines producing common clay comprised 26.9% (n=199) of all nonmetal mining operations. ? Nonmetal mining operations were located in all states and territories except Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

The principle activities of the Explosives Research Laboratory from July 1, 1961 to June 30, 1962, are described briefly in part 1. Part 2 gives short abstracts of publications that appeared during fiscal year 1962; in general, the research reported in these publications antedates the report period. Part 3 gives the results of an investigation which, although too limited to warrant separate publication, merits presentation in some detail because of current interest in ammonium nitrate-fuel oil compositions.

The method for determining the effective porosity of oil- and gas-bearing sands described in this report is a development of earlier methods (28)3/ devised by the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus bas been improved and made more convenient to use, but the procedure is essentially the same as that which has been in use for maw years. A tabulation at the end of the report gives the results of more than 4,800 porosity determinations for oil sands4/ in the fields of 13 States, A selected bibliography of references to articles containing descriptions and evaluations of various methods of' determining porosity is included in this report. The method was devised and developed at the Petroleum Experiment Station at Bartlesville, Okla., as part of the Bureau's research on fluid-energy relationships and on methods of improving the recovery of crude oil from underground reservoirs.

Mine safety and quality of life of miner working in underground mines depend to a large extent on mine illumination and communication. The provisioning of reliable, safe, and cost-effective illumination is critical, particularly in underground gassy coal mines. To prevent firedamp explosion by electrical switching operation in coal mining industry requires implementing intrinsically safe illumination circuit. The luminaire design also needs to be certified and installed properly. The current illumination systems installed inside mines require a lot of energy which is obtained from nonrenewable resources. In this work, the design and implementation of solar-powered optical fiber-based illumination are studied and implemented in the Jhanjra underground coal mine, Eastern Coalfield Limited, and a Li-Fi-based communication system for underground coal mines is proposed. Silicate optical fibers of various core diameters and numerical apertures are characterized for illumination applications and their efficiencies are reported. The possibility of achieving optical fiber-based solar, laser, and hybrid illuminations in underground mines is discussed. The design and fabrication of a Fresnel lens-based solar tracker for solar illumination are also presented. The optical fiber-based illumination system is installed in an underground coal mine and the illumination of over 70 lux is achieved at the work plane. Finally, optical fiber-based illumination and simultaneous basic Li-Fi communication are demonstrated and will be beneficial to the underground coal mining industry.

"The process-measurements of copper smelters in Japan were investigated for the summary of the latest technique and for the fundamental study of process control. The smelters investigated are those employing flash smelting furnace and P.S. converter, one reverberatory furnace and P.S. converter, and one continuous smelting converting furnace (M.I. process). Respective process is then considered, consisted of several reactors of different functions. The measurement methods were summarized in each reactor, including the measurement points. The methods of chemical analyses of the samples in each reactor were also investigated.IntroductionAn investigation on the process measurements, chemical analyses, and system control in copper smelters in Japan were carried out for understanding and summarizing the technique of the pyrometallurgical copper smelting operations. The typical seven processes in six copper smelters were investigated in the period from 1985 to 1987. The smelters investigated were Touyo Smelter of Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd., Kosaka Smelter of Dowa Mining Co., Ltd., Saganoseki Smelter of Nippon Mining Co., Ltd., Tamano Smelter of Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co., Ltd., Ashio Smelter of Furukawa Co., Ltd. and Naoshima Smelter of Mitsubishi Metal Co., Ltd. They include five flash smelting furnace and P.S. converter systems, one Mitsubishi continuous smelting and converting process (M.I. process), and one reverberatory furnace and P.S. converter system.The investigation was performed by making inquiries about the measurements, chemical analyses, system control, and their future prospects to the engineers in each smelter and by summarizing up in each item. The system control and future prospects were summarized in another paper titled ""Process Control Scheme of Copper Smelting Processes in Japan and Future View."

The program was carried out to develop deep kerfing and core breaking techniques to be incorporated into the design of a field prototype hard rock mining machine. The field machine is designed to mine non-abrasive bedded deposits up to 20,000 psi in uniaxial compressive strength. The mining technique involves cutting approximately 2 ft deep parallel kerfs spaced 2 ft apart in either a horizontal or vertical direction and subsequently breaking out the cores so defined. The prototype machine is intended for demonstration of the technique in a quarry or equivalent field environment. The program was aimed at minimizing the required kerf width, obtaining reliable breaking within that kerf width and determining cutter blade requirements necessary to achieve a mining rate of 20 ft3/min. Full scale breaking experiments and 1/2 scale kerfing experiments were employed to evaluate the system. High strength concrete test specimens were used to simulate the rock being cut and broken. The test results indicate the kerf/break technique can achieve the desired mining rate by utilizing two 7 ft diam blades to cut 2 in. wide by 24 in. deep kerfs. A lateral load applied at the base of the kerf (base shear) was selected at the core breaking technique to be employed by the full-scale prototype machine.
