On December 12, 2018 at 4:14 AM EST, an earthquake registering a 4.4 magnitude on the Richter Scale occurred in central Tennessee. According to a survey posted on the USGS website, this earthquake was felt throughout the southeast and even as far away as Arnold Nebraska. That’s over 900 miles (1,448 kilometers) from the epicenter. We recorded the vibrations from this earthquake on 44 different seismographs that were set up with remote access to continuously monitor vibrations from blasting activities. Having this data gave us an opportunity to compare the vibrations caused by earthquakes and blasting. A simple observation of the amplitudes, frequencies, and durations is enough to notice that vibrations from earthquakes are very different than vibrations caused by blasting in mining and construction

The mineral Industry, following the economy as a whole, experienced little growth in 1992. However, with modernized plants, efficient workforces, and lower operating costs, the industry is well positioned to take advantage of possible improvement in the national economy during 1993. In addition to the significant 1992 events highlighted below, important events, trends, and issues within individual mineral industries are addressed in the commodity sections that follow. The value of processed materials of mineral origin is estimated to have been about $310 billion in 1992. The value of U.S. raw nonfuel minerals production in 1992 is estimated at approximately $32 billion, a 3% increase over 1991. The value of domestic minerals production has increased in all but 4 of the last 32 years.

This paper describes a physical modelling program that recreated block cave propagation in a geotechnical centrifuge. A brief description of the design of the test along with the sample material and monitoring equipment is given. The samples tested showed caving behaviour and fragmentation distributions that one would expect from caving mines, with one cave deviating due to pre-existing major discontinuities in the sample. A series of fractures formed ahead of and parallel to the cave, implying that an extensional failure mechanism may play a larger role in cave development than previously thought. The results of acoustic emission monitoring of the tests show a seismogenic zone advancing ahead of the cave; however, the quantity and quality of the data is too limited to draw any further conclusions.CITATION:Cumming-Potvin, D, Wesseloo, J, Jacobsz, S W and Kearsley, E, 2016. Being a geologist I intend describing the renaissance of the gold industry in Australia within its geologic framework; there is a geological pattern to the numerous gold projects which have been brought on stream over the past decade. We are now about midway through our third and largest gold boom which, at a peak of 7.5 million ounces is about twice the production peaks achieved in the preceding booms. From discovery in 1851 through 1870 we saw the first boom largely based on alluvial production in NSW and in Victoria at the great Ballarat and Bendigo Goldfields. The discovery of the Golden Mile in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, underpinned the second gold boom in the period 1895 - 1915. On that basis the present boom should last through the next decade.   It has been a golden decade for Australian gold production. From less than ten mines in 1980 with production over 10 000 ounces and the largest, Telfer, with output of about 130 000 ounces we now find over 130 deposits being worked around the country today that produce over 10 000 ounces with the largest, Boddington, having an output of over 400 000 ounces. In total these mines produced an estimated 210 tonnes of gold in 1989 and we expect this year, 1990, that a new record production of between 240 and 250 tonnes will be set. This positions Australia in third place in the Western World behind South Africa #1 and the USA #2 and fourth in the world with the Russians holding second place overall behind the South Africans.

The structural, textural and mineralogical properties of the slate formations of NW Spain make it the most important district in the world for quarrying roofing slates. Over the past 10 years the introduction of new methods has increased yields from 2 to 13%. The main factors affecting quality are quartz grain size less than 75 micrometres, homogeneity of slaty cleavage and S0-S1 intersection angle, very low metamorphic grade, absence of secondary foliation, beds 10-12 m thick and low content of oxidisable Fe sulphides. The two main controls on fissility are lithology and deformation accompanied by metamorphism. The minimum natural block size should be 0.6 m3 but this volume can be reduced for modern cutting tools such as diamond wire, chain and circular saws. Structural analysis is crucial in exploration and quarrying, as shown by the prospecting methodology applied at Dominio de Truchas in central Spain and the computer analysis of rock mass discontinuities at Casaio quarry

"Ore sorting has been quite successful in providing a separation means in the rock size range of 1 to 6 inches; a range where mineral dressers do not have many options. The industrial minerals and recycling worlds have embraced this technology. However, ore sorting has not found wide application in the base or precious metals mining industry. One reason for this is thought to be the reliance of most sensors on rock surface characteristics, not very useful in case of sulphides, non-existing in case of gold. Microwave heating, however, is specific for sulphides and graphite (or carbonaceous matter) embedded in the rocks; washing or even drying does not appear necessary. Separation can be done afterwards by already existing ore sorting technology using infrared sensors. Test results on six Nevada gold ore samples are presented in detail. Some simple test procedures are also presented for those wishing to explore the microwave potential of sulphide sorting in their own operations.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing in the base metals industry most often involves upgrading of the ore, concentrating the valuable mineral fraction by classic methods, such as flotation. Since the liberation of minerals in the ore occurs mostly at or below the 100 micron level, the industry has been living with fault lines, so to speak, between blast hole spacing (10,000 mm), run-of-mine ore size (100 mm) and beneficiation size (0.1 – 0.01 mm). The acceptance of ore sorting will inevitably lead to the revisiting of the following questions: “Exactly how much below ore grade rock ends up in the mill because the geologists or the miners cannot define the resource boundaries more precisely? How can the economics of dilution be improved? How many ore grade rocks are lost with the overburden?”"

Through the use of pressure and production records, formation properties and bottom-hole sample data, the performance of an oil reservoir may be studied analytically to define and evaluate the natural forces acting on and within the reservoir. Use is made of material-halance methods and the equations for natural water encroachment. to estimate reserves. Methods for calculation of pressures are given. A study of the Jones sand, Schuler field, Arkansas, has been made and is given here to illustrate the value of the methods discussed. Introduction With the decreasing rate of discovery of new oil reserves, attention is necessarily focused on the efficient development, evaluation, and production of existing reserves. From the nation's viewpoint, the necessity of conserving resources is obvious. From the operator's viewpoint, the problem is to lengthen the period of profitable operation, in an attempt to increase the return on his investment. To do this the operator must take advantage of the natural forces acting on and within the reservoir. Natural water encroachment, the nemesis of profitable operation in the past, can be and is being harnessed to produce a greater oil recovery during the stage of flowing production. Proper evaluation of water encroachment rates and a fuller under- standing of reservoir behavior dictate the appropriate production procedures. Complacency in hit and miss production is obsolete. Oil production must and will approach the efficiency of other businesses, such as manufacturing. A manufacturer will not place an article on the market until he has fully investigated the processes involved, additional investment in equipment, costs of production, and expected profits. These may be modified by actual experience at a later date, but at least he begins with an idea of expected return. It is just as logical that an oil operator should investigate these same factors during the development and the early period of production of an oil reserve. The complexity of the problems existing in oil reservoirs should not be underestimated. Conversely, they should not be regarded as insoluble. Many completely defy solution, but there are others that can be solved completely or attacked intelligently to yield approximate results. The petroleum engineer has many tools, both figuratively and literally, at his disposal. Physical data such as core analyses, electrical logs, bottom-hole sample analyses, and bottom-hole pressures are accumulated extensively. Advances in the analytics of fluid flow have kept pace with the advances in measurement of physical data. It is the purpose of this paper to show how some of these records may be analyzed to define certain phases of reservoir behavior.

A method is proposed for the continuous calulation of a rock mass in real time while tunnelling with a TBM. Rock properties are investigated through models of the fracture stress under the disc cutters, the quasi-shear stress between the disc cutters and the specific energy of cutting under the disc cutters. Comparison of theoretical and monitored data of cutting specific energy can be used to determine theoretically the prevailing shape and size of the bulk debris. The shape and size of the chips from a given rock vary with the boring parameters. Introducing shape and volume corrections into the models of the evaluated stresses suppresses the influence of the boring regime and allows the rock properties to become dominant

IN 1933, the monetary metals were produced in a ratio of 6.7 oz. of silver to 1 oz. of gold, the lowest relatively for silver since the period from 1851 to 1865. At the beginning of that period, the virgin placers of California -and Australia began producing almost simultaneously; in consequence, there was an abrupt fall in the high silver side of the ratio that had prevailed through the centuries after America was discovered. The output from the Comstock and other silver-bearing lodes, located a decade after this influx of new gold began, soon restored the production ratio to its former proportion, that is, a relatively large weight of silver compared to gold.

Geostatistical methods have become well established in the last two decades for the evaluation of ore reserves in base metal, industrial minerals, coal and gold deposits of the Witwatersrand type. However, there has been considerable debate about the applicability of geostatistical techniques when applied to vein-type gold deposits with hydro or epithermal mineralisation. The main problems stem from a lack of spatial continuity and the highly erratic sample values that characterise these deposits. This paper reviews some of the current geostatistical techniques that are applied to the evaluation of gold prospects.

"Asbestos" is a name applied to a group of naturally fibrous minerals. Because it has the fibrous characteristics of silk or cotton and at the same time will not burn and has other advantageous properties as well, asbestos has specialized uses for which no adequate substitutes are yet available. Asbestos furnishes a major raw material for a great variety of essential products, the manufacture of which constitutes a vast industry. Asbestos generally occurs in irregular veins scattered throughout rock masses. Most of the fiber-bearing rock is mined in huge open-pit or underground workings. The fibers are separated from the rock and sorted into groups, according to length, in large, complex mills. The longer fibers are stripped to textile plants, where they are further fiberized and prepared in special machines and are used for spinning into yarn and weaving into unburnable cloth that has many important uses. The shorter fibers, which are much more abundant than the long ones, are used in asbestos-cement building materials in heat-insulating products and for a multitude of other applications. These processes and uses are covered in considerable detail in later sections of this report.

The mining industry is the largest source of foreign income for South Africa. It is also the main source of employment in the country and, as an industry; it is also one of the largest. Due to the labour-intensive nature of the industry, labour costs in South African mines make up nearly 50 per cent of the total mine cost. It is thus imperative to have optimum labour planning and labour management systems in place.The focus of this study was to investigate current underground labour-planning models. It is shown that there are serious limitations. The range between an oversupply and undersupply of labour can be as high as ten per cent. A new system was therefore developed to ensure a constant labour demand and supply on a daily basis. One of the main objectives was to determine the existing labour supply range and thus the requirements to fill the undersupply. For this purpose, a specific methodology was designed to capture and process all the relevant information. Mine personnel was involved throughout the entire process to ensure ownership of the new model. This buy-in was achieved through planning workshops, interactive presentations and discussions. The improved frequency of daily blasts validated the new system by providing the correct amount and mix of the labour force. The new labour-planning model was then extended to optimise revenue. Implementation on a mine resulted in increased income of R95 million.

Subsurface injection of liquid and slurry-type industrial waste is being used as a means of waste disposal. This survey conducted by the Bureau of Mines shows that the method can be economically and environmentally attractive if the proper precautions are taken, especially when the alternative is cursory treatment and discharge at the surface. Attention is called to petroleum technology and experience that can be applied to subsurface waste injection. Part 1 of this report is a discussion of the general aspects of subsurface waste-injection systems. Part 2 is a general discussion and review of the literature concerning the geologic formations available for injection in the United States. Part 3 is a discussion if 15 case histories including information on the source and nature of the waste and the geology, surface equipment, well completion, and operation of the systems.

Twenty field-scale tests were conducted in a 28 MW pulverized coal power plant in Healy, Alaska, to examine mill power consumption in relation to coal grind size. The intent in this field-scale study was to verify if grind size truly impacted power consumption by a detectable amount. The regression model developed from the data indicates that grind size does impact mill power consumption, with finer grinds consuming significantly more power than coarser grinds. However, other factors such as coal hardness (i.e., the lower the Hardgrove Grindability Index, or the harder the coal, the higher the power consumption) and mill throughput (i.e., the higher the throughput, the higher the power consumption) had to be included before the impact of grind size could be isolated. It was also observed that combining amperage and flow rate into a single parameter, i.e., specific amperage, hurt modeling. Cost analysis based on the regression model indicate a power savings of $19,972 per year if the coal were ground to 50% passing 76 mm rather than the industry standard of 70% passing 76 mm. The study also demonstrated that size reduction constituted a significant portion of the power consumption.

This report is one of a series written by members of the Solid Fuels Mission to Germany describing wartime developments in the mining , preparation, and utilization of coal . The mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee , which cooperated with a counterpart British Committee . Engineers from other allied countries cooperated in some of the investigations . The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter , deputy solid fuels administrator . The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. Yancey , in charge , J. W. Buch , Thomas Fraser , L. L. Newman , and L. D. Schmidt , of the Bureau of Mines ; H. H. Lowry , Director of the Coal Research Laboratory , Carnegie Institute of Technology ; H. J. Rose , vice president and director of research , Bituminous Coal Research, Inc .; and F. H. Reed , chief chemist , Illinois Geological Survey . Over 50 reports were written by the members of the Solid Fuels Mission . These and microfilms of supporting data obtained in the course of the investigations are on file at the Bureau of Mines , Washington , D. C. where they are available for public examination . The Office of the Publication Board in the Department of Commerce is prepared to furnish photolith copies , photostats , or microfilm reproductions of all declassified reports . The approximately 2800 Ma old Ventersdorp Contact Reef is a unique Witwatersrand orebody, from which about 6% of the world?s gold production is derived. A major portion of this production is mined at depths exceeding 2500 m and deepest levels of mining are at about 3600 m. The orebody?s hangingwall consists of volcanic rocks. This differs from the older Witwatersrand orebodies, which have quartzitic hangingwalls. The thickness of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef is generally about 1.20 m, but is highly variable, at an average dip of about 18°. A pronounced unconformity beneath this orebody is also expressed by varying footwall rock type characteristics and frequent rolling of the reef plane. These rolls follow topographic variations of the palaeo-surface. More geological than rock mechanics studies were performed on the Ventersdorp Contact Reef prior to 1992. Recently, however, a multidisciplinary team comprising various rock engineering and geological disciplines has delineated geotechnical areas by a novel technique. Geotechnical areas are defined by distinct footwall/hangingwall rock assemblages. The presence of three footwall and two hangingwall rock types results in the definition of six geotechnical areas across a distance exceeding 60 km, including about 10 gold mines. Distinct rock mass behaviour has been documented in three of the six geotechnically defined areas. Different rock mass behaviour is expressed by features such as mining-induced fracturing, closure rates, fall of ground characteristics and seismic character. Some geological features override the rock mass behaviour as defined for the individual geotechnical areas. These are undulations of the orebody or the frequency, characteristics and attitude of major discontinuities. It is concluded that the concept of geotechnically subdividing orebodies is not only important for facies delineation and the associated grade, but also needs to be considered for safety aspects, in determining factors such as the appropriate support to be employed.

Rhyolitic rocks are volumetrically significant in the eastern part of the Coromandel gold province, yet deposits hosted by rhyolite (Kapowai, Broken Hills, Neavesville, Wharekirauponga and Waihi Beach) are generally low grade and subeconomic, especially compared with andesite-hosted deposits. In contrast, rhyolitic volcanic centres in Nevada host a number of economically significant epithermal gold deposits such as Round Mountain, Sleeper and Bullfrog. The Nevada deposits are associated with 27-20 Ma continental arc volcanics dominated by ignimbrites (eg Round Mountain), or younger 17-9 Ma bimodal rhyolite-basalt volcanism related to extensional basin-and-range tectonics (eg Sleeper). The Round Mountain deposit is localised on a caldera boundary fault and the mineralisation was deposited soon after eruption of the host rhyodacitic ignimbrite. In other Nevada deposits, hydrothermal systems are linked to the closing stages of flow-dome complexes and mineralisation is localised along normal faults associated with extensional basin-and-range tectonism. The style and composition of the mineralisation is similar in both the Coromandel and Nevada deposits and consists of sheeted and stockwork quartz veins, containing electrum as the main ore mineral and only minor sulphides (mainly pyrite) Likewise, the vein minerals were deposited from low salinity hydrothermal fluids in the temperature range of 200-270¦C. Both the Neavesville and Round Mountain deposits are geochemically anomalous in molybdenum. The deep oxidation of the Nevada gold deposits, dry climate and low level of competing land uses combine to make it economic to mine and process very low grade ore (0.2 - 2.0 g/t Au) by heap-leaching with cyanide solutions in most areas of Nevada. Although extensive low grade gold mineralisation is known at deposits such as Wharekirauponga and Neavesville, it is sub-economic because of shallow oxidation and land use conditions that are unfavourable for open pit mining and heap leaching.
