Creating technology, securing patent rights, and managing a patent portfolio are time-sensitive and dynamic activities. Agreements should be in place with technology partners (employees, contractors, joint venture partners), prior to embarking on research and development projects, so as to mitigate future disputes over patent rights. Technology partners should be educated on patent law basics so as to be mindful of patent bar triggering events. Accurate records must be maintained to capture information relevant for preparation and filing of patent application, including subject matter, names of inventors, and invention date. Developed inventions should be evaluated for whether to file for patent protection, delay patenting until technology is further developed, maintain trade secrecy, or effect deliberate public disclosure. Once decision is made to file for patent protection, time is of the essence, and application for patent protection should be filed as soon as possible, as many countries award patents on a "first-to file" basis. Decisions on where to file are made having regard to potential competitive advantages versus cost considerations, and can be delayed by taking advantage of priority rights recognized in patent legislation of most countries. Once patents are granted, competitors must be policed for potential patent infringement, and legal action may be necessary to prevent patent infringement.

The great potential of Brazil for the agricultural production makes our country a generator of agro industrial residues. In this context, the solid-state fermentation appears as a technology that shows alternative ways for those residues, adding values to these raw materials, through the production of substances of industrial interest, besides reducing the possible environmental problems. The main objective of this study was to apply the bovine fat residue associated to the garden grass for the fungal lipase production. Initially, 75 microbial cultures were isolated from garden grass samples after incubation of the mixture with bovine fat. From these cultures were selected the filamentous fungi, whose lipase production abilities were evaluated. The isolation and the selection were accomplished by using a differential culture medium containing Tween 80 as inducer substrate of lipase production. The colonies with lipolytic potential were detected by the presence of white precipitation haloes on the agar. With agro industrial residues the best lipase producer fungus was identified as Penicillium sp in 6 days of solid state fermentation. The crude enzyme obtained was tested in transesterification process for the biodiesel production.

In 1996, Metaleurop replaced its conventional sintering and blast furnace lead smelting activity in Nordenham, Germany by Sirosmelt/Ausmelt technology. Following some alterations to the process and the equipment, the bath smelting plant reached its design capacity for the treatment of lead concentrates, lead sulphate paste from spent batteries, secondaries and internal by-products. A reliable metallurgical process has been established, and thus higher process stability has been achieved, increasing simultaneously the refractory life. Nevertheless, improvements are needed to control the process with a better automation system and reliable expert-systems, because of the intensity of the smelting process. The introduction of the Sirosmelt process for the pyrometallurgical production of lead instead of the prior conventional process has also demonstrated the following advantages: reduced emissions of heavy metals and gaseous compounds, reduction of the specific energy consumption, minimization of residues and a reduction of staff and maintenance costs. The environmental performance of the plant meets the requirements of the German regulations.

In the blast furnace, the reduction of iron oxide and gasification of coke occur simultaneously. It is well accepted that the gasification reaction controls the simultaneous reaction. Therefore, it is important to develop highly reactive carbonaceous materials. It is also known that the reaction is accelerated catalytically with the addition of some materials. In the present work, the catalytic effect of iron, nickel and CaO on the gasification of graphite and coke was examined. The catalytic effect of iron, nickel and CaO on the reaction rate of graphite was noticed The effect was larger at lower temperature. At 1373 K, the effect almost vanished. The effect was larger in the order of CaO, iron and nickel. The reaction rate of de-ashed coke increased by the addition of iron and nickel. The effect of iron was larger than that of nickel. The effect was larger at higher temperature, which was contrary to the case of graphite. The reactive surface area increased also by the addition. Therefore, the catalytic effect on reaction rate might be attributable to the increase in the reactive surface area.

The opening years of the new millennium will be characterised by the closure of many lead and zinc mines because of reserve depletion. However, weak commodity prices through the second half of the 1990s have slowed project evaluation and have made it difficult to raise finances for the development of new mines required to replace lost output and to meet increasing demand for metal in the future. Growth of lead and zinc demand will be determined by the pace of global economic activity, especially in the emerging economies. How rapidly demand grows will have a key bearing on the possible shortfall in mine output and the response of prices to the implied tightening of metal supplies early in the new millennium. These issues are the focus of a discussion of the critical lead and zinc supply developments which will unfold post 2000, taking into account project lead times and the role that recycled metal plays in meeting market demand.

Mineral processing plants typically procure a range of industrial services from contractors. Their satisfaction and value received is directly affected by how the services are procured, rationalized and delivered. Conventional purchasing strategies often focus on price rather than on optimizing the service relationship between supplier and customer. The nature of this relationship may have the greatest potential to reduce costs and enhance production. It has been documented that a service involves simultaneous production and consumption. A high degree of customer involvement is often necessary for a successful outcome and the expectations and attitudes of the customer can positively or negatively affect delivery of the service. This indicates that the customer can enhance or diminish their own satisfaction and value received and the supplier cannot act alone for best results. The Optimax? Program for industrial services is a service delivery framework whereby a customer and supplier work together to raise the efficiency of the service exchange. The Optimax? Program is intended to help the customer optimize costs and maximize production by connecting the customer and supplier through shared information and objectives. This paper will review the basic nature of services, provide a couple of examples of conventional procurement strategies for services and outline the features of the Optimax? Program. A Case Study showing recent results from implementing the Optimax? Program will be included.

The enlarged Mitsubishi process in Naoshima has been in steady operation since. May 1991. However, the sulfuric acid plants have been in operation for more than 30 years. The acid plants were modernized between 1999 and 2001 by renewing some of main equipment such as the drying tower and gas heat exchangers, and introducing new technology. At the same time, as an electric energy saving measure, the electric power consumption in the sulfuric acid plant was vastly improved by decreasing the volume of gas treated the installation of low temperature activity catalyst in the 1st pass of the converter and optimization of main gas blower runner. Furthermore, last year, the oxygen plant was replaced and enlarged, and anode production increased from 240,000 to 280,000 tonnes per year with an associated increase of sulfuric acid from 550,000 to 660,000 tonnes per year. This paper describes these recent improvements in the acid plant at Naoshima smelter.

During the casting of lead-silver anodes, variations in cooling rates result in the formation of an uneven microstructure. The slowly cooled areas (SCA) have a coarser microstructure than that of the remaining part (called "the general zone"). The effect of anode microstructure on the electrochemical behavior was investigated using galvanostatic, potentiodynamic and electrochemical impedance techniques. The results show that the resistances for the two steps of the oxygen evolution reaction on the slowly cooled areas of Pb- Ag anodes are higher than that on the general zone. The double layer capacitance for the first step of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the pseudocapacitance of the second step of OER on SCA are smaller than those on the general zone. The potentiodynamic results show that the amount of lead dioxide formed on the SCA is greater than that of the general zone of the anode. The potential decay curves after 30 minutes of galvanostatic polarization at 45 mA/cm2 show that the corrosion potential of the SCA is 200 mV lower than that of the general zone. This can lead to perforation because of the formation of a galvanic cell with a small anode and a large cathode.

Thiocyanate was evaluated for gold recovery from low-grade refractory gold ores following biooxidation for an acidic heap leaching approach. One of the important features in using thiocyanate is that the leaching can be performed in acidic media, thus avoiding problems related to neutralization and material handling as leaching with alkaline cyanide. Also, the acidic leaching enables the use of ferric ion or bioleach solution as oxidants. In this study, Newmont-Nevada low-grade refractory sulfidic ore was biooxidized in columns at a particle size of 100% passing 102 mm. Thiocyanate leach on the biooxidized ore sample was performed on both ground samples in pulps and coarse material in columns using ferric ion as an oxidant. The variables of thiocyanate and ferric ion concentrations were compared for effect on leaching. Thiocyanate leach results are encouraging and indicate potential for development of a practical process. Gold extractions by thiocyanate are comparable to cyanide leach. Thiocyanate consumption was higher than cyanide, but was in an acceptable level.

Nowadays, hard carbides have found various industrial application in the manufacture of cutting and drilling tools as well as metal forming devices. About 60% of the world tungsten production is consumed in the manufacture of hard carbide pieces. Regarding the high economic value of hard carbide components, i.e., Ni, Co, TaC, TiC, and WC, their recovery from scrap species is attracting much interest. In the current research, the cobalt and tungsten content were recovered from scrap cemented carbide pieces through the application of high voltage electrolysis in nitric acid media. By this method, cobalt and tungsten were initially recovered as cobalt nitrate and tungstic acid, respectively. The precipitate of tungstic acid was calcined at 800ºC after being washed twice with distilled water. A pure tungstic oxide was obtained. The effects of current density, electrolyte concentration, speed of agitation, and the surface area of the anode on the efficiency of the electrolysis process were investigated. The optimum conditions of current density of 1500 A/m2, an acid concentration of 1.5 M, and a cell temperature in the vicinity of 60 to 80ºC were obtained. At the optimum conditions, an acceptable rate of collapse for the anodic carbide pieces of about 3.1 g/h was achieved, which remained constant up to the completion of the recovery process without any passivation .

A new technology, known as the HydroZinc? process, is described for the recovery of zinc from sulphide ores that includes heap leaching, neutralization, solvent extraction and electrowinning. Unit operations were scaled up from bench-scale to a 1-t/d zinc cathode demonstration plant. Bench-scale studies defined the process chemistry and a process flowsheet. Column tests were used to design full-scale heaps for zinc bioleaching, and mini-pilot equipment was used to design a solvent extraction circuit. The characteristics of the process required development of a bleed circuit for water and impurities. The complete integrated process was tested on a demonstration plant scale for two years, with about 10 000 t of zinc sulphide ore being bioleached in two 6-m-tall test heaps. In addition to 1 t/d of zinc cathode, iron hydroxide and gypsum residues were produced. The process also generated a small effluent bleed. Over the course of the two-year demonstration test, a number of technical hurdles were overcome and several improvements were made. Some of the more significant ones are presented along with process descriptions and experimental and demonstration plant data. Some engineering aspects and economic evaluations of the new process are also discussed.

The Demag Electric Slag Cleaning Furnace installed at the Asarco Smelter in Hayden Arizona is one of the few rectangular electric furnaces now operating. The long transition times from charge to tap allow exceptionally clean skims (high recovery); however, the furnace design is complex. Additional Asarco requirements for rapid installation and commissioning further complicated the design. When operating and wear effects accumulated after two years of use, steps were taken to rebuild the furnace with enhanced durability based on the design parameters experience in actual use.

"India’s present annual marine fish catch is 2.9 million tonnes and its low value fishes such as sardines, sciaenids, goat fishes and leiognathids amount to 60%. The fish meal obtained from these resources is mainly used presently as an ingredient in live stock and aquaculture feeds. These fishes offer vast scope in the production of pet foods. Pet foods prepared with leiognathid fish meal (60%), maize flour (10%), wheat flour (5%), vitamin and mineral mixture (5%) and water (20%) and experimented with 50 cats and 50 dogs were found to be ideal. Depending on protein level, feeds are being formulated for experimenting with more number of pet animals. As a fundamental study for smelting the copper matte with high contents of arsenic and antimony in a strongly reducing condition, phase relations between the liquid matte and copper-rich alloy phases in the Cu-Fe-S-As or -Sb quaternary system and between the liquid matte and iron-rich alloy phases in the Cu-Fe-S-As or -Sb system saturated with carbon were determined at 1473 K by a quenching method. Activities of arsenic and antimony in these systems were also measured at 1473K by Knudsen cell-mass spectrometry. Furthermore, distribution ratios of silver, gold and platinum between the liquid matte and copper-rich or iron-rich alloy phases were determined in relation to the arsenic or antimony content in the systems. On the basis of these data, the elimination of arsenic and antimony from the matte to the iron-rich alloy (speiss) and the recovery of precious metals in reduction smelting of the copper matte were evaluated. It was suggested that the addition of pig iron to make a strongly reducing condition and form the iron-rich alloy, which is fluid at smelting temperatures, will be useful for fixing arsenic in the speiss.

The pre-reduction behaviour of chromite particles in methane-argon and methane-hydrogen gas mixtures was investigated between 1050°C and 1250°C. Loose bed of chromite particles were reacted in a vertical tube furnace under a pre-set gas mixture predetermined time intervals. Metallization results were obtained for the Cr and Fe components by chemically analyzing the reaction products. SEM-EDAX techniques and X-ray diffraction were employed to elucidate the reduction mechanism. It was found that higher reduction kinetics and higher Cr:Fe ratios in the metal phase would be achieved when hydrocarbon gas was used in comparison to classical carbothermic reduction at a given temperature. The reduction rate was generally bulk gas mass transfer controlled to the reaction site for initial stages which then was followed by ionic diffusion rate control. It is proposed that methane did not partake directly in the reduction but cracked, presenting the reaction site with hydrogen gas and atomic carbon, which was able to immediately react at the immediate area of reduction regeneration CO and H2 and thus maintaining a low partial pressure of oxygen at the reaction site.

The system of short term forecast of metal prices at LME is based on correlation between prices within the quarter forward and at the first place by economic parameters at the West, determining the consumption of metals. Such economic parameters are presented by data of indexes of Western World industrial production (WW IP), official data of IP and Dow Jones indexes at USA. For price forecast within the quarter forward (one day ahead, 3 day -65 days MA forward prices) are significant the changes of actual prices (official and close) at the past and the parameters of daily trade at LME at the past (futures turnover, open interest, LME stocks). It is developed subsystem of price forecast within the quarter forward based on analytical approach determining the relations between the participants of the market. It gives the opportunity to reduce the number of empirical coefficients at the model and receive good accuracy of forecast the MA prices and its direction at the future. Very important part of short term forecast is subsystem determining analytically the probability that the price forecasted for the next trading day will be the maximum or minimum daily price within the quarter forward. The thresholds probabilities are defined by identification the model at the past by maximal commercial efficiency. Such system was tested at the past at period since 2000 till 2005 and gives very high commercial results at operations on 1M forwards and hedging the sales of nonferrous metals traded at LME (primary aluminium, light alloys, nickel, copper, zinc, lead and tin).

Boron minerals are widely employed in various fields such as ceramic, glass, cement, metallurgy, etc. Although boron deposits of the world are limited, the production level of boron-based products is continuously increased. Turkiye possesses approximately 73 % of total world boron resources. Etibor Kirka Borax Company of Turkiye produces tincal concentrates and borax pentahydrates. During such productions considerable amounts of concentration and derivation wastes appear. Having considered the increased rate of production it is quite obvious that the level of relevant wastes will also be raised. With this study it was aimed to utilize these wastes in roof tile and brick bodies and to convert them into a form environmentally and human friendly. Newly produced products were undergone to several standard tests for the determination of their shrinkage, water absorption, strength values and coloring parameters. Additionally, micro structural studies were conducted.

There are many experimental works on the investigation of temperature effect on the conductivity of polymers filled by carbon materials. However frequently the establishment of current nature in the polymer heterogeneous systems becomes difficult. This fact is explained by complexity of calculation of different physical or chemical phenomena passing in materials at variation of the temperature. Among these phenomena it must be noted some morphological changes in the structure of polymers. These changes reflex on the structure of conductive system of composites. So, it has been shown, that the character of temperature dependence of thermal noises level and conductivity of some polymers filled by carbon black essentially depend on some relaxation transition in the polymeric matrix. In this paper the effect of difference transitions in polymer matrix of filled by carbon black some polymers and rubbers have been investigated in a wide temperature range. The importance of such investigation is due to possibility of application of resistive temperature sensors based on conductive polymeric composites (CPC) to measuring technology. The experiments have been carried out in the cavity with regulation of temperature in the range 110-650K. The resistance of samples was measured by four electrodes method. The samples were obtained by hot pressing of dry mixture of powdered components at chosen temperatures, pressures and cooling time in the case of plastics and by peroxide vulcanization of the elastomers in the case of the rubbers. The samples were produced on the basis of the following thermoplastics: low density polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polycarbonate and polydimethylmethylvinilsiloxane.

"According to characteristics of Tm, Yb and Lu enriched oxides composition and problems in its traditional extraction separation process, the computer simulation of a optimized fuzzy extraction separation process, in which three products with high purity(>99.99%) could be obtained at same time, was carried out. Distributing Curves of every element in both organic and aqueous phases were worked out. Distribution rules of rare earth elements in every stage of the optimized extraction process were studied. The computation results of economical and technical index showed the consumption of the acid and base chemical reagents in the optimized process would be saved more than 30%.IntroductionFor the solvent extraction separation process of rare earths, countercurrent extraction process was widespread in the industrial practice. Normally, rare earth ions were extracted by the saponificated extractant and transferred into the organic phase, where the acidic extractant was saponificated by the base firstly. Then, the loaded rare earth ions were stripped from the organic phase into the aqueous phase by the acid. Therefore, the acid and the base were the main consumptions in the process, and the equilibrium acid of the stripped rare earth solution was one of the main pollution resources. Meanwhile, for the heavy rare earths, such as Tm, Yb and Lu, stripping was more difficult, and the equilibrium acidity of the stripped rare earth solution was higher, so the acid consumption increased greatly."

A thermodynamic model for predicting the distribution coefficients has been developed by taking into account the extraction mech-.ism and the chloride complexation when Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy and Ho for single component systems are extracted from acidic chloride solutions by di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid and 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester in kerosene, respectively. The model equation includes two constants, of which one corresponds to the apparent extraction equilibrium constant and the other is due to the variation of the activity coefficients of organic species. These values are determined from a few experimental data by the curve fitting method Then, the distribution coefficients under untried conditions have been predicted from only the initial data by iterative calculations. Bromley's formulation is used to estimate the activity coefficients of aqueous species and the interaction parameters for some rare earth chlorides are reported in terms of molality and molarity using data from Spedding et al. The validity of this method has been confirmed by excellent agreement between the experimental and the predicted distribution coefficients.
